Editor’s Letter

It’s that time of the year again when we revamp our wardrobes and embrace new styles. Each season has its particularities – some trends are repeated from previous years, while others aren’t that popular yet. This time, leave your comfy clothes at home and invest in more polished looks. The colour palette is relatively neutral, with a few vivid accents. Even though it doesn’t get cold enough in this part of the world, don’t miss out on wearing boots and stunning coats!

This month we had a beautification spree at the newly opened salon, The Beauty Box. We went there for highlights, a hair treatment, mani and pedi, and we share our experience with you. Still on the subject of wellness, we had a personal trainer session at Dessange Paris Bahrain – summer break is finished, and it is time to get back to a workout routine!

Looking for a quick escape? Now that the flights are back to Qatar, you can easily explore this neighbouring country that has changed so much since hosting the latest FIFA World Cup competition. We stayed at the magnificent Mandarin Oriental, Doha, for a luxurious getaway.

Eating out is one of everyone’s favourite ‘hobbies’ in Bahrain (me included), and our monthly food review happened at Cantina Kahlo, located at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. The Mexican restaurant left a great impression on us – go to our Chic Eats pages to discover the new dishes that have been added to their menu. As enthusiasts of luxury cars, this month, we tested the Range Rover Velar, a modern vehicle with incomparable comfort.

Enjoy the last days of official summer while reading the pages we created especially for you!

UNIQUE CARRIERS

Women are either obsessed with shoes or handbags (sometimes both!). This month we’ve selected a few exquisite bags from the new collections that come with some twists. Which one is your favourite?

Winter is the season for fluffy and soft clothing items, but also accessories with extra volume. Celine is one of many brands betting on woolly handbags – the good thing is that they double as a warm cuddler!

Some bags don’t even look like bags. This JW Anderson number looks more like a paper envelope. The designer is known for his urban influences and bizarre and creative accessories.

Matching shoes and bags is a classic style move. However, clothing and handbag twinnies are a new trend. Etro opted for a zig-zag motif to camouflage its carrier in a skirt with a similar print.

Along the line of handbags that don’t look like bags, went beyond and created an emblematic carrier resembling a dollhouse. The accessory reflects the sophistication of the modern French style that inspired the AW 2023/2024 collection.

Moschino means funkiness. The brand likes to create handbags that look like clothing pieces. This one is inspired by a classic trench coat, while others resemble a biker jacket or tuxedo.

EBONY AND IVORY

The classic black and white contrasting duo is once again a popular choice during the cold months of the year. You can combine the two colours in separate pieces, but they look trendier when teamed up in one item, such as in a dress, pair of shoes or handbag. Zebra Power, here we go!

BOOT UP!

The footwear for the cold months is undoubtedly knee-high black boots! Wear them on top of skinny trousers, under midi skirts or with mini dresses. They work like shin warmers and, when paired with black skirts, they create the skirt + trousers effect – a trend of the AW2023 season.

It’s a Pink World!

The Barbie fever continues, and Lush Cosmetics has partnered with Mattel to create the limited-edition Barbie x Lush Collection. The capsule offers a complete range of self-care in its most famous hue: pink! An ode to celebrate women and their visionary accomplishments, such as the invention of the bath bomb by Mo Constantine, Lush Co-Founder, in her garden in 1989. Today the brand sells one bath bomb per second. “Barbie continues to push boundaries and doesn’t let anyone underestimate her abilities. We imagined what Barbie’s self-care routine would look like and created this range, meant to be used and loved by all,” said Melody Morton, Creative Concepts Director at Lush Cosmetics. The Barbie x Lush Collection is made by hand, using the highest quality ingredients. The assortment features ‘naked’ products that don’t require any packaging –from soaps to bath bombs and bubble bars.

Fashion Collab

Coach has launched Coach x Observed By Us, a collection in collaboration with Los Angeles-based illustrator and designer Jessica Herschko and actor Kirsten Dunst. The capsule features the whimsical artwork of the duo, re-imagined through the lens of the house’s American design language. It showcases ready-to-wear clothes, bags, footwear and accessories that capture the collaborators’ appreciation for iconic American archetypes like T-shirts, hoodies, floral dresses and jeans – re-created with handmade touches. To compose the collection, Coach Creative Director Stuart Vevers and the duo took inspiration from pieces found in Dunst’s closet, blending the playfulness and nostalgia that defines her style with the house’s legacy of craftsmanship and spirit of self-expression. The palette is inspired by Coach’s heritage colours, explored in saturated hues that convey an offbeat, youthful innocence.

Help Where It Is Needed

The London-based fashion brand with a Middle Eastern heritage, QASIMI, has launched a charity initiative to support UNICEF efforts to fight the urgent humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan due to the ongoing conflict. The initiative seeks to provide critical aid and resources to the affected children and families, striving to make a positive impact in the midst of challenging circumstances. To do so, the brand is donating all proceeds from the sale of the HOAG T-SHIRT through the QASIMI website to this cause. The regular fit jersey tee has Arabic text ‘A Passion For Something Absent’ digitally printed on the front and ‘As Lost As You Are’ on the back in red. This initiative bridges fashion and philanthropy, offering supporters a tangible way to contribute.

The sports brand adidas partnered with the sustainable label Humanrace to release the Humanrace Samba Tones by Pharrel shoes in three new colourways – terracotta, charcoal and white. This luxury footwear collection continues to infuse the DNA of Humanrace through meticulous craftsmanship and materials, including premium ECCO leather. This material has a water-saving technology that salvages 20 litres per hide (hidden water is water that is not felt or seen and is required for almost every step in the production processes for many raw materials and finished products). Photographers Sheltens and Abbenes captured the essence of the collection with their signature product photography. The images contrast the new colourways with the previously launched Humanrace Samba capsule.

