When you read this issue, the azalea bushes and cherry trees should be bursting with color against the beautiful blue Georgia sky. The sounds of chirping birds and whirring lawnmowers will serenade us. Signs that spring has sprung, and summer is just around the corner. Ahhh, summer . . . School will be out soon. How will your children pass the lazy, hazy days of summer? This April issue features our 25th Annual Day Camp Guide (pages 12-18). We have compiled a list of day camps offered in East Cobb County and/or a short drive away. While day camp can help your children learn a better backhand in tennis, acquire a stronger stroke in swimming, or get in touch with nature, the true payoff of camp will be apparent when your child becomes a bit more self-reliant, self-sufficient, and self-confident. I hope you love East Cobb as much as I do. In addition to helping our readers find things to do locally and featuring the do-gooders in our community, I also promote small businesses and their value to our local community. Since 1993, this magazine East-Cobb owned (I live here!)–has been dedicated to supporting and promoting small businesses in our exceptional community. This April edition exemplifies that mission -- from our front cover feature, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy, adding a student center for our youth to our advertisers, who are mostly local entrepreneurs serving our community with their special set of skills and hard work. Locally-owned businesses build strong communities by linking neighbors in a web of economic and social relationships and contributing to local causes. I am proud to be a catalyst for this “love local” movement!

I hope you support our efforts to “Love Local.” Follow us (and I’ll follow back, too!) on any of our EAST COBBER social media sites, or contact me directly if you think we could work together or if you know of any good stories. I’d love to hear from you! Happy Spring!

MT. BETHEL CHRISTIAN ACADEMY’S NEW ERA

The chilly, gray weather did nothing to dampen the mood at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy’s recent Student Center Groundbreaking Ceremony. The excited community gathered to commemorate not only dirt being moved at the Academy’s Upper School campus on Post Oak Tritt Road in Marietta, but the celebration of a mission that transforms lives and prepares students for life and eternity.

Attendees took in a soccer game and enjoyed food, games, and a shovel ceremony to kick off the construction of their muchanticipated 20,000 square foot Student Center, a multipurpose hub for students, staff, and families on campus. This facility, due to be completed in the spring of next year, will house state-of-the-art athletic facilities, cold plunge pools, health and wellness space, concessions, a press box, additional classrooms, office space, an event hall, and a balcony overlooking the recently constructed competition turf field. Arrow Field has become the favorite site for competitive sports like lacrosse, soccer, and a recently expanded football program.

Construction of the Student Center marks the completion of the $8.7 million phase one of the Building Up Capital Campaign. With new programs, enrollment at an all-time high, and the consolidation of elements from two campuses into one, a $40 million expansion will include new academic buildings, STEM and fine arts spaces, new dining facilities, a new performance gym, and more.

Mt. Bethel Christian Academy recently celebrated its 25th anniversary as a Christcentered JK-12 school. Initially founded as a K-8 school off Lower Roswell Road, it expanded to include Upper School on the Post Oak Tritt Road Campus ten years ago. Now, with its seventh graduating class

of seniors ready to head to first-choice schools with millions in scholarships, the school has established itself as a leader in Cobb County’s education landscape. The creation of football and other new athletic programs for grades four through 12, the MBCA Film Academy, the expansion of honors and AP offerings, and competitive STEM and robotics opportunities have created a stellar experience where students are mentored and cared for, fulfilling the mission focused on “academic excellence, spiritual growth, and a lifelong love and desire for learning.”

DICKERSON AND WALTON PERCUSSION ENSEMBLES TAKE THEIR SHOWS ON THE ROAD

Dickerson Middle School’s Percussion Ensemble had quite a holiday break late last year. Dickerson percussionists received an invitation to travel north to play at The Midwest Clinic at McCormick Place West in Chicago.

