A Question of Well-being

We have so much going on this month and I’ve really loved putting the magazine together, particularly our cover story, which focuses on wellness and gave me the opportunity to chat to some great people in Qatar who are demonstrating the effectiveness of some of the therapies featured. Our WellBeing issue ties in with the announcement that Qatar is to host this year’s Global Wellness Summit later this year, which we’re very excited about. You’ll find details in the lead feature.

I also spoke to our beloved Faraway Martin, who’s decided to leave Qatar for the world stage. You can find out about his plans in the Listen Up section. And, still with entertainment, we got up close with Abood, TV and sports presenter, commentator, actor, voice specialist and probably one of the country’s most recognisable faces. My motoring colleague got behind the wheel of the latest Lotus, it was quite an experience. And we’ve got lots of news from Qatar’s automotive sector too. We caught up with some Michelin-starred chefs, who visited for a very special dinner and ventured across the city to try lots of great cuisine. Plus, this month’s foodie section features five whole pages of dining deals as more and more venues are putting on summer offers.

Our lucky publisher took a trip to Vienna, you can read all about her cultural experiences in our Travel section and, as always, we’ve got our usual roundups of news from the worlds of fashion, tech and events around town. Happy summer reading everyone and don’t forget the sunscreen.

LAUNCH OF A CULINARY INNOVATION

Beefbar, the carnivores’ paradise, is introducing a world-first new dining concept right here in Qatar.

Beefbar Asia, located in the same building as the largest Beefbar ever at Lusail City's South Marina Yacht Club, will offer a contemporary and flavourful take on popular Korean barbecues, combined with Beefbar's signature quality and expertise in Asian cuisine from Thai and Japanese to Chinese and Malaysian. Guests are invited to embark on the inaugural journey of Beefbar Asia, where Riccardo Giraudi, the visionary restaurateur, introduces an exquisite fusion of Asian flavours with the beloved Beefbar concept.

Drawing inspiration from the famous Korean Yakiniku barbecues, Beefbar Asia allows guests to select from a range of prime cuts, including Australian Black Angus or Wagyu, renowned Japanese beef. These carefully chosen cuts are then cooked on sizzlinghot barbecues placed right before diners’ eyes, creating an interactive and engaging experience.

In addition, Beefbar Asia proudly presents two private rooms, where guests can indulge in an exclusive dining experience with their own private chef. These rooms offer an intimate setting where visitors can relax and enjoy personalised culinary creations prepared by a skilled chef dedicated to their table. The new restaurant boasts interiors created in collaboration with designers Humbert & Poyet, that harmoniously blend materials, textures and intricate details in a stunning combination of brass, dark

wood, dark red marble and green tiles, adorned with sumptuous patterns, providing an elegant and luxurious atmosphere. The menu is described as cool, elegant and unique, showcasing an exceptional fusion of Asian flavours meticulously crafted by a talented team of chefs.

"We are thrilled to introduce Beefbar Asia to Qatar, where our guests can savour the flavours of Asia infused with our distinct Beefbar style," said Riccardo Giraudi, affectionately known as the Beefboy. "With a passion for hospitality and a dedication to reimagining restaurant concepts, we are excited to offer a unique dining experience that showcases our commitment to excellence, culinary innovation and the addition of private rooms with personal chefs."

Founded in 2005 in Monaco, Beefbar has evolved into a culinary destination that transcends beyond exceptional food. Each Beefbar location offers an immersive lifestyle experience, combining a relaxed atmosphere, stunning architecture, curated design, bespoke tableware, customised music, and now, for Qatar, the addition of private rooms with personal chefs. ✤

FAREWELL TO FARAWAY

One of Qatar’s favourite adopted sons, Irish teacher and singer-songwriter Faraway Martin, is heading out onto the big world stage, having made the decision to quit the day job and pursue music full time.

Describing himself as “excited but sometimes filled with existential dread”, the performer, who’s been a regular on the Qatar live-music scene since arriving in the country to teach music at GEMS American Academy in 2015, took to social media to announce his decision.

The 31-year-old, who got his name because he loves travelling and is always away from home is heading back to Ireland, temporarily, but says it will take some getting used to. He explained: “It was 47 degrees the day I landed in Doha – summer in Ireland gets to 25 degrees [max] so it took some time to adjust to the heat! Now, it’s going to take some time to get used to all the rain in Ireland!”

However, he won’t have to put up the rain for long with big plans for the future. “I plan to release lots of new music, travel around the world playing as many shows in as many places as I can and hopefully continue to play big stages around the world,” he says. He’s also hoping to release his debut album next year!

Of the fame he’s found in Qatar, where older students often turned up in the audience. He adds: “It’s crazy hearing your name being called from the stage. It’s even crazier when you’re at the mall or out and about! Just yesterday I got stopped for a selfie, something I’ll never get used to! I

have to say, the support the band and I get here in Doha is phenomenal. People have really gotten behind us. We have become a part of their social lives in Qatar and we always aim to deliver the best experience for anyone that comes along to see us play.”

Which has made this big decision even harder but, with a ‘no time like the present attitude’ the now-former school master says: “I love teaching and have had some of my proudest experiences in the classroom but my dream has always been to be on stage. It was very hard to walk away from a great job, teaching awesome kids but I’m not getting any younger! You regret the things you don’t do in life – so it just felt like it’s time to pursue music full time. I’m excited for what the future will bring!”

But, fans don’t need to be too downhearted as he promises he’ll back to Doha regularly to play shows and is hoping to return for the Formula One in October. ✤

NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR QATAR TALENTS

Qatar Foundation (QF) is collaborating with a world-renowned music school in a boost for young performers.

An agreement between QF and the Reina Sofía School of Music in Spain will include masterclasses and student exchanges, while pathways for graduates of Qatar Music Academy (QMA) – a member of QF – to join the higher education programmes offered by the Madrid-based school are being explored, together with use of its learning technology through virtual reality in QF’s schools. Reflecting the importance of promoting and expanding knowledge of Arab music and reinforcing the interconnectedness of Arab and Islamic culture on the one hand, and Spanish culture on the other, the agreement will also lead to the establishment of a Chair of Arabic and Eastern Music at the Spanish school, in conjunction with QMA. QF will support the expansion of the school and be granted naming rights for its building in the Spanish capital. Announcing the agreement in Madrid, Her Excellency

Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, said: “Music has the capacity to open windows to the world, and enhance pathways to knowledge – broadening our perspectives, and building bridges between cultures.

“At Qatar Foundation, we invest in, promote, provide access to, and educate our youth about music – and the wider world of arts – because it inspires creativity, curiosity and understanding. The opportunities we offer for increasing

the knowledge of, engagement with, and involvement in music among Qatar’s youth, and its wider community, will be significantly enhanced through this collaboration with the Reina Sofía School of Music.

“We are delighted to be working with an institution whose reputation for nurturing musical talent, artistic innovation and making the arts accessible to all is known around the world.”

Founded in 1991, the Reina Sofía School of Music supports the artistic and personal development of young musicians, collaborating with schools and institutions around the world with the goal of improving musical education on a global scale. With 150 students of more than 30 nationalities and 850 alumni, it is also committed to bringing music closer to society, through organising hundreds of free public concerts each year and offering social impact programmes in a range of fields.

The school also offers an entrepreneurship and social innovation programme, where students build their critical and creative skills through developing social, artistic, technological and environmental innovation projects. ✤

AIRLINE ACCOLADES

Qatar Airways scored multiple wins at the recent World Airline Awards run by Skytrax.

The Qatari flag carrier won the World's Best Business Class for the 10th time at the event held at the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace at the Paris Air Show. Al Mourjan Lounge at Hamad International Airport (HIA) triumphed in the World’s Best Business Class Lounge category as well as World’s Best Business Class Lounge Dining and Qatar Airways was honoured with the title of Best Airline in the Middle East for the 11th time in the history of the awards.

The awards were received by Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Akbar Al Baker and Chief Operating Officer of HIA, Eng. Badr Mohammed Al Meer. Mr Al Baker said: “Qatar Airways is delighted to win the World’s Best Business Class award at this year’s Skytrax World Airline Awards. This is testimony to the collective endeavour in the airline that enables us to deliver an unsurpassed customer experience. Three further awards illustrate Qatar Airways’ leadership in the sector, as well as its high degree of innovation and commitment.”

Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax said: "Qatar Airways is a very firm favourite amongst customers and winning these top awards in 2023 demonstrates that their Business Class, both onboard flights and in the

airports, stands out well above their competitors. Qatar Airways gained a very close second place finish in the overall global rating, ensuring that Qatar Airways again scooped the award as the Best Airline in the Middle East for 2023 for an 11th time."

The World Airline Awards are wholly independent and impartial, introduced in 1999 to provide a customer satisfaction study that was truly global. Travellers across the world vote in the largest airline passenger satisfaction survey to determine the award winners. The awards are referred to by media around the world as ‘the Oscars of the aviation industry’.

