I can’t think of a more pleasurable issue to put together than The World’s Most Glamorous Hotels, as I sit in my office flicking through the pages of this year’s issue, I think the projects are more than just inspirational from a design perspective, they also remind me that I need a holiday. I think that design books such as this are really ‘dreamy‘ books, which is probably their appeal. They are more than a series of wonderful projects, we can

take ideas and guidance from; they are a real three-dimensional place, sure we can look at them in awe but we can also visit them. We can actually stay there and experience the design scheme first hand. This year all projects are award winning design schemes, by leading designers from throughout the world - as voted for by you and more than 17,000 industry professionals in The International Hotel & Property Awards. These are the 2015 winning projects and they are as varied in style as they are in scope. I do hope you enjoy viewing and visiting on your global travels. Joanne

On the paradise island of Saint Lucia, just north of the equator, lies Hotel Chocolat’s 140-acre cocoa plantation, The Rabot Estate. The rich and fertile volcanic soil, high altitude and rainforest water all combine to create a unique environment perfectly suited to growing Hotel Chocolat’s fine and rare strains of cocoa. Nestled within a working cocoa plantation dating back to 1745, 1000 feet above the glittering Caribbean sea is the company’s 14-room award-winning “barefoot luxury” Boucan Hotel & Restaurant. Featuring interior design by top Londonbased Terry Moore Design and architecture from Phil Buckley of Hotel Chocolat, Boucan was created from the careful restoration of old working buildings and newly created structures. Terry Moore Design undertook the styling of the fine dining restaurant, bar and infinity pool overlooking the World Heritage Pitons. As an award-winning project at the renowned International Hotel & Property Awards 2014, Boucan claimed the Award for Hotel Design – Caribbean. Speaking about the importance of the IH&P Awards, Founder of Terry Moore Design added: “The Awards bring together colleagues from all over the world – global economy, global competition, global ideas and a global family.” The monumental scale of Boucan is jaw dropping. A real life Jurassic Park crackles into life before your eyes, the Piton Mountains towering majestically in a vivid, glossy riot of greenery and tropical flora. Everything has been meticulously thought out, from the show-stopping views to the perfectly positioned Lodges that catch the cooling and soothing tropical breezes drifting in from the Caribbean Sea. Better than any West End show, the natural stage unfolds every evening for an unforgettably dramatic experience. The golden sun gently slinks between the theatrical Pitons, resting finally behind Petit Piton for the perfect backlighting. Sitting and watching the sun set with a Cocoa Bellini in hand is an almost spiritual delight to the senses. A true slice of paradise, Boucan gives guests the opportunity to experience the unparalleled romance of a cocoa plantation.

18 The World’s Most Glamorous Hotels

They can enjoy the restaurant’s incredible cacao cuisine, treat themselves to a massage in the spa, explore hidden Caribbean beaches, or simply relax by the stunning infinity pool overlooking the Pitons. Using simple elements made by local craftsmen and wood and stone from the plantation, the emphasis is on simple relaxation throughout. Guests can stay in one of only 14 Lodges, designed in a blend of Hotel Chocolat’s contemporary style and traditional West Indian charm. Each is a pure cocoon of luxury and tranquillity, with a four poster bed and a walk in rainforest shower amongst the treats on offer. At Club Boucan, an area reserved exclusively for hotel guests, the black quartz infinity pool is 50 feet long and looks out over the Piton Mountains and rainforest, the still water perfectly mirroring the view. Reclining wood sun loungers with shade options are available along with the services of a dedicated club steward for drinks and food all day long. The onsite spa is just a short walk from the infinity pool and offers an array of incredible cacao inspired treatments, making full use of the beans nourishing, softening and hydrating properties. Teamed with mountain views from each therapy room, the wellness therapies promise to soothe and relax like no other. Boucan Restaurant was launched in 2011, and was soon met with adoration from New Yorkers who were able to pop over on a short-haul flight. It is now one of Saint Lucia’s most popular foodie destinations. The breathtaking minimalist design of the restaurant includes a soaring roof inspired by the shape of the cocoa tree, with its branches reaching to the sky, and shaded by the lush rainforest canopy. Its high platform makes it the ideal spot to appreciate the panoramic tropical views. From sipping a cocktail at sundown in the stylish bar, or delving into the pioneering menu, every part of the experience is a treat for the senses. The sweet and savoury nature of cocoa is explored, together with the superb local produce found on Saint Lucia – from the huge array of fresh fish and seafood, to delicate salad leaves, vegetables and plentiful fruit grown on the estate.

