Driving through Monaco a few weeks ago, I was once again impressed by the setup of Monaco Yacht Show and the scale of the event in this little principality. Post Monaco and Cannes yacht shows, we are busy considering new ideas, design directions and making predictions for the future, from an aesthetic perspective of course. Next month we will bring you what, in our opinion, is the “best of“ recent shows. In simple terms, I don’t believe that a magazine should simply report, it should predict, define and direct, and at Luxe et al we will do just that.

With this in mind, for this issue we have extended our endorsed sections; Luxe et al Recommends as always remains at the front of each publication, an important and key sector within every month, however we have also introduced Innovation & Direction as a regular news segment within each title. It’s a quick and convenient way for you to catch up on new collections and technology at a glance. Until next month Joanne

SHEDDING SOME LIGHT ON LED ILLUMINATION BY BEADLIGHT Beadlight Designs are British manufactures who focus on high quality LED reading lights using their patented ‘Beadlight Diffusion’ technology. They offer two core ranges of reading lights, flexible stem and compact reading lights. The Cirrus and Zonda reading lights were originally designed for premium commercial jet aircraft, first class and business class cabins. A beautifully machined aluminium head houses Beadlight’s patented diffusion system, providing glare-free illumination with little light spillage. The flexible arms are upholstered in the highest quality leather, which can be customised upon request. These lights also chosen by private jets, cruise liners and mega yachts, combining stylish design with engineering excellence. The Zephyr and Sirocco are compacts lights which can be recessed in to bedheads, walls or seat shells, this installation creates a flush, discreet and elegant lighting solution. The lights provide an effective defined pool of light to the required area. When the dimple is pressed, the light opens and the upper part pivots away from the surface and then ‘swivels’ from side to side, to obtain the desired reading position. The Zephyr and Sirocco Lights are popular with both the aviation and superyacht industry where space is needs to be optimised without negatively affecting the users experience. www.beadlight.com 16 Luxe et al

The Azimut Grande 35 METRI is the new flagship in Azimut Yachts’ most exclusive line, the Grande Collection. Drawing on Azimut carbon fibre technology and the expertise of Stefano Righini and Pierluigi Ausonio, who defined the concept and designed the exteriors, allows the yacht to provide unprecedented solutions for a boat of this size, representing a masterpiece of style and space. The yacht has a Wide Body with Raised Pilot House (RPH) and supremely sleek exteriors, featuring exceptionally sized full-height windows in both the bow and salon. Unique in this category is the option to add an additional sundeck (almost 30 m2) on a third level, with access from the upper deck in the stern. This solution doesn’t affect the balance of volumes and retains the model’s overall dynamism. The Azimut Grande 35 METRI delivers the best build quality in its category. The entire superstructure and hardtop are made from pure carbon fibre, which Azimut uses with great success to increase the volume of the structures, and so to offer more space and comfort, but without adding weight to the boat. With a maximum beam of 7.5 meters, the wide-body Grande 35 METRI has all the features of even bigger superyachts, like the side garage for a 5-metre tender plus a 3.25 metre jet-ski. This leaves the stern completely free for a magnificent 12 m2 beach area provided by the vast pivoting swim platform. A second surprising lounge or beach club area in the bow (30 m2, excluding the side walkways) is fitted with sofas, a sun lounging area and a hydro massage tub. The spacious deck area located in fore of the tub is in fact a platform that can be raised using an electrohydraulic mechanism to gain access to the winches and fender racks beneath. The trapezoidal bow (one of Righini’s hallmarks) provides plenty of space and further comfort throughout the area during both mooring operations and navigation. 28 Luxe et al

A LUXURY YACHT HAS VALUE IF THAT VALUE IS LONG-LASTING. IF ITS BEAUTY CAN CHALLENGE THE SEASONS. IF ITS STYLE IS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE SEA, AND NOT JUST A FASHION FOLLOWER.

The interiors of the Azimut Grande 35 METRI are designed by world renowned architect Achille Salvagni, who uses flowing lines and streamlined shapes to reinterpret various classical features from a distinctive and unmistakably contemporary point of view. The various adaptations of the design share the same guiding thread, with one matt, textured wood juxtaposed against a darker, polished variety. A series of inserts in exclusive materials such as treated brass, bronze and polished stainless steel characterize and contaminate the space, giving it authority and a sense of memory. The forms created by Salvagni shape and permeate the interiors with a system that is never banal or dictated by fleeting fashions. The interiors are serene, calm and sophisticated in their simplicity, expressing the new approach to wellbeing under the banner of calm and sophistication. They provide a neutral backdrop onto which the designer has crafted unique, specially-designed furnishings that enhance and embellish, with meticulous attention to detail. The big circular sofa in the salon on the main deck defines the dynamism and originality of this living area, underscored by the radial arrangement made up of independent components that characterize and define the space, without interfering with the minimal and serene system of walls and windows. The main deck contains the owner’s suite, which transmits the same sensation of openness and lightness, where the king size central bed becomes the focal feature around which the entire space revolves. The highpoint of the owner’s suite is the unique private balcony, which is unprecedented on a 35 metre yacht. Using a mechanism that is highly sophisticated but extremely straightforward, the section of the full-height window with a carbon fibre frame folds out, while the floor of the balcony extends from beneath the

