I know it is a cliché to say that the year passed by in a blink, but I guess that's the best way to explain the feeling – this is the last issue of 2023. Next time we meet here again, we will be talking about a brand new year full of hope and possibilities. As every new year allows us, for 2024, I wish a win for humanity and less anger. What's your wish? Winter is finally here, and we can embrace the wardrobe staples the season brings – we are more than ready! Come as you are – not so cold but with a comforting cool breeze. I love winters in the Middle East. Our Ohlala Spa & Wellness Awards Qatar 2023 has ended, and we look forward to celebrating all the winners. Still in the beauty theme, we had two pampering sessions this month: a comprehensive facial at Raffles Doha and a Hammam at Rixos Gulf Hotel Doha. It's your last chance to end 2023 on a relaxing note. We travelled to Istanbul on the comforting and luxurious Business Class of Turkish Airlines – a great way to fly to such a magical place. We had a memorable stay at the five-star Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul and explored this city's unique landmarks. The dining scene in Doha never fails to impress us; this time, we had an Asian-Pacific experience at KAIA, located at The Ned Doha. Our motoring test drive was behind the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid wheel – the perfect encounter between a classic automobile and modernity. You say goodbye, and I say hello! Happy New Year!

HUGO have announced an exciting collaboration with Warner Bros. The new HUGO x Gremlins collection is here for the festivities. The original film gained worldwide popularity in the 80s with the cute protagonist, Gizmo, and is considered an iconic holiday movie – making the full selection a perfect gifting idea for the winter season. The capsule is composed of two sleek T-shirts, a pullover hoodie and a baseball cap – all of which are crafted in black and feature prints of the film’s unmistakable creatures. The jewellery brand Tiffany & Co. announced their latest collaboration with contemporary artist Daniel Arsham in partnership with the entertainment franchise Pokémon. The Tiffany & Arsham Studio & Pokémon capsule was designed with Arsham’s ‘future relics’ aesthetic, where he reimagines everyday objects as archaeological discoveries from an imagined future. The designs bring a recontextualised Pokémon, a nod to the artist’s A Ripple in Time project in Tokyo. It features nine jewellery designs, from pendants to necklaces, highlighting six iconic Pokémon characters: Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, Cubone and Mew. Playing on Pikachu’s iconic yellow colour, two different iterations of necklaces, small and large pendant sizes, are available in 18-carat yellow gold with diamond accents. The elegant Love in Verona collection is part of an ongoing thread that connects Roberto Coin’s jewellery to Italy’s most iconic cities. The various pieces display a minimal and contemporary look yet hold a soul as ancient as eternal love. Verona has long been regarded as the city of lovers, especially as it set the stage for one of literature’s most famous love stories, Romeo and Juliet. It is also home to the Juliet Club, which has existed since 1930. It manages the thousands of love letters to Juliet that arrive from every corner of the world. Every day, a group of women gather to read and answer the love letters and then conserve them in a precious archive, all in the name of love and the city of Verona. The jewels in the collection are made with three colours of gold, in polished and satin finishes, to wear together. The design reintroduces the four-petal diamond flower that has been the centre of other lines. The use of make-up products is on the rise, but based on findings from the 2022 Makeup Attitudes and Usage Report from the NPD (a data and analytics company), mascara is the most popular product overall. It darkens lashes and adds length and volume for brighter and biggerlooking eyes. Benefit have an array of items in their portfolio and Fan Fest mascara has just joined the big family. It promises to deliver an instant eye-opening effect. It has a custom-engineered brush with a 40-degree angle that lifts lashes from root to tip and corner to corner. The fanning formula is composed of provitamin B5, which helps condition the lashes, cranberry extract with beneficial fatty acids for a nourishing feeling and rice wax that helps define and separate lashes for a lasting lifting result. Other qualities are: 24-hour full fan effect, smudge-proof, water-resistant, humidity-proof, sweatproof and no clumping or flaking. OUR VERDICT: This is what our Editor-in-Chief, Fernanda Langhammer, has to say: “I wear very minimal make-up in my day-to-day beauty routine, but mascara is essential! I rarely leave the house without it, so I was excited to try Benefit’s Fan Fest. I have to say that the first thing I loved about this mascara was its applicator. The curved shape is perfect for grabbing all the lashes simultaneously, which, in my case, revealed a stunning eye-opening effect. There was no clumping after applying and, even after wearing it for a whole day, there was no smudge, and it was still super easy to remove. In my opinion, the product could adhere more to the brush for a very black first application. However, it is not a bad thing if you want a toned-down look for your daily make-up as you can easily increase the darkness by applying more layers. Overall, I am very pleased with the results – it’s super comfortable to wear with a long-lasting effect; what else could a girl want from a mascara? SOLUTION OHLALA chatted with Wadha Al-Hajri, founder and CEO of KOY’ Cosmetics and tried this new skincare brand – a Qatari venture offering high-quality products.