Drawing on Hotel Chocolat’s expertise as a chocolatier as well as a grower, the Treeto-Bar experience offered by the hotel is an opportunity for guests to create their own chocolate. The tour includes all the stages in between: seedling nursery, fermenting room, sun-drying station, grinding, mixing and lots of tasting! Guests can even plant their own cocoa tree, then come back in a few years to taste the cocoa it produces. The Rabot Estate demonstrates sustainability with everything it touches: environmentally, socially and economically. It has breathed new life into the Saint Lucian cocoa industry and the chocolate produced on the estate has since won several globally recognised awards. Hotel Chocolat was the first chocolatier to make single-origin Saint Lucian chocolate in 2007. Prior to this, all the local cocoa beans that made it to market were lost in mixed bulk sales and anonymous chocolate blends. Saint Lucia’s once-prized variety of Trinitario cocoa was in danger of disappearing into the history of chocolate. If properly fermented, dried, roasted and conched, Saint Lucian beans can produce chocolate with a dazzling array of tasting notes, ranging from classically rich cocoa to black tea and ripe yellow fruit, grassy olive oil and dry red Burgundy. Since opening, Boucan has been a wild success, drawing worldwide acclaim and celebrity guests. Saint Lucian chocolate has been firmly placed back on the map. In 2012, Hotel Chocolat created the world’s first ever single-côte chocolate bar, with cocoa harvested from the Marcial côte here. Billed by The Telegraph as the ‘world’s most exclusive chocolate bar’, with notes of ‘shiraz wine, antique oak, roasted cocoa and stewed spiced plums’, it was to swiftly sell out. Philip Buckley, Country Head, Saint Lucia comments:“A key part of our plan is helping Island growers to keep farming. By buying their harvests at a good price, we allow farmers to reinvest in their farms, and with technical support and access to higher quality cocoa, it is a win-win for everyone. Today, more than 166 Island Grower partners have joined us, and we could not be prouder that, working with us, their beans now create some of the officially finest chocolate in the world and that our ethical model of cocoa growing has taken hold on the island.”

“ The Donghia Suite, an homage to decorator Angelo Donghia, the firm’s founder, features a silver-leafed ceiling, Venetianstucco walls, and a bleached-and-lacquered herringbone floor. ”

The Gritti Palace, a Starwood Luxury Collection hotel, sits majestically on Venice’s Grand Canal. Following structural upgrades by architect Gretchen Alexander Harnischfeger, designer and Donghia creative director Chuck Chewning masterminded a top-to-bottom interior renovation.

the remarkable selection of artworks and antiques that adorn all private and social spaces within the hotel.

Chuck Chewning has been the design house’s creative since January 2008. The iconic luxury home furnishings company Donghia was founded by the celebrity designer Angelo Donghia in New York, in 1968. Angelo Donghia defined the interior design vocabulary of the 70s and 80s — invitingly plump sofas and armchairs, textiles with intriguing multicoloured patterns, glossy walls and ceilings.

A 19th-century copy of Titian’s portrait of Andrea Gritti graces the Explorer’s Library, which is filled with old navigational instruments and books on discovery.

Studio Rubelli is a new interior design and product design company formed as a component of the textile house Rubelli S.p.A. in Venice, Italy which also owns Donghia. Studio Rubelli is based in both Venice, Italy and New York City. Venice’s Gritti Palace is all about romance. As British writer W. Somerset Maugham observed in 1960, “There are few things in life more pleasant than to sit on the terrace of the Gritti when the sun about to set bathes in lovely colour the Salute [basilica], which almost faces you.” Over the years, a number of crowned heads, art collectors, writers, and film stars have taken rooms at the Gritti, which has been through quite a few transformations since its creation in the 15th century as a nobleman’s home. The building served as the residence of the 16th-century Venetian doge Andrea Gritti, for whom it is christened, and, in the 19th century, became a private house that took paying guests. By 1902, it had been annexed by a neighbouring hotel and, in the ’40s, launched as an independent operation.

A Baroque church altar rail still serves as the front desk, while the lobby floors were relaid with new marble.

Chewning clad the library’s walls in a Rubelli damask and mingled Donghia furnishings— the sofas and cocktail table—with the hotel’s antiques. The mirrored Bar Longhi, named for the 18th-century Venetian master Pietro Longhi, whose six paintings, some valued at more than $1 million, hang on the walls - has new custom-designed Donghia furniture, including lounge chairs covered in a Rubelli brocatelle as well as tables. Stools in Rubelli faux leather are pulled up to the bar, which is made of a Baroque marble altar rail. The magnificent hand-painted ceiling beams in the dining room are antique, but the terrazzo floor is new, modelled after the Apollo Room in the nearby Palazzo Pisani Moretta; the brocade on the walls and the brocatelle on the antique chairs are both by Rubelli, and the antique sconces are Venetian.

From its beginnings the palazzo has been home to a rich collection of artworks, a tradition that originated with the noble Pisani family, and that continued with its successive owners including the Gritti’s.

The hotel’s premier suites are named for either famous guests or local landmarks and traditions. In the Hemingway Suite, many of the furnishings predate the renovation, including the Murano chandelier, the vintage mirror, the 18th-century walnut secretary, and the antique Venetian gilded chairs, which were reupholstered in a Rubelli brocade; the curtain fabrics are also by Rubelli, while the cocktail table and carpet are Donghia designs, the latter made by Luke Irwin. The room’s bed features an antique headboard and is dressed in Frette linens with a throw and pillows of Rubelli fabrics; the chairs and ottoman are antique, and the paintings are Venetian scenes.