A WINTER’S TALE

The sun is still hitting us with intense UV rays, and it feels as though high summer will not leave any time soon. However, the fashion world has already moved on to the next season, and we, as good fashionistas, follow their lead and bring you the trends from the autumn and winter 2023/2024 (AW 2023/2024) collections.

With the pandemic far behind us, this round of fashion weeks marked the return of full normality at these events. Buyers were back eager to stock up, and all brands resumed physical shows with crowds attending the presentations.

Despite still seeing a lot of collections dedicated to daily wear, the approach was way less casual, and stay-at-home extra comfy clothes were not widely spotted – forget jogging suits and puffer jackets. The pieces have been elevated, focusing on beautiful creations and high-quality materials with a couture touch. There were some pops of colour, with pink, yellow and red dominating the vivid shades. However, most fashion houses opted for neutral tones, predominantly grey and beige. The women’s ready-to-wear collections for AW 2023/2024 highlight a resilient and powerful woman who borrows key elements from men’s wardrobes, such as tailored pieces and ties. She is discreet but sophisticated, emanating luxuriously elegant vibes. It’s time to conquer the world in your best outfit!

Vintage VOYAGE

DURING THE 1940s, CLOTHES HAD A UTILITARIAN FEEL DUE TO THE WAR. SQUARE SHOULDERS, NARROW WAISTS AND TAILORED SKIRTS JUST BELOW THE KNEE WERE POPULAR ITEMS. IT WAS THE PERIOD IN WHICH CHRISTIAN DIOR CREATED THE ICONIC NEW LOOK WITH FULL SKIRTS AND WAIST-CINCHING JACKETS. THIS SEASON, THE TAKE IS A BIT MORE CONTEMPORARY BUT STILL SHOWS THE AUSTERE VIBE OF THE TIME WITH A TOUCH OF FEMININITY.

Chopard showcases exquisite high-end jewellery pieces as part of the Red Carpet Collection 2023.

JEWELLERY Edit

Swiss luxury brand Chopard annually showcases peak ingenuity and expertise in creating unique works of high jewellery art as part of the Red Carpet Collection. Redefined each year to correspond with the Cannes Film Festival, the collection explores and brings to life exciting designs inspired by distinct themes.

The maison’s artistic director Caroline Scheufele chose art as the main source of inspiration for the 2023 edition of the Red Carpet Collection. Caroline designed 76 haute joaillerie masterpieces for the film festival’s 76th year that take influence and explore seven different art mediums – architecture, sculpture, painting, music, literature, dance and cinema.

These seven noble art forms were celebrated through fascinating works reflecting Scheufele’s boundless curiosity. The prominent place she occupies in the creative world, her prolific travels and the artists she encounters continually hone her vision and open up vast realms of inspiration that she brilliantly reinterprets through these treasures.

Mingling her creativity with age-old jewellery-making expertise passed down from generation to generation in the Chopard workshops, the Red Carpet Collection brings a whole range of emotions to the red carpet.

The brilliance of the collection is evident throughout. Putting sculpture in the spotlight is a ring boasting a 127-carat central yellow sapphire supported by a group of antique-style gold sculptures carved in gold on a shank set with brilliant-cut diamonds.

A stunning necklace featuring diamond and sapphire feathers skilfully crafted to form gossamer-light volutes, signifyies an ode to literature and a tribute to authors.

Dance is represented by a necklace and matching pair of earrings featuring diamond corollas gracefully evoking the dainty flutter of ballerinas’ tutus.

A Fairmined-certified ethical white gold choker delicately set with briolette-cut diamonds celebrates music through its various rows of gemstones tracing the lines of a musical score.

The play on colour in a butterfly ring, an insect often depicted in the decorative arts to symbolise the ephemeral nature of life, appears to recall the play on colours and forms mastered by painters.

Architecture is interpreted through an elegant tanzanite necklace distinguished by its clean-cut symmetry and carefully studied proportions. Finally, celebrating cinema, a favourite art form for Chopard is expressed through a moon pendant, subtly hinting at the darkness without which it is impossible to fully immerse oneself in the emotions of a feature film.

An Ode to NATURAL BEAUTY

The new line reveals the brand’s vision of nude, highlighting every woman’s natural grace through a colour palette designed for every skin tone.

The new harmonies are spotted in the iconic products: Rouge G and Ombres G. On lips, beige, rosy or brown shades are worn like a tone-on-tone veil or create a contrasting effect, chosen in a version darker than the skin. The eyeshadows bring out the eyes in two exclusive combos inspired by skin tones and boasting a subtle spicy touch.

Perfect Smile

Rouge G promises a spectacular result on lips, thanks to its seamless, comfortable and ultra-sensorial textures and high pigmentation. The satin version creates vibrant and hydrated lips. The velvet matte alternative combines softness, depth of colour and pure comfort, with a 16-hour hold. The 12 shades in the colour palette created for the Rouge G Naturally collection are divided into six satin shades and six velvet mattes.

Magnetic Stare

Rich in pigments, the eyeshadows in the Ombres G quad deliver long-lasting colour, offering unparalleled depth. Each set includes three ultra-sensory finishes: satin, metallic and matte. The new matte formula is inspired by the skin’s texture. It is softer and airy, delivering a deeper make-up result.

Two new harmonies have joined the Ombres G catalogue: Wild Nudes is a luminous and contrasting array of shades that balance the softness of pink and beige and the intensity of a matte chocolate hue. Undressed Brown is a natural yet daring quad, composed of a pale satin pink and a dazzling metallic copper, teamed with an intense matte brown and a warm satin brown.

