On November 18, 1995, East Cobb residents gathered for the first time to be a part of their very own parade and festival ‑ the EAST COBBER

Community Parade and Festival. This historic event was the first parade of this magnitude in East Cobb County. On September 9th we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of this community event. Over 1,200 people representing 61 groups from our community will march together down Johnson Ferry Road. Immediately after 56 non profits and small businesses have reserved space to exhibit at the festival. This issue lists all the parade participants, festival exhibitors, and corporate sponsors (pgs 10 15) to ensure that parade watchers and festival goers get the most out of this very happy day! After reading through all the people participating in the Parade and all the groups exhibiting at the Festival you won’t want to miss it! I look forward to seeing the smiling faces of the kids and teachers alike waving and throwing candy along the parade route! This happy day reminds me (and I hope for you) of what a wonderful community East Cobb continues to be after all these years!!

Can’t wait to see you there!

EAST COBB CIVITAN CLUB NAMES SERVANT’S HEART WINNER

The East Cobb Civitan Club is pleased to announce the 2023 Civitan International “Servant’s Heart Award” has been bestowed on Chris Brand who, since 2003, has served as the President and CEO of Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC). FODAC is the nation’s largest provider of low cost, or free refurbished home medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers and other durable medical goods. Over the years FODAC has provided thousands of disabled individuals with improved mobility. Brand has personally made a great impact during his tenure by adding opportunities to increase the distribution of durable medical goods in Cobb and surrounding communities.

The Servant’s Heart Award, a program of Civitan International, seeks to recognize and honor those “unsung heroes” from the nonprofit, local government, public education and other sectors who have dedicated their lives in service to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Other 2023 finalists nominated for this year’s Award are Jim Hamm, founder of Special Populations Tennis and Renate’ Elliott, Accessibility Services Supervisor for the Cobb County Public Library System.

Civitan International is a global organization impact ing lives at the grass roots level through local service clubs. WITH LIP ENHANCEMENT

Having a beautiful smile means something different to different people. For some, having a beautiful smile means straight, symmetrical teeth while others simply want them whiter. When we evaluate a person’s smile in our office, not only do we look at the color, shape, size, and the way they fit together, but we also look at the frame around the smile… the lips! For those who feel that their lips are too thin or are not symmetrical, some simple lip enhancements can be done to make the smile even

more esthetic. Both botulinum toxin derivatives (ie. Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport) and hyaluronic acid fillers (ie. Versa, Restylane, or Juvederm) can be used to enhance the shape of the lips.

At Cheek Dental, we use Xeomin around the borders of the lips to relax the muscles which allows the lips to roll outward slightly. This procedure is often called a “lip flip” and provides a naturally enhanced lip without adding any volume. Xeomin is a purified protein taken from botulinum toxin and is given in tiny doses

to achieve this lip enhancing effect with results that last 3+ months.

Versa is our filler of choice for plumping the lips. Versa is made of hyaluronic acid, a sugar derivative naturally found in your body that can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water…perfect for plumping the lips! The hyaluronic acid fillers in Versa can enhance the lips for 6-12 months and will naturally dissolve over time.

If you choose to enhance the frame of your smile with a lip flip, lip

plumping, or both, a trained medical professional should listen to your wants and expectations to customize a treatment that is right for you… whether you want to simply regain some lost volume or to have those Instagramworthy pouters!

UNSTOPPABLE VISION EAST COBB TEEN SHATTERS EXPECTATIONS

In the world of competitive sports, tales of triumph over adversity are often the ones that capture our hearts and minds. One such story exists right in East Cobb. Max Allemeier, a Senior at Walton High School is one of the nation’s most exceptional rowers despite being blind.

Born with a visual impairment, Max faced a unique set of challenges that might have discouraged many others. However, with his competitive drive and his family’s support, Max discovered Atlanta Junior Rowing Association (AJRA).

Max’s journey in rowing began when he participat ed in AJRA’s Summer Learn to Row Camp, where he discovered his love for the sport. Starting as a two day a week rower on the AJRA Rec team in Fall 2021, Max’s dedication and talent led him to join the competitive squad, rowing six days a week in the following spring.