cabin, protected by automatic pop up stanchions. The result is the Instant Balcony, with no uprights or other obstacles to interrupt and spoil the panoramic view from the owner’s suite. Below deck, the layout includes four guest cabins (two VIP cabins with double beds and two with twin beds), with access from a large central lobby. One unique and elaborate features of the Azimut Grande 35 METRI’s interiors is the spiral staircase, which is the central connecting point for all decks, consisting of the lower deck up to the elusive pilot house. The backlit onyx steps have different finishings on their external and internal sides (white lacquer and mother of pearl respectively), as if to confirm just how exclusive the design is. In the bow, a space that is completely separate from the guest’s quarters, lies the necessities for the six members of crew consist of a crew mess, four cabins and four bathrooms. No effort has been spared to make the Grande 35 METRI a paradigm of comfort. Special care has been taken over noise reduction, with the use of elastic mountings for the propulsion system transmission and the introduction of modal analysis into the design process. This technique, borrowed from the aerospace industry, is used to study and predict the potential stresses and vibrations to which the surfaces will be subjected, allowing the structures to be planned in such a way as to reduce them to a minimum for excellent acoustic comfort. “A luxury yacht has value if that value is long-lasting. If its beauty can challenge the seasons. If its style is a source of inspiration for those who are passionate about the sea, and not just a fashion follower” renowned architect Achille Salvagni reflects.

A STATEMENT OF INDIVIDUALITY AND CREATIVITY Baltic Yachts Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI

Luxe et al 35

The biggest carbon fibre custom-built sloop in the world was launched recently by Baltic Yachts following a complex build programme of precision engineering and weight monitoring taking carbon composite superyacht building to a new level of accuracy. This is the second largest yacht Baltic Yachts has built in its 44-year history and is a perfect example of the company’s ability to innovate on a large scale using their in-depth skills in composite construction. The engineering required for the hull openings alone was highly complex and was achieved in conjunction with Gurit whose specialist knowledge helped Baltic Yachts build this complex structure. Intended primarily for world cruising, this spectacular, silver-hulled 53.34m/175ft yacht blends the past with the present, featuring a straight stem and counter stern above the water and a torpedo-style lifting bulb keel beneath it. Two topsides openings requiring highly specialised engineering forms a balcony for the owner’s suite and side entry to the main lobby. The project brought together the same design team responsible for Pink Gin V, benefitting from the performance pedigree of naval architects judel/vrolijk & co. and the inventiveness of Design Unlimited for the interior and cockpit ergonomics. Design Unlimited’s extraordinary treatment above and below decks sets Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI apart. For Mark Tucker and his team at Design Unlimited the yacht presented an exciting challenge, paying specific attention to partnering the exterior deck spaces with the interior. The result is a seamless transition, perfectly attuned to the al fresco lifestyle of superyacht ownership.

36 Luxe et al

PINK GIN VI IS NOT JUST A SUPERYACHT, SHE IS A STATEMENT OF INDIVIDUALITY AND CREATIVITY.

In a bespoke yacht like Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI, getting design detail right at an early stage is paramount, so 1:1 mockups of various parts of the yacht were built on site before the real thing was manufactured. The owner’s cabin, the hull doors or balcony openings and the large cockpit areas were mocked up so that the owner could walk in, sit down and try everything for size. The entire accommodation was built outside the yacht in modules, many of them before the hull was complete, ensuring a faster and more accurate standard of build. Mark Tucker explains that “it’s been a long journey that has pushed the boundaries of design to create a tactile interior that unites international art, fashion and experience.” Living al fresco is no longer restricted to being on deck. At the touch of a button Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI’s owner can access the fresh air and sea as a panel in the topsides is hydraulically opened to create the ultimate picture window and a personal bathing platform, literally adding a new dimension to the owner’s suite, an ultimate picture window. A similar arrangement exists on the port side of the main saloon, providing a large entry lobby leading to the saloon forward or the large galley aft. There are effectively three cockpits with chandelier illumination. The aft cockpit which is comprised of a large sunbathing and relaxation area with a companionway to the aft accommodation; the steering cockpit has twin wheels with excellent sightlines to the sail plan, including headsail tell-tales and is equipped with a 5m wide control and monitoring ‘dashboard’ with chart plotter, alarm