NEW CHAPTER

Paco Rabanne becomes Rabanne. The well-known fashion and fragrance house enters a new era and launches its first make-up collection.

The iconic fashion brand Paco Rabanne is celebrating its 60th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the label is going through a rebranding, changing the name to only Rabanne – for a more international spirit. To celebrate further, the maison is also entering a new territory by launching its first-ever make-up collection. The beauty line brings a range of high-performance formulas that fuse unexpected shades with fashion fabric-inspired metallic finishes. From fashion to beauty, the collection features moods from the legendary makeup guru Diane Kendal, appointed Global Beauty Creative Director for Rabanne Beauty.

Inspired by the maison’s pioneering fashion legacy, Rabanne Makeup comes in striking, high-gloss gold, silver metallic and mirrored packaging. Each product is inspired by the codes and symbols of the catwalk, including the brand’s iconic 1969 bag and XL link jewellery, creating ultra-desirable pieces for the Rabanne tribe to collect.

Born in Paris, made to forge a new future, Rabanne Makeup invites its wearers to express themselves via four bold universes: Eyephoria for endlessly expressive eyes, Rouge Rabanne for a Parisian lip signature, Nudes for a luminous, fresh complexion and Arts Factory for an array of artistry-inspired products.

POWERED BY BEAUTY

There is a new salon in town: The Beauty Box. The place is cute and feminine and makes you feel empowered. Team OHLALA paid a visit to find out more.

57 www.ohlala-magazine.com SALON Focus

Bahrain’s female community can celebrate the opening of another beauty destination. The Beauty Box is owned by Zara Ismail, a British-born entrepreneur who, like many expats (myself included), now calls Bahrain home. She is the force behind this new venture, a space that offers hair, nails and other beauty treatments with much more to come.

Located on Budaiya Road at Grove Village, it is a great addition to this neighbourhood, with a mix of expats and locals always looking for a ‘closeby’ salon to have their beauty needs sorted. OHLALA was invited to try some of their treatments, and I couldn’t miss the opportunity to get my golden locks looked after.

If you are a highlights enthusiast like me, you must know that it is not easy to find a place to carry out this style with the necessary attention required. Even though we have a mix of different nationalities on the island, not all salons have experienced staff to offer this kind of service. It is also laborious work that can take long hours, so a patient hairdresser that knows what she is doing is very important. Not to mention that it is a type of hair process that can go wrong very quickly. If you open social media channels, you will see many hair disasters related to highlights. This means that I always have a slight concern when trying a new place, but after talking to Zara, I felt confident and was excited to visit the salon.

58 www.ohlala-magazine.com

SALON Focus

The Grove Village is a small street mall with facades looking like charming little houses. The Beauty Box is one of them and as you enter the space, you can see that the décor has been carefully chosen to give a cosy yet modern vibe. A soft pink with a gracious old rose tint and black accents paint the space with encouraging sayings all over the place – lots of Instagrammable corners.

I went there with my colleague, who experienced a manicure and pedicure while I had my hair revamped. One of the things I liked a lot about my experience was that I had a long talk with Rupa, the hairdresser, before she started working on my tresses. I told her what I wanted done, she then gave me her input and ideas and, together, we decided how to move forward. As I have a lot of grey hair (signs of experience), I have been getting really light highlights, almost platinum. She advised me to go for a more natural effect to match my complexion and reduce the contrast with my roots – we then decided to go for this option.

If you have highlights, you must know that it takes time to achieve the best result, so I went prepared to sit for a while. I once went to a place that did it in two hours and the result was dreadful. I was glad that Rupa was on the same page and took her time to make sure the bleaching process of each section was removed when it was time before moving on to other parts of my hair – it’s meticulous work that involves a bit of science, knowledge and patience.

My hair was in a poor state and after the highlights and toner, Rupa treated my locks with L’Oreal’s Vitamino Color, which gives radiance to coloured hair, leaving it nourished, soft and shiny. It protects the hair fibre against oxidants that affect the vibrance of salon hair colour services. I usually don’t give enough credit to hair treatments, but they make a big difference and even after the bleaching session, my hair felt soft and bouncy. I do need to create the habit of treating my locks more often – note to self!

59 www.ohlala-magazine.com

SALON Focus

My worry about going for a more natural blond effect was that it wouldn’t cover my grey hair, but it actually blended very well and I am very pleased with the final colour. They will definitely see me again in the future. Being blonde requires a lot of maintenance and frequent visits to the salon are a must!

Regarding the manicure and pedicure, this is what my colleague Tanushree Mathur had to say about her experience:

“A big fan of bright colours, I walked over to the funky nail wall, and my eyes went immediately to this fabulous tropical green! I usually stick to regular polish, but Zara asked me to give gel a try – since it lasts much longer and stands the test of home chores and vigorous workout sessions, I was convinced to give it a go. I was very hesitant at first since my past experience of gel polish in a different salon was not a positive one and it almost destroyed my fingertips. However, my nail technician, Maya, assured me she would take care of my nails, especially when it is time to remove them.

I then sat on the comfortable green chairs in the salon’s nail area right in front of a fun sign that says: Nails Before Males. That made me giggle a

bit and, to be fair, actually put me at ease. Underneath my feet there was a basin with a tap. The feeling of the warm water on my feet was just amazing! For the pre-preparation, Maya added lavender salt and gave my feet a good soak. The next steps were cutting and filing the toenails and then trimming the extra skin in the cuticles with a cuticle eraser. I am also very picky with my cuticles, as I have had a bad experience with this in the past too, Maya was extremely gentle with my feet and hands. She started with a nice scrub, followed by filing the hard skin on my heels and calloused areas.

