brief

by the editor “This is Volume 8 of International Contemporary Masters. Clearly, the publication is a success. Perhaps it is worth considering what we were trying to accomplish when we set out eight years ago, what we have achieved, and how. We started out with the idea of producing an annual chronicle, a cross-section, of what is happening in the fine arts all over the world, from year to year, showcasing in each volume the work of about 200 noteworthy artists. We wanted to make the range of genres and media, and also the geographic provenance of the artists, as broad as possible, so the overall “image” that emerges is truly world wide. In fact, this became the name of our company and the general orientation of all our activities. Now we are entering our ninth year, and the response from artists, art lovers and art professionals has been overwhelmingly positive. Each volume seems, to us at least, even richer than the one before it, and nearly two thousand artists have participated. Cumulatively, a tremendous vista of art has emerged. Two overriding conclusions have emerged. One is that there are no more dominating schools or movements of art. There is simply too much variety and too many different directions for any particular perception to prevail. The other is that noteworthy art is being produced in literally every corner of our planet, and often under very difficult circumstances. More than ever, it is clear that art is one of the most elemental human expressions and activities. So what can be the function now of a curator when the sway of arbiters seems so relative and so limited? We would say there are two directions: one, to document and present a particular and limited facet, and the other, which we have chosen from the beginning, to embrace this huge diversity, and to endeavor in some manner to present it, to make some sense of it. As an editorial orientation, we keep our own intervention in these books to a minimum, to the act of selection. Apart from some minimal information about each artist, we prefer to let the works speak for themselves. We invite the reader to prepare for a tumultuous journey on a vast river!”

intro

by the curator “We are very excited to offer Volume 8 of International Contemporary Masters; a very distinctive and comprehensive collection of modern masterpieces. As with every volume, our curatorial and editorial staff have spent long hours examining literally tens of thousands of works submitted by thousands of artists. Though an extremely laborious project, the reward of working with hundreds of artists is very significant to me. Each and every image in this collection was specifically selected and placed, not only for its dynamism and uniqueness, but also in order to achieve the creation of a comprehensive cross-section of contemporary practices. The art of curation consists of many elements, but as with art in general the foremost rule is that there are no rules. As difficult as this makes the role of the curator, it also allows for pure aesthetic sensibility to predominate. For all the importance of art history and contemporary art discourse, for me what is most important in selecting a work is that it speaks to me in a simple, natural way and compels me to place its aesthetic qualities in my sensory archive. In other words, the connection between a work of art and a viewer is more rooted in emotion than in context. Everyone is entitled to feeling passionate about a work of art and aesthetic opinions can only be grounded on pure freedom. What is fascinating in compiling such a large collection of artworks is how unique the world of each artist is. Each presentation is only a tiny window into the mind of the artist and I always feel how insufficient any number of pages is to expose the scope of each artist’s creativity. I hope you will share my feeling of admiration for these inspired individuals who with their creative attitude, sensibility and dedication to their process offer us such influential compositions.!

R. W. Firestone United States

Robert W. Firestone was born in 1930 in Brooklyn, New York. In 1946, at the age of 16, he enrolled at the University of Syracuse and in 1951 graduated from the University of Berkeley. After which he began to paint and immediately revealed, along with his interest in psychology, a strong and persistent passion for art. During this period, he executed a series of landscapes seen in the course of his travels, as well as, while treating patients at the limits of emotional suffering, he completed numerous portraits of friends, patients and colleagues in a style which can be defined as “humanitarian expressionism”. Working on his Ph.D, which he obtained in 1957, his attention was attracted by the theories of Sigmund Freud and Otto Rank on one hand, while on the other, the life and work of the great artists Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gaugin. He has over the years published numerous articles and books on his psychoanalytical theories, forming the “conviction of the importance of the individual and his personal liberty, associated with a deep comprehension of the human condition”. Finally, he realized another of his great passions, the sea, in which he found he could most naturally live in the ideal condition of freedom. In the early 70’s, Firestone and a group of his friends bought the “Vltava”, an 80-foot schooner, and thus began many long voyages which continue even today. With his family and friends he has searched for a life full of coherence with the values of integrity, honesty and generosity. His activity as a theorist in psychotherapy and his intense expressive research has lead him in recent years to dominate masterfully the language of digital artistry. All of the inspiring motives of his creative work derive from his own human and professional experiences, as is evident in the cycles of works he has completed over the last ten years. In early 2000, he began to exhibit his work in international galleries and museums, as well as in public and private collections.

