This issue we are taking a closer look from a design perspective at new launches from LĂźrssen, Benetti, CMB Yachts, Oceanco and Perini Navi. All yachts selected this month have very different interior schemes ranging from clean lines to more classically-styled projects, and from pareddown simplicity to full on glamour. Also, in the aviation sector, we take a look at the Bombardier Global Express from Duncan Aviation and Concept Jet HX1 from Peugeot Design Lab. It is exciting to see such a variation in scheme and style, indicating exciting times in the design side of the yacht and aviation industries; these are changing times and design is certainly moving forward. If I am completely honest I think there is a long way to go yet, but I am encouraged by the design names working in this sector - both those diversifying in recent years and those who have been established for many years.

As the only title in this sector to specialise and focus on the design element, we remain keen to report on changes, developments and design directions, however more than this we intend, over the next twelve months, to work in line with our other design titles and predict, influence and lead - not merely report. We are currently busy here working on our annual hard back publication, now an iconic title it it’s own right, The World’s Leading Design Names 2018 - Yacht & Aviation Issue. This publication once looked at design across all sectors from residential, to yacht, aviation and commercial design, but due to expansion we have for 2018 created a second issue to accompany our design et al issue that focuses solely on the work of yacht and aviation designers. Until next month Best regards Joanne

REIGNITING MAGNETIC CLOSURES BY NANZ The ‘High Seas’ provides a host of hardware challenges posed by sea air and the motion of a vessel at sea. NANZ has faced these challenges by designing a range of products that are particularly appropriate for yachts. These patented products combine non-ferrous brass with stainless steel components. Rare earth magnets are incorporated into the 7800 Series Locks and Latches, which allow doors and cabinets to latch immediately and securely, without being pushed into place. Winch Design has been responsible for both the stunning exterior and the harmonious interior design. Tasked with a complex assignment to keep the design in line with the Passenger Yacht Code, they have given the yacht a sleek and perfectly balanced signature, complemented by a traditional but fresh interior with an American classic twist. As is always evident within any project of this size and significance, it is vital to have a cohesive team working together and the strong synergy between the Winch design team and the Lurssen project team was essential to the successful outcome of the vessel. Needless to say, the joint efforts of both a technically strong and experienced engineering force along with a creative and inspirational design, Areti is a resounding success. At 85 metres and with an enormous beam of almost 15 metres, Areti is an extremely voluminous yacht. A combination of straight grain and figured Makore timber are a basis for the traditional styling and enhance the luxurious atmosphere that is created by the hand-embroidered silks of the soft furnishings and the brushed, antiqued brass ironmongery. On stepping aboard the yacht to the main deck aft, what better welcome than a granite reception bar flanked by semicustom armchair-style, teak barstools. Via huge, double glass doors into the lounge and dining, there is instant release of stress from the outside world - this is a relaxing space. Neutral sofas and oversized chaise lounges give ample seating. A walnut Steinway Boston piano rests portside and should the guests not hold a pianist among them, no matter, this state-of-the-art piano disc IQ premium system is capable of playing itself. The opulent lounge divides from the dining area with a central Credenza and on the far side, lies a book-matched Makore, dining table, handmade in the UK, that would stand proud at any feast. Areti has an extensive, private master suite and eight spacious guest suites. Two suites can be found forward on the main deck, two VIPs are on the owner’s deck and the remaining four suites are located on the lower deck. Each guest suite is decorated neutrally as per the rest

30 Luxe et al

of the yacht, but with an accent colour portrayed in the scatter cushions, handsewn curtains and other soft furnishings: emerald, dandelion, camino, blue, crimson, indigo, lilac and coral. Each suite is convertible and can be used as a twin or double berth.

Forward of this area is the certified Helilanding area, providing easy transfers to and from the yacht for the owners and their guests. This deck also leads down to the main deck via latch doors to the promenade sidewalks so guests can walk side by side instead of single file.

On the lower deck aft is the relaxation spa. The whole expanse is a wet area and displays a hand crafted rose mosaic from famous Serbian mosaic artist Andjelka Radojevic. Guests benefit from a steam room, sauna, full depth plunge pool and a hot tub, and can take advantage of the full banya experience, including the traditional accessory display of birch and eucalyptus branches, timber knives and felt hats. Not to mention the experience showers that have multitemperature, -light, -acoustic and -aroma settings to simulate a Niagara waterfall or a Caribbean storm. This tranquil area extends to the adjacent wet lounge come beach club. The flooring is oiled teak planked to blend the interior and exterior, and opens via a large transom door to the swim platform, with descending staircase into the sea which has become a popular design feature of Lurssen yachts. Another feature is the treatment room with hairdressing vanity and hidden professional hairdressing basin and a special massage chamber with heated marble massage table and Vichy shower. It really is pampering at its best.

On venturing aft on the owner’s deck, one is greeted with what is arguably one of the most beautiful areas of the yacht - a generous sky lounge, which inevitably will most likely become the most frequented area of the yacht. Giant sofas and armchairs make up the snug television area with an enormous flat screen TV, surreptitiously disguised behind a sailing scape exclusively commissioned from artist Alexander Creswell. There is an adjustable games table, adaptable for four or six players. A large bar with granite top and custom bar stools with hand-embroidered back detailing assemble to create the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail or two. Almost full beam double glass doors lead out onto the upper aft deck where a custom teak table dominates the upper aft deck and can comfortably sit 16 guests.