Completely at ease and totally relaxed, Maya dried my feet, gave me a relaxing massage with a 24-carat gold scrub before applying the nail polish and the cuticle oil. My feet felt so soft and hydrated. She then moved to my hands. The same process started, cutting and filing the nails and then gently working through my fingers. She used a lovely scrub and a soft massage to finish the session, and I absolutely loved it! She went on to apply the gel nail polish and then I was done.

With treated hands and eye-catching nails, I was ready to take on the day!”

We had the opportunity of having a long chat with Zara Ismail, The Beauty Box owner and director, and we bring more details about this new beauty haven.

OHLALA – How did your passion for beauty become your professional career? What made you create The Beauty Box?

Zara Ismail – When I first moved to the Gulf 10 years ago from the UK, I struggled to find a salon that felt anything like the salon experience we had in London at the time. I found either the salon staff were really good at their craft but didn’t have the personality to build a friendly rapport with their clients or the opposite, really friendly and chatty but not great at hair or nails. I have lived in Kuwait, Qatar and now Bahrain and there were only a few salons that delivered on quality, experience and price for me, which should not be the case considering how many salons there are in these markets. I come from a retail operations background, mainly having managed beauty brands, so I really understand the importance of customer experience and how personal it is when you are having treatments done at the salon.

As a client, I want expert staff, products and services – you shouldn’t have to compromise on one or the other – you can and should have it all!

OHLALA – And for whom did you create it?

Zara – All women! Whether you are in your teens or your eighties, housewife or working mum, Bahraini or Expat –it doesn’t matter – The Beauty Box is for all! This was one of the main reasons for creating the brand. Women from all backgrounds, shapes, sizes and colours are welcome – it’s an inviting, fun and friendly place for all.

OHLALA – What can they expect at The Beauty Box? What is the message you want to pass to your customers?

Zara – We aim to provide that UK feel of an expert salon with new and trendy products and services alongside a friendly, professional team of experts in their fields. That being said, we provide a quality experience at an affordable price. Looking after how you look and feel without having to break the bank – it is a luxury, but it’s a luxury we all deserve.

OHLALA – What is the central concept, and what is the biggest differential of The Beauty Box?

Zara – The biggest differential point is that I want this business to become a real force for good. We have already started a collaboration with the Little Princess Trust in the UK, which collects hair donations from all over the world and makes wigs for children and young people who have lost their hair due to cancer or other treatments. When coming up with the salon plan, which has been literally years in the making for me, it was very important to use it to give back to the community too. I grew up with my parents doing a lot of charity work in the UK, which has stayed with me in adulthood. My father uses his business to do good in the world and I want to be able to do the same with The Beauty Box.

OHLALA – What are the services offered at the salon? Which one would you highlight?

Zara – The reason I named the salon The Beauty Box was because I wanted it to be a one-stop shop – all of your beauty needs in one box. We have a wide variety of services, but we mainly specialise in hair cuts, colours and treatments and nail services from manicures and pedicures to nail extensions. We also offer hair removal, such as waxing and threading, and eyelash extensions. As our team grows, we will provide other services such as facials, permanent make-up, etc.

OHLALA – What are the plans for this beauty haven?

Zara – Watch this space – I can’t tell you all my secrets!

GETTING BACK INTO WORKING OUT

After more than a month of laziness, Fernanda Langhammer found her way back into fitness with the help of Dessange Paris Bahrain.

Summer is always a good time to escape the heat and travel on holiday. The problem with extended trips is that we end up getting out of our exercise routines – at least I did. I was pretty consistent with my running and core exercises, but now that I am back on the island, I have been finding many excuses not to get on track again. I was pretty excited to visit Dessange this month for a Personal Trainer (PT) session at their amazing health club to see if this would be the push I desperately needed.

Dessange is that place where you feel at home – with the extra perk of having a team of excellent professionals at your disposal. You can exercise, head for a relaxing massage at the spa, get your hair and nails done, all under the same roof and have a healthy drink from the juice bar at the end of the day. I arrived at the welcoming reception and got my key to the locker. After my PT session, I would have to head to the office, so a shower and change

was definitely something I would need. I left my belongings inside the cubby, already looking forward to being embraced by the fluffiest robe in the world (at least in my world) – I was happily anticipating it after my workout.

I arrived at the health club located on the upper floor of the Dessange villa and Maja, the Health Club Manager, introduced me to Tracy, a new trainer from South Africa who had just joined the team. Tracy was super excited as I was her first client for PT in Bahrain – she’s got years of experience in the field, though. She started by asking me my goals while we moved to the elliptical machine so I could start my five-minute warm-up. Toning is always my main exercise goal, so she planned a full-body circuit to work different muscles. We started working on my abs with a yoga ball; initially, it seemed easy and fun, but it quickly became pretty challenging. For each exercise, I had to repeat it three times. According to exercise

experts, repetition of a specific movement invokes muscle memory; as you repeat, your performance during each set will improve. One of the best things about working out with a trainer is that she will keep the motivation levels high. Even when you think you can’t do something, she finds a way to help you keep up.