Art in its many forms is an important part of the meticulous restoration, from the precious Rubelli fabrics that decorate guestrooms and suites, to the exceptional glass chandeliers precisely hand restored according to tradition by skilled glassmakers from nearby Murano, and from the beautiful terrazzo floors to

The Peggy Guggenheim Suite displays artworks intended to evoke the collector’s taste; the sofa is a copy of one that was in her Palazzo Venier dei Leoni (now the Peggy Guggenheim Collection museum). A Joan Miró etching overlooks the sitting area. The sculptural antiqued-mirror valances in the

28 The Worlds Most Glamorous Hotels

suite were designed by Donghia; a framed 1960s Hermès scarf hangs above the bed, and vintage Fornasetti plates are displayed between the windows in the bathroom, a Donghia light is suspended above the tub, which is equipped with Dornbracht fittings. The bath is sheathed in Cremo Tirreno marble. The Donghia Suite, an homage to decorator Angelo Donghia, the firm’s founder, features a silver-leafed ceiling, Venetian-stucco walls, and a bleached-and-lacquered herringbone floor. The chandelier and seating are all by Donghia; the two large paintings, of the Chrysler Building, are by Bobo Ivancich. To celebrate the long period John Ruskin and his young wife Ettie spent at Palazzo Gritti, where he wrote his famous book ‘The Stones of Venice, the John Ruskin Suite’s has a vivid floral wall covering which is offset by its striped curtains; all fabrics, including the velvet on the Napoléon III chaise longue, are by Rubelli. A 19th-century beamed ceiling distinguishes the Punta della Dogana Suite, whose sitting area is furnished with a Donghia-designed table and chairs; the curtains are of a Rubelli damask. In the bedroom—lined in a Rubelli stripe—hand-coloured Venetian etchings overlook the antique bed and bench; the Murano lamps (with Fortuny-fabric shades) are new. On the spacious roof terrace, The Redentore Terrazza Suite’s offers incomparable views of the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and the rest of Venice; the furnishings include armchairs by Dedon. This was an exceptional project that was immensely complex. There were extreme factors starting with working in Venice to respecting the historic fabric of a 500 year old celebrated building, while bringing it into the 21st century. After 15 months and an investment of $55 million the restoration has been artfully accomplished by treating the palace like a private home rather than as a commercial hotel. Each room is unique and somehow feels original. The entire building has been reconfigured to reduce the number of rooms from 91 to 82 (61 rooms and 21 suites), a roof top terrace commands panoramic views of Venice while a new Spa is operated by Aqua di Parma. The historic Gritti Cooking School has been revived. Chewning has infused the new interiors with a poignant sense of history.

FEI is a bar lounge in the first W hotel in the Pearl River New Town district, Guangzhou, in the third largest city of China. Completed in July 2013, it is the creation of designer Ryu Kosaka of Tokyo-based studio Aoyama Nomura Design (AND), a Japanese firm that has worked on many well-known restaurants and hospitality projects in Japan and, increasingly, around the world. Established in January 2006, A.N.D. is an interior designers’ collective who specialise in high quality design. The project was completed in collaboration with Rocco Yim, one of the most highly regarded architects in Hong Kong. Like all W hotels and residences, the newly opened W Guangzhou seduces the senses with fun, dynamic interiors and an inventive play of light. That same spirit translates readily into the design of Fei Ultralounge. Pulsating with palable and visual energy, the Fei Ultralounge is designed to turn up the heat in Guangzhou’s nightlife scene.

“ the newly opened W Guangzhou seduces the senses with fun, dynamic interiors and an inventive play of light. ”

A large cubic space with three glazed sides each 18 metre in length, that seems to float in the middle of the building’s façade, was given to the design team. They transformed it into a bar lounge of three layers (1000sqm approx.) covered by soft organic lighting skin with constant and organic modification – as if it is an aurora. The team created two design concepts to transform the glass box into the bar. The first technique was to cover the massive lifeless, architectural and structural glass opening with an innovative soft organic lighting skin. The skin of innumerable fibre optics controls colour and speed of flash, it sparkles with constant modification. The team managed to light up the whole wall with minimal numbers of light sources by using a highly detailed method of mixing the fibre and finishing gut. The lighting sources are placed inside of the ceiling, so it is easy for maintenance. Even though the fibre is 18m long, each fibre was worked by hand to achieve an even illumination. In the daytime it becomes a delicate transparent screen and it softens to allow the sun light to pour into the space. The result is that the enormous, cold glass curtain wall has been covered in a film of warm light. The colour and flicker rate of the film, made up of countless glass fibres, can be sensitively manipulated to envelop guests in changing light. The film also creates a facade that sparkles and beckons passers-

