14 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

This has to be one of my favourite publicatiopns of the year the annual “World’s Most Glamourous H o m e s ” which gives us all the chance to look back and select our favourite projects of recent times. As always, the projects are as varied in design style as their creators; with a broad spectrum

of design ideas in mind, we aim to cover a wide range of schemes from the contemporary urban space to the period house - with everything in between. I love the variety of schemes this year, each and every one designed by a shortlisted designer from The International Design & Architecture Awards. I do hope that this year’s World’s Most Glamorous Homes offers you a little inspiration, some escapism and the chance to immerse yourself in a series of homes from around the world. Joanne

A house of palatial vision, Patrick Ahearn’s Grand Country House is an intimate, historically inspired country home that celebrates the natural topography and arborous nature of its site. Although the home is newly constructed, it looks and feels as though it has stood for a long time, rooted in its foundations and in scale with its surroundings. The past is echoed through the use of the rustic “swirl” rough sawn siding and New England Field Stone as primary exterior materials. The tall stone chimneys flanking the main façade reinforce and celebrate the symmetrical and timeless nature of the design. The interior millwork, details, and finishes also speak to the classic interiors of grand country homes of the 1920’s-1930’s in New England.

“ an intimate, historically inspired country home that celebrates the natural topography and arborous nature of its site. ”

The house is designed for indoor and outdoor living by allowing its owners to flow through the house in multiple areas. The formal entry arrival courtyard sets the tone for the house to unfold. The boxwood plantings emphasize the formal entrance to the home creating a feeling of anticipation as the home graciously welcomes its guests. The major pine trees that flank the house in the distance create a cocoon like environment. The entry foyer establishes a spine through which one is drawn to the rear courtyard without having to travel through other primary living spaces. The perpendicular axis and circulation galleries provide a clear delineation of the primary spaces, which unfold off this spine. In a similar manner, the second floor galleries define a strong circulation pattern that allows one to navigate the house through two stairways. The primary stairwell is capped by a copper skylight, bathing the two floors with sunlight. Each wing terminates at separate outdoor porches, one open-air and intimately scaled while the other is designed to accommodate larger gatherings and can be utilized yearround due to the flexibility of the removable screens and the outdoor fireplace. The clients desired a rather large program within an intimately scaled home evoking a “cottage” vernacular. This was an obvious challenge, however, the project was successful due to the “H” shape footprint, cleverly never exposing a guest to the true scale of the overall square footage (15,000 square foot), resulting in a wonderful “cottage” family homestead. Another delightful feature of the “H” shape is the creation of both an entry arrival court, which sets the formal tone for the house to

24 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

unfold, and a rear outdoor courtyard, which encompasses a wonderful bluestone terrace with a formal planting area. The flanking wings step back on themselves to further develop a sense of enclosure and the gambrel roof form allows for a meaningful second floor space while maintaining a relatively low cottage scale height of 26’. As a finishing detail, the planted window boxes were designed to reinforce the charming Hansel and Gretel character to the home, again to detract from the potential overall massing. As a result, the clients were extraordinarily pleased with the illusion of a 7,500 square foot home when in fact it is double the size. The topography of the wooded site and its location abutting conservation land required additional review and approval from the Weston Conservation Commission. The site presented setbacks from natural resources and wetlands, conservation land and public access to walking trails. This was a significant challenge with plans for a large program, however advantage was taken of the existing topography to create a full height walkout lawn level spanning the left side of the home. This allowed the majority of the client’s program to be placed on this lower level in a positive way and in doing so, reduced the footprint of the overall house while achieving the needs of the client. The potential oversizing of the house on the lot was avoided and the design was unanimously approved by all town boards that had jurisdiction over the project. The solution resulted in long views out to the landscape from the interior spaces, furthering the relationship of interior and exterior space. The Grand Country House holds two special and unique entertaining spaces including a billiard room and a wine/tasting room. The billiard room was inspired by a potential gentleman’s club room in the 1930s. The room, outfitted with a bar and fireplace, opens to the outdoor screened-in porch with an additional fireplace and seating area. One can imagine guests enjoying their cigars and whiskey cocktails after a formal dinner party. The wine tasting room, located on the lower level, is finished in the same stone used as the exterior base of the house with a brick floor that is carried through an arched doorway, leading into the wine room with a vaulted brick ceiling. The tasting room also has access to an additional exterior courtyard with an outdoor fire pit located on the left side of the home.

Katharine Pooley creates sumptuous, inspiring interiors for the most discerning clients. A signature refined yet eclectic aesthetic is widely acknowledged to have earned her a position as one of the most sought-after interior designers in London, and with it, commissions for landmark commercial and residential projects around the world. Her seamless service is characterised by charm, humour and an obsession for detail. Katharine and her talented 20-strong team deliver projects on time and within budget, without ever compromising on craftsmanship or style. Believing in ‘design without compromise’, her work is faultlessly chic and ultra-luxurious, teamed with stateof-the-art technology and design aspects as exemplified in this project. This 11,000 square foot Grade II listed property in the heart of London’s Mayfair was completely renovated, transforming it from a former office block to a private family residence.