This was the second time the ensemble was invited to the conference; they also played in 2014. This makes Dickerson the only middle school percussion ensemble to have received multiple invitations to perform for each of the three most prestigious national music events for scholastic ensembles: The Midwest Clinic (2014, 2023), the Music For All Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival (2010, 2014, 2018), and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (2019, 2022). They were also named a National Winner in the 2023 Mark of Excellence/National Percussion Ensemble Honors Project.

At the Midwest Clinic, the 38 musicians performed eight pieces representing various styles and cultures. In addition to traditional concert percussion pieces, they showed their international chops with Japanese Taiko and Brazilian Samba. They performed the world premiere of the percussion arrangement of “Someday” by Walton High School’s Orchestra Director, Perry Holbrook, which was guest conducted by Professor She-e Wu from Northwestern University. Another highlight was their performance of “Kibo” by Andrea Venet, which featured a snare solo by Colin Brewer, Walton’s Assistant Percussion Director.

Dickerson Assistant Principal Janie Smalley joined the group and loved every minute of the trip. “I was honored to attend the Midwest Clinic this year and support our Percussion Ensembles. Watching their level of expertise and passion expressed during their performance was nothing less than extraordinary. Our students and music directors represented Dickerson Middle School and the Cobb County School District remarkably,” AP Smalley said proudly.

Scott Brown is the Assistant Band Director at Dickerson, as well as the Percussion Director at Walton. Nearly a month

after taking his middle school percussionists to Chicago, he was back on the road with his high schoolers, who played at the Georgia Music Educators Association In-Service Conference in Athens, Georgia, in late January.

This was the Walton Percussion Ensemble’s first performance for the GMEA Conference and took place on January 26th at The Classic Center. They played six pieces composed between 1925 and 2022 that represented a wide range of musical styles and influences, many of which were advanced, collegiate-level compositions.

“It was truly rewarding to be able to share the experience of preparation and performing for two prestigious events with the students at both Dickerson and Walton,” said Director Brown. “Both ensembles presented truly fantastic performances, and the students were incredible ambassadors for our community and the Cobb County School District.”

Two senior students—Zachary Gorman and Sarah Clark— were featured soloists during the GMEA event. Zachary played a xylophone solo on “Xylophonia” written by Joe Green and was accompanied by John Lawless, Director of Percussion Studies at Kennesaw State University. Sarah played a marimba solo on “Marimba Spiritual,” written by Minoru Miki.

Many in the audience were brought to tears by their final piece, a stirring performance of “Thy Kingdom Come” written by Jacob Remington. The piece is Remington’s attempt to mimic the power and majesty of the last two chapters of the biblical book of Revelation, and the students’ performance concluded with a handbell choir as the last sounds of the show.

Dickerson and Walton Percussion Ensembles will be featured at the annual “Evening of Percussion” on April 11th at Walton High School at 7pm. Two days later, on April 13th, they will perform during the Southeastern Percussion Ensemble Symposium, hosted at Walton.

FAMILY SALON KIDS KUTS OF EXCELLENCE

MEET SABRA DUPREE, A HAIRSTYLIST WITH HEART AND GIFTS TO SHARE

In April 2024, Sabra Dupree will celebrate her proudest professional accomplishment – 25 years of business for Family Salon Kids Kuts, located at 2323 Shallowford Road, Suite 113 in Marietta. Sabra’s salon is nestled between Bruster’s Ice Cream and Domino’s Pizza . Initially a kids-only spot, Family Salon has evolved into a versatile space for all ages.

Originally from Chicago and one of ten kids, Sabra emphasizes family values. She credits the success of Family Salon to the support of family, friends and coworkers. With the business expanding, Sabra is looking to hire two team players who align with the salon’s family-oriented style.

“We’re looking for someone who wants to grow with us,” says Sabra.

LEGACY OF LOVE

Alongside celebrating the 25th anniversary, Sabra honors the memory of her late husband, Danny Dupree , who passed away in November 2022. The couple, married for 36 years, fell in love in 1980s Georgia. Danny was an automobile refinisher for Atlanta Road Body Shop for 20 years. Sabra attended Chattahoochee Technical college and beauty school. She styled hair out of the house before opening the Kids Kuts salon with Danny in April 1999. A local dream became reality with the support of East Cobb neighbors and friends. Danny’s legacy continues through Family Salon’s love and dedication to serving the community.