Airlines don’t pay to take part and more than 100 customer nationalities participated in the 2022/2023 survey with 20.23 million eligible entries counted in the results. Survey entries are screened to identify IP and user information, with all duplicate, suspect or ineligible entries deleted. More than 325 airlines are featured in the final award results. ✤

A VEHICLE WITH A DIFFERENCE

Mawaqif Qatar found a fun way to highlight sustainable transport by forming the largest electric vehicle icon ever made by humans.

Parking company QDVP PQSC (Mawaqif Qatar) proudly announced the milestone achievement which took place in a fun event at Barahat Msheireb in Msheireb Downtown Doha when members of the Mawaqif team came together to bring this iconic representation to life. It coincided with No Paper Day which aligns with the company’s deployment of ticketless parking solutions.

This activity was supported by Msheireb Properties, a like-minded organisation that shares the commitment to promoting sustainable practices and encouraging electric vehicle adoption.

Around 125 participants took in the endeavor bearing the shape of the icon above their heads and afterwards they were presented with an environmentally friendly gift that symbolised their pivotal role in shaping the present environmental and social landscape.

In a statement, Mawaqif Qatar said: “Today's generation is responsible for devising innovative solutions and adapting to a sustainable future. We can collectively create significant and lasting impacts by embracing even the most minor sustainable practices.

“Sustainability is a core pillar of Mawaqif Qatar and Msheireb

Properties. Both entities actively strive to safeguard our planet, combat climate change and foster social development, all while ensuring that no one is left behind. Msheireb Properties has spearheaded the development of Msheireb Downtown Doha, a smart and sustainable city district that stands as a testament to their dedication.”

Widespread adoption of electric vehicles across all categories has already resulted in the replacement of one million barrels of oil consumed worldwide each day. Moreover, electric car batteries recycle maximum environmental benefits, contributing to a sustainable future. The statement added: “Mawaqif Qatar, Msheireb Properties, and their partners remain committed to pushing sustainability boundaries and advocating for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles. By working hand in hand, we can create a greener and more prosperous future for all.” ✤

This vital conference attracts renowned wellness leaders from across the globe, facilitating powerful relationships, strategic investments and the exchange of game-changing business ideas. IT TAKES A VILLAGE

That’s a very common (and also very true) saying but these days, in our fast-paced world, it’s so easy to lose our connections to those around us. Where, in days gone by, problems would be discussed and solved within families and small, tightly-knit communities, nowadays, people often feel alone and that can lead to withdrawal, magnifying the initial issue. The need for community connection, both in-person and online is one of the trends that has emerged globally this year. In Qatar, this can be found in face-to-face groups such as AA, aaqatar.org, which helps with addition and has helplines for both women and men (a new resource), and online such as the Facebook page Menopause Support Group Qatar.

Sandee Thompson runs one such community resource. A WhatsApp group for breast cancer (BC) survivors which she set up after finding there was nothing else available for support locally. She says: “It’s a place for BC survivors to ask questions, share information, vent etc. We have newly-diagnosed women on the group and veterans like me. Some women join and are passive members – there but not actively participating. They need the information but don’t wish to engage. Others are more active and share their experiences when someone with a similar diagnosis joins. A lot of women don’t even live in Qatar but they need a support group of sorts.” Sandee also organises events and get togethers and runs the Doha Wireless Warriors (DWW), a dragon boat team. She adds: “The DWW started almost nine years ago after my second cancer event. I was trying to start a breast cancer group but it has turned into a cancer survivor/ supporter and community group.”

Sandee can be contacted on 5529 7518.

FOR ART’S SAKE

Art therapy originated in psychiatric hospitals in the 1940s and ‘50s. According to wellness-through-art.org

‘Shortly defined, art therapy means using artistic activities and products resulting from these activities, in order to enhance people’s wellbeing. Art therapy may help us to have a better view upon our inner conflicts and emotional deadlocks, and to understand what has to be done to deal with them.’ The discipline has never really gone away but, in recent years, it has experienced a surge in both popularity and accessibility.

Jaqui May-Brogden experienced art therapy in Qatar after admitting herself to rehab for addiction issues. She says: “So, I found myself in a very dark place and checked myself into a rehab facility here and I was an outpatient for a year. I graduated in December and one of the services I received was art therapy from which I am now an artist! I’m doing exhibitions, a school talk, designing and producing set work for The Doha Players drama group and taking commissions to do paintings for people. I am currently on an intense training programme to become a Recovery Coach and doing many courses on art therapy also.

“Art therapy is a way to express your feelings through painting. So many things can be seen in what goes onto the canvas. Painting saved me! And it continues to do so every day.”

WEAR IT WELL ONE FOR THE GIRLS

The year’s top fitness trend, according to the American College of Sports Medicine’s Health & Fitness Journal is something that should come as no surprise since it’s been at or near the top since it first appeared in 2016. Wearable technology, which includes fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors and tracking devices, have become more and more popular with each passing year and with each new innovation. From the basic, which can be used to count your steps and check your sleep, to the far more technologically advanced, such as those that also monitor the likes of body fat composition and blood pressure, these devices have never been more popular. And according to personal trainer, Nasir Amin, there are several reasons for this. He says: “I find that my clients like trackers because they give a good indication that the exercise they’re doing is actually having an effect. You might not see that your muscles are growing or the weight is coming off, but you will notice that your heart rate and blood pressure are lowering, which is something that can happen really quickly just by increasing an activity such as walking. However, I would caution against getting addicted – we’ve all heard the stories of people running up and down stairs just before midnight to get that day’s steps in and that’s just crazy.”

He recommends that wearable technology should be used to set and monitor sensible goals – but there’s definitely no harm in a little celebration when you beat your own steps.

Women’s fitness is nothing new but it is certainly something that is gaining traction in our part of the world with female athletes making headlines and more and more options opening up. In our city, Qatar Foundation (QF) is doing its bit and making use of an amazing venue which will bring memories of the FIFA World Cup.

QF’s Ladies’ Night has a new home for the summer, Education City Stadium hosted several matches during the world’s biggest international sporting event. And now it is becoming a hub dedicated to women’s and girls’ sport with special Ladies’ Nights. The first event took place in June and featured classes from health and fitness providers WarriorFit, Un1t, Wyld, Evo Active and V Lounge, as well as a football mini-tournament by the Paris SaintGermain Academy; stadium runs around the arena courtesy of Adidas Runners Doha, Run the World, and QTR Run Ladies; and Zumba sessions by QF’s team. There were also opportunities to find out more about QF’s full range of ladies-only sports classes. which operate year-round at Education City.

A Kids' Corner, housed in the players’ tunnel area and run by Toys 4 Joy, offered activities for children, as well as screenings –including QF’s edutainment TV series Siraj

And for those who just preferred to have a relaxing evening, Ladies’ Night at the Education City Stadium offered areas for people to unwind, chat and enjoy food and drink from the Torba Store and Pinkberry as well as browsing the Education City Gift Shop. Similar events are scheduled for July 19 and August 23.

Sleep’s important, right? Nobody would argue with that. In fact, if we could bottle the benefits of a good night’s sleep, we’d be millionaires. In fact, it’s estimated that up to 50% of adults suffer from short-term insomnia at some time in their lives and for 10% it’s a long-term problem. Lack of good-quality sleep affects every area of our well-being, from ability to concentrate to actual physical health – it’s linked to issues such as heart and kidney disease and more.

Sleep synching has emerged as a way to improve both quality and quantity of sleep by following our bodies’ own natural rhythms. On hearing the words circadian rhythm, you could be forgiven for thinking ‘sleep at sundown, rise at sunup’ which, though possibly desirable, would, for most of us, be simply unworkable. However, according to the unplugged.rest blog, it’s actually about ‘giving your internal clock a gentle nudge in the right direction. Basically, creating a routine that makes sure your body is sleeping and waking when it should be. Improved

sleep quality, increased energy levels and maintaining a healthy body have all been linked to sleep syncing.’

There are various ways to encourage good sleep and one we particularly like is listening to the solfeggio frequencies at bedtime. Particular sound patterns, including solfeggio frequencies, interact with your brain to generate vibrations in your body. The vibrations can have positive mental, emotional and physical effects, which may result in a state of calm, relaxation, stress relief, and even better sleep.

Our tester, MC Honey, says: “I’ve suffered insomnia and disturbed sleep for years, since my teens. It’s hard to believe but, from the first time I tried this, I slept straight through the night and have continued to do so. Friends have noticed that I’m much more upbeat and I can honestly say that I haven’t lost my temper, which used to be on a hair trigger, for months since I started.”

Please note, we said magical not magic. We’re talking about the healthy kind not the ones beloved on the hippy trail and known for their hallucinogenic properties. Right, now we’ve got that out of the way, a big trend this year is in ‘mushroom stacking’. What’s that, we hear you ask (as we did)? Whateveryourdose. com explains: ‘Mushroom stacking is in fact one of the latest buzzwords, referring to combining medicinal mushrooms with other adaptogens and antioxidants to enhance the benefits.’ The website explains that mushroom stacking means combining medicinal mushrooms with other adaptogens and antioxidants (we love those), such as Niacin and the functional mushroom Lion’s Mane. There is evidence to show that, when done properly, the practice can manage stress and anxiety and improve immunity, gut health, energy levels, sporting performance, focus, skin health, sleep and more.