We then worked on my biceps, triceps and inner and outer thighs (using different equipment). I noticed that the muscles I use more, such as the biceps and outer thighs were pretty easy to work with. However, my triceps and inner thighs, which I barely remembered existed, were quite tough. But with Tracy’s words of encouragement and her clear instructions, I ended my sets successfully. We also worked on squads, glutes and shoulders. I was feeling accomplished, and my serotonin (a hormone that controls our mood and is responsible for the feeling of happiness) levels were skyrocketing. However, the best part was yet to come. Tracy takes cooling off seriously, saying it is as important as the exercise. She asked me to go to the power plate, a vibrating machine that helps to reduce hip, back, pelvic floor and inner thigh pain. After the regular standing position, I also used it for knees, lower back and arms. The 30-second duration of each pose was enough to loosen my tensed muscles. I then moved to the mat on the floor for some stretching, which was done with Tracy’s help. But the cherry on top was when she started massaging some key areas of my back and legs –VIP treatment at its best after an hour of hard work. The whole idea of a comprehensive cool-down is to reduce the next day’s soreness.

Before I left Dessange, I quickly visited Michelle at the juice bar and got my green juice made with celery, cucumber, green apple, parsley, spinach, lemon and ginger – healthy and delicious! I also got a glass bottle with flavoured water in a personalised Dessange bottle to keep me hydrated during my busy days.

I must confess that I was a bit sore the next day, but mostly in the abdominal area. Tracy’s attentiveness to post-training paid off, and I am very thankful for that.

The good news is that I, indeed, went back to my exercise routine – now I just have to stick to it!

An Encounter of ICONS

For their Pre-Autumn 2023 capsule, Max Mara revisited and re-imagined Marilyn Monroe’s style.

The renowned Italian brand Max Mara found inspiration in the iconic blonde bombshell to create their Pre-Autumn 2023 collection. With their impeccable cuts and contemporary tailoring, they imagined modern Marilyn living in today’s New York City. The contemporary Marilyn is away from the Hollywood lights and wears curvaceous jeans and denim jackets in luscious shades of maquillage, such as beige, peach, powder and raspberry tones. She borrows pieces from men’s wardrobes sporting man-size carpenter pants and mechanics’ overalls, always cinched with masculine belts. Max Mara recuts them in lustrous duchesse satin and radzimir (a luxurious fabric that blends wool and silk) for hanging out at intellectual city soirées.

It’s on record that Marilyn enjoyed a daily run. The brand believes she would have embraced modern technical sports gear as enthusiastically as she adopted men’s clothes, and some sporty elements can be spotted in the collection.

As a beauty symbol, the prints highlight her make-up case – lipsticks, nail polish, mascara, blusher and perfume feature in a series of pop-art prints. Marilyn was a big fan of camel coats. Originally tokens of masculine prestige, Max Mara has claimed them to symbolise women’s empowerment. Two styles are drawn from the earliest examples in the historic Max Mara Archive. From 1961, a neatly proportioned belted wrap coat in camel-coloured cashmere and, for the in-between season, an unlined doublebreasted cappottino (a knee-length type of coat), masterfully tailored for lightness. Another iconic piece is the Max Mara Teddy Bear Coat, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2023. Max Mara marks the occasion with a re-edition of the cuddly covetable classic in an eye-catching raspberry shade. Inspired by Marilyn, Teddy Teddino is a fluffy take on the jean jacket. There’s also a collectable commemorative T-shirt featuring photographs by the celebrated artist William Wegman of his famous Weimaraners wearing the cult coat.

FASHION FORWARD

This month we had the opportunity to talk to the businesswoman behind the Instagram sensation Bella & Blue, Maryam Haji. She tells us all about her journey into this popular online store.

74 www.ohlala-magazine.com OHLALA Voices
MARYAM HAJI

OHLALA – How did fashion enter your life, and when did you decide to follow it exclusively as your profession?

Maryam Haji – I was always interested in fashion, but it wasn’t until I attended a personal stylist class in the United States that I realised how much I loved it. The course helped me to understand the different aspects of fashion. I was hooked and decided to pursue a career in the fashion business. I’m grateful that I get to do something that I love every day.

OHLALA – How did Bella & Blue start? And what exactly is the concept that you offer?

Maryam – It started in 2013 as an exclusive online business offering eagerly sourced new and unique items. Our central concept is an everyday ready-to-wear collection for women. You can find more information in our website www.bellabluebh.com

OHLALA – Why do you think Bella & Blue achieved its success so rapidly? What is the brand’s main differential?

Maryam – Our growth gained momentum when we signed an exclusive collaboration with a French-based fashion company. It really helped the brand to grow and differentiate itself from other businesses due to the tradition and quality of French fashion.

OHLALA – What do your customers look for? How do you identify what they want?

Maryam – Being an Arab woman, I understand the gap women in my region find in international fashion designs, so I tend to provide pieces that are tailored to their needs and not sacrifice quality for trends.

OHLALA – Your pieces are great for any body type as your work mostly with dresses. Do you think this is something that pleases your clients and is one of Bella & Blue’s main characteristics? Was it intentional to offer this kind of style?

Maryam – Yes, that’s right. We try to embrace the beauty of the curves and create pieces that are modest yet fashionable, and dresses are definitely effortless to wear and style.

OHLALA – You mentioned that the pandemic helped your business grow as your sales are done exclusively online. Do you want to provide your creations in a physical concept?

Maryam – For the time being, we are fully focused on being online to enhance the reach regionally and internationally. However, we are studying the potential to have pop-up stores in some of the leading malls in Bahrain in the near future.

OHLALA – Your pieces are very summery. What can we expect in the autumn and winter collections?

Maryam – We are known for our classic European-style looks. For winter, we are focusing on minimalistic designs that mimic the old-money style trending now.

OHLALA – As a Bahraini, what do you like most about your country?

Maryam – My country opened the horizon for me and supported me by all means. We definitely have the best business environment to grow.