Sabra and Danny have two adult sons, Dillon Dupree and Nathan Dupree . Both sons were actively involved in sports and extracurriculars at Lassiter High School . Dillon, now a Sales Manager with Ember Capital, served in The United States Marine Corps. He and his fiancé, Michaela Mishkin, are parents to Broderick Dupree, affectionately known as Bubba Brody. Nathan, who earned a master’s degree in business assurance, played baseball on scholarship at Kennesaw State University. Nathan and his fiancé, Brandy Welch, are parents to Avery Dupree.

Beyond the salon, Sabra contributes to raising her grandkids and enjoys riding her Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Despite significant interior design changes, Family Salon remains a pulse of the East Cobb community, steadfast in treating customers like family.

“This team of women has surrounded me with so much love and compassion over the last 15 months,” shares Sabra. “I can’t tell you how good I feel about my community.”

MEET THE FAMILY SALON

The team at Family Salon consists of six professional hairstylists, among them Angela Whitner and the manager, Savannah Hunter, who have dedicated 15 and 9 years of service with Sabra, respectively. Andrea Koester, Magnolia Lowe, and Maliyah Mack complete the team.

“She’s amazing and I love her,” says Andrea. “I’m lucky that I landed here.”

Family Salon caters to all hair types and styles, offering cuts, color, and thermal straightening. As a Global Keratin hair salon, they also provide Tranont Glow liquid collagen.

Sabra’s team cares deeply about new and returning customer satisfaction and education. This was demonstrated in her efforts to help hairdressers nationwide reopen safely during the COVID-19 pandemic, earning Sabra an interview with CNN.

“I still wake up every day and want to go to work,” confesses Sabra. “That’s crazy. Most people hate their jobs. Everything I do is different every single day and that keeps it exciting for me.”

Family Salon welcomes both appointments and walk-ins Monday through Saturday, with affordable and transparent pricing available on mykidskuts.com. To book an appointment, call (770) 924-4950 and experience a quarter-century of kindness, expertise, and commitment at Family Salon.

SPARKLE AND STYLE FASHION SHOW FOR SPECIAL NEEDS

There is a new event in town with ample fashion, food and fun and all benefitting an important organization serving those with special needs in our community. The “Sparkle and Style” Fashion Show and Luncheon is scheduled for Saturday, May 11 at Holy Family Catholic Church and benefits Special Needs Cobb, a nonprofit providing group homes and respite care to adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Funds raised will support programming and renovations at the 23 residences, 22 of which are in Cobb County.

Guests will enjoy fashions from Apricot Lane Boutique at Merchant’s Walk, a delicious luncheon and can shop a variety of items at the silent auction. “We are planning an elegant ladies luncheon that pampers guests with a little get away from the routine without leaving town”, said Carolyn Polakowski, an East Cobber who is chairing the event. “Apricot Lane Boutique will be sharing their latest arrivals and the auction items we are receiving are amazing. I think it would be a great Mother’s Day celebration for moms and daughters to come together”, commented Polakowski. “Guests can enjoy a glass of bubbly and the new spring clothing lines at a ticket price, $35, that is very affordable. Most importantly, some very deserving individuals will benefit from the event proceeds.”

Special Needs Cobb, founded in 1956, provides resources, respite, and residential care options to families with adults and children with developmental disabilities. Their mission is to transform and enhance the lives of individuals with special needs through group housing, respite care, caregiver life-planning workshops, and resources for parents so that they have the support tools needed to provide the best possible future for their loved ones with special needs.

The Sparkle and Shine fashion show and luncheon is Saturday, May 11, 11am-1pm at Holy Family Catholic Church, 3401 Lower Roswell Road in Marietta. Sponsorships and tickets are still available. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.specialneedscobb.org.