T

he beauty sector grows more and more each year, and to follow the ascendant wave, new brands hit the market while well-known ones make sure to keep up with new products and formulas. The scenario is changing a bit; nowadays, local brands are standing out in the vast pool of options. We were recently introduced to KOY’ Cosmetics, skincare from Qatar manufactured in South Korea. We tried their products and had the chance to speak to the brand’s founder. Here is what we discovered: OHLALA – What made you create KOY’ Cosmetics? What motivated you? Wadha Al-Hajri – I have always had a deep passion for skincare. This interest was intensified by personal experience, as I have suffered from eczema. I constantly relied on medical solutions that solely targeted its symptoms, leaving me wanting a skincare line that could address multiple concerns. I realised that I needed a comprehensive solution that not only targeted fine lines but also protected the skin barrier, improved elasticity, calmed irritation and redness, and provided long-lasting hydration without clogging the pores. Additionally, I wanted the products to be loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients to promote 52

overall skin health. I knew that the skincare line had to align with my values of being vegan and clean. I wanted to simplify the skincare routine, making it practical for both men and women to use day and night. OHLALA – KOY’ is a brand with roots in Qatar but manufactured in South Korea. Why have you chosen South Korea? Wadha – Initially, we had considered manufacturing our products in Qatar. However, after careful evaluation and consideration, we chose South Korea as our manufacturing hub. This decision was driven by several factors. Firstly, producing in Qatar proved to be significantly more expensive than in South Korea. As a new and growing brand, we needed to be mindful of costs and ensure we could offer our customers high-quality products. Secondly, finding experienced staff in the skincare manufacturing industry in Qatar was a challenge. The level of expertise and knowledge required for formulating and producing these products was not easily accessible here. This would have hindered our ability to create innovative and effective products. This decision allowed us to focus on formulating and perfecting our products, ensuring we can deliver our customers the best possible skincare solutions.


OHLALA – With so many brands in the market, what do you think is your differential? Wadha – KOY’ Cosmetics provides a simplified skincare line that targets a variety of issues with one product. Our customers no longer have to purchase an array of items to achieve their desired results, as each product we offer effectively targets multiple concerns. At the heart of our line is a commitment to using quality ingredients that really work. In addition to our emphasis on effective ingredients, we also take quality very seriously. We work with reputable manufacturers in South Korea who are known for their expertise and their strict adherence to quality control measures. Our commitment to simplified, effective skincare, paired with excellent ingredients and rigorous manufacturing standards, sets us apart from other brands in the market. OHLALA – Can you tell us about the products available and what’s in their formula that makes them so unique? Wadha – Our Back To Basic skincare line offers three products that fulfil specific skin needs. All our products contain a unique seven-hyaluronicacid complex plus other ingredients. We offer a face mist that hydrates and rejuvenates the skin and contains Centella Asiatica extract and peptides. The face serum is composed of adenosine, peptides, betaine, octagonal fennel extract, aloe extract and vitamin B5. This formulation helps to lock in moisture, boost collagen production, improve skin elasticity and soothe irritated skin, leaving it well-nourished and hydrated. And, last but not least, a face moisturiser suitable for day and night use. It contains a combination of peptides and hyaluronic acid, designed to hydrate and nourish the skin. Including acetyl hexapeptide-8, dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate and copper tripeptide-1, it helps boost collagen production, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin elasticity. OHLALA – The Middle East has particular weather conditions. Did you consider this while creating the products? Wadha – The Middle East is known for its hot temperatures, high humidity and dry air, which can pose specific challenges for the skin. To address these concerns, our products are formulated with components suitable for these weather conditions. They include ingredients such as adenosine, raspberry ketone and aloe barbadensis leaf extract. Adenosine helps to improve skin elasticity and reduce signs of ageing, while raspberry ketone provides antioxidant protection against environmental damage. Aloe barbadensis leaf extract offers soothing and hydrating properties, which can alleviate dryness and irritation caused by the climate. Additionally, our products are designed to be lightweight and easily absorbed, ensuring they do not leave a greasy residue on the skin. This is particularly important in hot and humid climates found not only in the Middle East but also in various parts of the world. OUR VERDICT: It’s always exciting to try new items and KOY’ Cosmetics really delivers lightweight products packed with goodness. They are comfortable to wear, and even the moisturiser, which has a thick consistency, melts into the skin and is absorbed fast, leaving the complexion soft and hydrated. Most natural products are perfume-free and sometimes end up smelling not so great; the subtle scent they decided to use in KOY’s line is soothing, leaving a pleasant, elusive smell that we all adored. We also loved the fact that the products can be purchased online and are distributed worldwide.