So, how can we hop on this trend. Well, the easiest way seems to be through mushroom coffee which contains good quality coffee with the addition of powdered mushrooms. We haven’t found it in any of the local coffee shops so far – call to action for our beloved baristas – but you can order various blends on iherb.com and, if you give it a go, we’d love to hear what you think.

This trend is a big favourite in the FACT office because it involves something we’re already doing. Incidental exercise, according to Queensland Health, is any activity built up in small amounts over the day. For example, walking up the stairs or to the bus stop. To be fair, in our climate, the summer heat makes outdoor exercise difficult. But, when it’s just adding onto the things we’re already doing it becomes a lot more manageable. Get out of the lift one floor earlier, park a bit further from the office, walk on the golf course instead of taking a buggy and maybe even try doing your own gardening and household chores sometimes instead of having help every day. Our editor says: “I’ve been taking the stairs at work since January, it was a New Year’s resolution. I must admit that, at first, I struggled past the first couple of flights but now I go all the way up quickly. My legs definitely feel better for it and my breathing is easier – though I do still puff a bit at the top!” Get more ideas at health.qld.gov.au

FEEL THE FREEZE ON THE MOVE

We’ve heard plenty about cryo treatments in recent years, whereby the body is subjected to ultra-cold temperatures which are said to enhance healing and are much loved by athletes. But this year’s trend is a slightly gentler take on that philosophy – cold water therapy. According to Shondaland.com numerous studies have shown that cold water immersion can reduce inflammation, boost immune systems and ease bouts of depression. Not surprisingly, numerous spas are now offering cold water treatments alongside their more luxurious offerings and the same is being incorporated into massage and facial options to help tighten the skin. While in our summer, it is pretty much impossible to find naturally cool outdoor waters, many compounds and gyms have cooled pools, or you could make your own with a tub in the garden or by creating an ice bath in your own bathroom. And doing so is probably worth it. According to Everdayhealth. com exposing your body to cold water causes the blood vessels in submerged areas to narrow (known as vasoconstriction), which directs blood to your organs. Plus, water exerts pressure (known as hydrostatic pressure) on the body, which promotes blood flow to major organs like the heart, brain and lungs. When more blood moves toward your major organs, it’s able to gather more oxygen and nutrients. As soon as you emerge from the cold water, those same blood vessels expand (known as vasodilation) and when that happens, the oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood gets pumped back to your tissues, helping remove waste products, such as lactic acid, and lower inflammation.

After what feels like half a lifetime of pandemic-related travel restrictions, we’re all happy to be back on the move. But it seems we’re not content with just jetting off to the sun or packing our bags for a cultural city break. These days, more of us want vacations that not only offer relaxation but also well-being and even self-improvement which makes wellness travel one of the market’s fastest growing segments.

Wellness tourism is a concept that the US-based nonprofit Global Wellness Institute defines as travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing overall personal well-being. And there are more options to choose than one might think. From the everyday yoga retreats and scenic walking holidays to spa breaks, these can seem quite a gentle and enjoyable way to get healthy.

However, there are also more extreme styles of ‘wellness’ options to consider such as water fasting retreats, weightloss bootcamps and trips to learn martial arts or extreme sports. If you’re considering something of this nature, firstly make sure you are travelling with a reputable company –look for reviews. Carry out a thorough check of the facility you will be going to and ensure the instructors are fully qualified. And, most importantly of all, make sure you take out insurance specific to the activity in which you will be engaging – failure to do so could land you with a huge bill in the event of an unfortunate injury.

Micro workouts are another popular one. For many of us, the idea of committing to regular and time-consuming trips to the gym is a daunting prospect but, with this latest trend, you don’t have to. Micro workouts can be done any time, anywhere and can take as little as a few minutes during which you’ll build strength and flexibility. You can even perform exercises while you’re doing something else. Stack.com suggests: ‘… heating food in the microwave? Perform calf raises until the timer beeps. On hold with a call? Perform a wall sit. Fifteen minutes before your next Zoom meeting? Do a short circuit of lunges, push-ups and pull-ups. These brief workouts don’t seem like much, but the effects compound over time.’ Or, you could go for something more structured but still time efficient. Northwest Primary Care says: ‘Ten-minute workouts – or micro workouts – are perfect for people with packed schedules. It’s a style of exercise made up of full body micro workouts you can do in 10 minutes or less. You can start by doing speedy sets of push-ups, squats, planks and jumping jacks or you can alternate between short surges of sprinting with a walk if you wish to go outdoors.’

According to certified strength and conditioning specialist Lauren Stobbie in Women’s Health : “Science has shown that doing mini workouts throughout the day are just as effective as one long workout. You can gain muscle, boost your metabolism and lose weight.”

A SUPERIOR SPORTS CAR

FACT spent the day in the new Lotus Emira, a brand-new supercar hailed as the most accomplished Lotus ever created.

This month, thanks to the team at Lotus Regional, FACT got behind the wheel of Lotus’ all-new, mid-engine sports car, the Emira. As this was to be our very first Lotus test-drive experience, we were intrigued to discover what this iconic British manufacturer is producing in 2023.

Exterior

Instantly demanding our attention were the sculpted surfaces and technical detailing of this exotic-looking supercar. The Emira is the first sports car to carry the new design language originally showcased by the award-winning Lotus Evija hypercar. The inspiration provided by the Evija is obvious at the front end of the Emira, where the prominent leading edge of the bonnet draws the eye like a magnet to the current iteration of the iconic Lotus roundel – making its first appearance on a new Lotus sports car. The unique-in-class exit vents integrated into the bonnet are further evidence of the Evija’s influence, effortlessly guiding airflow over the body and optimising the aerodynamic nature of the vehicle. The standard wing-inspired vertical LED headlamps are yet another tip of the cap to the brand’s hypercar.

As we moved to the flanks, the influence of the Evija’s striking exterior design became even more apparent. Crisp feature lines and fluid surfaces complement the shrink-wrapped cabin that tapers toward the rear end. The sculpted sections cut into the

doors hint at the car’s performance capabilities and lead the airflow towards the intake ahead of the rear wheel. Vents cut into the muscular rear haunches, along with 20-inch wheels – specially developed for the Emira – further highlight its athletic prowess. At the back end, the integrated bumper is dominated by the Lotus wordmark that sits above an Evija inspired, body-coloured panel. On each side, a flat C-shaped LED light cluster linked by a slimline, high-level brake light adds a further touch of class to an already exceptional exterior design. As a final flourish, Lotus have included a black section housing twin exhaust pipes on either side of the number plate, along with an air diffuser situated underneath to assist downforce.

Interior

Designed to combine exceptional support for high-speed cornering with total comfort for long-distance journeys, we found the car’s two standard four-way electric adjustable seats to be nothing less than sublime.

Due to the dramatic supercar-like low stance of the Emira, you sit mere inches from the road surface. This unique driving position instantly imbues the driver with the feeling of being on the starting grid of a racetrack. This sense of speed and sportiness has been achieved while managing to match the best-in-class ingress/egress and headroom.

places the driver at the forefront of the Emira experience. We highly appreciated the pure ergonomic design, perfectly placed instruments and premium materials used throughout. Further notable interior features include a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel with metallic spoke detail and integrated controls, a wraparound dashboard that blends into the door trim, a raised gear shifter and ambient wraparound interior lighting. Aside from the surprising number of storage spaces throughout the cabin, luggage can be stored behind the two seats (208 litres), or in the 151-litre capacity boot to the rear of the engine.

Infotainment & Tech

The new Emira’s infotainment system is accessed through a 10.25-inch centrally mounted touchscreen and a 12.3-inch TFT driver’s display behind the steering wheel. We found this responsive display, with its clear images and graphics, to be user-friendly and extremely useful. Additionally, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both integrated as standard. The Emira also marks the first-ever automotive partnership between the highly respected British brand KEF and Lotus. KEF have supplied an exceptional 10-channel premium sound system featuring their signature Uni-Q technology.

Performance & Safety

The Emira has two engine options, a Lotus-engineered 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit from technical partner AMG and the beloved 3.5-litre V6 of our test model. Originally fitted in the Lotus Exige and Evora, this V6 is calibrated by Lotus. Coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, it delivered what we can only refer to as a vastly superior driving experience. Producing 400hp and 317Nm of torque, this mechanical monster can surge from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.2 seconds and deliver a top speed of around 290km/h! Besides the high-performance braking system of the Emira, the car boasts an extensive range of driver assistance and safety features. These include adaptive cruise control, launch control, rear parking sensors, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), an anti-collision system, fatigue alert, lane departure

warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, road sign information and a vehicle speed limiter.

Our Verdict

From its striking exterior and interior designs to its powerful on-road performance and high-end tech, it’s simple to see why the Emira is being labelled as the most accomplished Lotus ever created.

The GM of Fuwairit Kite Beach, Tapestry Collection By Hilton on career passion and an upcoming sporting tournament.

What first drew you to the hospitality sector and has it lived up to your expectations?