“ the client wished for the restoration and reinstatement of the architectural detailing, achieved sensitively, but with a contemporary finish overall. ”

In particular, the client wished for the restoration and reinstatement of the architectural detailing, achieved sensitively, but with a contemporary finish overall. Being Grade II listed, it was important for the design to respect the classic, period detailing but to also be workable as a family residence. Katharine was therefore inspired to use a fresh, light palette and contemporary furniture and accessories in order to complement the traditional detailing. This rare gem of a property in the centre of Mayfair consists of 7 floors, including a basement and a roof terrace. The redesign involved extensive building works and project management with features including a glass lift shaft, several bespoke chandeliers, hand painted and embroidered wallpapers and complete designs for all spaces, including 7 bathrooms and a white onyx spa. The glass lift shaft running through the six floors of the property, elegantly connects the floors with a skylight at the top which beautifully floods the period staircase with natural light. The design works so well because it seamlessly blends a modern, contemporary finish with the traditional, classic architectural details of this Grade II listed building. The client also had an interest in one off, collectable pieces so the Katharine Pooley Ltd team commissioned bespoke lighting, sculptures and artwork such as the Niamh

34 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

Barry sculpture and the huge ombre crystal chandelier undulating through the entrance hall to truly bring the project together. Hand painted cherry blossom chinoiserie wallpaper in the dining room picked out the exact hue of a blue agate stone centered in an inlayed marquetry star burst on the dining table; an exceptional piece in terms of both craftsmanship and originality. In the main drawing room lapis scagliola coffee tables were commissioned to Katharine’s design and beautifully simple and understated Quartz crystal chandeliers softly light the detailed mouldings on the listed ceiling above. In a ground floor reception room Grade ll listed dark oak paneling was completed refurbished and juxtaposed with a stunning geometric chandelier, wall lights and monochromatic fabrics. A particular favourite in this room were the staggered black shagreen hexagonal tables designed by Pooley herself. The brief also called for the extension of habitable space to add value to the property, this was achieved with the addition of a roof terrace, ground floor terrace and an additional usable space to the basement. Included here was a gym, spa and private treatment rooms all clad in white onyx, Thassos marble and bleached Scandinavian timbers. This gave the homeowner a free space to relax and feel as if they were away from the home and able to escape from reality. This was an important returning client for Katharine Pooley who is short on time and spends a great deal of time abroad, therefore asked that the design team handle the entire redevelopment on their behalf. The entire property was designed and executed from start to finish by Katharine Pooley’s team of in-house project managers, interior architects, interior designers, landscape designers and stylists. Pooley stated , “My favourite aspect of the project was the precision engineered glass lift shaft running through the six floors of the property with a skylight at the top which beautifully floods the period staircase with natural light. Or in house interior architects ensured every detail was considered in its design and the resulting shaft has a beautiful sculpture quality unlike anything else I have seen in a private home in London.”

“ This project, the Beijing Runze Palace villa could be the most decadent and ornately decorated projects submitted to the International Design and Architecture Awards in recent years. ”

David Chang Design Associates International Ltd, also widely known as DCDA, is an international full service design company, with many a prestigious award for exceptional design under their collective belt. Originating in Vancouver, Canada in 1998, they later established offices in Guangzhou and Beijing in 2006 to provide space planning, interior design and soft furnishings services for major real estate developers in China. They have since completed real estate projects in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shenyang, Kunshan and Dalian, among others, with all of their projects very well received by the industry. Since their beginnings, DCDA have been setting impeccably high standards in development and design collection. Deeply influenced by Chinese and Western culture, David Chang emphasizes attention on culture and history as a source of inspiration, and thereby creates vitality and rich artistry for each and every project. Just some of the awards DCDA has won over the years include IDC Special Achievement Awards, IDC Best Restaurant Design Award, Georgia Award for Best Villa Interior Design, and also achieved an award for Global Residential Interior Design at the International Design and Architecture Awards 2015. This project, the Beijing Runze Palace villa could be the most decadent and ornately decorated projects submitted to the International Design and Architecture Awards in recent years. On face value, it is certainly impressive; on closer inspection, it is palatial, in a league of it’s own. The design of this majestic work of art by any standards, introduces the space concept of ‘Le Grand Chateau Extraordinaire’ in the words of David Chang himself, with vigor and a stern empirical style. He says, “With this design, we aim to build a new beginning; a top model for the future, a royal court model.” In essence, the palace of all palaces. Upon entering the property, the eye is immediately drawn upwards, to the vast opulence of the dome shaped ceiling above

44 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

the circular entrance hall. The golden dome is decorated with embossed patterns of geometric designs, and lit from below with a multitude of glowing and discrete lights, strategically placed above the ceiling borders. From the centre hangs a large chandelier, filled with a cocophony of candle style lights for a classical look. The hallway features a circular window, which from the outside will be illuminated by this chandelier, after dark. Twin balconies overlook the hallway and give the overall space a sense of romanticism, while also imploring reverence. Decoratively, the Beijing Runze Palace utilizes an eighteenth century social backdrop, when Oriental culture began to influence the West in a big way. In Britain at the this time, it was the height of fashion to blend decorative artefacts from the East with traditional English decor. Likewise, Western presence in China brought subtle changes to traditional Chinese styles of decoration and fashion. As a new era of international trade began, elements of French styling integrated into exquisite Eastern elements as well. Illustrating this, a golden Chinese painting on a black lacquered screen integrates beautifully with French Rococo Art Deco trims, silently telling tales of eighteenth century France, when artists’ adaptations demonstrated a profound yearning for a better life. Alongside these, the exquisite Chippendale furniture imbues the space with a mysterious eastern charm. Walking through DCDA’s Palace, an admirer of history and art would be lost for words at the sumptuous blend of cultures, while someone entirely new to design would still marvel at the illustriousness of their surroundings. A British-looking library, featuring floor to ceiling bookshelves laden with an extensive collection of volumes lining the walls, is embellished with gilded European-style furnishings in shimmering velvets. Fabrics in silver-aquamarine, off set against the gold and warm chestnut coloured frames and furniture, stand out against the dark wood panelling. A huge chandelier draped with shimmering crystals hangs, almost ominously, above; the luxury and indeed the weight of it very tangible in the room. This is a place for the esteemed and intelligent to draw plans, discuss momentous ideas and