Hidden from sight on the ground floor of the main lobby, a contemporary and sophisticated space envelops guests with quiet luxury. From the moment I stepped in, I immediately felt at ease. Shelves of products from their highly respected spa partners, Dr Burgener Switzerland, Subtle Energies and marocMaroc, filled the boutique entrance as a testament to the establishment’s pursuit of quality. The elegant space has white as the predominant colour with glimmers of gold, creating a serene ambience. Walkways are lined with miniature streams that lead through a maze of countless doors and rooms, hinting at the decadence I was to experience – the Raffles Spa promise of ‘Escape. Indulge. Transform.’ was already underway. Each treatment is offered in a standalone suite, a private area that includes everything you need from a wellness retreat. As a spa concept, this is unique in Qatar and mirrors the iconic suite concept Raffles Doha is known for. After being given a sneak peek of the soon-to-be-launched group retreat rooms, which I have to note are unbelievable in both size and quality, I was shown to the suite where my treatment took place. On entering, I felt as though I was stepping into a haven of pure luxury. Raffles knows you won’t want to leave this pocket of calm, so each suite has its own welcoming lounge, a perfect place to perch while checking in with your consultant, and a place to indulge in energising refreshments.

Moving further into the space, the fitness area welcomed me with its sleek, state-of-the-art equipment, set against mirrored walls that added a touch of modern elegance. Visitors are invited to make use of the full facilities in their suite before or after their treatment and I was not about to turn down a chance to relax prior to mine! I ventured further into the suite to find a cedar-lined sauna, which cocooned me in dry warmth. Following this, the marble steam room embraced me with a rejuvenating mist. The Jacuzzi took centre stage, a bubbling oasis of relaxation bathed in a soft, ambient glow. Before I knew it, I’d spent around an hour just exploring. The spa offers an extensive menu of services. Following an in-depth consultation with the therapist, I opted for the Dr Burgener Switzerland Customised Facial, a signature treatment here. Every therapy is deeply personalised based on your needs and issues, so do not expect the standard treatments offered elsewhere. My therapist, Sonia, was well-versed in the qualities of the Swiss brand and the product range. She explained that before the facial treatment commenced, she would be conducting some skin tests to ensure the processes selected were well-matched to the needs of my skin. She measured the moisture, pigmentation and oil levels, and the results allowed her to tailor the facial to me uniquely. With a plan in place, my treatment began. We went for the Lifting and Firming Collagen Facial, which guarantees results after just one treatment.

A mix of eucalyptus and lavender balm signalled the start of my facial, where Sonia guided me through some breathing techniques to reap the benefits of the scent and ensure I was fully relaxed. She then began with a thorough cleanse. The Cleansing Milk had an emulsifying action and felt as smooth as silk as it caressed into my face. Paired with the Floral Toner, which was packed with plant extracts to calm and refresh my skin, this cleansing duo set the tone for an opulent treatment. A slight tingling sensation from the toner told me these products were already working their magic! At any stage of the treatment, when a product needed to be removed, a microfibre mitten, moistened and heated, was used. This is a bespoke element of the Dr Burgener Switzerland product range, and I relished the sensation each time. Following this initial cleanse, Sonia began with the professional aesthetic system, designed to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and stimulate new cell growth. She explained that it was a non-invasive skin rejuvenating technique to improve the texture and appearance. I felt only a tingling waving across my skin as the probe vibrated at a very high frequency. Before each glide across my face, I was dabbed with an arnica-based oil intended to stop any inflammation and negate any reddening. As this element of the facial focused on removing dead cells, I was told that my face may feel a little rougher in the next couple of days before revealing


replenished new and vibrant skin underneath. To cool my complexion, the next step included an ultra-sound tool gently massaging my cheeks to boost natural collagen and elastin production. The final stage of my 90-minute facial was the highly anticipated collagen lifting and boosting firming mask. Sonia rolled a sheet mask onto my face, the active ingredients of which included a marine filler as well as hyaluronic acid. When I was told its effects could be seen as soon as five to 15 minutes after the treatment, I could not wait to examine my skin! While my complexion was absorbing (or drinking in) the collagen mask, I was treated to a wonderful hand and arm massage. After one last cleanse, the final step was the application of the HA-Xpress Face Serum, designed to hydrate my skin and leave me feeling dewy and rejuvenated. The serum smelt delightful, botanic and fresh. At the very end of my treatment, I looked in the mirror and was already thrilled at the result! Sonia took the time to reassure me these benefits would continue to develop as she headed off to prepare my tea. What I wasn’t expecting here was a full afternoon tea, set in the privacy and comfort of my own suite. I was in Raffles so, of course, their Raffles Afternoon Tea was utterly glamorous, set upon a stand that replicates the iconic shape of the building. What a way to finish! I had expected Raffles Spa Doha to be luxurious, of course, but I had not anticipated the attention to detail to ensure the entire experience was private, bespoke and sumptuous. My first step began with Luna, one of my therapists for the day, who introduced me to the Anjana Signature Hammam – a 90-minute authentic experience with all products sourced directly from Morocco. In the soothing warmth of the Hammam, I reclined on a heated marble slab. Luna began with a gentle cascade of warm water, followed by a frothy lather of black Moroccan soap and a henna scrub to soften the skin. Her skilled hands worked the soap into my skin using a Kessa mitt (special gloves used to exfoliate the skin), a traditional Moroccan ritual she’d practised all her life. The air was rich with earthy aromas as Luna’s rhythmic exfoliation left my skin feeling silky. A luxurious layer of Ghassoul clay, infused with ‘blossom water’, enveloped my body next. Its hardening was accompanied by the uplifting scent of orange. Luna then massaged me with milk soap to exfoliate the dead skin before turning to my hair, which she shampooed and conditioned with traditional products. The experience culminated with a refreshing splash of water, leaving my skin tingling and rejuvenated.

