JIM THOMPSON

Dreams of luxury, cosmopolitan summertime-living inspire Jim Thompson’s latest outdoor collection, which takes its name from the resplendent Hotel Negresco, located in the fashionable French Riviera. This grand, five-star establishment is famed for its much frequented bar which influential writers have flocked to over the years to discuss their latest musings, alongside society men and women, looking to escape the bustle of New York, London or Paris. Negresco encapsulates a generation of well-seasoned travellers, who would have equally felt at home at Jim Thompson’s dinner table. For his first outdoor collection for Jim Thompson, Ou Baholyodhin has returned to nature and a vacationing lifestyle for inspiration. This transpires through the vivid exotic colours, representative of tropical island life; and the unique and contradicting landscapes, the essence of which have been captured and transformed into sturdy dualpurpose fabrics. The joys of travel are also a key source of influence, alongside the fascinating, vibrant and sublime aesthetics we uncover as curious travellers.

12 Luxe et al

Negresco demonstrates that opulent outdoor fabrics can be created without compromising on quality or style, made evident from the luxurious outdoor velvet and the bold colourways and prints manifested on sumptuous, durable textiles. The fabrics featured in this collection have been specially treated and some have been created using high performance, Dralon acrylic yarns, to guarantee the highest durability. This collection comprises a refined selection of clean, classic, and easy to use contemporary designs and colourways.

DESIGNER IN PROFILE...

RIK O’HANLON-SMITH Director Passmore of Colchester Ltd Which sector do you specialise in? Yacht Upholstery. Is the Super yacht market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, very much. We opened our Southampton workshop to be perfectly situated to work closely with a major customer’s yard on the south coast. We provide upholstery for their 80 to 120ft super yachts, which has become a large part of our business. How long have you worked in this sector? The family run business was founded in 1960 by my grandmother, whose maiden name the company still uses today. Starting out with domestic retail stores in Colchester and Ipswich, we entered into the marine market in 1978. Following significant success in the yachting sector Passmore left the domestic market in 1988. I joined the company during my father’s time at the helm in 2001. Prior to this I worked in London and Sydney as an art director. I fully took over family ownership of Passmore of Colchester in 2012 and opened Passmore of Southampton Ltd, for improved service to the larger yachts, in 2013.

Can you please give details of recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/ participation in these projects? We have recently introduced an exclusive new mattress for the yacht market in conjunction with Vispring, the luxury bed and mattress manufacturer. This has been very popular, we have just fitted out five super yachts with them, for which we have had extremely positive feedback. In terms of products on the bench at the moment, we have been working closely with Hardy Marine on their new 62’ motor yacht. This upholstery project has been a collaboration between us, Chris Lock at yacht design agency Synolo Design, and an owner just as passionate as us. It has been great fun and we look forward to its launch next year. We have also just started working on upholstery ideas and samples for Oyster’s new 118ft sailing yacht in build at the moment. We hope perhaps another interior award will be awarded to Oyster Yachts for this stunning new build in a year or so. Watch this space…

PASSMORE OF COLCHESTER Specialists in marine upholstery, Passmore of Colchester has been a family run business for over fifty years. From a single small outlet making soft furnishings, Passmore has grown to become one of the UK’s premier marine upholstery manufacturers, supplying luxury yacht builders such as Oyster Marine and Spirit Yachts. Passmore works closely with yacht owners or their interior designers from the early stages of fit out to help them decide on materials and colour schemes. Putting personal service at the heart of its offering, Passmore invites clients to its West Mersea showroom in Essex, so they can touch and feel the products before deciding on the final designs. All of Passmore’s upholstery is made by hand and is customised to suit each yacht. Sourcing the highest quality materials from all over the world, the Passmore team visits international design and marine trade shows to ensure they are offering the latest innovative products on the market. Projects range from award-winning, modern super yachts over 100ft to luxury, wooden yachts built for both racing and cruising. Passmore recently produced upholstery for the awardnominated Spirit Yachts 47CR cruising yacht. Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart comments, “We have worked with Passmore for nearly 10 years and the service is second to none; Rik and his team are always on hand to offer expert advice. The quality of Passmore’s products is renowned and they are continually innovating to find bespoke solutions for each project.” www.passmore-yacht-upholstery.co.uk

Which other sectors do you work in? Our core sector is the marine market; this is where our experience lies and we have built a reputation for quality and service across the industry. However, from time to time, we are asked to help out on a domestic project that needs our technical expertise or level of finish. Luxe et al 13

GEMMA WEIR-WILLIAMS Creative Director Gillian Weir Ltd Which sector do you specialise in? We specialize in the very special! We design, source and supply bespoke interior accessories for the world’s most exclusive interiors, from tableware and crystal through to linens and cashmere, where only the finest will make the grade. Is the Super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? It is indeed. 75% of our projects are on Super yachts, the remaining 25% is split between luxury residential and aviation. How long have you worked in this sector? 6 years. What other sectors do you work in? We have our own weavers in Nepal and so specialize in bespoke hand woven cashmere throws, blankets, cushions and bedcovers which we supply to high end retailers in the UK and the States. If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects. I’m not at liberty to talk in detail as with most of our projects we sign NDAs as our clients are very private. However over the years we have had the pleasure to work with the very best naval architects on some of the worlds finest and award winning yachts. As a designer, some of the interiors I have had the privilege to be involved with have literally blown me away. Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. Each and every project is 16 Luxe et al

utterly unique so knowledge and adaptability is key. Understanding the client, the brief and the special requirements is essential … once all of these are clear we are able to start work on sourcing, selecting or creating bespoke items using our vast portfolio of over 400 suppliers. We love to utilize our very talented UK manufacturers where possible from flatware silversmiths in Sheffield to creators of sensational Chinaware in Derby. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? The knowledge and passion to provide the very best service. When you are working with clients to select intimate items such as bed linens and pillows it really is a very personal decision and being able to guide and advise throughout is our priority. Working within the Super yacht/Aviation sector must be different than domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? Absolutely! As standard, nothing is standard!

GILLIAN WEIR The ultimate indulgence for exclusive interiors. With an already established business designing, sourcing and supplying interior accessories to the super yacht industry, Gillian Weir and her team understand luxury. This background knowledge has led to them to specialise in the finest fibre in the world, cashmere. Each bespoke throw, blanket, bedcover and cushion from Gillian Weir is beautifully soft and luxurious. Custom made to each client’s specification in precious pure cashmere or blended with silky soft bamboo, hand dyed, hand woven and hand finished to perfection… These really are items to be treasured. Every step of the process is customisable, allowing the client to create their perfect accessory for each and every interior scheme. With Gillian Weir’s large colour palette of 45 shades, there is almost certainly always a colour to suit. Plus if the perfect shade required is not available then colour matching to a fabric swatch, pantone or RAL colour is no problem at all. Most of the looms used are just less than three meters wide and so can create blankets to fit perfectly on the biggest of beds. In this much bespoke world of luxury nothing is standard and so being able to create throws that drape perfectly over the edge of any size of bed is always possible. With a large portfolio of weave designs and three weights to choose from, it is possible to create a fun relaxed throw or a classic beautiful winter weight blanket for a sumptuous night sleep. The finishing touches really enhance the piece and enable the creation of a completely unique finish. If the client is looking for relaxed, rustic finish there are eight gorgeous tassel designs to choose from. If a smart, sleek luxe look is the intention of the design then a silk border may be recommended. Gillian Weir believes that there is nothing like their fabulous cashmere binding for a more natural, contemporary style. This really is the ultimate indulgence for exclusive interiors. www.gillianweir.co.uk

ILOROM LLC

Which sector do you specialise in? Textiles for interiors with a focus on our proprietary pattern-changing fabrics marketed under the Woven Animation® and ZEZ® brands. Is the Super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, we see great growth potential in these sectors. When I started identifying markets for these unique fabrics the aircraft market was immediately receptive, and then the super yacht market opened up to us. How long have you worked in this sector? We have been involved with these sectors for about five years. What other sectors do you work in? Our fabrics are suitable for residential, contract and hospitality interiors, and crossover interest is building for product applications. If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects. As an early stage company we have been focused on the completion of our initial collection. Now that the collection has debuted we are pleased with the level of interest being expressed in the fabrics. A residential customer just completed the upholstery of a curved-back chair using our Hex2 pattern. The form of the chair beautifully compliments the dynamic nature of the Woven Animation fabric. 20 Luxe et al

Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. Dualism really defines the approach to creating our fabrics. Every completed design has two distinct patterns embedded into the weave structure. These two patterns each have a visual and conceptual relationship to the another when paired. They can be dramatically different or they can be very similar for a more nuanced transition. A key aspect of the design composition is the layout of the two patterns in relationship to each other which determines the fluidity or dichotomy that the viewer sees in the pattern change. Beyond the imagery, colors and yarn types for weaving, the fabrics are selected to achieve the desired visual, tactile and functional qualities. Depending on the stylistic quality desired, artwork is produced either by using design software or by hand. Personally, I still enjoy creating artwork by hand. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? We are driven by creating visually dynamic fabric, whether created from traditional materials that use innovative techniques or created from innovative materials applied to traditional techniques. ILOROM does not aim to be a typical fabric house. Having discovered this never-before-know technique, I set out to develop it into a viable commercial product and because of my background in textile and product design I am interested in seeing the fabric used as both an integral 3D design component and a decorative surface application. I want designers in various disciples to be inspired by the unique nature of our optically dynamic materials.

ILOROM Fabrics created with the Magic of Illusion. ILOROM creates extraordinary textiles for interior and architectural applications that transform ordinary furnishings and surfaces into exceptional experiences. Their awardwinning textiles have a woven construction resulting in a unique fabric in which distinct patterns change according to the viewing angle. The proprietary weaving technique used to produce this elegant fabric was developed by founder and Creative Director, Wanda Miglus. Made in America, these fabrics are well suited to luxury interiors including those of super yacht and private aircraft, as well as prestigious hospitality and residential settings. Fabrics that carry the Woven Animation® label have been performance tested against standards established by the Association for Contract Textiles, while the ZEZ® branded collection is committed to compliance with safety standards set by the US Coast Guard, International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Whether complex or simple, each design explores the relationship between motifs that work in tandem to evoke the magic of illusion and the experience of active engagement. All designs are original and created with an eye toward maximizing the fabric’s illusionary effect. Thoughtful consideration is given to the unique characteristics of super yacht and aircraft interiors when creating designs, selecting yarn types and coordinating colors. Both elegant and playful, this dynamic, high quality material will accentuate the experience of an interior space, focal surface or piece of furniture. In addition to their available collection, ILOROM creates tailored designs for bespoke applications.

JENNIFER COLEMAN Director of Aviation Sales Garrett Leather Corporation

Which sector do you specialise in? Corporate, General and VIP aviation markets Is the aviation and/or yacht market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, the aviation market has been an integral part of Garrett Leather’s success. Garrett Leather works hand-inhand with aviation designers throughout the world to develop new colors and products that meet exacting aviation industry requirements. We offer several products that have been developed specifically for the aviation market. The most widely specified products are treated during tanning to meet FAR requirements, so the leather may ship immediately to our customers. How long have you worked in this sector? I have been working in the Aviation sector at Garrett Leather for the past 20 years. Which other sectors do you work in? In addition to the aviation and yachting industries, Garrett Leather also works in residential, corporate and hospitality design, automotive restoration, furniture manufacturing, and motor coach interiors.

