TALES OF LOVE Love is in the air and this month we wanted to show our love by bringing your romantic tales to life on our pages. Here are some of your wild and wonderful love stories that left our hearts fluttering.

Alexandra Novik-Khamis and Ali Khamis Love story of Alexa and Ali ❤ In the realm of art, where creativity knows no bounds, our love story unfolded like a captivating masterpiece. It was at an art event that our paths serendipitously crossed. As I stood there, I noticed a figure in the crowd, his eyes reflecting the same passion that fuelled my artistic soul. He, a talented professional goalkeeper from Bahrain, and I, a Russian artist, were drawn together by the magnetic pull of art. Our shared love for creativity became the foundation upon which our relationship blossomed. From that moment on, we embarked on a journey where art and love intertwined. Through art, we found a language that transcended any cultural barriers, allowing our love to flourish in the most beautiful and authentic way. “Our love story is a testament to the power of love's embrace, bridging the gaps between nations and cultures.” Sara Ali S and M.❤. Has it really been 30 years? It just seems like yesterday. He’s a fresher, boring, studious engineer. Me a sassy, classy, university fresher with head and hair in the air. Our fathers were best friends, so when M had his first posting in an oil company in our hometown, my father was appointed his guardian and he was always at ours for home cooked meals. Always in his blue blazer. We were poles apart – just like Bollywood - Hollywood, jazz music - Indian classical music, hardcore vegetarian - hardcore non-vegetarian. That's right, we really didn't bond on anything at all. But, as they say, opposites attract and these two opposites did attract and how! “The beautiful promises we made to each other on the first day of our wedding manifested true, leading to a beautiful life beyond dreams”. Kássia Tarsis Retagi and João Lucas Roque It’s honestly the most unconventional ‘meet cute’! We met during the peak of COVID (very unromantic) and I (Tarsis) was the one who slid into his DMs and started the whole thing. I came across his page on TikTok, loved his content (he did art content, like drawing, etc) and decided to follow him on Instagram. He ended up following me back and we started, slowly but surely, interacting with one another, talking more and more until we finally exchanged numbers. We eventually met in person for a coffee, a supposedly short encounter that ended up being hours. I can still remember what he was wearing – a grey buttondown shirt and jeans. “This happened in 2020, we’re now married, living in Bahrain and expecting our first baby. I am the happiest I’ve ever been and I’m pretty sure he is too ”. 28

PRESENTS WITH PRESENCE We all love nice surprises, right? It’s time to spoil your loved one but, truly, flowers and chocolates for the ladies and after shave for the guys are a bit passé. We’ve come up with some novel gift ideas sure to bring a smile to the face of both long-term partners and new love interests.

Sock It To ‘Em There’s nothing worse than cold feet. Make sure they’ll always think of you with warmth by gifting them socks bearing your very own lovely face – but that doesn’t mean you should let them walk all over you! There are loads online but we particularly like the colour of these. GO: Find them at etsy.com/listings/1543973395

You’re My Star If you want to make a lasting impression, why not name a star after the object of your affections. That way, whenever they gaze at the heavens, they’ll be reminded of you. The Online Star Registry allows you to do just that and there’s even an app where you can see your star as well as the option for a customised certificate. GO: Visit osr.org for more information.

Getting Serious If you want to show you care but just not too much, keep things light-hearted with this rather cool spoon. If in doubt, you can always say it was just a joke! GO: Find it at etsy.com/listing/1134228585 Heavenly Meetings Sticking with the star theme, what better way to commemorate your fateful first meeting than with an astronomically certified map of the heavens showing the position of the stars on your special day – you can even order it in a heart shape. Can’t remember when and were you met? Then use the details of another significant time in your relationship. GO: Visit underluckystars.com for more information.

Power of Positivity Sometimes our loved ones just need to know that we have faith in them, after all, love’s supposed to be about supporting each other when the chips are down. Get the message across with the Positive Potato - we absolutely adore this funny little guy, so if anyone’s looking for a gift idea for us, he’d be very welcome in the FACT office. he Global automotive brand, BYD, has been steadily growing from strength to strength and, over the years, has successfully pivoted from combustion vehicles to battery electric models and plug-in hybrids. BYD achieved a major production milestone by being the first auto manufacturer globally to roll out six million electric vehicles. It has also gone on to become the leader in electric vehicle sales after a massively successful 2023. Among BYD’s notable offerings is its flagship electric saloon, the BYD HAN BEV (battery electric vehicle). The model gets its name from the illustrious Han Dynasty, whose reign is renowned as being a Golden Age in Chinese history. With such an impressive introduction, we were only too thrilled when the team at Fakhro Motors gave us the chance to put the 2024 BYD HAN through its paces.

