A Time To Give

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill

T

he festive season is the time of year when we’re usually shopping like crazy, grabbing gifts for friends and loved ones in what is, let’s face it, a frenzy of mindless consumption. After all, how many pairs of socks and novelty mugs can a person use? This year, in light of the troubled situation in our region, many of us will

be scaling back our celebrations as we think of others. With that in mind, rather than our usual gift guide, we’ve come up with lots of locally-based initiatives for giving back. Whether it be donating cash, money or, just as importantly, time, there are numerous ways to get involved. I know you, our readers, are a generous lot and would love to hear from you if you decide to take up the challenge. Though we are curtailing the festive activities a bit, we’ll definitely still be having a Christmas dinner – I certainly don’t want to miss out on the stuffing and roasties. If you’re the same, you’ll love our second big feature where you’ll find some of the best offers around for festive dining and New Year parties. Elsewhere, my colleague enjoyed a trip to Fuwairit Kite Beach, where she had a great time. But, for once, I’m not jealous. You’ll see why in our Travel Section, I was busy swanning around in Rome enjoying all the history and great food of the Eternal City. And, speaking of things Italian, we got to put the latest Alfa Romeo through its paces this month, too. We’ve also got our usual roundups of news from the worlds of tech, entertainment, motoring and fashion and lots of great happenings around the city in our Listen Up pages. How ever you choose to spend the holiday season, I wish you a peaceful one. See you on the other side in 2024.

The competition drew more than 100 entries from countries across the Middle East and North Africa Region and was launched in line with the platform’s aim of promoting and nurturing regional talent. An internal jury at TOD selected the winning entries based on overall concept, plot execution, tone and topic, originality, structure, shooting and production values, editing quality, cultural significance and adherence to copyright rules. Among the winning line-up was Sana Al Ansari, who holds a BA from Northwestern University and an MA from UCL. Her winning documentary, Batch 10, illustrates the personal journey of two soldiers who undertake national military service and the obstacles they face. “It shows how this military service has impacted them in a positive way despite the struggles they had leaving their families behind,” explained Sana, who says making the film was one of the most challenging things she had to do in her whole life. However, she added that it was also incredibly rewarding. The winning films will now be streamed on TOD, the region’s leading sports and entertainment streaming platform. John Paul McKerlie, VP of Marketing and Sales at TOD, said: “Our congratulations go to all the winners who faced fierce competition demonstrating the wealth of filming talent in the region. “We received an overwhelming response and interest from filmmakers and institutes from the region for our first-ever short film festival. It was a welcome surprise and further affirms our belief in the region’s immense indigenous creative talent. We 14

‘TIS THE SEASON TO GIVE BACK This is a time of the year when we get together with family and friends and exchange gifts to show how much we care. Every year, FACT puts together a gifting guide. However, this year, nobody can be unaware of the troubled circumstances in the region and many will be having low-key celebrations, if any at all. So, we thought it would be the perfect time to look at ways of giving back. We’ve uncovered a range of organisations that work toward the bigger, social good; it’s a time to show ‘our extended family’ that we care. This festive season, pay it forward by giving back with these charities and campaigns.

QATAR CHARITY Formerly Qatar Charitable Society, Qatar Charity is an NGO (non-governmental organisation) set up in 1992 by a group of Qatari philanthropists, alarmed by the rising number of children orphaned by wars and conflicts in neighbouring countries. It’s grown to become one of the largest humanitarian and development organisations in the world, providing life-saving assistance to those hit by conflicts, persecution and natural disasters and creating durable solutions for poverty using sustainable development programmes in social welfare, water and sanitation, education, nutrition and economic empowerment. Its reach is substantial, from building new schools in Bangladesh to providing winter supplies to internally displaced people in Syria, and it currently has numerous options for donating from as little as QR50 towards emergency relief for Palestinians. You can also donate as a gift or maybe, particularly for those who have children of their own, sponsor a child. If you’re having a New Year clear out, Qatar Charity also accepts donations of shoes, clothes, toys and appliances either through its TAYF containers, which are all over the country, or its many roadside kiosks. Find out more at qcharity.org

QATAR RED CRESCENT The first voluntary and charitable organisation in the country, Qatar Red Crescent was established in 1978 gaining recognition from the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva in 22

1981 and joining the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). It participates in numerous activities both at home – such as help with rent for families in distress – and overseas – including offering vocational support for displaced people in Yemen and operating a health centre for people with disabilities in Somalia. There is an ongoing campaign which has raised more than QR39 million for Palestinian relief. There are also opportunities and training for volunteers on numerous ongoing and emergency projects. EDUCATION ABOVE ALL Education Above All (EAA) works to ensure equal access to education and to harness the power of quality education for positive, sustainable and inclusive change. EAA is the brainchild of founder Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the former First Lady of the State of Qatar, and a long-time advocate for education. It works both at home, providing education for the children of low-income families, and overseas, through sponsorship and the provision of teachers in areas such as Sudan. At the end of November EAA hosted the Children Above All event to raise awareness of the plight of children in Gaza during the ongoing conflict. It included sports and competitions for all the family and a march for peace. With the slogan ‘It All Starts With You’, EAA has a youth advocacy programme for young people, aged 15 to 30, to learn how to advocate for the educational rights of all people. Volunteers receive training in advocacy skills as well as the opportunity to take part in forums and networks representing the voice of children and young people. Find out more at educationaboveall.org or donate at donate. educationaboveall.org

UNICEF GULF UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, which is now United Nations Children’s Fund) offers humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. CHARITY WEEK This is an international non-profit that began life as a vision in the year 2000 – a vision that the problems of the world could not be solved by money, but through unity. A vision that stated that we were stronger together rather than apart and that our situation would not change unless we change ourselves. After years of preparation, the first trial run took place using a shoebox and a handwritten poster in St George’s Medical School, South London, England.