The spa lobby offers a trophy case like no other and was a key consideration of the client: a glass-walled storage for eight bicycles and four Segways. A tool bench and workshop with bike display above make repairs the easiest of tasks with custom made fibreglass fixings in which the bikes can hang. Brushed steel frames the glass and light floods in from the corridor. Up the staircase to the owner’s deck forward, a sliding door operates here to close it off to be completely private. Here are two VIP cabins, with Jacuzzi bath ensuites, intended for the owner’s family. His and her dressing rooms and ensuites are either side of the entrance way to the master suite, each with unique features such as his with a watch cabinet display, hidden luggage store and a large shower with a television within the in-shower mirror and hers with several handbag and shoe racks and a much larger ensuite with Jacuzzi bath. The master stateroom has 180-degree views through panoramic windows, which are bordered by madeto-measure unique curved furniture tailored to fit the arced window. Access to a private owner’s deck with a Jacuzzi spa for four, spacious sunbed, a breakfast table and small seating area is either side.

TRADITIONAL BUT FRESH INTERIOR WITH AN AMERICAN CLASSIC TWIST.

Areti, formerly known as project Sasha, was delivered in July 2017 following her effortless sea trials. This 85-metre sensation is of a similar design to the owner’s previous yachts as it bares the same subtle cream hull with white superstructure and whisper grey accents; however, possesses a much younger and sportier profile.

Serene exterior deck spaces provide numerous other calm zones where one can feel at home. Retractable awnings with customised up lighting cover each exterior area so that the space still feels warm, light and airy but can also block out the harsh midday sun. The sundeck is the pièce de résistance. This is an outstanding place to sunbathe while observing the picturesque views. An unimposing windshield keeps the area sheltered and one can see the beautiful design of what has become known as the whale tail of the yacht. Overall, Areti is a stunning feat of design and construction, a real head-turner and she is bound to be the envy of even the most discerning of superyacht owners. She represents the very latest in high-end family cruising and will be sure to bring pleasure to her owners and their guests for years to come.

WE HAVE BEEN WORKING CLOSELY WITH ROLLS-ROYCE ON A JOURNEY TOWARDS AN OPTIMISED PROPULSION SYSTEM FOR OUR NEW LINE OF MEGAYACHTS.

Equipped with an innovative Rolls Royce Azipull Carbon 65 propulsion system, Benetti’s Skyler represents state of the art in the yachting industry. With a length of 38.1m and a beam of 8.3m, built in composites and carbon in Benetti’s Viareggio shipyard, the Fast 125’ is a four deck semi-wide body yacht with a total of five cabins.

metal in the interior; be it taps, inserts or other details, is glossy nickel, a constant that adds unity to the whole. It was also very important for the owner that living aboard his yacht be a pleasant tactile experience; all materials used in the flooring and the handrails have been chosen to offer the most pleasant and luxuriously soft tactile sensations.

Skyler has a sporty exterior which was designed by Stefano Righini using an expanse of horizontal windows to accentuate the yacht’s streamlined look. A key feature is the remarkable central element in the side of the superstructure that covers the access stairway to the upper deck. The luxurious interior was designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon, based on the “Air” configuration, one of the three interior style options that Benetti offers to their Fast 125’ owners. The owner, an experienced yachtsman, requested many custom touches such as widespread use of lose furniture from famous design brands such as Glyn Peter Machin, Sutherland, Minotti and Meridiani.

The lower deck has four guest cabins, two VIPs with “super queen” sized beds, a double, and a twin cabin with a pullout Pullman bed. Tanganica frisé wood is used throughout and contrasts with ebony table tops, doors and accents. Each cabin has a different coloured leather ceiling with leather accents repeated in walls, upholstery and inserts. The colours chosen are aqua, acid green, lavender and blue. The carpeting is especially soft and is wonderful to walk on barefoot as per the owner’s brief. The lower deck layout also enjoyed major benefits from the instalment of the new propulsion system. The system’s reduced dimensions allowed for an engine room placed well aft so that more room was left for the sideopening garage with space for an almost 6m tender and two jet skis. Additionally, having the garage between the engine room and the guest area keeps the cabins better isolated and especially silent. The yacht has crew accommodations for 7 to ensure a relaxed and luxurious time aboard. The crew area is fore on the lower deck and has three double en-suite cabins and a large crew mess.