Can you please give details of recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects? Garrett Leather received numerous requests for a product that would work well in contemporary designs. We began with a pallet of soft gray and taupe in a matte finish and used this as the basis for developing our Flight collection. Working closely with our tannery, we added the benefit of passing the 60 sec vertical burn to give customers peace of mind when specifying Flight for part 135 aircraft. Trends/design directions moving forward... Customers appear to be moving toward the use of more texture. Colour choices may still be traditional and more subtle, but adding a bit of texture offers a nice transition on the lower sidewall. Final thoughts or words of wisdom Work hard in silence. Let success be your noise.

WALLCOVERING, FLOORING REVOLUTIONARY DECKING ESTHEC®

Esthec® was introduced as a revolutionary decking material for the yacht building industry. While the mindset of the nautical industry was mainly focused on using natural materials such as teak, Esthec® added a new dynamic by allowing architects and designers more freedom, both in terms of colour and design. In the last decade, a growing number of yacht builders have moved away from the traditional combination of teak and black caulking and choose Esthec® decking material, because of the many design possibilities it offers. Esthec® decking comes in a choice of 13 standard shades that customers can combine with five caulking colours. Using a different colour of caulking line can produce interesting effects and give the deck a completely different look. This has already been successfully applied on several modern and innovative yachts such as ARROW460-

THE EVOLUTION OF ORNAMENTATION WOLZ NAUTIC

Yachts bring dreams and desires to life: expectations of perfection and unforgettable moments, they allow escapism from everyday life. Yachts combine luxury and excellence. Teak, iroko or synthetic are the chosen materials used in building yacht-decks. As a technological leader Wolz Nautic recognise the importance of work being carried out with the highest precision, irrespective of the material used and always aim to produce higher and better quality level than others. For this reason they specialise in the prefabrication of system elements and complete decks. This has allowed Wolz Nautic to establish a new international quality standard in the past 25 years. Their 125 employees annually process approx. 1,000,000 metres of strips of wood to approximately 3,000 pre-manufactured Teakdecks of 26 Luxe et al

an area of about 12,000 square metres. In addition, they also manufacture exclusive special orders for super-mega yachts. The patented Wolz Nautic Teakdecks on cork-carrierplate for nautical use not only have outstanding sound quality levels whilst simultaneously significantly reducing the weight, but this unique technology also allows Wolz Nautic to reduce the production process in the shipyard to a minimum. So, the advantages for the shipyard are obvious: the projects can be executed in a clearer and more efficient manner. www.wolznautic.de

TIM BUTCHER Founder / Director Fromental Ltd Which sector do you specialise in? High end residential/private projects Is the Super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Super yachts have been a growing part of our business. The owners of super yachts are the same high net worth individuals who purchase our residential products. We specialise in ultimate luxury whether it be in beautiful houses or super yachts. How long have you worked in this sector? I have been making high end bespoke products for 20 years and for 12 years with Fromental. Over the last 12 years we have had various commissions within yachts with an increasing number over the past 4-5 years. What other sectors do you work in? We also work in high end hospitality and gaming. The private villas and gaming rooms of casinos in Vegas and Macau are adorned with embroidered Fromental silks. We also produce large scale artworks for installations in exclusive hotels and restaurants. Can you tell us about some of your recent projects. Commercial: For the Wynn Hotels we have created numerous unique spaces. Huge intricately embroidered scenes in private gaming spaces and penthouse suites. One of the most beautiful are the Baccarat rooms in Encore Las Vegas peacocks are embroidered and painted in the finest gold thread on rich green silk. At the Goring Hotel in London we were commissioned to produce a unique scene hand-painted onto silver leaf. The hotel is a quintessentially English space

with an eccentric character. The imagery was an archetypal English landscape but where the animals have escaped from the zoo; polar bears and lions hiding amongst the trees. The hotel was opened by the Duchess of Cambridge who painted in the horn of the unicorn instead of the traditional cutting of the ribbon. At the London NYC and West Hollywood we worked with legendary designer David Collins to create unique artworks and wall panels. Scenes of London are portrayed with grace and humour in silk thread. In the West Hollywood hotel monkeys career through the trees carrying stolen Oscars. Yachts: We produced some beautiful rooms on the Quinta Essentia for the Admiral Boat yard. Delicate embroidered scenes in layered shades of platinum for the master bedroom suite. Other: We worked with Rolls-Royce on a unique concept car for the Geneva motorshow. For their brief we used the finest hand-painting and embroidery to create a roof lining and upholstery to create a wholly unique and spectacular interior. Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. Every project we produce is bespoke. We have a huge archive and sketchbook of patterns which can be the starting point and we tailor them to each specific project. We work closely with the interior designers and owners to understand the end vision. We specialise in surfaces but work closely with space designers to ensure we understand the way the surface influences the space and thus the space informs the composition.

FROMENTAL Fromental makes the world’s most beautiful handmade wallpapers. Combining the finest skills together with luxurious fabrics we create contemporary, timeless interiors. Informed by a variety of art forms and styles from across the centuries, Fromental creates unique new designs that are at once fresh, timeless and elegant. Our collection of bird and flower chinoiseries aspires to retain the elegance of the 18th century designs whilst bringing something new to a traditional aesthetic. Our chinoiseries include both classic and contemporary interpretations of the genre, available in over 60 standard colourways with 7 background styles, all of which can be customised either in part or whole. We pioneered the technique of embellishing traditional hand-painted chinoiserie with fine silk embroidery, taking an already supreme decorative form to new heights of opulence. Our 20th century panoramics comprise more contemporary, nonrepeating compositions, hand-painted with optional touches of embroidery. Again, the composition, colours and techniques are tailored to meet individual requirements. www.fromental.co.uk

RENÉ BUCHINGER Director of Research & Development F/LIST Which sector do you specialise in? F/LIST delivers top quality interior for business and private aircraft, mega yachts and luxury residences. Is the Super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, the business and private aviation sector is our primary market which is our fastest growing market and which makes up about 75 percent of our turnover. How long have you worked in this sector? I am pretty new to the aviation sector. I started an apprenticeship as a carpenter and specialized my knowledge during my studies in Wood Technology at the University of Applied Sciences. I have been in F/LIST’s R&D team for six years. Before that, I had several years of experience in the testing of wood and other materials in a laboratory.

Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. Our key to success is that we take on challenges others shy away from. We take the customers’ requirements and then we develop a solution for them. Once such a product has been created, we constantly strive to improve it, to make it lighter, thinner or more resilient. That’s the way market leaders stay market leaders. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? Exactly this courage, to take on any challenge as daring as it may be, but also the perfect integration of traditional craftsmanship and state-of-theart production technologies, and our broad set of competences and knowhow, which allows us to cover the entirety of our products’ value chains in-house.

If able, please give details

Working within the Super yacht/Aviation sector must be different than domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? There are a lot more limitations and requirements for any products in these sectors. Meeting and surpassing all the standards for non-flammability, weight, break resistance and others, while still delivering a beautiful and affordable product is a challenge and requires a lot of research and creativity.

of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects (residential, commercial, yachts etc.). At the moment we are shortlisted for the Crystal Cabin Award – the most prestigious award in the aviation industry – with our unique Heated Stone flooring. We are quite proud of this innovation because it is the only fully certifiable real stone flooring with integrated heating on the market.

Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/ affected your work in recent years. The major technological advancement that affected our daily work is the smartphone. Fast-paced communication, the availability of information anywhere and anytime and the increased flood of pictures and data has had a huge impact on how we work.

What other sectors do you work in? At F/LIST we focus on developing new materials and technologies for the aircraft and yachting sectors. However, we also try to synergize our capabilities with and for other sectors.

RICH RUGGERI Executive Vice President Aviation Scott Group Studio

Is the Super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Absolutely. Aviation is the cornerstone of our business. So much so that we just recently acquired PWV Studios, a boutique custom carpet and rug manufacturer who has specialized in creating luxury product for the aviation sector (as well as residential, high-end retail and commercial market) for nearly forty years. PWV is known for their highly textural luxury products and for their unparalleled craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail. This transaction will allow Scott Group Studio to expand the overall portfolio and product offerings. If able, please give details of your recent acquisition’s projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects. Three recent, and vastly different, projects that were executed under PWV, our newest brand to the Scott Group Studio family, were the boardrooms of Boeing, the Housing Bank of Trade and Finance in Amman, Jordan and the famous Dhamani Jewels in Dubai. All projects utilized V’Soske’s textural innovations which delivered outstanding results. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? I think it’s being a true and valued partner throughout the entire process. We listen. By listening to what’s said – and what goes unsaid – we work hand-in-hand with our clients and designers until we completely understand what they want. We have 18 Scott Group designers in house. Each is highly skilled and highly 36 Luxe et al

knowledgeable about materials, patterns, colors, combinations, fibers, finishes and anything and everything that goes into creating the world’s finest carpet. Doing this never gets old. Every single project is the start of an entirely new journey. Together, we create one-of-akind masterpieces. I believe this type of collaboration is what sets us apart. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/ affected your work in recent years. Our newly acquired brand PWV’s leader Paul V’Soske has developed signature techniques over the last 40-plus years to create interesting designs in the simplest way possible. His minimalist approach has created some of the most innovative and elegant textures seen in the carpet industry. And because of PWVs commitment to making product in the most efficient way possible, quick-turn arounds are the norm. We are excited to bring the PWV brand into Scott Group Studio, offering beautiful handmade textures in as little as one to three weeks. Do you have any news you would like to share? Again, the acquisition of PWV, which was finalized in early February, will allow Scott Group Studio to add PWV’s unique product line to its established Scott Group Custom Carpets business aviation line of products. PWV will enable Scott Group Studio to expand its vast array of patterns and textures and offer the PWV brand as a quick-turn handmade option with lead times as little as one to three weeks. Let me repeat that… we are now able to deliver hand-tufted, luxury carpet to the aviation market in as little as one to three weeks!

SCOTT GROUP STUDIO At Scott Group Studio, it starts with an idea, a vision. It’s a deep understanding of knowing how to combine luxury fibres like silk, cashmere and merino wool to achieve a vision of beauty. it’s this process combined with a true artisan approach that will ultimately yield a result so superb, so unique that result is one of a kind – a masterpiece. Since 1969 Scott Group Studio has been designing and manufacturing custom carpets for the aviation, yacht, residential and commercial markets. Each as distinctive and opulent as the next. It’s an orchestrated balance of combining the most sophisticated technologies along with the timeless art of rug making that makes Scott Group Studio so distinctive – exceptional. Scott Group Studio is recognised for its holistic commitment to the design and manufacturing of luxury carpets. They embrace a range of disciplines, each integral to the process of taking a carpet from concept to completion. As for the process, it is remarkably human at every step. From the first conversation to the moment one sees the finished product, clients learn why Scott Group Studio’s team is trusted by some of the world’s most discerning individual and organisations. Imagery, intention and quality executed perfectly. Scott Group Studio – the craft of luxury. www.scottgroupstudio.com

THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR AMER YACHTS WAS TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN PROVIDING THE UTMOST LUXURY WHILST MAINTAINING A LOW MAINTENANCE YACHT WHICH IS KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT.