MERGING TRADITION AND TECHNOLOGY The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce is a trailblazing sports SUV with an impressive array of best-in-class technical features. 50

CITY RIDES •

W

e first caught a sneak peek of the Tonale back in 2019 when, displayed to the public as a concept vehicle, it was greeted with great enthusiasm by car connoisseurs. Fast forward to 2023 and, thanks to the team at Al Fardan Sports Motors, we found ourselves staring at a vehicle that proved even more impressive in the flesh or, should we say, in the paint.

appreciated the gloss black painted window surrounds that underscore the privacy glass – perfect to enjoy a moment to yourself and avoid the summer sun. At the back end we found the three-plus-three taillights to ensure a balanced overall look to the exterior, with the familiar Alfa Romeo emblem sitting proudly above the elegant Tonale badge. Delivering a subtle promise of superior performance are two separate tailpipes located on each side of the diffuser.

Unmistakable Exterior Design

Convenient Cockpit

What stood out to us most about this all-new Alfa was its exuberant curves, complemented by the brand’s customary flair. An aggressive-looking bonnet culminates in the brand’s unmistakable scudetto – finished in black – with the classic Alfa Romeo emblem sitting front and centre like a badge of honour. Further emphasising the car’s contemporary design are sleek, triple-barrelled, sine-curve headlights with new full-LED adaptive matrix. As we moved to the sides, we appreciated the smooth transition of the car’s bodyline that accentuates the all-round athletic stance of this SUV. Our must-mention features of the flanks include the striking five-hole wheel rims, along with the model’s standard 19inch, diamond-cut alloy wheels, underscored by red-painted Brembo brake callipers. Ornamentation is delivered through elegant Veloce model badges located on the fenders. We also

Once inside, we were initially taken by the abundance of space on offer as well as the comfort provided by the perforated Alcantara and leatherette seats. We discovered a roomy and driver-friendly cockpit that provides a relaxed and convenient environment from which to operate this tidy and trendy SUV. It was, however, in the little details that the Tonale’s interior truly began to shine. A beefy gear selector complete with a little tricolore flag, allows for effortless selection between the Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive options. Alfa Romeo have also provided additional traditional touches in their new SUV, with all perfectly placed gauges reverting to the brand’s historic twin-portal design, albeit now in digital format. We collectively agreed that the three-spoke sports steering wheel felt perfect in hand and combined with the aluminium pedals, door sills and shift paddles, imbued the Tonale’s interior with a sense of high expense. fact magazine

New Age Tech And Infotainment

Imposing Power And Performance

After fiddling with the Tonale’s all-new infotainment system for a day, we now understand why this SUV’s fast and efficient interface – perfect for multitasking – is considered best-in-class in its segment. This customisable Android operating system, featuring 4G connectivity and over-the-air updates, includes a fully digital 12.3inch screen, in addition to the primary 10.25-inch touchscreen unit. We established that amongst the main drawing cards of this system are its easily discernible screen layouts, along with the built-in Amazon Alexa voice assistant features, both allowing hands to be kept on the steering wheel as much as possible. Moreover, we found the traditional USB and USB-C ports in the front and back of the car, along with the wireless charging pad up front, to add to the convenient nature of the Tonale’s distinguished interior. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the new Tonale is the inclusion of industry-first technology. The brand has debuted non-fungible token (NFT) technology that links the car with an NFT digital certificate. In a nutshell, this groundbreaking tech, based on the blockchain card concept, records the main stages in the life of an individual vehicle. With the customer’s consent, the NFT will record vehicle data, generating a certificate that can be used as a guarantee that the car has been properly maintained, thereby providing a positive impact on its residual value.

Powered by a turbo-charged GDI (gasoline direct injection), four-cylinder, fuel injection system, the all-new Tonale proved more than capable when out on the tarmac. Coupled with a nine-speed automatic transmission, this sprightly SUV produces 268hp and 400Nm of power at 3000rpm. After putting it through its paces, we concluded that the Tonale’s power is complemented by its best-in-class driving dynamics. Thanks to its optimised weight distribution, suspension system and direct steering, it delivers impeccable dynamic behaviour that endows the SUV with the feel of a high-performance sports car. We must say, we had a thoroughly enjoyable on-road experience in this most capable vehicle. The inclusion of Level 2 autonomous driving with new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAD) added to the feeling of complete control and comfort provided by this exceptional Alfa Romeo specimen. This superior system includes intelligent adaptive cruise control (IACC), lane centring (LC) and traffic jam assist – which automatically adjusts speed and trajectory, keeping the car in the middle of the lane and at a distance from the vehicle in front.