The exterior of Skyler has four distinct areas devoted to the sea and on-board living. The beach area on the lower deck has its own bar and is completely dedicated to enjoying the sea. On the upper deck astern the owner requested a very luxurious handcrafted teak dining table that is 2m in diameter and has steel and glass details. This beautiful table makes this area one of the most stunning aboard the yacht. Forward on this deck there is a lounge with a custom seating solution that is over two meters long and almost five wide. There is also an area for relaxing with two huge sun pads and a pool. The sun deck is an area entirely dedicated to relaxing. It’s equipped with a bar with Glyn Peter Machin bar tools, two L shaped sofas and a dining area with custom furniture signed by Minottii. Skyler’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to ten guests in five cabins. The interior, designed by Redman Whiteley Dixon in collaboration with Benetti’s in-house design team, is simple, contemporary and clean to leave the natural elegance of the precious natural materials used in the décor intact. The interior finishings feature glossy ebony, Thai wood and Tanganyika frisé wood. The ceilings are finished in a variety of leathers and all 38 Luxe et al

On the main deck, the saloon is especially bright and luminous thanks to a generous use of glass that lets natural light flood into the light-toned space. There is a liberating sense of space in the saloon. Here, Benetti has created a real continuity between inside and outside, thanks in part to the huge floor-to-ceiling picture windows. The Tanganyika frisé wood walls and chromed nickel inserts contrast nicely with glossy ebony table tops and details. The owners request for freestanding furniture by top international design firms is met generously here and includes Meridiani and Holly Hunt couches and poufs. The custom dining table can seat ten and was made by Dakota Jackson. The dining area wooden flooring has been specially backed with foam to make it feel soft underfoot.

The full beam owner’s cabin picks up many motifs from the main saloon such as the ultra-soft carpeting. A large dressing area with his and hers closets leads into the cabin where Minotti furniture features. Spectacular features are two opening side balconies, one port and one starboard. The opening mechanism can be operated by remote and these are lovely private spaces for a quiet breakfast or cocktail. The two bathrooms, one with a shower and the other with a bathtub, are entirely lined in onyx and feature polished nickel taps. The galley, also situated on the main deck, is an area the owner enjoys spending time and was tailor made to meet their needs with a central island and a custom marble table. Benetti has already proven its flexibility in transforming the upper deck on the Fast 125. On Skyler a gym has been created with an Octane Fitness cross-trainer and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. There is also a wellness area, a day head and the Captain’s cabin which has direct access to the wheelhouse featuring dual pilot’s seats and leather and rosewood couches. The modified arch increases the size of the upper deck windows providing a lightflooded area, with a comfortable seating area, a marble and onyx bar and a 75-inch screen. As a result, this relaxed space can easily become an onboard cinema. The owner of the yacht was heavily involved in the interior design and the layout of the exterior decks. The added weight of the desired fixtures and fittings is offset by the lightweight carbon and epoxy resin superstructure allowing uncompromised cruise performance and design. “Efficient and lightweight propulsion is key to reducing the environmental impact of a modern yacht,” said Vincenzo Poerio, Benetti CEO. “We have been working closely with RollsRoyce on a journey towards an optimised propulsion system for our new line of megayachts. The successful result of this collaboration has been confirmed: Skyler is the third unit of this series to be built and another three are under construction”. Skyler stands apart from the previous models in the Fast 125 series and is a yacht to be experienced with all the senses.

HIS PASSION FOR FINE WINES AND GOURMET COOKING BECAME AN INSPIRATION FOR THE FINAL DESIGN.

Inspired by the owner’s expectations of creating a high-end experience coupled with sleek, simple lines, Duncan Aviation Senior Designer, Mary Lee, has transformed the interior of this Bombardier Global Express from its traditional, outdated neutral environment to one of modern luxury. In order to create a truly unique experience for the owner, the design concept began by incorporating blue carbon fibre and painted cabinetry in place of traditional wood veneer. The blue carbon fibre served as the unifying element to achieve balance throughout the cabin and was the focal point of the bulkhead dividers. The certified, Duncan Aviation-designed and fabricated stainless-steel steps provide a dramatic entrance to the Global Express. In the interior, from angled touch-screen bezels to chrome inlay details, numerous custom parts were designed and manufactured by Duncan Aviation’s in-house fabrications team to meet the customer’s expectations. Blue LED-illuminated cupholders, an exclusive Duncan Aviation design, were incorporated into the drink rail working in conjunction with the ambient blue floor lighting, adding detail to the overall experience. Carrying through some of the more eye-catching details from the interior to the exterior, Lee’s one-of-a-kind, striking paint scheme is designed to be noticed. The exterior paint colours were also selected to be harmonious with the interior colour palette. Garrett Leather provided these colours for the aircraft: C600016 Chatham Custom Stratus and M800016 Mystique Custom Stratus. The sleek arched stripe scheme incorporates elements of the owner’s logo to complete the personalised image. The design was inspired by the owner’s preference for a sleek, modernised interior and a flair unique to his tastes. In order to capture his vision of a sporty yet sophisticated environment, the design concept began by incorporating blue carbon fibre and silver metallic painted cabinetry. The galley function and appearance was also a very important element to the client and his passion for fine wines and gourmet cooking became the inspiration for the final galley design. 46 Luxe et al