When Amer Yachts Shipyard decided to create something unique, the collaboration between the parent company Permare, which includes Amer Yachts, and Volvo Penta resulted in the award winning Amer Cento Quad, the largest super yacht to be powered by four Volvo Penta IPS propellers. This project to adopt the IPS engines in a super yacht proves that it is possible to significantly reduce consumptions, air emissions, noise and vibrations whilst guaranteeing maximum interior space and supreme manoeuvrability. At the Cannes Yachting Festival 2016 the Amer Cento Quad was awarded the ‘Most Innovative Yacht’. This award was given for their new engine layout, the first super yacht of its size to be equipped with 4X Volvo Penta IPS 1050 engines. The yacht has a group 2 of counter-rotating propellers, with a total of 7 blades and a cruising speed of 23.5 knots.

Now Amer Yachts are celebrating shortlisting success at The International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 to be held in Venice in May, in the category Power Yacht 25 - 40m. The naval architecture and external design was completed by Massimo Verme and compromises of a GRP hull. The innovative interiors were designed by Stefano Tini. Amer Yachts wanted the Amer Cento Quad to be innovative and luxurious which meant a very particular design was required. First of all, for the beauty of the design and secondly for the high functionality and technicality. The biggest challenge for Amer Yachts was to bridge the gap between providing the utmost luxury whilst maintaining a low maintenance yacht which is kind to the environment. The yacht can accommodate 10 guests with its 5 passenger rooms. It has one master room, two double rooms and two twin rooms. On the main deck the saloon has a warm décor with custom designed furniture, all the woods used are smoked oak. The extendable lunch table in polished steel and crystal was made by Riflessi. The chairs for the lunch table were designed by Bonaldo and combine warm leather with modern polished steel. Vintage teak flooring was chosen for the interiors of the yacht for the best functionality and the most luxurious design. The flooring is environmentally friendly and is made out of regenerated, recycled teak from houses built on the island of Java dating back a 100 years. The stairs leading down to the guest cabins

44 Luxe et al

are made with a combination of polished steel and vintage teak. An equilibrium between modern and warm classic. The success of this new launch is built on its predecessor Amer 94 Save the Sea, and innovations such as cork decks for the exterior, reducing the weight of the boat considerably, have been applied to Amer Cento Quad. The exterior space offers several areas for sunbathing and relaxation. Key features include a spa pool on the flybridge and a hardtop bimini, which provides shade for the upper helm station and surrounding seating. The main-deck saloon features two L-shaped sofas and a separate dining area, which provides seating for six around a large dining table. These external spaces can be customised to meet the client’s requests with options for a swimming pool or jacuzzi. The collaboration with Volvo Penta has exceeded expectations. Clients who want comfort, luxury and a smooth performing super yacht, with exquisite manoeuvrability, quietness of propulsion, the possibility to sail at low displacement and a good cruising speed, have it all in Amer Cento Quad. The boat will be delivered next year. The sale confirms the success of the cooperation between the shipyard and Volvo Penta in developing highly innovative products, an added value that combined with Amer’s custom tradition makes these boats really unique. The shipyard will keep on investing in innovation to reach ever better performances and “green-oriented” products with reduced consumptions and low air emissions. IPS drives, introduced on the market more than a decade ago, mean for yacht owners a reduction by 30% in fuel consumption, compared to traditional drives. Amer Yachts believe the design works so well because the yacht is highly technological and innovative in her engine system (less pollution and small oil consumptions), which inspired innovation throughout her development, whilst combining luxury with respect for the environment. The Amerio family, owner of Permare Shipyard, build yachts under the brand Amer Yachts. The family have a real passion and respect for the sea, that has been handed down from generation to generation.

The design concept was developed in co-operation with Boeing Business Jets and visualized by ACA-3D with the goal of highlighting the interior possibilities enabled by the BBJ 777-300ER. With the widest and largest cabin of any twinengine airplane flying today, the BBJ 777 freed the design from the traditional train/car-like aisle and cabin layout. The end result was a varied and functional VIP aircraft concept that provides superior comfort for all those aboard, for what is one of the furthest flying aircraft in the world. There were four main tasks involved with the design, the first was to emphasize the ample area (278.8 m2) and height of the B777-300ER. The second was to include a wide variety of spaces, including the currently trendy VIP mini-suites, lie-flat seating for all aboard and a grand lounge. The third task was to appeal to a global audience and the final task was to ensure all those aboard, from Principal, to VIP guests, to staff, have a comfortable space to spend ultra-long 10,000 nm flights. With these four tasks in mind Unique Aircraft approached the challenge firstly by considering the layout in separate areas, and functions with modules and or special features, instead of following the traditional outlook of building a series of boxes inside the cabin. The design intentionally alternates between narrow and spacious to exaggerate the effect of the 5.9 m wide fuselage on the passenger as they enter each new zone. Secondly, starting from the front, the layout consists of a private area with bedroom and bathroom, then a grand common open space followed by a separate dining/conference area in the centre of the aircraft. Aft of this room, and past the cupola shaped lavatory and storage complex, is the VIP guest area with private apartments and a more intimate lounge/movie room. Upon reaching door four, passengers will find a large galley, and immediately beyond, private First Class compartments. The very rear of the aircraft features generous lie-flat business class seating, bringing the total passenger count to about 75. Thirdly, because of the significant volume of the B777, Unique Aircraft wanted the cabin interior design to be lively and

UNIQUE AIRCRAFT INTERIORS WORK SEAMLESSLY FOR PERSONAL AND BUSINESS USE.

stimulating. Thus, they eschewed two tone wood and leather and instead looked to lounges of contemporary luxury hotels for inspiration. The timeless design makes use of floor to ceiling panels covered with a variety of fabrics, wood, stone and paint. In addition, transparent panels are used to separate areas, while at the same time maintaining an airy atmosphere. The selected colours are a homogenous mixture to excite one’s senses; greens for balance, calm and regeneration, brown woods for safety and reliability, light warm greys for clarity and orange-reds for vitalisation and re-energisation. The design pays special attention to the latest technical innovations, including whole cabin humidification, curved / hidden OLED monitors, a full cooktop for true restaurant cuisine and mood lighting coupled with time release fragrances. The aircraft welcomes its passengers on board with an elegant, symmetrical entrance hall. The symmetry of the room is accentuated by a centre throw rug on the wooden floor and two eye-catching fabric panels fwd and aft. The geometric theme is continued on the ceiling, which features a classically inspired multicylinder chandelier. Ceiling height transparent dividers separate the lounge area from the hallway. Too large to expect everyone to converse together all the time, the grand lounge is designed around three seating groups. These separate but slightly overlapping seat groupings are flexible get-together areas, each illuminated with floor-mounted lamps that provide warm, even, shoulder level light. The modern swirling carpet design circulates around the centre monument which hosts a hidden pop-up bar. Cabinwide curved walls forward and aft are equipped with OLED monitors hidden behind moving fabric panels. Recessed light cut-outs in the headliner, mirror the curvature of the walls without impacting ceiling height. The primary feature of the almost oval-shaped dining area is the six seat centrally mounted dining table. Several minimalist overlapping circle fixtures provide concentrated

lighting over the dining area. The space is purpose built for dinners and meetings, both occasions where the focus is inward, toward the group or project. As a result, the lighting fades rapidly towards the sparingly mood lit walls, covered in dark fabric to further enhance the effect. Although the room is fully enclosed, the dining area makes use of priva-lite filled cut-outs in the hallway wall. These panels can be fully opaque, or completely transparent, allowing passengers to experience the full width of the 777 from within this separate space. Two curved light strips in the ceiling create a striking opening into the aircraftwide guest lounge. Large L-shaped divans both left and right invite people to gettogether and relax. Equipped with two 55” monitors, this area can also be used as a movie room. For mid-movie snacks, the buffet at the aft end of the room can be served directly from the galley behind. The bedroom is dominated by a king-sized bed framed by a ceiling height headboard and two monuments with softly lit cutouts for the Principle’s most treasured items. Situated slightly forward of the bed, a comfortable two place seating area provides a retreat space to the VIP. Continuing the theme of open space, a ceiling height curved glass wall with a 65” OLED monitor provides the necessary separation from the dressing area without making the bedroom feel cramped. In the dressing area, a 3m stowage wall and the oval cabinet provide ample storage for personal belongings. A vanity table at the inboard wall completes the arrangement. In lieu of physical separations, ambient lighting in the different areas creates isles of functions throughout the suite. Hidden behind the stowage wall is the private bathroom. More spa than bathroom, it features a huge curved double-sink washstand and back-lit swivelling mirror. The large walk-in bisazza covered shower with steam bath functions and a bench inside finishes the spa look. Warja Borges´ designs offer a perfect balance between unique customer requirements, functional arrangements and aircraft industry regulations. With the best utilisation of space and purpose designed furniture Unique Aircraft interiors work seamlessly for personal and business use. Unique´s style carefully blends the customer´s taste with old and new design trends to create a timeless cabin interior that combines tradition and modernity to stimulate the senses.

WORKING WITH LUXURY PROJECTS STUDIO HAS BEEN THE BEST EXPERIENCE WE HAVE EVER HAD.

Luxury Projects, and the founder of the Italian interior design studio Laura Pomponi, are celebrating the shortlist success of their refit project of the 38m Heesen yacht M/Y Destiny at the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017, to be held in May in Venice, in the category of Interior Design Award – Power Yacht. Having celebrated a much deserved win in the highly competitive International Yacht & Aviation Awards 2015, Laura has returned in style with shortlisted success in a number of categories for both interior design and product design.

M/Y Destiny has been a project with a clear focus right from the outset. From the very first briefing, the architecture and design of M/Y Destiny focused on the efficiency of the use of space. The remit was to create a collection of ambient environments for luxury living. With a style that is modern-minimalistic, the use of light and the functionality of the space have been optimised to provide the maximum perception of the internal expanse. This refit was designed to create a new yacht, a yacht which could be really enjoyed at all times and in all spaces. The salon, in particular, represents the incredible dimensions of space for a yacht of this size. The cosy salon with the relaxed aft area as well as the custom lounge sofa opposite the new large television, in conjunction with the new outdoor seating area, demonstrates explicitly how Luxury Projects have created continuity from outdoor to indoor. This seamless connection between the outdoor and indoor areas was critical in ensuring that the boat’s new design met the design brief. As ever Laura Pomponi would only source from the high-end suppliers and on this project they included Altraluce, Atelier du Litoral and Flexform. The new innovative lighting system is another key aspect of MY Destiny, making the difference in the perception of spaces and surfaces. The owners’ joy and appreciation for the work completed by Luxury Projects was evident as they commented “From all this experience, the best thing was the shock I had when I first saw the job done. I fell in love with Destiny the second I walked into her main deck lounge, not only the work and craftsmanship was perfectly done but specifically how Luxury Projects made the perfect use of each and every

60 Luxe et al

room and everything so extremely beautiful and useful at the same time”. Laura Pomponi believes that the success of the project was an absolute credit to the relationship of cooperation, inclusion and complete understanding that Luxury Projects formed with the owner from the very beginning. When that relationship worked so well, the project was set to succeed. The process began with immediate effect when the Luxury Projects team began to translate the conceptual design into working drawings and contractors and suppliers were straight away assigned to the job. The owners entrusted Laura Pomponi with all outsourcing decisions, as well as the on-site management and design choices. As a result, Laura was able to run the project in an astonishing time frame within the planned budget resulting in spectacular results and quality. The owners’ enthusiasm and delighted response to the success of this project was evident “Working with Luxury Projects Studio has been the best experience we have ever had in all the years working with many other decorators and designers. Laura and her team were always ready to listen to anything we had to say, ready to give us the proper time and discuss our ideas. Luxury Projects would offer us all possible options before we decided how to finalise any area on our boat.” From Laura’s perspective and vast experience of high-end interior design of both re-fits and new constructions, the craft of interior design is a continually exciting challenge. ‘It is always a great creativity effort to allow innovative design concepts to be neatly integrated in a new interior.’ Her philosophy behind her creativity is to consider each project from the perspective of client; entering their mindset, listening to them, observing their lifestyle. She realises their visions in terms of space, functionality and innovation. For Laura, a yacht has to give energy and pleasure to be lived in, then colours, materials, finishes get their important role. She also considers her impressive number of successful refit projects to have always been an opportunity to change the old for the new, adding less to create more. Her signature is to strive to create the unique in a distinctive style which uses a combination of special custom made luxury materials, which are mainly natural and re-engineered.

