Bahrain has topped the list of places most suitable for expats looking to move.

The Kingdom ranked first on the list of locations that offer a smooth transition to people moving from other countries, according to the Expat Essentials Index report by InterNations, the world’s largest expat network with over 4.5 million members. The index is part of their annual Expat Insider survey. For the 2022 edition, information from 11,970 foreigners of 177 nationalities and living in 181 countries or territories was collected. The responses were based on factors such as administration, digital life, housing and language that play an important role in getting life started abroad. Bahrain, the UAE, Singapore, Estonia, Oman, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kenya and Canada are the countries that had the best performance overall . Bahrain secured first place out of 52 nations. In relation to administration, 67% revealed that it is easy to deal with the local authorities, an impressive 27 percentage points more than the global average of40%. With respect to visas, 70% said it was easy to get a visa to move here in comparison to 56% globally.

When it came to digital life, Bahrain ranked in the top 10 for the availability of government services online.

As per the report, the majority of the expats in Bahrain (82%) noted that it was easy for them to find housing, while only about half of expats globally (54%) can say the same. However, only 39% found housing in Bahrain affordable, the same share as the worldwide average (39%). More than 80% of expats on the island claimed that it is easy to live in the Kingdom without speaking the local language, in comparison to 51% globally. The culmination of favourable conditions based on these crucial elements when it comes to moving countries led to Bahrain achieving the top ranking. ✤ GO: VISIT WWW.INTERNATIONS.ORG FOR MORE INFORMATION.

NO PLACE LIKE HERE!

Former Bahrain resident, Natasha Burge has released her memoir, Drifts, in which she addresses life in the Gulf region, autism and more.

Drifts is a memoir that explores autism and trans-cultural identity set against the backdrop of the Arabian Gulf. Written in a riveting prose poetry style, it has many chapters that are set in Bahrain, that feature some of Natasha’s favourite places on the island: Muharraq, the Manama Souq, the Dilmun Burial Mounds and the Qal’at al Bahrain Fort.

Natasha's family has lived in the Gulf for more than 60 years. She says: “I attended high school for two years in Bahrain and lived there again after university. Bahrain is one of the most special places I've ever known. It has a rich, ancient history, a vibrant cultural scene and friendly people who go out of their way to make you feel welcome. It is a place like no other.”

In Drifts, Natasha wanted to highlight the diverse cultures of the island and its long trans-cultural history. A Saudi-born American writer, in Natasha’s eyes, what sets Bahrain, and the Gulf in general, apart from the rest of the world, is that for so many millennia the region has been a crossroads of cultures. This has given so many elements of life here, from language and architecture to food and music, an indelibly unique flavour.

We celebrate Autism Awareness Day on April 2, which makes it an ideal time to pick up this book. Drifts also talks about Natasha’s late diagnosis with autism – at the age of 37 – after a lifetime of issues with severe anxiety. She says: “We are now learning that autism does not just look like the stereotypes of the condition, but actually can be expressed and experienced in a vast variety of ways. For women especially, who are good at ‘masking’ their difficulties, diagnosis is often missed. The more awareness there is about how different autism can be to the stereotypes, the more people who can find support. A diagnosis brings self-knowledge which is empowering.”

Drifts can be ordered via Amazon UK, Waterstones, Book Depository, among other places. Published by Footnote Press, it’s also available in bookstores in the UK. ✤

A NEW HOME

Plans are in progress for the development of a new pet park with a capacity to shelter 5,000 strays.

Bahrain is home to many individuals and some groups including shelters that are working toward the betterment of strays. Animal-lovers in the Kingdom have been operating as a community by physically going to various locations and rescuing, donating cash, paying vet bills, providing food and medicine or even donating pre-loved items to thrift stores run by shelters.

Now, another initiative is in the pipeline, which will further strengthen this movement of kindness toward strays, in this case dogs. A new park will be built in Askar and is expected to cover an area of 50,000sq/m, which, on completion, would provide the canines a better dwelling space and help take them off the streets and residential areas.

Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister H.E. Eng. Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak recently announced that a plot of land has been registered to accommodate this project and efforts are being made to determine the necessary budget.

The animals picked up from around the Kingdom will first be sterilised and then housed at the facility, which will also include play spaces with chairs and walkways for visitors who can

interact with the dogs.

The support of the government backing existing efforts to take care of strays is invaluable especially considering the rising stray population. Although local authorities have taken control measures to keep the country rabies-free, the steady rise in the numbers over the past few years has become a cause of concern particularly in certain areas. This initiative looks to address this situation in addition to providing the stray dogs a dedicated safe place to relocate to.

It's worth mentioning that concerns have been raised pertaining to the size of the park – if it’s big enough to accommodate the animals and how they might react to being confined to an enclosed space – something they aren’t used to. We will have to wait and watch how this feedback is incorporated into the design going forward. That being said, the project itself is a great start! ✤

IMPECCABLE SERVICE AND HOSPITALITY

Bahrain International Airport (BIA) received dual honours at the World Airport Awards from Skytrax.

The ceremony was held at the 2023 Passenger Terminal Expo in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Operating since 2000, the World Airport Awards are the most prestigious accolades for the industry, voted for by customers in the largest annual global airport customer satisfaction survey.

Gulf Air Group Chairman H.E. Zayed Al Zayani and Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah accepted the awards – World’s Best Airport for Baggage Delivery and Best Airport Staff in Middle East – at the presentation ceremony. The accolades are the latest in a long list of achievements for BIA, which continues to cement its position among the world’s leading airports.

Speaking on the win, H.E. Zayed Al Zayani said: “We are honoured to be recognised for the quality of our services and our commitment to ensuring that all passengers enjoy a hasslefree travel experience. BIA is the central asset of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s aviation sector, which receives great support from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and benefits from the close follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister. “Awards such as these demonstrate the efficacy of our aviation strategy and reinforce our position as a leading regional and global aviation hub. Backed by state-of-the-art facilities and a highly-skilled team dedicated to providing the highest levels of service, BIA celebrates Bahrain’s rich heritage and spotlights our warm hospitality to the world.”

This comes on the back of BAC's recent win at the Aviation Achievement Awards 2023 where it was named Airport Operator of the Year in the Medium-Sized Airports category. It was also presented with the Aviation Sustainability Award for Airports and honoured for Health & Safety Initiative of the Year

in Business Aviation.

Mr Al Binfalah remarked: “The baggage handling department plays a key role in making the airport experience as seamless as possible for passengers through a highly integrated process with our partners. Although passengers may not see all the hard work and attention to detail that goes into this process, we are pleased that they appreciate a job well done.