turn dreams into strategies. There is more than one dining room within this building, as is fitting for a palace. The first, a long rectangular room, features polished stone floors that reflect more gilded embellishments along the walls, ceilings, and decorating the borders of featured artwork. A long dining room table big enough for more than 12 diners to sit comfortably, dominates the centre of the room. Here guests of formal dinner parties and dances worthy of fairy tales can enjoy the finest food and drinks, and the most scintillating conversation imbued with excitement that can only take place in a setting such as this. Long windows along the sides of the room allow light to dapple across the ornate finery, mixing with the soft glow of innumerable tall candelabras lining the centre of the table. The second formal dining room is octagonal in shape, with more domed and circular features on the ceiling emphasising this. In a distinctly empirical style, tones of jade green and crimson are integrated around the room, tied together will warm golds. The ceiling is again illuminated and boasts a chandelier this time decorated with intricately made red roses. This is echoed in the ornately floral patterned dining chairs, striking in their ebony frames, and the red arrangements of blossoms on the table. Bespoke cabinetry built into the wall panelling displays a collection of artistic vases and ornaments. Over the 18 years since DCDA was formed, the company have grown to comprise a team of more than 90 senior designers and an experienced project management team. Project areas encompasses luxury villas, city chic apartments, sales centers, clubhouses and hotels for developers as well as projects for elusive private clients. These can be found throughout North America and Asia. Their innovative designs have won numerous honorary awards from Canada, Asia and the rest of the world. DCDA’s team of passionate and inspired professionals consistently adhere to a system of quality, always considering the significance of practicality of space and revelation of details, whilst maintaining an unmatched enthusiasm for artistic creation within the ideal living space.

A contemporary refurbishment of a fivestory, 10,000 square foot Grade-II listed family home, The Boltons, by Carlisle Design Studio has been transformed and into an impressive and captivating space. The task for Carlisle Design Studio, who offer a bespoke personalised service specialising in truly unique design solutions, was to create a home suitable for entertaining, and also provide the owners with an environment where they could relax and feel at home in. The owners have two beloved dogs, who were also considered.

“ The precision of customisation and bespoke decor in this project is undeniably meticulous. ”

There were a few new additions, such as a conservatory extension at the back of the house, which provides an advantageous opening up of the lower ground floor into a light and spacious area for casual dining and relaxing. Key features are the uniquely fitted light fixtures creating their own distinguishing lighting ambiance for each room, allowing the owners to step into a new world over every threshold. Another new feature installed during the renovation is the bespoke wine store, created next to the large family kitchen, to make sure all a wine collection is adequately appreciated right where it should be: next to an exquisitely designed meal. The wine store is a meticulously thought out feature, designed so that each shelf is specialised for the specific type of wine. A centralised table was included to ensure the owners could take out each bottle, examine, study and of course taste them, to their hearts content. It is acknowledged that the entrance to a truly grand design wishing to make an impression, must have a grand entrance. Upon entering The Bolton’s home, the stunning entrance hall is immediately striking in its opulence: neutral tones used to accentuate space and height are accented with mirror detailing and geometric light fixtures which add an interplay of interesting textures. The colour palette is soothing and warm, filling any one coming in after a long day with a sense of contentment and serenity. Further down the hall, the sitting room boasts plush chairs to sit back in: sleek, yet comforting. The same tone and texture is carried on through the full length curtains and rug. For this project, all hand tufted carpets and rugs are designed and supplied by Colbourns. Relaxing with a book here, the dining room is just visible, designed exquisitely for family dinners or formal meals and larger gatherings. Upstairs, the general rule that no bedroom is complete without an exceptional bathroom is surely followed. While the bedrooms are indeed stunning, the bathroom is notably magnificent. Within this white, mink and

52 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

praline coloured room, a curved Art Deco reminiscent standalone bathtub resides next to a pearlescent vanity cabinet with single basin. This is artfully offset with vintage taps and an Art Deco inspired mirror, providing continuity in the details. A crystal chandelier floats above, dispersing light and dazzling over the specifically chosen snow white orchids. These stand in two waist height silver vases, showcasing sleek lines and reflecting sophistication. The rest of the upstairs is set apart with differing colour tones, revealing a more masculine personality within. The property features a bar area, dressed sensually in warm, wood-like colours, a perfect complement to the golden nectar in the finest spirit bottles and whiskey tumblers. This gentleman’s hideaway exudes masculine power and intelligent charisma, making it stand out as a both a luxurious space for entertaining the very closest of trusted friends, and enjoying a private drink. The precision of customisation and bespoke decor in this project is undeniably meticulous. Hand finished wall coverings, Italian marble, sumptuous fabrics and specialist surface finishes were all chosen to work specifically with each room’s palette. Interior ID provided unique items of bespoke fitted cabinetry, while other pieces were designed to update the aesthetic of the house to one of transcendent elegance and luxury. A purveyor of extravagant materials, Thomas James Furniture was chosen to supply some of the finest standalone cabinetry. Attention was lavished on the detailing of features from the intricate etching on the back face of a mirrored joinery panel to the curve of bespoke sequin decorations on a cushion. Matthew Carlisle, Creative Director for Carlisle Design Studio spoke about this project: “My favourite aspect of this project has to be the refurbished Library, for many reasons, but in particular the finely detailed joinery. It utilizes the great ceiling height perfectly and uses a rich, masculine palette of finishes.” Carlisle Design Studio are a part of Phoenix Prime - a multi-disciplinary collective of property and design experts who offer a holistic turnkey service for the world’s most exclusive real estate investments. They cover Brokerage, Architecture, Interior Design and Development Management; no stone is left unturned, to make each distinct project a pleasure and a home. While the house was completely transformed into a new luxury space, the personalized design gives the owners the feeling that it is still very much their own home, where they can truly be themselves.