Our Verdict The all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale is a classy and capable sports SUV, offering an abundance of cutting-edge tech and a safe and comfortable travelling environment. ✤

Cloaked

iNaturalist is a social network for sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature. The app’s primary goal is to connect people to nature and secondary, is to generate scientifically valuable biodiversity data from these personal encounters. iNaturalist helps users identify plants and animals with visually similar suggestions, verified by dedicated contributors. Users can take or import a photo, view the top-10 matches of the most similar species and tap through them to get more information. Moreover, subscribers can create an account to share their observations and connect with a community of experts and naturalists to learn more. By recording and sharing their observations, users can create research-quality data that could help scientists working to better understand and protect nature. iNaturalist has been translated into dozens of languages thanks to multilingual enthusiasts who want to see the community grow.

As the number of applications we access daily keeps increasing, the risk of our sensitive data being breached is an everpresent concern. Cloaked lets users take control of their data by providing them a personalised, fully-encrypted server that generates unlimited, secure identities in place of personal info. Cloaked believes that users have the right to privacy and produces unlimited emails, phone numbers, passwords and usernames. Traditional password managers make saving repeat information for different accounts the norm, which leaves holes in users’ privacy and security that can then grant easy access to hackers. But Cloaked saves users’ identities with unique information, so logins are easy but the information is diverse and virtually impossible to identify. The app’s zero access architecture means that users’ data is encrypted on their side using an encryption key that even Cloaked does not have access to.

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

What first drew you to becoming a chef? Cooking has always been a very big part of my family. I first got interested through my mother, she is an amazing cook. I was watching what she was doing in the kitchen from a young age. When I was 11 or 12 years old, I started cooking the family meals and experimenting with tastes and flavours. This experimental nature with food is what has really defined my development as a chef, taking bits from different international cuisines and melding them into unique and beautiful dishes. South Africa is a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, therefore I was exposed to many different types of food from a young age, and loved them all. Why did you decide to make the move from South Africa to the Middle East and what are the main kitchen differences you have found in this part of the world? When I was working in Cape Town, I was offered an exciting opportunity in Bahrain. I have always loved travelling, so it was a no-brainer for me to experience something new. I have never been shy to try new things and get out of my comfort zone. The main difference I have found is working with people from all over the world, it has been eye-opening learning how different cultures deal with different situations. Also learning more about Middle Eastern cuisine has been fantastic, seeing the slight differences from different parts of the region but at the same time how passionate people are about those differences. Your current and last positions involved setting up franchise operations for international brands. How do you go about this and is there any room for adding local touches? The most important aspect of setting up any new restaurant

is the team you build around you. As well as the operation involved in providing perfect food consistently, a great kitchen structure is nothing without a team of passionate chefs striving for the same goal, just like a great team of chefs need a good kitchen to perform their tasks effectively, this goes hand in hand and once you have a happy situation like that you will taste that love and joy in every plate of food that leaves the kitchen. In terms of local flavours, I have always adapted local cultures and flavours in every place I have worked in the Middle East, at Calexico [Bahrain] we had a malghoum burrito on the menu as well a Bahraini chicken tikka taco. Here at Twisted Olive, you can find many Arabic influences throughout our menu. What is your signature dish and what makes it popular? It’s difficult for me to nail down one dish as my signature, I have such an extensive menu that I have many that I really love. These dishes are like my babies, you cannot have a favourite, but one thing you can find in most of the dishes I create is that you will struggle to find them anywhere else, my flavour combinations and plating styles are quite authentic and I do things a little bit out the box, I like to give a fun twist to everything I create. For example, having a Caprese-style eggs Benedict on a base of homemade falafel, I really love this dish because it's something you would never expect but works so well when it comes together. I believe in not over complicating food but everything you do, you do it perfectly with the best quality ingredients making it fresh and not buying ‘convenience’ ready-made items, this is what makes Twisted Olive food special, real food made with love. ✤ fact magazine

CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

A

s we entered the lobby at the Waldorf Astoria Doha West Bay, on our way to Tribeca Market – a New York-themed restaurant on the first floor – we were struck by the hotel’s opulent ambience. A grand Tiffany & Co clock commanded our attention from its marble perch, surrounded by sumptuous seating. The soft cadence of a live pianist blended with the buzz of a thriving café to our left. Attentive staff glided across the sleek marble, guiding us to the lift area where we ascended excitedly. Stepping out, we were greeted by three smiling staff members with a welcome drink of red berry and apple, alongside a hot towel. As we headed into the main restaurant, the décor was a masterclass in contemporary luxury, the striking black and white marble flooring evoking a sense of classic elegance. This theme served as a perfect canvas, highlighting the vibrant red-hued chairs, which added a touch of contemporary flair. The brass light fixtures above us grounded the space in tradition, casting a warm, inviting glow. Mirrors cleverly placed around the room amplified the soft lighting, creating a dance of reflections, echoing the harmonious blend of American charm and modern luxury. Three Decades of Experience Nestled in our plush booth, we were soon introduced to Chef Thomas, whose handshake was as firm as his culinary reputation. His tales of over three decades in the kitchen, from the vibrant food scenes of the Far East to the heart of Doha, were as captivating as the dishes he had created. Under his watchful eye, fact magazine