screens, sail and machinery controls; the forward cockpit comprises a large dining area which can be illuminated by two 1m high chandeliers suspended from the boom. These were designed collaboratively between the interior designer, Design Unlimited, and the owner. The new yacht will have an interior in which texture and surface treatment will play a large part in the design. Materials will be selected specially and used to produce a striking interior contrasted with an elegance and sense of comfort ideal for relaxing during long world cruising passages. One of the more intricate pieces of engineering is the stern bathing platform and stairway which folds out from the transom to form an easy transition from deck to sea level, simply twelve steps down. A bathing ladder, shower, lighting and guard-wires all fold back into the transom leaving it perfectly flush while underway. In comparison to other yachts this size, the only way to gain access aboard is to utilize a side ladder from the deck to the accommodation quarters however, Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI have reviewed this design aspect and created an access point directly through the hull and maintained one level. The doors allow this alteration and their design and measurements in some way dictate the shape and size of the yacht in terms of freeboard. The dictated appearance of the yacht was to design a straight stem and counter combine well and the line of the deck and superstructure is based on Pink Gin V. “The new yacht is much more than an evolution of the previous Pink Gin - she’s a revolution in design” Mark Tucker claims.

INNOVATION AND DIRECTION LED LIGHTING SHINES INTO ANOTHER SPECTRUM BEADLIGHT

Beadlight have been working on a new range of LED Ambient lights over the past 8 months. The company have decided to expand their offering of products to give their customers increased options and their RGBW technology. There is a lot of synergy between reading and ambient lights, with the expertise, knowledge and design flair it creates a stunning range of products. At Beadlight the focus has always been maintained on the design elegance of their products and are passionate about creating lights that help designers enhance the compositions rather than just being purely functional. They have a patent for the ‘Beadlight Diffusion’ technology, this is used in their lights to ensure the LEDs are diffused effectively creating the ultimate light to read by. The development in the efficiency of the LED’s enable us to create smaller more compact circuits. All of our newest reading light designs; Stellar, Sirocco M and Mono CS, have been designed to ensure the overall depth of the light is kept to a minimum. This allows them to be installed into thinner panels. Beadlight have also been working on miniaturing mechanisms, optimising circuits and light cones. As with all aviation/yacht design all space available needs to maximised as far as possible. The Stellar and Sirocco M were launched in 2016 with depths of 20mm and 30mm respectively, whilst their newest reading light, Mono CS, has an astounding depth of just 11.5mm.

REBUILD & RESTRUCTURE MODESTY YACHT CARPENTRY

Modesty Yacht Carpentry was formed in 1999 as a general yacht carpentry company. Following the destruction of their premises in 2008 by a tornado, they took the opportunity to rebuild and restructure their ethos and workshops. In addition to building a secondary floor, giving them over 1500 m2 of workshop and office space, they also modernised their machinery and have perfected a revolutionary system for producing pre-fabricated decks. In 2014, three separate departments were born: Modesty Interiors focusing on interiors of luxury yachts, Modesty Yacht Carpentry specialising in teak and technical flooring and Modesty Wrap who carries out the vinyl wrapping. Modesty Group has developed as the most important yacht carpentry and design company in the industry and has now opened a new workshop in Barcelona to offer 40 Luxe et al

their complete services further afield. Having invested heavily in the most sophisticated equipment Modesty is perfectly suited to service the refit industry whereby is fabricated off-site relying on precise measurements resulting in a seamless installation process. All aspects of the construction are carried out under controlled conditions and all stages of bonding are carried out using modern vacuum techniques. Another great advantage of Modesty’s deck construction is that all the stages of measuring and design are carried out in-house given them a far greater control over the end result. All aspects of the design, construction, varnishing and upholstery are carried out under one roof leading to a smooth troublefree project.

They now aim to develop their service bases outside of Mallorca to provide more of the same uncompromising service to more of their customers. www.modesty.es