Inspired by the distinctly British character and charm of the Thames Walk, One Tower Bridge is a luxury 170 square metre lateral apartment perfect for a stylish London couple, a family, or the chic business person with a penchant for at-home entertaining… Berkley Homes requested Casa Forma’s expertise on the planning and implementation of the interior design of this, one of the main show apartments. When creating the scheme, Casa Forma’s main focus was on practicality and functionality, whilst at the same time ensuring the space would be effervescent with the best in bespoke elegance and luxury. The result is a sophisticated and timeless design; a comfortable family home with what is undeniably one of the best views in London.

“ The interiors reflect the design of the building with beautiful bespoke joinery and furniture used throughout. ”

Three sumptuously large en-suite bedrooms provide this property with enough space to host weekend guests or family. Dark wood panelling over most walls gives the apartment a distinctly retro feel; very 1960’s chic, in an entirely liveable ensemble. Though it’s not unusual these days for master bedrooms to feature open plan ensuite bathrooms, it is perhaps less likely that the spacious bathtub will be constructed entirely from the same chocolate-toned wood that covers the walls. Sublime in is elegance, the bathtub sits to the side of the bedroom, only steps away from a luxuriously large bed, and in the perfect position to enjoy the London city scape beyond, while still maintaining privacy. The owner can relax here enjoying the view, or even a film on the the seamlessly inset, flatscreen TV on the wall above. Touches of greenery in graceful white flowers dotted about the room bring points of femininity to what could be perceived as a largely masculine room; although the overall ambiance of the interior is also very tropical-- a little capsule of escapism in the heart of London. A spacious living space features dark neutral tones in warm pralines and velvety chocolates, with highlights of cream in two unique-looking leather stools. Colours are brought to life in the space with the addition of deep blue-purple cushions and throws. A marbled-top coffee table sits like a jewel in the centre of the long, L-shaped couch and

60 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

two elegant armchairs. Light streams in from the expanse of window, showing the balcony and the banks of the Thames beyond. This surface is an echo and perfectly balanced continuation of the marble floor in the entrance hall. Lamps are dotted about the room; soft lighting for reading and setting a gentle mood for conversing with close friends. Outside space in the heart of London is a much sought after luxury; though this apartment is not in possession of a garden, anyone staying here has the whole of London at their fingertips, with these world-class views every ready to be enjoyed. The dining room is integrated with an open plan kitchen, allowing the owner to entertain and relax in peace, regardless of, and of course with the added benefit of, the bustling city centre location. Streamlined kitchen units have been installed repeating the use of the decadent chocolate wood, this time coupled with marble counter-tops and state of the art chrome appliances. Spotlights beaming down from the over-head storage units and the sleek fan above the inset electric stove, gild the kitchen space, imbuing it with a golden quality. The artfully mottled mirror that clings to the far wall is the only thing to show any sign of age, and has the effect of bringing this dream-like kitchen into the present once more, as well as subtly elongating the space. This mirror is part of the bespoke wall paneling installed especially to make the most of the magnificent views of Tower Bridge. Juxtaposing the otherwise dark interior colours, chocolates, parlines and deep indigos, the mirrors bring light into the space and will always serve magnificently in manipulating an ambiance in a party atmosphere. The interiors reflect the design of the building with beautiful bespoke joinery and furniture used throughout. Storage is sleekly hidden, built in to the wall paneling, with inset horizontal alcoves for displaying photographs and artefacts. The full length curtains which extend right from end of the room to the other pull back to reveal all of central London, and close to conceal this little haven from the world again; the perfect place to relax, knowing it’s all out there when you want it.

“ Continuous interior decor and colour palettes sweeping through these rooms helped to create the aspirational and opulent finish desired. ”

Completed in April 2015, Holm Oak, by developer Oakeve, is the new uniquely built ‘Arts & Crafts’ style country house, which marries together a traditional façade, with a contemporary, luxurious and sumptuous interior. Set in extensive grounds and manicured lawns, it’s an imposing picture, in all the best ways. Holm Oak was originally intended to be a speculative development, but as the client purchased the house ‘off plan’, it became a client-driven project with their specific brief driving the scheme. The client made it clear that they wanted to buy into an ‘aspirational lifestyle’ therefore Oakeve were tasked with creating a fabulous, luxurious and opulent new turnkey show home. Sympathetic to the ‘Arts and Crafts’ homes archetypal of the Buckinghamshire area Holm Oak resides in, the property features traditional external elevations contrasted with a very luxurious contemporary interior design, providing a very privileged quality of life. Natural light and spaciousness were cornerstones of the project. Holm Oak was north-east facing to the rear, meaning that the back entertaining rooms and kitchen could potentially suffer from poor light after midday. To avoid this many interior design solutions were included, as well as ample windows, roof lanterns, and extensive bifold doors, maximizing all available natural light. The house also features the best in technology to help with this: Lutron mood lighting works with Sonos multi-room audio to create enviable environments for guests and parties within the house’s sumptuous and extensive entertaining spaces. The flow of the house enables the residents to move seamlessly between spaces; this was an implemented design solution, which was given significant importance. Porcelanosa tiling and deep, fluffy carpets in neutral tones throughout help to create this airy continuity. Set at the heart of this beautiful home, Oakeve Interiors designed a lavish living space that aimed to meet the client’s brief to achieve ‘one large entertaining space’ between The Drawing Room, Bar Area and