INDIVIDUALIZED GUITAR LESSONS

Compared to prerecorded videos, guitar lessons with a live instructor are generally much more effective. One of the reasons is that the instructor can tailor each lesson to that particular student’s needs.

Unfortunately, many guitar instructors use canned lessons—lessons that are premade and designed to reach as many people as possible, rather than to reach one particular student as well as possible. This type of approach could work for certain students, but for most students it may be only marginally beneficial—and it could actually be a hindrance for some.

It does, however, make the instructor’s job easier.

But for the student, individualized lessons help them reach their goals as a player, faster—assuming the instructor has looked into the background and objectives of the student, and has observed the student playing to assess their strengths and weaknesses, and factored all of that into each lesson as it’s being prepared.

I’m Stephen from Stephen’s Guitar Lessons, and since 2010 I’ve been honing my skills as an independent guitar instructor. I’ve been playing guitar since 1987, performing on countless stages and in many recording studios; I’ve also spent years studying not just my instrument, but music education as well. I provide unparalleled support for all of my students, and I craft each lesson for each individual student—focusing on music the student enjoys so that playing their guitar is a rewarding experience from the beginning.

Contact me today to set up your free introductory lesson, and see the difference for yourself! Visit StephensGuitarLessons.com for details.

Northside Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers Honored for Years of Service

Northside Hospital honored its Atlanta Auxiliary volunteers at the 43rd annual Auxiliary Luncheon last month. More than 110 Auxilians attended the event, which recognized the volunteers for their dedicated service to the hospital.

Northside’s Auxiliary began serving the Atlanta hospital and community in 1969 with 100 volunteers. Today, the organization has 325 active volunteers, from ages 14-99 years, who work in more than 30 departments and have given more than 47,800 hours of service to Northside in the past year.

This year’s luncheon, themed “Volunteers are the key to success,” honored volunteers celebrating anniversaries and other very special milestones. The event also recognized the Auxiliary’s newly-elected officers, who are eager to continue the organization’s sterling reputation.

Jane Moore, of East Cobb, was recognized for her 15 years of service to the Northside Hospital-Atlanta Auxiliary. Moore volunteers as an escort, delivering flowers to patients and transporting them to their rooms and cars. East Cobber Michaelle Arkin, also was recognized at the event as the Auxiliary’s president-elect.

“Again this year, we have accomplished our mission to provide compassionate support and quality service to patients, families and visitors, as well as funding for special projects which benefit the hospital,” said Lisa Angel, Auxiliary president and East Cobb resident. “I am humbled by the dedication of our volunteers. It is a privilege and an honor to work with such a conscientious group of caring people.”

Angel presented Northside with a check for $344,289, raised from all of the Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts in 2012-2013 including sales in the Gift Shop, commissions on baby photo sales and several other sales to employees. The money was used

to fund Northside’s annual Camp Hope for adult cancer patients, additional online resources for maternity patients, scholarships to those interested in the medical field, support programs and services for cancer patients and families in the Special Care Nurseries, the hospital’s Healing Sounds (music therapy) program and much more. In all, the Auxiliary money supported more than 25 departments of the hospital.

Additional accomplishments of the Auxiliary over the last year include:

• The Auxiliary hosted 105 “volunteens” in various areas of the hospital.

• Volunteers delivered 3,559 flower arrangements and 2,728 pieces of mail to patients, and transported 5,752 patients.

• The Auxiliary’s Community Health Education Program (CHEP) performed 42 puppet shows to more than 4,000 children.

• Happy Tails (pet therapy) volunteers made more than 550 visits to patients and their families in the High-Risk Perinatal and Medical-Surgery units.

• Volunteers made 2,655 items, including baby blankets, caps, baby booties and scarves, for babies in the hospital’s Special Care Nursery and patients receiving cancer treatment.

