This exhibition features a greatly expanded story of our city from before written history to the present, set in an engaging, fun, and interactive atmosphere. Our story is told through four galleries: Spirited, Courageous, Resourceful and Innovative, all connecting to a central gallery entitled Our Land.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 9 1–4 P.M. PUBLIC OPENING Celebrate the opening of the exhibition New Territories: Laboratories for Art, Craft and Design in Latin America. Enjoy a talk by Lowery Stokes Sims, chief curator emerita from the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, a performance by the Odara Dance Ensemble and an all-ages art project in the Museum School. Free with general admission.

Inspired by the exhibition The Artistic Odyssey of Higinio V. Gonzales, visit with contemporary tinsmiths, hear music by modern day corridistas and create your own artwork inspired by Gonzales’ work. Enjoy snacks and beverages from Slate at the Museum (until 8 p.m.)

This exhibition traces the life of Gonzales and, for the very first time, explores his influence on tinwork, music, poetry, and the arts in New Mexico.

Hard Edge Abstraction in the 20th Century

Unlike representational images and narrative illustration, “nonobjective” abstraction emphasized the power of pure color, scale, and form. Works in this installation are selected from the Museum’s permanent collection of works on paper, and include artists Josef Albers, Garo Antreasian, Paul Feeley, Frederick Hammersley, Oli Sihvonen, and Victor Vasarely.

MARCH PROGRAMS AND EVENTS SUNDAY, MARCH 6 1–3:00 P.M. FILM: WASTE LAND The film Waste Land follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he chronicles the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. Muniz’s work is featured in the current exhibition, New Territories.

New Mexico premiere of the Opera Southwest season. The event features a panel discussion and muscial selections. Reservations are $10 for OSW Guild members, $12 for the general public, less 10% for Museum members. Information and Reservations in advance at www.operasouthwest.org/guild

2ND SATURDAY AT CASA SAN YSIDRO, MARCH 12 1:30 P.M.

“A Dress of Tarlatan…and Two Flint Plates” is the tale of the economic impact of two roads, the Camino Real and the Santa Fe Trail, on residents of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This program is free and visitors may tour Casa’s collection following the program.