“As a clinical psychologist, author and psychotherapist, I have devoted myself to helping people face their personal demons, know themselves and triumph over their psychological pain and suffering. As an artist, I have attempted to live a creative life, searching and striving for meaning and beauty. Working with the computer as a creative instrument, I have attempted to invent something feelingful, sensitive and beautiful out of an unfeeling machine. The computer, like all of man’s technological achievements, has been used for both good and evil machinations. Life and creativity are the antithesis of cynicism and despair. Intimidated by the issue of death and dying, we often turn our backs on life and feeling, but instead we could choose to embrace life. We are, each one of us, fragile and helpless, and are therefore all brothers. Ideally, that would imply empathy, tolerance and generosity toward our fellows. I live and share life closely with a multitude of people and try to exemplify a sense of love, enlightenment and joy in being and becoming. My art and my insights into life are a very personal offering to others, a simple sharing of my feelings and perceptions. In my artistic productions, I utilize a variety of images, impressions and approaches to address the fullness and complexity of my experience. In all of my work, I try to blend color and composition into an enjoyable visual adventure. My artistic endeavors are characterized by the use of a variety of vivid and vibrant colors. Colors are important because they symbolize our feelings and emotions. As a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, I have helped countless people to challenge their psychological defenses and achieve close, loving relationships. Facing up to their anxieties and confronting their personal demons allowed them to recover their deepest feelings and become more fully alive. As an artist, I wish to inspire a deep feeling for people as well as an appreciation for aesthetics. In both fields, I aspire to make an important contribution to people’s appreciation of life and personal fulfilment.” - R.W. Firestone

Di McIntyre Australia

Born in Chinchilla, 1964, Di McIntyre has spent her lifetime on the land. Her art career began in 2005, and has received acclamation in solo and joint exhibitions, agricultural shows and festivals on the Western Downs, Brisbane and New York. Her works belong to private and public collections in Australia, America, New Zealand and Hong Kong, China. “I draw inspiration from the raw colour of the land to create contemporary representation of the rural environment. It is when I am at one with this environment that I feel the strongest connection to our land, and aim to reflect this in the body of work I create. Watercolours, ink, pastel and gauche are used to represent the rich colours of outback Australia and embellishment is taken in the freedom of collage to create perspective and depth of meaning. For me, painting provides a therapeutic escape from everyday life...just a faraway thought upon picking up the brush and becoming consumed by the vibrant colour of the west.

Richard V. Stanley Canada

Born in London, England, Richard Stanley now resides in Canada. His work includes a variety of subject matter, executed in different mediums, from painting to sculpture or a combination of both. These magnificent works range from miniature to mural and can be found in private and corporate collections, internationally. The artist is also represented in the regular pages of this volume. “…As long as I can remember I have drawn or painted something, somewhere. Whatever artistic qualities I possess influenced my education and the years that followed, creating opportunities in the fields of drafting, graphics and industrial design. By combining this experience with my personal interest in our natural world, I was inspired to create a series of images illustrating concerns for the future of our planet’s wildlife. Those early watercolours gave me a voice and allowed me to enter the world of fine art, shaping what has become a lifetime of study and travel.”

Martha exhibits and sells her work internationally; currently, in 2014 at the Cutting Edge and the Florence Art and Design Week exhibits both in Florence, Italy. In addition, Martha’s work has been selected in juried shows, including the Blossoms II- Art of Flowers national touring exhibition to museums throughout the USA, 2011-2012; 2012 the Disney Master’s artist exhibit; 1995 International Colored Pencil Society’s annual exhibition. Her body of artwork is in multimedia with a wide range of subject matter. Including the lost method the Old Masters of drawing with metals. Art critics have described her work as, “There is an understated incandescence to the images that is both contemporary and classic all at once. Her works related so strongly to the very concept of perception; your style places you in an artistic realm that is somehow dream-like, almost surreal, yet not quite there, as if some ghostly memory from a far-away place; yet somehow entirely familiar a vision that resonates with the viewer long after viewing”.

Gerd Untermann Canada

“Born into a family of artists, architects, musicians and writers, I eventually began making sculptures of people I met. A wise relative told me early on that I should get my ego out of the way. As a result I found myself, as Goethe put it, aware of the melodies within the people around me. It is that inner beauty which I seek to feature in my work. Gerd Untermann was born in Berlin, Germany in 1930. He trained to become a cabinet maker before emigrating in 1953 to Canada. Here he became a carpenter building houses in Kenora and later in Toronto, where he exhibited and sold his first sculptures. He and his wife now live among grain fields north of Toronto where they have created an oasis of peace for his art work.