• Network of Hope volunteers visited with and offered support to 540 breast and other cancer patients. They also made 423 follow-up calls to recently discharged breast cancer patients.

“The Northside Hospital Auxiliary has always been and remains an essential component to hospital’s longstanding success,” said Bob Quattrocchi, president and CEO of Northside Hospital. “There are no limits to the extraordinary contributions our volunteers make to our patients, visitors and staff each and every day; we greatly appreciate all that they do.”

For more information about the Northside Hospital-Atlanta Auxiliary, call 404-851-8707 or visit www.northside.com/volunteers.

10-YEAR-OLD’S CANCER DIAGNOSIS SPARKS FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Only a few things make Nick Colley nervous. As an outgoing fourth-grader at the Queen of Angels Catholic School , cancer treatments and public speaking engagements are small potatoes compared to playing in a high-stakes baseball game.

Nick’s parents, Ben Colley and Melanie Colley, were stunned when their 10-year-old son was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia or ALL, a type of blood cancer on July 18, 2023.

Upon hearing the news, Nick’s community and East Side Baseball Association teammates rallied around the Colley family with cards, care packages, Uber Eats, and DoorDash orders, and fundraising efforts. Their assistance was needed as Nick immediately began chemotherapy treatments at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

Ben, a Walton High School alum, feels thankful to raise his family in the community that built him. Nick has two sisters - Sarah Kate, 8, and 6-year-old Annie. Together, the Colley family enjoys playing sports, cheering for the Atlanta Braves and taking Archie, their 2-yearold Cavapoo, to the park.

Melanie says their family has turned hard suffering into fundraising fuel. Friends and family purchased custom-designed T-shirts and gold shoelaces to show support. Although Nick is grateful to be in remission, he still has a long way to go with treatments.

This year, Nick will make his modeling debut in the 14th Annual Rally on the Runway set for Friday, April 12.

Benefiting Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research , this invitation-only fashion show is set to take

place at the Georgia Aquarium . Atlanta Falcons players led by team captain and two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Grady Jarrett will walk a runway arm-in-arm with childhood cancer fighters and survivors while wearing the latest spring fashions from Dillard’s .

In addition to the fashion show, the event will feature a silent and live auction, and rally kids will share their stories with attendees. Rally Foundation founder and CEO, Dean Crowe , will interview Nick on stage about his childhood cancer journey and fundraising efforts.

“Nick understands the value of research,” explains Crowe. “He’s a fundraiser at heart and he is hilarious. He sets goals, he meets them and then he goes past them. He’s a super fun kid with a big personality.”

In 2005, Crowe and her husband, Reid Crowe, founded Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research – a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises awareness and funds for childhood cancer research to help physicians and scientists find better treatments and cures.

To date, Rally has given $35 million in childhood cancer research grants and secured more than $211 million from the U.S. Department of Defense Medical Research Program for cancers in children, adolescents, and young adults.

If Nick’s story inspired you, support his fundraiser at rallyfoundation.org/nicks-cancer-journey or contact Rally Foundation’s volunteer coordinator Amy Samsury at Amy@rallyfoundation.org. RECYCLING IN OUR SCHOOLS

Last year the East Cobber featured an article about Debunking Recycling Myths. This year the East Cobb County Council (ECCC) of PTA’s has an opportunity to discuss recycling myths specific to our schools.

POP-QUIZ! True or False?

1. It would cost our schools money to recycle. FALSE

All schools in Cobb County have recycling dumpsters on campus. These are included in the Sanitation & Recycling Program managed by Cobb County School District.

2. Schools can only recycle paper. FALSE School recycling works exactly as home recycling. Schools can collect paper, cardboard aluminum, tin and plastic 1 & 2 and put in the recycling dumpster.

3. It would be a lot more work to collect recycling. FASLE Recycling in schools does not create more waste, it’s the exact same amount of material. It’s simply that non-recyclable materials go to the trash dumpster (or compactor) while recyclable materials go to the recycling dumpster (located right next to the trash dumpster).