“The galley function and appearance were especially important to our client,” says Senior Completions Designer Mary Lee. “His passion for fine wines and gourmet cooking became an inspiration for the final design. It was important to incorporate the owner’s preference for a sleek, modern interior with a flair unique to his tastes. This was accomplished by using nontraditional finishes such as blue carbon fibre, brushed aluminium mixed with highly polished chrome, silver metallic painted cabinetry and granite,” Mary Lee tells design et al. The interior finishes are completely new from the hand-made Tai Ping carpeting, custom-tipped Garrett leather sidewalls to the arched plated inlay on the dividers. The premium carbon fiber ‘Reflections’ line was provided by composite industry specialists, Composite Envisions. Techno Aerospace, the renowned electroplating service company, also performed several custom plating treatments on the aircraft. The desire to create a sleek, streamlined interior included new drink rails, lower sidewalls, and modified main cabin PSU valance panels incorporating a silver painted trim cap and new custom chrome plated light/air vent escutcheons. The pleated cabin window shades were refurbished, and the electric controls integrated into the new CMS system. The cabin seating was upgraded to new electric assist B/E Aerospace seats with custom Townsend perforated leather, blue accent welt cord and French stitching. The cabinetry was modified throughout for better functionality and improved aesthetics including a new upper galley tower with lighted crystal display. A new mid cabin credenza with a pull-out kibitzer was added in the mid cabin for storage and additional in-flight seating. The lighted cupholders, entry step treatment, and wine cabinet are custom solutions that were designed and fabricated by Duncan Aviation. The cupholders were thought out by working very closely with their internal fabrication group to achieve the exact desired result, keeping the blue LED ring of light within the cupholder to a minimum while reducing

unwanted reflections through the selected black powder coated finish inside the cupholder. Full dimming capabilities were also integrated into the design with the new Cabin Management System. “As you walk up the Duncan Aviationdesigned stainless and neoprene entry steps, the custom blue LED illuminated wine cabinet is a stunning preview of what is to come,” says Senior Completions & Modifications Sales Rep, Tracey Boesch. B/E Aerospace LED cabin, entry, lavatory, and galley up wash and downwash lighting was installed along with blue effect floor lighting. The custom blue LED-illuminated wine cabinet is a stunning preview of the rest of the cabin and welcomes you into the contemporary interior. An exclusive step treatment for the Global Express airstair was designed and fabricated by Duncan Aviation. With stainless steel, Neoprene rubber and aluminium, this was the perfect entry to complement the modern design and sleek lines found in this aircraft. Duncan Aviation also custom designed and fabricated its Sport-style drink rails for this interior. Townsend Leather’s Classic Cowhide Sheer Mist was used on these drink rails providing the perfect luxurious finish. Duncan Aviation’s cabinet experts fabricated exquisite new and modified cabinetry throughout the interior to include custom wine storage, new upper tower and modified lower galley cabinetry, lavatory storage modifications, and a new mid cabin credenza. Luxury experts Dahlgren Duck supplied Pickard dinnerware, Baccarat crystal, Christofle flatware, Cottimaryanne custom sheets and Ogallala duvet inserts. The design works seamlessly as the use of the blue carbon fibre was integral to the overall design. It is a unique and beautiful material that was used conservatively for the ultimate effect. Complementary materials of granite, silver painted cabinetry, brushed aluminium and polished chrome in conjunction with blue LED accent lighting in the cup holders and at the floor were combined to highlight its use. The result is a beautiful integration of blue illumination throughout the entire aircraft.

BRIGHT SPACES & FUNCTIONAL DESIGNS Duncan Aviation refurbished this Falcon 900, incorporating the owner’s personality, creating an aesthetically pleasing and functional design. Black comp oak veneer with a matte finish contrasts with the light leather and subtle textures of the newly selected fabrics and carpet. All plating, fixtures and hardware were replaced. To brighten the aircraft, special LED lighting including illuminated cupholders and light lenses, both exclusive Duncan Aviation designs, were installed. +1 402.475.2611 www.DuncanAviation.aero

With its unique design innovations, Liquid Sky reflects the timeless design line of CMB Yachts, as well as being a product of a modern and sophisticated taste. Sharing the goals and projects for the second decade in terms of brand strategies, CMB Yachts Shipyard Manager & Projects Coordinator Cüneyt Okçu says: “With our young and dynamic team of 250 people and our production site of 10 thousand m2, especially with mega yachts over 40 meters, we claimed our place both in Turkey and in the global market. We are among the industry leaders in the upper

CMB Yachts, creating awarded projects in the sector since 2007, when it started production, has launched its new 47-metre miracle, Liquid Sky. The last project of CMB Yachts to embrace the open sea from its shipyard in Antalya Free Zone has charmed all sea lovers with its flawless design, production and quality of materials. Liquid Sky, which premièred in Palmarina, Bodrum in September with the previously completed 47-meter Mystic and Orient Star boats, made its first cruise to Fort Lauderdale Boat Show early November.

segment producer group. We are among the brands that are known, followed and favoured both in Turkey and in the world, especially with our quality and know-how in composite mega-yacht production. In line with our strategies, we will continue to work on projects, such as Liquid Sky, that will create excitement in the sector in future years.” Life aboard Liquid Sky has been the collaborative vision of Beril Basaran of Turkish design house Artebel Design. The accommodation and sleeping quarters made for ten is shared across the main and lower decks in a typical and traditional layout. The owner’s suite is forward of the main deck and there lies the remaining VIP and guest cabins below deck mid-ship. Forward of the guest cabin bulkhead are crew quarters for eight, while predictably the captain’s suite is attached to the bridge on the upper deck. The interior designer was Artebel Design who decorated with oak wood, bronze, corian and light tone fabrics as well as being outfitted with the latest technology. The yacht has five en-suite rooms along with a fully equipped gym, a 180-degree open sky lounge with balconies, Jacuzzi with waterfall and a beach club. Liquid Sky is privileged with immense space onboard allowing guests to grasp the feeling of being on a 70m yacht. Liquid