ALMAKAN Pyrénées Orientales, France

Born in 1971 in the South of France, Almakan is an active woman and an avant-gardist, combining the development of innovative companies with the philosophy of plastic arts. Self-taught, art is for her another means to go even higher and farther in experimenting with the future, convinced that our civilization is in a historic point of tipping. Simultaneously futuristic and philosophical, subtle and direct, Almakan’s works fundamentally explore the future of the human condition. Text and paint are inseparable and equally important in conveying the message of each painting. Almakan believes that the viewer’s emotions, stimulated and awaken by paintings, are feelings already residing in their soul. Her fantastic art is the fruit of a strange alchemy, stemming from the artist’s complex personality and the world which surrounds her. It is a shape of sensory, timeless art and of the space, that shows itself independently of all artistic movements. Top: Matière Noire / Black Matter from Tipping Point Series Mixed media on canvas 31 x 31 in. or 80 x 80 cm Tipping Point is a set of 6 works embodying the states which can guide our choices. AMIRA

La Garde Freinet, France Born in Egypt in 1937, Amira lived in Paris between 1949 and 2004. She studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and at the Conservatoire Russe d’Art Dramatique de Paris. She was awarded in both art schools. From 1964 to 1983 she worked as an art broker for modern impressionist paintings, which gave her the time to contemplate many masterpieces and to be in touch with museums and contemporary exhibitions. In 2004, Amira retired and moved to the South of France, at La Garde Freinet, a beautiful village where many other artists live. Since then, Amira has devoted herself to painting and everyday discovers new kinds of light, flamboyant colours and sunsets that you only find in the South of France. Her inspiration comes from multiple sources which have carried her towards abstract and surrealistic painting without forgetting the figurative. Since January of 2013, Amira operates her gallery ‘Atelier d’Art et de Peinture,’ producing unique works of art.

“What a blessing it is to be an artist. I was born into a family of artists, whose creative roots span three generations. From childhood my parents contributed to my appreciation of the beauty in all things and deepest respect for art. I’m thankful for the fact that I am able to create in the country of my dreams. The freedoms in America have given me the opportunity to be creative and imaginative in a completely unrestrictive space. I passionately believe that painting gives life meaning and gives me immense creative energy and inspiration. In my paintings I am not trying to explain or defend any ideas, I am simply breathing life into the canvas.” - Anahit Ar Aruchyan

“I need to inspire with my art. I choose subjects & themes in which I am interested. I work with form, structure, shape, contrast, B/W & vibrant color to make a strong statement. I use representational art so the subject is “in your face.” I want people to see the world spiritually, to be fascinated with original thinking, to inspire viewers to examine themselves introspectively, to rebuild broken hearts and dreams.” - Grace Arledge Grace Arledge has studied at the College of DuPag, Illinois, The American Academy of Art in Chicago, and taken classes at Oxford University, UK. “More than anything, I love to play with color, proportion, layering and juxtaposition. I love the idea of each viewer noticing different things and having different feelings about the same painting. I am always trying to create an environment within each piece, hopefully to create some emotion. When I am asked what style my work is, I am hesitant to define a particular type. I usually state that it is abstract/modern/folk art but I feel like my work is constantly evolving. - Leslie Barron

Mary Bechtol Canyon,Texas, USA

Mary Bechtol paints as a way of expressing her personal views of the world around her. She paints primarily in oils “because of the beautiful sheen and vibrant luster they produce.” She is inspired by “Light. Light. Light.” and the way it plays on an object. Mary frequently paints in series, “Once something stirs my imagination I find it hard to say everything about the subject on one canvas.” Mary and her husband David live on a farm in Canyon, Texas. She grew up on the Southern Plains. “My father worked for an oil company and we moved frequently. Most would agree that there isn’t much to look at on the Plains, but with each family move I began to notice subtle differences in the landscape. I saw varying shades, hues and tones and how the colors changed with the differing light.” Most of Mary’s landscapes begin en plein air. Although an accomplished plein air painter, she uses these pieces as her reference with which to create the finished studio paintings. Giving the viewer barely enough information to recognize a location, her greatest focus is “on the push and pull of color which gives each piece its depth.” An art instructor once told Mary that different hues of the same value excite the eye. “This defined the colors of my childhood. I strive to capture these nuances on each canvas by limiting my palette to only 4 or 5 colors and focus on making each canvas predominately cool or warm. I paint less to depict the landscape than to capture the colors.” Mary is an avid bird-watcher so you will always find at least one bird in her landscape paintings.

Lubbock, Texas, native Nell Bednarz explores the influences of nature, faith, and cultural heritage on our lives. Creating art that honors the Creator, her work has been exhibited on five continents. Art forms include drawing, painting, photography, assemblage sculpture, and jewelry. A private art instructor and fine art judge, Bednarz is represented by Holland Street Gallery in Bellville, Texas. Nell Bednarz began working with wire doing farm work with her father, Jack O’Briant, mending livestock fences, irrigation gated pipe, and cotton trailers, in the mid-1960s. She was an avid rock collector when young, and started photography while in middle school. Her materials are a natural extension of her life, as close to the land as the metals, stones, chalks, and pigments she uses. When asked what is most rewarding in developing fine art pieces, Bednarz remarks, “Good design enriches one’s life, helps to portray ideas and interests of the patron, and gives a medium of expression that communicates an active and seeking personality and mindset. Honoring God by serving my community through art and mentoring rewards me with good friends and great experiences. I hope to help others feel truly connected and increasingly aware that we are not alone.”