I joined this industry as a part-timer, while I was pursuing my higher education. It did not take long for me to fall in love with the industry. My passion for hospitality led it to become my professional career. I am delighted that I made this decision against all odds, and I firmly believe that I made the correct choice. Hospitality is a dynamic industry. Throughout my years, I have faced many challenges and, looking back, it has been an absolutely wonderful journey. I have travelled the world and worked across continents, met great personalities and gained a wealth of experience. After three decades, I am proud to be where I am in the hospitality industry – all thanks to the bold decision that I took, as my heart was meant for this industry.

Fuwairit Kite Beach (FKB) is Hilton’s first kitesurfing resort and the only Tapestry property in the Middle East. How does it differ from other properties you have managed?

Indeed, Fuwairit Kite Beach, Tapestry Collection by Hilton is a one-of-a-kind property. Hilton manages several iconic beach resorts around the world. However, this is the first property to be crowned with a kitesurfing experience to go with the worldrenowned Hilton hospitality. Qatar is expanding and properties like ours will definitely attract many tourists, who are keen on leisure sports like kitesurfing in the near future. The resort is uniquely adorned with decorative details and focuses heavily on environmental sustainability. We opened our doors in October 2022 to cater to the accommodation demand of the FIFA World Cup held in Qatar and in our first year of operation, we’ve faced challenges and successfully overcome all of them thanks to our great team. In my career, I have managed hotels and resorts

in cities and remote areas, however, I find it a privilege and an honour to manage Hilton’s first kitesurfing resort and the only Tapestry Collection by Hilton property in the Middle East.

How did you prepare to take over such a unique hotel in such a unique and beautiful setting?

Being in hospitality our first priority is to delight guests and ensure they have a great experience to reminisce on. I joined Fuwairit Kite Beach, Tapestry Collection by Hilton with the aim of taking it to greater heights and further developing the guest journey. As an experienced hospitality professional and a general manager, I am well acquainted with guest expectations and values. I have an amazing team on the property who are tirelessly striving for service excellence. Therefore, it did not require me to prepare for this to undertake this new position.

What’s coming up for guests in the future – are there any more tournaments or events planned?

Guests will be entertained with new food and beverage offerings as well as unforgettable experiences at the resort. With more winds coming in the winter season, the resort will be the host destination for the GKA Freestyle Kite World Cup Finals Qatar 2023, which is the biggest highlight of the year for Fuwairit Kite Beach, Tapestry Collection by Hilton. We are anticipating greater participation in the upcoming season.

Do you take part in any of the sports on offer at FKB and, if yes, which are your favourites?

I enjoy playing beach volleyball and padel with my team. Engaging in sports helps me to relieve stress, improve concentration and focus on my goals. I am yet to try kitesurfing, but I am hopeful of crossing it off of my bucket list during this summer. ✤

Here he shares with us how it started, how it’s going and what makes him tick.

Sugar & Spice is well-known on the Qatar café landscape and has won multiple awards. How did you originally come up with the idea and why do you believe it has been so successful?

Ten years ago, I was searching for a nice carrot cake here in Qatar, but I couldn’t find one that was delectable for me. Using the baking skills that I inherited from my mother, I created my signature recipe of carrot cake and came up with the idea to share it with everyone who has a sweet tooth, and that’s when Sugar & Spice was born. It has been successful as our customers feel at home with the food we serve, for them it is their comfort food. (Sugar & Spice now has three branches around Doha.)

You opened The Coffee Room in Beirut in 2019 and Apple Butter in London’s Covent Garden, in 2020. Each of your venues brings quirky interiors and interesting menus – how do you go about planning both your décor and food offerings?

We, as a team, work on the concept. Everything starts from a storyline and the interiors are based on it, too. From our menu down to how we present our staff with their uniforms, all are well-coordinated and in sync with our own story.

Your restaurant Nisrine, in Qatar, is an homage to the glory days of your Lebanese homeland. Please share some of your own memories with us and explain how Lebanon influences your current career path.

For me, Lebanon is an inspiration itself. From high ceilings to beautiful floorings, breathtaking arches, surrounded by blossoming flowers, everything incites me. As I walk the streets of Lebanon, I feel the warmth of a story, this is Lebanon’s unique architecture.

Aside from your undoubted success as a restaurateur, you are also a well-known social media personality with a substantial following on Instagram. How long have you been active in this sphere and how did you get started?

I started eight years ago as I wanted to show people the background of hard work. I wanted them to manifest the A to Z of how I got here. People got interested as they saw the inside out through-and-through of my day-to-day life, from fashion to interiors, being a foodie and restaurateur. Social media intrigues and fascinates me, so I find it very engaging.

Is there a secret about yourself you can share with our readers – an unknown talent or ambition, maybe?

I compete with myself. My ambition changes everyday as I get bored doing repetitive things. Out-of-the-box, that’s my ignition! ✤

HAVING FUN WITH FOOD

• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN
Vito Fornelli, Executive Chef at Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach tells us about his own food culture and new offerings.

You’ve mentioned being inspired by your grandmother’s cooking with ingredients ‘from the backyard’, is this a concept you would like to introduce at the Wyndham Grand? Indeed. I grew up eating food made from fresh ingredients, those that were readily available in the village. From olive oil to cheese and produce, you name it. So, naturally, I’m inclined to incorporate this food culture at Wyndham Grand Doha West Bay Beach. Locally sourced ingredients take centre stage in our kitchen, and we believe in bringing the genuine taste out of each ingredient used to give a wholesome dining experience to all our guests.

Your kitchen philosophy is to keep it simple and have fun with it – how do you manifest this in your current role while overseeing the hotel’s various outlets?

When you think of a comfort food, most of us will choose the simplest dish. However, the food industry metamorphoses every minute, there is always something new, innovative, and interesting emerging. Hence, it’s important we ride along the tide, and have fun while doing it. You will see these elements in all our menus, simple yet fun.

You’ve recently launched new promotions the Superfood Business Lunch and Afternoon High Coffee. Please tell us about these.

Oh, I’m very excited to tell everyone about this. Standing true to our food philosophy we have launched our Superfood

Business Lunch at bāzār West Bay – our all-day dining restaurant. The ingredients used in curating the business lunch are all superfoods, aimed at keeping you fuelled and energised after the lunch, and not feeling lethargic. Some of the menu items include Brown Rice Salmon Poke Bowl, Seared Tofu Steak and Chocomole Pudding (avocado and dark chocolate).

We have also launched a unique concept at Crema Brew Bar. We all have heard enough and more about High Teas, so we wanted to be the first in Doha to introduce, Afternoon High Coffee. The concept stems from our passion for all things coffee. The High Coffee consists of coffee-based sweets and savouries, and guests can enjoy this with our special list of hot or cold coffees, all brewed from single-origin artisanal coffees from around the globe. The High Coffee Cage is wheeled to the guests in the opulent and breathtakingly beautiful lobby, can’t get better than this, right?

What is your own signature dish and what makes it special?

I don’t like to restrict my signature dish to just one. The world is your oyster, so why limit yourself to just to one?

I’m an Italian, so it goes without saying I love making pasta, pizza and fish. However, I also enjoy making Indian and Far-East Asian foods. The melody of spices, herbs and vegetables is incredible. ✤

AN UNFORGETTABLE DINING EXPERIENCE

Laura Morris was transported to a world of refined elegance during an evening at Il Galante at Banyan Tree Doha.

Il Galante, a high-class Italian restaurant named after the famous book written by the esteemed chef Vincenzo Corrado, invites you to embark on a gastronomic adventure like no other. With its elegant ambience, refined flavours and a touch of literary charm, this establishment promises an enchanting experience that transcends the boundaries of traditional dining. The cookbook, Il Cuoco Galante, was the first to showcase Mediterranean cuisine and celebrate the excellence of regional Italian food. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by an atmosphere of refined elegance and sophistication. The design concept revolves around capturing the essence of the city through thoughtful elements that elevate the dining experience. Reflective surfaces tastefully adorn the interior, strategically placed to amplify the captivating views that unfold before your eyes. Expansive floor-toceiling windows invite natural light to flood the space, illuminating the surroundings and enhancing the breathtaking panorama. Plush, comfortable chairs upholstered in rich fabrics offer a perfect balance of opulence and relaxation. Each seat is thoughtfully positioned to ensure unobstructed views, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of the city while enjoying their meal. Soft shades of cream, taupe and dove grey dominate the space, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. These elegant colours act as a backdrop, allowing the cityscape to take centre stage. If you are looking for somewhere to watch day turn into night, while enjoying some authentic Italian cuisine, this is just the place!

As twilight painted the sky in hues of amber and indigo, our journey into the realm of refined flavours commenced at Il Galante, where Head Chef Rosario Cavallaro welcomed us with a warm and knowledgeable embrace. The pages of the menu unfolded as he delighted in sharing his personal recommendations, each dish a testament to his culinary prowess. It became evident that his pride extended beyond the mere ingredients; his expertise encompassed the origins and traditions that enveloped every plate. With anticipation in the air, we embarked on a culinary voyage where artistry met heritage, forging an experience that would linger on our palates and in our hearts.