Dynamic Exterior Design As we set our sights on the vehicle, we were immediately impressed by the striking outline of the HAN. Aimed towards the premium luxury saloon market, the model has been expertly designed by the renowned German car designer Wolfgang Egger and his world-class team – and it shows! Inspired by the Chinese dragon, the new BYD HAN exudes a sporty attitude, with stylish aesthetics from the Orient. At the front, the impressive LED headlights, which BYD refers to as ‘streamers’, have a futuristic feel and create a dramatic blend of technology and beauty. The sides effectively accentuate the model’s elegant lines and the concealed door handles gracefully extend, when needed. The car boasts a confident appearance as it sits imposingly on 19-inch alloy wheels. Moving to the rear, the sleek body contours are punctuated by a sporty, sloped back and the unique ‘Dragon Claw’ full width LED rear combination light bar creates an eye-catching and highly recognisable statement.

Luxurious Interior Stepping into the car, it didn’t take us long to notice that the excellent exterior is perfectly complemented by a luxurious interior crafted with exceptional materials to bring an air of sophistication to the space. Upholstered in premium Nappa leather, we found the ventilated seats ultra-comfortable. The driver’s seat and the front passenger seat offer convenient eight- and six-way electric adjustment, respectively, with poweroperated four-way lumbar support available for both. The refined appearance is further elevated with ambient lighting, darker wooden trims and aluminium accents. Additionally, we found the sleek gear selector to be aptly functional, with physical buttons for switching between driving modes and a visually pleasing design. Space wise, there’s ample head, shoulder and leg room for all passengers. The panoramic sunroof invites natural light, creating an open and airy atmosphere in the cabin, while the luggage compartment, with a storage capacity of 410 litres, can house a couple of suitcases with ease.

High-End Infotainment & Technology The car’s infotainment system is clean and minimal in design. For the driver, there is a five-inch instrument display and a head-up display projector on the windshield that helps maintain focus on 46

the road. But what truly caught our eye was the central 15.6-inch multimedia touchscreen that can be rotated for use in portrait or landscape mode. Well designed and easy to navigate, using it while driving around was an easy and pleasant experience. A wireless charging pad and USB ports allow convenient smartphone charging while on the move. The vehicle is further set up with a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system that provides immersive sound quality and clarity that we truly enjoyed.

Imposing Power & Performance After exploring and getting better acquainted with the various exterior and interior aspects of the model, we were raring to see the HAN’s performance on the road. Equipped with an advanced system that uses an 85.4kWh battery, it provides an impressive range of up to 521km on a single charge. This is possible due to BYD’s gamechanging Blade Battery that has passed a series of extreme tests in rigorous conditions making it one of the world’s safest. Even in the case of overload, overheating, crushing or piercing and during the rigorous ‘nail penetration test’, the battery produced neither smoke nor flame and the surface temperature only reached 30 to 60°C.

And, when it comes to powering up the vehicle, its 120kW DC fast charging is truly reliable. In ideal conditions, the battery can be quickly recharged from 30% to 80% within 30 minutes. Moreover, the HAN's aerodynamic design is a perfect balance for speed, endurance and range. Highly responsive when pushed, the model goes from 0-100km/h in just 3.9 seconds. The electric all-wheel drive operates spectacularly in real time, providing superb traction control. But when called upon, the integrated brake control system reacts on command by effectively reducing brake response time.

Our Verdict Integrating the most advanced technologies in the electric vehicle industry, this latest BYD HAN model boasts stylish craftsmanship expertly combined with formidable performance. ✤

ELECTRIC RENEWAL Porsche introduce the new all-electric Macan 4 and Macan Turbo.

A decade since its debut, the Porsche Macan is stepping into its second generation with an all-new electric form. The new Macan 4 and Macan Turbo redefine the SUV segment with their progressive design, outstanding Porsche performance, exceptional long-distance range and high everyday practicality. On the occasion of the world premiere in Singapore, Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, said: “We are taking the Macan to a completely new level – with exceptional E-Performance, the new driver experience and a very impressive design.” Porsche exclusively uses the latest generation of PSM electric motors on the front and rear axles to achieve excellent efficiency. The Macan 4 produces up to 300kW (408 PS) when used in conjunction with Launch Control, while the Macan Turbo soars up to 470kW (639 PS). The cars produce maximum torque of 650Nm and 1,130Nm, respectively. The Macan 4 boasts acceleration from 0-100km/h in 5.2 seconds, while the Macan Turbo takes just 3.3 seconds. The two models achieve top speeds of 220km/h and 260km/h, respectively. The models are powered by a pioneering 800-volt Premium Platform Electric architecture. capacity of 100kWh, of which up to 95kWh can be actively used. With a DC charging output of up to 270kW, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 21 minutes at a suitable fast-charging station. At 400-volt charging stations, a high-voltage switch in the battery enables bank charging by effectively splitting the 800-volt battery into two. Up to 240kW of energy can be recuperated via the electric motors while driving. The Integrated Power Box (IPB) also contributes to the efficiency of the new Macan models, while also saving weight and space. The combined WLTP (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure) range is up to 613km in the Macan 4 and up to 591km in the Macan Turbo. Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, said: “The new Macan is clearly recognisable by its brand identity as part of the Porsche product family. The classic Porsche proportions have been further developed and optimally adapted to the challenges of an electric vehicle. This has further heightened the sporty, modern and dynamic appearance of the Macan.” ✤ GO: CALL PORSCHE CENTRE BAHRAIN ON 1745 9911 OR VISIT WWW.PORSCHE.COM/MIDDLE-EAST/_BAHRAIN FOR MORE INFORMATION.