“While our advanced facilities play a key role, having an outstanding team is crucial to deliver a safe, efficient and memorable airport experience. Customers are at the centre of our daily operations and wherever their onward journeys take them, our goal is to ensure the time they spend at BIA is convenient and enjoyable.” ✤

GRATITUDE & CELEBRATION

We’re well into the Holy Month, a time to experience the peace and joy of sharing and sacrifice. We’re also eagerly awaiting Eid al-Fitr when we will celebrate and give thanks. In this feature, we bring local charities you can support, gifting ideas for Eid and travel escapes for the long festive weekend.

fact magazine 31

A SLICE OF KINDNESS

The Holy Month is a good time to remind ourselves of how blessed we are. Further, it’s a time to share our blessings with those around us. In fact, zakat or almsgiving is one of the pillars of Islam and a common Ramadan tradition. These Bahrain-based charities have initiatives where you can pay it forward.

A BOX FORWARD

A Box Forward operates as a Facebook group where people can donate old items and those in need or struggling can request them. They launched in February this year and since then have amassed 1,500 donors giving away items such as clothing, furniture, baby things and food. For Ramadan, A Box Forward encourages to donate more than ever especially food and baby items such as diapers that are most requested by needy families. Additionally, they will focus heavily on supporting their sister charity, A Box of Goodness, that is doing its annual food drive. Visit @aboxforward on Facebook and Instagram for more information.

KAAF HUMANITARIAN

Kaaf Humanitarian is a charity initiative that works toward offering help across various avenues, from providing food, water and shelter to education and training and everything in between. They even offer assistance in financing commercial projects for people with limited incomes. For Ramadan this year, they have three major categories that you can support – Iftar, Ramadan Basket and Printing Quran. The Iftar initiative allows you to provide Iftar meals to thousands in Bahrain and outside the country. Just BD10 can go a long way, feeding 10 fasting individuals. You could also fund a Ramadan Basket for needy families in Bahrain, which contains a variety of food products. There are two types of baskets – a comprehensive one for BD50 and a basic one for BD20. Prayer is an important part of not just the Holy Month but much beyond that. You can donate toward the printing of Qurans, which will be distributed in mosques among other areas. It costs just BD1 to print one Quran. You can get more information and donate through their website www.kaaf.bh

A BOX OF GOODNESS

As every year, A Box Of Goodness is collecting and distributing dry, non-perishable food items to needy families and individuals in the Kingdom: rice, dates, flour, dal, green gram, chickpeas, oil, sago, spices, pasta, noodles, sugar, milk powder, tea, coffee, ghee, coconut milk powder, tomato paste, jelly, custard or canned foods. Drop-off locations for donations will be at Bahrain Rugby Football Club in Saar, Nadeen School in Adliya, all Costa Coffee outlets across the Kingdom and at some other locations which will be revealed through contact. Donations for this campaign are welcome until April 20. Visit @aboxofgoodness on Instagram for more information.

DOOBI

doobi is a digital laundry service in Bahrain. They are known for their doobi Cares initiative, in collaboration with Alsanabel Orphan Care Society, which empowers customers to give back by donating pre-loved clothes and plastics to be recycled. For the Holy Month, they’re launching their Ramadan doobi Cares challenge. To participate, users will have to consistently donate at least four times during Ramadan for a chance to win free access to the doobi Pro monthly subscription. Through this campaign, they hope to motivate a larger audience to pay it forward and raise awareness about how we can each make a difference together. Learn more @getdoobi on Instagram

PAKISTANI WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION

Established in 1998, Pakistani Women’s Association (PWA) is an active charitable association, working for social and welfare causes. They have launched their Ramadan and Eid initiative Spread A Smile, where the community can come together to bring a smile to the faces of those in need. You can donate new or pre-loved clothes in good condition. You will need to pack and label then with the gender and size. You can get more information on where to drop off your packages by messaging @p_w_a_bahrain on Instagram. Last year, PWA did a food drive for the Holy Month. They also organise other successful charity campaigns throughout the year.

TREE OF LIFE CHARITY SOCIETY

Founded in 2012, the Tree of Life Social Charity Society’s services focus on orphans, deprived families, health care and social welfare. Every year, they have an extensive Ramadan schedule where they distribute gift packages and invite needy families and orphans for weekly Iftars. They also host a variety of activities in parks from Quran readings to poetry and painting competitions and henna. This year, they’ve distributed aid to hundreds of families registered with the association, which consists of Ramadan baskets, food coupons and more, in addition to other programmes. EID ESCAPES

With a long weekend coming up to mark the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, many of us will be thinking of travel. These nearby destinations offer a change of scene, with beaches, culture, shopping, sight-seeing and more.

GEORGIA

Georgia offers the ideal quick get-away, with direct flights to Tbilisi International Airport. A great starting point, the capital city is home to Tbilisi Botanical Garden, which blooms in spring. There are thousands of native and global varieties of plants, as well as waterfalls to explore.

If you’re extending your holiday into early May, then you must not miss the annual grape festival – Georgia is known for its grapes. More than 100 merchants present their many varieties and you can also enjoy a food market and live music.

Visit the resort town of Borjomi, which is about two hours from Tbilisi. It’s famous for its centuries-old mineral springs that are said to have healing properties. There are many hotels and resorts that offer spa services – a great way to unwind.

Nature and adventure lovers will enjoy exploring BorjomiKharagauli National Park, where many cultural and educational tours are organised. You can also hike and camp at assigned sites. Board the Kukushka train or Borjomi-Bakuriani railway, one of the first railways in Georgia dating back to the late 19th century. Sit back and enjoy sweeping views of the nature-clad foothills of the Caucasus Mountains range.

Located about five hours from Borjomi, Batumi, the Black Sea capital of Georgia, is home to beautiful beaches and offers bustling nightlife.

EGYPT

Tourists flock Egypt at this time of the year. However, if you don’t mind a bit of a crowd, you can experience great weather – bright and sunny but not too hot. Take a direct flight to Cairo International Airport. Start off with a relaxing felucca – traditional Egyptian sail boat – cruise on the Nile, which offers beautiful views of this capital city.

It would be shameful not to visit the pyramids and the Great Sphinx at Giza, which is about a 10-minute drive from Cairo. We recommend going at night when there are relatively fewer people. Book your spot for the Sound and Light show when these wonderous structures are lit up, showcasing the rich pharaonic history from the mouths of the rulers themselves.

Interact with the locals at Khan el-Khalili market. It’s one of the oldest with foundations dating back to the 14th century. Teaming with vendors selling traditional fabrics, jewellery and other items, it’s a great place to shop especially for souvenirs. Make a pitstop at a traditional coffee house, enjoy the local street food or simply unwind with a hookah. A caveat: weekends can get crowded and make sure you are ready to bargain.