Spotlight Tailored Relaxation Following this immersive experience, Julia (the masseuse) ushered me into a serene private suite for the Anjana Signature Massage. The session started with Julia offering me a choice of oil for the massage. Her skilled hands then applied a unique blend of palm and thumb pressure, focusing on my postural muscles. The massage, ideal for those with an active lifestyle or engaged in office work, targeted knots along my neck and shoulders. Julia’s firm yet gentle touch combined rhythmic strokes and thumb presses to stimulate energy flow and release tension. The air was scented with warm basil and ginger oil, enhanced by the uplifting aromas of lemongrass and bergamot. Julia’s technique included stretching and compression, enhancing my flexibility and relaxation. As time seemed to pause, I loosened completely into the massage table, enveloped in waves of calm well-being. Emerging from the massage, I felt a profound sense of bliss, as if a burden had been lifted, my mind and body embracing tranquillity.

Known for their evocative creations, ROKSANDA bring an autumn and winter 2023 collection true to their core – full of intense colours and creative expression. The ROKSANDA Autumn and Winter 2023 collection is a tribute to art, design and community. One of the brand’s inspirations is the work of Japanese visual artist Atsuko Tanaka, an important member of the post-war artistic movement Gutai (an art expression where the human spirit and matter shake hands while keeping their distance). ROKSANDA introduce a scenario where the coexistence of fragility and strength is mirrored in the collection’s optimistic effervescence, dramatic radiance and elegant sheerness. Channelling the brand’s rich artistic nature, abstract expressionism is interpreted in luxurious silks that become canvases to showcase print techniques, creating illusions of layered silhouettes and allowing multiple areas of colour for a distinct effect. The creations are further extended to develop a fil-coupé fabric (a jacquard weaving method), woven onto a delicate silk organza base, from which gravity seems to be melting elements of the gown. Elsewhere, recycled crushed taffeta in foiled gold and silver is applied to innovative architectural constructions, allowing unexpected negative spaces. The theme of sheltering and a sense of refuge is emphasised through delicate silks overlaid by floor-sweeping woollen capes. Tailoring and outerwear remain powerful while new structures are introduced through increasingly defined waistlines. Exaggerated proportions and extended panels of fabric wrapped around the bodice form new-found silhouettes. Handmade bright crimson and yellow patterns are applied by needle punching – using the artisanal technique Agugliatura to form organic, abstract lines, elevating fine wool coats and over layers. Soft Nappa leather accessories in the brand’s unmistakable vivid colours, such as fluorescent pink and marine blue, are repurposed and reconstructed with foam elements featured at necklines and as straps, creating a modern, distinctive synergy with classic footwear by Manolo Blahnik.