MICHELA REVERBERI OWNER - MICHELA REVERBERI STUDIO

Tell us a little about your background in design (education, experience etc.). I graduated in Architecture in Rome. After ten years’ experience in other architecture studios, of which eight were spent in Luigi Sturchio’s office, I started my own firm. What projects are you currently working on? I am developing a project of an 80m M/Y for Turquoise Yachts, a skyscraper for Vitruvius in Hong Kong and a 7-star resort in Tuscany. What projects have you recently completed? I just completed the refit of 64m S/Y Spirit of the C’s by Perini and the 55m M/Y Quinta Essentia. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? The refit of Spirit was carried out by Compositeworks Shipyard and the construction of Quinta Essentia was carried out by the Italian Sea Group. Where do you feel super yacht design is going in terms of interior schemes? Yacht design years ago drew its main references from the sea and projects were mainly founded on the idea the boats were used to cruise the seas. Despite how luxurious they were, architectonical and design choices were relegated to a small pool of aesthetic referring models, extremely identified and definitely limited compared to the aesthetical, architectonical and technological world available for urban projects. The gap between the two worlds was quite clear.

62 Luxe et al

But as it is instinctual to look further, to experience, to contaminate and to be contaminated, to structure and de-structure, overcome and return, I think more and more that yacht design is going towards the overcoming of this gap.

could look forward, considering that since the beginning the choice of the spotlight was generally inadequate.

Are there any key design directions you would like to discuss?

Music and fun. I enjoy doing what I do and I love working with people I esteem and that share my same passion for their work.

A greater awareness of the emotional potential of any projects that are going to be developed, assuming some risks in overcoming rules. All the choices shall tend to a merge and integration with the environment and a much greater respect for the natural elements that the boat will cross. Trends going forward? A wider coherence between the interior and exterior of yachts until a fade between the boundaries. What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. I am particularly fascinated in managing potentiality offered by the quantity and dimension of glass surfaces. On Stella Maris, for instance, the dimensions of the windows were amazing and they surrounded the salons on three sides. The project emphasized the verticality of the space, the power of the light, the unusual relationship between empty and full, reinterpreting the diversity and original features of the boat, connecting all elements through a rewriting of rules that govern the arrangement of the spaces and relationship between light and shadow, full and empty. A solution for artificial light had to be found as well at that point, it required a solution that

What products/services could you not live without when designing?

Any final thoughts? I am always ready to face any challenge, without prejudices and preconceptions, in order to achieve projects that look different and I will greatly enjoy. So, a little bit about you: Your favourite place to travel to in the world? All places where I can find new ideas and enjoy my family and friends, but Brazil has a special meaning for me. It is where everything started! All non-places where I can escape in books and dreams. Your favourite hotel/ restaurant/ bar? I feel so happy when I spend my time in some boutique hotels in London, enjoying food in good fish restaurants in Paris and bars on the seaside and looking at the sunset with a glass of wine. I must add a special hotel for me, the Dylan hotel in Amsterdam, where I realized the biggest gift I received in my life was arriving and my life wouldn’t be the same anymore. The place that gives you the most energy? Rome, the city where I live. I love it. Despite its several defects, it remains a very sensual city, able to provide big emotions for me.

ADAM WHITE DIRECTOR - FACTORY DESIGN

What projects are you currently working on?

Two: What might be available tomorrow that is just a dream today.

Many, but sadly all confidential, as is the way with aviation.

Three: What will have changed for the passengers in 4 years time at launch.

What projects have you recently completed?

Four: Consider solutions that have wit as well as technical excellence.

Etihad A380 and B787 cabin design, Four Seasons B757 interior.

Five: Innovation: now is the time…

What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Etihad, TAG Aviation, Four Seasons and many talented suppliers. Where do you feel aviation design is going in terms of interior schemes? To infinity, and beyond... Well, not quite, but I think I can confidently say that the days of customising a seat and doing a trim and finish overhaul being satisfactory are over. That having been said, it takes deep pockets to change an entire cabin interior, but as airlines pressurise aircraft and equipment makers to be ever more innovative, they have to respond with being ever more flexible; the customer is always right, and as such you cannot differentiate brand with a simple makeover, and an extra inch or two on pitch. Name five key themes to consider when approaching design in 2016 and beyond: One: The clarity of your vision: who exactly are you designing for? What defines them?

What are your favourite recent schemes? Please describe key elements. Etihad A380. At launch, this was and remains the most highly customised cabin interior flying in commercial aviation, and everything we introduced has improved in some way the flying experience for Guests. This effort was egalitarian in that our interest in improving the experience across all classes was echoed by a supportive client and we brought innovation into the aircraft at many levels. Whilst we look very hard at improving the flying experience by technical innovations and clever architecture, we like to try and delight people as well. When you walk along the aisle in First Class, the ceiling has lit panels with a pattern designed to suit the modern, Arabic look of the airline. As you walk past, tiny projectors shine the illuminated pattern on you from the ceiling above. The mind is tricked into a sense that the dappled light is from the lit panels, which are an interpretation of the sun flickering through the leaves of a date palm. It really is a delightful moment when you notice it as you walk through.

If you could offer one piece of advice when it comes to design schemes, what would it be? Always, always, always try to think of something that hasn’t been done before, and back it up with a way to do it now. What products and services could you not live without when designing? Obviously my partners and company, peopled by amazing talent and computers I can’t even turn on, let alone operate. But for myself, a little time out to think and a pen to make scribbly sketches with. As a designer please tell us the following: The place that gives you most inspiration: When I am not walking around a city like London, it would be the internet where a virtual walk is always on offer, around pretty much most things. The place you can relax most: On a plane. Or riding a motorcycle. Or building an engine. Most inspirational design scheme or project you have seen or visited in recent times: A sculpture by David Cerny in Prague, of Franz Kafka’s head. This might seem abstract but look at it on Youtube and look at the simple narrative. It has enormous clarity in both its concept and in its implementation. All 45 tons of it. Any final thoughts? The world of aircraft cabin interior design has changed significantly in the past decade as a result of commercial pressures and is pretty much the most exciting place to work now. It keeps us busy and happy, a lucky place to be. However we would quite like to do a luxury yacht if there are any takers?

BARBARA AMERIO OWNER - AMER YACHTS

Tell us a little about your background (education, experience etc.). Born in Sanremo, a nice town close to the French border in a strategic touristic area. After linguistic and nautical studies I started my work experience very young in the Permare owned by my family where I grew up and built my position through different disciplines. Essentially specialized in brokerage, and international sales. Now as co-owner with the other family members of an Italian nautical group called Permare including Amer Yachts super yacht building and after-sale services, owning several shipyards in our region. What projects are you currently working on? We are actually working on a one-off 110’unit built for a Russian client who is a great Amer yachts supporter, as this is the third custom boat made for him. The launching will be for summertime and she will attend the next European boat shows. The third 94’ will be the next launching for an Italian client, we are so proud to create her innovative dream boat. As you can understand, a limited production is only for few lucky customers but this guarantees the best of material and labour and a direct line with the ownership, also dedicated after-sale service is provided. What projects have you recently completed? 2016 for Amer yachts has been very successful we have introduced the Amer Cento Quad, after the previous 94’ Save the Sea. We have been awarded during Cannes boat show at the World Yacht Trophies The Most Innovative Boat of the Year in the category 24-40m and our company has gained the title of one of the

100 excellences of the Made in Italy of the year and later nominated by the Foreign office as Ambassador for the Italian design day.. We can say we are satisfied for all energies spent in this amazing Iconic Amer Cento project. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? All comes from the long research in improving Amer performances at the sea. The latest idea shared with Volvo Penta is adopt their IPS engines in a super yacht and obtain the proof that we can deeply reduce consumptions, air emissions, noise and vibrations granting much interior space and much manoeuvrability. What is extraordinary is that clients and captains have responded so quickly motivating us by their increasing interest and positive reactions. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? Tradition, our business has started in 1973 and now three generations are working together pushed by sea and work passion. Strong and solid group where profits are always re-invested in innovation, flexible and fast in reacting and in adopting futuristic vision about nautical world. Great respect for all our workers and suppliers, only a great team could participate in building in harmony unique boats such Amer Yacht models. Do you have any predictions for upcoming trends/design directions? Different approach in respecting the environment with a research in eco-friendly material and components. Additional

glass surfaces, balconies, stern beach platforms to gain panoramic views and recreational and wellness areas. More and more iconic Made in Italy and Art craft on board. After minimal style, wood is back but more natural treated and sophisticated. Boats will become main houses in the next generations. To live close to the sea is healthy. Designers will work on the same boat layout but adapted for different buyers and different seas. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/ affected your work in recent years. IPS system has changed our nautical life, we proudly were the first and now the challenge doesn’t stop. More and more efficient vessels with high comfort on board to maximize the stay at the sea. Stabilizers, domotics, electronics, fins are still evolving each year and can be a one supplier integrated installation. What do you feel are the biggest challenges the super yacht industry will have to face in the future? Hybrid boats, hydrogen boats, foil boats are the future. But first of all we have to protect and save the sea and teach it to the future generations. Fight against Sea pollution is a real priority. What are your current plans for 2017? This year I’m nominated as Design ambassador for the nautical sector to promote Italian design in Middle east countries. I want to improve the collaboration with Universities and Italian design schools for new projects for students for approaching them to pleasure vessels. I’m in the Ucina Association Board.

ROGER PATRON BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER - RAS COMPLETIONS

Tell us a little about your background (education, experience etc.). Business Development Manager, B.Eng educated at Kingston University of London, impressive resume with over 20 years’ experience working in the aviation industry under companies like A.I.R., Aviation Furnishings Limited, and McCarthy Interiors Limited. What projects are you currently working on? Currently RAS is working on a large number of projects including full cabin refurbishment and modifications for VVIP Fokker 70’s, Bombardier Challenger 605, Falcon 2000 and Global Express. What projects have you recently completed? RAS Interiors refurbishment and modification capabilities are always in high demand as we dedicate all facets of the company into each project. Our recently completed projects include; full cabin design and modification of a major air charter company’s Gulfstream G550, a privately owned Learjet 60 as well as a VIP A330 aircraft. What companies have you worked with for the above projects? Some companies we have completed projects for previously include; Air Tanker, Gulfstream, Harrods Aviation, Jet Aviation and Heli One. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? RAS Interiors has a deep respect for our clients, not only because they have entrusted us to design and modify their

high end aircraft but because our team would want our projects and self to be valued just as highly. Our capabilities and finished projects reflect this mantra and our attention to detail separates RAS from the rest of the pack.

seats provide an alternative to leasing or hiring a private plane for one off situations that in the past was not available.