First to arrive at the table was the Panzanella di Gambero. Impeccably presented, this elegant display tantalised both our eyes and our taste buds. This traditional Tuscan dish has been elevated to new heights as cold, tender prawns gracefully mingle with vibrant chunks of bread, soaked in the essence of sun-ripened tomatoes, fragrant basil and zesty vinaigrette. With each bite, the succulent flavours and contrasting textures create a remarkable culinary experience that lingers.

Next came the La Camerelle salad. This dish showcases a stunning combination of fresh ingredients that epitomise elegance and taste. A feast for the eyes and the palate, with a delightful blend of flavours and textures, it is meticulously presented with vibrant baby gem lettuce forming a lush green base. Peppery rocket leaves add a pleasant bite, while halved cherry tomatoes offer bursts of tanginess. Small, creamy pearls of mozzarella provide richness, and fragrant basil leaves add freshness to the dish. A pinch of oregano adds a subtle Mediterranean hint and the combination of textures is remarkable.

Il Carpaccio Wagyu is a dish that harmoniously combines the finest ingredients in a symphony of flavours and textures. Thin, velvety slices of Wagyu beef, delicately marbled and expertly cured, taste delicious! Nestled atop are curls of parmesan shavings, their sharp and nutty profile adding depth and complexity. Caramelised figs, plump and luscious, are strategically placed with artistic precision. Their natural sweetness intertwines with a gentle caramelised note, providing a subtle contrast and a touch of fruity indulgence that harmonises with the richness of the Wagyu. A scattering of toasted pine nuts brings a delicate crunch to each bite, elevating the dish with an earthy and buttery essence.

Chef Cavallaro wheels in a trolley adorned with all of the ingredients ready to prepare us a fresh Parthenope (which resembles a deep-fried calzone pizza). This dish pays homage to its birthplace, Naples, where it was once a humble street food delight. Golden and crisp, the outer dough envelops a symphony of flavours, the filling bursting with a harmonious blend of creamy ricotta and mozzarella. The tomato sauce adds a vibrant tang, perfectly complementing the succulent beef salami and savoury turkey ham which ooze out as you tuck into each slice. Fragrant basil leaves lend their herbal notes, infusing an enticing freshness and keeping us going back for more!

Risotto Cacio Pepe e Gamberi combines creamy risotto with searing prawns. The velvety risotto boasts flavours of sharp cacio cheese and a touch of black pepper. The seared prawns add a succulent and charred sweetness. Each bite offers a delightful symphony of textures and tastes, a celebration of simplicity and quality ingredients. Prepare to be captivated by this luxurious dish, where every spoonful transports you to a world of refined indulgence.

How could we eat at such an authentically Italian restaurant without sampling some pasta? Another dish steeped in history, the Paccheri alla Genovese con la Fonduta di Pecorino, in short this comprised thick strips of soft pasta topped with a slow-cooked Wagyu beef and onion medley: a rich and hearty plate. The story behind this dish is the way in which the pasta was once made and left to dry in the sun. Additionally, we sampled a combination of main courses, including some of the most succulent beef tenderloin I’ve had in a long time. The menu comprises such a vast selection, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Fit to burst but unwilling to leave without trying at least some of the desserts from the tempting selection, we opted firstly for the Truffle Tiramisu. I’m glad we did, as not only did it look spectacular, it tasted as if I’d stepped into Italy! Atop the creamy layers of mascarpone and espresso-soaked ladyfingers sits a cocoa-dusted ‘truffle’ as a centrepiece. Jewelled with raspberries and mini Italian meringues, this dessert is a visual spectacle. Each bite reveals a fusion of flavours, with the cocoa, mascarpone and espresso intertwining. The contrasting textures of softness and subtle crunch create a delightful indulgence. The Lemon Semifreddo was also delightful, refreshing and beautiful. When you visit Il Galante which, if you haven’t, you must, prepare to be transported to a world where each element is thoughtfully composed to create an unforgettable dining experience. ✤ GO: CALL 4410 3310 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE A RESERVATION.

A FEAST FOR SHARING

• ON THE MENU
Hannah Nesbitt headed to El Faro to check out their selection of delectable tapas sharing plates.

Located in the prestigious surroundings of Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl - Doha, El Faro offers an immersive experience, taking you on a journey through the vibrant flavours of Hispanic cuisine. This renowned tapas bar is the perfect destination to indulge in an array of tantalising treats meticulously designed to showcase the rich and diverse flavours of the region. The delicatessen counter is the newest addition to the restaurant, where diners are able to select their own cuts of thinly sliced cured meats and traditional Spanish cheeses to be consumed at one’s own leisure within the restaurant or to take away, this concept captures the essence of authentic Spanish cuisine. There are options for both indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor terrace offering views across the turquoise sea whilst the warm sun gently sets, allowing you to transport your senses and imagine you are dining at an Argentinian seaside resort. And the indoor seating enjoys bright and colourful sights and sounds, reflecting the vibrant culture and spirit of Latin America. The lighting and Spanish music set the scene for the food to follow. The first dish made its entrance in a traditional terracotta pot; inside, a Latin American favourite, ceviche. A small, delicate stack of fresh, white snapper marinated in citrus flavours and crowned with avocado and a sprig of aromatic coriander. A side of crispy plantain chips provided the combination of crunch with the smooth, tasty fish, which made for a light and refreshing starter. The tapas culture has long been regarded as a communal, family-style way of eating, with small dishes of meats, fish and cheeses shared by friends. Whilst sitting at the oversized carved tree trunk table, we were surprised when the vast spread of

tapas offerings took over the space. With each dish that was laid out and the detailed description of the ingredients used, the eyes and taste buds alike were eager to begin enjoying the flavourful savouries. Bowls, baskets and boards adorning the table were filled with so much food, suitable for sharing, dipping and savouring each bite.

Two of the standout favourites from the tapas spread were the calamari, with a light, yet crispy batter, coating the tender rings of seafood, and the grilled shishito peppers and raspberry vinaigrette. The surprisingly sweet peppers gave off a mild heat and combined well with the fruitiness of the vinaigrette. The yellow Peruvian chilli dip was a great accompanying dipping sauce for many of the dishes, such as the croquettes. With three varieties available (cheese, short rib and mushroom), there is sure to be one to suit your palate.

For those who favour meat dishes, we tried two tantalising options: the chicken Pintxo and beef Anticuchos, delicious skewers, best enjoyed sizzling hot, with flame-grilled flavours and charred edges, topped with fiery red chillies. The chicken thigh had been selected specifically for this dish as it is regarded to be the most tender cut and was further enhanced by its 24hour marinating process.

A tapas bar favourite was the true show-stopper, the culinary cousin of the traditional Spanish Paella, the striking Arroz Negro.

The black squid ink contrasting with the white of fragrant garlic aioli was further enhanced by the dramatic langoustine, juicy king prawns and shell-on mussels.

Desserts were a showcase of Latin American classics, served as a trio of cheesecake, churros and Tres Leche cake, each with its own varied flavours and textures. No Latin feast would be complete without the sugary, cinnamon goodness of a bowl of churros. The bitesize doughnut-shaped treats were cooked to perfection, with a golden crispy exterior and a light, fluffy interior, just the right size for dunking into a velvety bowl of rich chocolate sauce. The Tres Leche or ‘three milk cake’ was both rich and creamy, topped with a fluffy, swirled meringue. Giving the baked cheesecake an elevated, Spanish twist was the freshly grated Manchego cheese (straight from the deli counter), lovingly sprinkled on top. This gave a great combination of sweet and savoury.

The bright and vibrant flavours of the dishes, paired with the friendliness of the staff, made for a truly adventurous journey through a range of classics. ✤

A VIBRANT NEW EATERY

Hannah Nesbitt discovered knowledgeable staff and flavourful food in great surroundings at La Mesa.

La Mesa is an Argentinian grill with Latin American sharing dishes which is a recent addition to Doha's dining scene and has made its mark in the trendy Mina District of Old Doha Port. This vibrant location has quickly become a must-visit destination, offering a variety of cuisines and culture throughout the area. The colourful buildings and incredible ocean views at sunset make for the ideal backdrop for witnessing the shifting hues of the sky as dusk sets in and the twinkling lights of the night captivate the scene.

As you wander along the board walk, you will find La Mesa, conveniently located on the water’s edge. An outdoor terrace is available for the cooler months, alternatively you can step through the grand, ornate wooden doors, to a rustic haven of dark woods, terracotta and exposed brickwork. The vast restaurant space enables diners to observe the picturesque outdoor views or, for a different experience, they can observe the culinary artistry of the chef through the open kitchen.

After settling into our seats, the skilled mocktail mixologist arrived at the table to prepare drinks of our choice, using the freshest ingredients. For out first tipple we opted for the Terra Patagonia –a delightful fusion of strawberry, watermelon, basil and rosemary syrup perfectly balanced with citrus Seedlip. Each drink was lovingly garnished with a sprig of rosemary and quirky branded citrus peel. Shaken and served over ice, it was a refreshing and sweet combination.

Appetisers included a hot crusty loaf of bread, fresh from the oven, piping with steam as we tore it open. Rich, plump, juicy olives and an herb-infused butter were served alongside.