Rowing, known for its emphasis on teamwork, strength, and precision, seemed like an unlikely choice for someone with visual impairment. However, its inclusivity and accessibility, made AJRA the per fect place for Max. As a visually impaired athlete, he appreciates that rowing doesn’t involve flying objects, making it a sport where he can compete on equal footing with others. The camaraderie among his teammates is another aspect that Max enjoys.

Although he has only been rowing for 18 months, Max has had the honor of competing

in prestigious events such as the Head of the Charles in Boston and the US Rowing Youth Nationals. His performances at Youth Nationals are particularly notable, winning gold in the Men’s Inclusive Double for two consecutive years. Max sees these victories as a chance to show others with disabilities that rowing is an accessible sport where they too can compete and excel. He hopes to inspire more individuals to participate in the event, envisioning a future with multiple heats and finals.

“They can be on that seat. They can have their hands on the oars,” said Max, “ and they can cross the finish line.”

With an eye on the 2028 US Paralympic Games, Max understands that the 2024 Games might be a bit ambitious with only a little over a year of rowing expe rience. However, his indomitable spirit and dedication the AJRA coaches believe that he has what it takes to achieve his dream.

AJRA Head Coach, Sarah Low, is excited for Max in the coming year and beyond, “Max is a high per former. He is in our top boat and he already has inter est from college teams,” she said. “We can’t wait to see what he is going to achieve.”

Atlanta Junior Rowing Association practices on the Chattahoochee River. Fall registration is now open.

THE STONEHAVEN SCHOOL CELEBRATES 20 YEARS AND GRADUATES ITS FIRST CLASS OF SENIORS

The Stonehaven School begins a year-long celebration of its twentieth anniversary, and will culminate the 2023-2024 school year with the first senior class graduation since the launch of its Upper School in 2020.

“We look back on the first twenty years of our school’s journey with joy and gratitude for God’s gracious blessings,” said Brett Edwards, Stonehaven’s Head of School. “The sacrifice, energy, and devotion of so many teachers, students, and families has helped Stonehaven develop an academic program committed to cultivating truth, goodness, and beauty in our students.”

Stonehaven began as Atlanta Classical Christian Academy in Smyrna in 2004. After leasing spaces from churches in Smyrna and Marietta, the school purchased two properties in the Fair Oaks community, where the Lower and Upper School campuses meet today. The long-term goal is to join both campuses together on one property.

When a group of 5th grade students met with administrators several years ago to request that the K-8 school launch a high school, no one foresaw that this class would graduate as seniors in the school’s 20th year. Now as both accomplishments are realized in the same year, Stonehaven has much to celebrate and a rich legacy to honor.

Kathryn Jackson, Upper School Dean of Academics, reflects: “The Stonehaven School is thriving today by the grace of God. Over the

last ten years, we have seen student enrollment triple. Three years ago, Stonehaven launched its high school program with a pioneering group of 9th grade students and families. It is with much joy that not only are we celebrating the 20th anniversary of our school but also our first graduating senior class! We look to the future with hope and expectation as God continues to build our school community.”

For additional information about Stonehaven’s history, visit stonehavenschool.org/about-us/school-history.html

Through stories, music, meditation, and prayer, they will honor and affirm the lived experiences of their members who identify as LGBTQ+ and their families. In the setting of a black box theater, congregants will share stories of their spiritual journeys during which they often faced scorn, contempt, and rejection by their families and religious institutions. These journeys ultimately led them to creating a beloved community where all are included, valued, and recognized as God’s love in the world. The event is free, and childcare will be provided.

Unity North Atlanta Church is well-known as an inclusive, diverse, spiritual community, supporting unique journeys of personal and spiritual growth. The LGBTQ+ and Friends Ministry is just one of their many groups that provide acceptance and support. Since 2013, local business and community leaders have led efforts to raise funds to honor and thank our East Cobb public safety heroes. In the fall, the officers and staff at Precinct 4 (Lower Roswell Rd.) are treated to a special night out with their spouse or significant other, and in the spring the committee hosts the annual Cobb County Fire Department’s annual awards banquet.