38 The Worlds Most Glamorous Hotels

by down the street. The second concept was to place multilayers of horizontal floor and perpendicular wall in the space surrounded by light. In doing so, individually-segmented ‘spaces’ with differing distinct density and taste were created, such as a VIP area and several private rooms. This offers guests a variety of settings and allows them to choose a space according to their mood. Glass balconies house semi-private seating and lounging areas—from booths to expansive leather couches—while two private rooms provide an exclusive perch with see-through areas from which to see and be seen. Avant-garde chandeliers, a sculptural bar and glowing cocktail tables provide just enough light and further elevate the artistic ambiance, as does a magnetic mixture of jewel hues ranging from ruby to sapphire to amber. The designers say that they have used a “carefully devised technique” to reflect and amplify the light. This treatment has never been done before in the world, Kosaka said at the launch. “We used light to give the space an original expression.” “It changes, like the northern lights – sometimes provoking, other times sensory,” he said of the lighting effect, whose energy can seen from the street, enticing visitors as they turn into the hotel driveway. From the inside, the lights form a dazzling backdrop for the stage and permeate every corner of the cavernous space, which Kosaka carved into staggered levels with smaller nooks of varying heights to create more intimate party spaces. Electric in atmosphere and ambiance, FEI unites an audacious location—suspended from the side of the hotel, a lavish and luminous design fusing style, dynamism and excess, leading to one surprise after another. The aim was to expand the Chinese hotel market by the high impact design. The organically sparkling façade is alluring to not only hotel guests, but also to people walking by, to attract them into the bar. As a result, FEI has been defined as one of the most popular bars in Guangzhou. FEI suggests the new style of ‘having fun at a hotel’ is the future in the rapidly developing China, and Chinese hospitality sphere.

The Protea Hotel Balalaika on Maude Street, in Sandton, is located in Johannesburg’s economic heartland. The hotel’s charming colonial theme is accentuated with wooden elements and delicate floral accents. The resident pianist conjures images of the hotel’s history, which is celebrated through artwork, framed press clippings and memorabilia of bygone days. Being the first original business of Sandton, Balalaika was established in 1949 as a tea garden rest stop between Johannesburg and Pretoria. To this day, the hotel’s two sections overlook the famous luscious gardens and indigenous trees that enclose the two swimming pools. The English countryside atmosphere defines this hotel as a little bit of country in the heart of Sandton. Birdsong makes guests forget that they are in a bustling metropolis.

“ Darley Interior Architectural Design, is a piloting design company, who specialise in creating exclusive interior design solutions for projects with a focus on hotel, resort, airport, spa, corporate offices and luxury residence design. ”

The hotel is within walking distance of many tourist and business locations – Sandton City Shopping Centre, Nelson Mandela Square and the Sandton Convention Centre. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange is on the Balalaika Hotel’s doorstep as is Deutsche Bank, ABM Amro, Nedbank, RMB, HSBC and Investec. In March 2013, DIAD – Darley Interior Architectural Design, led by Shiree Darley, based in South Africa, was appointed to put together a concept for the refurbishment and procurement of the Lobby Reception area, Lobby Lounge (including the “Oval” Coffee Bar), the Men’s and Ladies’ toilets at lobby level, “Lord’s” Cigar Bar and lastly the Banqueting/Conference Level consisting of a large Pre-function space, a Ballroom and four other fully-equipped meeting rooms that cater for up to 350 people. DIAD would be responsible for finishes, building work and soft furnishings. One of the greatest challenges DIAD faced was to keep the areas under refurbishment fully operational during the six month transformation, this was successfully achieved. The design team of were asked to “introduce a sense of new energy into various spaces, to create an uplifted character for the hotel while remaining true to its well-known reputation as “A little bit of Country in the heart of Sandton”. “This adage, along with the beautiful gardens of the Balalaika, were in essence the spark that inspired DIAD’s Design Concept,” commented Shiree Darley, Chief Executive at DIAD. Entering from the Main Reception Lobby, ones’ path is led most directly through to the terrace and the beautiful flourishing gardens. In an effort to integrate the interior and the exterior, a more botanical feel was introduced into the lobby through bright, uplifting colours of duck-egg blue and

48 The Worlds Most Glamorous Hotels

pistachio green and patterned florals in both fabrics and the custom-designed carpeting. Whilst incorporating the garden feel, elegance and an up-market ambiance was essential. “Simultaneously, DIAD wanted to ensure that the style of chic country became part of the mix. A punchy wow-factor was achieved through the use of black combined with gold-leaf and yellow,” said Darley. “In order to create a continuity throughout the hotel – which was a key concern for both DIAD and the Balalaika – the same base colours were used in all areas where carpeting was replaced, with a couple of key colours changing in the area. This allowed for the development of individual creations for each different area, emphasising different colour theming while establishing a holistic feel,” said Darley. The carpets in the conference areas were dyed various shades of grey, the carpets in Lords Bar are a specific tone of red and shades of blue were used for the carpeting in the reception area. “The feel of the Lords Bar was destined to maintain its English club, cigar lounge atmosphere and the custom-designed carpet was a key aspect in achieving this,” commented Darley. DIAD – Darley Interior Architectural Design, is a piloting design company, who specialise in creating exclusive interior design solutions for projects with a focus on hotel, resort, airport, spa, corporate offices and luxury residence design. With a portfolio that extends from Africa to the Middle East, the Indian Ocean Islands and Europe, DIAD’s international design language delivers unique, inspired solutions tailor-made to each individual project. DIAD’s refined approach incorporates a unique understanding of the client, an awareness of location, budget and programmatic constraints, defining the “projects” individual identity and enabling it to be delivered on time and within budget. Their understanding of client expectations and operational requirements supported by comprehensive design documentation ensures effective implementation of their creative vision. DIAD threads these qualities through each and every distinctive project design, pushing and redefining boundaries, realising their clients’ imaginations. A vibrant assembly of talented, dynamic designers, DIAD has extensive global experience having been commissioned by recognised international operators and developers. Their designs for the international hotel and luxury residential market provide clients with a signature, exceptional edge and sought-after destinations.

