Katherine Gallagher

United States

Artist, Katherine Gallagher was born in Chicago in 1959 and grew up watching the classic movies of Hollywood’s Golden Era on television with her mom. She was influenced by the Chicago art scene in the ‘70s and ‘80s and after graduating college, she studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After moving to San Diego in 1987 she participated in many exhibitions in different states and has appeared in several art books and magazines. Gallagher continues to transform her fascination with films of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s by commenting upon their nostalgia and influence in American culture, through puns and paradoxes of this relationship. The layering of bold, bright colors serves to highlight the artifice of the black-and-white iconic film stills she depicts.

Introduction

It seems hard to believe, but here we are writing the introduction to the 13th Volume of International Contemporary Masters! And if we add our other art anthologies, this is the 25th volume to be published by World Wide Art Books, over a span of 13 years. In these books, we have presented the work of over 2,500 artists, from practically every country in the world, about half of these in the International Contemporary Masters series. We have printed a total of over 150,000 books, and the total readership of all the digital books numbers in the tens of millions. This is not a small achievement. When we first started this endeavor, back in 2006, our mission was to create a year to year chronicle of noteworthy contemporary art being created all over the world. We considered that there are no more centers, no more dominant schools or doctrines or directions in art. No orthodoxies, no judges, no arbiters. Just a vast diversity. Democratic, or rather, anarchic. Our approach was simple: to present the work of noteworthy artists from all over the world. The word “noteworthy”, of course, contains a certain subjectivism. For us, it contains two main criteria: something original, an element of inspiration, vision, originality. And secondly, a mastery in the artist’s given medium. But beyond this, to present each artist’s work without comment, to let it speak for itself. Thirteen years later, we think this approach is vindicated. The books have become a recognized standard, a resource for art professionals, collectors, art lovers and teachers. We intend to continue on this path as long as we can, and we hope that when we can no longer do so, others will carry the torch forward.

Nicholas H. Teetelli is both a published and international award-winning fine art photographer. He was born in New York City and grew up in lower Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. During the late 1960s, and into the 1970s, the Village was a hotbed of culture and the arts. During this period, Teetelli was introduced to art and photography, developing an interest in what would become his lifelong passion. While he took some photography courses in college, Nicholas Teetelli is primarily self-taught. Spanning the last four decades, he has learned, developed, and honed his skills independently, becoming an avid and serious amateur photographer who has recently turned professional. Although he lived and grew up in New York City, he has spent many summers in the Greek islands and has traveled to many other places in the world. He continues to travel extensively in pursuit of noteworthy photographic images. During each journey, with camera in hand, he records much of what he sees, sharing the impression of his mind’s eye through composition, light play, and shape and design. His photographic portfolio is diverse: it includes landscape, architecture, portrait, flora and fauna, underwater, and street photography. He has recently brought his portfolio to the public eye and, in short order, has had dozens of his photographs juried and invited into exhibition at many galleries and museums throughout the United States, receiving many awards for his work along the way. He has won awards in international competitions in Moscow, London and Tokyo, a featured artist at major art shows at Art San Diego, Spectrum Miami, Artexpo New York, has private gallery placements in Vienna, Austria and Bologna, Italy, as well as being a featured gallery fine art photographer on some of Royal Caribbean’s, and now Holland America’s, cruise ships.

United States “There is much beauty to behold in this world, moments that the eye captures, the wonders it sees... moments that should be committed to perpetual memory, but sadly only to become fragments of a faded recollection, or more often, simply forgotten. I draw inspiration to record these timeless and special moments, to capture them in my mind’s eye, and through my lens, transforming each image and committing them to permanent form.”

Jean-Jacques Porret

United States

Jean Jacques Porret’s surreal sculptures transcend the mere human form they represent and instead draw the viewer in with their delicate expressionism, rhythmic movement, and abstract sensuality. The work is never about the figure, but the emotions expressed in the tension of his fluid curves and precarious balance. Though abstract in nature, the recognizable form and innate humanity residing within each piece is impossible to ignore. Thus, we are given a case study in restraint, with the artist utilizing the best aspect of each genre without clouding his final result, creating a self-styled harmony Porret simply describes as “rhythm in space”.

