INTRODUCTION

It is a great pleasure to introduce the fourth volume in the series Current Masters. We originally conceived this title as an addition to our longrunning series “International Contemporary Masters,” which would present younger master artists and new, fresh work by established contemporary artists. The series has taken on a life of its own, and is now in its fourth year, having won critical acclaim and an enthusiastic readership. Whenever we distribute this title at art fairs, our supply is invariably exhausted. This volume presents the work of some 50 notable artists, as usual from nearly every corner of the world, and creating in nearly every medium and every genre of the plastic fine arts. As usual, our policy is to have a minimum of comment, and let the works speak for themselves. We hope that the reader, or rather the viewer, will derive as much pleasure from perusing this collection as we did in compiling it.

NICHOLAS H. TEETELLI United States of America As a fine art photographer from New York City, Nicholas Teetelli has spent the past four decades advancing his skills and winning awards both at home and abroad. He travels the world capturing a diverse portfolio including landscapes, architecture, portraits, flora and fauna, underwater, and street photography. Nicholas Teetelli is both a published and international award-winning fine art photographer. He was born in New York City and grew up in lower Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. During the late 1960s, and into the 1970s, the Village was a hotbed of culture and the arts. During this period, Teetelli was introduced to art and photography, developing an interest in what would become his lifelong passion. While rooted in New York City, he also called Europe home throughout his early years. Nicholas Teetelli is primarily self-taught. Over the last four decades, he has learned, developed, and advanced his skills independently, transitioning from serious amateur to professional photographer. He travels extensively throughout the world, and during each journey, with camera in hand, he records much of what he sees, sharing the impression of his mind’s eye through composition, light play, shape and design. His work is often juried and invited to exhibition in galleries and museums all across the United States, and receiving awards and recognition in international juried competitions, in such places as Moscow, London, and Tokyo. His work is often also featured at major art shows like Art San Diego, Spectrum Miami, and ArtExpo New York as well at European galleries in Vienna, Austria, and Bologna, Italy. ANNE SWAN MOORE United States of America

“Early life was filled with music since I was from a musically-inclined family. Barely into my twenties, I turned to painting and knew that would be my life’s creative endeavor. My first classes were at the McNay Art Institue in San Antonio, Texas, followed by classes with other private instructors to learn specific skills. Eventually, I attended the University of Houston and finished my Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting, where I was strongly influenced by John Alexander, James Surles, and British pop artist Derek Boshier. Still lifes, landscapes, arroryas, wetlands, contemporary interpretations of fruit, flowers and the occasional namesake swan have all been subjects through the years motivated by color and musical energy. When painting still lifes, it is important for the objects to be close at hand to explore the lines and variations of color and shape. If one visits my space it is evident that the assortments of living flowers or fruits, as well as dried collections, have their purpose. My intent is to capture the beauty of nature during the entire life process. Early as an abstract painter, my focus was on musical energy and movement, later moving to still lifes and landscapes varying them from an impressionistic style to a vividly idealized view. In this new series “In My Garden” I am seeking energy and movement of my original work, keeping techniques learned along the way. My paintings have been hung and featured in the Harris Gallery, Houston, Texas for two decades and in thirty gallery exhibitions over the past thirty years. They also hang in many private and corporate collections.”

TED LAU

Hong Kong Hong Kong artist Ted Lau was born in 1989 and began taking photographs as early as twelve years old. Now an award-winning fine art photographer, Ted Lau was brought up in a city where East meets West and his work has a strong influence from both cultures. Ted studied in London before returning to Hong Kong, where the western aesthetic had a further impact on him and his perspective. Being a self-taught artist, Ted loves to capture tranquil moments that are lost in a second. As his technical skills grew, he found ways to express beauty as he sees it through his lens. For Ted, beauty is a feeling, everything has to come together to produce an image that captures a fleeting moment of perfection. He has produced a number of stunning works and he still continues to travel around the world, striving and looking for that inspiration.

▲ Scratching The Surface Oil on canvas 36 x 36 in.