The Environmental Education Committee for the ECCC of PTA’s is committed to helping all of the 35 schools in our council launch, review or enhance their recycling program. A few schools getting A’s in recycling.

Sope Creek Elementary School hosted a drive for non-working holiday lights and collected 90lbs!! They delivered to ABC Recycling where they received a small amount for per pound.

East Side Elementary School, in addition to classroom recycling, collects snack packages (chips, goldfish, etc.) through a program with TerraCycle. The Green Team collects on Friday mornings and have diverted 146lbs of wrappers from this landfill this school year alone!

Mount View Elementary School has collected 5300lbs of mixed recycling (that’s 1800 gallons of gasoline avoided, which is like removing 3 ½ cars from the road for a year!).

Hightower Trail Middle School has a clothes & shoes collection bin that keeps these materials out of the landfill and serves as an ongoing fundraiser equaling hundreds of dollars.

Is your school recycling? If not, reach out to the ECCC of PTA’s for ideas and advice on how to get started.

If you are recycling but would like to up your game here are a few resources and events:

My Green Earth, Inc (www.mygreenearth.org) has a Classroom Recycling Impact Tracker that will help you understand how many pounds you are saving from the landfill.

Keep Cobb Beautiful (www.cobbcounty.org/ keep-cobb-beautiful/programs/educational-programs) has various environmental presentations that teachers/administration can request to schedule at their school.

Recycling Roundtable. Friday, April 26th @ 11am – Unity North Atlanta Church. Interactive and informative panel of local experts from across the county to provide you with the latest information on recycling best practices, and answer all of your questions about the recycling process. Space limited so please register in advance, www.mygreenearth. org/events.

ECCC PTA School of Information. Wednesday, May 8th @ 9am – Location TBD. The Environmental Education Committee will have a breakout session focusing on classroom and school-wide recycling, butterfly gardens, hard-to-recycle collects and more. Email environmentaled@ ecccpta.org for more info.

Jamey Moran is Cheers to Recycling, founder and helps educate young people in the area as the Environmental Education Committee (EEC) Chair for East Side Elementary PTA. She is also the EEC Chair for the East Cobb County Council PTA. Morna is also Board Member for the local nonprofit My Green Earth (www.mygreenearth.org). According to their website, they are “on a mission to make Cobb County the #1 most sustainable county in all of Georgia.”

WHAT IS YOUR SMILE WISH?

If you had a magic wand and could change one thing about your smile, what would it be? The most common answers we hear from our patients are that they wish their teeth were “straighter” and “whiter.” If you feel the same way about YOUR smile, then you might consider clear aligner therapy. Clear aligner therapy, such as Invisalign, is an orthodontic alternative to traditional braces that uses a series of custom aligners to move teeth into their proper positions gradually and gently without the use of unsightly brackets and wires. This easy process will not only help you achieve the more attractive smile you desire, but also provides many healthrelated benefits.

Do your gums bleed or have they receded exposing the root and/or do you build-up a lot of tartar on your teeth? When teeth are misaligned (crowded, gapped, or rotated,) it is harder to remove the plaque and bacteria that form around them. The presence of this plaque and bacteria can lead to inflamed and/or receding gums, pockets developing between the teeth and gums (which can harbor

more bacteria resulting in further gum disease), bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss. When teeth are properly aligned, it is easier to brush and floss the teeth and gums effectively, resulting in better removal of the plaque and bacteria that contribute to gum disease, tooth decay, and even heart disease.

Are your teeth sensitive, worn, or chipped or have you had to have crowns placed on many of them due to cracks? Besides simply straightening misaligned teeth, clear aligner therapy can also correct many abnormal bite relationships, such as open bites, overbites, underbites, or crossbites. In each of these abnormal bite relationships, the upper and lower teeth fail to come together properly causing the teeth to collide rather than glide against each other. This can put extra stress and pressure on the teeth and jawbone, resulting in gum disease, receding gums, indentations at the gum line (abfractions), cold sensitivity, worn, chipped or fractured teeth, and/or tooth loss. Aligning the teeth and correcting the bite puts the teeth in their most stable

position reducing their risk of wear and trauma.