Franco Baldazzi Italy

Of Tuscan origin, Franco Baldazzi was born in Florence in 1969. The atmosphere that always embraces Firenze influenced him to become somewhat rebellious. After school, he decided to express his artistic passion, but the clash with reality soon calmed down his enthusiasm. He decided to frequent the studio of the Spanish painter Mari Carmen Mur in order to understand and see other realities and, perhaps, to understand the “secrets” of this art that fascinated him. Franco embarked on a “normal” working life without neglecting his artistic and creative streak and participated in several local exhibitions. He alternated periods of intense activity with long periods of reflection.

DNA Pazzia/Follia Acrylic on wood panel 90 x 90 cm

With the birth of his three children and his new role as a father, Franco found again the energy and the will to express himself by taking over those ideas and projects that he had set aside. He struggled to go back to the artistic activity and went through a phase he defines as his “black” period, making freehand works in a dark style. Despite the desire to get out of this almost comatose status in order to navigate into the world of color only in 2015, after a bad illness, he succeeded in finding the right energy to speak with colors. A creative and multifaceted artist, as he calls himself, his art is not attributable to schools or movements, it is expressed with strong and contrasting colors, inspired in every way and from every place, in that moment of time equal to a butterfly’s beating of wings.

In 2000 she acquired a Fellowship Degree specializing in Pathology from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her artistic journey began with this specialization, as she was fascinated by the complexity and beauty of the cells of the human body. The microscope became her first tool, allowing Ahlam to see into the inner universe of science and the human body. She focused on her medical career, becoming a Consultant Pathologist and an Assistant Professor. It wasn’t until after more than 25 years of studying and practicing medicine that she decided to independently educate herself in art and pursue a focused approach. Renata Bosnjak

Lady of Nazareth Oil on canvas 24 x 36 in.

Renata Bosnjak was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1976. She had an interest in art from a very young age, finishing her first piece at 6 years old. At age 16 when the war started, her dream changed dramatically. For the next few years, she would be fearing for the lives of her loved ones and her own. In 1997, when the war had ended, she made the decision to move to America as a refugee. Far from her family, she had to face a new language, a new way of life, and finding a job. Brushes and paint turned into casino cards and chips, but she never gave up on her dream of becoming an artist. Today and self-taught, Renata has managed to develop her personal style using religious imagery, realism, and various works from the old masters.

Claude Monet proclaimed “ and torment. Echoing this sentiment, David W. Douthat creates eloquent compositions that resonate strongly in the mind of the spectator through a mastery of interactive expressive color and controlled composition. Integrating hues, vigorous line, and dynamic motion, his works reveal a deep personal vision that showcases his infusion of symbolism and abstraction. Luminously focusing on the gestural complexity of the geometric compositions, he richly infuses his powerful paintings with vitality, capturing the intensity of each moment in emotionally expressive compositions.

The Big Carriage Ride Acrylic on canvas 60 x 45 in.

Edmund Ian Grant was born in 1950 and now lives and paints in the Napa Valley. It was at ten years of age, he declared that he wanted to be a visual artist. However, it all began at age seven, the Henri Mancini theme song for Peter Gunn, an American TV show, captured Grant’s attention. It was the songs’ iconic alto saxophone solo that convinced him to play that woodwind; he continued this pursuit through his collegiate years eventually becoming an artist, a working musician while never letting go of his dream of becoming a painter. After a long hiatus for a professional career of Dentistry, in the mid-1980s, Grant pursued the visual arts and taught himself to paint. For Edmund, painting, like extemporaneous music was self-discovery allowing his intuition to dominate. His distinctive somewhat cubist abstract expressionistic style employs vivid imagination, compelling storytelling, and innovative use of color. The Tray Acrylic on board 40 x 30 in.

Strength In Numbers Collage on paper 11 x 14 in.