“My creative energy is often spiritual in nature. Each of my sculptures invariably represents some aspect of praise and appreciation for life’s beauty. Since my Native American Pueblo religion restricts the realistic unveiling of ceremonial life, the challenge is to use abstract art to represent the sacred; images that specifically capture a reflection of my spirituality and expressions of my intercession with the Creator.” - Joe Cajero Jr.

“I am presently in my second year of Bachelor of Fine Arts, majoring in painting, at the National Art School in Sydney, Australia. I have an extensive Art History and Theory program, with an elective in Indigenous Art, as well as life and general drawing. My expressionistic paintings seek to capture the joy and passion that can be found in the world. Working with a variety of mixed media, I layer my canvases with diverse palettes of rich colors, thickly applied with fearless brushstroke. My compositions are both fantastical and adventurous, combining recognizable elements with patterns and abstract renderings. What results is artwork bursting with energy and infused with freedom and positivity which I believe is the natural state of all people. Inspired by the rich African culture in which I was raised, having been born in Cape Town, South Africa and presently living in Sydney, Australia, I have had diverse cultural experiences but feel connected to all life on the planet. My paintings therefore have a primitive surrealistic quality to them and often contain glimpses of faces, which I use as a sculptural toll to symbolize the face of the illusion of life. For me being a painter is a divine calling and I seek to bring excitement, love, laughter and imagination to my audience. Wendy Cohen

Kristy-Ann Duffy Bulimba, Queensland, Australia

Kristy-Ann Duffy is a self taught Australian artist. Her work as an engineer has taken her all around Australia, and currently she lives in Queensland. Gathering inspiration from home, but also from travel to wild and remote places, Kristy’s first solo exhibition at Percolator Gallery (July 2010) was dedicated to her husband. While living in Perth (2008), Kristy attended classes on abstraction at the Fremantle Art Centre to challenge herself and extend her ability to be expressive through her art. While Kristy has painted a wide variety of subjects, more recently she has focused on her passion for birds; a fascination she shared with her husband. More than just capturing a likeness of the birds, Kristy wants to share some of those special moments through her art; whether they be black swans ripping green weed from the bottom of a river, pelicans preening and leaving a trail of soft feathers in the water, or the bright colours of lorikeets in flight. Kristy enjoys creating art that is both true to the subject and her own interpretation of the mood to produce unique and vibrant paintings. “My images are a depiction of the world around us, both real and surreal. I create my pieces in the electronic dark room. Primarily photographic in origin, I blend and layer several images to make the composition. Every image used within the compositions are my own. I have always been heavily influenced by Surrealism and love creating pieces that are dreamlike and fantastic with a note of realism. I aim to take the audience somewhere out of their reality and to experience something new; to expand their imagination and to look outside their immediate idealism. - Kelly Feil Above: Reflections Color digital print 20 x 30 in. or 51 x 76 cm Left Top: Kaleidoscope of Dreams Color digital print 30 x 30 in. or 76 x 76 cm Middle: Entrance Color digital print 30 x 20 in. or 76 x 51 cm Bottom: Broken Hearted Color digital print 30 x 25 in. or 76 x 63 cm Opposite Page: Forever Preserved Color digital print 15 x 20 in. or 38 x 51 cm

“Through my work I try to convey my emotional reality without figures or figurative association, to portray the barriers between the visible and invisible worlds and the nature of the struggle between light and darkness. The realization of my innermost self succeeds by means of compositional aspects with primary colours. Ranging from red to yellow, I employ a rich set of shades and a limited use of black, which serves to define the colours. Using gestural brush work, I layer single, translucent colours over one another. Sometimes as many as 150 colours, layered on top of each other, build up the picture. I want to pass on the fascination and passion which I personally experience during painting to others, encouraging them to look at the abstractness of our conceptual world, grasp the reflectiveness of existence and feel gratitude for the gift of life. - Karin Galler 2.

“I began painting after a dramatic near death experience when I almost drowned. This event propelled me to pursue the life of an artist but it also profoundly influenced me to seek to re-present the sense of the mystical and sublime from that experience. It is this sense of a spiritual, deeper reality that has been my continuous influence over twenty years of painting. In my work I invite the viewer to contemplate that things may not be as simple and straightforward as we might think at first glance, and that there may be a deeper mystical reality that requires a certain attitude, a meditative perspective, to uncover and be revealed. - David Giles

Jody Graham Newtown, New South Wales, Australia

“The body of work I have been developing over the last few years investigates urbanism and themes including, abandonment, survival, resourcefulness and beauty. Initially I draw to develop an understanding of the subject matter I am interested in. These drawings then become the foundation material that other work is derived from. Recently I have begun to examine the potential use of installations working as a dialogue with my two dimensional works. Combining a variety of mediums gives me a larger capacity to explore the built environment as a symbol of our own mortality. The growing relationship I have with this theme drives my desire to record and document both relics and individuals from our past.” -Jody Graham, May 2013 Jody Graham’s work is in Australian public collections and collected privately within Australia, London, UK and America. Bruce N Griffiths Robina, Queensland, Australia