Unlike conventional dental braces, clear aligner therapy is designed to be comfortable and convenient. After an examination with your dentist (which should include x-ray evaluation to ensure the bone around the teeth is healthy), a series of custom aligners are created. Each aligner is worn for two weeks for approximately 22 hours a day, before advancing to the next aligner. Because the aligners are removable, you can brush and floss your teeth normally and can remove your aligners to eat and drink. An additional benefit of clear aligner therapy is that the aligners can be used as custom bleach trays allowing you to bleach your teeth while straightening them!

Close monitoring by your dentist is critical to ensure the teeth are moving as planned. Typically, your dentist will want to check your progress every 6-12 weeks. There are mail order clear aligners out there that SOUND easy and may cost a little less, but without direct dentist involvement in your

care, there is a much higher risk of bone loss during treatment or improper movement of the roots of the teeth which can be seen only in x-rays.

If you are interested in seeing if Invisalign is right for you, please visit us at Cheek Dental for a consultation. Whatever your age, misalignment, or bite problem is, straightening your teeth can boost your self-confidence by giving you the smile of your dreams all while knowing you are also improving your oral and physical health!

SPARKLE SUCCESS STORY

Jacynta Harb, CEO of Sparkle Wellness and Fitness, shares her story.

I have lived in East Cobb since 2001 and absolutely love living here. I am grateful to be a part of this thriving community.

Growing up in a family of 10 brothers and sisters allowed me opportunities to learn. I grew up with parents who always loved serving, helping, and were both great encouragers. My father was a schoolteacher and was admired by our community. My mother was the queen of sparkle and spread it wherever she went, whether in the grocery or laundromat. She was always willing to share her beautiful smile and help others feel better.

You may be asking, “What does this have to do with a success story?”

This is how I became the CEO and founder of Sparkle Wellness and Fitness 10 years ago.

Growing up in a small town, I had big dreams. I knew I had gifts and talents to help people thrive. What I did not know was what God had planned for me when I opened my business, transforming lives and families forever.

In April 2013, my brothers surprised me for my 40th birthday. After the party, they asked me, “Why don’t you start your own business?” That day changed my life. They obviously believed in me and when you believe in someone, it can transform them forever. I have the picture from that day in my Roswell office. I chose to be fearless and launch my own business with my husband Scott’s constant support.

Watching my parents, I realized I had gifts they possessed; teaching and encouraging, which led to Sparkle. Each day, I absolutely cannot wait to help people live a life that makes them feel like rock stars. You have read about many of them in this magazine.

Perhaps you are reading this and thinking, “I want to start my own business. I am ready to make my next move, but what if I fail?” Go for it and watch yourself fly. With great risk, there is great reward. With a belief in yourself, willingness, and determination to do the work, your dreams will become reality.

What is most important is that you believe in yourself. Then, anything is possible. God has given me this fulfilling dream. When God gives you a dream, he circumstantially provides the open doors to make it come true. All you need is faith and courage to walk through that open door.

The magic behind Sparkle Wellness is my Ambassador team of 22 ladies, who have been very successful on their journey and have been using their gifts and talents to spread Sparkle to our community. This makes the company unique and powerful.

I believe no one is successful without a success team, and mine has truly lifted me, as well as countless clients. They serve in touching, meaningful, and memorable ways. I have seen them drive others to cancer treatments, write beautiful encouraging notes, and wipe the tears from each other’s faces as life setbacks are often more than we can handle. Ambassadors will joyfully support clients’ first 5K race. They enthusiastically celebrate each other’s accomplishments, big and small.

On the Sparkle horizon, we continue spreading our Sparkle to people around the world. My personal goal is to have an app, write a book, and create a podcast.