Wendy Cohen is a Sydney-based artist who has attained a BFA as well as MFA Degrees. Her art practice focuses on the relationship of color, shape, line, and form with realistic components that are communicated in a painterly language. By integrating shapes into a cohesive body of colors and forms in conjunction with collage elements, flowing ideas are arbitrarily manifested that bring attention to the brushstrokes, mark-making, and materiality on the surface of each painting. However, the primary focus of her practice is to transform the static space of each painting with synchronized contrasting colors highlighting its chemistry and resonance.

“For me, fine art nature and travel photography is about being a participant, rather than merely an observer, in a singular and unrepeatable moment when light, weather, location, and subject combine to produce an extraordinary scene. First and foremost, I am seeking extraordinary light. Most often that means the light of sunset and sunrise, as well as before and after storms. Once I have the light, I look for an appropriate subject that is illuminated by that light. I find that it is the light on the landscape that, above all, will evoke an emotional response in the viewer. I am drawn to photograph the small details in the landscape as much as the grand vistas; faces etched with character; and wildlife in its natural surroundings. My goal is not merely to record the scene, but rather to share with the viewer my emotional response to the scene. My goal is to create images that capture the poetic moments in the natural world so that the viewer feels the thrill I felt at the moment I pressed the shutter button and is moved the way I was moved. Through my choice of lens perspective and subject, my goal is to make the viewer feel as if he or she was standing next to me when I made the image.”

HOWARD HARRIS United States of America

A Denver native, Mr. Harris has lived and worked in Kansas City, New York, and Boston before returning to Denver. Mr. Harris is now focusing on dimensional photographic fine art. Harris’s exploration of dimensional photography began in the early ’70s showing his works in New York and Kansas City. “Visual reality is an ever-shifting, highly individualized experience. In any given moment, what we see reflects both our inner state and a synthesis of outer qualities—light, color, movement, space. My exploration in dimensional photographic art represents an attempt to recreate the perceptual experience, with its dynamic nature and hidden complexities. In my patented process, I use photographic constructions, a single, often abstracted image is layered over itself on clear acrylic surfaces and superimposed on a subtle grid. The resulting visual phenomenon infuses the image with a sense of dimensionality and fluidity affected by such changes as the angle of viewing and light. Yet perceptual mechanics are only part of the equation. Equally essential are universal principles of design that produce qualities we perceive as beauty. This is my aim: to skillfully combine technology and aesthetics in a way that expands the viewer’s experience of photographic art.”

“I moved to the South Shore of Nova Scotia in 2004 and have walked my dogs along this shoreline ever since as a flâneur of light watching the infinite variability of the horizon. When you live at the edge of a continent, the elemental force of weather, wind, and wave strips away your sentimentality for nature. You feel the power of the ocean at night as it grinds the granite boulders into sand. After storms, whole chunks of the shore will have disappeared. Hurricanes rip away wharves and deposit sofas on the beach. I did not set out to create seascapes. I’m a street photographer by inclination. The shoreline has become the street where I now most frequently wander.”

“I am Veronica Ibargüengoitia. I am from Mexico City, and since 2009, I have lived in Houston, Texas. Both these cities, with their dense urban fabric and large-scale architectural forms, have informed my painting process and artistic questions. In my paintings, I create images of architectural spaces which are both inviting and physically impossible. These images are imagined from photographs I have taken or received from friends. I edit the photographs by hand, reducing them down to their main structures, intentionally breaking the rules of the real architectural spaces they represent. The geometric forms in my paintings cross over each other, double back, and make unexpected and inviting entrances to somewhere. The paintings unfold in layers, which I imagine the viewer entering, step by step, finding pleasure in the conundrum behind the windows. In the end, perhaps she doesn’t realize quite how deep inside the painting she has gone.” ▲ Procrastinated Ideas, 2016 Oil on canvas 30 x 24 in.