Do you have any predictions for upcoming trends/design directions?

My favourite recent scheme completed at RAS has to be our design for a recent Bombardier Challenger 605. When it comes to creating a scheme for these medium sized jets, simplicity and comfort are imperative. An overly complicated scheme detracts from the overall experience of VIP air-travel. On this project we believed a high contrast cabin scheme was best, meaning we would stain all wood trim a very dark colour while making the sidewalls, seats, carpets and other interior components a light tan which better helps you take in and appreciate both the cabin as a whole and the details we put into every piece. The layout of the cabin also provides enough space per the client’s request. When it comes to this project there are two key elements that stand out to me.

The trend we are currently finding is that the split between the amount of clients looking for a refurbishment of their cabin rather than a complete new build will rise continually year by year. In 2016 we were quite heavy in new builds but we predict the requests for refurbishments will rise over the next few years. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/ affected your work in recent years. RAS Interiors experiments with lacquer systems have helped us develop a premier system to ensure a perfect finish to all wood surfaces in the aircraft cabin. Over the past five years we have established what we believe to be the best solution for smart local repairs and complete woodwork refurbishments within the VIP aircraft industry. What do you feel are the biggest challenges the private aviation industry will have to face in the future? In my opinion the private aviation industry currently is quite strong and seems to be on the rise from what I have experienced over the last 5 years. However I do see possible challenges in the competition between the private aviation industry and the services provided now by large airlines like Emirates. Their ‘apartment’ cabins and ultra first class

What are your favourite recent schemes please describe key elements?

1. The seats we designed and crafted at our facilities are the closest to perfection that an upholstery specialist can come to. Composed of the finest leather in the market and excellently stitched together these lay-flat VVIP leather seats are not only beautiful but the most comfortable seats I’ve ever sat in. 2. Our woodwork of the folding leaf and pull-out tables on the aircraft allow for ample space to work and go about business one minute and lay back to relax the next. It is important for us to design an interior to suit all needs of our clients as these aircraft are multi-faceted. This is why we plan for all possible needs within the aircraft and implement those requests in a simple and fluid way.

As yacht interior design now sets standards that match its residential equivalent, the need for those custom styled interiors to remain marine unique does not alter. of the space, so incorporating hidden storage compartments into the main salon furniture is a very efficient design solution. One such example is the incorporation of Grafton Furniture into an interior scheme by Ari Loar Interiors. Ari uses neutral fabrics with contrasting wood that is aesthetically soft and soothing. If the incredible views from the port and starboard windows to the open seas were removed, the interior could be that of a residential client. In Grafton’s newly renovated design lab, they are able to cater to the designers by providing a place to discuss dimensions, choose elegant and functional textiles, wood species, finishes, and even the customized feel of cushions that provides the perfect, unique interior cruising experience.

The techniques used are the traditional construction methods that date back to the Renaissance, these talented craftsmen are truly modern day artisans. The Ribbon Coffee Table is a sculptural stainless steel and glass design by Sally Sirkin Lewis. Originally the base was drawn in an “M” orientation, however once the prototype was completed, they realized that the fluid curves of the shape would be much better reversed in the “W” position. The mirror-like high polished stainless steel creates reflections of random areas in the room, and due to the openness of the base, it does not impose on the space. It is a true example of the J. TIM GOSLING DIRECTOR AND CREATIVE CAPTAIN - T GOSLING LIMITED.

Which sector do you specialise in? High end residential, high end luxury hotels and super yachts. Is the super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes – the super yacht market accounts for a good 30% of our annual turnover. How long have you worked in this sector? We have worked in this sector for the last 8 years – steadily advancing our foothold in this expanding and exciting arena. What other sectors do you work in? The high end residential is the main part of our market. We work with designers, architects or directly with clients. If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/participation in these projects. I am part of every single project – I do however have a brilliant team and my two Design Directors, Photis Photi and Phil Sturdy are remarkably talented. Lord Browne, (former CEO of British Petroleum) said to me once ‘Always surround yourself with people who are even more talented that you – always employ the best’ – sage advice. I’ve never forgotten that and it’s such a privilege to work with them every day. We have just finished an amazing Palazzo for Lord Browne on the Grand Canal – designing the furniture, library and the architectural interior. We are currently working on creating some extraordinary, state of the art carbon fibre pieces for the exterior of yachts, alongside some stunning straw marquetry pieces of furniture.

Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. I start off every discussion with a client with a blank sheet of watercolour paper and an artist roll of pencils – from hb to 8b, where the lead basically melts in to the paper. This helps to create something visual that connects my ideas with what the client wants. You have to give birth to the idea together – and the only way to do that is to sketch. Thankfully I sketch and draw very fast, sometimes even upside down if I’m having to face a client – it is such a visual and efficient way to then discuss what they mean by ‘tall’ or ‘not too decorative’. Each one of us has different terminology – but visually looking at a drawing and design while you are talking gives you the ability to ensure you are on the same page. My team then work on creating solid work modelling of the pieces and rooms which are sent to the workshop so we can talk over its creation. The prices are basically worked from how long it will take a craftsman to make a piece – the materials don’t influence it in the same way they did 200 years ago, when it was the largest part of a design expense. The quotes having been discussed and accepted by the client the piece then gets a technical drawing, which is incredibly detailed – and then it is made from approval of these technicals. I can put my hand on my heart at the very beginning of this when sketching with the client and say – it will be delivered four months from now on a Tuesday afternoon between 4 and 5 pm and it will be perfect.

What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? The process I work with – the fact that we always go well and truly beyond expectations and that the craftsmanship is of museum standard work. Working within the super yacht/Aviation sector must be different than domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? It’s different only from the technical issues of humidity, sunlight and adverse weather constraints or weight – the expectation is the same as it would be at with your home. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced/affected your work in recent years. Carbon fibre, 3D printing in ceramic powders and bronze powders – laser technology is really increasing and it means you can achieve some really exciting new things with historic and traditional materials. I’m influenced by so many things – ballet, theatre, music – seeing different cultures and their precious creativity first hand – this all has a profound effect on my work and my life view. What are your current plans for 2017? Keep calm and to continue striving to be the best – the world is changing so fast – it has so much anxiety that I think we are even more privileged to be able to create things of lasting beauty and integrity against this world backdrop.

FRANK SAWKINS Director Czech and Speake Which sector do you specialise in? Bathing – from the hardware of taps and sinks to grooming products and the fragrances we use. Is the super yacht market an integral part of your business/ large percentage of your market? It certainly has been in the past, we have been in the super yacht sector since I first worked with Jon Bannenberg many years ago. We have supplied many of the world’s best yacht builders, Pendennis, De Vries, Blohm and Voss and more. We are seeing a lot of growth in the sector and a resurgence of interest in our products – especially so in classically styled re-fits. How long have you worked in this sector? Since the early 1980’s Which other sectors do you work in?

specific requirements of naval architects we work with. Our customers also tend to be similar – very demanding clients who want the very best in bathroom fittings – that remains the same whether it be on water or terra firma. We need to be sure that our products exceed their requirements in either application. One element which does differ in the marine sector is that of service – we need to be able to provide service and parts anywhere in the world within 48 hours, which we are always willing to do. Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced your work in recent years. The sea change is the internet and the amount of information and support we are able to provide our customers and end users by that means. Again, the increasing size of yachts has narrowed the gap between products for a household application or one on the sea.

CZECH & SPEAKE LONDON The creation of tradition, providing the perfect finishing touches to bathrooms. Czech & Speake has been one of the foremost producers of luxury bathroom and kitchen water fittings for over three decades. Globally recognised as representing the pinnacle of quality due to use of the finest materials – the sleek lines and perfect proportions lend themselves to a wide variety of decorative styles. They are especially well suited to high end marine applications due to their deserved reputation for longevity and reliability, as well as fantastic after sales support and ability to provide technical assistance almost anywhere in the world. While the range is not especially broad in terms of number of styles – it is very deep. All fittings fit in to one of three collections, each comes in a wide variety of finishes and fitting options. This makes them particularly suitable for fitting in a marine environment where space is often at a premium. Wall mounting and concealed fittings ensure ease of arrangement within compact surroundings. In addition to brass ware Czech & Speake also produces beautifully crafted and practically sized ceramic ware and a full range of bathroom accessories. A stunning solid mahogany seat sits atop a lavatory with a compact footprint to suit the most sumptuous of on-board bathroom facilities. The complementary hand basin draws inspiration from classic Italian train furniture and strikes the perfect balance between compact size and usable practicality. www.czechandspeake.com

Primarily high-end residential, but we have also worked on some great projects recently with boutique hoteliers. Working within the super yacht sector must be different than the domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? With the size of modern super yachts there are not the challenges there used to be. We used to have to be very careful with the size of fittings – both in brass and ceramic ware as space and weight was always a significant consideration. For the larger projects nowadays that is less of a concern. However we are also able to provide a degree of customisation and alteration of our products to suit the Luxe et al 73

FINISHING

LASTING FINISH TURNSTYLE DESIGNS Turnstyle Designs, founded in 1992 by Steve Roberts, are regarded as one of the foremost producers of design-led door and cabinet hardware in the world, and has supplied handles to some of the world’s most prestigious yachts and buildings, both private and commercial. Its products are a marriage of machined precision and handmade craftsmanship. One of their latest products, the Woven Scroll, was designed by co-owners Steve and Christina Roberts and made from metal and Amalfine. Amalfine is a proprietary composite blend trademarked by Turnstyle Designs. The finish is

more material-like, and the colour runs throughout the design so unlike a surface finish it cannot wear off. The Woven Scroll is available in three different lengths, 64mm, 128mm and 160mm and the possible options available are the four Amalfine colours of Black Bronze, Cocoa, Alupewt and Silver Bronze, and the eight metal finishes available are Bright Chrome, Satin Nickel, Polished Nickel, Dark Bronze, Polished Brass, Vintage Patina, Vintage Nickel and Fine Antique Brass. The durability of this product makes it ideal for either heavy-use commercial projects or for private clients who wish to maintain the level of finish of a brand new product. As the metal base is solid it is also the perfect solution for refit projects where previous work to the cabinet or doors needs to be discretely hidden. www.turnstyledesigns.com

BEAUTIFUL HARDWARE MANUFACTURED TO PLEASE NANZ We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must learn to sail in high winds.” - Aristotle Onassis NANZ welcomed the challenge when their clients first expressed interest in yacht hardware. Their engineers developed a highly resilient product line that defies challenges posed by ocean air and salt spray. The team created products using non-ferrous brass and stainless steel components that are particularly well-suited for use on the high seas. By combining rare earth magnets and pneumatic springs, NANZ created a patented lock with a latching action and a lever operation that are unimaginably seductive. These exclusive mechanisms are engineered for maintenance-free operation and are appropriate for keeping doors and cabinets secured in the most tenacious of tides. NANZ magnet locks are fully concealed when doors are closed and are 74 Luxe et al

www.nanz.com conveniently non-handed. With adjustable bevel faceplates and modifiable spring tension, the magnet locks appear modern in design, yet historic in appearance. They are an equally perfect fit for both contemporary and traditional projects. To further bolster durability, NANZ provides yacht trim in the strongest available alloys and finishes. They have developed lost-wax foundry methods that allow stainless steel products to be created using the same high-quality tooling that they have refined over decades for their cast brass and bronze components. NANZ also offer a collection of PVD finishes complementing any palette. And of course, all of these products and finishes, which have been so successful for use on superyachts, are equally advantageous for coastal residences. Committed to both smart operation and a high aesthetic, the Nanz Company continues to manufacture hardware designed to please.