71

• CULINARY SPOTLIGHT he had personally developed the entire menu concept as well as training the team. Yassine, our waiter, provided service that was both seamless and personal and Sean’s recommendations were eloquent and insightful. Each interaction was a testament to Chef Thomas's mentorship, ensuring that our dining experience was nothing short of exceptional. A Taste of the Sea It was the in-house bakery that presented us with our first taste of what was to come – an incredible sourdough with a perfectly golden crust, alongside a trio of dips. Having devoured the delicious bread, a serving of Temari Tuna soon arrived at our table. The yellowfin tuna, carved into precise rounds, offered a buttery tenderness, a stark contrast to the crisp daikon pickles. Each morsel was a bite-sized celebration of the sea's most delicate flavours. The Japanese influence continued with Flamed Salmon Nigiri – a delicate brushstroke on a canvas of rice. The salmon, kissed by flames, unfolded its smoky secrets, while the sesame gel and beetroot pearls brought a burst of earthy sweetness, a symphony of flavours that echoed the depths of a tranquil coral reef. Behind the Scenes After savouring our starters, Chef Thomas offered a glimpse into the creative process behind the dishes. With a spark of passion in his eyes, he explained how the delicate beetroot pearls were crafted. The process involved a meticulous technique where beetroot juice was gently poured onto a bed of semi-frozen olive oil. This method allowed the juice to set into tiny, pearllike formations, in a visually stunning and flavourful garnish. This intricate detail not only added a burst of earthy sweetness to the dish but also showcased the restaurant's innovative approach and attention to the minutest aspects of culinary art. Main Course Mastery The Bass in a Bag that followed re-emphasised the consistent dedication to superior ingredients. The French variety of sea bass was cocooned in paper and paired with garden vegetables and saffron potatoes. Beurre blanc and caviar elevated it to celestial heights. It was remarkable how much better than usual the French fish tasted. Its flesh was denser with a more delicate flavour and the mouth feel was so much more satisfying. Still marvelling at the quality and texture of our preceding plate, the Char-Grilled Australian Wagyu Sirloin that followed was an additional indulgence. The meat, with its intricately marbled texture, showcased the high-quality grazing and care given to the cattle. Each slice, adorned with hints of charred leek and celeriac, fermented garlic and shallots, offered a decadent journey through a realm of smoke and umami. The accompanying Bearnaise sauce added a rich, velvety layer, enhancing the already exceptional dish with its creamy complexity. A Delightful Conclusion As our meal drew to a close, the desserts by Pastry Chef Frederic Guinot were a fitting tribute to the sophistication of the savoury courses. The Peanut-Chocolate Bar, a refined twist on the classic Snickers, showcased a playful balance of textures with smooth 72

chocolate ice cream and freeze-dried crumble, elevating a familiar treat into an elegant delight. The Halva Parfait was equally impressive, blending tradition with innovation. Its layers of nutty sesame and caramelised pumpkin, complemented by chocolate sable, offered a journey through rich, Middle Eastern-inspired flavours. The desserts were not mere sweet endings but integral components of Tribeca Market's culinary narrative, matching the quality and creativity of the savoury dishes. In short, Tribeca Market is a haven for those who cherish the finer things in life, particularly suited for gourmets who delight in understanding the story behind their food. It's an ideal spot for special occasions, business rendezvous, with Business Lunch starting from December 1, or relaxed gatherings. Indeed, every aspect of the dining experience, from the first bite to the last moment of relaxation, was nothing short of extraordinary. ✤