Bruce Griffiths was born in 1955 in Wollongong, NSW and lives in Queensland. Largely self-taught, since picking up a brush in 2002, Bruce pays tribute to the influence of world renowned Australian based artists Robert Wade, Robert Lovett, Greg Allen, David Taylor and Joseph Zbukvic - a very rich heritage to widen your horizons. “It simply opened my eyes to what was possible,” he explains. A late bloomer, Bruce Griffiths embraces large solo exhibitions (the last was 72 pieces), has joined in group showings and a selection of his works can be viewed on his website. He has travelled widely in Australia and New Zealand. Bruce Griffiths still works by the modem, never paint where you haven’t been and never paint what you cannot feel. A lifetime of fishing and the bush has instilled a love of the outdoors, which is the preferred subject of his paintings. Many years in the South East Queensland construction scene, Bruce has seen the growth that will forever change the land but he insists that a simple beauty is still there. “You just have to look harder”. Bruce is an award winning artist, always looking for the next frontier.

Isabelle Habegger Wollerau, Switzerland

Discovering the work of Isabelle Habegger means to take a fresh view on what you see, far away from conformity. It is not that Isabelle takes on a distant or distinguishing view: it is rather through her very personal and individual perspective and power of expression that her works speak to the spectator. Living in a world with multiple stimuli from all kinds of sources, Isabelle visits her inner spiritual inspirations and thoughts rather than the external world for her work. She combines and composes different shapes, moods and colours to become a symbiosis. Born in 1958 in Neuch창tel, Switzerland, Isabelle Habegger has been involved with painting, sculpting, drawing and music since 14 years old and later her passion became a profession. Isabelle studied at the University for Design in Z체rich. Since 1987 she has been exhibiting on a regular basis in Switzerland and abroad. Her work encompasses the construction and translation of a reality of different creative concepts. A painter, sculptor and performance artist she creates art for private patrons and public institutions in Switzerland and internationally.

F. Lisa Hannick Lords Valley, Pennsylvania, USA

The fine art paintings of F. Lisa Hannick evoke a mood of a bygone era. Her use of a subdued palette, warm tones and powerful chiaroscuro leave one with a sense of refinement and grace. Her technical brilliance is evident in the solidity and quietude of each painting. The intense peace and restfulness of this simple transcript from domestic life, repeat the impression of the Dutch masters, without making one feel that there is any direct influence from another source. Her fidelity to an ideal truth is a refreshing change to the overflow of the avant garde. Lisa studied at the Art Students’ League of NY and is in numerous collections worldwide. She has taught at CSU Fresno and CSU Sacramento, and worked as gallery director at both locations. She has had solo exhibitions both nationally from NY and D.C. to California, including the prestigious Chicago Arts Institute, and group shows internationally in Armenia, Austria, and France. Hartman’s interactive installations and her contemporary landscapes can be found in private and corporate collections nationwide. “As I child, I spent considerable time “memorizing” pockets of beauty found in my rural Montana home along Charley Creek. A “near-death” experience presented me with a personal acknowledgement of the body and soul relationship. I feel our souls have chosen to be on this earth to experience the senses of touch, sight, sound, taste, and smell, as well as joy, fear, compassion, anger, love, etc. I choose to create artwork that expresses one’s immersion into the senses. The resulting images are the “essence” of the skies, land, water, and air, not merely a painted picture. I hope to present to the viewer a moment, to identify with each of my images, to touch upon their own personal “memory” experiences.” - Carol Hartman

I have always been fascinated by creation myths and I perceive the universe as having evolved from one catastrophic event. From one point, everything emerges, with the best scenarios trying to rush to completion.(..) My theory of art and life is dialectical. From the one point of creation, all contradictions arise. I see my art as the struggle between thesis and antithesis. I have moved from an imagist sort of art to abstraction to try to play this out.

In the last 45 years, he has managed to assemble this catalog of 450+ outrageously beautiful and varied works of art. And he is still adding to it. He is now retired and lives in Phelan, California. However, he spent 36 years in the mountains of Trinity County, California in a place called Hayfork. There he worked, fished, prospected for gold and developed his artistic style. Ron is also an accomplished musician.