68 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

Dining Room. Continuous interior decor and colour palettes sweeping through these rooms helped to create the aspirational and opulent finish desired; subtle taupes interjected with striking amethysts and a few unique and bespoke items of furniture make this design stand out. Sycamore veneered furniture sourced from Italy was complemented by luxurious purple velvet armchairs and deep, cosseting sofas, all manufactured in Britain. The Casamance, Effervescence wall covering was chosen to provide an opulent, reflective texture and was utilized on opposite walls of the conjoined Drawing and Dining Room to ensure light from the French doors and bay window was reflected, accentuating light and spaciousness. The drapes and blinds, from Osborne & Little, are a two-tone satin damask with a silky appearance. Pelmets were utilised to soften the window treatments and add a traditional elegance and indulgence to the room. Atmospheric lighting was critical within the design for this entertaining space, so Lutron Lighting was used as well as Porta Romana Crystal Strata lamps with rectangular amethyst velvet shades, chosen for their delicate design and luxurious finish. From a design view, these also complement the soft limestone fireplace and create a visually striking feature upon entry. Innovative storage methods were used such as creating oak paneled ‘secret’ cupboards providing practical storage solutions in a bespoke and unobtrusive manner so as not to compromise on living accommodation. This can be seen in various places, notably within the unique ‘ying yang’ centre island in the kitchen. This feature is a favourite of the designers’, and ensures a ‘wow factor’ and focal point for the scheme. Ms Iona Newton of Oakeve explained: “The client envisaged spending most of their time within this space, the open plan kitchen area was a key element.” Oakeve Interiors design and install their own brand of bespoke kitchen cabinetry and indeed no expense was spared here. A high gloss, lacquered Sabbia finish was specified, providing an effective light reflecting surface, further enhanced by the recessed uplighting,

creating a bright, contemporary, luxurious atmosphere. The team even managed to procure an Ebano display cabinet and dresser with a Macassar veneer and black mock croc detailing, providing texture and that touch of glamour, alongside black mock croc base units for ample storage. The large amount of textured silestone and walnut work surface provides an indulgent marriage of materials, complemented by luscious velvet breakfast bar stools. Oakeve took great care and attention during the spatial planning phase to optimise space and maintain a light, airy atmosphere; important, considering the oversized statement kitchen island. Practicality was also key: 900mm deep pan drawers were specified under the island countertops for ease of use. This island, by all means a box of wonders, also includes an integrated pop up TV and pop up S-box (housing USB and plug points) within the composite worktop, to ensure there is no change of material and clean, elegant lines are retained when not in use. Throughout the kitchen, electrical appliances are installed to a high specification and quality finish. Ms Newton said: “My most rewarding and favourite aspect of the entire project was when the client entered the Kitchen Area for the first time, as we had purposefully asked them not to visit site for two weeks whilst we installed, dressed and accessorised this main area.” Upon unveiling the finished project to the client, their immediate and powerful reaction was one of overwhelming delight: “We are simply over the moon, Oakeve have created the most luxurious kitchen and entertainment space, better than we could ever have imagined and it will indeed be the heart of our home. It has the ‘wow factor’ we’ve always dreamt of.” Oakeve is an award winning construction company with in-house interior design and architectural teams. They are based in Buckinghamshire and offer a comprehensive project management and turn-key service. Iona Newton started her development career nearly a decade ago as Director of Oakeve Limited. She now runs Oakeve Interiors to conceive aesthetically stunning and intensely glamorous designs.

“ With an affinity for the 1920s Art Deco period, the owners of this property have a sophisticated and refined style, which the designer has represented throughout his scheme. ”

Sole owner of Douglas Design Studio, Jeffrey Douglas is an award-winning interior designer with a unique combination of creative and design leadership skills and a track record of achieving extraordinary results for his clients. This project is an Art Deco style condominium, where traditional comfort meets modern convenience. Emphasis was placed on craftsmanship, artistry and the finest quality materials. The museum district of Toronto is reknowned for its galleries and famous spaces full of art and creativity. There is a plethora of artistic ambiences to amuse those interested; from edgy independent outlets to fine art dealers of venerable status. In the midst of this it’s not that surprising to find a luxury condomunium that could be a deemed a work of art itself. Douglas Design Studio’s 4,000 square foot apartment is indeed nestled in the cultural epicentre of the city, and happily absorbs and exudes creative energy all around. Jeffrey is passionate about art, extensive travel and takes a genuine delight in perfect detailing. Reflecting this, the condominium is a lively balance of functionality, luxury living and beauty. There are many pioneers of the ‘city pied-a-terre’ for jet-setting city slickers, but the difference here, notably, is Mr Douglas’ significant talent for combining antique pieces with modern furnishings in innovative ways, producing inviting rooms that are rich with history, yet fresh and contemporary, much like the world class art galleries decorating the city around this home. With an affinity for the 1920s Art Deco period, the owners of this property have a sophisticated and refined style, which the designer has represented throughout his scheme. The concept was to incorporate their love for the decadent period into contemporary living. Jeffrey explains: “Balance is the key when combining antiques with modern design. The pieces need room to breathe, otherwise it can be stuffy, and the space needs to respond with sufficient detail or it will appear cold and unrelated.”