T

he fashion scene in Qatar is setting the stage for the field in the region. MATCHES (an online luxury destination for men and women delivering to over 170 countries) brought their concept to Doha to showcase their apparel and accessories curation. It was a weeklong pop-up experience at M7, the design and innovation hub in the heart of Msheireb Downtown Doha. The activation was intended as part of Fashion Trust Arabia (FTA) 2023 that was postponed this year. The setup included curated selections from established brands, such as ROKSANDA, Erdem, Taller Marmo and Rohe, new designer showcases, and exclusive items from the latest autumn and winter 2023 collections. Visits to the pop-up happened through private tours and attentive input from the MATCHES team. The company also hosted a series of private events and personal shopping consultations. In this scenario, OHLALA had the opportunity to chat to Liane Wiggins, Head of Womenswear at MATCHES. She talks about the partnership with Qatar Creates – the year-round cultural movement and platform for arts and culture in Qatar – and working in this interesting industry. OHLALA – How did you enter the fashion world, and what do you like most about your profession? Liane Wiggins – Growing up, my dad worked in both luxury and high-street retail and my mum ran her own textile design business. The combination of the two influenced me greatly and ultimately led me to work in this field. Early in my design degree, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in buying; I had always loved the industry and was (and still am) fascinated by what drives customers, particularly women, and how this evolves over different life stages. I started at MATCHES as an intern and have worked in various departments across the business over the years before becoming Head of Womenswear (Ready To Wear). When I first joined, I worked directly with the founders, Tom and Ruth Chapman. A few years after, the online business was launched. It was a new and exciting time for luxury retail and MATCHES. OHLALA – What key points would you highlight in your role? Any tips? Liane – At this point in my career, I still love discovering new brands and great products. I love working with such a wide variety of aesthetics and having the opportunity to advise brands on how to build their businesses and develop products in the right way for retail. I am lucky to work with such an amazing team; in my role, I work with all levels of the business to develop the best buying strategy and how to translate this across all the different touchpoints. The most important qualities in a great buyer are an extraordinary love for the product and a passion for sourcing – being aware of new emerging fashion trends and external factors that can impact how people shop. Being commercially minded and always thinking about the entire journey for the customer and being a fast decision maker, a great communicator and a negotiator. Developing and nurturing all types of relationships is crucial, from suppliers to designers and your team. OHLALA – What, in your opinion, gives a brand the potential to succeed in the global market? Liane – Everything starts with the product, and strong product development is key to building a successful global brand. It is important to really understand price positioning and ensure there is a strong team to execute the best logistics, marketing, press and branding. It is crucial for brands to think about the customer demographic they are appealing to and to stick to it. It is easy to look left and right when developing a successful brand, but keeping focused on its core DNA is essential. Look at the competition, but don’t let it distract you. OHLALA – How important is it to MATCHES to support new talents? Liane – At MATCHES, we are continually developing our edit to offer the best product and experience for every moment in our customers’ lives. Our clients enjoy the journey of discovery, so new talent is part of this; we search for brands with a strong product offering and the potential to scale and develop over time. We have supported many emerging brands over the years in their journey to becoming commercially strong brands in the luxury fashion industry.

OHLALA – How did this partnership with FTA start? What is MATCHES’ role? Liane – Since its inception, we have been proud partners of Fashion Trust Arabia – a first of its kind, unique philanthropic initiative. Our partnership with FTA is part of our commitment to championing emerging talent on a global level. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work alongside Tania Fares, the co-founder of FTA, and their exceptional team to support such a diverse range of designers across the MENA region. As part of our partnership, we provide a year-long mentorship programme to the winning designers across various departments of the business, from branding to communications, logistics and e-commerce, and provide guidance on how they can develop their business model in a way which stays true to them. OHLALA – What message do you want to leave to MATCHES’ customers in Qatar? Liane – Having a personal approach has always been very important to us; we actually founded the business over 30 years ago with bricks-andmortar stores, but we have been able to evolve as a digital luxury business, integrating this point of view into everything that we do. We offer a global styling service, working with clients from Europe to the Middle East and beyond, offering sartorial advice and assistance around the clock. Our team keep our clients informed about the latest launches, from our incredibly rare curation of handbags (in partnership with Sellier) to our unique edit of established and new designers. OHLALA – What do you like most or would highlight about Doha? Liane – What strikes me most is Doha’s dynamic fashion scene, blending tradition and innovation. The city’s commitment to promoting local and international designers and its dedication to the arts has put Doha on the global fashion map. Exploring M7, Qatar’s epicentre for innovation and entrepreneurship in design, fashion and tech, is at the top of my list! HLALA experienced the enchanting city of Istanbul thanks to a first-class collaboration between Turkish Airlines and the five-star Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul. A magical three-day and two-night experience is what awaited us, along with all the fine dining and exotic urban adventure we could have hoped for. TURKISH AIRLINES Travelling business class with the renowned Turkish Airlines proved nothing less than exceptional. Along with the professional and hassle-free nature of the check-in and boarding experiences, the flight itself was exactly as we would want it to be. We took full advantage of the option to screen off our space and settle down on the lie-flat seats – they open into a 188cm bed, with pillow and blanket provided – and with lip balm, ear plugs, eye mask and fluffy socks from the amenity kit, we were soon snoozing gently. We awoke to be presented with a delicious meal, flying chefs ensure Turkish Airlines’ Business Class passengers enjoy the finest quality international cuisines and beverages, all served on posh tableware. It’s as if your holiday starts in the sky. For the rest of the journey, we made the most of the comprehensive inflight entertainment options to catch up with the latest films before our smooth landing in Istanbul. OUR ARRIVAL Collected from the airport by the hotel’s concierge service, we meandered our way through the bustling streets of Istanbul, catching glimpses of the city’s grand architecture en route. From mosques to museums, from boutiques to bazaars, this enthralling destination has it all. The captivating combination of the sights, sounds and smells emanating from this vibrant location beckoned us to explore this historic metropolis and all the treasures held within.