Using my imagination and conveying the underlying emotions are the most important considerations when painting or drawing. I find painting compulsive, delicious, calming and exciting! It is also an ongoing source of intellectual and sensual pleasure. - Joy Helen Lea

“Each of my paintings is sourced from my own photographs. Although the paintings have a photographic quality, they are not photorealistic. I maintain a great deal of painterly qualities and techniques. I use both acrylic and oil depending on my mood. Most of my paintings take as long as six months to a year to complete. I started painting when I was a kid and had little, if any formal training until 2010 when I was accepted in the Michelangelo Istituto Accademia D’Arte in Florence, Italy. 1. “Empathicism,” is a new fine art style I am defining. The aim of my style, is to translate the emotional connection from artist, to the work, to the viewer. Empathicism is best defined through metaphoric imagery that stimulates the psyche of the viewer to feel beyond seeing the work in an analytical point of view. The main objective of Empathicism, is to evoke emotion beyond an impression, and to clearly challenge the expression of one’s inner-self. - Lord Toph .1

- Di McIntyre

The ability to make art and to enjoy it, reflects the human capability of transformation and the possibility of expressing different forms of harmony and beauty. not only inspired by the outside world, but also from within. Art is the pause one can take from the violent and difficult world we live in, to reorganize the chaos and achieve the needed transformation into better persons.

Inspired by the bright colours of Australia, my driving force is vivid use of acrylic colour, texture, mixed media, inks and charcoal, using glazing, scrapers, rollers, spray and drip techniques. I love a blank canvas and the excitement of creating from scratch, often with no plan and just get into the zone and see where it leads me. Music playing softly, lots of coffee, forgetting to eat, and attending to the daily running of the household is forgotten. With three group international exhibitions this year, I am loving the exposure. I am a member of FAA. - Lyn Olsen

Patricia Peters Florida, USA

An artist who has mastered the disciplines of sculpture and painting through experimentation and innovation, Patricia Peters worked as a fine art instructor in New Jersey for many years. She enjoyed encouraging her students to explore, grow and develop their art. She moved to South Florida in 2001 where she immediately became an important member of the arts community in the Palm Beaches. Patricia is the recipient of many awards and prizes and her work is in several important collections. Currently she devotes her time exclusively to three dimensional design, using clay and bronze. Throughout her work she captures the spirit of the inner woman, free and joyously celebrating in the moment, fluid in movement and unconventional to the eye. She believes that all women are beautiful and should be celebrated! Consequently, her sculptures honor the female form for all of its irregularities and perfections. Her women embrace who they are and affirm that with a triumphant ‘YES’. Her latest bronze collection entitled Joyous Women, expresses energy and movement vibrantly. Transformation and fluidity engage the viewer from all angles. Another important theme in Ms. Peters’ work is the quest for family and friendship. Denisa Prochazka Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

“My philosophy is to bring a positive, healing, spiritual force through my art. The use of symbolism and icons, drawn from historical and cultural backgrounds, help me question the spiritual void I feel in the art of our time. I am interested in creating series of sculpted visions as symbols that transcend individual nations, faiths and ethnicity, evoking alternate meaning and belief systems in our present time. In terms of the technical process, there are two stages in my art making. When I first begin creating, I translate a vision that comes to me into a three-dimensional art form. I use clay to capture sensual forms and textures that imitate the elemental earth, rock and nature derived elements as well as the human figure. I use symbols to create a dialogue between the artwork and its audience. - Denisa Prochazka

Essentia Divina Watercolor and ink on paper 9 x 12 in. or 22 x 30 cm

May be some white is there on the clouds, May be some black is there on the depths, The day descends, donated rays of light Ascend into the night to moon over a cradle, And I’m hearing a whisper and a tune, And I’m burning with an anxiety and hope, The night descends and wraps the sky as robe, The day ascends, night kisses at the border, And all that seems is nothing but the haul, And all the dreams appear to be real, The songs of clouds which remain unsolved, The groans of depths which nobody can hear, A black and white, sharp swallow is my soul, A black and white, long arrow is the road, The day ascends on dazzling rays of light Just like blessed emerald essentia divina*. *Literally “touchme-not”, something sacred and intangible.

And when he set on for his adventure, For the present and past foretime, That an emerald fish begged for him, And goldentailed rat begged for him, And primeval bird begged for him. And when a man with green wings Faced with heavenly signs, That an emerald fish breathed in his stead, And goldentailed rat ached in his stead, And primeval bird flared in his stead. And when over his green wings A cloud revealed behind a cloud, That an emerald fish sparkled in front of him, And goldentailed rat played in front of him, And primeval bird flew in front of him. And when he came back from the erstwhile, Present and past foretime, That an emerald fish queened in the deep, And goldentailed rat queened on the earth, And primeval bird queened in the sky.