Sharm El Sheikh is about an hour’s flight from Cairo but worth the trip. This beautiful beach town offers plenty of aquatic adventures. Ras Mohammad National Park is a popular diving and snorkelling site. Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, the Red Sea is teaming with rich marine life to explore including coral reefs. Continue the adrenaline rush at Naama Bay’s beautiful beaches with parasailing, kayaking, banana boat rides and more. Not the adventurous type? Simply sunbathe on the golden sands or take a dip in the clear turquoise waters.

SRI LANKA

Dubbed as a teardrop in the Indian Ocean because of its shape, Sri Lanka is a heavenly island destination offering myriad experiences. This eco-tourism paradise lets you relax on nature’s green lap and watch wildlife in their natural habitat. Plan a trip to Yala National Park, which is about 300km from Colombo airport; there are direct flights available. Book a safari for some elephant- and leopard-spotting or even stay overnight at one of the park’s lodges or beach resorts – the park is flanked by coastline.

Sri Lanka is well-known for its tea plantations and the local Ceylon leaves are revered by tea drinkers around the world. Popular plantations are located at Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Ella. There are organised tours available so, you can see how the tea is harvested, visit the factories and even sample this aromatic elixir. Ayurveda is big in Sri Lanka, which is home to many wellness resorts and spas. Santani in Kandy is globally renowned and offers a restorative experience with a range of wellness treatments including massages and food prepared by Ayurvedic principles. Book a one- or two-night stay at their garden- or mountain-view chalets and rejuvenate.

The climate’s usually hot and dry this time of the year but Sri Lanka spoils you for choice with its many white sand beaches. Popular ones include Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Weligama and Tangalla. Splash around in the sea or enjoy water activities such as snorkelling and surfing.

THE NEW MASERATI GRECALE

As long-time test drivers, the FACT team are always happy to get behind the wheel of a high-performance vehicle, especially when that vehicle is a Maserati.

Who wouldn’t want to spend the day in a Maserati? This month, FACT got to do exactly that thanks to the great team at Maserati Bahrain, who handed us the ‘keys’ to the 2023 Grecale. Needless to say, we were super excited to get our hands on this high-end machine.

Exterior

Named after a North Easterly Mediterranean wind, the Grecale is certainly a breath of fresh air. The moment we laid eyes on the vehicle, we knew we were taking in something rather special. At the front end of this striking SUV sits a low and imposing grille, complete with brushed chrome inserts and a large Trident emblem. This flawlessly designed feature, along with the perfectly sculpted bonnet and contemporary LED headlights, combine to create an aggressive-looking front end that seems to stare you down, daring you to try and tame it.

We appreciated the seamless transition between the front and the sides, where elegant yet sporty curves and lines create a visually pleasing surface. Body-coloured side-skirts and 20-inch alloy wheels further add to the classy nature of the exterior as do the flush-to-the-body door handles.

The trapezoidal dimensions of the vehicle are evident at the rear end, where boomerang taillights – inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 – integrate flawlessly with the uniquely crafted lip spoiler. The body-coloured bumpers at both front and rear contribute toward the SUV’s upmarket appearance, while the twin dual exhaust system, sitting under the diffuser, provides a subtle reminder of the Grecale’s on-road intentions.

Interior

The refined yet sporty feel of the exterior is skilfully complemented by the mastery of the interior design. The cabin of the Grecale exudes a sense of sophistication and elegance and is peppered with high-tech flourishes. Only the best materials have been used throughout, including Open Pore Wood and premium leather. The cabin also features beautiful trimmings such as the burnished inserts on the centre console and door panels. The button on the door rather than conventional door handles facilitates easy exit - every detail has a purpose.

The spacious nature of the Grecale provides comfortable seating for up to five occupants, while the cargo area provides 20cu/ft of storage space. This capacity can be greatly increased when the power-folding rear seating is laid flat, accomplished by the simple push of a button in the boot. A flat load floor is located underneath these rear seats, providing yet another storage option.

Technology & Infotainment

The 2023 Grecale features the latest Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA) multimedia system, operated through a 12.3-inch screen or voice control. This is the largest screen ever fitted in a Maserati and boasts a resolution of 15 million pixels in Ultra HD. An 8.8-inch screen has also been included in the setup and is used to access various additional vehicle controls.

The MIA is powered by the Android Auto operating system, which we found to be impressive in terms of response speed

and overall operating performance. The system also allows two smartphones to connect at once via Bluetooth and is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Noteworthy optional extras include a state-of-the-art head-up display, three-zone climate control and a Sonus Faber 3D sound system with up to 21 speakers.

The key, which is actually a very funky show-off wristband, is a standard feature with the Grecale, allowing for easy access and engine start.

Power & Performance

Our favourite moment of the day was firing up the Grecale 2.0-litre turbocharged, mild-hybrid engine. Not only does the engine have the sweet Maserati sound to it, but the SUV’s potent powertrain can deliver up to 300hp (220kW) and 450Nm of torque. The Maserati Grecale also comes with two other engines, the Modena with a 330hp and the Trofeo with the Nettuno engine, giving you 530hp.

This beauty of a four-wheel drive offers three driving modes including Comfort, GT and Sport. Its versatile and capable performance ensures it’s as comfortable on the road as it is in the rough.

We found the combination of these driving modes and the optional air suspension system to be sublime, and we thoroughly enjoyed our time negotiating the roadways of the Kingdom.

Furthermore, Maserati has included a full suite of safety and driver assistance systems, ensuring the well-being of all occupants.

Our Verdict

In the Grecale, Maserati has created a practical SUV that is amongst the very best in the luxury segment. Not only does it exhibit a near flawless design, it also delivers a capable performance and houses an impressive list of desirable technical features. ✤

REDEFINING HIGH-END CROSSOVERS

First launched in 1998, the Lexus RX has created the blueprint for luxury crossover utility vehicles and set the tone in the category ever since. Now, Ebrahim K. Kanoo, the sole distributor of Lexus vehicles in Bahrain, have further notched things up with the new RX.

Complementing the design is a thrilling drive personality imbued by three powertrain options. A newly developed inline fourcylinder, 2.4-litre turbocharged engine that produces 275hp and 430Nm of torque is mated to a new eight-speed, direct-shift automatic transmission (8AT). Meanwhile, the new hybrid-electric system combines a 2.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor to produce a total of 247hp, which is mated to an electronicallycontrolled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT) to provide a fuel consumption value of 20.7km/l. A hybrid-electric system pairing a 2.4-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor is also available, which provides a combined power of 366hp mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that offers fuel consumption of 15.5km/l while delivering a new level of driving pleasure. Those seeking to experience the ultimate in thrilling responsiveness can go for the RX 500h F SPORT, which is Lexus’ first-ever turbo hybrid electric vehicle. The company is on track to achieve a full lineup of electrified vehicles in all categories by 2030 and aims to sell 100% BEVs globally by 2035.