A

t Tropicana 360 in Dusit Hotel & Suites - Doha, we found ourselves enveloped in a space where decadence fuses with a chic urban vibe. Wooden beams arched above us, honouring a traditional aesthetic, set against the striking black and white chequered floor that shone beneath our feet. Overhead, golden lights cast a warm, inviting glow, reflecting off the expansive mirrors and giving the illusion of an infinite dining space. Verdant plants cascaded from the rafters, enlivening the area and setting a serene counterpoint to the rich interiors. The soft buzz of conversation, the gentle clinking of glassware and the alluring aromas of exquisite cuisine completed our sensory introduction. Yet, what truly took our breath away was the outside seating area. Situated on the 48th floor of the hotel, the restaurant boasts the highest terrace in Doha. As we ventured outdoors, a background melody of ambient tunes mingled with the scene, enhancing the grandeur of the city stretching beneath us. Hospitality That Remembers Your Name The warmth of the welcome immediately set the tone for the evening. The staff, with their genuine smiles and attentive demeanour, ushered us in with the utmost professionalism and genuine hospitality. Raz, a familiar face from our previous visit, particularly surprised us by remembering our names, adding a personal touch that made the experience all the more special. We were seated right by the glass partition at the edge, offering an uninterrupted view that added another layer of excitement to the evening. The transparent barrier made us feel as if we were floating high above the city. Simplicity and Authenticity Chef Cristian immediately joined us at our table and started to share his passion for his craft. His culinary mantra, "Fresh ingredients, simple dishes, expertly executed”, set the stage for a dining experience that promised authenticity, quality and unparalleled taste. We started our meal with fresh homemade guacamole. The creamy avocado dip came with corn tostadas and pico de gallo, adding both texture and a zesty kick. Next came a wild mushroom flatbread straight from the wood-fired oven. The meaty portobello mushrooms were like hearty steaks, paired with little button mushrooms like flavourful sidekicks, going well with the crispy blistered crust and melted cheese. Following this, two tacos arrived at our table – La Baja fish and Pastor. The fish in the Baja tacos was lightly fried, then stacked with cooling coleslaw and rich avocado cream between a soft corn tortilla. The pastor featured tender marinated chicken strips and sweet roasted pineapple salsa on another warm tortilla – like a Mexican fiesta on your palate. The Role of Indigenous Ingredients In between courses, we chatted at length with Chef Cristian, impressed by his zeal for authentic Mexican dishes and his insistence on using indigenous ingredients. He isn’t just creating meals; he’s crafting experiences. Sourcing corn directly from Mexico and using annatto, a unique spice, he brings authentic flavours straight to your plate. His commitment to excellence is evident in the minute details, such as meticulously crushing coriander to produce a rich, flavourful oil. These subtle touches are the marks of a true maestro, underscoring that the food here isn’t just good; it’s exceptional. Peruvian Spices Meet Oceanic Delights For our mains, we chose the lamb chops and the A la Talla Sea Bass. The lamb had a perfect pink interior with a delicious Peruvian spice rub adding warmth like a cosy fireplace. The sea bass was steamed in a banana leaf, the flesh just flaking off the bone. Despite being full, we couldn't resist trying two tempting desserts. The sweet potato tart had a flaky pastry base with smooth, cinnamon sweet potato filling, finished with drizzled dulce de leche like a sweet lullaby. The tres leches cake was super moist from its three-milk soak and topped with lightly sweetened whipped cream like a fluffy cloud. ark wood meets soft lighting for an upscale, intimate feel at Hunters Room & Grill inside The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa. The restaurant, on the mezzanine floor, is surrounded by lush indoor gardens with a stunning water feature. Soft, upbeat music surrounds us. I’m relieved my guest and I dressed up – this is an elegant eatery. Restaurant manager Alla greets us warmly, shows us to our spacious table by the waterfall, and introduces our waiter. We immediately quiz him on cuts of meat, but he suggests we also venture off the steak menu. And just like that, his expertise sets our feast in motion… Smoked paprika and honey, balsamic reduction and hazelnut; such butters accompany our warm, crusty bread alongside a bright splash of salt and chili. We resist the urge to devour the entire loaf, and are rewarded with a platter of fresh oysters, sprinkled with caviar and micro herbs. We shlurp down the chilled shellfish, gloriously gluttonous. Only two oysters down, and my burnt pineapple virgin mojito arrives. Fresh mint leaves burst out of the jar alongside a hunk of charred pineapple. Icy, caramelised fruit in a glass – it’s a favourite of Hunters’ regulars and I can taste why. Judging by my guest’s glee squeezing juice from the dripping, fleshy fruit on her frozen passionfruit daiquiri, she is equally thrilled. Our prelude to the meat course comes in the form of a delightfully fresh kale salad and a plate of prawns-popcorn; a colossal calorie contrast. Tangy apple slices offset fragrant tomatoes, and the pomegranate delivers a deliciously sweet crunch. The salad complements my favourite popcorn – the kind made with tiger shrimp, dipped in chipotle. It’s obscenely juicy, hot and succulent, and the deep-fried batter forces us to throw caution to the wind and guzzle with gusto. Now for the main event! Carnivores say that true love is rare, like a good steak. At Hunters, at least for me, true love is medium-rare. It also presents as a succulent, marbled, salted, Black Angus ribeye. On my plate. Deliriously happy with my choice, I can hear my guest’s steak sizzling its way over to her – a thick cut of Wagyu rump, with a side of hot, crisp sweet potato fries and grilled asparagus dripping with butter. My side is mashed potato with a drizzle of white truffle oil. Potatoes can carry half their weight in butter, so it’s a fittingly rich companion to Black Angus.

All is silent as we dig in, always a good sign. The meat is buttery smooth, rich juices flowing forth to blend deliciously with our sides, and so tender, it hardly needs chewing. Steaks devoured. Mash gobbled. Fries inhaled. Now, a buzzy peach and mint sorbet arrives to reset our palates for the last hurrah. Being British, I take my sticky toffee pudding very seriously, and I love a restaurant that feels the same. We order the iconic dessert, together with a deconstructed lemon and strawberry cheesecake. The cheesecake resembles Eton Mess – an abundance of textures, a light creamy taste, and layered with zesty fruit compote. But my sticky toffee pudding wins our hearts with its moist date sponge, luxurious caramel sauce and pistachio crumbs. At a top steakhouse, you expect outrageously good meat. And Hunters delivers that, alongside great starters, sides and sweets. But the impeccable service blows us out of the water. Our waiter’s guidance is clearly grounded in deep knowledge, and a genuine interest in our enjoyment – like the guardian angel of our evening, but without the hovering! Food heaven, with service to match. I’ll certainly be going back. ✤

A hospitable porter greeted us with a warm smile, deftly took charge of our bags and ushered us into the lobby. What greeted us was nothing short of extraordinary – a check-in desk ingeniously crafted from half a VW Beetle, emanating a super funky vibe. We sank into plush green leather sofas and were offered a delightful welcome drink from a circulating platter. As we sipped, our eyes began to dance across the room. It was a visual feast – an eclectic mix of murals and furniture that ranged from shabby chic to ultra-modern. The atmosphere imbued with an airy, luminous quality that was both energising and calming. Glancing through the expansive windows, we could see the swimming pool that beckoned invitingly. And just beyond that, the beach – a vibrant tableau of kites fluttering in the sky, providing a kaleidoscopic spectacle against the backdrop of sand and sea.

