INTRODUCTION

This is the fifth volume in the series Current Masters. We originally conceived this title as an addition to our long-running series “International Contemporary Masters”, which would present younger master artists and new, fresh work by established contemporary artists. The book comes out at a difficult time, as the whole world is being swept by the coronavirus epidemic. But in spite of all the fear, suffering and death, art continues to bloom, often under the most unlikely circumstances. In the volume, among many other works, we feature the three winners of the contest organized by our online gallery Artavita, with the theme “In the time of the Coronavirus”, which had a huge participation. The book features very notable works by 75 other extremely talented artists from all over the world, in almost every medium of the plastic fine arts. At a time, when visiting art shows has become problematic, the role of a book like this in showcasing worthy new art has become ever more important. We hope that the reader, or rather the viewer, will derive as much pleasure from perusing this collection as we did in compiling it. Thomas Tunberg Editor

DIEGO JACOBSON Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1964, Diego Jacobson moved with his parents to New York when he was two years old. Although, as a boy, he showed an interest and receptiveness to drawing, he did not realize his artistic abilities until he became an adult. After spending his formative years in New York, he moved to Puerto Rico. In 1985, he finished his work on a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Clark University in Massachusetts. In 1999, Jacobson obtained a Masters Degree in Practical Spirituality from the Seminary of Theological Peace in California; increasing the basis of his philosophical formation with field work in many countries like England, Ireland, New Zealand, The Kingdom of Tonga, Thailand, China, Japan, Bora Bora (Polynesia), Australia, Mexico, Cusco, Peru, and most of the Meso-American cultural and ceremonial artistic settlements. His most recent trips for spiritual and mystical reflections have been to Machu Pichu, Peru and Belize. Jacobson has presented 39 solo exhibitions in important museums and galleries in New York, Miami, Argentina, Peru, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Barcelona, Vienna, Brussel, Copenhagen, and Lecco. Additionally, he has participated in numerous collective exhibitions internationally, where he revealed the personal and intimate character of his symbolic and informal abstraction. He is an artist of great sensibility who captures the spectator with his paintings by the strong mystical projection of the interior movement of his art. In the past ten years, his works have been fully propagated in prestigious and internationalprojection circles, such as Art News Magazine, Arte al Dia International Magazine, and ARTes en Santo Domingo. On the road to international projection of his art, Jacobson works out a long schedule of exhibitions, among them galleries and museums in the USA, France, Spain, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean Area. Jacobson has been defined by critics as “the American artist originally from Latin America with the most profound articulation of the intimate abstraction as language and personal aesthetic; who transcribes his interior self as the soul calligraphy and consciousness on the canvas.” Jacobson was distinguished by the UNESCO’s (The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) Puerto Rican Association, on the occasion of the association’s 30th anniversary. The artist lives and works in Palmas del Mar, in southeastern Puerto Rico, and also has a secondary studio in his native Argentina.

LELA MIGIROV Lela Migirov was born in 1965 and lives between Paris, France and Israel. She learned painting mainly in the Werzberger College of Arts and Crafts and Paris College of Art. Lela is a member of L’Académie Européenne des Arts (France). She has had 22 solo exhibitions in Paris, Prague and Israel, and 43 group participations in Italy, Spain, France, China, the USA, and Russia. Her artworks are presented permanently at Concept Store Gallery (Paris), in the European Art Museum, Museum of Art of St Petersburg 20-21 centuries, Franz Kafka Society (Prague) and in private collections worldwide. She was awarded with several prestigious international awards for her artistic merits. “In a chaotic and hectic society where everything is now too fast and extremely immediate, people lost the peace, balance, link to harmony and finding solitude often touches madness. Some of them have the nature of soaring dust and are unable to stand any chains. They soon begin to shake their fetters with insane force and to throw the walls, the chains and themselves around the world. And then art comes as a long conversation transcending eras, countries and languages, and creates beauty from the ashes and rain. My artwork is a result of imagination, contemplation and thoughts on an infinite, fascinating journey into the world of dreams, suggestions, emotions, conversations, magical strengths, mystery and expressive power.

CHRISTEL VAN HEMELRIJCK Christel Van Hemelrijck uses oil painting to present us with her lyric expressionism visions. She is a self-taught artist, based in Mechelen, Belgium. She is inspired by the people who surround her and by her travel experiences. The island of Crete remains a major source of inspiration. She has lived in Crete during the 90s and she still spends a lot of time there. Christel’s work, a vibrant collection of abstract oil paintings, stands out by the use of texture, colour and light. Her emotions are expressed through the language of bold colours, with solid composition and delicate texture mainly on large canvasses. Every painting is a story. Christel has had several exhibitions in Belgium and most recently she had the opportunity to present her work in Lisbon, Amsterdam, London, Venice and Madrid.