Situated on the north coast of Mauritius, in Kalodyne close to the fishermen’s village of Grand Gaube, the hotel is totally unique with its 100% Mauritian concept. Zilwa Attitude is not only an encounter with the Mauritian people but also an experience of the Mauritian art de vivre by the sea. The hotel also boasts 4 beaches and 2 small private islands. Throughout the hotel, there are tributes to the national heritage, including Mauritian writers, painters, architects and craftsmen. The contemporary “rustic chic” architecture and Mauritian design of the hotel take their source of inspirations from the traditional bungalows charming holiday homes built along the beach - and the typical ‘boutiks’ - the Creole name for the last century grocery shops, with their thatch, tin or shingle roofs, their wax-polished “béton ciré” floors, their rough walls, their bright colours and other materials, all of which are reminders of island lifestyle: sand, pebbles, floated wood, ceruse and rattan furniture. The 214 rooms have been customised and designed to match the

needs and expectations of each guest; in each category, the rooms have their own identity and personality. The paintings on display are inspired by the Mauritian writer and painter, Malcolm de Chazel. Guests will be able to discover his majo works, among which the simple, almost real, colourful boats painted with gouache. On the cushions, a reminder of his poetry, themes taken from the sky and the sea, an invitation to faraway lands. Written on the walls throughout Zilwa Attitude are ‘sirandanes’ - Creole riddles, playing on everyday words. They are fun, poetical and full of wisdom. True to the hotel concept, guests can discover in any of the 6 restaurants, a delicious cuisine, blends of spicy and exquisite tastes, a culinary know-how acquired from the cultural diversity of the island. At dusk, comfortably seated in sofas and bean bags, feet buried in the sand enjoy the peace and serenity of the tropical night and admire the magnificent moonrise over the silver lagoon In keeping with the design concept of the hotel, all of the furniture and coconut fibre carpets were created especially for the project buy local craftsmen. Mauritius has long been the luxury long-haul destination of jet-setters seeking the ultimate exotic escape. The awe-inspiring archipelago is a collection of stunningly beautiful islands surrounded in the tranquil turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. A true tropical paradise, Mauritius naturally boasts some of the world’s finest accommodation and hotels. Therefore it takes something particularly special from this region to impress the industry, particularly the International Hotel and Property Awards short-listing panel. LUX Resorts were able to achieve the incredible however when they commissioned globally acclaimed designer Kelly Hoppen to design their Belle Mare Ocean Villas resort. Belle Mare is one of the island nations’ quieter districts; an inviting expanse along the island’s exclusive Eastern Coast which enjoys a favourable climate all year round and unspoilt stretches of white sandy beaches.

“ As is Hoppen’s signature style, the Villas possess a relaxed elegance thanks to decadent textures, clean lines and the finest furnishings and fixtures available. ”

Nestled in manicured tropical gardens, this palatial resort comprises a world-class spa, 3 championship-inspired golf-courses and even a specialist ice-cream parlour. Furthermore, a lusciously large pool complex hosts many social engagements to the tune of a relaxed summer soundtrack and delicious, indulgent cocktails. It is the perfect spot to recline on one of the many loungers and enjoy the resorts chilled-out, sun-soaked ambience. The hotel enjoys an enviable location alongside one of the finest beaches on the entire island, blessed with soft sands, crystalline waters and a lagoon which is home to a vibrant host of sea-life. The resort itself is unrivalled in terms of the quality of facilities and leisure activities on offer to guests however the aspect which really sets Belle Mare apart is the stunning interior design elements to have been implemented by Hoppen during her collaboration with LUX Resorts. The design across the resort takes inspiration from the Island Light concept, which is the signature of all LUX* properties – a lighter, brighter interpretation of luxury. Hoppen made use of a neutral palette of white, cream, taupe and beige which naturally mirrors the organic tones of the sand surrounding the hotel. Artistic contrast was created as the chic neutrality was layered with bright and zingy accent colours; turquoise, fuchsia, soft yellow, apple green, chinese red. These accents brought the vibrant nature of Mauritian culture alive