“Both events take place right here in East Cobb and we are confident that our community will once again rise to the challenge and provide the financial support needed to make these appreciation celebrations very meaningful for these special heroes. Fundraising was successful last year, however, there is still a need to raise additional funds to ensure both events’ continued success,” says Susan Hampton, co chair of the East Cobb Public Safety Celebrations committee.

“We are so grateful for the outpouring of support shown year after year from our community, and we are honored to partner with the Cobb County Public Safety Foundation. We also appreciate the continued support of co host sponsors, the East Cobb Business Association and the Cobb Chamber’s East Cobb Area Council,” says committee co chair Kim Paris.

Local businesses as well as families, schools, churches and civic groups are encouraged to make donations to this worthy cause. See the facing page for details on donation levels and sponsorship opportunities. For more information on the public safety celebrations, or for volunteer opportunities, call Susan Hampton at 404 218 6216 or Kim Paris at 770 367 0609.

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY

Say hello to Mary Davis Stegall, a 68 year old retired nurse who has been married for 41 years. Mary joined Sparkle in 2019 at 210 pounds and has been at her maintenance weight of 160 since 2020. She has lost a total of 50 pounds.

Mary, how did you learn about Sparkle a New You? A friend at church told me about Sparkle. I had lost and gained the same weight many times in various diets and programs. Nothing stuck for long. I was at my highest weight and just sick of it. I felt slow, tired, and hated how I looked. Before I was 45, my weight was healthy and not an issue. The Sparkle community of fellowship is energetic and encouraging.

What changed for you? I did my first 5k at the Polar Bear Run at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church with Sparkle Gals. It hurled me into a mindset of “I can do this.” I was steady at making changes to my eating and lost about a pound a week. I had confidence and embraced the idea of being accountable and TRACKING my food. It is not a diet, but “eating foods that love me back” is a saying in the Sparkle World. I use My Fitness Pal to track my food. In fact, I have over 1600 days of tracking. That is key to my loss and maintenance.

What have you learned on this weight loss journey? I learned I had a sensitivity to gluten, so I stayed away from that. I limit sugar and alcohol, but not completely. It is a lifestyle change that is ongoing. I have been able to keep the weight within a 5 pound difference for the last 3 years. This is my 5th year in Sparkle.

How have you been successful? One reason for my success is not just the fabulous, energetic Coach Jacynta Harb, but the Sparkle Community! We hike, walk, exercise, go Kayaking, some do Marathons and Ragnar Races. Wherever you are in your journey, someone in Sparkle is probably there too. Jacynta has wonderful informative, energetic meetings about many topics.

What type of exercises do you do? I do Strength training 4 5 times weekly via Zoom with Jacynta and other ladies. It is easy to roll out of bed and go to my hubby’s mancave where my weights are and just do it. My body composition has increased in tone and strength. I am coming up to my 69th Birthday in Oct and am pleased with what I have changed in my health and wellness. In fact, I have challenged myself, before

the end of 2023, to make my goal weight 155! I said it in public, so I am committed.

What has been your biggest challenge, Mary? My biggest challenge is the unhealthy foods that can be tempting. My husband and family have been very sup portive, which is a huge part of my success. Hubby says he has never tried so many new vegetables since I have been in Sparkle. He never complains and is a huge encouragement.

What are your top tips? Do not be afraid. Jump in with both feet and remind yourself that it is a journey, not a des tination. As you lose weight and clothes get too big, give them away, and get new ones. I never wanted a “fallback” outfit. If something gets tight, there’s my sign. Clean out the pantry of stuff you know sabotages your goals, and have an honest talk with family that this is important to you. The family will benefit from your good health and inspire others.

I love how I feel 50 pounds lighter. Who wouldn’t? It’s worth it. And when I do a 5K race (walking) and play with my 3 year old grandbaby, I am so glad Sparkle has come into my life.