5 OVER 5 •

Firstly, congratulations on your new role as GM of Audi Bahrain. Bahrain’s passenger cars market has grown exponentially over the years. What innovative strategies or initiatives is Audi planning to introduce in 2024 to address customer demand? Thank you. In the next two years, we will see Audi announce 20 new models including their variants and I am excited that I will be able to introduce these into Bahrain. I am also looking forward to being engaged in strengthening the charging infrastructure here for the evolving EV market and our electric vehicle range. You’ve had more than 20 years’ experience in the luxury automotive industry, what’s your secret to success and management style? I am of the opinion that we are all as important as each other in our business; we simply perform different roles. The success I have had in the industry has come from working together with the team to create the best culture and environment for staff and our customers. Empowering staff to make decisions and grow in the business builds strength and I take pride in seeing my team develop. Having started out as a trainee myself, in 2004, I understand how important this can be.

It’s been almost six months since you came to the island. What are you most enjoying about Bahrain? People are truly kind here – the sincereness of those I have met, offering to support me and my family to settle in, is a testament to the nature of those living in Bahrain. My wife, Jo, and daughters, Evie and Connie, joined me at the end of January and, as we are a close family, I am looking forward to getting out and about to explore more together. If you were to compare your personality with one of the Audi cars, which model would you most likely be and why? I would compare myself to the Q8 E-tron as my mind can be very fast-paced but I like to go about my day efficiently and effectively. Which car are you driving at the moment and what’s on your music playlist? I have been fortunate to drive the RS7 this week and this vehicle demonstrates phenomenal engineering. The presence of the car on the road is stunning. Black Coffee is on my playlist: It was great to see him recently in Bahrain too. ✤ fact magazine

VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN •

How have your Mexican upbringing and the rich culinary traditions of your family influenced your approach to cooking and how do you incorporate these elements into your dishes? When I cook, I consider more than just my Mexican heritage. I'm thankful that I've had the chance to work in a variety of places and with a wide range of people with different backgrounds, all of whom have influenced the way I cook. I prepare dishes using a range of ingredients and cooking styles – things that I saw or experienced for the first time during my trips and places I worked. My passion for baking is definitely influenced by my family. My grandfather was a baker and one of my childhood memories is seeing him baking in the stone oven in our backyard. You've worked for many prestigious hotel brands in Mexico. How have these experiences shaped your cooking style and what unique elements do you bring to the kitchen at Downtown Rotana? I started my career in Mexico, but I would say my cooking style was formed while I was away. Being a Mexican chef outside of Mexico means a lot to me because I represent my culture and heritage.

In Downtown Rotana, I am bringing some of the Mexican dishes that match our food concepts, such as ceviches and tacos, in the pool bar menu and the live Mexican food station at The Village Brunch, where guests can find me most of the time. I am very proud of my Mexican heritage and it is something that I like to share with everyone. With the ever-evolving culinary landscape, how do you stay updated on food trends and what steps do you take to keep your menu fresh and exciting? I keep myself up to date with cooking applications, websites and, of course, trends on social media. I am also inspired by the talents of other fellow chefs who I have worked with. As a seasoned chef with a diverse culinary background, can you share the inspiration behind your signature dish at Downtown Rotana and what makes it uniquely yours? My signature dish is tuna ceviche filled with flavour, fresh ingredients and memories of home. It’s my mum's favourite dish, making it very unique to me. Every time I prepare it, it takes me back home. ✤ fact magazine

A DELIGHTFUL LEBANESE ADVENTURE Liz O’Reilly visited Byblos, the gorgeous new restaurant at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay, for an evening of refined Lebanese dining.

