New Mexico jewelry exhibits overarching similarities in raw material, form, and fabrication. New Mexico’s lapidary industry has always been the product of a diversity of cultural influences, reflecting an influx of artisans with different social and ethnic identities, relationships with peoples in surrounding regions, and long-distance trade for raw materials.

SATURDAY, JULY 14 1–4 P.M. SECOND SATURDAY AT CASA SAN YSIDRO: SIMON ORTIZ POETRY SLAM Acoma: Pueblo in the Sky, by Dr. Ward Alan Minge, is the only official history of Sky City the tribal council has sanctioned. In the revised addition of Minge’s book, awardwinning Acoma poet Simon Ortiz provides the foreword. Inspired by this connection, our event will feature the New Mexico Poetry

Society, and Albuquerque Poet Laureate Manuel Gonzalez and his daughter Sarita, who will discuss the importance of Simon Ortiz’s work on Native American literature, and share and create their own poems.

SUNDAY, JULY 15 2–3 P.M. TALK: PREHISTORIC JEWELRY IN NEW MEXICO Hannah Mattson, guest curator for the exhibition, uses archaeological evidence to introduce New Mexico’s prehistoric inhabitants’ jewelry traditions. The state has one of the richest and longest histories of

AUGUST PROGRAMS AND EVENTS WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1 10–11:30 AM FREE MOVIE DAY: I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO This documentary by filmmaker Raol Peck is based on an unfinished book by James Baldwin about the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends—Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words and archival material. Baldwin is the subject of a photograph by Dan Budnik in the exhibition, Art of Politics, closing August 12. Film is rated PG-13.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 2 6–7 P.M. CHATTER CONCERT: VARIATIONS This annual concert series presented by Chatter will feature the music of Mozart, Wolfe, Debussy, and Harbison.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 9 6–7 P.M. CHATTER CONCERT: RHYMES WITH SILVER This concert presented by Chatter will feature the music of Harrison, Gilbertson, Messiaen, Murail, and Tower.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 11 1–4 P.M. SECOND SATURDAY AT CASA SAN YSIDRO: KINSHIP THROUGH POTTERY Traditionally, pottery has been part of a social network of exchange relationships that play an active role in kinship within Native American communities. This event will feature a lecture by Dr. Lea McChesney about the circulation of Hopi pottery, and the social and cultural context of pottery production.

3RD THURSDAY In an evening focusing on American Jewelry from New Mexico, Albuquerque jeweler and comedienne Goldie Garcia performs stand-up, and jeweler Shane Hendren demonstrates how to create and engrave silver jewelry.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 2–4 P.M. A BOOK, A TOUR, AND A MOVIE: THE JOY LUCK CLUB The Museum is partnering with the Public Library to discuss the novel, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, an award winning novel exploring the relationships between mothers and daughters within the backdrop of the Chinese American experience. After the discussion, we will take a short tour of the exhibition, From Invisible to Visible: The ChineseAmerican Experience in Albuquerque which examines how the city’s Chinese American community came to be. See the movie at the Special Collections library on Thursday, September 27, at 4:30 p.m. This program is part of the Great American Read, an ambitious digital, educational, and community outreach campaign organized by PBS to get the country reading and passionately talking about books.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 2–3 P.M. TALK: THE TIFFANY CERRILLOS MINE Mine owner and jeweler Douglas Magnus shares his passion for the mine and its history. Learn about the significance of the mine, from prehistoric to historic times and its connection to Tiffany and Co. Magnus lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, conceiving original designs and finished products from turquoise, silver, gold, and other materials. His work is featured in the exhibition, American Jewelry from New Mexico.

AMERICAN JEWELRY FROM NEW MEXICO A survey of more than 300 spectacular objects; all aspects of jewelry adornment, from prehistory to the present, tell stories of diverse heritages, as artists live in concert, trade, and adapt with their neighbors. An accompanying book has been published by the Museum of New Mexico Press.

PAUL SARKISIAN A retrospective installation of work by Paul Sarkisian proves the power of continuous innovation, and the importance of mastery of technique before an artist can create masterpieces reflecting his vision.

ONLY IN ALBUQUERQUE See the story of our city from before written history to the present, set in an engaging, fun, and interactive atmosphere. Our story is told through four galleries: Spirited, Courageous, Resourceful, and Innovative, all connecting to a central gallery entitled Our Land. Hundreds of our city’s most beloved artifacts are featured, including the display case from Fred Harvey’s Alvarado Curio Shop, the eighth Duke of Alburquerque’s Repostero, and arms and artifacts from Coronado’s Entrada.

FROM INVISIBLE TO VISIBLE: THE CHINESE AMERICAN EXPERIENCE IN ALBUQUERQUE The exhibition explores how our city’s Chinese American community came to be and is a testament to a community’s resilience, perseverance, determination, and courage.

Common Ground celebrates the diverse creativity of artists living in, or influenced by, this region. Drawn from the Museum's permanent collection of almost 10,000 works, Common Ground includes masterworks by artists including Georgia O'Keeffe, Ernest Blumenschein, Raymond Jonson, Fritz Scholder, Luis Jimenez, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Diego Romero.