Shortly after, a trolley arrived at our table to prepare the guacamole. The knowledgeable Guadalupe guided us through the preparation process as she created the dish in a molcajete (a traditional stone dish, similar to a pestle and mortar). The avocado was mashed to a smooth, creamy consistency and enhanced with fresh green chillis and pico de gallo. The simple yet iconic dish was completed with fresh, crispy tortilla chips. Hot appetisers included a beef empanada and rib eye tacos. The thinly sliced meat, wedge of chunky avocado and sprinkling of mozzarella, were elevated by the salsa verde and squeeze of lime. The garnish of sliced radish and coriander added both colour and further contrasting flavours.

To round off our appetisers we indulged in a chilled ceviche classico, made with hammour marinated in leche de tigre and choclo, a Peruvian corn, adding a crunchy contrast to the smooth texture of the fish.

Arriving in a spectacular sizzling manner on a skillet plate was our first main course of tenderloin fajitas. True to their Mexican roots, the fajitas were served with flour tortillas and sour cream, guacamole and salsa. The meat was tender and juicy and the seasoning just perfect.

Our T-bone steak was cooked as requested to a medium temperature, showcasing its blackened, flame grilled markings and served in all its simple glory with a tasteful touch of lemon garnish. The impressive steak knives, boasting leather blade cover, effortlessly sliced through the tender meat, its juices running impressively, a good indication of the quality and expertise of the chefs.

Our second drink was a captivating smoky spectacle, artfully presented in a swirling glass smoke chamber, the Brasa Brasa, infused with aromatic scents of rosemary, the juices included plum, strawberry and cranberry. As beautifully and intricately decorated as the previous, with the addition of thinly sliced plum, carefully affixed to the side of the glass with a miniature wooden peg, attention to every small detail in the presentation was evident and added to the overall enjoyment of the evening. The dessert was for me the most mind-boggling experience. Delivered to the table on a large wooden serving board was what appeared to be a wheel of brie cheese. Our astonishment peaked when we were told that it was in fact, a cheesecake. The complexity of the sugar coating gave the very deceiving appearance and texture of genuine cheese rind. When cut open, the wonderfully sweet and creamy texture left our minds completely sure, this was indeed not brie! Black speckles of vanilla pods ran throughout adding their delicate flavour. To complete the appearance of a cheeseboard, pecan nuts, grapes and cranberries adorned the board.

We enjoyed an excellent evening at La Mesa. The friendly staff and fine attention to detail in all areas of the presentation and flavours of the food, made for a truly outstanding experience. A top-quality restaurant in a ‘must visit’ location. ✤

AN EXTRAORDINARY MICHELIN-STARRED EXPERIENCE

Alongside its London eateries at Hanway Place and Mayfair, which have held the coveted stars for 20 and 12 years respectively, having both been awarded the accolade within a year of opening, 2022 saw Hakkasan Abu Dhabi and Hakkasan Dubai receiving one star each in the MICHELIN Guide’s debut in both markets. Established in 2001 in London, Hakkasan now has multiple restaurants located around the world throughout the United States, Middle East, Asia and Europe. The menu is a modern interpretation of authentic Cantonese cuisine, using the finest ingredients and expert traditional techniques to create timeless yet innovative signature dishes such as the Grilled Chilean Seabass and Crispy Duck Salad. The atmosphere is vibrant, intriguing and inviting making these authentic Chinese restaurants firm favourites from Las Vegas to Bodrum and Mumbai.

To mark this special Middle Eastern achievement a first-ofits-kind dinner series featuring the top chefs from each of the Michelin-starred restaurants was held in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha – giving diners the chance to experience the best of the best from Hakkasan with signature dishes from each culinary master.

Oversight was provided by Executive Chef Andrew Yeo from Tao Group Hospitality’s London culinary team and pastry direction by Chef Romain Cornu, Global Corporate Pastry Chef, Tao Group Hospitality. We caught up with the four chefs to learn more about their dishes and their inspirations.

Hakkasan Doha was among the select regional restaurants to host a special Executive Chef Dinner to celebrate the group achieving Michelin-star status for the first time in the Middle East.

CHEF MICHAEL ZHEN – HEAD CHEF, HAKKASAN MAYFAIR, LONDON

Hakkasan is known for its ability to make the ordinary extraordinary, something that was instrumental in your restaurant winning the brand’s first Michelin star within a year of its opening. How do you go about turning staple dishes into superstars?

Hakkasan is known for having cinematic energy and when creating some of our dishes we include this excitement and visual storytelling.

We use our traditional Chinese cooking methods, combining fresh and seasonal ingredients to create our dishes. Then plate with innovation, presenting our creativity, giving our guests the wow factor across all senses.

CHEF ANDY TOH – EXECUTIVE CHEF, HAKKASAN DUBAI

You went from sous chef to Executive Chef of Hakkasan Dubai in the space of five years. Did you always have very high ambitions for your career and are you surprised by how much you have achieved so quickly?

Each individual has their own aspirations for their future career. In my case, my desire to become a chef was sparked by my mother's cooking and the hawker food stalls in my hometown of Penang, where my parents took me for dinner. As I watched the chef cook with flames leaping high from the wok, I thought to myself, ‘Wow! That's so cool. I want to be like him’.

I have been working for Tao Group Hospitality for nearly 12 years, and I believe that my accomplishments in this organisation are a result of my dedication, enthusiasm and trust in my employer and colleagues.

CHEF ANDREW LEE – EXECUTIVE CHEF, HAKKASAN ABU DHABI

Having been with Hakkasan Abu Dhabi since its launch in June 2010, you must be incredibly proud of this achievement. What do you believe makes this venue special and deserving of the Michelin star?

To begin with, I express my gratitude to the company that provided me with the chance to join the pre-opening team of Hakkasan Abu Dhabi. Receiving a Michelin star is the pinnacle of my career, and it would not have been possible without the support of my team, who have always backed my concepts and plans for developing new menus. I extend my gratitude and appreciation to all our guests who have consistently supported and trusted us over the years. We strive to progress further, with more originality and inventiveness, to guarantee our guests' contentment.

CHEF KEITH LIM – HEAD CHEF, HAKKASAN HANWAY PLACE, LONDON

How do you incorporate a taste of London into your quintessentially Chinese dishes?

London is one of the most diverse cities in the world, it inspires me to infuse diversity into my culinary creations. I like to reflect such diversity into my dishes through combining flavours derived from the freshest ingredients, sourced locally and sustainably where possible, from the UK and Europe, while preserving the exquisite cooking techniques and styles of Cantonese cuisine.

A GORGEOUS GETAWAY WITHOUT LEAVING TOWN

Carolyn Sidgwick discovered a new appreciation for a long-time favourite when she checked in to the InterContinental Doha

Beach & Spa.
STAYCATION •

This hotel has always been one of my favourites with the unique food and beverage offerings being some of my top Qatar destinations, but I have never stayed there, so I was very excited to experience this staycation.

The excitement always starts from the moment you hit the lavish driveway. No sooner have you stopped your car than your door is opened with a warm and friendly smile. This is one of the best hotels for the sincerity of the staff and genuine care each team member has, no matter where you are within the extensive property.

At reception, I was welcomed graciously and offered the option to check in straight away or in the Club Lounge where I could relax and have a drink at the same time. I actually had a meeting in the Belgian Café, so decided to go for the latter option. The Club Lounge is one of the unique experiences I so love about all the InterContinental hotels as it provides Club guests with an all-inclusive, luxury, personal service at exceptional value for money. It’s a fantastic space, whether you have business to conduct or just want to chill.

The first wow had to be the view from our room, a breathtaking vista of Doha and the extensive hotel grounds with the choice of pool and bar areas. My excitement grew deciding what we would do first! The welcoming amenities, including Byredo toiletries (refillable to meet IHG's sustainability goals), were a much appreciated touch along with the very impressive choice of pillows available. That

night, I nestled in the soft, high-quality linens and I can’t remember the last time I slept so well and for as long as I did! Sheer paradise.

Our first dining experience was at Mykonos, renowned for its authentic offering of fresh Greek cuisine. This has to be one of my favourite unique spots to savour Mediterranean delights. We had the privilege of meeting Alexandros, Chef de Cuisine of Mykonos. We chose the Grilled Seabass and Lamb Chops which were all cooked to perfection. Their Sangria has to be some of the best in Doha and is always on my must haves when I visit. Not usually ones for dessert, we tried the traditional Milk Pie and the Orange Sponge Cake which was so good that we didn’t leave any sign we had ordered it other than a very clean plate! The icing on the cake had to be the Greek tradition of plate smashing which we were recommended to stay for and it was amazing seeing everyone laughing and enjoying the satisfaction of crashing plates on the floor while the Bouzouki band played traditional music. I have to say, The whole experience took my breath away as I watched and joined in with the fun. With no recollection of falling asleep as soon as my head sunk into the luxurious feather pillow, we woke the next morning to our fabulous view and made our way to the Club Lounge for breakfast. We were greeted with a wonderful display of everything you can imagine to whet

your appetite and selected eggs which were cooked to our preference and made the start to our day feel like a blessing. One of my all-time top spots in Doha, and one I always recommend to friends, is La Mar. So, I was very curious to check out the new La Mar Beach Club. Wow! It really didn’t disappoint and just reminded me why I love it there so much. The service was fantastic and the vibe amazing whilst we chilled and enjoyed beautiful mixed drinks. We were so impressed by the complimentary French bubbly trolley that went round for everyone and the mouthwatering mango lolly pops that were bursting with flavour. I didn’t really want to leave but had a massage booked. As I arrived at Spa InterContinental, I was quickly swept off my feet with the serene experience of the most amazing bespoke massage I think I have ever had – I’ve been floating ever since. I was particularly impressed with the massage bed and the amazing journey therapist Tinni took me through with her magical treatment. The spa is such a haven of bliss that you can very easily get lost in the tranquillity as you rest your busy mind.

