SELECT MODERN ART

D.O.M. United Kingdom

Born in Poland in 1982, D.O.M. (Dominika Zurawska) studied Art at Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan, Poland. She has had solo exhibitions and participated in group shows in Poland, the United Kingdom and Italy, including at Mall Galleries, London where she won The Caron Keating Memorial Award. D.O.M.’s works belong to private collections in Poland, the UK, Germany, Norway, Australia, the USA and Greece. “My art is expressive, dynamic and unapologetically loud. I transfer my thoughts and feelings straight onto the canvas and use strong contrasting colours to show energy, emotion and exuberance. My painting says “Stop! Look at me!” It attracts, seduces and beguiles the viewer. I specialise in oil painting – I chose this medium to achieve deep and rich colours. The technique is extremely versatile – it can be used thickly in impasto or extremely thin in glazes; it can be opaque or transparent. I am fully committed to my art and there are still plenty of rebellious paintings to come.” - D.O.M.

INTRODUCTION

latest in contemporary art from all over the world. We are dedicated to the proposition that great artistic talent exists everywhere, often in highly unlikely places, created by artists of wildly different backgrounds. Our mission is to display noteworthy art that might otherwise remain invisible, to a world wide audience of art lovers. Most of the works in this book were created during the last year or two, so this series of

Perhaps it can be said that the only rule left remaining in the world of art is that there are no rules. Truly, there are no schools left, nor centers of arbitration, no guiding trends, just an invigorating anarchy. For this reason, we have only two very simple criteria in our selection secondly, the artist must show mastery of the medium she or he is working in. Beyond that, anything goes. We deliberately refrain from any kind of commentary, beyond that of the artist who created the work. We believe that it is best for there to be a direct communion between the work itself and the viewer, without any kind of intervention or mediation by third parties. We hope that this volume, as the others we have published, will be a valuable resource, and will provide as much pleasure to its readers as it did to us, who put it together. Thomas Tunberg Editor

“There is much beauty to behold in this world, moments that the eye captures, the wonders it sees... moments that should be committed to perpetual memory, but sadly only to become fragments of a faded recollection, or more often, simply forgotten. I draw inspiration to record these timeless and special moments, to capture them in my mind’s eye, and through my lens, transforming each image so that I can share them with others in hope they enjoyment. When representing objects I aim to depict them from more than one angle and depict what I ‘feel’ is present, without dismantling the object, but adjusting the geometric planes, to form a contrasting colours next to each other. These colours are sometimes so vivid that they seem to have an existence independent of the picture. The subjects I depict are chosen because they express a particular emotion.” - F. A. “After a short experience in reproducing the old masters’ works I decided to apply the exercise of “careful observation” in one of the painting areas I am mostly interested in: Hyperrealism; always trying, from a technical point of view, to reproduce reality in every detail. Recently I’ve also decided to experiment with a new area, which is “the opposite” of the previous one, consisting in creating completely abstract works, performed “straight off” just playing with colors... I think that art is pure emotion and it should give emotion both, to those who practice it and to those who observe it… It is something that wants to make you dream, to take you away into another dimension every time you need... This is what I am working on.” - S.A.

Time Traveler II Acrylic and photo transfer on recycled corrugated packaging, on panel 96 x 144 in. or 244 x 366 cm

I am inspired by images and archetypes, that have more power and energy than we know. An image is a non-verbal representation of something, and has a continuously emerging content. That’s exciting! The images I have been working with, in recent years, are related to the Earth, the Heart, Horses, Rainbows and Waterfalls. I work on highly textured materials, like recycled corrugated packaging, birch bark and cedar bark. These textures enliven my painting. I also include found objects and photo transfer into my work. A little bit of photo real content, can anchor a vast amount of abstract painting. The trick however, is to incorporate it successfully. - A. B.

“My works have travelled the world as much as myself. I am a Norwegian photographer with a knack for use of existing light, contrast and shadow to show the character and beauty of the object in front of the camera. I was educated in Sweden between 1979-83. My photographs are almost always composed through the lens. Earlier my works ventured mostly in cars, architecture and design and have been featured on several covers of international magazines. Cars represent a huge interest for me, but after many years, I am glad to say that my work contains a lot more. In recent years my focus has moved towards landscape and art photography. As the self-professed Father of Prismatics, Jurisich utilizes his painting ability to recreate the splendor of refracting light. The most intriguing aspect of Jurisich’s paintings is the direction, origin and aspect of light. “Whether the light source is above or behind the central subject, it is always apparent that the light and its reaction to mediums (and therefore the resulting color), is the real protagonist of the painting.” - J. My realistic illustrations created from thorough research and a fascination of all living creatures, their personalities and minds, tell you a story. - L. L.

it, have been a lifelong source of intrigue for me. Growth is a continual struggle and yet we are inspired to keep up with it and strive to get ahead of the game. This concept of evolution is strongly represented in my work. When I started painting, was dark in subject, colour and texture. As I have matured, my art has expressed itself through several series, ranging in subject matter drawn from urban life and social groups to the powerful forces of nature. Vivid colour and bold textures have conquering my own demons has replaced earlier more restrictive emotional expressions. LOREN TEETELLI Venice, CA, United States

Loren Teetelli began her career in New York City, working as a textile conservation intern at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and American Museum of Natural History. Her curiosity to understand material culture of the past, her propensity for creation and her passion for prehistory led her down the natural path to study ancient metalsmithing. While in New York City, Loren studied with various master goldsmiths specializing in ancient metalsmithing techniques. The construction and precision involved in metalworking aligned with her conservation skills, allowing her to excel. After two years of study, Loren realized her passion for jewelry creation, emanating in the birth of her signature brand. LOREN NICOLE based in Venice, California. Loren’s work highlights entirely handmade

precious metals. The craftsmanship highlights techniques of the ancient Mediterranean, reviving handmade chains and the art of granulation, a technique dating back 4500 years. All of the materials are sourced from dealers who take social responsibility seriously, supporting healthy labor practices and minorities where possible.

NICHOLAS H. TEETELLI Holmdel, NJ, United States

“Born on May 23, 1958 in New York City, I grew up in Greenwich Village lower Manhattan, and spent my summers in the Greek 1960’s and began, what would become, a lifelong interest and passion. Being fortunate to travel to many places throughout this world, with each journey experiencing and recording much of what I see, I now share by expressing my mind’s eye through composition, light play, shape and design in my photographs. I enjoy shooting most subject types, including landscapes, now expanding my interests in exploring people and street photography. I primarily, and almost exclusively, use Leica cameras and lenses, which, for me, have yielded superior results. Beginning in January 2016, and at the insistence of my friends and family, I decided to begin sharing my photography, now having more than 50 of my works being exhibited at dozens of galleries and museums with several pieces receiving awards including Best in Show, 1st and 2nd Place, Honorable Mention, Special Merit etc.” - N. T.

Her background also includes freelance graphic design for major companies such as Valpak. What ties her to her current collection is the permanent and uncontrollable quality of ink on wood. “The concept relates to life – that a person can only control so much of it. They may set the path and bare their own origins (i.e. the grains of the wood), but cannot change what life will ultimately give them. Each layer imprints the piece. Each occurrence impacts a life.” - I. T.