THE SHANGRI-LA BOSPHORUS, ISTANBUL As soon as our feet touched the ground beneath the multi-award-winning hotel’s portico, we were welcomed by the smiling faces of staff who ensured, from that moment, we wanted for nothing throughout our stay. The quick and cheerful booking process meant we were escorted to our rooms within five minutes of entering the lobby. En route, we took in the impressive makeup of this grand hotel, the design and layout of which was inspired by its Asian roots. From exquisite marble floors and walls to grand chandeliers and lavish decorative touches, we often felt we were in the fictional Shangri-La kingdom itself. THE ROOMS The hotel generously provided us with one of their Premier Bosphorus Rooms. As soon as the door opened, we knew we would be more than comfortable for the duration of the visit. What we noticed first about the 60sq/m room was the stunning views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait, compliments of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Shifting our attention to the room’s amenities, we were impressed by the spacious nature of the layout. All furnishings were modern and of superb quality, accentuated by soothing colour tones and plush fabrics. Most impressive was the marble-clad master bathroom, complete with a rain shower, heated floors and a mirror-embedded television. Perhaps the most important feature was the generously sized bed that proved to be both supportive and comfortable. We had absolutely no problem nodding off to sleep during our stay. After settling in, we were given a private tour of the hotel, including a glimpse of the various other rooms on offer. Consisting of 163 guest rooms and 23 suites, the property provides luxurious accommodations to suit all guests’ preferences, with all options sure to impress even the most discerning hotel critics. FINE DINING The Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul houses a few high-end culinary venues. Over the course of our stay, we got to dine at these various spots, savouring every minute of our experience.

IST TOO During our three days at the hotel, we feasted several times at IST TOO, a venue offering an array of international dishes. Lucky enough to sample both breakfast and lunchtime menus, we were hugely impressed by the assortment of Mediterranean, Southeast Asian, Turkish and Japanese dishes on offer. We partook in the Turkish breakfast and the comprehensive à la carte lunch menu. From the caviar to the extensive meat, seafood and sushi options, we loved it all and almost certainly gained a pound or two. SHANG PALACE The Shang Palace is an exceptional dining venue serving authentic ChineseCantonese dishes. Headed up by Michelin-starred Chef Gordon Leung, we were fortunate to enjoy not one but two unforgettable dining occasions. First was the 10th-anniversary menu created and prepared by the great Gordon himself. Comprising of several East Asian-inspired courses, we banqueted for several joyful hours before rolling back to our rooms. The second experience came in two parts. It began with a morning tour of the Beşiktaş Bazaar Fish Market, led by the Executive Chef. All present selected several items, including whole fresh fish and various types of seafood. The hotel took care of our selections and, at lunchtime, Chef Gordon prepared these purchases to perfection, complementing them with several mouth-watering sides. QUICK MUST MENTIONS In addition to all the exceptional meals at the hotel, we also savoured sunset drinks on the Shangri-La suite terrace, enjoyed a Pinktober Afternoon Tea Experience at the Lobby Lounge, and were fortunate enough to partake in a Sunset Yacht Cruise along the Bosphorus, with scrumptious pass-around delicacies on board. HOTEL AMENITIES Our before-mentioned private tour also revealed the numerous first-class amenities within the hotel. Along with the two impressive ballrooms and nine versatile conference and function rooms is the Health Club. This venue offers a full range of exercise and recreation facilities that include an indoor heated swimming pool, a hot whirlpool and a state-of-the-art gymnasium.

CHI, THE SPA One of the most memorable moments of our stay was the pampering we received at Chi, Shangri-La’s in-house spa. In this tranquil environment, patrons receive treatments designed to “indulge the senses, soothe the body, and revitalise the spirit”. I opted for the Turkish Hamman treatment that included the ritual of a Turkish bath and a traditional stimulating body scrub. A stress-relieving full-body foam massage, along with refreshing water therapy, a hair wash and a body moisturisation with milk and honey, were also part of this sublime experience. IDEAL LOCATION Thanks to the hotel’s perfect location, we could easily access the most sought-after destinations in Istanbul. Amongst our many mini-city adventures was a ferry ride to the Asian side of the city. Positioned across from the hotel, the ferry station offered direct passage to the east of Istanbul, where we gratefully explored all the historical, recreational and shopping locations. PARTING IS SUCH SWEET SORROW All too soon, it was time to head home. Taking the sting out of leaving this hotel paradise was another business class experience on our now favourite, Turkish Airlines – a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on the magnificence of our Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul adventure. Residing at the heart of the edifice, KAIA is positioned to the left after crossing the grand bandstand. Stepping into this establishment is akin to embarking on a journey back in time, immersed in the captivating glamour of the 1970s. Throughout the hotel, this theme echoes, evoking an aura of cool sophistication befitting the refined patrons it attracts. As I entered KAIA, the mellow tunes of subtle jazz filled the air, lending a delightful ambience to the restaurant’s atmosphere. The space was cleverly sectioned off, affording a sense of privacy, making each seating area feel exclusive, enveloped by heavy velvet curtains that gracefully partitioned the space. The décor exudes a seamless blend of chic modernity and timeless elegance. Plush, comfortable chairs and sleek benches nestle around scalloped tables, inviting guests to indulge in a truly opulent dining experience. The soft glow of low-level lighting, cast by ornate lamps strategically placed throughout the room, bathes the space in a warm, intimate aura. The choice of colours, an exquisite blend of burnt orange and glamorous greys, accentuates the refined ambience. Patterned carpet adorns the floor, contributing to the visual allure of the venue. The perfectly contrasting tones and intricate patterns captivate the eye, ensuring a constantly stimulating visual experience. On this visit, we sampled a range of KAIA’s most popular dishes, all of which were utterly delicious, but what follows are our must-tries. The first to arrive was the spectacular Crispy Crab Salad served in a magnificent tower; it was a dish that truly struck a chord with its vibrant combination of flavours and textures. An ensemble of delightful ingredients, crisp cucumber slices provided a refreshing crunch, while a hint of spiciness added a tantalising kick to every bite. The finishing touch was the impeccably crispy noodles that encased the entire creation, imparting a satisfying crunch.