SA BAXTER The SA Baxter Mark has become a beacon in the design world, representing a relentless commitment to authenticity and refinement. Each piece of SA Baxter hardware and lighting is a testament to true artistry that’s nourished by tradition, informed by design, and enhanced by the spirit of innovation. THE MARK OF TIMELESS DESIGN Based on the rich history of Gaelic heraldry, the arrow in the SA Baxter Mark represents the metal that is used to produce each statement piece. The chevron above the arrow signifies shelter and the home; and, the shield as a backdrop represents protection and durability for a lifetime. When someone sees the SA Baxter mark on a piece of hardware or lighting they know that it carries a master artisan’s signature, certifying that it meets the highest standards that have been set for it. Now in its second decade, SA Baxter Architectural Hardware was founded and built from the ground up by Scott Baxter, who at the time was building one of the most celebrated estates in the New York area. He found himself searching the globe for window latches that would match the home’s copper clad windows. Unable to find them, he commissioned several trades to have them made for over 100 windows. Inspired by the vivid and lifelike sculptures of Rodin and Francesco Di Giorgio Martini, Scott Baxter spent years studying their process. Laboriously, endlessly, he obsessed about how to

ABOVE THE ORDINARY, INTO EXTRAORDINARY Though more laborious than other available methods, Scott Baxter knew that lost-wax casting would allow for complete design flexibility and control over quality. Each piece begins with a proprietary lost-wax casting process. Wax positives of hardware and lighting are created with details hand-carved and sculpted by master artisans. This allows for unlimited attention

bring the details exhibited in the best examples of sculptural work into the fine hardware market. Scott spent the next two years creating a proprietary process of mold making lost-wax casting for hardware and blending with the absolute latest in green technology. From scratch, Scott began to create the building blocks of what would become SA Baxter’s Foundry and Atelier, located in New York’s Hudson Valley. He sought out local artisans, designers, architects, craftsmen, jewelry makers, engineers, and artists to work for him. Together, they created dazzling collections of unparalleled architectural hardware: from doorknobs and knockers to hinges and drawer pulls -- and, of course, window latches, too. Opening a showroom in the New York Design Center, SA Baxter’s exquisite hardware came to market where it was met with praise. SA Baxter hardware began to adorn the finest and most exclusive residences, hotels, yachts and commercial spaces worldwide. Quickly, the design world stood up and took note of the original designs and stunning details expressed in each piece of SA Baxter hardware. They have since gone on to open another showroom in London’s Design Centre in Chelsea Harbour, and to produce further famed hardware lines, project ready hardware, solid bronze flooring, lighting, and so much more.

to detail, craftsmanship, and innovation. These intricate wax positives are then assembled onto a wax tree, a structure used to produce multiple hardware parts at once. Wax trees are then encased in several layers of slurry material, a ceramic-like mixture that creates the mold for the metal hardware parts. After the slurry material has dried and hardened around the wax, the tree is fired and the wax parts melt away and are “lost,” leaving a hollow cavity in the slurry material referred to as a “shell.” Then, molten eco-brass, bronze, or white bronze ingots are heated to the degree of

molten lava and poured into the crust shell where it cools and hardens. When the crust is broken away what’s left is an exact metal copy of the earlier artisan-made wax form. The unveiled metal piece is then ready for machining, which is part of the finishing process, and ensures the product’s flawless operation. Each piece of hardware and lighting is then hand-finished with over 200 different finishing options, according to client specifications. Finally, after inspection of the final product a master artisan stamps it with the SA Baxter Mark, guaranteeing its authenticity and superior quality.

Clients can also walk into a showroom with an idea for a custom piece, and have a twodimensional picture of it the following day. A day later, they can hold a 3D prototype

in their hands, and weeks later have a finished art piece ready for installation. Whether it’s altering size and shape, incorporating a logo or crest, or re-creating a historical design, SA Baxter gives clients unparalleled freedom and flexibility over their hardware and lighting.

reawakening of the avant-garde. It represents an intricate symphony of artistry and technique that SA Baxter’s master artisans craft every day. SA Baxter labors to reinvent traditional forms, and to take the world by storm with

its inventive, original designs. Not just architectural details, when the SA Baxter Mark is stamped into a product, it begs for something new: a change in what the world can expect from hardware, lighting, and more.

STEPHEN ROBERTS MANAGING DIRECTOR

CHRISTINA ROBERTS

TURNSTYLE DESIGNS LTD

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Which sector do you specialise in?: Design led Architectural and cabinet hardware. Is the super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? Yes, currently around 35% of turnover. How long have you worked in this sector?: Around 18 years. What other sectors do you work in? Residential, Hospitality, Furniture and Kitchen. If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/ participation in these projects. (SR) Unfortunately we have confidentiality clauses with most of our clients, we have worked on some really fascinating projects but I cannot give names of yards or yacht names. A recent commission involved designing and manufacturing a complete suite of hardware including specialist locks and latches for the furniture. French designer, USA yard, based on one of our existing door lever designs, the designer extended the design to include everything from fiddle rails to push button knobs. Using machined brass, mother of pearl, leather and some timber details too. (CR ) My involvement on the whole is less project based as I tend to work more on new product within the core range for TD. However I did enjoy contributing toward a fairly recent project here in North Devon. The owners of a stunning period property together with their architect commissioned TD to come up with lever handles that would complement its Elizabethan interior. Together with the help of local craftsmen, using a combination of amalfine and antiqued brass we were able to create a beautiful handle that was a perfect addition to this 17th century house. Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable and how you work as a team: (SR) Turnstyle has three layers of product and design it offers. Firstly our catalogue range of products, which consists of over 40,000 options of design, material, size and finish. Our new website currently shows over 20,000 different renders and photos, clients can select and configure their own combination of materials. If one cannot find what one is looking for from the catalogue range, then we offer a Modify service, using existing component parts, clients can then modify by size, finish or grip design. Finally, we also offer a complete Tailored service, where we will work with a client to develop their design or an interpretation of what they are looking for. We work in so many different materials and use so many processes, it is rare for us to turn away a design because we cannot manufacture it. For our own catalogue products, Christina and myself work very closely together to discuss and

78 Luxe et al

develop new concepts, ideas and products, these are then prototyped, shared with staff, and if they are good enough will be tested at the many exhibitions we show at throughout the year for client feedback. Turnstyle products are very much a marriage of machined precision and hand made craftsmanship. All our leatherwork is hand stitched and bonded to specifically machined metal work designed to accommodate the leather both functionally and aesthetically. Our production teams work together with each element of manufacturing being quality controlled by those teams before being passed on for the next process. Most products will go through at least eight different pairs of hands before final checking and packing, with every member of staff checking not only their own work but the previous teams work, this ensures that Turnstyle’s returns quota is next to zero. (CR) Personally my main focus is geared towards the September Shows which tends to result in product being released slowly though out the year. This allows us time to test and make hard decisions about what we will and will not show. In the first instance Steve and I will discuss numerous thoughts and ideas, current influences and general directions. Then starting with a fairly weighty series of first sketches, we can choose which designs we wish to fine tune into more workable drawings. These are then worked up into cad technical drawings from which masters can be created in preparation for casting and finishing. One always has to be very mindful of production costs and engineering possibilities. Steve has such an extensive understanding of what can and can’t be made, consequently my ideas have to be reigned in at times! But we both agree it is good to push the boundaries, which is after all the very foundation of our business. The use of amalfine and leather in door hardware was a first for TD. No one had worked in these materials before and it was a very big and bold step for Steve as he was unsure as to the suitability of both. Time has proven that these two materials are wonderfully resilient and combined produce uniquely beautiful door hardware. Can you explain how your design process has changed over the past 25 years? (SR) When we first started to design, everything was on paper, with masters and prototypes being made of wood or clay. Over the years we have brought in technology where we see it benefiting us. The designs are still hand drawn by Christina, but they would then be modelled on CAD, tweaked to improve and fine tune, then sent off for 3D prototyping. We do still work with artists to

produce some of our masters, but also combine with modern technology when required. (CR) I have only been involved in the design side of the business for the last ten years so Steve was flying solo for a large part of the companies defining years creating and designing with the help of local craftsmen and women. Some of our best sellers were drawn on the back of an envelope in far less time than we have today. How he managed to design, build the business with all that that requires and then go to market is quite frankly beyond me. But I guess it was only a matter of time before I jumped in on the design side of the business as I firmly believe that the shared process of design and development of ideas produces the best results. It is so useful to be able to bounce ideas off one another creatively and more importantly it is how most design based companies work. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? (SR) Style and materials. Turnstyle has developed its own distinctive style over the years, which sits very comfortably between contemporary and traditional, depending on the designs and finishes our handles work very well in both camps. Our signature materials are leather (we were the first company to start producing leather handles, now much copied ) and Amalfine™, our proprietary range of composites. We also love custom work and have a dedicated department to help clients realise their own designs. (CR) From a design perspective I feel it is our ability to mix and apply such a beautiful and varied combination of materials, all of which are engineered to such a very high standard that sets us apart. Our door hardware has a unique look and feel because of the variations that we bring to the design process and we have managed over the years to build up and stay true to some of the design combinations that are so distinctly Turnstyle. Working within the super yacht/ aviation sector must be different than domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? (SR) The super yacht industry is a fantastic industry to be involved in, yes it is very different in many ways to domestic and commercial markets, clients and designers are quite rightly very demanding in both levels of service and quality of the product and how it is delivered. What a handle has to do on a yacht is far more demanding than on a house, for a sailing yacht weight may be an important factor for example. All cabinet handles need to operate latches so cupboards stay shut in stormy seas, charter yachts can be heavily used so durability is also very important. Driving that level of demand only makes us a better company, from which the other industries benefit from.

FH LAMBERT FH Lambert Ltd are an award winning high-end company that specialise in Decorative Precious Metal Plating for both the Yacht and Aviation sectors. They apply a variety of luxurious and high standard finishes to decor trims, buckles, surrounds, lights, air gushers, cup holders and much more. The business has been running for over 50 years and has been operating within the Yacht and Aviation sectors for the last 15 years. They have provided a multitude of finishes for Private Jets, First Class Cabin Interiors and Super Yachts for some of the world’s leading Airlines and even royalty.

THE BACKGROUND FH Lambert Ltd was founded in 1963 as a family-run business, to which they remain true to this day. Whilst originally working within the jewellery and watch trade, the company’s founder Frank Henry Lambert made the decision to shift the company’s focus to the Aviation and Yacht industries and have since established themselves as world-renowned specialists in decorative metal plating.

In lieu of their success, FH Lambert have since undergone a business expansion and branched out into a new and larger purpose built facility in 2011, which is said to contain the largest silver plating tank alongside the greatest variety of precious metal plating tanks in all of Europe and the UK.