Born in 1975 in Moscow, Yulia Sadovskaya graduated from the Saint Petersburg Academy of Art in 1998 and today works as a freelance artist. Yulia made the illustrations for the collection of poems The Sparrow’s Book by Russian poet, Alexander Ginzburg. “It is well known that poetry is the most difficult subject to be translated into any other foreign language. Anyway translators dare again and again. Illustrators do something similar. I made an attempt to comprehend the richest Ginsburg’s imagery, which is ultrasymbolic and mystic on the one side and full of visual images of real nature – on the other.” - Yulia Sadovskaya

“That is beautiful which is produced by the inner need, which springs from the soul.” - Wassily Kandinsky “I see my work as a continuous flow of images, shapes, marks, and patterns built from years of creating a visual vocabulary that resonates with me from within. It is tied to nature, which is also a continuous visual flow of images, shapes, marks, and patterns. All the forces and particles of nature are one, just different ripples in the ocean of consciousness. I find that the more tangential the imagery, the more it becomes metaphorical and open to the viewer’s own interpretation. My desire is that the viewer’s interpretation of my artwork relates on a level that connects the viewer to nature and to a spiritual sensibility that is innate.” – Bill Stamats

Those early watercolours gave me a voice and allowed me to enter the world of fine art, shaping what has become a lifetime of study and travel.” - Richard Stanley

Josefina Temín Naucalpan, México

A basic idea in the works of Temín take us to the ancient Greek and Roman viands as well as the PreHispanic Mexican ones: flowers and other organic elements are held by a solid and contrasting base that separates them from the floor or the ground or Earth, but always keeping a soft accessible substance just as they originated in the imagination of the author, or right in the stems of nards or yuccas. Even so, -as the fineness of the “animals” or “feathers”the elements of that blooming substance, sometimes tiny or frankly flat, determine the path of the movement.

Born and raised in Western New York, Mark Tomczak is now living in Hawaii. “At the age of 12 I began to experiment with different media, genres and techniques. In the early 80’s I relocated to Southern California. There I continued to paint while concentrating on a more realistic style in my landscape, floral and wildlife pieces. By the year 2000, I was in search of a destination to live that offered a more peaceful, and less hectic lifestyle. This I found, here in Kona, on the Island of Hawai’i . Here the slower pace of life, in a quaint country setting, allows for a more conducive environment for creativity. I have recently found enjoyment in a new more abstract style of work incorporating a tropical rhythm. I cannot express the feeling I get, when someone looks at my work and is captivated by something they see in it. This is, the ultimate reward! Sharing my talent knowing it can create an escape of excitement or tranquillity makes it all worthwhile! I welcome you to my world of art.” 1. Iryna Torskaya Odessa, Ukraine

.1 .2

Iryna Torskaya was born in 1977 in the Ukraine. Her parents passed away very early, so she had to become independent and develop a strong personality. As a child, she graduated from a musical school while simultaneously taking part in sports (eurhythmics and athletics). At the same time Iryna revealed her talent as a composer, succeeding in creating piano compositions. In 2011 the artist decided to present her visual work to the public. In September 2011 in Odessa her debut exhibition, Scientist’s House, took place, followed by her 2nd solo show at the Metropolitan Gallery Gamma in Spring of 2012. In 2013, Iryna had a solo show at Agora Gallery, New York.

“My paintings are unique not only because they have sense and riddles, but also because I create very seldom, it took years for some of them to be completed. I put all my soul in each art work. They open sacral knowledge that I have to the world. People only need to need to solve them. Also, I’d like to urge people to love the nature and animals, with the help of my art, as they are an integral part of our life. After all we aren’t owners this planet, but only guests, having passed our life course, leave there, from where we came. It is necessary to respect and protect our earth, and to thank it for that it sheltered and fed us.” - Iryna Torskaya

Rachel Tribble Palm City, Florida, USA

Rachel Tribble’s award-winning, dream-like paintings have been recognized for their serene and meditative quality. Commissioned by corporations and private collectors, her technique is a combination of influences from early in her career, and a lifelong interest in the environment and light. Light began specifically describing itself in her work over several years. First, in her career painting gemstones and jewelry and then her turn into creating multi-media installations for her own performance art, rock nightclubs and rave productions.

Originally from Manhattan, Rachel worked as jewelry designer in New York. In the early 1990’s she moved to Minneapolis, where she became known for her dark and sometimes controversial performance art and installations. Inspired by the depth of the Minnesota winters her work took on a surrealistic edge, with a social and environmental message. In the mid 1990’s Rachel took a hiatus from her life as a professional artist and lived and worked among the Native American people. In 2003, she returned to her traditional training as a painter, inspired by the journey she found herself on and the mystical worlds of the Aninshinabe and Lakota people. In 2008 her work for the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival poster won the IFEA Gold Pinnacle Award, for the Walt Disney Company. Rachel’s art has been featured in national magazines and gifted to nominees of the Academy Awards, the Emmy Awards, and the MTV Movie Awards. She continues to dedicate her work “to peacefulness in the world and the celebration of the Earth, Sky, and the multi-dimensional universes.” Rachel Tribble studied fine arts at Syracuse University and the National Academy in New York and today lives and works in South Florida near the Atlantic ocean.