Greenpoint Technologies is a premier Business Jet Completion Centre providing turnkey VIP interior completions for private individuals, corporations and Heads-of-State. They encompass all disciplines in-house including interior design, engineering, program management, manufacturing, installation, certification and post-delivery support. The Crystal AirCruises 777-200LR is one of the world’s most spacious, luxurious private jet offering around-the-world trips to exotic locations. The goal for this project was to create a luxurious interior in line with Crystal’s established brand, designs and mission to redefine luxury travel. The design process began with an ergonomic study which translated into the floorplan layout, designed to meet Crystal’s desires and requirements. Greenpoint designers studied the design themes present on Crystal’s newest cruise ships for a consistent theme and collaborated with the Crystal design team to determine the most functional and aesthetic interior. The close collaboration between the Greenpoint and Crystal design teams resulted in a relatively quick design process. There was not a large number of iterations, but rather variations in detail and an evolution of one theme over the course of a few months. The final interior design is a direct result of Greenpoint Technologies and Crystal AirCruises’ collaborative interior design expertise, combined with validated engineering and certification. Crystal’s brand is light and bright, a more transitional design theme compared to traditional earth tones common in VIP aviation. The lighter colours, with accents of blues and teals, are modern, inviting and blend nicely with Crystal’s spirit of travel. Guests enter the aircraft at door 2LH and may veer left to enter the bar and lounge. The lounge is an expansive social area featuring a focal bar to gather around, sofas, custom coved ceilings, and dining tables for 24 guests at each sitting. LED lighting and the signature Crystal AirCruises logo. Coloured accent and wash lighting scenes can be set to enhance any ambiance, from dining to entertainment and socialising. The vision is for guests to feel the comforts of a hotel with a main lounge to eat, mingle, work or relax. The interior features high-end fabrics and materials including quilted leather for seating, soft mohair on the sofas as well as a mix of reflective, shimmer materials and highly durable, stainresistant whites, which make the space feel bigger and brighter. As guests move aft to their seats, they will notice hand tufted carpet with a soft, plush feel and vibrant design, extra-wide aisles and a ceiling modified for extra height and space. Passenger seating is customised for supreme comfort, featuring luxury lie-flat seats arranged in a staggered 2x2x2 configuration to accommodate guests travelling in pairs. Custom Welsh handcrafted leather sleepers provide optimum comfort in both lie-flat and upright seat positions. Each seat features customised privacy surrounds, a fourway adjustable headrest, individual storage ottomans and personal in-flight entertainment systems with large 24” high definition monitors. Annika Wicklund, Greenpoint Design Director explains, “From the beginning, Crystal AirCruises embedded the vision of providing the ultimate experience and luxury of travel for its guests. We teamed closely with Crystal AirCruises’ design team to understand their ship designs and brand value, and while pulling similarities we embraced the company’s unique experience in flight. I believe guests will enter and feel excitement, refinement and ultimate care”. Bathrooms throughout the interior have been customised to feel residential and modern, with stained grey veneer oak cabinetry, large mirrors, updated vanity lighting and premium lavatory fittings to ensure a refreshing journey. In the very

aft of the aircraft, the crew and chef will be busy preparing meals and pulling wine from the dedicated wine cellar, a beautiful compartment filled with crystal glass storage, wine racks and a chiller. Greenpoint’s favourite aspect of the project was the refined, residential feel that has been achieved, within such a large Boeing 777 wide-body airplane, it is truly unique. Guests will receive the comfort and stability of a wide-body, with the personal space and intimate feel of a boutique hotel. The social lounge with sofas, dining tables and stand up bar is simply unheard of in this industry. The interior urges guests to meander, visit with other guests and discover each social setting. The design offers excess space for guests to travel comfortably and relax, wander, socialise and dine. This unique interior design concept comes to life on Crystal AirCruises’ VIP Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. The aircraft is customised to the highest standards of aviation design and is a game changer for the luxury air travel industry. The strategy was to embed Crystal AirCruises’ value and culture into the interior design of the aircraft and every detail has been evaluated to fit the luxury brand. “Crystal Skye beautifully complements all things Crystal, with its exclusively styled design and custom experience she will offer guests. In all our pursuits, and particularly with Crystal Skye, creative collaboration has been an integral part of success. It has been wonderful to work with the experts at Greenpoint to conceive and create this aircraft’s exquisite interior design, as their team made our visions an astounding reality. WOODWORKING DETAILS, COLOURS AND MATERIALS HAVE ALL BEEN SELECTED TOGETHER WITH THE OWNERS.

The new Swan 95 LOT99 is a versatile, high performance yacht which combines superior cruising capabilities with the inimitable style and quality Nautor’s Swan is renowned for. Cutting-edge hull lines in elegant forms, sporting luxury and timeless class, such as only Frers and Nautor together know how. The Swan 95 LOT99 features the semi raised saloon allowing panoramic views outside that has been a distinctive trait of the latest fast cruisers from Nautor. With its protected cockpit, ample space for dining and entertaining, Nautor’s hallmark refined lines and voluminous interior, this yacht is well suited to extended cruising. Swan 95 LOT99 was designed for experienced Swan owners and both were involved in the design of the interior. The brief was to create a yacht interior with the comfort of a home, yet seaworthy. Woodworking details, colours and materials have all been selected together with the owners to ensure a harmonious Swan interior; modern yet timeless. The hull and deck of the Swan 95 are built from a female mould using full carbon sandwich construction for maximum stiffness, yet minimal weight. The Swan 95 offers a generously proportioned interior with stylish accommodations: a luxurious main saloon with unparalleled views, a spacious and well-equipped galley and a spacious dedicated navigation area. The Owner stateroom is positioned aft. There are three guest cabins that sleep two and two crew cabins. Each guest cabin is en-suite. The engine room is positioned full beam under the main saloon for optimum onboard logistics and operation. The interior of LOT99 displays all the typical details that Swan yachts are known for but also introduces new elements and features of class-leading interior design. The recognizable laminated rounded profile on corners of 64 Luxe et al