An Urban Retreat in the Heart of Doha

OHLALA spent four days and three nights in the multi-award-winning, five-star Mandarin Oriental, Doha.

OUR ARRIVAL

As soon as our feet touched the tarmac outside Mandarin Oriental, Doha we were greeted by friendly and attentive staff ready to assist in any way possible. After a swift and hassle-free check in, we soon found ourselves in the exclusive Club Studio Suite, appreciating what was to be our home base for the next few days.

Mandarin Oriental (MO) is a five-star hotel in the centre of Msheireb Downtown Doha. We found the architecture and décor a masterful blend of chic and contemporary design with subtle touches of Qatari heritage. The hotel boasts 117 rooms, 41 suites, 91 serviced apartments, 10 exceptional dining spots, meeting facilities, event venues and an awardwinning spa.

THE ROOMS

With four categories of rooms to select from: Superior, Deluxe, Premier and Club Deluxe, along with eight suite categories – Club Studio, Studio, Junior, Deluxe, Premier, Panoramic, Baraha View Suite and the Royal Suite – there is accommodation to suit all guests’ needs and desires.

REGIONAL Escapes

The Club Studio Suite housed many beautiful features and decorative elements. These included the design incorporated into the curved gilt ceiling relief, the Qatari heritage-themed carpets, the eye-catching mosaic tiling and several other captivating details.

Staying in this room also granted access to the MO Club, an experience exclusive to Club Deluxe Room and Club Studio Suite patrons. This experience comes with many benefits including personalised service, privileged dining and private amenities which make you feel extra special. Fortunate enough to be given a tour of the two-bedroom Royal Suite on the top floor, we saw how the rich and famous experience the hotel. This exclusive accommodation features a private entrance, an open-air courtyard with reflecting pools, and a private plunge pool. From this unique vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and a bird’s-eye view of Barahat Msheireb town square.

FINE DINING

Throughout our stay, we had the chance to experience some of the outstanding culinary locations within the hotel.

Mosaic

Breakfast at Mosaic proved to be a delightful culinary occasion. This venue provides a Silk Route dining experience incorporating flavours and cuisines from Asia, the Middle East and Europe, all prepared at its nine live cooking stations. We sampled an array of sumptuous dishes throughout the meal, all freshly prepared in front of us. We particularly enjoyed the variety of Asian-style, wok-fried dishes.

79 www.ohlala-magazine.com

IZU

We were invited for lunch at IZU to experience their creative menu. Showcasing all the flavours of French Mediterranean cuisine, along with dishes inspired by the chef’s travels to England, Spain and the Middle East, we felt truly spoilt by the time the dining was done. With indoor and outdoor seating areas, along with the mezzanine floor offering an even more refined experience, this venue is sure to satisfy even the most discerning of restaurant connoisseurs.

Liang

Lunchtime at Liang proved to be another appetising affair, this time with a distinctly Chinese flavour. The venue offers superb service and an authentic Oriental dining experience. Along with the relaxed yet upmarket atmosphere, the meals on offer were nothing less than delicious. We so enjoyed the classically prepared dim sum, with its fresh ingredients, that we had to order several helpings.

Mandarin Cake Shop

One of our favourite spaces in the hotel proved to be the Mandarin Cake Shop. This quaint venue specialises in all things sweet, producing a range of cakes, artisan chocolates and delicious pastries. Perfect for a quick refreshment and bite to eat, we can honestly say we have never tasted better macaroons anywhere.

SPA AND WELLNESS

During our stay we were delighted to experience the hotel’s awardwinning, five-star spa. Spread over 3,030sq/m, the high-end facilities include nine spacious treatment rooms, two VIP suites, an exclusive couples’ suite, extensive heat and water facilities and the hotel’s first-class Fitness and Wellness Centre.

We got the chance to try out the signature Inner Strength massage. This nurturing treatment uses a blend of aromatherapy and healing massage techniques to ease physical tension and emotional anxiety. Whatever the intention, the result was a truly relaxing and energising experience.

HOMEWARD BOUND

All too soon, it was time to return home, but not before we had the chance to explore the ever-expanding city of Doha. Taking in the spectacular skyline and visiting the mesmerising museums, a vibrant food festival, world-renowned restaurants, bustling souqs and beautiful beaches, we were spoilt for choice. By the time we found ourselves seated on the return flight, we felt that, despite previous visits to the Qatari capital, we were only now properly introduced to this fascinating city.

VIVA MEXICO!

An unparalleled celebration of authentic Mexican cuisine and culture was front and centre at the unique Cantina Kahlo when Lawson Misquitta visited for a memorable experience.

82 www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHIC Eats

Along the coastline in Seef sits The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain and within it is a special place called Cantina Kahlo – a remarkable restaurant offering an immersive journey through the vibrant flavours of authentic Mexican cuisine. As we step into the eatery, I immediately find myself enthralled by the large and colourful space. Unlike many restaurants that go for more modern and contemporary styling, Cantina Kahlo couldn’t be further away. Almost as if stepping into the living room of that particular eccentric friend who unapologetically wears their influences and inspirations on their sleeve, this venue is styled ever so distinctly. The primary muse is the restaurant’s namesake, the inimitable and brilliant Mexican artist – Frida Kahlo. She adorns the walls in numerous colourful canvas paintings, along with many other motifs that spotlight Mexican culture. The restaurant offers plenty of outdoor seating, which can be thoroughly enjoyed in cooler weather. As we took our seats, we were soon greeted by the Manager, Ommar Garcia. Welcoming and very friendly, he radiated a genuine enthusiasm while hosting us. As we scanned the menu, we were made aware that 26 new dishes were recently added, and we couldn’t have been more delighted to try some of them.