A sleeker silhouette has been developed by extending the bonnet, lengthening the wheelbase by 60mm and lowering the roofline by 10mm to create a coupé-like feel. The spacious interior offers

ample luggage space and five newly designed luxury seats with excellent legroom, including an eight-way adjustable power driver’s seat. You can choose from nine distinctive exterior colours, including the newly developed Sonic Copper and four interior shades, including the newly developed DK. Sepia.

The advanced Lexus Safety System+ includes a range of expanded and new features. In a world-first, the new Safe Exit Assist (SEA) feature uses an e-latch system combined with a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), which detects traffic or cyclists approaching from the rear and automatically cancels door opening to avoid a collision. Lexus’ Tazuna concept, derived from the Japanese word meaning reins to control a horse, focuses on delivering intuitive control. ✤

In Conversation with… Emre Kirazci

It’s been a year since you stepped into your current role. What attracted you to this position and are there any major experiences that stand out?

During my professional journey, I have always been motivated to be more involved in the hotel’s day-to-day operations in addition to my other commercial roles. Along with my transition to the Director of Operations position, I had the opportunity to work closely with our fellow heads of department, our general manager and owning company representative. As a milestone achievement of 2022, with extensive team efforts, we delivered a very positive reputation score for the hotel at 92% – the highest reputation score among five-star hotels in the Kingdom. I personally feel privileged and grateful for the guidance and support

provided to us by the leadership of our owning company, ZRC Resorts, and Accor Hotels Middle East regional team.

You’ve come a long way, working with globally renowned brands such as Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel. What are the top learnings from this journey that you apply even today?

After an extensive career leading commercial and global sales teams within the hospitality sector, I have developed a natural client-oriented mindset. My mission as Director of Operations is to add further commercial value to the operations, and it’s a great privilege to inspire the Sofitel team and work together with fellow department heads to achieve our objectives while further enhancing the experience of our guests by providing a bespoke and intuitive service.

We are extremely proud to highlight that we have been hosting the majority of the Indian weddings in the Kingdom and are so grateful to be working with the most prestigious event and wedding planners from India, which has helped us to put our country, Bahrain, as a destination on the radar of these highprofile Indian families and the wedding fraternity, in joint efforts with our esteemed tourism authority office BTEA – Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, as well as the Boutique Charter flight services of our national carrier, Gulf Air. Indian hospitality service standards are amongst the most impeccable in the world. Our clients are high-net-worth individuals with refined tastes and equally high expectations. A marriage is a matter of great pride and the most important day in the couple’s life together, and we completely understand that. Our objective in 2023 will be to keep attracting these highprofile weddings to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

What surprises can we expect from Sofitel in 2023?

Thanks to the continuous support of our owning company and aiming to expand our offering, we are currently working on the addition of four new villas that will open in the upcoming months, a milestone that will elevate our room inventory inviting guests to spend quality time with friends and family in a private setting here in the magical south of the Kingdom. On the other hand, situated at the former site of our iconic

restaurant Tapas, we bring to the Kingdom, a brand-new restaurant concept where guests will find a blend of GreekMediterranean cuisine, with open-air terrace beverages, an extensive selection of hookah and a specially curated lineup of live entertainment. In addition to this and as part of our current renovation projects, we are working on a property development assignment for our signature Italian restaurant Fiamma with a complete new design of the outlet’s look and feel. Also, we have just completed a redesign of our Lobby Lounge, along with all corridors as well as our conference spaces.

In support of sustainability, farm-to-table is a trend that has been taking the world by storm – and now, we are bringing this concept to the shores of Zallaq. We have recently unveiled our own farm on-site, where guests can tour the garden, which features a variety of herbs and vegetables, and learn about the different types of fresh organic products.

On a personal level what are your favourite things to do in Bahrain when you’re not working?

I am a passionate traveller as I have been intrigued with exploring different cultures since I was a kid. This passion together with my outgoing personality is what brought me to the hospitality industry, and finally to this amazing country.

I love the gastronomic choices that the country offers and spend my spare time discovering new restaurants and hotel concepts and getting inspired by new trends that are always useful to enhance the experience of our guests.

Combined with meditation sessions, cycling, reading and enjoying any activity related to the sea, I have found in martial arts a way to de-stress and release from my hectic daily routine. It’s a very effective way to balance my body and mind. ✤

ISLAND INSIDER

Kevin Rowe

Food & Beverage (F&B) Manager, Hilton Bahrain

What’s your earliest memory of falling in love with the F&B sector? Any inspirations?

I grew up in a boarding school quite a distance away from my hometown and I would find myself frequently going to friends’ houses/farms over the weekends. My friends’ parents were exceptional hosts, they ran a game farm and in peak season the mum would bake waffles for her guests, just as a gesture. As a young boy, I would deliver them. The smiles on people’s faces were priceless – serving food makes people happy. She was really my inspiration – my first paid holiday job was in hospitality, and so it continues.

What’s a normal day like for you?

I get up early to go to the gym or run outside, followed by some light reading and a shower. Around 7.45am, I will be at work where I start my day reading all relevant reports and emails regarding last night’s operation. Then, it’s time for the first walkaround to the breakfast area, lobby lounge,

room service and conference centre, before heading to the morning meeting. Depending on the day there will be meetings, office work, but most of all I love to regularly pass by all areas of the hotel and back of house to connect with guests and team members and make observations for improvements. The 4pm meeting with my F&B team is essential to communicate important information. Until 6pm or 7pm I have time for some projects, administration and meetings before it is time for dinner service to kick off with hopefully a full bar for happy hour and many reservations. When operations are under control, I will go home or get a bite or drink at a competitor’s property as it’s important to keep up with the market. If it is a busy night, I like to stay around the hotel.

What major learnings from your 15 years of operational experience do you intend to bring to Hilton Bahrain?

Over the years, I have gained a strong

knowledge and understanding of various international cuisines such as Japanese, Italian and Mexican; along with my capacity to manage and organise largescale banqueting and outdoor catering events. Last and probably the one that tops my learnings, is the ability to uplift guest dining experiences by providing creative and high-quality food along with prompt service.

I am thrilled to be a part of the vibrant team at Hilton Bahrain, inspired by the brand's culture of forward-thinking sustainability in the food and beverage industry. The focus on reducing waste through growing our own ingredients and supporting local producers is truly commendable. And with exciting initiatives such as Hilton's Waitographer [Hilton professionally trains its restaurant and bar staff to click photos and capture moments for guests], I am constantly wowed by the fun, fresh and upbeat energy of this exceptional organisation.