yblos sits on the hotel’s private beach and we arrive at the restaurant through the lush garden. I am immediately impressed with the décor with atmospheric lighting, including tiki-style lamps flickering on the beach and fairy lights on the tables. White wicker seating is adorned with deep turquoise cushions and the atmosphere is festive with the sliding glass doors opening to the elements on a beautifully breezy evening. Perhaps the most stunning aspect is the view, with Byblos gazing across the dark water to the glittering Manama skyline, a vista that’s enjoyed from every table and also from the separate outdoor garden hookah area. We settle to enjoy the sounds of a DJ playing light electronic music and first to the table is a selection of appetisers, including hummus, muhammara, Warak Enab (stuffed vine leaves), pumpkin mutabal – slightly sweet and definitely my favourite – and Mafroutkit Tajen – a mix of tahini, thyme, raisins, nuts and onions. I’ve not had this before and really enjoy the inclusion of sweet raisins among the other savoury elements. Stuffed vine leaves are a dish I usually avoid, there’s just something about the look of the dark green leaves that really puts me off. However, this is the Four Seasons, it's a Lebanese signature appetiser and I already love Chef Tony El Khoury’s food, so I decide to give it a try. I’m not disappointed. Sharply lemony from the simmering of the leaves, the rice, tomato, onion and mint mix is surprisingly tasty – surely the seven-spice blend has worked its magic, offering very faint hints of the sweetness of cinnamon coupled with earthy turmeric. An absolute joy for the taste buds. A Beetroot Carpaccio is so pretty to look at that it seems, almost, a sin to tuck in. But eat it we do, and with great relish. The sweetness of the beet makes a delicious contrast to salty feta and smoky walnuts, while mixed leaves have the whole concoction bursting with the tart goodness of fresh, garden produce. We are served a good selection of hot mezzes and I immediately zone in on the mini arayes. Generously stuffed, the meat kofta boasts delicate and delicious seasoning, leaving a lingering sense of warmth and the fried pitta imparts a wonderful crispy texture. The kibbeh balls take this humble option to the next level – the firm crust on the outside giving way to a flavourful and fluffy interior, I could honestly eat only these and the pumpkin mutabal and be quite happy. The batata harra – spicy potatoes – are a great favourite for me, no matter which cuisine I find them in. They arrive at the table piping hot and wonderfully crunchy, their coating redolent of peppers, garlic and chilli and deeply satisfying. A manakish chicken shawarma is deliciously garlicky, a different take on the popular street food and oh so moreish. I love the pairing with mozzarella, which adds a great depth to the flavour combination, and the lightness of the flat bread ensures it doesn’t interfere with the following dishes. Next up is Shrimp Fattah. I’ve lived in the Middle East a lot of years, but I think this is the first time I have encountered this particular dish. I am bowled over. Composed of shrimps, eggplant, garlic yoghurt and coriander with pine nuts and fried bread, it is superb. The sparky tanginess of the yoghurt blends beautifully with the smoky aubergine in a rich, almost creamy, sauce that perfectly complements the sweetness of the seafood. The pinenuts give a 68

delightful earthy touch alongside the crispy fried bread. Our first main is the mixed grill and I think I can honestly say I have never eaten better lamb chops. Using the highest quality Australian meat, they are thick and deliciously succulent, the outer lightly charred, the inner delicately pink with the juices running. Served on a mini table grill, the shish tawouk is also of excellent quality, the familiar flavours bursting forth, while the meat tikka brings a delicately spicy flavour to the mix and is, again, beautifully tender to the bite. However, for me, the Lamb Shank Ouzi is the standout dish of the evening. My dining companion even declares it comparable to that prepared by his late Lebanese mother-in-law, high praise indeed. Wrapped in a roasted bread case, our server takes great pride in cutting it open at the table, releasing a wonderful aromatic steam that tells of hours of slow cooking, rendering the shank meat so tender as to literally fall from the bone. The ouzi rice with ground beef bears a deliciously subtle spice blend, no single taste overpowering the others but instead coming together to form a splendidly rich combination speaking of years of history, with mixed nuts adding an earthy crunch. Served with gravy and yoghurt, it is a dish we both go back to several times, each mouthful a symphony of tastes and textures, deeply rewarding for us diners and, I’m sure, for our talented chef. The finale of our grand repast is Kunafa – the warm, golden baked cheese dessert topped with pistachios and served with ice cream. A sight to behold, it looks amazing but, alas, with all that has gone before, I simply do not have an ounce of space left. That famous dessert stomach – the one that always has room for a little something sweet – has completely deserted me. But perhaps this sad failing is for the best, since I now have even more excuse for a return visit. Byblos and Chef Tony, thank you. I shall be back soon. ✤