THE WORK

For some companies, working with the super yacht/Aviation sectors can prove quite a unique challenge due to the numerous impacting factors of working with products that will operate on the sea or in the air. For FH Lambert however, they hold a much much simpler view, to deliver prestigious luxury products irrespective of the market consistently and passionately.

FH Lambert are a recognised AS 9100 accredited company with a strong ethos of continual self-improvement alongside an adherence to perfection. One such example of this methodology is the rigid routines they undergo, such as carefully inspecting every article for any defects and potential failures at each stage of processing to ensure the highest standards possible throughout on all their projects.

THE CHALLENGES FH Lambert feel the biggest challenge from within the aviation market comes from the completion houses, in particular the turnaround requirements for aircraft on ground (AOG), however for them the satisfaction of completing on schedule and to the high standards

Whilst decorative metal plating can certainly be classed as a niche sector, there are an array of competitors situated globally that contest FH Lambert’s strong position. When asked what FH Lambert felt separated them from their competitors, they commented:

within which they have seen a similar style and taste being continually used. They’ve identified that simple yet elegant types of design that utilise rich and textured focal points are the current luxury trend for interiors. is notoriously difficult to penetrate. FH Lambert have not just achieved this, but have also established themselves in the sector as one of the key global suppliers for decorative plating, operating at the very top end of the market providing a combination of efficiency, practicality and beauty. The future looks bright for FH Lambert in 2017 and beyond as they further solidify their position with top yacht and aviation designers.

JOHN KUJAWA Founder and President Lumitec

Which sector do you specialise in? Today the majority of our revenue comes from the design and manufacture of bespoke and stocked Marine LED Luminaires, including interior, deck, specialty, and underwater. However since inception we’ve considered Lumitec a product development company first and foremost. This means that we are always focused on strengthening our technical foundation, broadening our set of relevant skills, and deepening our on-site tools and resources. Today, by design, we are very well equipped to understand the technical needs of a customer, and to leverage our deep resources to quickly and efficiently deliver a high performance, feature-rich, long-lasting solution. As a result our ‘typical’ customer is more defined by their needs than by conventional market segments. Is the super yacht/ aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? The super yacht segment of our business is rapidly growing, and is a natural growth path for the success we’ve enjoyed with custom and semi-custom builders in the sport yacht and sportfish market. We’ve been consulted by several design firms seeking our expertise in lighting design and integration with today’s ever more sophisticated lighting control systems. How long have you worked in this sector? Lumitec has been involved in the design and manufacture of lighting for marine applications for about 10 years. In total our engineering team, currently numbering 12, has more than 50 years’ combined experience in the core technologies.

88 Luxe et al

What other sectors do you work in? We have a strong relationship with one of the world’s largest manufacturers of luxury coaches, Liberty Coach. We supply them with several interior and exterior luminaires custom designed for the specific needs of their highly refined customer base. We also leverage our deep technical expertise for certain military customers. For them we’ve engineered and delivered illumination products designed specifically to work effectively with night vision technologies. Similarly we’ve had strong successes in specialty industrial and terrestrial-vehicle applications. In short, whenever a user has a need for a luminaire engineered for any extreme environment, which delivers exceptional performance, reliability, usability, and aesthetic appeal we find an excellent fit for our core competencies. Please talk us through your process of design, build and application for your products, where applicable. Our design process is fast paced but laborious, iterative, handson, sometimes dirty, sometimes indirect, but always exciting. Our team truly excels in this area. We take a very holistic design approach, and in most cases everything is evolved concurrently mechanicals, thermals, mounting, circuitry, optics, software, etc. This enables us to truly arrive at an optimal overall solution, instead of a set of optimized features. For example, if we were to first design around thermal performance and then do the industrial design, we’d likely compromise the aesthetics of the luminaire. Considering thermals last would lead to diminished output. Focusing only on output and thermals however typically leads to very industrial looking products. It is a continuous balancing act like a great recipe to ensure that there is just enough of everything but not too much of anything.

Which sector do you specialise in? For business jets, Rockwell Collins specializes in cabin management and entertainment systems, wireless content distribution and high-speed Internet connectivity. In more simple terms, I try to make your aircraft experience extraordinary. A seamless blend between your home on the ground or in the sky. Is the Aviation market an integral part of your business/ large percentage of your market? Rockwell Collins serves many markets in aviation and defence, but I am entirely focused on the business aviation market. This spans everything from smaller corporate aircraft to large commercial aircraft with living space similar in size, look, and feel of a home. How long have you worked in this sector? Ten plus years in Aerospace. I started with Rockwell Collins after spending time in the Marines as an Infantry Officer. I have worked in different sectors during my time with the company, but I find the business I run now the most interesting in terms of new, relatable technologies. What projects have you worked on recently? My role is to identify and structure business opportunities, put the right team in place, and help clear the way for them to execute. Right now I’m looking at executing a strategy to expand into an adjacent market. It’s not a market my business is familiar with, so being able to interact with customers and identify gaps in their current aircraft experiences is exciting.

Director, Business Jet Cabin Solutions Rockwell Collins

ROCKWELL COLLINS - VENUE™ CABIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Working within the super yacht/aviation sector must be different than the domestic and commercial markets, have you found this to be the case? Yes, but every market has shared and unique characteristics with others. The key is to think about how people want to interact with our systems on these aircraft as part of their daily lives. We know they want it to be intuitive, fully integrated with their personal devices, and deliver the services they have in their home. Breaking the problem down with this type of thinking is exactly the mindset that allows us to identify key design characteristics that correlate directly to the user experience and expectation.

Many business-jet owners are choosing to retain their aircraft longer and are considering updating elements such as the cabin interior. This can highlight obsolescence issues with their cabin management system.

Please describe any relevant technological advancements that may have influenced your work in recent years. Not one specifically, but the overall speed of technological advancement of personal devices and how people interact with the world through them is a big driver. Anticipation of this speed of change drove us to develop a system design with the flexibility to accommodate this rapid turnover and advancement of devices and technologies.

Rockwell Collins’ phased approach for upgrading from older content management systems to Venue streamlines the transition. All while minimizing the impact to the aircraft’s structure and interior.

Any trends/design directions moving forward... The trends in the business jet cabin market mirror the trends being seen on the ground and in your home. Increased proliferation of connectivity systems, at higher speeds and lower costs, are opening up opportunities to increase the entertainment and productivity capabilities on the aircraft. Standard communication protocols are allowing for more integration between personal devices and our systems. We’re consistently evaluating the latest consumer technologies; to anticipate what we think will mature and be applicable in our market space.

www.rockwellcollins.com

Technology continues to evolve, and older cabin management systems cannot keep up. Business aircraft owners need a cabin management system that can meet today’s requirements but also advance at the speed of technology. The Venue™ cabin management system can do this and more, with no compromises. That’s because Rockwell Collins is not only investing in the hardware, but also in the future of in-flight capability and connectivity. With superb design, Venue and their Stage™ content service deliver an exceptional experience to the aircraft cabin with rich content options for entertainment, news, moving maps, games, magazines and more, to make every flight more enjoyable; complete wireless and wired control of the cabin environment; and connectivity capabilities that bring a seamless, swift and reliable flow of data to and from the aircraft

When it comes to the design, installation and support of a cabin management system, experience matters. Rockwell Collins has maintained a steadfast focus on the aircraft cabin for more than 40 of their 80+ years in aviation. Rockwell Collins know business aircraft – from flight deck to cabin to flight services and support. This experience combines with their drive to continually advance cabin and connectivity technologies, taking the cabin experience to new levels of capability for customers.

Director Marketing & Communication RUAG Switzerland AG, RUAG Aviation

Which sector do you specialise in?

What other sectors do you work in?

The RUAG Group comprises five divisions (Aviation, Aerostructures, Space, Ammotec and Defence), each dedicated to a particular field within aerospace and defence. RUAG Aviation offers customized solutions for business and private aircraft as well as for military aviation customers.

Besides aviation, the RUAG Group is also active in space, aerostructures, cyber security, training and simulation, as well as the law enforcement and defence sector.

RUAG Aviation services aircraft and helicopters throughout their entire life cycle and provides innovative cabin solutions. It is also the manufacturer (OEM) of the Dornier 228, a versatile aircraft for special missions as well as passenger and cargo operations. Is the super yacht/Aviation market an integral part of your business/large percentage of your market? RUAG Aviation has been a leading provider of aviation services to the business and private aviation sector for more than a decade. Serving both business jet and helicopter customers within this market represents part of our core business. It is also one of our three strategic growth areas. In particular, we are investing in our cabin interior business. How long have you worked in this sector? The cabin interior heritage dates actually back into the 1920s, when opulent Dornier flying boats were roaming the world’s skies. RUAG Aviation inherited this legacy when it acquired parts of Fairchild Dornier in 2003. Recent years have seen a marked increase in the importance of activities within in the head-of-state, business and private aviation sectors for RUAG Aviation. Lifecycle support – including cabin interiors – is integral to this.

94 Luxe et al

If able, please give details of your recent interesting projects and your direct involvement/ participation in these projects. We recently worked on a project involving a Bombardier Challenger CL604. It was coming up for its 192-month heavy maintenance check – and the customer also wanted to update the cabin interior, which was beginning to look dated. We were able to perform the heavy maintenance check, resolve all the technical issues it revealed, and completely refit the cabin with new carpets, soft furnishings and leather upholstery, all within just 10-weeks. The customer was delighted with the results and the new brighter feel of his aircraft cabin. Because RUAG Aviation provides a one-stop shop covering the full gamut of aviation services, we can carry out multiple jobs within a single downtime. The result – as in this case – is that the customer saves money and any impact on his operations is kept to an absolute minimum. An exciting ongoing project is the constant expansion of our service portfolio. It allows us to enhance our support of existing customers, but it also provides an opportunity to build strong relationships with new partners and brand new customers. One of our most recent additions was the Gulfstream G550. What do you feel separates you as a company from your competitors? We believe that partnering with strong organisations produces the best results for our customers, for our partners and for ourselves: hence our company motto, “Together ahead.”

RUAG AVIATION 4G-connectivity experience for helicopter passengers. Connectivity is a standard today. Discerning customers expect to stay connected independent from where they are. It must be easy accessible and with the same speed they enjoy in their home or office – even when they are in the air. With the new helicopter cabin 4G LTE connectivity solution from RUAG Aviation, customers benefit from levels of smartphone connectivity to rival those on the ground – at an affordable cost. Instant messaging, video calling, full social media interaction, live streaming and fast Internet searches are all at the user’s fingertips for the duration of a flight. Working with ground-based 4G LTE networks via a dedicated externally mounted aerial specially design for helicopters; the system interfaces with an on-board router to deliver seamless high-speed WIFI Internet connectivity during overland flights – even in remote and mountainous areas. Traditionally, helicopter cabin interior connectivity has relied on expensive, bulky and cumbersome SATCOM systems. With the new 4G LTE solution from RUAG Aviation, you can experience connectivity with twice the speed and reliability – at a significantly lower operating cost. www.ruag.com

Exquisite custom-made accessories including tissue boxes and trays, wastepaper baskets and pen holders are the finishing touches that will give all cabins a personal touch. Using unique and rare surfaces such as shell, shagreen, parchment, Simon Orrell Designs has a reputation for creating beautiful contemporary pieces from materials that other craftsmen find challenging. ‘Our clients are very excited by our new collections of shell accessories – kabebe, black lip, mother of pearl, hammershell, tiger brown lip and cowrie to name just a few. Shell offers an iridescence that makes it very attractive and opulent, but also offers variety since different shells lend themselves to different treatments,’ explains Simon. ‘Cowrie, for example, can look spotted like a leopard – which is one effect – but sand it flat and the surface

Black lip shell is very exotic and sophisticated; we recently provided half a dozen tissue boxes for a super yacht in this rich, masculine finish. Another favourite finish with the marine world is shagreen, the skin of a ray, which is elegantly textured in its natural form, but can also be dyed to suit a cabin’s decorative scheme.