Kostantinos Bouklis, Executive Chef at My Cafe, talks about experiences that refined his palate, the excitement of opening a new outlet and more.

fact magazine 68
• VOICE FROM THE KITCHEN

You’ve worked with various high-end hospitality brands such as Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens, La Villa Archange in Cannes, the award-winning Le Loft and other international names. Are there any major learnings or experiences from this time that you hold close to your heart?

From my experiences working in gastronomy, I gained exposure to various food cultures, met people with different backgrounds from hospitality that opened the door to my curiosity for the culinary world. Hailing from Greece, I had access to the world of Mediterranean goodness which I grew up with. However, my experience outside my home country is what helped me develop my palate. The experience I hold close to me is what I have gained since I moved to Bahrain about eight years ago. I have relished the opportunity to work in a setup like My Cafe group who regularly invite Michelin-starred guest chefs from around the globe, such as Juliene Royer, Mauro Colagrecco, Augustin Balbi and Bruno Oger. The chance to work and exchange ideas with chefs of this calibre has had a huge and cherished influence on me.

What have been the most satisfying and challenging aspects of opening My Cafe’s Riffa outlet in 2022?

Pre-openings are always fun and opening the second branch for My Cafe came with the responsibility of keeping up with the reputation, standards and consistency that it represents in the market. Rather than replicating Adliya in Riffa, we wanted each outlet to offer something unique yet still keeping true to who we are. When coming up with the menu for Riffa we wanted to create items that were innovative and could give My Cafe a new

feel but still staying true to our essence. We even added a pastry counter with really decadent desserts, we also offer afternoon tea with unique items on there. Overall, it’s been a real pleasure watching it flourish and develop. I would define the pre-opening phase as a very fulfilling experience more than a challenge. I have been dedicated to building an incredible team to contribute to delivering the ‘My Cafe experience’.

How would you define the food and experience at My Cafe?

The idea of My Cafe is to offer comfort, yet a sophisticated dining experience to our customers. Our dining space has a very cosy atmosphere, we really aim to make our patrons feel at home. Through our cuisine we wanted to define a new code of contemporary, no-borders dining with access to an eclectic menu that is put together with dishes to suit any palate. It is evident that the dishes we curate are a result of a combined source of skills and techniques influenced from different cultures. We take pride in serving a diverse and extensive menu to our invaluable customers throughout the day.

What would you say is your signature dish and why?

The Truffle Pappardelle is one of my favourite signature dishes. It represents the My Cafe ethos for delivering the finest from scratch. Our pappardelle pasta is meticulously shaped in-house with a twist of truffle and pecorino, this traditional pasta lays upon a sauce made of a porcini-truffle cheese sauce, folded with wild mushrooms such as shiitake, oyster and Portobello. Generously finished with Parmigiano Reggiano to recreate this absolute classic. ✤

A PLUM DINING EXPERIENCE

The

moody and soulful ambience of Plums at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain welcomed Liz O’Reilly for a midweek feast.
CULINARY SPOTLIGHT •

Ilove The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain. Its ladies and gentlemen and its aura of old-fashioned service. So, an invite to one of its restaurants is always a treat and Plums is, without doubt, among the best of them.

Arriving early evening, I pause a moment to take in the sultry surroundings – dim lighting, dark accessories and plush velvet giving an atmosphere of luxury complemented by the hospitable welcome and quiet ambient music as we are shown to our table. I could say much about the tasteful décor, the clink of highquality glass and silverware and the subtle artworks but truly, the food here is the star and speaks more than eloquently for itself. So, we take our comfortable seats and prepare to tuck in. Now, everyone does bread and I don’t usually mention it but bear with me. Hot sourdough, straight from the oven. Crusty and crunchy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside, it is the accompaniments that make it extra special. The French spicy butter is deliciously creamy with a distinct tang, while I would happily eat the high-quality chilli oil teaming with chunks of roasted garlic all day long.

The amuse-bouches are off-menu avocado fritters and salmon tartare that give a deserved opportunity for chef to show off. They arrive in small, lidded China bowls which look so pretty and are beautifully presented on a slate tray accompanied by rose petals and edible flowers.

The fritters sit on an abundant bed of fragrant rosemary and are perfect spheres of the lush fruit (yes avo is a fruit, not a vegetable), coated in a mix of breadcrumbs and rice flour, fried to a perfect crispy consistency and topped with a tasty daub of creamed goat’s cheese to add a delicious, salty bite to the creamy centre.

fact magazine 72 • CULINARY SPOTLIGHT

The salmon tartare is smoked and deliciously smoky served with capers and radish sliced almost translucently thin and lightly drenched in velvety avocado, sweet soy and Worcester sauce. It is the perfect opener to our meal and truly does amuse the mouth. For my appetiser, I choose the Dynamite Shrimp Tempura –four huge shrimps in a crispy tempura batter accompanied by three small pots containing soy sauce with spring onions, wasabi with cream and the famous Dynamite. The namesake sauce is sweet with an impressive bite of heat but I am truly in love with the wasabi. Its generous, decadent texture is perfect for dipping the crunch-encased fluffy crustaceans and the combination of velvety cream with the wasabi kick is truly impressive. My dining companion goes for the Plums Salad – a hearty (if salad can be thus described) mix of lettuce, avocado, asparagus, béarnaise sauce and croutons with a soya truffle dressing. The chunky asparagus spears are beautifully al dente, the glistening green enhanced by the delicate pale yellow of the béarnaise and I am intrigued and delighted by the combination of soy and truffle which renders the dressing supremely flavourful.

After a brief sojourn for digestion and a refreshing palate cleanser of lemon and mint sorbet, our mains arrive. And I must start with my friend’s dish, for mine is truly abundant and will take some description.

The chef has kindly prepared an asparagus risotto with parmesan shavings for my non-carnivore dining companion who immediately falls silent, a rare occurrence, while digging into the succulent rice. She later tells me it has the perfect bite and the parmesan and asparagus are happy companion flavours.

My own plate is a veritable cornucopia of surf and turf – the surf represented by both shrimp and a succulent half lobster tail and

the turf by both ribeye and tenderloin. Alongside there is yummy roasted garlic; chunky, crispy skin-on fries; a lush pool of pumpkin and carrot puree; baby tomatoes and crunchy asparagus.

Not sure I will be able to do this magnificent spread justice, I begin with the lobster tail which is sweet, yielding and succulent. I plan to just have a bite or two but it is so good, I cannot resist devouring half the flesh before moving on to the meat, all of which is expertly cut in-house.