After getting ready for dinner, we headed to Novecento, the tantalising Italian/French restaurant. We chose to sit on the terrace, which is stunning, while looking out over the beautiful architecture of the hotel and the beach and pool. We started with the Quinoa & Kale Salad and Seared Foie Gras. Both were full of flavour and set us up well for

the Steak Frites and Slow Braised Angus Short Ribs which melted in our mouths with every bite.

On our last day we decided to experience the delights Coral had for breakfast, which proved to be a huge and awesome array of food offering something for every palate. Afterwards we went to enjoy the pool and pool bar where the staff came round to ensure everyone had water. It was impressive to see the army of lifeguards arrive to take over from their colleagues, making sure everyone was safe. We didn’t see many children but that was probably because they were enjoying the indoor play area.

It was so wonderful to experience and see the InterContinental Doha Beach & Spa from another perspective. It was, without doubt, a fantastic staycation and I highly recommend this hotel with its impressive choice of 14 restaurants and bars that recently won three awards in the Fact Dining Awards Qatar 2023. La Mar Doha by Gastón Acurio took home the biggest win of Best Overall Restaurant in Qatar, La Mar Beach won Best Poolside and Novecento was Best Dessert Parlour, I can see why! So, with no question, this has to be one of the top staycations for quality, luxury, choice and value for money. ✤

A JOURNEY INTO CULTURE

Chirine Halabi headed to Vienna for a stay immersed in history, art and more.

Iadore the cultural side of Qatar, especially our many museums and galleries, so when an invitation came to visit Vienna, home of some of Europe’s finest collections, I jumped at the chance.

I was delighted to be staying at The Leo Grand Hotel Vienna which enjoys a privileged location in the heart of the city, providing guests with convenient access to Vienna's most prominent landmarks and attractions. Situated within close proximity to the renowned Stephenplatz, this exquisite hotel is surrounded by a vibrant array of shopping arcades, fine dining establishments and cultural gems. This storied hotel holds a rich historical past, tracing its origins back to the grandeur of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Initially established as a luxurious palace in the 19th century, The Leo Grand has stood witness to Vienna's shifting cultural landscape. Over the years, it has been meticulously renovated, preserving its timeless elegance while incorporating modern amenities to cater to the needs of discerning guests.

Design, Technology and Luxury

Stepping inside The Leo Grand Hotel Vienna, guests are immediately struck by its opulent design and attention to detail. The interior seamlessly blends classic elements with cutting-edge technology, creating a truly remarkable ambience. The fusion of exquisite furnishings and intelligent lighting systems adds a touch of modernity to the timeless elegance of the property.

The Patio Deluxe room I enjoyed offers a sanctuary of comfort and luxury. The carefully curated furniture and décor exude sophistication and refinement. Guests can indulge in the convenience of controlling lights, temperature

and even the television through the tablet provided in each room. I found the system easy to operate and this seamless integration of technology into the hotel's design ensures guests can enjoy a personalised and comfortable stay. The hotel’s commitment to guest satisfaction extends to the smallest details, such as the distinctive blue towels and deep bathtubs. The luxurious bathrooms offer a haven of relaxation, inviting guests to unwind in the comfort of their elegantly designed private sanctuaries. And there is a range of accommodation types available including Grand Deluxe rooms and suites such as the truly majestic, two-floor Leopold Suite.

Food Glorious Food

DOTS at The Leo Grand, is the gorgeous restaurant found in the Baroque inner courtyard, a hot spot in the city centre offering avant-garde fusion cuisine accompanied by relaxed tunes in a wonderful location.

The hotel prides itself on providing an exceptional culinary experience and I was very happy to start with its delectable breakfast menu. Guests are treated to a wide array of fresh and locally-sourced delicacies, catering to various dietary preferences and ensuring a delightful start to the day. I took full advantage of a hearty early feast, perfect to set me up for a day of cultural exploration.

Vienna, the enchanting capital of Austria, is a treasure trove of art and culture, boasting a myriad of world-class museums. Within close proximity to The Leo Grand Hotel, visitors have the opportunity to explore the rich artistic heritage of the city. While strolling from the hotel to

these museums, one can also indulge in delightful dining experiences and indulge in some retail therapy, enhancing the overall Viennese experience.

The Belvedere is a magnificent palace complex that houses two prominent museums: the Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere. The upper is renowned for its impressive collection of Austrian art, including the iconic masterpiece ‘The Kiss’ by Gustav Klimt, my favourite painting of all time. This museum showcases a wide range of artworks ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. Just a short walk from the Leo Grand, visitors can enjoy the picturesque views of the palace gardens. Along the way, you will pass charming cafés and restaurants, offering the ideal opportunity to savour the world-famous Viennese delicacies or enjoy a cup of coffee.

A stone's throw away from the Belvedere is the Albertina Museum, home to one of the most important graphic art collections in the world. Visitors can immerse themselves in the works of renowned artists such as Dürer, Monet, Picasso and many more. Easily accessible on foot from the hotel, as you traverse the streets, you can explore fashionable boutiques, upscale shopping malls, and traditional Viennese markets – yes, I added a touch of retail therapy to my cultural excursion.

The Leopold Museum, another notable institution, is situated in the MuseumsQuartier, a short distance from The Leo Grand Hotel. Dedicated to Austrian modern art, it showcases an extensive collection of works by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. The neighbourhood is known for its trendy cafés,

vibrant bars and boutique shops, offering a delightful blend of cultural immersion and urban exploration.

I also made my way to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, located near the famous Ringstrasse, which is a true gem for art lovers. This magnificent museum, and I have to emphasise the word MAGNIFICENT, houses an extraordinary collection of fine art, including works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Titian. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll from the Leo Grand Hotel, marvelling at the stunning architecture and grandeur of Vienna's Ringstrasse. Along the way, I discovered many elegant restaurants serving traditional Viennese cuisine, and returned to savour the city's culinary delights while enjoying the splendid surroundings.

The Leo Grand Hotel is surrounded by high-end shops, including designer boutiques and luxury department stores, where you can find the latest fashion trends and unique souvenirs. For foodies, Vienna is a paradise, with a wide range of restaurants serving traditional Austrian cuisine, as well as international dishes. Some of the must-try dishes include Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz and Sachertorte, a chocolate cake that is a Viennese speciality.

In terms of things to do, Vienna has something for everyone, from visiting historic landmarks like St. Stephen's Cathedral, Schönbrunn Palace and the state opera house to exploring the city's museums and art galleries. The hotel

is also close to the famous Naschmarkt, a bustling market where you can find fresh produce, spices and souvenirs. For travellers from the Middle East, summer is an amazing time to visit Vienna offering a welcome respite from our own scorching temperatures. There is also an extensive programme of events and festivals across the summer season from opera to music and arts with something for every taste. Or, you could choose to go in wintertime, close to Christmas, when the city is usually a veritable winter wonderland.

FROM SPORT TO SCREEN

TV and sports presenter, commentator, actor and voice specialist Abood, otherwise known as Abdelrahman Aboughanima or abood_afro, is perhaps one of Qatar’s most well-known faces. We caught up with him to learn about his career and what makes him tick.

fact magazine 88 • ARTS & CULTURE

You’ve said that your passion for sport and performing led to your presenting career. Where did that passion come from?

Exercise and sports changed my life. I became addicted to the high of intense exercise as I transformed my body from a young age. I pushed limits and discovered what my body is truly capable of. I developed mental fortitude from exercise and sports that transferred into life. I enjoyed taking part in and watching all sorts of sports, especially mixed martial arts. Everyone in school, including my teachers, would come to me for the latest news on upcoming fights and my insights. I believe that excellence is a result of harmonious passion towards what we choose to do. I chose sport science for my university degree and achieved the highest academic award. Sports showed me what I am truly capable of.

You’ve worked on some seriously prestigious projects, from the FIFA Legends Cup to the Formula 1. Which has been your favourite and do you have any funny or unusual stories you can share?

There are a few moments in my career where I had to pinch myself. Hosting and commentating on the FIFA Legends Cup is definitely one of them. More than 100 legends and most of my childhood heroes, alongside the FIFA President and I had the sweet pleasure to be among them – Alessandro del Piero, Francesco Totti, Ricardo Kaka and Cafu just to name a few. A funny story that I love to share, is when Roberto Carlos came out in the middle of the live broadcast and threw me a football to juggle. I was wearing my suit and not the most appropriate shoes, so you can imagine it was not a highlight-worthy performance. After repeatedly watching me fail to keep the ball up for more than three taps, he playfully took it and threw it into the crowd. All of this was being broadcast live, all over the world, on FIFA+tv and Beinsport.