within the resort and maximise that all important holiday feel. Fabrics, predominantly linens and cottons, complement other beach-inspired textures – such as water – such as lacquered surfaces, bleached wood trestle tables and tongueand-groove bathrooms. In-room collateral has been kept to a minimum, allowing Kelly to place more emphasis on carefully selected artwork and objects for a truly personalised, homely, atmosphere in each room. The London-based design queen worked with native architects Christophe Gébert and Stéphane Fabre who have designed and built distinctly Mauritian villas to ensure the resort maintained absolute authenticity whilst offering guests the highest standard of contemporary hospitality. True to island tradition, the combination of high sugarcane thatched roofs and volcanic rock walls make the villas seamlessly blend in the tropical gardens, whilst allowing for tall, cool interiors. The interior design is another nod to the crossroad of civilisations that is Mauritius. The hotel offers a variety of accommodation to fit a range of needs, budgets and desires. From the honeymoon suites to the large Ocean Villas, this resort can cater for every type of holiday and traveller. The 8 Ocean Villas are perhaps the most impressive aspect of this incredible complex. Facing out onto the vast beauty that is the Indian Ocean, each Villa has a stunning private walkway leading to the beach which gives the entire space a feeling of being a personal paradise. As is Hoppen’s signature style, the Villas possess a relaxed elegance thanks to decadent textures, clean lines and the finest furnishings and fixtures available. The rich granite bathroom and its sunken bath is totally irresistible, with its picture window overlooking the private swimming pool. If the Bell Mare Ocean Villas resort is paradise, the Ocean Villas are an oasis of calm within it. This wonderful project continues to impress guests and enjoys much praise as being one of the best contemporary resorts in the world. The combination of a perfect location, substantially talented designer and exemplary hospitality have made this a design and travel treasure. Recently selected as the number one luxury hotel in Mauritius, Belle Mare shines with the vibrant energy and hospitality of authentic island life and is a definitive destination for those seeking sun, style and escape.

“ The Mukul Resort enjoys an enviable location on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast, so called because of the lush, dense green foliage which covers the coastal aspect of the country. ”

It is wonderfully unique and rare to uncover a true hidden gem. Particularly in relation to the hospitality industry, where the desire to capitalise on travel trends can often create a concentration of new and ‘it’ hotels in a particular area. Therefore, when a hotel can honestly claim to be the first, most exclusive and entirely private it is necessary that the industry takes note. Borrowing its name from the Mayan word for “secret,” Mukul Resort is the first luxury beach property in Nicaragua. The discrete and environmentally intelligent architecture blends harmoniously within the lush and extensive natural beauty of the site. Nestled on the Pacific Coast, this beautiful resort completely delivers on its promise of being a refined and remote sanctuary, off the beaten track and unspoilt by decades of clichéd tourism. The concept for this man-made paradise was the brainchild of native Nicaraguan businessman Carlos Pellas. As one of the most affluent men in South America, Pellas was well travelled and comfortably familiar with the world’s finest hotels. He desired to expose the beauty of his home nation without exploiting it. It was after much research and consideration that Mukul, Nicaragua’s only uber-luxury resort was born. There is of course a well established tourism and holiday culture thriving with the continent; the generous heat, oceanvistas and excellent travel links with Europe, America and Asia ensure the region remains a holiday hotspot. Understanding this, Pellas looked to Mexico, a holiday heavyweight, for inspiration and instruction. He hired a team of staff including managers, chefs and hotel workers to help make his dream resort a reality. Enamoured with the traditional South American architectural design known as palapas, Pellas recruited a Mexican artisan of this craft to help mould the authentic nature of his hotel’s design. His shrewd awareness of the South American tourism market and personal desire to create a definitive, premier complex ensured the end result was one of substantial brilliance. The result is a sophisticated, cosmopolitan hotel which can compete with the globe’s most well known luxury destinations.

76 The Worlds Most Glamorous Hotels

Whilst the very notion of creating a worldclass hotel in a location brand new to the market, is a significant challenge, Pellas eased some of the pressure by commissioning a reputable and elite architectural firm which could guarantee the project would be completed to the highest standard. HSK are one of the largest American architectural firms, with offices all over the world and a portfolio which showcases many of the world’s most impressive residential, commercial and hospitality designs. The Mukul Resort enjoys an enviable location on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast, so called because of the lush, dense green foliage which covers the coastal aspect of the country. In natural artistic contrast the dense sapphire tones of the Pacific Ocean further enhance the resort’s appeal and ambiance. HKS were aware of the need to utilise the optimum amount of natural resources, materials and designs for this project. There is a well established architectural tradition within the early wood and stone buildings that rim the Pacific Coast. These structures use indigenous materials throughout and offer minimal vertical expression. To take advantage of the incredible views and pleasant climate, these buildings have fewer walls, which make each structure feel completely open to the outdoors; HKS incorporated these authentic aspects within their design. Additionally, sustainable design principles are at the heart of the architectural approach to this project, HKS were determined to ensure that Mukul is not only energy efficient, but also employs sound environmental strategies to help regenerate the landscape. Structures are designed for optimal natural ventilation and use methods to collect rainwater for treatment and reuse. Solar power is harnessed, and electric vehicles are used for transport around the site. With invigorating offshore breezes, idyllic tropical weather and spectacular mountain and ocean views, this new seductive resort environment blurs the distinction between inside and outside.

