MAGGIE BROWN FOUNDER, FLORA & VINE

I was born and raised in Dallas, TX. Me, my wonderful husband, and two pups now live in our little forever home, where our garage doubles as my floral studio. Love for flowers is definitely in my genes. My grandma, mother, and father greatly enjoy talking about and growing flowers. So flower names and flower arranging have always been second nature. Despite my upbringing, starting my career in flloral design was a total fluke. It was a wedding that started it all! A dear friend asked me if I could do the flowers for her wedding. I was very reluctant to do such an important event, but she assured me she trusted my floral eye wholeheartedly. Ever since then by word of mouth, wedding after wedding I have rapidly built a floral portfolio. I absolutely love what I do!

AS A CHILD, WHOM DID YOU ADMIRE? My mother, she showed me what real love was. I was raised watching her pour love and time into people. I saw how she helped so many women over the years and the impact that she had on their lives that still holds weight today. She taught me that loving people is a strength and a calling. I saw her transform so many lives including mine. She adopted me and never made me feel like I wasn’t her real child, on the contrary she treated me the same as her natural born children. That to me speaks volumes and to this day, she is my hero and I will forever be grateful to her!

MEET ANGELINE

As a child my parents taught me that where there is a will there is a way. They taught me that if you are determined you can achieve success in life, you just have to persevere! They always told me that no one owes you anything you have to work for it, and so I have and still do. They taught the value of working towards your goals in life and career and that the sky is the limit. I saw my parents build a life that was comfortable for us from nothing but sheer determination and hard work. They taught us the value of pushing forward and that there’s always a solution to a problem, you just have to think outside the box at times. My parents went from being dirt poor to building a construction business that was successful. My parents worked so hard to give us a life they didn’t have themselves and they did. ANGELINE PEDROSA

I started out in NYC practicing on anyone I could to gain skill and assisting other established makeup artist on editorial shoots. She is the queen of dewey radiant skin and I absolutely fell in love with her looks and techniques. I never liked the heavy foundation look and she taught me how to achieve beauty full coverage that still looks like skin in person and not just on camera. We all go through it and have been through it, you have to give it your all to be successful, to be a boss you have to willing and actually work harder than ever to achieve your goal!

I help women understand their skin, features and what looks go with them, I like to show them how to accentuate their best features without looking overly done up or plastic. I don’t just apply makeup I take the time to explain to each client why I’m doing certain steps so they understand what works with their features. DIAMOND: SYMBOL OF LOVE & ROMANCE The meaning of the word Diamond - very hard native crystalline carbon valued as a gem, not a very glamorous description of something so beautiful.

he word “diamond” comes from the Greek word “Adams,” meaning unconquerable. Diamonds are the hardest known substances on earth being one hundred and forty times harder than its nearest equal., which is how they earned their name. Because of their strength, they were initially used for such purposes as engraving other gems, such as sapphire, cameos, and for drilling holes in hard stone beads. In France in the thirteenth century only the king could wear diamonds. They were not used as jewelry in Europe until the late 13th century. They were born about 3.4 billion years ago and only became available to man through volcanic eruption about 70 million years ago. Not all diamonds mined are of gem quality, only about 50%. Even fewer are large enough to be polished into diamonds that are much bigger than the head of a match. Before the sixth century India was the only known source of diamond and the predominant source for over 2,000 years, until the mid-eighteenth century. Romans inherited the belief from Indian mythology. that diamonds had the power to ward off evil and wore talismans. In Greek mythology diamond were said to be tears of the Gods. Whatever the meaning the evolution of this dazzling jewelry is awesome. Who would believe that one of the softest materials on earth, carbon, changes into a beautiful sparkling diamond? Mind you this happens between 75 to 120 miles below the earth’s surface.

Often said to be a girl’s best friend. You can understand why, they have adorned kings, queens, and movie stars, dazzled us all by their beauty and when fashioned into an engagement or eternity ring the diamond becomes a symbol of love, romance and commitment. Although diamonds are perceived as a white colorless gem, they come in a spectrum of color, these are called “fancy” color diamonds. Diamonds are measured in Carat-weight. The standard measurement for diamond size is equal to 200 milligrams. A good one-carat diamond is one in a million. It takes 250 tons of ore to retrieve a 1 carat diamond (cut weight), awesome statistics that is why it takes several years of training before an apprentice is authorized to cut 1 carat diamonds. Cutting diamonds, as you would imagine is a highly skilled and specialized occupation. Unlike gold diamonds don’t carry a hallmark and that is why in

The report should confirm that: • The stone is a natural diamond • The carat weight of the stone • It’s color • It’s clarity • The cut of the diamond Diamonds are for eternity. A sign of wealth they can be passed from generation to generation growing in value never losing their appeal and bonding the link between past and future. 10 GREAT WINTER FASHION TRENDS THIS SEASON Insight into the latest winter fashions.