We have seen a higher demand in the advancement of technology use onboard the planes, which we are successfully integrating into our product line. What are your current plans for 2017? We recently opened a new plant in Savannah Georgia, where we will be able to manufacture most of our products for our US based customers. Do you have any predictions for upcoming trends/design directions? There seems to be a demand for functional living spaces within the cabin, a less of a business-like atmosphere. We see this trend continuing with the addition of high end home comforts being added through the living areas.

PRECISION ENGINEERED CABIN INTERIORS Montreal-based MSB Design, a Sogeclair Aerospace company, is a precision engineering business which has built a reputation for quality, expertise, and clever design. The product range includes Hi-Lo tables, crystal, china and flatware inserts, pre-engineered cabin monuments and tailored stowage items for personal devices, for business aviation aircraft of all sizes. The current Hi-Lo table portfolio offers over twenty-five versions each with different features. Many incorporate slim pedestals, stylish floor fittings and optional shrouds to change the shape from square to an elegant oval. The tables, which are highly robust as well as functional, are available in manual and electric options. The push of a single button can convert the table from a low-level coffee table format to high level dining table option, whilst the electric versions, which come with up to four synchronized pedestals for larger dining surfaces can be operated by Bluetooth. MSB Design has also created a stowage solution that ensures valuable dining ware, pieces of art and other valuables are kept secure to prevent items becoming damaged and reducing noise during flight. Made of lightweight but incredibly strong, high density foam each stowage piece is laser cut to perfectly match the contours and shapes of the items to be stowed. The products can be finished to reflect corporate colours, logos, cabin design or company branding, whilst a range of aluminum and transparent inserts are also available for a more contemporary look. www.msbexpertise.com

Luxe et al 105

Piaggio Aerospace has the proud position of having brought into production the fastest twin turboprop on the market. Continuing the success of the Italianbuilt Piaggio Avanti II twin turboprop, the new version, Piaggio Avanti EVO has an improved performance with the enviable environmental and economic advantages of a reduction in fuel and noise. This evolved design has created one of the most cost effective aircraft to run in its sector. The improvements are also found in its increased range, now capable of flights up to 1,980 miles, reaching speeds of up to 460 mph. These improvements are achieved in the main by new winglets which create a lower drag profile, and five blade Hartzell scimitar propellers for increased efficiency. These propellers also have the much sought after effect of reducing noise both in the cabin by 20% and externally by 68%. The new design has also improved the performance of faster climb ability. Anti-skid brakes and digital steering are also new additional improvements. Improved performance along with the uniquely distinct external design of the rear mounted turboprop engines are matched in their splendour by the VIP interior design of the spacious cabin. With dimensions unexpected for the turboprop – 5 feet 9 inches high and 6 feet wide – the aircraft is capable of carrying as many as nine passengers. The consideration for the quality of the passenger experience has been paramount in this design. The cabin has been pressurised to maintain sealevel pressure until the aircraft reaches 24,000 feet. The VIP seats have been designed by Icaobucci HF and finished in leather from Poltrona Frau. Each passenger has control over their airconditioning and lighting options within their own personal space. The Piaggio Avanti Evo is the third generation model of Piaggio’s flagship model; its debut in 1990 signified the start of Piaggio’s significant and continued contribution to the luxury jet market, and specifically a jet with the versatility of a turboprop.

THE RESULT IS A FAST, MODERN, LIGHT YACHT THAT SAILS WITH EASE AND PURPOSE.

Yachting Developments, the New Zealand based international award winning builder of composite yachts have launched their latest vessel, the 33.8m Cygnus Montanus. The beautiful lifting keel ocean going sloop was designed by German Frers of Frers Naval Architecture. The interior design was completed by Adam Lay Studio. Front and centre of the creation of this magnificent boat were the owners. They are very experienced sailors who relish in the lengthy voyages on the open sea. Their joy of sailing may be in fact greater than their joy of arrival at the destination, and with this passion they heavily influenced and shaped the design process. It was paramount that the handling of this boat be easy with all on board capable of playing an active role, and that to complement their efforts only a small crew would be required. The result is a fast, modern, light yacht that sails with ease and purpose. Whilst achieving this great ocean going ability the interiors of the yacht have been designed for sumptuous luxury, and accommodate the owner’s family of equally avid sailors. Cygnus Montanus has the immense capacity to accommodate 24, which gives an indication of the incredible living space which is fully utilised even with a regular guest list of only eight. The full beam owner’s cabin is located aft and has a king-size bed which is slightly off-set to make space for a seating area with a small sofa and a desk. The cabin also benefits from a dressing room and bathroom with twin basins and shower. The three guest cabins have Pullmans and en-suite bathrooms. The interiors of these cabins not only reflect the owner’s current living requirements but are decorated to encapsulate the adventures and sailing achievements of the owner’s voyages on their previous yachts.

Adam Lay Studios have created an elegantly styled, family focused and very personal open plan apartment style interior, in which the magnitude of space from the forward bulkhead to the aft bulkhead can be appreciated. The main living area is open plan and the inclusion and positioning of the skylights bathes the space with natural light. The decor is bright and splashes of vibrant colour are added to the teak and sycamore back drop in the form of fabric panels and paint choices. The two identical crew cabins are located up forward accessed via the galley and crew companionway via a central passageway. The main cooking area and preparation area is located port. Whilst starboard is the laundry which is equipped with full height fridges and freezers. The saloon is spacious and inviting, with portholes, sky-lights and highlevel coach roof windows. There is a bar on the starboard side and dining area for eight people. Light entertainment requirements are serviced by a mounted flat screen TV found in a lounging area and a coffee table engineered by exquisite craftsmanship houses an integrated electric piano. A clean practical deck layout and modern carbon fibre, roller furling boom complete the picture of this stunning yacht. Cygnus Montanus is an absolute credit to Yachting Developments and by association, New Zealand’s marine industry skills. She is a true representative of the way the owner’s vision has been realised by the ‘team’ – designer, builder, interior décor specialist, to create a luxurious, impeccably stylish and sumptuously-appointed super yacht, and the entire process was all timed to meet the owner’s 18month allotted time schedule, an outstanding achievement without compromise, to deliver a truly majestic vessel.

THE WORLD’S LARGEST AND FASTEST ALUMINIUM MOTOR YACHT Silver Fast - Silver Yachts

Luxe et al 117

Silver Fast is the fourth and most recent super yacht built by Australia’s premier luxury yacht builder SILVERYACHTS, owned by Guido Krass. She is the most advanced, eco-fuel efficient vessel in the ground-breaking Silver Series. Designed by Espen Oeino, one of world’s famous yacht designers, SILVER FAST retains the super-sleek contour and unique hull lines of her much-prized predecessors but with a striking new all dark silver paint. At 77 metres (252.6ft) with a top speed of over 27 knots in optimal conditions, Silver Fast is the world’s largest and fastest aluminium motor yacht with conventional propulsion in terms of length to speed ratio. Silver Fast is also the fastest long range cruising yacht – 4,500 nautical miles at 18 knots and 6,000 nautical miles at 14 knots with an already proven capability to effortlessly complete long passages in every sea state. She is capable of crossing the Atlantic at approximately 22 knots cruising speed, which is a recordbreaking performance. The design criteria was to create a boat with exceptional performance, tremendous range and very capable seakeeping. Espen Oeino created a semidisplacement shallow draught design that adopted the lightweight slender concept. A high length:beam ratio has traditionally been the route to high speed which when incorporated with an easily driven hull provides the benefits of greater efficiency and excellent seakeeping. The build process was kept simple – conventional shaftdrive, welldesigned systems and large technical spaces. Silver yachts are subtle, shapely low-profile darts, distinct in their class by being low, narrow and very sleek. Clearly influenced by executive jet aircraft design with a rounded raked fuselage-like superstructure, the all-aluminium construction is simply finished with a single dark shade of metallic silver. The design also achieves a further comparison with aircraft

design with its lightweight properties. The gross tonnage of under 1,000GT is half that of some yachts of comparable length, in part due to the aluminium honeycomb construction of much of the interior, but also because of the paredback beam and height which means there is physically less yacht. Designed by Vain Interiors of Germany, the interior of Silver Fast has a matte finish throughout. With a colour palette of greys and browns and dressed with white framed monochrome prints, accompanied by silver metal painted accent panels, grey coloured mirrors and the natural shine of the silk carpet. All surfaces are chosen to get a nice patina which will become even more beautiful in time. More than using extremely rare materials, the real luxury with this interior are the furniture and details based on the team’s design and perfectly executed by European manufacturers. There is a gentle sense of masculinity in the design. Staircases are clad in stitched mid-grey leather matched by the handrails, and carpets are of grey silk. It has a timeless, inviting, cosy feel décor. There are three levels for guests to enjoy. Four guest cabins are located on the lower deck with three spacious VIP cabins situated up and towards the front, and then the owner’s suite is on the owner’s deck at the front. The main salon is a cool space and features a sliding glass panel that closes off the library from the main space. The sundeck is an ideal, private space. The Jacuzzi comes with a carbon fibre cover it can also be used as a dance floor. This deck also includes a bar, custom fridge and a TV, and there is also a built-in barbeque and additional storage, with seating at the front. There is a horseshoe sofa around two tables. Loose Paola Lenti furniture adds a little flexibility and colour.

IT HAS A TIMELESS, INVITING, COSY FEEL DÉCOR.

The next deck down is entirely for the owner’s use. The master cabin is vast and offers expansive views through the forward windows. An indoor sunpad, accessed up a few steps, sits forward of the berth. To the rear of the deck is the owner’s lounge, with sliding doors opening onto a private terrace. A staircase links to the VIP guest accommodation on the main deck. Eight crew cabins are found on the lower deck, along with the rest of the guest accommodation: four large en suites. Two further crew cabins are located on this lower-deck guest space. A steam room, sauna, massage area and hairdressing station surround an area for exercise. The sloping aft wall, the transom of the yacht, rises to reveal the large teaklaid swim platform complete with more Paola Lenti furniture. The key feature of the design is the long expanse of glass that extends along the majority of the upper deck. When desired, the air-conditioned interior can be exposed to the exterior by retracting the floor-to ceiling windows. This space overlooks a large working deck, which is home to a couple of large tenders, launched and retrieved by crane. Above this deck is another large open space, which can serve as a secondary helideck, while a Jacuzzi is concealed under the mast structure. Silver Fast has benefited significantly from the Guido Krass’ vision and commitment towards achieving constant improvements in the design, build and operation of the vessel. Whatever is required of this yacht, it can deliver: cover distance, cruise slowly, explore off the beaten track, sail into Monaco, entertain friends and family, charter. Silver Fast has been shortlisted for the International Yacht and Aviation Awards 2017 in the category Power Yacht over 60m.