Upon entering the property, the eye is immediately struck with a long impressive hallway, sporting multiple marbled archways through the length of the hall, and a beam of light at the centre and highest point of the curved ceiling, emphasising the tall space. A distracting yellow feature on the far wall imbues the space with a vague orientalism, and draws attention, actively inviting a visitor into the home. This burst of vibrant yellow is repeated a various points in the property, bringing sparks of warmth to the open and airy rooms, with vast views of Toronto. Most prominently, the dining chairs clad in yellow leather with contrasting dark frames surround a completely glass dining table, bringing a certain wow-factor to this spacious kitchen-diner unlike many other projects. In the familiy room, the city sweeps beneath the apartment; the owner only has to stand at one of the floor to ceiling windows to be bathed in light and to absorb the feeling of majesty that comes with surveying this bustling city by day, or twinkling metropolis by night. Full height chiffon curtains afford privacy and make the apartment less of a glass display case for luxury living; instead the city below is the owner’s to behold, from a precipice plush with splendour. The living room also features a large window with double doors leading to a balcony, however they are conceal with heavy curtains in a chic grey, toning in with the oyster colour pallete. Here the outside is less of a concern, as the mind is immediately able to relax amongst the plump pillows on the velet couch, watching the fire flicker from it’s polished smoke frame on the opposite wall. Spotlights dotted about the ceiling are dimmed to better enjoy the glow of the lanterns, set upon tall marbled pedestals either side of the fireplace, which throw washes of light upwards, heightening the room and adding glamour. “The concept of the space started with the client’s artwork and antiques,” Jeffrey

explains, “Vignettes were imagined then juxtaposed with more modern elements as in the 1930’s console in the entry combined with a modern Robert Kuo lamp against a goatskin wall.” “In a modern space,” he reveals, “I treat antiques as if they were sculpture. I leave room for them to breathe and be admired.” The result is a blend of traditional comfort with modern convenience, executed at the highest level of luxury. The owners of the apartment had been collecting for a number of years at the start of the project, therefore it became important to incorporate everything: “To keep it more clean and contemporary we added modern elements; a polished stainless steel fire-surround below a Jacques Riopelle painting in the living room; floating cantilevered glass shelves supporting a variety of glass art pieces in the library,” says Jeffrey. The kitchen is sleek and uncluttered and provides continuity in the smoky oyster colours used to make to space adamantly unisex. Top-of-the-range appliances line the walls and countertops while a suspended fan hovers, ultra modern and somewhat futuristic, over a stove mounted on the centre island. Within the same island, ample storage and a wine case is nestled. Everything is optimised for functionality, using only the finest quality of materials. Polished nickel and stainless steel dining room doors with a grill pattern over the glass open from both sides for easy maintenance. The list of unique and unusual features is a long one: wall finishes include goat-skin tiles, while top-stitched leather, Venetian plaster and stone slab, imbue various surfaces. Each room was considered structurally, most evident in the custom oval shaped living room, with an ethereal illuminated ceiling. A rather special closet opens to reveal a hidden office, while a custom designed powder room vanity cabinet is intricately built using carved marble legs and glass finials held through tension. Finally, the eglomisé fireplace surrounded with an art deco motif, hand painted by a local artist, in the master bedroom will be the last decadent feature for the eyes to enjoy before relaxing into sleep.

Winner of awards, designer of grand and opulent interiors with sumptuous modern features, London based Honky is one of the architectural and interior design practices to know. Founded by Christopher Dezille in 2001, this multi-disciplinary practice’s creative team is committed to providing exceptional design solutions including interior architecture, finish specification, interior design schemes and interior styling and installation. They specialise in concept design, and with Dezille at the helm, Honky has acheived a reputable 10 years of success.

“ A notable and very favourable key feature of this residence, is that everybody has their own uniquely designed space; from a quirky homework room to a formal gentlemen’s study, as well as many multi functional communal areas, the house is one for living in, not simply admiring. ”

Chris Dezille himself has enjoyed a career in interior design which extends over 25 years. The majority of his work resides in Central London, however, he is certainly no stranger to private and commercial projects throughout the UK and abroad. Ultimate perfection comes as the result of inherent creativity, professional expertise and subtle refinements: the key elements of all of his designs. Dezille continues to appear regularly in the national press and interior publications, after being recognised as one of Britain’s 100 Best Designers. Honky believe that the design process is a dialogue; an active, two-way conversation between Honky and their clients. In this way, the best possible design solution is individually created for every project. From the initial meeting, the design team strive to develop and nurture this relationship, ensuring that communication is clear, regular and understood by both parties. They deliver on time and on budget, while continuing to push design boundaries further and further with each new project. Honky’s use of bespoke wall features, soft finishes and striking lighting ensures that the desired result can be achieved without compromise, whether furnishing a private residence, development specification or show home. No exception has been made when it come to the interior of this substantial Hampstead property, completely designed by Honky. This beautiful private residence, located in prestigious Hampstead, London, was a project that commenced in 2010 and involved the major redevelopment and substantial expansion of an existing 790 sqaure metre period property, increasing in size to 1440 square metres. The original house posed a number of difficulties, and as a result, with the exception of the front facade, was completely demolished. Working with the architects, Honky were appointed as interior architects and were responsible for the entire interior detailing and finish specification in re-creating this traditional home to a truly beautiful standard. The brief was to create an elegant interior to complement the historical period features