“Small things around me represent a source of inspiration, starting with life experiences. My artistic projects take a closer look at inherited customs and beliefs, the individuals versus the collective identity and the differing relationships between gender. What does belonging mean and what is the difference between it and containment?”

Born in 1962 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where she lives and works, Ahlam graduated from King Saud University in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery. She was determined to achieve a recognized degree in the field of medicine. In 2000 she acquired a fellowship degree in the field of pathology from the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her artistic journey began with her choice of specialization in the field of medicine, as she was fascinated by the complexity and beauty of the cells of the human body. The visual stimulation of the microscope triggered her interest to express and transport what she sees under the microscope to work on canvas. While through her experience as an artist she discovered the presence of science in art – the layers of details, the complexity of existence, the beauty that is life, and the humanity without which no art would have purpose; the humanity where the two finally meet.

On the surface, these are just simple images that represent day to day life, but in reality, they reflect an intimate view and interpretation of the conflicts, isolation, distress, and ambiguity of our urban society in modern days.”

Small Steps Giant Step

Wendy Cohen is a Sydney-based artist who has attained a BFA as well as MFA Degrees. Her art practice focuses on the relationship of color, shape, line, and form with realistic components that are communicated in a painterly language. By integrating shapes into a cohesive body of colors and forms in conjunction with collage elements, flowing ideas are arbitrarily manifested that bring attention to the brushstrokes, mark-making, and materiality on the surface of each painting. However, the primary focus of her practice is to transform the static space of each painting with synchronized contrasting colors highlighting its chemistry and resonance.

Sources of inspiration for her work are nature, the sea, the sky, light and music in which she finds great joy, happiness and mindfulness. In her paintings, she seeks to transfer these inner sensations onto the canvas. While the music is playing, she surrenders and lets the brush intuitively play over the canvas. The result is often unique and unexpected! Torhild aims for her painting to awake and to remind to the observer of all the beauty in life, as well as offer moments of joy and mindfulness! Torhild has had eight group exhibitions and this summer she also participated in a Nordic Art Group Exhibition with «ArtPortable» in Stockholm, Sweden. Her artworks are purchased by private collectors. Her artwork was published in Issue 21 of Spotlight, Contemporary Art Magazine by Circle Foundation (October 2020).

ALBERT ENZ Switzerland / France

Albert Enz was born in Switzerland in 1943 and lives in France. He studied chemistry and biochemistry. During his scientific work as a researcher in the pharmaceutical industry, he continued to follow his path as a (self-taught) painter. Numerous exhibitions in France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy since 1960 encouraged the artist to paint again after his retirement. Enz’s current works are inspired by landscapes. Many of the pictures are impressions of travels in the south of France and Tuscany. The means of figurative statements are for Albert, form, color and composition. Color, observation of color, and the senses of color are the basis for a creative human nature. Abstract compositions contain the memory of very specific feelings, which he then paints.

“Artists have always been concerned with color in their own way. We use systems to search for laws in the complexity of color to make anarchic and emotional visions of our thinking. According to Norbert Wiener, information is neither energy nor matter, nor is it a pure product of the mind. For the artist, getting that mind and matter form a natural entity is fascinating. Art stands between nature and spirit and is unthinkable without materialization. Therefore, one can understand art as information which is conveyed by colors. In art, the colors are emancipated and stand for their own sake as well as ours. We understand color as substantially as our reflection. Color is no longer just a natural or invisible property or attribute.

“Obtaining a BA in Graphic Design and Fine Art, I worked for many years as a Graphic Designer and Art Director. I made a switch from realism to abstract art about 15 years ago, allowing me to be more expressive and expansive with my paintings. I work primarily in mixed media paint, painting in two different styles simultaneously. I use four to five canvases at a time, allowing for a very creative work atmosphere. This permits me to get more emotionally tied to the paint, creating a sense of harmony that leaves me feeling exceptionally invigorated as I work. Abstract art has become my life’s obsession. I paint the emotions that flood my mind each day. Every moment brings new images for me to paint, creating a sense of euphoric peace.”