83 www.ohlala-magazine.com

First to arrive at our table was a round of drinks. Cool, colourful and full of flavour, the virgin Berry Margarita, Passion Fruit Mojito, Xolotl (a concoction of orange, lime juice and passion fruit) and Enamora (a delicious mix of strawberry, blackberry and pineapple) had us refreshed and raring to go. The drinks were accompanied by bowls of warm and crisp tortilla chips with a mix of yellow corn and flour options served with a tasty salsa fresca that I kept returning to throughout the meal. We kicked-off lunch with four different kinds of ceviche – yes, you read that right. The first was a plate of Aguachile De Pulpo that included perfectly cooked octopus that was salty but slightly sweet and had a pleasingly tender bite, married with burned jalapeno, garlic oil, red onion, guajillo chilli and tomato juice. The second was a humble Ceviche De Camaron with cooked shrimp, habanero, lime, tomato and delicious diced mango, bringing a certain spark of flavour to every spoonful. The third was the stylishly plated Aguachile Lazaro served in a hollowed-out coconut shell in a mortar. The chopped-up pieces of succulent seabass were dressed in soy sauce and lemon juice. Like the others, it had the right balance of seafood, seasoning and mouth-watering citrus punch. But for the fourth, an unexpected option – Ceviche De Hongos, where mushrooms replaced the seafood. Prepared in a lime-based mixture of jalapeno, rosemary and thyme – the dish proved to be a spicy, bright and lovely surprise. The next appetiser was the elegantly presented Ensalada De Coliflor, a colourful mix of locally sourced cauliflowers served over a smooth, creamy puree of more cauliflower with crunchy pumpkin seeds. Then followed another first for many of us at the table, Chicharrón De Hongos, a selection of fine mushrooms deep fried to a crunchy texture and then marinated with soy and lemon juice and served on velvety rich guacamole with freshly prepared warm tortillas. This was an undeniable favourite at the table!

84 www.ohlala-magazine.com

CHIC Eats

While still salivating from the previous appetisers, our table was soon graced with a round of quick bites of street food dishes commonly found across Mexico. The first was the delicious Sopes Con Carne, a thick corn tortilla-like masa cake topped with black beans and savoury Wagyu short ribs, finished with tomatillo and sour cream. We also had a tasty mixture of melted cheese with pico de gallo, mushroom and morita chilli called Queso Fundido Con Champiñones. Then, closing out the appetisers came the Flautas De Pollos – tightly rolled deep-fried tacos with a cheesy chicken filling topped with sour cream and serrano chilli sauce. It offered that palate-pleasing crisp with a soft, chewy interior. We were then visited by the restaurant’s Chef de Cuisine, Cesar De Jesus Gil. He emphasised the use of local and fresh ingredients while including more options, even for the vegetarian section of the menu. Our conversation with him left us excited about the upcoming main courses. The first to arrive was the Enchiladas De Ribeye. Enchiladas are a traditional and popular Mexican dish that combines corn tortilla, meat, cheese and sauce. The flawlessly prepared ribeye meat melted in our mouths – this was a personal favourite of mine. We also tried the Enchiladas Vegetarianas, which sticks to the same winning formula but employs a medley of deliciously seasoned vegetables as the filling. This was followed by the Mole Con Vegetales, an intensely thick, rich and flavourful sauce (there are many versions of it throughout Mexico). We had one with a strongly pronounced chocolate flavour, tempered with spices and several other ingredients, setting the base for this eclectic dish topped with baby corn, zucchini, carrot and cherry tomatoes.

The final main course was the Pulpo Braseado. An octopus tentacle grilled to perfection and flavoured with bright and tangy guajillo chilli. Tender, succulent and delightfully meaty with a pinch of heat, it paired impeccably with the bed of buttery sweet corn.

As the curtains to this exquisite meal drew to a close, we indulged our sweet tooth. The Coco Flan was a velvety, rich, sweet custard topped with caramel sauce. Prepared using coconut milk and finished with whipped cream and a delicately flaky Buñuelos de Viento (crispy fritter), every bite was a voyage of textures and I kept returning for more. Then came the amazing Kahlo Cake, a toasted corn cake with a texture surprisingly similar to a date cake surrounded by a tempting vanilla sauce and topped with a luscious berry sorbet. And last was Pastel De Chocolate, a light, fluffy cake with a chocolatey molten centre, swirled meringue and a heavenly dollop of vanilla ice cream that divinely tied it all together.

Cantina Kahlo coloured in one of the most fascinating afternoons I’ve experienced in a while. We left the restaurant extremely satisfied and thoroughly impressed with the sensational food, the knowledgeable staff that took us on a journey to Mexico and the phenomenal atmosphere. The evenings are even livelier, with a Mariachi band serenading guests with regional Mexican music. It somehow manages to get better, which guarantees a return visit from me.

A PURE EXPRESSION OF MODERN LUXURY

THIS MONTH, OHLALA SPENT A DAY IN THE 2024 RANGE ROVER VELAR, AN EXCEPTIONAL VEHICLE OFFERING JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ONE COULD WANT FROM A PREMIUM SUV.

DIVA Drives

As connoisseurs of high-end motor vehicles, team OHLALA was delighted when offered the opportunity to test drive the new Range Rover Velar, compliments of the team at Euro Motors.

Not surprisingly, this recent offering from the famous British-born car manufacturer proved to be nothing less than sublime. Showcasing an inspiring new design, luxurious features, modern technology and trademark Range Rover refinement, few cars in the segment can hold a candle to this midsized luxury SUV.