84 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

of this refurbished £3.2 million property. A light but muted colour palette was used to contrast with fine ebony wood, while antique silver finishes and luxurious tactile fabrics simultaneously serve to enhance both the heritage and modernity of the building itself. Family was at the forefront Honky’s thinking when planning and implementing this design overall. The furniture and finishes had to compliment the grand architectural details and yet still feel like a family home. While complementing the classical, Honky were skillfully careful to ensure the design was family focused, allowing a growing family to move freely between areas, and not be constricted by design features that could date as time passes. This is particularly highlighted on the basement floor, where an impressive leisure area encompasses a large swimming pool, changing rooms and wellness spa. The pool resides next to a casual seating area and extends from the house, out into the garden with arched glass doors that create an inside/ outside ambiance around the space. The basement also houses a Cinema Room with ample cloud-like seating, where a truly beautiful Agate wall punctuates the plush bar area, punctuating practical design with a considered mix of luxury. A notable and very favourable key feature of this residence, is that everybody has their own uniquely designed space; from a quirky homework room to a formal gentlemen’s study, as well as many multi functional communal areas, the house is one for living in, not simply admiring. The gentlemen’s study is definitely a favourite aspect of this project with its key features really standing out in the design. Honky designed and commissioned a large bespoke library wall with built in bar for entertaining and a hideaway. Closed storage was integrated into the unit and the doors, which were panelled in differing matt metals, created a decadent Art Deco feature. The Honky design team believe that this particular design worked so well because it perfectly complimented and tempered the architecture without losing any grandeur throughout the home. Formal dining rooms and entertaining areas offer ample space for guests and extendent family to enjoy company in lively, cohesive grandeur. These also integrate comfortably next to family orientated spaces for relaxing and for children to play in. Chris Dezille tells design et al: “Design is a massive part of my every day life both in and out of the office. It permeates my entire being, and is with me in the decisions I make, and how I view everything around me. It’s the constant sound track to my life.”

“ the team sought to reverently balance the new with the old features which had been included at the time the house was first constructed. ”

A total renovation of a listed private landmark property, this enormous, venerable house has undergone a complete metamorphosis of being. The mansion as it is now is a testament of blinding brilliance of the vision of Annette Frommer, skillfully captured by photographer Elad Gonen.

gloss marble floor in the main entrance was chosen. This also provides a cooling immediate respite from the desert heat outside. Chosen to match the colours of the house, an eye catching black and gold rug reflects the floral filigree patterns in the intricate bannister facing the entrance.

Specialising in luxury residential interiors, Israel based interior design firm Annette Frommer Interior Design Studio completely redeveloped this listed landmark property, all the while carefully considering the very strict preservation rules, prescribed by the municipality. The exterior could not be changed in the slightest. However, Annette’s skilled team worked this to their advantage by utilizing as many original features as possible and working them into the redesign. For example, the original wrought iron front doors, railings and some floor tiles were all in a good condition to be retained, and were built into the finishing design scheme. Where new features were to be carefully added, the team sought to reverently balance the new with the old features which had been included at the time the house was first constructed. A reference to era’s bygone, large doorways throughout the house are clad in stone, bringing symmetry to the rooms.

Immediately right, through an open stone clad doorway, the long family room languishes in a tranquil mist of lilac and grey, with warming gold tones scattered through the chandelier, bookcases and chic side tables. This room features subtle mouldings in high gloss finish to add a touch of elegance, as it serves as a library. Comforting, cosy seating around the large bay window, looking out to the front garden, provides the perfect place to relax and enjoy the vision of the extensive land surrounding the house.

Annette told design et al: “The owners are a young and vibrant family from New York, who acquired this nearly 100 years old landmark property in Jerusalem, wishing to have a “pied-a-terre” in the Holy City,” In this vein, the entire ground floor was developed with entertaining guests in mind: “The first floor was to be formal, to host many parties and entertain their numerous visiting guests. It also had to include a master bedroom suite and one elegant guest suite, while the ground floor had to accommodate 8 bedrooms and a big play area for their young children.” A large family could only be accommodated with expansive space; especially in one of the most important rooms in the house, an expansive kitchen. This was designed especially to accommodate a family who enjoys hosting grand, opulent parties. “We achieved the finished look by combining the use of high-end materials and meticulous workmanship throughout the house, with an elegant color scheme with touches of brass, and magnificent chandeliers accentuating the high ceilings,” explained Annette. To imbue the property with a sense of majesty immediately upon entering, a high

92 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

From this room, family and friends and wander through to the formal dining room, which is situated in the centre of the house with two further doorways leading to the kitchen. A grand glass dining table takes centre stage in this bright room, which enjoys a wash of light from the adjacent living room’s skylight and windows. The dark wood framed doorways draw the eye into a striking perspective. The only new addition that was permitted to this listed landmark was the new living room. This has been designed to be especially innovative and ultra modern looking. Standing in this room, it could be very easy to forget one is inside still; large sliding windows and doors frame the square room, creating a tranquil space out of glass. This accentuates the contrast between old and new, and allows the owners to relax in comfort inside, with all the pleasures of being outdoors too. Floor to ceiling translucent drapes provide privacy and disperse direct sunlight, allowing a resident to sit here and almost feel as if they’re inside a large, contemporary cloud. The kitchen is bright and airy, with ample space for entertaining guests, especially as there is access to a secluded sun patio and the gardens beyond via the glass side doors. High ceilings feature pendulum lighting in richly faceted crystal. The high chairs that flank one side of the centre island have a chic structured look, drawing attention to the smart and authoritative straight lines present throughout the room.