t’s commonly said, “don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today”, and more often than not these suggestions work adequately for situations ranging from both work to fun. So, when I found myself invited to experience the famous Night Brunch at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain, I immediately said yes! Held on Thursday evenings instead of the typical Friday afternoons, once there, you quickly realise it’s an ingeniously simple concept that works wonderfully post wrapping up a hectic work week. As my companions and I entered Silk’s restaurant, where the brunch is hosted, we were warmly greeted by the Food and Beverage Outlets Manager, Yasser Akdawi, and shown to our seats. The expansive dining area offers ample seating suitable for small and large parties. Dimly lit with elegant décor, the space effortlessly exudes a laid-back atmosphere. Not willing to waste any time, we soon left our tables to tour the abundant banquet. Impressively spanning preparations from Japanese to Mexican, Italian and various other cuisines, we were truly in for a treat. Another highlight of this brunch is the dedicated beverage counter that serves a range of specially crafted drinks. Raring to go, I kicked things off with a bowl of French onion soup. Rich, savoury and deeply flavourful, this stunning union of caramelised onions and delicious beef broth was impeccably done. Served alongside a toasted baguette covered with melty, golden-brown cheese, every bite dipped in the soup was soul soothing. We were off to a great start! I then moved on to the salad section – comprising the most varied options, there was something for everyone here, from flavours to textures. Colourful and eye-catching, I found a vibrant mix of cooked and raw veggies, proteins, herbs, various dressings and much more. I picked the fresh cherry tomatoes served with mozzarella dollops and a portion of grilled artichokes topped with a poached egg that was covered in olive oil and a balsamic dressing. I also tasted a spoonful of the lush and creamy pumpkin hummus, which was absolutely sublime. As I made my way back to the table, my plate still had plenty of room to spare. I looked around and immediately spotted the vast selection of exotic cheeses and cold cuts that sat immaculately presented. I gladly indulged in quite a few. I then visited the chilled seafood bar that was well stocked with shrimp, lobster tails, mussels and crabs. On a nearby standalone display was the most aesthetically pleasing sushi selection boasting several different varieties to choose from. My dining partners and I particularly enjoyed the freshness and tenderness of the tuna sashimi. On my subsequent trip, I checked out the live grilling section, from where I tried a delightful chicken satay and fish skewer – cooked ideally, they both had a mildly spicy taste, which I liked. As my eyes scanned for the next appetising morsel, I spotted the inviting Mexican food station at which I opted for a freshly prepared hard-shell shrimp taco. It came with fresh vegetables and intensely flavourful piquant sauces. As I stood at the station watching the preparation, I noticed there was plenty of opportunity for customisation with a range of toppings and sauces. Post this course, we took a breather to let the food settle and to 72

appreciate the wonderful and lively ambience that had overtaken the place as the crowd steadily poured in. A special mention goes to the talented live performer, who was on a roll. She read the room well and kept the crowd enchanted with her singing and skilful saxophone playing. Reinvigorated by our break, we moved on to the main course. The first to grace my plate was the mouth-watering beef brisket. Extremely tender due to being slow cooked for hours, every bite was immensely juicy and full of flavour. I had to go back for seconds. Next up was the Grilled Sea Bass alla Siciliana. Flaky, moist and cooked to perfection, the fish was exquisitely mild and slightly sweet thanks to the fragrant tomato base, combined with a lemon and herb infusion. For the final main course, I selected a hearty New Zealand Angus ribeye steak from several other delectable cuts that were temptingly on display. Cooked on a large flame grill, the meat was prepared to medium-rare perfection. You’re free to embellish as you please, with various sauces and accompaniments available. I opted for some roasted rosemary potatoes from the buffet, along with mushroom and peppercorn sauce. With minimal room left to spare, the final stop on our culinary journey was the dessert station. We sampled the crème brûlée, mango parfait, chocolate mousse, raspberry pannacotta, baked cheesecake and the toothsome cherry Chantilly, which satisfyingly sealed the deal. Additionally, the dessert chef prepared a special berry flambé in the most theatrical manner, which was quite a sight to behold. If you really wish to jumpstart your weekend revelries in an impressive setting, while savouring delicious food, Mövenpick’s Night Brunch is the best place to be on a Thursday evening! ✤

ahrain truly is a place of diversity and culture where you can find some of the most eclectic restaurants serving up unique blends of flavours from around the globe. At FACT, we are fortunate to sample some of these culinary offerings and our latest gastronomic adventure was truly a treat. Located in Seef, within the vicinity of Seef Mall, is the recently opened Egyptian seafood flagship restaurant – Kadoura – an establishment that first got its start more than 60 years ago in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria. These exceptional, traditional Egyptian flavours have made it to the heart of Manama and can now be experienced first-hand, which is just what I did. On entering the restaurant, I was immediately impressed by the spacious layout that complemented the minimal but elegant décor. Shades of cream, off-white and turquoise tastefully coloured the space, while plenty of natural light flowing in from the large windows created a calming, seaside-like atmosphere. Once comfortably seated, the courteous staff were quick to attend to us. Perusing the menu, we were elated by the various enticing choices and styles of preparation that we were about to indulge in. But it wasn’t long before we were asked my favourite question (at any notable seafood establishment), “would you like to see the fresh catch of the day?”, to which there’s only ever one right answer – yes please! We were led to a small, airconditioned room (yes, you heard me right, not a display section but an actual room) that showcased a tempting variety of fresh fish, crustaceans and molluscs. We gladly made our choice.