Sky offers plentiful space to relax, rewind and explore the world’s waters on board. Guests are spoilt for choice for places and opportunities to relax, be it the vast beach club, 28-metre-long sun deck, or the sky lounge which combines the yacht’s balconies into the space and frames spectacular views of the horizon due to the floor-to-ceiling glazing. Similarly to the rest of the fleet, which launched in 2017, the sun deck is designed for dynamic and informal entertainment, meanwhile, formal and intimate events can be hosted on the upper deck terrace or in the saloon. Liquid Sky’s exterior profile hails from the drawing boards of Espen Oeino International Design and with it, an enormous amount of design know-how. Liquid Sky is very conservative, practical and intimate, but it’s a style and design that works. It is planned that the other two projects of CMB Yachts CMB47 series, with ongoing production and details kept secret, will be delivered to the owners in 2018. However, being kept as a secret is not what makes them special. Having its interior design carried out by Beril Başaran - Artebel Design, the design of the new CMB47 series, again by Espen Oeino like Liquid Sky, further invokes curiosity and interest.

TECHNO AEROSPACE: PROVIDING AIRCRAFT INTERIOR DESIGNERS A NEW ARRAY OF OPTIONS TECHNO AEROSPACE

Techno Coatings has been known as the premier aircraft interior electroplating company for the last 37 years. Three years ago, the company rebranded from Techno Coatings to Techno Aerospace as the company successfully introduced the new capability of a wide variety of new finishes for hard surfaces in aircraft interiors. Now the company has taken another huge leap! The North Miami-based company has taken its commitment to support the creativity of aircraft interior designers to a completely new level with the acquisition of Jormac Aerospace. The company now offers full design, engineering, fabrication, testing and certification services in addition to their custom finishing capabilities. According to Juan Pablo Camargo, CEO of Techno Aerospace, the company has always searched for ways to empower designers to be more creative in the design of aircraft interiors. “We looked for inspiration in the heart of our founder, Saul Camargo, and we decided to expand our offerings with new technologies and an enhanced team”, says Camargo. This effort resulted in the introduction in 2014 of four new product lines, offering a wide variety of alternatives for the finish of all hard surfaces in the aircraft interior. “We acquired or developed extensive in-house capabilities in taking hydrographic printing, dimensional metallisation, and ceramic coatings to a level worthy of VIP aircraft”, continues Camargo. Not ending with the surfaces, the offering includes commissioned fine art, either as loose pieces or as the finish on monuments or structures in the interior. With the new acquisition of Jormac, the company is now able to provide designers with what they have always wanted…to make their dream designs possible! Techno Aerospace can now design, engineer, build, finish, test and certify monuments for aircraft interiors in a true turnkey fashion. Camargo continues, “We have always catered to designers, but now we feel we can give them options they never had before.” With companies like Techno Aerospace, it is clear the industry will see a whole new generation of aircraft interior designs”. www.technoaerospace.com

55M BAGLIETTO NEW BUILD ANNOUNCED

EDMISTON

www.edmiston.com

Edmiston is proud to announce the signing of an exciting 55m new build project from Baglietto, hull no. 10225. Designed by Francesco Paszkowski Design, this new 55m displacement vessel will be of steel and aluminium construction, using Baglietto’s proven T-Line platform. This platform method will allow a comparatively fast build process, with delivery expected to be in 2019. The yacht’s design and layout will, though, be heavily customised. Whilst paying homage to the builder’s ‘Seagull’ style, with soft and sleek lines and lowered gunwales, this project promises to deliver a highly bespoke yacht to reflect the Owner’s vision. The six-cabin interior layout will be extensively customised and, whilst specific design details are to be kept confidential, we can also confirm the inclusion of a huge beach club area and a sundeck measuring some 160m2. Marking what has been a very successful period in Baglietto’s history, CEO Michele Gavino said, “this is the third new build undertaken in the last five months, during which time we have also delivered two new vessels (the 48m ANDIAMO and the first MV19 RIDOC) and presented two new projects that will complete our much-updated range.” Luxe et al 61

IN PROFILE:

MICHAEL BRENNER DIRECTOR - F. LIST GMBH

Please tell us a little about your background (education, experience etc). After my technical education at a polytechnic in Austria I started at F/LIST as a technical draftsman. At the same time I pursued economic studies at the University of Economics in Vienna. With the combined technical and economical understanding I switched to project costing before becoming a project manager and, ultimately, Director of Controlling. During my career I have always tried to integrate technical and economic aspects for the ideal outcome of our projects. What projects have you recently completed? The most profound project we have completed in 2017 has most certainly been the acquisition of business operations of OHS Aviation Services and the subsequent foundation of F. LIST GERMANY GMBH, with 32 employees, located at the General Aviation Terminal of the Airport Berlin Schönefeld. This new subsidiary has boosted our aftermarket activities tremendously: we can now offer comprehensive cleaning and refurbishment services, and plan to expand our aftermarket activities over all of Europe in the coming months and years. What projects are you currently working on? THE major project at the moment is the internationalisation of F/LIST. Besides F/LIST GERMANY, we are establishing three other locations: F. LIST CANADA CORP. While having been established in 2007, is being expanded with its own production facility in Montréal with up to 100 employees by 2020 and will, on the one hand, provide flexible and swift customer support to existing and new customers in the region. F. LIST USA CORP. has recently been strengthened with two seasoned aviation experts as sales manager and key accounts manager. They will cultivate the US market and generate new business opportunities in the States for F/LIST – which will be covered by additional subsidiaries of F/LIST USA planned for 2018. F. LIST MIDDLE EAST FZCO in Dubai has been founded very recently and its facilities are currently being set up to provide 62 Luxe et al

refurbishment and cleaning services to customers from the entire Middle East. What do you feel, in your field of work, are the three most important qualities to adhere to/strive towards in today’s industry? Passion – even though we are going international, we will always remain a familyrun company from Austria. We adhere to the principles which have made us who we are today: a passion for craftsmanship and a passion for our employees, to always have an open ear for their problems and wishes. Innovation – in today’s fast-paced markets, innovation is crucial to remain ahead of the competition. Thanks to our strong R&D department, we are constantly producing innovative products, materials and processes and setting new standards, such as F/ LIST® HEATED STONE FLOORING, the first real stone flooring with integrated heating for business jet cabin, a Winner of the 2018 German Design Award. Reliability – to stand by one’s word and to cherish successful long-term cooperation’s, mutual appreciation and trustworthiness: these are qualities that are the basis for sustainable business relationships, which is what we strive for. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? I think an important factor is our selfperception as a family company instead of a corporation. Only when employees feel appreciated and cared for they can produce the level of quality our customers expect from F/LIST. The other factor is that we can deliver this exact quality worldwide. We develop solutions for our international customers and deliver virtually everything they need: from the sourcing of raw veneers over engineering and manufacturing to repairs, refurbishments and retrofits of entire cabins. All of this is covered in-house to guarantee consistent quality and timeliness.

make these natural materials fit for aviation, for instance in terms of flammability. Since we started out in 1950 as a small joinery, wood is still the main element in our products. But we have earned critical acclaim for our successful experiments with stone: our revolutionary thin stone technology allows the application of real stone on counterand tabletops and other surfaces. And, as mentioned before, German Design Award Winner F/LIST® HEATED STONE FLOORING is the first real stone flooring with integrated heating for business jet cabins. What current design trends have you identified and do you have any predictions for upcoming design directions? In a certain sense we do not only identify trends, we even set them: our revolutionary hard floorings – F/LIST® WOOD, STONE and LEATHER FLOORING – are more successful than ever and have become serious competition to conventional carpet or vinyl floorings. One trend we see as well is the demand for more seamless integration of onboard systems, e. g. IFE/CMS, into the cabin furnishings, which means basically smoothly integrated screens or slots for peripheral devices. What do you feel are the biggest challenges the aviation sector will have to face in the future? Faster and further – aviation always pushes the limits when it comes to range and speed of new aircraft. At the same time environmental consciousness and a shift towards electrical technologies raise the question ofEXCEPTIONAL the sustainability of these developments. The effortsI N towards new COMPETENCE MATERIALS technologies for the will have to be LEADS TOfuture EXCEPTIONAL increased if the aviation industry is meant to INTERIOR continue to grow in the long run.

Do you have any favourite products or materials you prefer to work with? Our core competences are the natural materials wood, stone and leather. Oceanco’s 110m/361ft Jubilee, delivered in July 2017, has already made quite an impact on the luxury yachting world. During her build, she generated a tremendous amount of anticipation due to her size. When revealed to the world, her particularly striking exterior profile created by Lobanov Design, and distinguished interior by Sorgiovanni Designs created a universal buzz. Displacing over 4,500 gross tons, with 16.4m/54ft beam, this formidable yacht still maintains a noble profile from bow to stern. Her progressively longer horizontal blue lines make Jubilee look strikingly distinctive from all other yachts. Jubilee’s interior configuration has been designed to comfortably accommodate around 70 passengers; guests and crew. With fifteen cabins for up to thirty guests, comprising a master suite, 2 VIP staterooms, and 10 double cabins, she is also capable of carrying up to forty-six crew in twenty-six cabins to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience. Among the owners requests for a Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) compliant yacht were a wheelchair friendly elevator serving all five guest decks as well as a deck elevator on the aft deck to the beach club. For the guest accommodations, it was important to be able to establish distinct guest separation from the owner’s accommodations with the owner commanding the top deck levels. The owners were afforded a duplex apartment on their own private deck with special access to the sundeck. Guests also have excellent accommodations including four VIP suites on the upper deck. Her generous deck areas play host to a wide range of amenities including an outdoor bar, Jacuzzi and ample space for sunlounging and relaxing.