bulkheads and furniture shows Nautor´s care in providing an ergonomic and comfortable environment inside the yacht when on passage. The centre cockpit offers plenty of shelter for guest relaxation and with two extendable cockpit tables, this flexible area can be set up for sunbathing, a sumptuous alfresco dinner or, with tables and cushions removed, as a working pit for sails when racing. Separate from the guest cockpit, the aft sailing cockpit is designed for efficient handling of the yacht with all functions within reach. The ship’s control and monitoring system is also wired into the navigation screens at the pedestals enabling the helmsman to review key systems onboard (fuel, water, lights, generators, alarms and so on). For perfect access to the water the hydraulically operated bathing platform is easily deployed with automatically extending steps down to the platform. The platform also serves as the launching area for the RIB which stows in the spacious tender garage. The interior joinery, including the floorboards, is all hand-crafted in European oak tinted with a special colour inspired by the water buffalo leather featured on many components. This delicate leather colour is named “Tundra Titanium” - grey with a hint of green and is definitely a first for Nautor. The leathers and joinery complement each other perfectly with the wood grain felt through the satin varnish finish and the leather allowed to age over time and develop a beautiful patina. The overall material palette is muted with soft furnishings in natural colours together with white padded headboards. Special attention has been paid to the lighting with consultancy from Lighting Design International. Pre-programmed lighting scenarios in each cabin are provided with just the push of a button. Entering the semi-raised saloon, you are welcomed by an embracing space, inviting you to spend time onboard and enjoy life at sea. Port side of the saloon is a dedicated dining area with U-shaped sofa upholstered in a light herrringbone Loro Piana fabric. The table can be lowered and cushions added to create a large relaxing area. A TV on the aft bulkhead and top quality integrated sound system provide diverting entertainment when guests wish to wind down below deck. To starboard, an L-shaped sofa upholstered in the same herringbone fabric creates a lounge area where the convertible coffee table transforms into an ottoman or can feature a leather upholstered tray. A navigation station

is also located to starboard, featuring a leather upholstered instrument panel. The central feature of the saloon is the lifting keel trunk upholstered in full grain water buffalo leather with matching stitching. Her modern, yet timeless interior was developed in collaboration with the experienced owners, who selected a harmonious blend of woodwork, colours and materials. The general arrangement places the owner´s cabin aft using the wide hull shape to create a beautiful full-beam stateroom with centerline berth, lounge sofa to starboard and desk on port. A private deck companionway is also a key feature. There are leather upholstered niches on the forward bulkhead providing symmetrical placement for TV and artwork. Indirect illumination enhances the white panelling outboard, where powered wooden venetian blinds can be lowered to change the ambience and reduce the natural light from the large hull windows, through which beautiful outboard vistas can be enjoyed. Two twin guest cabins are located aft amidships and a third guest cabin with queen size berth is located forward of the saloon. The foreship is dedicated to crew and services, a large galley with a bar style crew mess with natural light from the hull window becomes another social area. Accommodation for four crew members is placed forward of the galley where also the crew companionway is located. En-suite bathrooms are furnished with the same wood and colour scheme as rest of the cabins to ensure a uniform and polished look throughout the yacht. The sinks are custom moulded in Corian and faucets and shower fittings are from timeless Vola collections. Bathroom cabin doors are semi-transparent with wooden battens revealing a hint of light from the bathrooms. Put simply, the new Swan 95 is a winning formula for the renowned Nautor’s Swan shipyard, boasting high performance capabilities of competitive racing yachts as well as offering spacious and luxurious interiors for comfortable and extended blue-water cruising passages. Exterior styling and naval architecture are courtesy of long-time Swan collaborator Germán Frers who recalls “Swans are very special. They are special because of the way they are built, the way they are designed, the people that sail them. It is a way of living, it is way of sailing”.