True to the season, soft snowy white shades seem to be a good choice for clothes that blend in with the winter theme. Another popular color to helps produce a sharp contrast is Black and various shades of bright black; while dull and muted grays give a nice warm and fuzzy touch and hues of rich red right through to mellow maroon are reflective of the season. For women, earthy colors ranging from the deep shades of olive, maroon, brown, deep blue’s to chocolate brown are colors set to form the trend. While for men, muted shades of pink, lavender, brick red, grey, deep shades of purple and black are what’s going to be setting the stage for fashion. HAIR Choosing the right hair style to go with the fashion and season can be a daunting task. You don’t want to be seen in last year’s styles and certainly not something that’s not the hottest rage now. So, if you’re trying to figure out the hairdo that’s the pick of the season by stylists and fashion models; it’s time to let you in on that little secret, apparently for women wearing your hair in the all-so-classic ‘Bob Cut’ seems to be the favored trend this season. In order to make the cut, men will have to aim to get their hair into the bushy straight-yet-carefully-disheveled look that gets tucked away into the tops of their mufflers.

H AT S If you like hats you’re in luck. This season hoods, hats, and caps are all the rage. Large, knitted beanies or those furry oversized Moroccan hats are all in this winter. The styles in vogue are hats that are either huge and puffy or tiny and pointed. Fur lined hoods blended into the garment are also turning heads this winter. CO AT S This season coats come with a nice thick mantle-like look that feature tousled sleeves and funneled collars. Other patterns include coats with widely placed collars and a rich furry texture. FA B R I C S The prevailing fabrics this season are fabrics that are overworked with several different effects across their surfaces. The fabrics are very solid or concrete with a sort of untamed natural feel blended with soft lusters. Prints around the winter theme are almost subtle while the focus in on rich exterior of the fabric. Lightweight wool or reworked cottons are the base for designs that will debut this winter.

ELLA Inspires Magazine

27

TEXTURE Complementing the feel and textures of fabrics the designs around these effects that are set to make the stage this winter, range from, long pleats, to subtle wrinkles and clearly visible overstitches, to the blistered and tangled effects. Cashmere worked in with regular wool and mohair is blended to give the fabrics a light yet visibly textured look. While some of the other fabrics are roughly cut to give a thatched heavily threaded effect. Most knits are made with heavily emphasized guages to draw out the raw protective feel against the winter chill. Denim is one of those fabrics that will probably be around forever. This winter, the theme is a slight gleam in the denim with an oxidized look. Look out for many ultra-cool texture effects!

SCARVES This season, trade in your old winter muffler for those large woolen scarves that can be draped over your shoulders like a stole. Embodied with various prints on dulled wool the scarf lends a casual yet protective loo to the wearer for both men and women.

FOOTWEAR Ankle length shoes in shades of silver and grey are this winter’s winner. They shriek elegance and comfort in a very casual sort of way. For women, transparent slippers laced with silver give an almost Cinderella effect.

JEWELRY

@IOANA0623 VIA TWE

Jewelry designs highlighting the winter season are marvelous add -ons; silver snowflake pendants and large broaches like a sprig of holly or mistletoe make some eye-catching accessories. Chunky silver bracelets and large but light earrings that dangle add to the effect.

Cindy Ring $49; Sandrine Wristlet $310;

You really do not have to own expensive designerwear to make a statement. Even your local stores will stock up on some of these new designs. This winter season ensure you treat yourself to some of these trendy fashions and go paint the town red!

Kate Leather Tote $317; Wellington Weekender $1,195

Foil Packet White Fish with Oven-Roasted Tomatoes

INSTRUCTIONS

SERVES 4

Foil packet cooking is the perfect cooking technique for days when you don’t feel like being in the kitchen. You can make the packets and toss them on the grill to enjoy a light and healthy meal without a lot of fuss. Even better, clean-up is as easy as tossing the packets into the trash when you are done. You can prepare delicious foil packet meals in your oven year-round. This recipe uses “white fish” fillets, so it’s perfect for halibut, cod, grouper, or whatever type of firm, white fish is available in your area. This technique can be used with other types of fish, lean protein, and veggie combinations, as well. slices of avocado, and the peppery bite of arugula come into play.