Igor Lobanov was engaged for exterior styling and design and Sorgiovanni Designs was responsible for the interior design. The exterior styling of Jubilee merges modern architecture with car design and yachting, fast lines, sharp surfaces, new additional angles and elegant proportions are the prevalent features. The metallic blue horizontal lines on the superstructure make Jubilee’s profile unique, all the stainless-steel items like stanchions or others are painted or coated with brass finish. The teak throughout is either open grain or oiled leaving matte and satin paint finishes being utilised for the fixed furniture. The interior brief was to transcend cultures and to blend contemporary design with opulence. The interior was inspired by the vibrant city of Casablanca with a blend of European and Arabian culture, ensuring high levels of detail is maintained throughout. In terms of special lifestyle amenities, a large beach club was an important design feature as was a sizable Hammam. A beautiful aquarium was requested and installed. Great care was taken to make an impressive aft deck arrangement with sun lounges around the large pool, along with another casual seating and a dining area— something for everyone. Windows were installed in the swimming pool for added light. Built to Passenger Yacht Code, she has a fully certified helicopter operating deck forward with a concealed mooring deck below. Viewed from above, her curvaceous lines lead aft to a large pool deck with built- in aquarium and substantial beach club below. Sam Sorgiovanni designed the interior to be both spacious and rich, offering vast accommodation. Burgess introduced this project to Oceanco and

provided technical consultancy and project management as the owner’s representative throughout the entire build process. Jubilee represents a number of firsts in yachting, not only for her size, but also the fact that she is a fully turn-key project completely outfitted at delivery including all owner’s supplies; tenders, spares, water sports equipment, china, crystal, silverware, table linen, sheets, loose furniture, cushions, et al. Everywhere you look aboard Oceanco, the level of detail is extraordinary. For instance, the 100-square meter pattern on the ceiling, a parametric modern design applied to the ceiling with many sheets of film. The central dining area has a bespoke designed and built chandelier, which also hides the air-conditioning exhaust. The oval shape of the dining table is supported by an oval chandelier and oval whirlpool-like pattern on the teak floor. Oceanco used specially treated wedge inlays for the dark wood outlines. Jubilee is a gorgeous yacht that is not only interesting for her aesthetics, but she represents a high level of technological achievement. PYC is a strict code to follow yet Oceanco managed to find solutions to make the vessel work from every standpoint. They were honoured to be asked to build Jubilee as the project represented a benchmark for the company, at 110-metres in length she is the largest yacht they have ever built and the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands to date. Naturally building a yacht of this magnitude requires a tremendous amount of coordination with the designers and in this case also with Burgess. Jonathan Beckett, CEO of Burgess commented, “The delivery of Jubilee is a real milestone - not just for Burgess - but for the yachting industry at large.”

The Italian yard Perini Navi launched its latest yacht, the 60-metre sailing yacht Seven at its yard in Viareggio earlier this year. Seven is an aluminium ketch, the third hull launched in the successful 60-metre sailing yacht series by Perini. Designed and built by Perini Navi, with the input from naval architect Ron Holland and Dante O Benini Architects and Partners, Seven exemplifies Italian design and craftsmanship. Ron Holland, a long-time partner, collaborated with the Perini Navi design in-house team on the project, developing Seven’s naval architecture. The Italian design brand Dante O Benini took care of the interior layout and styling of the project, collaborating with Perini Navi for the first time. The interior is subtle and elegant, defined by light-colored sycamore woodwork and Armani Casa decor. With six staterooms, including two master suites, the owner will be able to accommodate his seven grandchildren and their families on his yacht. Seven has excellent headroom and natural light throughout. Several teak dining tables in the cockpit beneath the flybridge allow for outside gatherings and alfresco, family-style meals. “We wanted a name that expressed the strong bond with my family: Seven because seven is the number of my grandchildren,” commented Owner, Ennio Doris. “With this new yacht we can all sail together, a passion that unites us and brings us together. I love Perini Navi yachts because they connect us with nature, with the magic of the sea, indescribable sensations like the rustling

of the wind, the movement of the waves, nevertheless, without giving up modern conveniences.” Seven is the 62nd yacht to be built by Perini Navi and is the third in the successful 60m series which includes Seahawk and Perseus. This yacht demonstrates Perini Navi’s commitment to offering owners innovative technology and solutions for performance, uncomplicated sailing and onboard comfort. Seven was one of the largest sailing superyachts at the Monaco show. The ketch-rig yacht is designed for racing and long-distance cruising with a main mast height of 207 feet from the keel to the top, and a total sail area of more than 21,520 square feet. She features a sleek hull and superstructure, with Two Panamax aluminium masts dressed with carbon-fibre rigging, booms and spreaders, which will carry more than 2,000 square metres of sail. Rather than a large crew hoisting and lowering sails, most of the hard work is automated, done by pushing buttons on the all-glass helm screens and manoeuvring joysticks. Below decks, hydraulic drums the size of life rafts furl and trim sails much faster than any crew could. Technically, Seven is one of the most advanced sailing superyachts ever built. “The launch of Seven is a moment of great joy. The realisation of this project represents an important achievement for the shipyard, in which we worked in close synergy with the owners,” commented Perini Navi Chairman and CEO Lamberto Tacoli. “This is also the first launch since