A Beach In Our Backyard After a swift check-in, a buggy whisked us through the hotel complex to our King Kite Beach Room with Sea View. Sliding doors opened onto our very own slice of beach paradise. A large cushion beckoned, a hammock swayed gently in the breeze and a pair of sun loungers sat invitingly on the sand, all set to the soothing soundtrack of ocean waves kissing the shore. The focal point of the room was an overhead fan, hewn from a single piece of dark wood, imparting an air of organic elegance. Practicality wasn't overlooked either; bedside USB ports, recessed LED and black lighting and a sleek control panel for room automation ensured a seamless experience. Amenities were in abundance – a tea and coffee station, a well-stocked fridge, his and hers sinks and a luxurious walk-in rain shower. A vivid mural adorned the wall, adding an artistic touch to the space.

Culinary Diversity At The Rider After a relaxing day soaking up the sun and swimming in the sea, we were ready for a delicious evening meal at The Rider, a casual dining spot serving up classic Middle Eastern and international cuisines. We started with the FKBoush salad, a fresh and vibrant mix of greens, Arabic bread croutons, and a tangy pomegranate dressing. For the main course, we ordered the grilled rib-eye steak which came with a choice of sides. We opted for the sautéed mushrooms and broccoli. The beef was cooked perfectly medium-well, with a nice char on the outside, and was incredibly tender and flavourful. The mushrooms paired nicely with the meat, soaking up the natural juices and the broccoli provided a fresh, green contrast. A side of parmesan truffle fries added a touch of decadence. To finish our meal on a sweet note, we shared the Um Ali. fact magazine

Families dined while overlooking the beach, with soft breezes carrying the scent of the sea as music played in the background, instantly putting us in vacation mode. Next morning, we decided to burn off some calories with a visit to the hotel's fully equipped gym. Situated in a separate building from the main complex, the space boasted a cuttingedge range of equipment, including free weights and cardio machines, leaving no room for fitness compromises. There was also a yoga studio, offering a tranquil setting for a morning stretch or meditative moment.

A Buffet Of Breakfast Choices Feeling invigorated, we decided to check out the buffet breakfast – the spread was truly impressive. Hot options abounded, with a hearty selection of sausages, beans, hash browns, foul medames and much more. Those inclined towards lighter fare were equally catered to – a cold meat section perfectly complemented by an array of fresh salads. Maintaining the laid-back atmosphere from the previous evening, the experience was effortlessly relaxed. An à la carte menu was also on offer for those craving something extra. We opted for the Shakshuka – a simmering skillet of

Al Fresco Barbecue Delights Come lunchtime, the culinary festivities continued, this time in the form of an al fresco barbecue. The head chef himself was at the helm, expertly managing two egg-shaped barbecues that promised a smoky feast. What followed was a mixed grill that was a carnivore's dream. Calamari was cooked just right, offering a slightly chewy contrast to the delicately grilled shrimp. The whitefish had a flaky tenderness that made it effortlessly enjoyable. The baked potatoes on the side were executed to perfection. Their skin crisped to a golden hue, encasing a fluffy, buttery interior.

Endless Family Fun While we indulged, a party atmosphere pervaded the surroundings. Families engaged in pool games, filling the air with laughter and splashes. The backdrop was further animated by kite surfing enthusiasts carving their paths across the bay. Their colourful kites soaring and dipping, adding an extra layer of excitement. The hotel offers an extensive range of activities to keep everyone entertained day and night. Outdoor movie screenings run from 8pm onwards, allowing families to snuggle up under the stars. Karaoke in the yoga room from 7pm to 9pm promises fun for all ages. For more active pursuits, be sure to ask the front desk about beach volleyball, soccer and padel available during the day, weather permitting. Families can also bond over board games and billiards available all day long. The kite school even provides activities for school kids every day from 9am to 5pm, subject to weather and tide conditions. With this exciting lineup, there's always something to do. In conclusion, you'd be hard-pressed to find a place like this in Doha that offers such unparalleled access to the beach, seamlessly merging indoor luxury with an outdoor lifestyle. The atmosphere is so laid-back that heading to dinner in your shorts feels perfectly acceptable. Add to this a treasure trove of sporting activities that keeps both adults and children engrossed for hours on end, and you have a well-rounded experience that's both relaxing and invigorating. hey say all roads lead to Rome and what would be a trip to Italy without a visit to the ‘Eternal City’? For us though, a stay at Anantara Palazzo Naiadi was the cherry on the cake of a short but sweet sojourn in this amazing metropolis. Our arrival was as smooth as can be, but a note of warning for anyone heading to Palazzo Naiadi – it is literally three minutes’ walk from Roma Termini, the main train station. We wondered why the taxi driver gave us a bit of an odd look! The hotel takes its name from the Fountain of the Naiads, which is right out front in Piazza della Repubblica, its elegant, ancient statuary pouring forth streams of water that glitter in the early morning sun. After a swift check in, we headed to our room and found our window looked out over this 1888 masterpiece.

