Unlike other elite clubs in China, however, Fortune Character would operate across multiple locations and include secondand third-tier cities (where more than 50% 0f the country’s wealth is located) along with the usual first-tier ones. Today Fortune Character has offices in 13 mainland Chinese cities and reaches more than 182,000 consumers in 33 divisions, making it the biggest organisation of its kind in China. Membership is by invitation only and subject to strict wealth requirements. There are two levels of membership: VVIP for those worth more than $15 million and VIP for those worth $1-$15 million.There are currently more than 60,000 VVIP members. The membership is well-engaged and enthusiastic, as demonstrated by event-attendance: every year Fortune Character organises more than 100 events – everything from car launches to high-level business summits and fine wine tastings – varying in scale from intimate dinners for 10 to presentations to 500 or more members. Fortune Character’s reach in to the more ‘remote’ cities means it is frequently the sole conduit through which the wealthy have opportunities to access some of the trappings of success, making it hugely valuable to members and brands alike.