“I invest in the creation of a piece of art to convey what I have inside: my thinking, my emotions, my life, my essence and my soul. It’s also a way I can reach my own desires and essential demands out of life. For me, it is important to create what I feel. My abstract art is an extension of myself. Full of passion and emotion: happy, sad, angry, calm, all playing a part in my creative process. The sights running through my mind create the desire to paint in a more expressive form.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, one is forced to think of life, death and survival. In some way, during hard times, one could be more appreciative and reflective. To turn miseries to positivity it would be a hard charge to yield strength and aspirations. It may sound strange, but we visual artists need to find who we are and how to go about our productions. Sometimes, we can find our souls in unfavorable circumstances and move onward with new strength. The pandemic helps me to see the transient nature of our experiences and events. JAN KÖHNHOLDTT - BEYOND THE MIRROR by Dagmar Lott-Reschke

Entspannt II, 2012 Acrylic/oil on canvas 180 x 150 cm

“It all began with the observation of “fleeting realities” “reflected in the Isebek Canal in Hamburg. The refraction and dissolution of the mirror image by the wave movement of the water brought everything in flow. Nothing is rigid or solid; the state between being and appearance is uncertain. Köhnholdt’s painting is reflection - in both senses of the word. The external reality which stimulates the eye combined with the mental and emotional perception, i.e. internal reality, amalgamates in a new image. His inquiring gaze is fascinated by visually curious or touching snapshots. Photographs or newspaper clippings are often the basis of his large-format acrylic oil paintings, in which he transforms what he sees in color and shape. Color pencil studies try out the picture design, but a picture-specific cosmos develops on the canvas. Free lines and expressive coloring are added to the vague description of things. In Jan Köhnholdt’s colorful art world, everything seems light and relaxed, quite dramatic, but always moving. In the flow of painting, the artist opens the material boundaries of his motifs to our imagination. The image of reality returns to us as a liberated possibility.”

DOUGLAS LYELL United Kingdom

“Wakefield, Yorkshire, England is my birthplace, I grew up in London. I was educated in Sociology at Middlesex University, and in Art at the Sir John Cass College, and Reading University, England. I live in Porthleven, Cornwall; this is the tenth year of my presence here. I threw away everything that I had learned at university concerning restrictive theories and made a fresh start here in Cornwall. First, I painted the sea. This informs my current practice. I have had group shows in New York and Berlin.”

Black Buddha Oil on canvas 20 x 16 in.

“My Buddhist paintings are based on some images of the sacred art of Tibet. When I started painting them a magical process occurred and the pictures transformed into self-portraits. I put a great deal of thought into my paintings; when I am painting I go into a right-brained trance state; the thinking is done beforehand. I am a UK dissident, because of my defiance to the system and my support of human rights and freedom. Nine years ago I moved from Reading, England to Cornwall in the extreme southwest of Britain. Here I have at last found some peace and my art has flourished as a result. I am a supporter of localism and regional autonomy.”

“I believe it’s the little experiences we encounter daily that complete the big picture of life. You will see that I do this in my ‘Photozaics.’ When looking at my art, don’t see it as broken pieces but look at the complete picture and it will captivate you as Mother Nature does to me. I start with a photograph; this will include a planned or a spur of the moment trip. I go out with an open mind allowing Mother Nature to show me what she wants me to capture. I decide which image will be made in a photozaic. I create photozaics; I color match the stained glass to my image; hand-cut and tumble. While cutting, my process is time-consuming in a rhythmic way allowing me to zone out and only focus on my art.”

Whisper & Beauty 6 Painting and photography print on Kodak metallic paper (C-Type) 90 cm

Long before capturing a photograph, Clara Mill enters into a writing process. In a world of perpetual evolution and revolution, where the common rhythm is most important, she chooses to testify about the uniqueness of human beings. For Clara, life is a journey that slowly reveals the spine, the “architecture” of relationships between human beings and an unseen world. In her creative process, she uses photography, drawing, painting and writing to sculpt and compose her final photographic capture. Her work is a neverending research of identity, framing her image from a different angle, allowing the audience to approach and confront the scene from a different perspective. Clara is French and English and lives between London and France. Clara was awarded the “LORENZO IL MAGNIFICO”, Special prize at “La Biennale” of Florence, Italy 2019. She has been in group shows in Rome, Florence and Naples in Italy and Chicago, USA, London and Paris, as well as Nantes and Marseille in France where she also had solo shows.

“My work varies from 1:6 scale to life-size and I have been an artist for a short seven years. I retired seven years ago from Nestle USA in the marketing sector. I did not start my current art career until after I retired. Sculpting and working with plaster was my first desire. I was blessed with raw talent and I would watch YouTube videos to develop my skill set. Most of my work is finished in Bronze or Iron utilizing various patinas to complete a piece. I have shown in many competitions and galleries in Knoxville, TN but I consider myself a recluse artist waiting for a market that would appreciate my style. With that said I will be moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico in September 2020 to devote 100% of my time to my craft and working with a foundry to cast the larger images.”