Upstairs Downstairs We were treated to a Duplex Suite – the living area and bathroom on one level and the superbly comfortable bed up a set of stairs on an eye-catching mezzanine. On entering the room, I was blown away by the aforementioned window, reaching right up to the double-height ceiling and lending the space an immense sense of grandeur and light. Thick carpeting and an elegant and comfortable threepiece suite invited us to relax and pore over an artistic coffee table book or simply chill with a drink from the well-stocked mini bar or the Italian essential, a professional looking coffee machine. My breath was taken again by the bathroom. Clad in marble the intoxicating shade of warm honey, we were greeted by a deep soaking tub alongside an enclosed rain shower and double sinks surrounded by toiletries from Aqua Di Parma. I didn’t steal them… but I was sorely tempted! After a quick spruce up, we headed back downstairs to explore the lobby, which is very definitely the focal point in a property that’s abundant in amazing spaces. Intricately moulded ceilings house interesting lighting installations including an impressive Murano glass chandelier. And the contemporary art dotted around is both thought provoking and pleasing to the eye.

Dining Extraordinaire Our first experience of the exceptional culinary offerings available at Anantara Palazzo Naiadi was in a quiet room off the Lobby Bar – which, by the way, is beautiful and put me in mind of something out of The Great Gatsby, elegant and refined with the feeling that you could easily encounter Rome’s great and good in evening dress, en route to the theatre or a swanky dinner. For a late lunch after our arrival, I chose a club sandwich which could easily have fed both myself and my travelling companion (and probably a few more besides). The portion was enormous, the sandwich tasty and satisfying. The property is home to several outstanding dining outlets, 90

spectacular views. Recently opened and rapidly establishing a reputation as the place to see and be seen, this hotspot abuts the pool, where, by day, you’ll find guests enjoying a haven of tranquillity in the heart of the buzzing city. But by night, its laid-back mix of great music and a selection of mixed drinks, snacks and an eclectic menu mean it’s drawing in a fun crowd. Our last foodie spot to try was La Fontana Ristorante where we started our days with the most amazing breakfast spread. From eggs and bacon to the wonderful hams and cheeses for which Italy is rightly famed, a huge selection of cakes – those Italians sure do wake up with a sweet tooth – plus cereals and fruit for the more health conscious, there wasn’t any brekkie ‘must have’ I didn’t spot.

Historically Speaking Luxury travel these days is about so much more than highthread-count sheets and fabulous bathroom amenities – though these are, of course, very welcome. Anantara is a brand that’s well acquainted with the concept of the experiential. Thus, after a brief chat with our host, my companion and I found ourselves booked on the Vespa Sidecar Tour of Rome. and amused waves from the people we passed, which was pretty cool, this really is the ideal way to visit lots of busy spots in a city tightly packed with absolute must-sees. From the Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon – where we went inside and learned loads of interesting facts from Allessi – to the top of Gianicolo Hill, where we stopped to enjoy the panoramic view of the capital spread below, and then down into Trastevere and the Jewish Ghetto, we covered so much more ground in a few hours than we could have managed on foot or via conventional transport – not to mention gaining pretty impressive bragging rights and some awesome pictures to remember it by. And, speaking of the experiential, Anantara Palazzo Naiadi can also arrange off-the-books-style Vatican tours, including a Christmas Eve mass – something anyone would love, regardless of their faith. Back at base and it was time for a tour taking in a range of rooms from the regular Deluxe to the Presidential Suite – totally fit for royalty and more than a few VIPs have made this their Roman base. The hotel itself is a 19th century marble palace built on top of the famous Diocletian thermal baths that date from AD298 to AD 306. In another of those one-of-a-kind encounters, we headed to the lower ground floor where meeting rooms have been constructed in vaulted areas surrounding the excavated foundations, pools and mosaics of the baths, which can be seen under glass. It’s fabulous to view but I’m not sure I’d get much work done in a meeting there!

And So, To Spa And, last but not least, no visit to an Anantara property would be complete without a trip to the spa, which is at the heart of the brand’s Asian beginnings. Also known for incorporating local ingredients and traditions, I got to enjoy the Diocletian Ritual featuring olive oil, honey, sea salt, salt-pan mud, St. John’s wort, laurel, sage and lavender all fused together to detox, purify, enrich and heal. Spa Manager Luccio explained that all the plants are grown and harvested in Italy, giving that wonderful, fresh, local feel and, after a scrub, wrap and massage designed along the lines of those carried out back in the days of the original thermal baths, my skin felt amazing and even my soul revived.

Arrivederci Roma All too soon it was time to say goodbye and we headed to the airport secure in the knowledge that we’ll be back – after all, as instructed, we’d turned our backs and tossed coins over our shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, so it’s only a matter of time, right? ✤

With his distinct approach to cinema and an undeniable expertise in combining visual effects and incredible storytelling, Ridley Scott is one of the best filmmakers of our generation. By no means a stranger to crafting breathtaking historical epics, with the likes of Gladiator and, more recently, The Last Duel under his belt, the veteran director now takes on the life of famed French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix will be reuniting with the director on screen for the first time in 23 years. He last played the main antagonist Commodus in Gladiator, a role that won him an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Napoleon is a spectacle-filled, action epic that details the riveting rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor, but simultaneously also shines a light on his fascinating but rocky relationship with Empress Joséphine. Shot against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking brilliance and elevated by phenomenal performances from the cast, the movie masterfully captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power while also highlighting his visionary military and political tactics, that are showcased in some of the most astonishing battle sequences seen on screen.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Director David Fincher and screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker reunite after their masterpiece Se7en. Based on a French graphic novel series by Alexis Nolent, the movie’s plot follows the chaos that ensues after an assassin with a perfect record finally misses. A lot is conveyed in narration, as we listen to the thoughts of the cold, calculated and emotionally detached assassin that Michael Fassbender effortlessly portrays. An attack on his girlfriend sees him turning the tables and realising that the only defence he’s left with is an offence. Though seemingly a fast-paced thriller on the surface, the movie doesn’t shy away from taking its sweet time unravelling specific plot points. In those moments the assassin’s personality traits such as his dollar-store, philosophical takes on himself, his job and life, and his reliance on listening to The Smiths to calm his nerves as he carries out murders, unexpectedly give the movie a comedic and borderline silly twist making it less serious and more of a fun watch than expected.