The model S501 is the ultimate concept of a 50 metres length yacht: perfect habitability, best luxury comfort and high performance within the 500 gross tonnage, in order to assure you the great advantage of an easy management. Qualities that make Tankoa S501 the partner of dreams. The graceful and stylish finish of the M/Y Vertige allows her temperament to flow between a relaxing, classic and semidisplacement rendition or succumb to a powerful and reckless expedition. The concept and exterior design of the M/Y Vertige was completed by Francesco Paszkowski along with the interior design in cooperation with Margherita Casprini. Tankoa S501 Vertige represents the quintessence of the result between a highquality builder and a marketing and sales organization that is in daily contact with yacht Owners, Captains and Surveyors. Tankoa’s management team worked in close collaboration with Paszkowski to design the project and fulfil the set goals. Their intentions were to achieve a perfectly balanced, fluid and timeless design that will not look like what is currently offered on the market. Through this they have ensured perfect circulation flows for owners and guests, providing them with the possibility to move from, deck to deck and from the inside and outside area without interfering with the working crew, while at the same time allowing the crew total freedom of movement to carry on with their tasks. They have provided a 499- gross ton package for the owner and amenities and features commonly found on much larger yachts. The choice of Francesco Paszkowski was a natural fit considering the long lasting relationship between the star designer and Tankoa’s executives. His mission was clear: to design a breath-taking yacht that would allow the integration of all modern equipment and amenities while maximizing guest and owner space while staying at 499 GT. Most clients are concerned about silence and running comfort of the yacht, for

82 Luxe et al

this reason, S501 has been designed with a modified plumb bow, a wide hard chine and high free board to minimize spray when at speed to allow the enjoyment of the sea. To ensure the enjoyment the Tankoa S501 is equipped with hydraulic lateral foldout terraces on the aft deck, safety-glass balconies aft, sliding side windows in the dining room, foldout balconies in the master cabin, and a panoramic view of the sea from wherever owners or guests may be seated. The S501 hull is a six cabin yacht which includes a main deck full beam owner and VIP suite, as well as two VIP and two guest cabins on the lower deck, gym and home cinema on the upper deck, a 7 metre tender garage, two jet skis and rescue tender forward. Other amenities include floor to ceiling windows, foldout hydraulic terraces in the owners’ suite and on the aft deck increasing the already considerable available space. Allowing permanent visual contact with the sea was one of the other tasks assigned to Francesco Paszkowski’s design team. Interiors, as per client’s request, were designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design Studio in cooperation with Margherita Casprini and reflect a “modern but warm” atmosphere. By including these features it has resulted in being one of the most beautiful 50 metre yacht ever build under 500 GRT. The level and accuracy of detailing, both inside and outside, is in line with what everyone usually expects to find onboard much larger yachts. The Tankoa Vertige S501 is built entirely in aluminium light alloy 5083. Construction has been carefully followed by the project manager and builder engineer Albert McIlroy, the owner’s representative. Albert has been responsible for supervising construction of a number of yachts worldwide and mainly in Northern Europe. McIlroy recently declared - “With S501, Tankoa Yachts has greatly improved their time schedule management and operation processes and they truly have a teutonic

approach that often leaves me speechless for an Italian builder. I can say, after having supervised the construction of many yachts worldwide, not only the work pace and productivity at Tankoa are superior but it is also probably the first time I see the production schedule fully respected without altering the incredible flexibility that Tankoa is becoming known for.” The above mention factor is truly a plus as the Tankoa organization and business plan, calling for only-the- best subcontractors and suppliers, comes within a package offering typical Italian styling and flexibility at a more competitive price point than our northern European colleagues. This model, S501, while still under the 500 GRT mark, offers spectacular layout and amenities. The upper deck is an area of entertainment and socialising. Here Francesco Paszkowski has chosen a dining table fit for 14 guests and a wrap-around sofa for up to 20 people with a foldable TV screen. On the main deck the owner’s and master’s suites are situated maintaining a neutral palate, the owner’s suite is equipped with two lateral foldout terraces. The main salon has been installed with floor to ceiling windows with cut down bulwarks providing an uninterrupted view of the sea and surroundings. The aft deck is equipped with an oversized sun pad, a reversed deck salon looking aft and a lateral three-metrelong foldout terrace to keep guest in contact with the sea. Beneath this, the two VIP and two guest cabins on the lower deck as well as a vast aft deck and fly bridge. Beneath the decks a 7 metre tender garage is situated providing ample room to store two jet skis as well as another service tender forward. Within the transom area of the yacht there is a gym and beach club. The interior of the S501 M/Y Vertige is a prime example of simplistic and minimal luxury, it doesn’t matter where the destination is, there is no doubt that those onboard won’t feel very much at home.

THIS YACHT IS AN IMPORTANT LANDMARK IN TURQUOISE YACHTS EVOLUTION.