Kat Kleinman is a floral collage artist from the Sacramento, California area. She began her career as an artist in 2016, after she retired as a psychotherapist, working with homeless people for 20 years. Her past work is referenced because it does inform her current work with a focus on positivity and making people feel better, if only for a moment. Kat specializes in floral collages because the individual flowers combine to create a new and cohesive form, reflective of the healing process. She takes her own photographs, with the only exception being the occasional gift of a flower photo from a personal friend. It is important to Kat that she uses her own photography because it separates the integrity of her work from those who use more impersonal internet downloads as a source. Each flower is hand cut, a process she calls meditative, and a single collage may require dozens of individual blossoms. Kat is enthusiastic about the potential for color to positively influence emotions, ultimately leading to better relationships between people. She describes herself as saddened by the self-centered rhetoric expressed by current influential leaders, and she is dedicated to creating art inspired by compassion, meditation and right action. Her work has been featured in books, major art exhibitions in the USA, and was most recently seen at the Shibuya Station Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan.

Tiki Mulvihill

By-Walk Salt Spring Repurposed material embedded in drift wood (sculpture on flour) 67 x 26 x 48 in.

Vancouver Island, 1866-71 Repurposed material embedded in drift wood (sculpture on wall) 35 x 34 x 7.5 in.cm

Multidisciplinary artist Tiki Mulvihill incorporates sculpture, performance, and audio in site-generated installations and sculptural works. Although currently situated in Vancouver, Mulvihill sees herself as a reluctant nomad, moving throughout adult-life between rural and urban communities. This transience generates an ongoing dialogue within her studio practice where she teases the supposed truths we construct in our conflicted relationships with place. Mulvihill’s recent work, constructed of natural and repurposed materials, is realized through pseudo-scientific research and development. It expands through viewer interaction and engagement to bridge the gaps between imaginary and actual: between fact and fiction. Her specific artwork purpose, derived from exploration and evolvement through process, intends to expand unique impulses for individual viewer interpretations. From a conceptual structure, spectators definitely engage in disparate environments, which stimulate humanity response to ‘place’ and people. Themes of heritage, cross-cultural perspectives and Canadian identity are her purpose of significance particularly in the current political climate. Viewers generously open their own knowledge of history and current life when observing artwork, which engages her activity as an artist.

Significant Place Repurposed material embedded in drift wood (sculpture on a plinth) 36,5 x 15 x 15 in.

After completion of the past exhibitions, Tiki Mulvihill plans to create entirely new installations and sculptural pieces while continuing with strategies in the future.

Musto M. Yildirim

Isolation Acrylic 130 x 140 cm

Way Acrylic 100 x 170 cm (Lit with blacklight)

Musto M. Yildirim explores in a constant renewal of technical and aesthetical research by creating a dynamic dialog between matter, light and space to enhance the visual and textural aspect of his works, looking for unusual effects and sensations. In this vein, he’s experimenting with the use of acrylic with luminescence effect under black light exposure, creating herewith a third dimension that invites to an immersive and reflexive journey.

Carnival Acrylic 250 x 200 cm

These researches and projects are formally called Black Box exploration by the artist. The light becomes not only a technical medium but also metaphorical one: Light as a symbol of knowledge and discovery in contrast to obscurantism and ignorance; the Black Box as a system whose inner workings are unknown. A way for Musto to remind the need to question the world.

The Lost Acrylic 200 x 170 cm (Lit with blacklight)

Politicians Acrylic 150 x 180 cm

Reflexions concerning topics like loss, identity, and memory regularly foster his works. His solitude, his memory, and feelings toward unfairness and human folly seem to give him an inspiration fed with a kind of creative rage. His works also reveal a great freedom and an astonishing ability to mix, combine, confront and contrast. Between the visible and the invisible, White Cube and Black Box, abstract and figurative; between the Orient and the Occident, between to forget and to remember, scepticism and humanism, permanence and impermanence, he’s questioning those boarders and multiplying the points of view.
