PUBLISHER’S NOTE

On the Cover

Now that the presents are all unwrapped and Santa’s job is finished for another year, it’s time to move on to escorting in the new year. Every January 1 holds so much potential and hope for a fresh start, new beginnings and planning what those New Year’s resolutions will be for ourselves. Of course, the resolutions such as eating better, getting more exercise and giving up smoking are usually on top of the list, many people also have philanthropic goals, such as getting more involved in the community. Hopefully, the articles in this edition will help you get 2014 off to a great start. Our Do Good Guide (page pages 10-14) which features local nonprofits in need of volunteers and donations should help you sustain that holiday spirit of charity throughout the year. If you are looking to sweat yourself a Beyonce-like body in the gym or have the simple goal of improving your health, check out our expanded Health & Wellness Guide on pages 42-57. The beginning of a new year is a time for looking ahead, with a degree of hope and optimism. As we head into a new year, consider the following: “If you woke up this morning with more health than illness you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week. If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation you are ahead of 500 million people of the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75% of this world.

On EAST COBBER’s cover this month is Fellowship Christian School’s newly appointed Head of School, Kathryn M. Teston. She comes to this position with over 28 years experience in education. For Kathy, being head of a school with approximately 850 students, grades prekindergarten through twelfth is a joy! She loves being in a position of influence, making an impact on the lives of students, teachers, administrators and parents alike, encouraging them in their God-given

If you can read this message you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over 2 billion people in the world that cannot read at all. Have a good day. Count your blessings, and pass this along to remind everyone else how blessed we all are.” I received this inspiring passage from my son’s preschool teacher years ago, who received it from someone else via the internet. Who knows where, when or how we will be inspired. It is my hope that the stories and information contained in this and every EAST COBBER inspire you and lift your spirits.