Turquoise, in collaboration with H2 Yacht Design, created Razan to be a thoroughly unique first -class custom yacht. She has a handsome clean profile where the successive cantilevered decks create a visual floating sensation. Juxtaposed with a contemporary interior, the entire yacht feels both modern and timeless. Much effort went into creating multi-functional and versatile space for all the amenities and luxury one would ordinarily find on much larger superyacht. Razan sets herself apart by relishing in lavish outdoor areas, five guest cabins – all with Pullman berths, along with a vast beach club. With a draught of only 2.6 metres and a 4,200 nautical mile range, she will be able to explore widely — and glide into bays not deep enough for larger boats. “The interior aesthetic reveals subtle decorative detailing layered upon a minimalist backdrop,” Karabeyoglu added. “This sleek contemporary look combines a predominantly pale palette with touches of rich dark timbers, specialist finishes and elegant polished stainless steel detailing.” Lusting over a complete face lift for Razan, H2 decided to adopt an almost clean slate by dismissing the original drawings for the yacht. The designers removed the original fashion plates to install cantilevered decks that established a floating appearance. Windows were an initial focus on Razan at the beginning stages of the project. “It was important to the owners that they had openness and a connection with the outside world,” says Bermudez, “so we enlarged the exterior windows to their maximum dimensions.” The layout of Razan revolves around a central spiral staircase encased in lightly veined Turkish marble. The luxurious fabrication doesn’t end there, the banisters are dressed in softly grained creamy Italian leather from Foglizzo, the intelligently devised lighting captures attention and encourages the eye upwards. Breaking off from this shimmering axis on the bridge deck, the upper saloon has been constructed to meet the needs

94 Luxe et al

of the younger guests. The full-beam space has been designed to focus on relaxation and lounging. Deep leather sofa are situated along the exterior walls together with stretched stools. The views and natural lighting are maintained a priority here, ensuring seat backs are kept low and the light flooring compliments the breezy European atmosphere of the colour palette. The colours of the sea are invited inside through splashes of turquoise found in the Hermès cushions which are scattered generously. Dayheads are hidden near the lobby ensuring easy access from both saloons which are clad in pearly Sicis mosaics. Floors are threaded with seams of glinting steel throughout the saloon and chic dining area as well as being interspersed with pale and dark contrasting wood. Recess ceilings have been installed in this area and other larger spaces. Undulations on these ceiling panels have been finished with a high gloss to mimic the surface of the sea maintaining the connection with the sea throughout the entire experience onboard. The deep-seated upholstered furniture contributes to a relaxed and casual feel but with the addition of the circular tiered glass chandelier by Preciosa Lighting, it adds a hint of elegance. Below the chandelier, in perfect balance, is a low circular table with stools in tessellated leather that stores neatly away. Edge-lit églomisé glass panels, providing an antique mirror effect, reflect the chandelier’s illumination. In the journey to provide more light, the designers chose to enlarge the saloon windows by widening them, each were framed by black veined palissandro wood veneer. “We lowered the bulwarks on the main deck so you would have full light entering Razan’s main saloon,” says Yurdakul. This also allows for uninterrupted views without the limitation of the previous shallow window fittings. To maintain distinction, the dark wood frames of the windows were contrasted with the leather panels edged with mother-of-pearl which cladded other walls. Located discreetly off the main saloon but near enough to the marble table is a vast pantry, convenient

and ideal for hosting social events. One of Razan’s main features is the fullbeam owner’s suite situated past the central atrium and before the main saloon. Glamourous Swarovski detailing on the ceiling as well as ‘crystal rock’ door panels create the concept of a private enclave, enabling the owners can glance out over the seascape through the full height windows. This suite is complimented by a full-beam bathroom which acquired a spacious walkin steam shower, the room is completed with crisp white marble with a blue crystal feature wall as well as freestanding pedestal basins out of white onyx. The leather covered door handles are handmade by Joseph Giles within the main saloon. The boutique feel is then carried out with a free standing angled screen which is then framed by a Moore & Giles metallic leather headboard.“These strong architectural elements at both ends of the owner’s cabin are covered in a metallic Armani/ Casa wall covering, which reflects the light beautifully and adds to the sense of quality that you expect from an owner’s suite,” says Bermudez. Bulkheads are covered in a combination of pale Tanganika tabu veneer with polished stainless steel strips and white leather. The same design and styling flows to four additional guest cabins on Razan’s lower deck below, each with its own spacious ensuite. “The two VIP cabins amidships have beds that point outboard to the windows, which provides a more spacious arrangement,” Bermudez says. The VIP cabins are beautifully highlighted with a vibrant coral colour scheme, while the slightly more petite cabins forward carry a blue theme. A combination of Edelman and Foglizzo leathers have been used throughout Razan, alongside both Turkish and Italian marbles and the softest Turkish carpets. “She’s certainly going to make an impact,” CEO Mehmet Karabeyoglu reports, confirming the joyful news that Turquoise Yachts is ‘back on the map’. Razan marks the beginning of the new Turquoise lifestyle.