FOODIE CORNERN •

Back at the table, we were first treated to a complimentary plate of crisp, salty crackers made from khubus, served with an Egyptian-style tahini – very different from the typical one we usually get in Bahrain. This had a fantastically luscious, hummuslike texture and was a lot more flavourful, with strong hints of lemon, garlic and cumin. I kept returning to it throughout the meal and unabashedly asked for more. We were then served the Kadoura Special soup, a smooth and creamy broth that had it all, from shrimp and calamari to mussels and crab – truly indulgent. Next came the starters; first up was a Rocca salad with fresh rocket leaves and juicy cherry tomatoes that paired nicely with the tangy and mildly sour feta. Then, a typical Alexandrian mixed platter comprising delicious, roasted eggplant topped with piquant spices, plump tomatoes drizzled liberally in vinegar, lemon juice and garlic and a serving of mixed pickles. The mussels arrived next – exquisitely sauteed in a highly aromatic garlic, vinegar and lemon marinade, they were tossed with mixed bell peppers that provided a much-needed hint of sweetness to balance out the sourness. I honestly can’t remember the last time I enjoyed mussels this much. We were then served a plate of fish roe and grilled jumbo shrimp. The former, lightly sauteed in lemon and butter, had a very interesting texture with a noticeable salty and umami flavour. While the latter, were grilled to perfection and doused in a special butterfly sauce that was rich and creamy but still splendidly tart due to its lemon butter elements. I also detected a hint of mustard in the mix, which certainly added that much needed kick. Rounding off the appetisers was the amazing Omani lobster. Impeccably grilled and covered in a decadent bechamel sauce and cheese, every bite was a gloriously blissful morsel.

It would be amiss not to mention the refreshing drinks that we enjoyed during our meal. I particularly relished a delicious raspberry and pineapple concoction, that was infused with mild peppery flavours, called Bur Said. Kicking off the main courses was the Tajen with red sauce and calamari. Its ravishingly thick tomato sauce, flavoured with onion and red capsicum, was cooked into a deliciously gravy. It paired excellently with the savoury Sayadiya rice, a truly unique Egyptian preparation. The standout of the meal was the Bahraini Hamour prepared in Kadoura’s Singari style of cooking that resulted in a true masterpiece. The fish was butterflied, grilled to perfection and covered with diced vegetables and spices. It was flaky yet firm, while retaining a soft bite. We finished the mains on a real high with the sea bream, prepared in the most simple way by immaculately grilling the fish with just oil and lemon. The chef’s expertise really showed here as the fish retained its delicate sweetness, while exuding an intensely lemony taste on the palate. Simply divine! Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, our table was graced by the only dessert on Kadoura’s menu – rice pudding. All it took was one spoonful and I could clearly see why. With an ultra-creamy and comforting texture, every mouthful was truly heavenly – a must try. If genuinely good seafood is what you desire, I’d gladly point you to Kadoura and wish you bon voyage! ✤

BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE

TRAVEL •

It’s the time of year when our thoughts turn to love. And what better way to enjoy togetherness than in stunning snowy scenery where snuggling together comes so naturally. YLLÄS, LAPLAND

There’s no doubt about it, in the Middle East we are most definitely children of the sun but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate the beauty and romance of a pristine snowy landscape – as long as it’s only for a holiday! And, we can think of few things more romantic than nights in a glass igloo under an endlessly starry sky where the Northern Lights dance for our entertainment. Sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? But, that’s what you get in Ylläs, Finland’s largest ski resort which boasts the country’s longest slopes and an excellent network of cross-country trails. The location of Ylläs is unique sitting between two authentic Lappish villages, giving skiers a choice of two routes to take once they leave the lift. Head one way and you will reach Äkäslompolo on the north side, go south and you will come to Ylläsjärvi. There are huts on the slopes for the all-important après ski refreshments and both villages have abundant bars and restaurants. The Glass Igloo and Aurora Cabin Excursion from inghams.co.uk offers the opportunity to sleep under thermal glass, open to the majesty of Lapland’s night sky, in a warm cosy bed. Sign us up!