In total the Mukul luxury resort comprises 1,670-acres,12 one and two bedroom villas which line the beach, 23 cliffside cohios (independent, free standing suites) spa complex, 18-hole golf course, and beach club. The Mukul Resort promises an indulgent, restorative and pleasurable stay for every guest. Each bohio and villa experience is unique and authentic, and each designed with its particular surrounding in mind – in harmony with the topography of its specific perch on the beautiful hillside or beachfront, overlooking acres of natural beauty, unspoiled beaches, and turquoise waters. A project of this size, scale and significance would be a dream for any architect and the HKS team were passionate about every individual aspect being a bona fide representation of Nicaraguan culture. A spokesperson for the firm was able to reveal the artistic narrative which permeated the project and all of HKS’ work. ‘I continually strive for architecture that is rich, multi-layered, expressive and culturally relevant. I am driven to create places that move people (physically, emotionally and spiritually), that gather people, and, that attract people. It is not enough to create something understandable and memorable. More importantly, it is about creating something extraordinary, compelling and meaningful. This approach is the single most important way to differentiate my work from my competitors.’ Hence, the Mukul Resort’s substantial success. The hotel offer’s its guests the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in traditional culture, relaxation and escapism; the scarcest, almost sacred, of joys in our modern day life. To have opened up a previously unexplored country to travellers, and to offer such a high-standard of accommodation, facilities and representation of Nicaragua is a true feat of design, business and personal ingenuity. A gem of the hospitality industry; the exceptional level of craft and care to have created this hotel makes it one of the World’s Most Glamorous Hotels for more than the surface-style of the impressive resort.

Rooftop bars were once the reserve of Hollywood’s elite and the world’s wealthiest however they have since become the hallmark of every contemporary city and the hippest hospitality spots. For this reason it has become necessary for architects and designers to dream up original and ever more impressive ways to make their rooftop concept stand out from the crowd. dwp are one of the world’s best known design and architecture firms and their status as one of the global greats has been cemented in their having won International Hotel and Property Awards for three consecutive years. Whilst entirely unique, each of their designs posses the signature dwp standard; decadent, elegant, understated with class and cool in spades.

“ Knowing that Chill would become one of the hotspots on the Asian social scene, dwp were careful to implement a design which would remain timeless and retain its awe-inspiring impression throughout the years. ”

Their involvement with designing and implementation of Vietnam’s first rooftop bar was a particularly praiseworthy project. Not only did this design embody the firm’s exceptional and inexhaustible talents but the popularity and esteemed status the bar went on to earn has allowed the city of Saigon to count itself amongst the world’s most fashionable and desirable locations for jet-setters. Designed as a ‘skybar’ concept, Chill Restaurant crowns AB Tower, comprising two levels, on the 27th and 28th floors, with an upper lounge and lower dining area. Smoked mirror walls create an illusion of endless space in the small lobby where guests are greeted before venturing to the outdoor cigar lounge where live jazz and warm lighting mix over resplendent views. The A-list Vietnamese celebs and models who have made this their watering hole of choice may beg to differ, but the real star of the show is the stunning view over Saigon, which can be found at the private balcony of the VIP room at the end of the lounge. The bar maximises it’s incredible location to full effect. The outdoor terrace invites guests to enjoy an unrivalled photo-opportunity as a range of multi-coloured LED lights mirror the cool electric glow of the city below. Turquoise and lilac tones bring a contemporary ambience whilst the neutral tones of the table ware and clear glass structures ensure the panoramic views of Saigon are undisturbed. The dining area is an expansive space offering flexible seating arrangements which

86 The Worlds Most Glamorous Hotels

can facilitate intimate dining or larger, corporate events with ease. Upholsteredleather chairs and the finest and glassware ensure the restaurant can compete with the most exclusive eateries. The open-style kitchen is in keeping with the Asian tradition of show-cooking and the service area is formed from an expanse of black marble with white contrasts for a striking focal point. Of course, Chill’s elevated vantage point ensures each table enjoys the view, with the city-side of the restaurant benefiting from panoramic windows. Unlike some other establishments in its class, Chill invites warm, vibrant dining and hospitality. The restraunt, terrace and upper lounge enjoy open plan designs which strike the perfect balance between informal socialising and a premier entertaining space. Chill embodies Saigon’s friendly and easygoing atmosphere whilst ensuring the most special of occasions can be savoured by having the hallmark of high-end hospitality guaranteed. Knowing that Chill would become one of the hotspots on the Asian social scene, dwp were careful to implement a design which would remain timeless and retain its awe-inspiring impression throughout the years. The neutrality of the colour palette used for the main aspects of Chill’s design are the perfect foundation for the more modern lighting and design schemes used to create the memorable ambience the bar possesses. dwp’s intelligent design ensures the space reflects not only current Vietnamese culture but honours their classic traditions and values. With an exciting, varied menu and fullystocked bar awaiting your request, Chill is the perfect place to spend an evening, long-lunch or brunch date. The bar is a compliment to the city it proudly looks over and dwp’s design ensures guests enjoy all aspects of the restaurant’s offerings. This SkyBar would be just as at home in Manhattan, London, Sydney or Dubai but dwp’s design team have been considerate of Saigon’s personal identity and the lively, fun, exciting nature of the city are reflected in many elements of the space. The general ambience of the bar is testament to its name however Chill is now firmly established as one of the hottest night spots on the globe.