The master bedroom is cosy and inviting, featuring warm neutral tones on the walls, while the floor is a striking indigo-charcoal. A luxurious fluffy rug is placed over this to make the dramatic colour more comforting. But, the unforgettable focal point of this room is the streamlined spiral staircase leading up to the study which is fitted in the turret above this bedroom. This room as well as another guestroom are situated on the ground level, while all the other bedrooms as well as a large playroom are on the lower level. One guest suite with a small romantic porch, conceals the entrance to an en suite bathroom behind mirrored wall paneling, adding Annette’s unique brand of intrigue. An inspiring space that would not look out of place in a palace, is the master bathroom. Clad in Statuario Italian marble, it exudes confidence and power. A guest bathroom is more femininely luxurious, featuring mirrored wall paneling from halfway up the wall to the ceiling, exaggerating space and creating a magical, ethereal ambience, especially when coupled with the gold tones of the Italian marble in this room. The designer explained to design et al: “The clients were very involved during the whole process. Aesthetics and symmetry were their guidelines. I enjoyed the journey this project represented; restoring the lost beauty of a century old house, respecting its history and giving it back its lost glamour and elegance.” With over two decades of successful experience in all aspects of interior design, Annette’s Frommer Interior Design Studio has created and honed a company comprised of highly talented and qualified support staff who offer exclusive, personal and uncompromising design services for highend residences in Israel. Catering to a global clientele, the design process is bespoke to reflect her clients’ individual personalities, styles, desires and dreams. Annette’s philosophy is to create exclusive designs within the highest standards, customizing each project to reflect her discerning clients’ lifestyle aspirations, with the result of remarkable unique interiors. Her elegant style and sophistication characterizes each of her timeless projects, from initial conceptualization of the layout and interior design to its ultimate completion, resulting in a seamless journey for her clients.

Inspired by the decadent interiors of boutiques in one of the fashion capitals of the world, Milan, SuMisura’s Director Angela Lim is the creator of multiple award winning designs and concepts in Asia. At the head of the design power house that is SuMisura, Angela together with CDL, the client, and world reknowned architect Carlos OTT, after many laborious hours, brainstorming sessions and an incessant amount of coffee, the Sky Suite at One Shenton was conceived. A luxurious, contemporary living space, fashionably located in the up-market Financial District of Singapore, the Sky Suite is not the only very successful collaboration between these three esteemed creators and investors. SuMisura and CDL, the client. Between them, a 7000 square foot villa that the Suite stands within, has been designed to showcase the grandiose lifestyle of brokers and business people in this shimmering city.

“ Due to the many entrances and exits within the apartment, the designers decided that bespoke furniture with the exact dimensions must be created within this space to make sure that circulation would not be compromised. ”

The property incorporates large windows with an exceptional panoramic view of the city’s skyline and coastline; inspiring vistas for professionals to try not to be caught indulging in. The primary goal was to create a comfortable and intimate environment, with an abundance of seating and relaxing space for the client’s family. It was also especially requested that the design should allow a greater harmony between living and dining spaces. There was a key design challenge to the space, which came in the form of two structural columns that interfere with the placement of the furniture and the circulation. Due to the many entrances and exits within the apartment, the designers decided that bespoke furniture with the exact dimensions must be created within this space to make sure that circulation would not be compromised. While designing the space, a beautiful low back, turquoise dining bench was proposed, made to follow the contour of the structural column in the corner of the room. With the dining bench seamlessly wrapped around the column, it is perfectly blended with the rest of the interior and enhances the seating capacity. Across the hall is another square column with the addition of mirror cladding visually enhancing the perceived length of the sofa tucked against it. Mirror finished surfaces bring more light into the space as well as a thoroughly luxurious feel. The elongated light cove and the customized area rug in hand tufted wool bring the living and dining spaces together harmoniously, which was much to the delight of the client.

102 The Worlds Most Glamorous Homes

Within chiffon-draped floor-to-ceiling windows, the living space is businesslike in a mix of neutrals and deep plum which gives the space warmth and a distinctly cosmopolitan texture. The plush carpets are embossed with striking floral outlines, which, instead of looking sharply feminine, take on the personality of the striking, headstrong individuals who will relax and work in this space. Spotlights positioned along the top of every window ensure the space is bright and appealing, and stylish, comfortable touches like subtly patterned and toned cushions give the suite a very liveable dynamic. Strokes of aquamarine and turquoise are picked up in the dining bench, the cushions and a specially selected serving tray, cooling the plum tones. A balcony area allows guests to absorb the city scape sprawling outside, and provides a slice of respite in the sky. As a division of the Numero Uno Creative group, SuMisura was conceived in 2009, as an up market interior design firm, to be employed by the most prestigious clients, with truly other worldly notions of design. This recent flagship project serves as a sumptuous showcase for bespoke furniture and has won a silver at the HDF Luxurious Projects Asia Summit Awards 2013 under Top Luxury Residential Design. The first show apartment project in a well known residential district of Ho Chin Minh City, also known as Saigon, has also developed much interest with many top design magazines. Going from strength to strength, SuMisura have also won Asia Pacific Property Award 2012 in association with HSBC, for The Esta Project and Asia Pacific property award 2013 in association with Virgin Atlantic, for the Stellar RV, for stunning residential and show home projects. Ever refined and understated, SuMisura’s elegance is in a league of it’s own as Director Angela Lim definitively utilises her talented eye for space proportions. At One Shenton’s Sky Suite, a level of graceful and classic maturity is evident.