Megève, France We have to admit, this is a hidden gem we’d never even heard of till we started researching this feature. Think of romantic European ski resorts and you would expect to hear about Kitzbühel or the jet-set favourites of Chamonix or Verbier. But it turns out Megève is the place to be if you like your skiing with a side of Michelin-starred food and a horse-drawn carriage ride. A great favourite with couples, ranging from 1,113m to 2,350m, Megève is a huge ski area with 235 slopes for all levels and all pleasures at the heart of the Domaine Évasion Mont-Blanc. It's 400km of secure, marked and proudly maintained slopes that guarantee exceptional skiing comfort. If you’re feeling indulgent, Megève boasts three Michelinstarred restaurants – Salt Flakes, The Alpaga Table and La Dame de Pic – Le 1920 – so, you’ll certainly not go hungry after a day on the slopes. And from rustic-chic chalets to upmarket hotels, there are plenty of places for lovers to nest. Walk hand in hand through the Mediaeval cobbled streets of the town centre and splash the cash or window shop at the many luxury boutiques and stores. Take a horse-drawn sleigh through the snowy streets to the sound of bells and hooves – don’t worry, the animals are well blanketed and wear special shoes – or browse book shops and art galleries for gorgeous mementos of your visit. And, if you’re feeling adventurous, at sunset, you can don your snowshoes and, accompanied by a guide, head to the Montagnette refuge for a gourmet dinner. Who could ask for more? 86

Whistler, Canada Known as one of North America’s most romantic and favourite ski destinations, Whistler, despite an abundance of inviting powder snow, has so much more to offer than just the slopes. Yes, you’ll have endless days of awesome skiing but the fun doesn’t stop when evening comes. There is loads to do in the twilight and under the wide-open starry skies. If you’re feeling brave, fly through the night with Ziptrek’s Winter Après Tour, which includes four separate ziplines with highest platform around 150ft above the surrounding forest floor. The slightly less adventurous can head down the mountain on a comfy tube at the Base 2 Zone on Blackcomb Mountain. The area is also well known for its superb art galleries, so make sure you bring some extra cash if you want to take home an artwork or unique jewellery piece. After you’ve worked up an appetite on the slopes, there’s no shortage of fabulous places to grab a bite, Wild Blue Restaurant Bar is said to be Michelin star worthy and Bearfoot Bistro also comes highly recommended. But, if you’re ready for a little more adventure, take a snowcat or snowmobile up the mountain for fondue at Crystal Hut, which is designated as a Canadian Signature Experience by the Canadian Tourism Commission. Percy Jackson and the Olympians Need to Know:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is an American fantasy television series airing on Disney+. A 12-year-old demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound divine powers, unexpectedly finds himself accused by the Greek God Zeus of stealing his lightning bolt. He must embark on the adventure of a lifetime to find it and restore order to Olympus.

Director: Sick Riordan Cast: Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri

Why Is It Worth Watching?

The screenplay is inspired by Brock Yates’ book Enzo Ferrari - The Man and the Machine. A hero in Italy, Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver), the man behind the spectacle of 1950s’ Formula 1, is struggling to maintain a grip on the industry he revolutionised. A major bankruptcy crisis is on the heels of the company that he and his wife built from nothing 10 years earlier. Concurrently, his marriage to Laura (Penélope Cruz) is on its last legs following the death of their son Dino, whom he adored. With everything seemingly falling to pieces, he decides to counter his losses by rolling the dice on one race – the iconic Mille Miglia. A big victory at this infamously dangerous race could finally turn Ferrari’s fortunes around but a loss could put them in the ground. It’s a risk he’s willing to take. Though an absolute visual spectacle, the electrifying performances by Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz are the major strong points of the film.

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Based on the beloved book series by Rick Riordan of the same name, this latest live-action TV adaptation (there was previously a film in 2010) comes in an eight-episode first season that follows the events of The Lightning Thief — the first book of the franchise. In this longer form format, the source material has a much better chance of developing and the characters being properly fleshed out. The show follows Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), an outcast at school who’s struggling with bullying and what he initially deems as hallucinations. After a jarring event, he learns that he’s actually the son of Poseidon, Greek God of the Sea, and a young demigod. Just as he’s wrapping his head around that, Percy is accused of stealing his uncle Zeus’ master bolt and sent on a quest to retrieve it before more trouble unravels. On the way, he’s accompanied by Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), daughter of Athena, and Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri), a satyr. This Greek mythology-infused show is a charming and fun watch that’s filled with magic, great action and neat special effects.