The Book At War

By Andrew Pettegree

FOLK ROCK

POP/R&B

Hadsel By Beirut

Good People By Majid Jordan

Following recurring health issues and career-threatening throat problems that led to a cancelled tour in 2019, Beirut’s Zach Condon took himself to a cabin in Hadsel, in northern Norway, to rest and recover. With minimal daylight and living in a secluded cabin, he took inspiration from the beauty of the region and the local Hadsel kirke (church) organ, that eventually bore fruit as the sixth Beirut album – Hadsel. Dealing with a difficult personal period, one would expect the music to reflect a sullen and sombre tone, but Condon, through the cathartic creation process, manifests an adeptly crafted album that’s melancholic, hopeful and uplifting. Opening with the title track, Condon’s voice basks in the beautiful orchestral backdrop that keeps building throughout the record. On Arctic Forest and several other songs, the aforementioned organ accompanied with his rich baritone harmonies brings an almost hymnal and heightened quality to the arrangements. While the impassioned So Many Plans, sonically and lyrically expresses a range of emotions from distress to acceptance. The splendid use of trumpets, lowpitched ukulele tunes, old drum machines and modular synthesisers on the album especially on tracks such as Spillhaugen, January 18th and The Tern are riveting.

Good People is the fourth studio album from Majid Jordan, an alternative R&B duo from Toronto, Canada, consisting of singer Majid Al Maskati (originally from Bahrain) and producer Jordan Ullman. Signed to OVO Sound label, they first gained exposure for writing and coproducing Drake's Hold On, We're Going Home – Majid’s backing vocals are a clear highlight of the track. Recorded in the Kingdom and Toronto, the tight nine-track album’s production incorporates soul, synthpop, new wave and neo soul elements reminiscent of their roots. While vocally and lyrically still doing what they’ve consistently done best – evoking emotions of love. The album opens with Tears In Your Eyes a heartfelt declaration of devotion to a lover. Followed by the smooth sounding Waiting For You (feat. Naomi Sharon) which is a standout. Hands Tied, a moody atmospheric bop, offers the grooviest bassline moving masterfully through the track with Majid’s vocals gently floating over it. While the gratifyingly synth-driven Violet could easily fit in alongside songs from Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories. On the closer Sunset, Majid tenderly croons as the song gracefully encapsulates the relaxed listening mood of the album. An undoubtedly good creation!

We tend not to talk about books and war in the same breath—one ranks among humanity’s greatest inventions, the other among its most terrible. But as esteemed literary historian Andrew Pettegree demonstrates, the two are deeply intertwined. The Book at War explores the various roles that books have played in conflicts throughout the globe. Winston Churchill used a travel guide to plan the invasion of Norway and, during the Cold War, both sides used books to spread propaganda. With precise historical analysis and sparkling prose, The Book at War accounts for the power – and the ambivalence – of words at war.

What We’re (Still) Talking About Breaking The Cycle

A ‘Fine’ Solution

Jokes Apart…

Gordon Ramsay is now a proud dad to six. The latest addition to the 'Ramsay Bunch' came as a surprise to fans. It might be because his oldest is 25! Moreover, it seems like only yesterday that Oscar Ramsay came long. That being said, we have no doubt that the Michelin-starred, celebrity chef is going to be a wonderful father – not perfect (but then, who is!) but wonderful; and quite a hands-on one

The festive season is upon us and that means we will see a surge in food waste in the weeks to come. According to a recent news report, the UAE is considering imposing fines on household food waste. The mechanism will be similar to how you pay for water or electricity. The head of Ne'ma, National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, believes that's

Mathew Perry’s death has shocked and saddened fans word wide. Famous for his role as Chandler Bing in the TV series Friends, the actor was known for his sense of humour, both on and off set. While many have their reasons for not approving of his jokes featured on the show, you can’t deny that ‘being funny was Mathew’s thing’.

at that. After all, his public interactions with his children are endearing to say the least. It's amazing when a person manages to break generational trauma cycles. Despite having a dysfunctional relationship with his own father, which he has discussed openly, especially in his 2006 autobiography Humble Pie, Gordon, it seems, has always tried his best to be the dad he never had – anyone who thinks otherwise is just an 'idiot sandwich'!

the only way people will be more conscious. This isn't the first move of its kind. Remember in 2018 when Saudi announced a draft law that would fine restaurant goers 20% of the bill for leftovers? Given the staggering figures for global food waste and malnutrition, it's about time these proposals were put into action. The world, after all, has enough for our need and not for our greed!

Funnily enough, the actor was told off by a teacher who said that he would never amount to anything if he kept joking around all the time. When Perry appeared on the cover of People magazine, he sent that teacher a copy (burn!). It’s a great lesson for all of us to own who we really are and never give up on it. As Dr. Seuss said, ‘there’s no one alive who is youer than you’.