The medium-rare tenderloin is absolutely perfect, seared on the outside, achingly deep pink inside and butter soft, the depth of flavour enhanced by a subtle rub and a slice of the smoky garlic. The richly fatted ribeye is, if possible, even better and I savour the juices gently released under my knife eagerly mopping them up with chunks of crispy potato and flavourful asparagus. The shrimp is equally satisfying, a delicate, mild combination of salt and sweet with a buttery texture that plays with the taste buds and needs no adornment.

Almost replete, we decide to share a dessert – purely in the interests of research – and are served the Chocolate Lovers Cake. There is chocolate upon chocolate, in cake, jelly and solid form, accompanied by homemade vanilla ice cream and served with fresh raspberry and blueberry alongside daubs of raspberry purée which are perfect to cut through the richness. The combination of textures is interesting and the flavours luxurious. A fitting end to a fabulous repast. ✤

DINING IN OPULENCE

Melissa Nazareth was treated to a luxurious Levantine feast at Zahrat Al Fayrouz, Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa.
DINING DELIGHT •

Offering a tranquil retreat for all ages and preferences, Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa is nothing short of a palace from the Arabian Nights. Ideally located on the south-west coast of the Kingdom, it is the perfect spot for a family staycation, a weekend with friends or loved ones or even an exquisite dining experience. That’s what I discovered at Zahrat Al Fayrouz, a restaurant serving up a selection of Levantine dishes, located on Basement 2.

Moderately lit, it beckoned to us with soothing Arab instrumental music. The décor, traditional yet exhibiting modern touches, is impressive to say the least. It’s in keeping with the opulence of the rest of the hotel; Oriental rugs draping the reception desk, dark wood furniture upholstered in crimson and Levantine turquoise, pottery displays, paintings, mesh partitions and archways… The restaurant is spacious with private dining sections and an extensive outdoor area – perfect to unwind with a hookah – Zahrat Al Fayrouz has a selection of flavours you can enjoy. Our generous host guided us to a table of our choice and soon after, the feast commenced. First came the mezze. It’s typically served with a bread basket of what we were told is Turkish bread – airy and topped with sesame seeds. You can order other varieties separately; we went for Pita. Among the cold appetisers, we had hummus, baba ghanouj, moutabel and muhammara. I thoroughly enjoyed the smoky flavours of the grilled eggplant in the baba ghanouj and moutabel. The muhammara, made from chilli paste, garnished with buttery chopped walnuts and infused with a tangy pomegranate sauce and fruity olive oil, was silken and delicious. Our hot appetisers included Batata Harra, cheese rakakat, spinach fatayer, meat sambousek and fried kibbeh. I dived into the Batata Harra, fried and spiced potato cubes. Zahrat Al Fayrouz’s version

fact magazine 76 • DINING DELIGHT

has a good kick to it, which appealed to my Indian palate. Next in the line of favourites for me were the beef kibbeh. Crispy on the outside, they encased an exceedingly flavourful minced meat filling, cooked in intense, earthy spices that provided a gentle heat. We also tried Lahmeh Bel Ajeen Manakish, a pizza-like dish topped with aromatic minced lamb and toasted pine seeds for crunch. Before our main course arrived, my companions and I cleansed our palate with some refreshing salads. While you can never go wrong with fattoush and tabbouleh, the jarjeer stood out for me. A bed of pungent green rocket leaves and juicy sliced tomatoes and onions, all brought together with premium quality olive oil, vinegar and pomegranate sauce. What I love about pomegranate sauce is that it’s tangy but with a hint of sweetness, which is quite different when compared to the citrusy zing of limes and lemons. The first main course to arrive was the Vegetarian Thareed. A traditional Middle Eastern stew, thareed usually also has meat. However, this version was an absolute delight. The broth had so many levels of flavour with the spices and aromatics. It complemented the light, saffron-infused long-grain rice topped with fried onions. The dish is also served with Arabic bread that you can dunk in this rich curry, topped with raisins and blackcurrants.

This was followed by the mixed grill platter, which featured Bahraini tikka – zinged up with the local black lime spice – meat and chicken skewers and a lamb chop. We constructed our own bite-sized wraps around this juicy, meaty goodness and topped them with the accompanying grilled onion, chilli and tomato. Our cold mezze came in handy here, serving as sauces. That’s the beauty of Levantine dining – you can go back to previously served courses as you please.

Next came a hearty plate of Mansaf, which we were told by our generous host is a Jordanian dish, popular in Palestine too.

Zahrat Al Fayrouz offers a variety, from Lebanese and Iranian to Greek-inspired creations. The Mansaf comprised of a lamb shank sat royally on a bed of yellow stout-grained Oriental rice. The meat was braised and exceedingly tender to cut and eat. It complemented the rice which was topped with toasted almonds for crunch. The lamb is coated in laban jameed – yoghurt made from goat’s milk, which offers a slight tartness to every bite and works supremely well with the robust flavours of the flesh.

If there’s one dish you try at Zahrat Al Fayrouz, let it be the spinach and cheese baklava. I never knew baklava could be prepared as a savoury creation. A splendid medley of eggs, spinach, potatoes and salty Akawi cheese layered with filo pastry and drizzled with a buttery chickpea relish, it blew my mind. And the Kuku Sabzi, an airy Levantine egg muffin, if I may, was served with a yoghurt dip and utterly moreish.

We washed down this rich feast with a fizzy concoction of hibiscus, oranges, lemons and mint laced with star anise, which was refreshing. For dessert, we kept it simple – or so we thought – with a selection of ice creams. The flavours were exotic and I personally have never had them anywhere else in Bahrain – hibiscus sorbet, date mascarpone and orange-blossom. The scoops were sat on a crumble that complemented each particular flavour. A sweet and pleasantly surprising ending that will surely make us return for more. ✤

SEASONAL INDULGENCE

FOODIE CORNER •
Liz O’Reilly discovered infinite possibilities for the perfect Ramadan treat at Sash Café.

Having recently visited the fabulous neighbouring spa of the same, I was eager to try its sister eatery and headed to Sash Café in Riffa for a sneak peek at some of the Ramadan specialities.

The space is airy and light with plush velour seating both on banquettes and fabulously comfortable sofas. Accent walls in antiqued mirrored glass and palm-printed paper, a mini-library, and crystal chandeliers give a feeling of opulence without being over the top. And, above all, the ambience is welcoming.

Seated on one of the banquettes, our host explains that they create a special Ramadan menu each year and this year's is mainly Arabic with hints of international Influence. Though most Ramadan menu items are new, there are, of course, a couple of all-time favourites, which always return – guests would not have it otherwise.

