GENEVA — Sensory deprivation might not sound like a wellness concept at first, but a growing body of evidence suggests that an hour in a darkened flotation tank might help reduce anxiety levels and allow individuals to recalibrate and enhance their senses. In Floating Realities, Swiss-Portuguese office BUREAU takes visitors on a journey from the street to the pod, stripping away the everyday and taking the spa’s clients on an ‘intimate, timidly erotic and calm trip’. The entrance is designed as a dreamy, street-side cafe, meticulously decked out in pastel tiles. Reclaimed park benches painted in matching colours and a dark rock emerging from the ceiling add a surrealist touch as visitors prepare to parse their unconscious mind. Large indoor plants are scattered throughout the space to evoke an informal – almost unguarded – atmosphere. From there, clients venture into a tiled relaxation room where they can strip down and recline on custom-made loungers divided by curtains. The curtain rails, shelves and lockers are guided by the precise tile grid and once again painted in matching, soft pastel colours. From this transition zone, they then enter individual womb-like floatation cells. With only soft ambient lighting, the journey is now complete. With its subtle dreamlike quality and masterful sequences of colour and space, Floating Realities facilitates a private journey into the self.