“ From the lobby to the spa, the restaurants to the rooms, the hotel sets new standards in luxury and guests experiences. “

Located at the 46th Level of Westin Singapore, the Presidential Suite offers an incredible view of Singapore’s skyline. The interior design aspect of this stunning suite was implemented by Singaporebased firm FBEYE International. Whilst the majority of their team hold prestigious qualifications from UK universities, their city centre location ensures they have a deep understanding of Singapore’s style and the tastes, expectations and preferences of its residents. The Presidential Suite of Westin Singapore benefits from panoramic windows for an unrivalled view of the city’s stunning bay area. An exclusive, premier residence with one of the city’s most sought after postcodes; this is a highly desirable living space and therefore it was esstential that the interior design was befitting of such an elite location. FBEYE’s team were able to deliver on this promise and exceed the client’s expectations. The overall design is one of contemporary class and elegant sophistication. Unusually for a hotel, the suite was designed in such a way as to ensure a tangible sense of homeliness and comfort throughout the expansive space. The design team implemented many personalised features to generate a lived-in, dream-home essence to the room which is sure to see many guests returning to and requesting the Presidential Suite time and time again. The sophisticated residential ambiance features santos rosewood panelled walls and eco-friendly wallcovering accented with stainless steel strip channels. The effect is one of modern style with classic craftsmanship. The use of rosewood provides an atmosphere of affluence to the room without being overbearing or all-consuming in the way darker, more traditional wood grains often can. The design is one of gentle, subtle comfort as opposed to all-out decadence and loud patterns. FBEYE’s design ensures the suite’s breathtaking vista and generous proportions take precedent. The entire suite is covered in soft grey marble with inset of custom-made rugs that capture the contemporary botanical design concept of the hotel’s brand. Botanical imagery and themes is also a typical element of traditional oriental design, and the same

96 The Worlds Most Glamorous Hotels

motif is used prominently within the hotel room however the design team were careful to ensure a contemporary take kept the space feeling light, modern and a true reflection of the current Singapore. There are many subtle but significant touches which make this space so attractive. A range of key features were distributed around the suite; sustainable paulownia wood veneer on the living room ceiling, a sweep of handpainted silk wallcovering in the dining room, carefully selected black penshell to clad the bathroom TV wall & exclusively produced leather for some furniture pieces. It is the small but essential elements such as this which make FBEYE’s design so striking. The entire space feels private and relaxing as the design is cohesive and coordinated throughout which aides the sense of it being a sanctuary within the busy city. One of the main successes of this project is the team’s ability to blend Eastern and Western culture seamlessly. The suite has all the necessary design elements found in the world’s best hotels yet negates the typical anonymity of a hotel room. It is evident that the design is not a uniform or blanket concept for each room in the hotel; the space is filled with fixtures and fittings which have a true sense of identity within the city and the suite itself. The suite comprises a living space, separate dining and bar area, master bedroom, dressing area and oversized bathroom. As the hotel caters to the business traveller, the suite features a separate study which can facilitate small conferences. Each room features individual design elements which balance the overall harmony of the space. The expansive master bedroom includes a lounge area, vanity dresser and a separate gym area. The bedroom is predominantly designed in neutral tones of cream and white whilst olive was chosen for the rug design, chairs and ottoman which brings a sophisticated pop of colour to the space. The bed is placed beneath a feature headboard, the panels of which form a cocoon-like separation for the bed itself. The room opens to a spacious walk-in-wardrobe; the generous size of which would make this space enviable in any glamorous home, let alone a hotel suite.

This project is of course the source of much praise and pride for the FBEYE team. Their hard work and flawless implementations have served to make this suite one of the world’s finest and caught the attention of the International Hotel and Property Award’s shortlisting panel. When discussing the project, the company’s founder Warren Foster Brown accurately described the suite’s inviting ambience by saying, “From the moment one enters the Westin Singapore, a feeling of calm falls over each guest, a rejuvenating atmosphere awaits allowing guests to leave feeling better than when they arrived. A Sanctuary above the city, a refined style of residential luxury awaits to nourish the soul. Rich timbers, textures and fabrics enhance your home in the sky, with every detail thought through and every wish created even before a guest thinks about it. From the lobby to the spa, the restaurants to the rooms, the hotel sets new standards in luxury and guests experiences.” Appropriate for it’s sky-high positioning, the suite is the definite jewel in the crown of the Westin Singapore. FBEYE were able to enhance the hotel’s appeal as one of Singapore’s finest hospitality residences with their beautiful design. Each aspect of the suite has been given complete care and attention. The master bathroom features ceiling to floor marble, a large stand-alone tub and steam shower with indulgent spa features. The clean, crisp white colour palette is complimented by a large, mosaic-tiled mirror which doubles as an effective lighting illusion to make the room feel brighter and bigger. The interior design elements of this project were just one aspect of FBEYE International’s involvement. They also commissioned bespoke-designed furniture pieces for the suite. The high-back living chairs, high-gloss dining furniture and colourful chaise lounge showcase the team’s product design talents in addition to their artistic flare for interiors. The Presidential Suite is a luxurious urban retreat that offers both a space for work and leisure whilst combining the best aspects of premier hospitality and home comforts.