A nice touch is that the dishes are served on special seasonal plates featuring Arabic writing and we start off with Biryani Bombs – an inspired creation consisting of balls of aromatic biryani rice, rich in the traditional mix of ‘granny’s’ spices, encased in crispy panko and golden fried. Served on a bed of creamy baba ghanoush and diced tomato salsa, this clearly says ‘traditional Ramadan food’ but with a fun and interesting twist. These are a firm favourite and I will certainly be ordering them again.

A falafel salad is one of those dishes that’s made a return from last year and it’s easy to see why. Lots of rocket and cucumber gives a green healthy impression with both look and feel elevated by a scattering of jewel-like crimson pomegranate seeds. The mini falafel are crunchy and satisfying, their fluffy interiors imparting a subtle tang of heat. The dressing of lemon and tahini is the ideal complement and the addition of chickpeas that have been boiled, crushed and spiced to perfection before being crispy fried add the stand-out element. (I have far more than my fair share of these and feel no shame at all!)

fact magazine 80 • FOODIE CORNER

Beef Rendang Paninis present another surprising combination. If you’re a fan of this lightly-spiced Indonesian meat dish, you’ll love these. The slow-braised and pulled meat is explosively flavourful and so tender that it barely needs chewing. Serving it on bread with an onion jam is a creative masterstroke since Ramadan is all about easy-to-eat comforting food. And I absolutely have to give special mention to the accompanying French fries. They must be at least triple-cooked to achieve an amazing crispy exterior that persists even when they are no longer piping hot – though, to be fair, we didn’t leave them sitting for long.

I am thoroughly impressed by the Chicken Tikka Tacos – tender Bahraini tikka meat served in mini taco shells that look almost too cute to eat. Packed with lettuce and diced tomatoes and with a fragrant mint chutney dressing, they are salty and savoury and send my taste buds into a delighted happy dance. Finally for the last of the savouries, we try Madrooba Risotto, a creamy risotto with a twist of spicy chicken madrooba. The use of the risotto rice with the traditional madrooba spices has made this a popular returning dish and the addition of parmesan shavings, once again, adds an international flavour to this classic Bahraini fare.

To accompany our food, we try a selection of seasonal drinks – the classic lemon and mint is, as expected, thoroughly refreshing; a creamy avocado concoction with cucumber, mango and pineapple, is almost a meal in a glass; and, my favourite is the hibiscus iced tea which is slightly sweet and totally thirst-quenching.

For dessert, we are served, somewhat to my trepidation, Date Cheesecake. Now, I will confess that I’m thinking this shouldn’t work. But, to my delight, it absolutely does. Dates are mixed with the cheese to achieve an almost caramel-like flavour, the biscuit base is crunchy perfection and the pistachio and date garnish renders this a thing of great beauty. A sprig of tart redcurrants offers the ideal, slightly sour foil to the rich sweetness of the cake. Heavenly.

Finally, we sample the amazing Ramadan Dates Box. If you’re thinking of gifts in this special season, you definitely won’t go wrong with this. Beautifully presented, it contains a selection featuring Snickers dates – yes they really do taste like the popular chocolate bar – alongside dates stuffed and coated in fabulous combinations such as nut praline and candied walnut; Lotus cream and biscuit; dark Valrhona chocolate and Sash ganache; and white chocolate with pistachio and apricot. You’ll certainly be invited back if you bring these as a hostess gift.

For me, Sash is a recent discovery but I am so impressed with the thought that has gone into everything on this Ramadan menu making sure the offering is traditional but, at the same time, brings unexpected, flavourful twists to keep your taste buds guessing. I shall certainly be back, both during Ramadan and long after. All of these fabulous items and more are available to eat in or take away during Ramadan. ✤

BETWEEN TWO CONTINENTS

Travelling to one of the most spectacular cities in the world to experience one of the finest five-star hotels in all of Europe proved to be an unforgettable adventure.

• TRAVEL
TRAVEL •

There are many magical spots across the globe that travellers long to visit. However, a few stand out in people’s minds due to the abundance of history, culture, architecture, beautiful weather and amazing cuisine on offer. Istanbul, in Türkiye, is one of these places. This beautiful and colourful metropolis is the only city that straddles both Europe and the Middle East, making it simultaneously a European and Asian city.

The five-star hotel Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus invited us to experience this bucket-list destination for four spectacular days and three unforgettable nights.

OUR ARRIVAL

As soon as we disembarked our flight, we were greeted by a hotel delegate and whisked away to our accommodation. En route, we caught a sneak peek of the splendour awaiting us in Istanbul. This breathtaking location, with its grand architecture, an assortment of mosques, vibrant colours and rich history, was enough to keep our eyes wide open in sheer awe at all the splendour to be discovered.

THE ROOMS

Arriving at Conrad Istanbul Bosphorus, courteous and professional staff were on hand to welcome us and attend to our every need. We were soon booked in and heading to our respective suites. We all agreed it had to be one of the friendliest and most efficient airport-to-hotel-room experiences we’ve ever had.

All 553 guest accommodations, including suites, are of an exceptional standard – we had the pleasure of inspecting numerous types, including rooms and a variety of luxury suites.

I was booked into the beautiful King Deluxe Room and couldn’t have been more pleased with my corner of the hotel. This stylish and modern space offers all the amenities you could need for a comfortable and pampered stay. With its king-sized bed, soundproof windows, free wi-fi, Nespresso machine, 40-inch LCD TV and a Turkish-style bathroom complete with rain shower, I couldn’t have felt more content.

THE CUISINE

The hotel ensured we were delighted in all aspects, especially when it came to meal times.

SUMMIT BAR & TERRACE

On the first evening, we were invited to attend a meal at the Summit Bar and Terrace, located on the 14th floor. The panoramic views of the city and the Bosphorus Strait that welcomed us on the rooftop enhanced the feeling of wonder that accompanies the experience of an exotic new location. Our first culinary experience at the hotel was memorable as we were spoilt with scrumptious dishes from around the world. The Asian options at this venue were exquisite and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal, along with the bird's-eye view of the city.

MANZARA

On our second evening, we were once again treated like royalty, this time with an invite to the Manzara restaurant. Once more, we were gifted with amazing views of Istanbul, including its historical peninsula. At this fine-dining restaurant, we witnessed exceptional chefs preparing dishes in an open kitchen. Boasting a delicious menu of culinary masterpieces from various Mediterranean cultures, it wasn’t easy to choose from the wide array of dishes on the mouth-watering menu. Ultimately, it didn’t matter what we selected, as all the food was prepared to perfection and we had a truly enjoyable evening filled with feasting and laughter.