EXTERIOR

The Range Rover Velar has pioneered the brand’s new reductive design philosophy, an approach that is evident in its updated form. It has not, however, taken away from the car’s impressive exterior makeup. The first features to demand our attention were the freshly designed front grille with a gunmetal metallic finish, the newly introduced Pixel LED Headlights and the jewel-like effect of Signature Daytime Running Lights. This flawless combination ensures a unified and confident front end that announces the arrival of this luxury SUV in ultimate style. We found the satin burnished copper accents on the front air intakes to add a unique touch to the exclusive feel of the vehicle.

From side on, the smooth and sporty exterior design is further highlighted by the slightly sloping roofline, clean body lines, flush door handles and available 22-inch high-performance wheels.

At the rear, we admired how the powerful overhang provides balance while accentuating the Velar’s considerable length. The pronounced kick enhances the muscular stance of the SUV, with the shapely lower bumper emphasising its near-perfect proportions – a feature complemented by cleanly designed hidden tailpipes. New LED taillights provide a further touch of class with their eye-catching 3D appearance and super-red illumination.

INTERIOR

Once inside the Velar, we were struck by the large amount of space on offer, the simple elegance of the design, along with the supportive and comfortable composition of the 20-way heated and cooled massage seats.

The interior of this luxury SUV echoes the reductive design approach of the exterior whilst providing both driver and passengers with everything they may require. We appreciated how the first-class environment of the cabin effortlessly showcases the outstanding craftsmanship capabilities of the brand.

“With luxurious features, modern technology, an inspiring new design and trademark Range
Rover refinement, few cars in the segment can hold a candle to this midsized luxury SUV.”

DIVA Drives

Our model housed the leather-free interior option, with a fresh seat design and new high-end materials featuring a modern diamond herringbone perforation pattern on the door panels, dashboard and centre console armrests.

We were informed that the 2024 Velar is offered in a range of internal colourways, all complemented by a curated choice of details, including Moonlight Chrome on the steering wheel, centre console surrounds and air vents. Technical Light Anodised, Dark Anodised Aluminium or tactile Shadow Grey Ash wood veneer trim finishes are available to further underline the vehicle’s elegance. These options allow owners to customise the interior to suit their tastes and style.

INFOTAINMENT & CONNECTIVITY

The reductive design approach applied to the new Velar is perhaps most effectively showcased by Range Rover’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment system. This updated version is operated through a single 11.4-inch floating curved glass interface that has been ergonomically positioned to minimise distractions and reflections.

We found this setup to be amongst the most efficient we have ever experienced. All the vehicle’s driving, comfort and convenience features are controlled through this single screen, with 80% of tasks able to be performed within two taps of the home screen. Voice AI capabilities in 24 languages along with wireless updates, further enhance the convenience of this impressive system.

Additional noteworthy internal features include connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, wireless device charging, wi-fi, Amazon Alexa, four-zone climate control, a Cabin Air Purification Plus system, Active Road Noise Cancellation technology, and an optional 17-speaker Meridian 3D Surround Sound System, amongst many others.

POWER, PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

The 2024 Velar is offered with a range of engine options. These include no less than four petrol versions, two diesels and an electric hybrid version. We were fortunate enough to test-drive the most potent petrol model, namely the P400. This 3.0-litre, six-cylinder mild-hybrid (MHEV) is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD) capabilities. This efficient combination generates up to 500Nm of torque at 2,000-5,000rpm, enabling the car to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 5.5 seconds.

As we made our way effortlessly around the country, we were spoilt by the trademark Range Rover ride comfort and refinement. This feature of the Velar is in large part due to the advanced chassis and optional Electronic Air Suspension included in this luxury SUV’s construction. An effective braking system and a full suite of driver assistance and safety features ensure this vehicle is amongst the safest and most dependable cars on the roads today.

For more information or to experience a test drive of your own, please call Euro Motors on 1746 0460.

Pumpkin Spice and EVERYTHING NICE

Miss Ohlala is excited about the new season and found a few facts related to it.

The first day of autumn this year will be September 23 for the Northern Hemisphere – countries south of the Equator will see the beginning of spring. In most countries, it means it is harvest time, and animals start preparing for the cold days ahead. In the Middle East, seasons are not really defined, and we basically have a lot of summer months and a few winter days. But that doesn’t mean we don’t love different seasons. We bring some snippets (and fun facts) about this time of the year that we barely see passing by as it looks a lot like summer, with days getting slightly shorter.

Autumn Equinox – This phenomenon happens every year in September, but the date varies; it usually falls between 21 and 23. The equinox is when the day and night have equal length. It lands on different dates because we follow the Gregorian calendar that counts only 365 days a year instead of the 365.25 days Earth actually takes to orbit the sun.

Babies Live Longer – According to a study by the Journal of Aging Research, those born in autumn could live longer. The

study found that 30% of US centenarians born between 1880 and 1895 were born in autumn. One of the theories for this is that the season marks the change in temperature, so babies develop a greater immunity to colds and flus.

Greek Explanation – According to Greek mythology, autumn began when Persephone, the daughter of the goddess of nature and harvest, was kidnapped by Hades, the God of the Underworld. Hades wanted her to be the queen of the underworld alongside him. However, she was so upset that she caused all the crops to die. When Hades returned Persephone to her mother, life began to creep back into plants, marking the start of spring.

The Lovely Smell – That brisk, crisp, slightly sharp smell we associate with autumn (mainly in European countries) is actually the smell of leaves, trees and plants dying and rotting. The pleasurable memories we associate with this change of season are linked with a not so happy reason.

Enjoy the new season!