BEA LAST Scotland

“My practice is process-led with an emphasis on painting in it’s broadest sense. I am concerned with creating Relationship, Dialogue, Placement, and Connection through the installation of large scale sculptural paintings, drawings, and digital film, using materials traditionally found in drawing and painting - graphite, paper, household paint, recycled papers, newsprint, and found materials. In 2016, Creative Scotland in partnership with UpLand Arts Organisation (www.covepark.org/artists/bea-last www.weareupland.com) awarded me a Visual Arts Residency at #CovePark Argyll and Bute -- a crucial stage in my creative process, allowing for supported developmental time. A pivotal moment which saw me take paintings off the canvas and explore both sculptural paintings and sculptural drawings, wall, and floor based. These are the types of pieces I am exploring and developing and are very much #WorkInProgress. Location, Space and Environment are vital to my practice in terms of social commentary and the landscapes we navigate both individually and globally and the engagement and dialogue that then ensues. Sketchbooks and working drawings are another vital aspects of my creative process allowing freedom of mark-making without self-consciousness. The Fluid energy created through these drawings is crucial helping me stay connected and move my practice forward.”

▲ The abandonded train tunnels of 1932 on top of the Wuthering Hill in Dalat, Viet Nam

“The woman contemplates herself in the mirror and the abandoned train tunnels on top of the wuthering hill... She ruminates about her fervent youth. The path was paved with roses in her eyes. Is it still lingering here? The desire, longing for a better future that once filled her heart... After sometime comes twilight; the dusk slowly casts its shadow on the train tunnels, and in some way, on her fate as well.”

His photography has been published in Australia, China, Germany, France, Russia, and the USA. Sykes says of his philosophy of his art: “The trick with photography is to find the stillness of the soul.” Through the curves of the catwalk, in the glamour of the game, in the blinding noise of battle — we must be still. As we waltz through the wedding, scrum the red carpet, run with the riot — we must move, and be still.”“We hold in our hands, the site of our seeing — we hold in our sight, the heart of our vision. As the light fades, the stillness grows — so still the soul takes us, out of sharp sight, into vast vision.” ▲ The Florist’s Workshop Nikon D810 Inkjet Print 40 x 60 in. (other sizes available)

Peng Feng, Professor at Peking University School of Arts and curator of the Chinese Pavilion at the 54th Biennale di Venezia, appreciates Fu Wenjun’s “Digital Pictorial Photography” and describes, “Fu Wenjun not only has paved the way for the technique or school of digital pictorial photography, his works also represent the manifestation of a wide and profound thinking on the society and life, which is very charming. As for FuWenjun, photography is not merely a tool to record reality, but a brush to express his ideas or feelings, a proclamation permeated with philosophy”.

As a rebellious man, the “anxiety of influence,” a theory described by Harold Bloom is what best defines the first stages of Würtz Jr.’s career. For him, self-distinctiveness means self-reflection, a self-ironic, intellectual journey. Würtz Jr. works on his etchings and paintings with extraordinary precision, humility and inspiration. His thematic envisaging of the problems of the future ages, however, is diametrically opposed to the chosen archaist technique. His dreamlike montages and intricate visual stories project story morsels that capture microscopic details with hidden messages of the ever-expanding, vividly interpretable universe. His complex works give a cathartic experience of discovery to all audiences. ▲ Just for You Mixed media on paper 37 x 55 cm

“Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, I’ve always had an innate creative interest in music, art, language, decorating, and design, to name a few. I am very fortunate to have been able to live a childhood dream professionally, for many years. This included travel, and the opportunity to live in Europe, with Italy as my home base. In years to follow, with a strong affinity for Latin Culture, my travels expanded to Brazil, Spain, Portugal, and France to explore the art, music, language, and cuisine of each country. Currently, with more time at my disposal, it’s possible to return to an early passion: Painting. In many of my works, the strong influence of earth tones, vivid colors, and textures, may all be apparent. One may experience a feeling of happiness, curiosity, spirituality, as well as passion. I consider myself a non-objective, emotional artist, constantly exploring various media and color combinations, to evoke a more profound response in the viewer. If I succeed, my mission is complete.” S T E P H E N W Y L E R @ A R TAV I TA • PA S S I O N A R T E 5 1 6 @ A O L . C O M [154] • CURRENT MASTERS IV