Perini Navi entered into the partnership agreement with the Tabacchi family and is testament to how the company has kept its core values intact, while at the same time strengthening the brand’s position as a world leader in Italian excellence.” One Brand, One Company. Going forward, Perini Navi will be the sole brand for both sailing and motor yachts. Perini Navi, which represents a genuine way of life onboard and the culture of the sea, will now incorporate the Picchiotti brand. The Perini Navi logo has also been slightly refined in keeping with the values and tradition of the brand, which embodies Italian excellence. “Seven is not a simple yacht, in fact, when you are onboard a Perini Navi you will discover the true meaning of Made in Italy. Seven is the result of a project characterised by the artistic, creative and aesthetic spirit that uniquely distinguishes Italian excellence in the world. The owner is Italian, the yard is Italian, as is the crew and the architect who designed it – even the flag is Italian” said Ennio Dorris. “Seven is an important project, a challenge that marked the beginning of the new path undertaken by the Company. We have chosen to combine sailing and motor yachts under the Perini Navi brand” explained Lamberto Tacoli, “and are launching innovative product lines. We believe strongly in the projects that we are working on, with the aim of strengthening our offer and keeping intact the tradition, quality and innovation, values that are indispensable for Perini Navi.”

HISTORY COMING BACK TO THE PRESENT Peugeot Design Lab Concept Jet HX1

Luxe et al 85

PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB THOUGHT IT WOULD BE INTRIGUING TO DESIGN A JET INSPIRED BY A CAR THAT WAS INSPIRED BY A JET. TO SEE WHAT THE AIRCRAFT WOULD LOOK LIKE AFTER BEING PASSED THOUGH THE FILTER OF AN AUTOMOTIVE DESIGN PROJECT.

Since the 1930s the Peugeot brand focused more and more on its mobility products. Today five product families remain; tools, mills, bicycles, scooters and cars, with the automobile being the primary mission of the company. During the celebration of their 200th birthday in 2010 they decided to refocus some resources towards their non-automotive heritage and created the Peugeot Design Lab to design non-automotive products and offer 200 years of industrial experience to other brands. The HX1 Jet was designed for the Peugeot Design Lab studios launch event. At the time, the majority of their projects were confidential, so they created a concept jet, powerboat & yacht to illustrate the types of projects the studio would be working on. The Jet was inspired by the PEUGEOT HX1 concept car (and designed by the same designer), the reasoning for the car was to recreate the experience of a private jet on the road. Peugeot Design Lab thought it would be intriguing to design a jet inspired by a car that was inspired by a jet. To see what the aircraft would look like after being passed though the filter of an automotive design project. The V wing tail plane is one of the key elements of the design. The integrated jet engines behind the cabin (for aerodynamic efficiency and to reduce cabin noise) and the canard wings on either side of the cockpit are the exterior designer, Atila Bocsi, favoured aspects of the project.

86 Luxe et al

The challenge of designing a mass production automobile is one of, if not, the most complex design challenge. There are many products like aircraft, ocean liners, trains that are much more complex than a car but the fact that they need to build 1 car per minute makes automotive development unique. It takes around 2 years to design a car and then another 2 years to design the machine that will build a car every 60 seconds. The complexity of this design challenge means that automotive design centres are amongst the best equipped in the world. Peugeot has over 150 designers and 12,000 engineers that include experts in almost every domain. All of this automotive knowhow is available to Peugeot Design Lab and their clients. The business jet concept was inspired by the world of the HX1 Concept Car. It offers a vision that is luxurious, hi-tech and exclusively for luxury travel, cleverly thought out by interior designer, Thomas Josson. The identity is characterised by perfectly profiled fuselage which integrates its jet engines within its outline, similar to the design of a fighter plane. In the same spirit, the tail plane has two fins, unheard of in this type of aircraft whilst the wings include very technological lighting in their leading edges. The interior treatment is in a spirit that is evocative of luxury, ergonomic efficiency and lightness. Of modular design, it is possible to accommodate between 8 and

14 passengers by means of a system of tipping seats. It has a strong and positive identity, setting the scene for its innovations. Peugeot is a company of more than 200 years, that embarked on the path to manufacturing in 1810 with the creation of a steel foundry. The reputation of the tools and coffee mills emerging from these factories built the brand’s renowned name. The arrival of cycles then automobiles changed the company into a leading manufacturing group. This passing of time means an accumulation of knowledge, experiences and reveals an aptitude to listen and adapt based on solid, responsible, and forward-looking values. Peugeot entered the design consultancy market in 2012 with the launch of its global brand design studio specialising in non-automotive objects: Peugeot Design Lab. In this new business, Peugeot Design Lab is making full use of the knowledge acquired from these over 200 years of industrial experience, innovation and brand management. Peugeot Design Lab strives to develop unique brand experiences and products for its clients through its global brand design strategy, taking advantage of the unparalleled resources and expertise of a global automotive brand.