Sat inside, the shredded crab, with its succulent flesh, fused seamlessly with the creamy richness of avocado. Served with it was the Miso Aubergine. The aubergine, cooked to perfection, boasted a soft, velvety flesh that effortlessly melted in the mouth. Its meaty texture was enhanced by the infusion of miso, creating a depth of flavour that was simply exquisite. The dish was elegantly decorated, a true feast for the eyes. The glossy, charred aubergine skin contrasted beautifully with the pale, creamy miso glaze. Another popular dish here is the JFC ( Japanese Fried Chicken), which is, as you would expect, crunchy, succulent and moreish! KAIA’s design boasts an open kitchen, alive with the hustle and bustle of talented chefs preparing delectable dishes. This enabled us to watch some of our sushi being hand-crafted and whet our appetite for what was to come! We tasted the Beef & Reef Roll, a combination of Wagyu striploin, succulent shrimp tempura and a generous dollop of smooth onion marmalade. The delicate touch of yuzu kosho mayo added a zingy burst of citrusy freshness, while the velvety teriyaki sauce lent a rich and savoury note. If you like your sushi warm, you will love this! To add to the mix, six types of Nigiri, each portioned perfectly to tuck into in one bite. The selection included tuna, salmon, mackerel, shrimp, yellowtail and seabass, plenty enough to share. A memorable dish from the evening’s selection? The Tuna Poke. Each element was meticulously crafted, ensuring a symphony of colours and textures that left me in awe. First, the Avocado Rose. Delicately formed, it stood proudly amidst the dish, a testament to the artisan skill employed. The vibrant green hues of the avocado petals contrasted beautifully with the soft, pink-hued tuna, causing my eyes to deceive me momentarily, mistaking the fish for the luscious shades of a ripe watermelon. Speaking of the tuna, its cubed form shimmered with an astonishing brightness reminiscent of a

precious gemstone. As my fork gently pierced the surface, the smoothness of its texture was revealed, a velvety sensation that effortlessly melted in my mouth – the epitome of culinary indulgence and a healthy choice to boot. Moving on to some options from the Robata Grill, Peking Duck truly embodied the essence of an immersive dining experience. As I gazed upon the magnificent dish before me, I couldn’t help but marvel at its fun and interactive nature. The meticulous hours invested in the preparation were evident in the precise chopping of ingredients. Oh, the crispy skin! It crackled audibly as I took my first bite. Accompanying this culinary masterpiece was a generous helping of hoisin sauce, its tangy sweetness complementing the savoury duck. (For those seeking an extra fiery kick, a side of chilli awaited, poised to add an explosive twist to the flavours.) Thin, stretchy pancakes delighted my senses as the hand-rolled construction melted in my mouth, revealing succulent, tender meat beneath. For me, this was sheer perfection – a balance between delicate and indulgent. On to the delightful sweet selection, we sampled two contrasting dessert options: The Chocolate Lava Cake and the Frozen Mochi. The first was a warm, velvety treat, with molten chocolate oozing from its heart, encased within a fragile exterior. The moment the spoon pierced the surface, a river of creamy cocoa goodness cascaded into the bowl, I lapped it up, as each mouthful left me craving more. Alongside, the vibrant colours of the mochi ice cream tempted me to take a closer look. As my teeth sank into the soft exterior, a burst of refreshing flavours exploded within my mouth. The sweet, luscious ice cream harmoniously melded with the delicate chewiness of the mochi casing, creating a symphony of textures and tastes – well worth the full feeling if I do say myself. KAIA expertly surpassed our expectations and provided an unforgettable experience that delighted all of our senses. uilding on the success of their third generation Flying Spur, world-renowned premium car manufacturer Bentley unveiled the new Flying Spur Hybrid. The evolution of this highlypraised range establishes the addition of a family of hybrids under the Bentley brand for the first time. Thanks to the team at Bentley Qatar, OHLALA recently received the opportunity to inspect and road-test this four-door, luxury Grand Touring saloon. IMMACULATE EXTERIOR DESIGN What we noticed first about the exceptional exterior design was the electronically retractable Flying B mascot adorning the hood for the first time on a modern-day Flying Spur – a symbol of the brand’s almost unmatched success and prestige. The car’s keyless entry system links to a welcoming lighting sequence that illuminates and deploys the mascot as the driver approaches the vehicle. Equally impressive was the imposing radiator matrix, finished in gloss black, with bright chrome surround and vertical vanes that hark back to the 1957 Bentley S1 Continental Flying Spur. This eye-catching element is complemented by standard state-of-the-art LED matrix headlights featuring unique cut-crystal-effect detailing. Simply stunning! At the sides, the increased road presence of this immaculate motorcar became even more apparent. This latest generation exhibits sleeker yet

