Panel: The Printer’s Proof

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 2 – 3 P.M.

Talk: Sowing Seeds of Freedom

A discussion between Master printers Marina Ancona and Michael Costello and artists Harmony Hammond and Karsten Creightney about how the final print is often shaped by the nature of the collaborative process between artist and printer. Moderated by Albuquerque Museum Curator Josie Lopez.

A vision, a journey, and a desire manifested with the incorporation of New Mexico’s first all-Black town, Blackdom. Despite dismal precipitation levels, Blackdom residents were able to cultivate significant crops of the African diaspora. This talk is presented by Maya Allen, a Ph.D student in biology at the University of New Mexico.

Casa San Ysidro Second Saturday: Santeros of the Classic Period in New Mexico: 1795 to 1845

Artist Talk: Nikesha Breeze

From 1795 to 1845, three Santeros helped to define traditional art in New Mexico. At 1 p.m. Dr. Kathleen Killorin presents on the Laguna and Molleno Santeros and Rafaél Aragón, as they are represented in the Albuquerque Museum’s collection, San Francisco de Asís Church in Rancho de Taos, and Holy Cross Church in Santa Cruz, New Mexico. Free event.

Nikesha Breeze’s work is deeply invested in reclaiming both historical narratives of the African diasporic body and the reclaiming of Afro-futures. Breeze is descended from one of the founding families of Blackdom, the first African American community in New Mexico. Her talk will explore her works, artistic practice, and connections to Blackdom. You can see her work in the exhibition Indelible Blue on view through April 24.

3rd Thursday: The Printer’s Proof

Please join us at Casa San Ysidro for a hands-on opportunity to gain the fundamental knowledge necessary to begin making your own tools, knives, and decorative art. Registration required through UNM Continuing Education.

Discover the exhibition The Printer’s Proof: Artist and Printer Collaborations. Listen to music from local singersongwriter Lara Manzanares. Do yoga in the Museum galleries with YogaZo.

Traditional Wet Felting Workshop Casa San Ysidro hosts a workshop for students 14 years and older. Learn basic wet felting technique with Eliseo Curley, an awardwinning Navajo sheepherder from Shiprock. Materials for the project, a small coin bag, will be provided. Panel: The Printer’s Proof

Public Opening and Awards Ceremony: Focus on Youth

This discussion will explore the process of printmaking through the perspective of Master printers Robert Arber and Bill Lagattuta. This panel will be moderated by Marjorie Devon, former director of the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque.

THURSDAY, MAY 19, 5:00 – 8:30 P.M.

3rd Thursday Explore the Museum’s permanent collection galleries. Listen to music from local Salsa favorite Son Como Son in the Museum Amphitheater. Do yoga in the Museum galleries with YogaZo.

Focus on Youth is an annual youth exhibition of photography and film produced in partnership with the Albuquerque Public Schools Fine Arts Program. An awards ceremony takes place at 2 p.m.

Heritage Day Casa San Ysidro joins the Corrales Historical Society in celebrating local heritage with a free event that exhibits the living traditions of New Mexico. Celebrate at Casa San Ysidro with a variety of activities that highlight local art and history.

Old Town Walking Tours Explore historic Old Town on foot with informative docents who will provide insight into the people and places that shaped our early community. No registration required. Included with admission.

Sculpture Garden Tours Enjoy a pleasant stroll in our sculpture garden with a friendly docent who will share stories about the artists and their works. No registration required. Included with admission.

Tours of Casa San Ysidro Class: Heritage Spinning and Weaving - Dyeing Purposes and Uses This class features practices used for dyeing wool with indigo. Guests will learn the use of traditional and local dye plants to replicate colors of the time period and practices used for dyeing wool. This class is included with Museum admission. Casa San Ysidro Second Saturday: Robert Martinez: The History of Hispano Music

Photoarchivist Jill Hartke will discuss the current exhibition featuring photographs from the Museum’s collection that showcase the men and women who paved the roads and built the businesses we use to navigate Albuquerque.

State Historian Rob Martinez takes a musical journey through New Mexico’s rich historical past and cultural tapestry, presenting song forms that date back centuries. Free event.

Class: Heritage Spinning and Weaving – Dyeing Purposes and Uses

Join us for an evening of family fun with hands-on activities and performances focusing on the exhibition Facing the Rising Sun: The Journey of African American Homesteaders in New Mexico.

This class features traditional methods and technique using natural dyes. Guests will learn the use of traditional and local dye plants to replicate colors of the time. Learn to dye wool with natural colors. This class is included with Museum admission. Purchase your ticket online.

Member Preview Day Artist Talk: Delilah Montoya Delilah Montoya’s works are grounded in the experiences of the Southwest, bringing together forms and practices. Her work combines photography, printmaking and installation to explore a wide range of subjects including women boxers, contemporary Casta portraits, sacred heart collotypes, and a mural-sized Guadalupana. Montoya’s work is included in the exhibition, Traitor, Survivor, Icon: The Legacy of La Malinche on view through September 4.