A TRULY REMARKABLE REBIRTH Pendennis Aquila

Luxe et al 99

Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, Cornwall has re-delivered the 85.6m motor yacht AQUILA, after an extensive refit programme which took exactly one year to complete. AQUILA is the largest yacht to be refitted in the UK, and the scope of the work undertaken included an impressive revitalisation of all five deck levels. Redman Whiteley Dixon (RWD) and Susan Young Interiors were commissioned to evaluate the existing room and exterior layouts to reformulate spaces and to improve flow between each area of the yacht. Significant enhancements included reconfiguring the owner’s suite along with the addition of a 60m2 private deck area, repositioning the jacuzzi to the forward sun deck, and integrating a cinema into the Main Salon. The time and vast refurbishment of the project is astonishing and seemingly herculean. “No single job was that tricky,” says Stephen Hills, project director at Pendennis, who managed the Aquila refit programme, somewhat surprisingly. “The challenge of this project has been the volume of the changes in the timeframe that was set.” Tony Dixon, Director at RWD, explains the styling approach: “We selected a mix of dark wood finishes, pale leather panels with nickel trim and many new special surface materials all interplaying together to offer subtle style variations throughout the interior.” This was achieved by using a collaborative mix of glass and marble, with predominantly grey and petrol blue tones complemented by almost black eucalyptus wood veneers, framed by stainless steel and completed with exotic finishes such as tobacco leaf panels. Dramatic features are used to enhance the feel, including a 11.2m handmade Czech glass chandelier which cascades through four deck levels in the central stairwell comprising of over 850 individual hand-blown glass pieces creating shards of light across the white marble floor. Other key details, such as the patterning of the parquet wood floor that mirrors the ceiling detail in the owner’s Salon, are 100 Luxe et al

complemented by bespoke furniture and meticulous atmospheric lighting design. The 85.6m motor yacht offers an abundance of deck space divided into sections to cater for different occasions. The new forward sun deck offers a large jacuzzi, day bar and treatment room. All four decks aft offer an abundance of space for al fresco dining, relaxing and socialising. AQUILA also boasts a dedicated party deck complete with DJ booth, AV system, smoke machine and light show. The new configuration has removed the pool and placed it on the forward section of the deck. The now larger aft deck has a light-up bar, central seating area and loungers further back. It’s a sign of the uncompromising nature of the Aquila project that the old step was removed and a new one added, just a couple of feet further aft, to give the upper space a little more sweep. The forward portion of the sundeck, meanwhile, places a large superyacht spa pool surrounded by sun pads at the private forward end leaving ample space for a bar and sofa. A pantry has been converted to a massage and spa room inside, too. The owner’s deck saloon, one level below, has a gentlemen’s club feel with a spectacular bar that Dixon and Young Interiors coated with tobacco leaf to give it a rust brown patina, backed with ripplefaced mirrors and metalised fabric wall surfaces by Silverlining, which also made the dining table and bubble-glass doors in Aquila’s bridge saloon. Sliding glass panels backed with a mirror-like coating were installed behind the bar to create a dramatic foil-like feature. They slide to reveal two TVs, transforming the use of the space. These panels were designed by Susan Young Interiors and fabricated by Peter David Studio. Inside, a cool, calm and contemporary interior creates an aura of tranquillity. Icy silvers, dark browns peppered with nickel and clean whites are accented with patterned soft furnishings and tasteful lighting.

WE SELECTED A MIX OF DARK WOOD FINISHES, PALE LEATHER PANELS WITH NICKEL TRIM AND MANY NEW SPECIAL SURFACE MATERIALS ALL INTERPLAYING TOGETHER TO OFFER SUBTLE STYLE VARIATIONS THROUGHOUT THE INTERIOR.

Other new features include a cinema room, where an enormous 85-inch screen pulls focus. “The inside of the cinema has its own false floor,” says Hills, “with a resiliently mounted deck, so that it’s independent from the steel structure underneath it and you reduce structuralborne vibration into the cinema. And when the cinema is in full blast, there is as little as possible transmission of the noise out of the cinema.” On top of this there are heavy doors with acoustic seals and special insulation in the bulkheads. The 98-inch widescreen has a professional grade 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos surround system of seven inwall Genelec speakers and four overhead speakers, plus two Artcoustic subwoofers with powerful 1kW amplification, with a Crestron control system. The owner’s deck has been completely remodelled which now offer access to a 60-square metre private deck overlooking the bow. It also offers in addition to the large suite, a massage room, hair salon, his and hers ensuite and study. A further seven cabins offer accommodation for 12 guests. The yacht owns an exclusive member’s club vibe with a gym, two massage rooms and an impressive new bar called ‘the London Bar’. Forward on the main deck, new flooring, hardware and en-suite bathrooms have been upgraded throughout the guest cabins on Aquila. Even where there are remnants of the older boat, the way they have been used is impressive. The floral carpet has gone for a silky grey, and curling wrought ironwork replaced with stainless steel bars, the wooden base and handrail stained a far deeper tone and the central chandelier by Czech company Preciosa is, as Hills puts it, “quite a piece of engineering in its own right”. Mike Carr, Joint Managing Director of Pendennis, reports the shipyard’s success: “we believe that this project has set a new benchmark for large yacht refit programmes.”