Creed III Cunk On Earth

Need to Know:

Having left his mark on the boxing world, Adonis Creed retires to focus on his family but then a childhood friend and former boxing prodigy resurfaces after serving time in prison eager to prove he deserves a shot in the ring. The face-off between the former friends is more than just a fight. To settle the score, Adonis must put his future on the line.

Need to Know:

Cunk on Earth is a British mockumentary television series that’s been produced by Charlie Brooker of multiple award-winning Black Mirror fame. Cunk is a fake journalist who’s parodying a serious BBC interviewer while visiting real historical sites and museums, and meeting with leading academics in philosophy, science and related fields. Though silly initially, the series plays out as a riot of well-timed hilarity while also being exceedingly interesting and informative along the way.

Director: Michael B. Jordan

Cast : Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson, Jonathan Majors, Wood Harris, Mila Davis-Kent, Florian Munteanu, Phylicia Rashad

Why Is It Worth Watching?

Creed III is a sports drama film that’s the ninth overall in the Rocky film series. The movie also sees Michael B. Jordan (Adonis Creed) make his directorial debut as well as playing the lead role. When much younger, Adonis was best friends with Damian Anderson (Majors), a Golden Gloves champion with aspirations to turn professional and become a world champion. But Anderson’s life took an unexpected turn landing him in prison. Meanwhile, in the current day, Adonis has hung up his gloves to focus on his wife Bianca (Thompson) and their daughter Amara (Davis-Kent). He runs his boxing academy and is promoting his protégé. Damian reconnects with ‘Donnie’ after getting out of jail and shares his desire to resume his boxing career. Resentful after his time in prison, Damian feels robbed of his career and envious of Adonis’ life – his intentions aren’t good. As chaos ensues, these once friends now find themselves as bitter rivals who may have to settle their differences inside the ring.

Director: Christian Watt

Cast : Diane Morgan, Jim Al-Khalili, Shirley J. Thompson, Douglas Hedley, Brian Klaas, Ashley Jackson

Why Is It Worth Watching?

This collaboration between Netflix and the BBC sees the wonderfully witty Diane Morgan take on the role of Philomena Cunk, a character that gained fame on British comedy review programme Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe . Cunk isn't very well-informed, but that doesn’t hold her back from saying what she thinks, and what she thinks is often immensely funny. During the five-part series, Cunk covers serious topics along with serious experts, discussing events such as the emergence of humankind, the birth and development of religions, the renaissance, scientific advancements and the raging of world wars, as well as the state of current technology and culture. All the above are approached and engaged by Cunk with her unmistakably dry and splendidly sardonic sense of humour.

Surprisingly enough, through all the laughs, Cunk on Earth manages to get its facts right, which only adds to the charm of this terrific show.

ON THE RECORD

ALTERNATIVE/INDIE

This Stupid World

If you’re into alternative music, then this is an album to watch out for. An American indie rock band, Yo La Tengo was formed in 1984. Although some of the members have changed over the years, core duo, Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley have remained constant. Bass player James McNew joined in 1992. This Stupid World has a unique stringsy sound. At the same time, it gives off indie vibes with atypical beats – the songs don’t try to maintain a beat just to qualify as club hits like on Tonight’s Episode. Ira’s singing style is easy going, as if he were jamming out of his bedroom-turned-studio, which offers a rustic edge as in Fallout Georgia on Aselestine will blow you away. The track has a different pace and energy compared to others on the LP; like warm sunshine thawing your cold heart. The words are raw, hitting the right spot. Speaking of lyrics, Until It Happens gives the listener a reality check. “Prepare to die/ Prepare yourself while there's still time/ It's simple to do/ And then it happens to you.”

There’s a heaviness that looms throughout, surfacing in songs such as Apology Letter, which ironically also proves to be the remedy. This release via Matador Records comes after three years, and, it’s safe to say, the wait has been worth it.

COUNTRY POP One Thing at a Time

Morgan Wallen’s latest release via Big Loud Records offers elements of country music with the acoustic guitar and Wallen’s addictive Southern accent, but with a modern touch, so to speak. Catchy tunes and simple words characterise this 36song album – ideal for a long drive. There are references to God throughout and even the music on many occasions seamlessly alternates between country and gospel. On Man Made A Bar , Wallen sings, “So God made a girl, His best work of art/ Oh, but he didn't make no place to go when she breaks your heart/ So man madе a bar”. But then, Wallen seems to have his own idea of God and religion. On In The Bibl e – “Lord knows I'd be one hell of a disciple/ If bein' country was in the Bible” and on Don’t Think Jesus – “Boy moves to city, lives fast and goes hard/ Starts chasin' the devil through honky-tonk bars”.

There are references to imbibing, relationships and heartbreak too. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine these tracks being played on a loop in someone’s bedroom. One Thing at a Time is only Wallen’s third creation but is nonetheless promising.

HISTORICAL MYSTERY Symphony of Secrets

A terrible title for a fun and gripping read in which the works of a musical maestro are called into question. Music professor Bern Hendricks is called in to authenticate a lost opera from America’s most famous composer, Frederick Delaney. But, his research uncovers a shocking tale of stolen inspiration involving a young, black, jazz-age musician. The powerful foundation, which protects Delaney’s works, will stop at nothing to keep the secret hidden while Bern and his techsavvy chum Eboni will move heaven and earth to discover the truth.

SUSPENSE, PSYCHOLOGICAL FICTION Before We Were Innocent

A summer in Greece heralded the unthinkable for three young friends – only two made it home. The survivors, Bess and Joni, were cleared of any involvement in their pal’s demise but still, they were subjected to intense media speculation. One milked the tragedy to become a successful public speaker while the other hid away to lick her wounds. Now, 10 years on, successful Joni is entangled in a similar situation and Bess must decide whether to support her friend and at the same time face up to what happened on that fateful night in Greece.

What We’re (Still) Talking About

A Worthy Winner Nature’s Lightshow Cracked Egg

The Elephant Whisperers, the Indian short documentary film available on Netflix, winning at the Oscars was a proud and happy moment not just for Indians but animal-lovers around the world. Another win was Natu Natu, which clinched the Academy Award for original song, which some thought was debatable. But we’re not here to judge. We’re here to highlight how more films like The Elephant Whisperers must be made, watched and recognised. Directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, the plot revolves around Bomman and Bellie, a couple that takes care of orphaned elephant calves. Also featured is Raghu, a baby ele, whose mother dies after being electrocuted by a fence – elephants tend to walk toward the village in search of food and water especially during drier months. What ensues is a heart-tugging love story between human and (gentle) beast. The dynamic brings out how misunderstood these highly intelligent and emotional animals are – an urgent message given the dwindling numbers of Asian elephants.