Elizabeth Uyehara Elizabeth (Beth) Maltbie Uyehara was born in Ohio and was a fine-arts major at Oberlin College, Ohio, and a journalism major at California University, Northridge. She has also studied at Otis College of Art & Design Evening College, in Los Angeles, including drawing studies with Arnold Mesches, and painting studies with Bonita Helmer. For 12 years, until 2002, she was employed as an editor and feature writer at the Los Angeles Times newspaper. She also became a specialist in genealogy, publishing several books and was featured in a public television series, Ancestors. She married fellow artist, Paul Uyehara, in 1975 and she continued to paint and exhibit her art in the US and Europe. After a challenging and courageous fight with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), Beth left us with her beautiful talent and spirit in her artwork.

In her later years, Beth used multiple media including metallic paints, spray enamels, acrylics, and glazes of all kinds. While her underlying compositions are highly structured, the surface textures and light reflections of the canvases change with the light sources and time of day and are often surprising and personal to each viewer. Her ALS, as with many who have the disease, added to her thoughtful experience of life and some see a celestial, even a spiritual influence in these paintings.

Paul Uyehara Paul Takeshi (Tak) Uyehara, a Nisei (second generation Japanese American), was born in Seattle, Washington. He was interned with his family at the Manzanar and Minidoka internment camps during World War II, and later served in the U.S. Army in Germany (World War II) and in the Korean War. Known for his masterful drawings and his use of color, Paul was active in the Los Angeles art scene from the 1960s. . He began early studies at Chouinard Art School and Otis Art Institute. He was a member of the Los Angeles Art Association for more than 30 years and in his latter years, he was mentored by the well-known abstract painter Bonita Helmer. His works have been exhibited across the United States and in Europe. He married fellow artist, Elizabeth Maltbie Uyehara in 1975 and they both continued painting all their lives. Paul had always been fascinated by Goya compositions and returned to them to study energy and movement in drawings and then he translated these into modern idioms. In the series called Deconstructions, he set these pieces free of all reference to subject matter, while adding vivid, often primary colors to black and white compositions, to reimagine and reinterpret Goya’s concepts in purely abstract terms. Regardless of what he painted, even in his final months with Parkinsons Disease, Paul would get lost in the process of creating his artwork and was modestly surprised that viewers found such great enjoyment in them, including his early still life and landscapes pieces. “I was born a poor black child in the rural South -- no wait -- that was Steve Martin. I was born a bluecollar kid in Detroit. We, neighborhood kids, helped turn the west side of Detroit into what it is today. (Visible shudder) I was a terrible student in high school but somehow managed to earn a four-year scholarship to art school. I left art school early to take a job in advertising. It was the lure of money. When you don’t have much, more sounds better. I started out as an art director in Detroit, worked in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. All during that time I painted at night. My final job in advertising was as Executive Vice President, Creative Director of Chiat Day’s San Francisco office, and I was still painting at night. I left advertising to paint, sculpt and write full time.” - Ross Van Dusen

“ The day I discovered my passion for art, I witnessed a miracle, which filled the canvas of my soul with beautiful colors. My work reflects all of my emotions at a given moment. I prefer doing large scale works with oils as it allows me to create a delicate mix of colors with unique and personal touches. Love and serenity are among my main themes. Painting transports me to an entirely different universe filled with a whirlwind of colors and emotions. - Lovelia Vera

Chermine Vidori Turkey

“I discovered my painting ability in 1993. My kids’ toys were my inspiration and models. After a year of constant work, my first 23 paintings were exhibited in Rieti, Italy where we lived. From then after, I have painted about 300 works, as well as a calendar for an important Italian company. I have participated in many Naif Exhibits in Italy, Spain and Turkey and opened personal exhibitions in favor of Unicef and Losev and some of my works have been printed for beneficence on cards and calendars. Along all these years painting has become a profession and a wonderful way of expressing my creativity. I was born in Turkey, lived in Italy and now travel between the two countries.” - Chermine Vidori

In his own words: “ The water, ocean, nature, Southwest culture and native Americans have all been my teachers. All of my paintings are spiritual in nature and I like to immerse myself in the subject and then return to the studio to paint the inner experience. For me each painting is a blessing that I receive from the Divine, in a language made out of infinite living shapes, patterns, symbols, and colors, which goes beyond our words as a form of communication.

Willow Wu New Taipei City,Taiwan

Willow Wu is one of the first artists in the world to use jellyfish as the main theme for his creative inspirations. In Mr. Wu’s paintings, a fantasy-like world, filled with mystery, can be seen through out the unique characteristics of jellyfish: transparent, beautiful and supple, yet overlapping and distorted. He assigns feminine traits to jellyfish to reflect and allude to a woman’s different emotions, such as their ability to be beautiful, gentle, and passionate, while simultaneously fickle and unpredictable. In recent years, Mr. Wu has been painting jellyfish as a symbol that mocks political absurdity, tells an ironic story of human civilizations, and laments the fragility and impermanence of human life and even our Earth. Mr. Wu also has begun a new series on the universe, which contemplates the issue of time and space, and how human civilization ought to be humble when our rapid appearance is compared to the limitless history of the vast universe.