more muscular lines than its predecessors – sweeping over the haunches and along the length of the body. The sultry silhouette of this splendid saloon is accentuated by striking and elegant 22-inch, black-painted 10-spoke wheels. Shifting to the back end, we admired the elegantly proportioned, tapered rear – specifically designed to feature the written ‘Bentley’ script beneath the traditional winged ‘B’ motif. We appreciated the superb design of the rear wrap-around lamps that utilise the familiar Bentley ‘B’ graphic, also displaying the cut-crystal effect. LUXURIOUS INTERIOR Slipping inside the 2023 Flying Spur, we were instantly in awe of the contemporary and uplifting space that welcomed us. We found the luxurious cabin to skilfully combine key elements of the Bentley brand’s DNA with cutting-edge technology and some of the finest automotive craftsmanship we’ve ever seen. Firstly, we loved how the design lines of the interior connect the front and rear areas to create a seamlessly integrated style. Fine attention to detail was apparent when seated in the cockpit. On the Flying Spur’s dashboard, the brand has replaced the traditional round ‘bullseye’ vents with freshly crafted, precision detailed, diamond knurled vents on either side of the timeless Bentley clock, itself featuring optional diamond knurling and standard bronze detailing.

The wooden accents are crafted from 80-year-old Burr Walnut and handstained with a dark finish. We found this technique to emphasise the natural black colouring of the wood, thereby highlighting the intricate pattern of the grain. Our test drive model included three-dimensional, diamond-quilted leather inserts in the doors and rear quarter panels. The front seats, featuring a twin-flute design, were equally gorgeous, as were the new, supremely comfortable straight flute seats in the rear, complete with 14way adjustment and five massaging modes. STATE-OF-THE-ART INFOTAINMENT AND TECH Bentley have retained a timeless quality in their new Flying Spur while incorporating cutting-edge technology into its makeup. When we pressed the engine start button, the veneer section in the middle of the dashboard rotated to reveal a 12.3-inch HD touchscreen. This easyto-navigate system features three customisable digital tiles that display information previously selected by the driver. In the rear, a multi-functional, five-inch colour touch screen remote control is mounted atop the centre console. Although seamlessly integrated, we effortlessly removed it for remote use with a mere touch of a button. This unit allows the back passengers to control many features of the car including climate, window blinds, mood lighting, sound system and rear seat massage functions. Other must-mentions include the standard night vision infrared camera, the optional head-up display and the full suite of state-of-the-art driver assistance and safety features.

A PERFECT BALANCE OF POWER & PERFORMANCE Once out on the roads, we could truly appreciate the smooth efficiency that is synonymous with this top-of-the-market brand. Bentley’s new, high-status hybrid houses a 2.9-litre V6 TFSI petrol engine, coupled with an advanced 100kW electric motor-generator, and a ZF eight-speed, dual-clutch gearbox, featuring all-wheel drive. It’s Looking a Lot Like Winter The nice weather is finally here and Miss Ohlala highlights the best of this time of year in the Middle East.

Winter will officially hit the calendar on December 22 and stay until March 20, 2024, which means temperatures will drop considerably (by Middle Eastern standards), and we can finally enjoy the best the cold season has to offer in this part of the world. Here are our favourite things to do: Outdoor Gatherings. It might sound strange to anyone in the rest of the world, but winter is when we get to sit outside and enjoy the pleasant weather with friends and family. The barbecue season is open and garden lights flicker to the sound of laughter and joyful moments. Gardening. People use this time to take care of their gardens, plant flowers and grow vegetables such as cherry tomatoes and herbs. It's also the period for Farmers’ Markets offering fresh local produce and street food. Al Fresco Dining. There is no better time to dine under the stars 98

than during the winter months. An array of restaurants open their outdoor spaces and offer special menus. During chillier evenings, the heaters are turned on to create a cosy atmosphere. Exercising.