RAP

Saviors By Green Day

Insano By Kid Cudi

Billie Joe Armstrong sings The American Dream Is Killing Me fervently on the opening track of Green Day’s 14th studio album, Saviors. It’s been three decades since their breakout album and the veteran punkpop trio have managed to capture rare form on their latest project by opting for a more garage-rock sound compared to recent, more experimental, attempts. On Bobby Sox, the verses stay sweet and tempered, while the distorted guitars and shouted vocals unleash triumphantly on the choruses. The driving bass line and drums particularly impress on 1981, while the memorable chorus “She’s gonna bang her head like 1981” sticks with you. The breezy melody on Suzie Chapstick oozes nostalgia, especially when the backing vocals kick in and emotions are laid bare on Father to a Son as Billie sings to his two boys, apologising for his mistakes and promising to be “a lighthouse in the storm". The opening riffs on Strange Days Are Here to Stay sound reminiscent of Basket Case but it finds its own path as the song proceeds. Here he laments “ever since Bowie died, it hasn't been the same” – it would be hard not to agree.

Since his era-defining 2009 debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, Kid Cudi has been an influential voice in hip-hop. Now approaching 40 and feeling he’s given his best through previous projects, Kid considered retiring but it was while attending a Kendrick Lamar concert in Paris last year that inspiration struck and a series of events later, he announced his ninth studio album, Insano. DJ Drama’s booming voice kicks off the album with Often, I Have These Dreamz and he hosts the entirety of the 21-track LP in his signature style. Kid soon jumps in, with his laidback melodic drone effortlessly dancing across the track. The energy stays high on Keep Bouncing and Get Off Me, featuring Travis Scott. The album’s production has a strong trapheavy influence compared to previous projects, with Kid bringing upbeat performances but stepping back lyrically. We get his best vintage self on Wow with ASAP Rocky, a standout anthemic hook with a tight guest verse, and Ace of Base’s All That She Wants is surprisingly sampled on Electrowavebaby. With Cud Life, Porsche Topless and Blue Sky, it’s quite clear Kid’s having fun again and it shows.

The Hidden Life of Cecily Larson By Ellen Baker

Drama, secrets, love, loss and life in the early 20th century circus. This family saga has it all and more besides. Dropped off at an orphanage in 1924, at the tender age of four, Cecily is later sold into a travelling circus where, as a teenager, she finds love. Fast forward to 2015, she is living a quiet life when the unexpected results of a surprise DNA test throw her family’s whole history into question. Very apposite in the days of 23andMe, it promises a stonking good read.

MYSTERY, CRIME FICTION, PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

End of Story By AJ Finn

If you’re a fan of Knives Out, and who isn’t, then this is for you. With just months to live, reclusive novelist Sebastian Trapp invites detective fiction expert Nicky Hunter to “come tell my story”. That tale includes the mysterious disappearance of his first wife and son 20 years earlier. When a corpse turns up in the family’s koi pond, Nicky and Sebastian’s daughter discover the past is just waiting to reemerge. fact magazine

What We’re (Still) Talking About Puppy Love

Love Actually

Love Languages

If you’ve been living under a rock, you might have missed all the hype around the US NFC championship game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions. Both sides had a lot to lose with a place in the Super Bowl up for grabs. We were rooting for the Lions – family ties, don’t hate us – but the

The British Royal Family has been in the wars of late with King Charles III undergoing prostate surgery and Catherine Princess of Wales needing a scheduled abdominal operation that necessitated a 13-day hospital stay. Unsurprisingly the UK press had a field day, playing up the closeness of the two’s relationship since he actually visited her – shock horror. And there were reports of

Hands up if you’ve come across that phrase or even the book from which it’s drawn, The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts. Yep, it’s true, most of us have heard of it and we even wrote about it a few years ago trying to give some insight into the premise that there are, indeed, five love languages - compliments, quality time, gifts, acts of service and physical touch – and looking at how they can be

Prince William going into “full dad” scaling back engagements and stepping up to take on the school run. There were, of course, the antimonarchists who accused the King and Princess of slacking and making the most of their medical conditions to get out of work. Honestly, it seems these two can’t do right for doing wrong in some eyes. But perhaps that’s down to the media obsession with them. After all, man visits sick daughter-in-law and dad does the school run while mum’s in hospital – not exactly ‘hold the front page’ is it? That’s just love actually.

incorporated into modern relationships. The 1992 book by preacher Gary Chapman was an international best seller and seemed to suggest that you could only experience lasting love if you were attuned with your partner’s particular ‘love language’. It always seemed a bit odd but, hey ho, whatever floats your boat and, if it means more presents, then well and good. However, now there’s been some actual scientific study that shows we, as humans, need all sorts of aspects to nurture love. What researchers describe as ‘a balanced diet’ rather than sticking to just one way of expressing our affection. Well, who’d have thought it?

49ers were victorious and, since we heard this little tale (pun totally intended), we can see why and have even changed allegiance. It seems that, in the run up to the big game, the San Franciso players got a visit from some pups from the Humane Society of Silicon Valley. There was much de-stressing puppy love and social media presence, hopefully helping to find the needy canines their forever homes. Looks like the good karma worked for the 49ers. 106 fact magazine