Hosting at the Ooredoo Arena must be exciting. How do you prepare for these events?

I spend a lot of time on script and research. I like to know every little detail about the event, organisers, partners, competitors and how the schedule will be for the day. For Ooredoo Arena, I worked with a highly professional team at Quest Esports and we did a lot of rehearsals. When you are hosting one of the biggest regional esports events, you have to be prepared for all the different scenarios, as well as be ready to improvise.

How did you become involved with the TV show About Cinema ?

My passion for acting was known in Doha from the different production houses I’ve worked with. I received a request to send a self-tape. Then, I was invited to the set by the producer Emadiddine Elsayed. We shot the pilot and the show kicked off.

What is your own personal favourite sport and do you play any sports?

I am very passionate about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. There is not enough time in a single lifetime to master everything in this sport. I love the challenge of developing my skills and putting them to the

test everyday with my teammates. I train at Vision BJJ and learn from some of the best athletes in the world, Coach Tacio Carneiro and Professor Fabricio Moreira.

Also, I am involved competitively in 9mm pistol shooting and have competed in the last four major finals. I enjoy shooting and hope to be able to do it more often.

How do you like to spend your spare time away from work?

I like to eat. I take myself out to sushi or steak. I like going for walks and sometimes drives while listening to my favourite podcasts. Mostly I exercise and play sport when I am not working. I’ll tell you where you won’t find me, parties!

What are three things in Qatar that you would advise visitors to see, do or experience?

The Olympic Museum, go see Mohammed Ali’s glove from the Sonny Liston fight and much more. Come to the shooting range. Try the traditional Qatari Machboos by a campfire under the Zikreet desert’s starlit sky. ✤

The Bear Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3

Need to Know:

The Bear is an American comedy-drama television series created by Christopher Storer. The story is based around the life of a talented young chef, who cut his teeth working in the world of fine dining, and suddenly finds himself having to come back home to Chicago to run his family's Italian beef sandwich shop after the suicide of his older brother, who has left behind massive debts, a rundown kitchen and an unruly staff.

Director: Christopher Storer, Joanna Calo

Cast : Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Lionel Boyce, Liza Colón-Zayas, Abby Elliott

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The Bear follows Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a talented young chef from the fine-dining world, and Richard ‘Richie’ Jerimovich (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they attempt to change their scruffy restaurant into an actual good food spot. The entire crew, initially disjointed and completely at odds, seem to be working against each other and make life very difficult for everyone. But Carmy attempts to switch things up for the better and the way things play out makes for an entertaining watch. Entering into a world completely different from that he’s been used to, Carmy must now somehow balance dealing with the soul-crushing realities of running a small business as he also figures his way through strained familial relationships that he earlier left behind in Chicago when he moved away. He deals with all of the above while still grappling with the impact of his brother’s suicide. The show is about food, family and the insanity of the grind as Carmy fights to transform his failing family restaurant rather than give up and sell the property. The show serves up an engaging storyline with topnotch performances across the board that’s sure to have viewers coming back for more.

Need to Know:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is a superhero film about Marvel Comics’ team of intergalactic mercenaries (and sometime heroes). Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, the group is still reeling from the loss of Gamora. An unexpected attack at their headquarters sees another team member critically injured sending the group on an urgent adventure to save them or risk the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Director: James Gunn

Cast : Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji

Why Is It Worth Watching?

After the remarkable conclusion to the first era of Marvel’s cinematic universe, the studio following has been steadily losing steam with every release since. That could be attributed to the audiences’ overall fatigue with the genre, or the all too familiar plotlines and universe building being rehashed. But stepping away from the humdrum is Gunn’s final offering in charge of the Guardians. The plot for Vol.3 is an entertaining and heartfelt story that’s filled with the humorous banter and over-the-top cosmic action that we’ve come to expect from this beloved band of misfits. The focus this time centring around the mysterious backstory about the guntoting, boisterous Rocket Raccoon (Cooper). The movie delves deeper into his traumatic backstory and brings forth one of the Marvel universe’s most interesting antagonists – the High Evolutionary (Iwuji). The narrative sees the gang jet across space exploring and adventuring in the strangest and most fascinating destinations as Gunn ties it all together and concludes his version of the Guardians’ story in the most rewarding and satisfactory manner. In true Guardians’ trademark, the soundtrack is once again an absolutely awesome mix throughout the movie!

What Matters Most

The fifth studio album by American singer and songwriter Ben Folds, What Matters Most comes after an eight-year hiatus and is released via New West Records; his last, So There launched in 2015. The wait, however, has been worth it. The artist calls this his most ‘true’ album, one that he couldn’t have made at any other point in his career in terms of the music, lyrics and underlying emotions. The LP offers musical variety with the synth prelude on But Wait, There’s More , which continues to the end, as well as the horns; the brief but heartarresting harmonica set on Back to Anonymous ; the drum backdrop that runs throughout Paddleboat Breakup ; the urgent stringsy tunes of the acoustic guitar on Moments

The melodious Winslow Gardens released earlier this year and has a bittersweet nostalgic vibe. In fact, nostalgia is the common overarching theme and its many nuances and layers appear across the board. The title track is sure to strike a chord with most as it explores the common emotions connected with missing friends, reminiscing on old times while ‘sorting through photos’ and picking up the phone to share news with a close one, only to realise they’re gone.

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

I’ve Loved You For So Long

The Aces are a four-member American alternative pop band. I’ve Loved You For So Long is their third LP released via Red Bull Records. The songs give off your typical teen-girl-in-love vibe but in a good way.

The title track is hummable, especially the catchy ‘Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo’ bit. The drums in the background add a poprock element without taking away from the softness of the song, considering it deals with the delicate emotion of love, of being reunited with a lover, ‘taking her back to where it all started’.

Girls Make Me Wanna Die is fast-paced, more stringsy with forceful bass, and deals with the angst of unrequited young love. The album explores love and its many facets; break-ups, for instance, as on Not The Same Suburban Blues starts off with a powerpacked electric guitar set, which reappears throughout the track. It lends a certain impatient quality, a frustration of sorts, which is reflected in the lyrics too; it’s about feeling trapped in a small town with people who don’t understand you, going about their lives. One wonders if there’s a figurative meaning – sometimes, love can feel that way too. Stop Feeling hits different, having an almost psychedelic quality that’s achieved with a kind of echoing effect using drum beats and piano tunes.

THRILLER/SUSPENSE

Everyone Here Is Lying

In the ‘safe’ suburb of Stanhope, supposed family man William Wooler is devastated at the end of an affair and angry when he comes home to find his nine-year-old daughter, Avery, back from school early. His temper erupts and hours later, the girl is missing. As the search becomes more desperate, neighbours make ever crazier accusations and things become decidedly strange because it seems that everyone here is lying! Will they ever find out who took Avery?

MYSTERY/CRIME

The Block Party

Garnering rave reviews even before its publication, this promises to be the perfect beach or pool read. The ‘friends and neighbours’ in an exclusive cul-de-sac are caught up in a confusing mire of scandalous secrets behind their seemingly idyllic façade until, on the night of the annual Summer Block Party, there’s a murder. The story travels back a year, as rivalries and betrayals unfold with our flawed gang discovering that the real danger lies within their own block and nothing—and no one—is ever as they seem.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

Digital Chore Chart Go Orcas! Sugar, Spice And…

We've said it before, we'll say it again – homemaking is a full-time job. Sadly, it's thankless! Spain, however, is working on an app that will keep track of the chores each member of a household does. This will highlight the work load on women and the resulting mental stress they bear; it's 2023 but we still live in a society that often

Recent reports of killer whales attacking boats off the coast of Spain have struck fear into the hearts of the yachting community. And with media reports speculating that a matriarch orca, White Gladis, previously injured by a marine vessel, had taught her companions to seek revenge, the rebellious cetaceans have garnered an enthusiastic following of eco-warriors. Could it be that humans

An Indian street food vendor has been adding whole green chillies as a topping on ice cream! Inspired by a flavour he tried in Thailand, this creation, he says, is popular with those looking for a spicy, out-of-thebox experience. considers housework as a woman's job. Additionally, homemaking, though it indirectly yet greatly contributes to the economy, isn't a paid job. This app is a step in the right direction and will open many eyes. Additionally, it's a great way to monitor and keep a record of who's doing what and how the work can be divided.

are finally reaping the reward for years of marine interference, whale hunting and theme-park imprisonment? Much as we might like to believe this is the case, experts say the whales – who’ve never previously attacked humans – are much more likely to be curious about the boats and exhibiting short-lived ‘fad’ behaviour, such as that seen in 1987 when orcas were witnessed parading with dead salmon on their heads!

come up with new ideas in order to stay in the game. While some are calling this particular concept vile, others are lapping it up, literally! But one can't deny, it's a well-thought-of, calculated combination; it's not unheard of to add chilli to drinks and chocolate. Moreover, with organised brands coming out with outrageous flavours such as mac and cheese and pizza, this small-time ice cream vendor, we think, is pretty 'cool'!