2. Place one fillet slightly off center on each sheet of foil. Top each fillet with an oven-dried tomato slice, two fresh or preserved halved lemon slices, as shown, one-half tablespoon fresh thyme leaves, and one tablespoon unsalted butter. If desired, lightly season with salt and black pepper, to taste. 3. To seal packet, fold aluminum foil in half over the fillets. Fold the 3 open sides, one at a time, over several times to seal the packet completely. The goal is to seal the packet tight enough to hold in the steam, but still allow enough room for the air to expand. 4. Place the foil packets in the pre-heated oven for 10 minutes, or place on hot grill over medium, direct heat for 8-10 minutes.

INGREDIENTS

• 4 6-oz. white fish fillets • 2 T. fresh thyme • 4 oven-dried tomato • 4 T. unsalted butter slices (instructions above) • Sea salt and black pepper, • 4 fresh or preserved to taste lemon slices, cut in half

36

1. To prepare indoors, place top oven rack in the center position and pre-heat oven to 400°F. Tear off 4 sheets of aluminum foil into sections large enough to fold over fillets, with another couple of inches on each side to seal.

5. Remove from oven (or grill) and cool slightly before carefully opening the foil packets. (Use caution, escaping steam will be very hot). Discard the lemon slices and serve immediately with your choice of sides. Enjoy!

WINTER SKINCARE by Martha Escobar, Beauty Editor

Each changing season has its charm, and we embrace the change. During the colder months, there is a sense of stillness and calmness. We can enjoy staying warm and cozy during the long and cold nights. However, low humidity levels, frigid wind, and indoor heaters can negatively affect the health and appearance of the skin. These conditions cause the skin to lose moisture, cause flaky and chapped patches and have an overall dull appearance. In addition, it can worsen skin conditions such as eczema. Therefore, during fall and winter months, give your skin gentle and nourishing care for a beautiful all year-round glow. Your skincare products should be richer, gentler, and sumptuous. Here are some suggestions to adjust your skincare regimen and product changes during the colder months..

IMAGE: @IOANA0623 VIA T WENT Y20

REPLENISH AND SEAL MOISTURE

44

Apply skincare products that are naturally nutrient-dense and highly moisturizing. Choose protective day and reparative night moisturizers. Look for moisturizers that contain many antioxidants such as vitamin C and E . Find heavier base moisturizers that do not have water. Why? Combined oil and water formulas are lotions and lightweight creams; these are great during the spring and summer months. However, rich creams are emollients that do not contain water; they help the protective barrier of the skin to retain hydration, replenish nutrients and keeps skin moisturized. Look for moisturizers rich in plant butters for complete skin nutrition, such as cacao, shea, and avocado. Find hydrating serums that target dryness that works in alliance with your day and night moisturizer. •

To keep skin supple, seal in hydration by applying serum, face oil, and moisturizer on damp skin. Boost skin’s suppleness and glow by applying moisturizing masks once a week or twice if you have dry skin.

BEAUT Y ORGANICA

GENTLE CLEANSING Exfoliating helps maintain the skin glowing by removing dead skin cells and helps the skin absorb moisture but avoid over-exfoliating your skin. It is best to limit to once or twice a week. Opt for ground oats or ground almonds; they offer a luxuriant exfoliating treatment that is gentle and soothing on the skin while replenishing moisture. •

Also, avoid skincare products that contain alcohol and harsh synthetic ingredients; these can dehydrate the skin, worsening the skin’s health and appearance. Instead, remove makeup with plant-based cleansing oils or balms they dissolve makeup and impurities for thorough cleansing without damaging the epidermis protective barrier.

WA R M S H O W E R S & B AT H S It may sound logical to take hot baths and showers during the cold month, but the hot water can remove the skin’s natural oils that protect and moisturize the skin. So instead, take shorter warm baths and showers. •

To keep your skin sublimely soft and supple, apply a rich and nutrient-dense body moisturizer while your skin is still damp to seal in moisture and deep nutrient delivery.

WHOLESOME NOURISHMENT Changing your skincare routine and what we feed the body according to the rhythm of the seasons is evenly essential. Stay hydrated, eat what is in season, add more whole grains, warming spices, herbal teas, legumes, and stews to keep your health and beauty balanced during colder months.

One of our favorites is Breckenridge.

We love that the town has maintained so

If you are looking for a true winter wonderland for your winter vacation, make the trip to Yellowstone National Park. Granted, winter in Yellowstone is a unique experience, but it might be just what you need! The cold temperatures (and I mean cold) mean few crowds and a great opportunity to see wildlife. The lower temperatures mean that the animals migrate to the lower elevations and often huddle around the warmth of the geysers.
