DESIGN ET AL RECOMMENDS CARBON FIBRE LOUNGE TUB CHAIR BY GOSLING MARINE With an increasing requirement for lightweight and durable interior and exterior furniture, Gosling Marine focuses on pushing the boundaries of the use of carbon fibre. With its unique property of strength-to-weight ratio, resistance to corrosion and maintenance free, carbon fibre is a welcome move forward from the more bulky teak and echoes the key elements of Gosling’s client’s design brief.

BEADED SOFA BY AURUM HOME Aurum Home introduce the Beaded Sofa, a shark tooth back seating with shrinking bubble legs forms a classic juxtaposing timeless tufting with a psychedelic twist. The grey suede sofa with brass beaded legs and tufted high back was designed for placement in any corner of one’s home. The designers wanted it to have a classical feel with tufting and thick sprung padding for extra comfort, however, the suede upholstery makes it a less plush looking option, that is not limited to more casual surroundings.

EARTH BY THE SILK GALLERY In designing the collection for 2017, The Silk Gallery were looking to create high end, luxury fabrics which would not only impart glamour but a sense of calm to the interior. Modern, city living, is busy and often stressful. Modern, technological developments, and skill with manmade products such as faux leathers, and silks, coupled with a lack and high cost of space has made it easy to overlook the natural world when designing interiors. From our very beginnings, humans have been surrounded by and inspired by nature. We lived in caves and used trees, grass, earth and the natural materials from our surroundings to construct our first homes and furnishings. 16 design et al

ZEPHYR BY GEORGE SINGER Zephyr was designed in collaboration with the Berlin-based computer code writing company, Onformative. George Singer managed to create a truly-organic form before building an app in order to position twenty-thousand steel disks in their own unique positions. The designers created an installation which reflects the beauty, energy, and dynamism of the surrounding countryside of St Andrews Bay, Scotland. Inspiration was taken from the rolling hills, the murmurings of starlings, the long grasses blowing in the wind, the enormous cloud formations, and the crashing waves on the rugged coastline.

The Parlare chair is a distinctive design that sets itself apart from most other chair designs by the fact that;

Artwood were commissioned to design the hard floor design of the lecture theatre at The Masterpiece 2016 exhibition, which was designed by Katharine Pooley.

it does not adhere to any traditional form of construction, it uses three apparently unsupported elements that gain their strength through use of a common central point of gravity and that the combination and choice of materials is unusual and rare.

TD Fabrics and Perennials introduce the ‘Dapper’ fabric with the Dragonfly colourway. The Dragonfly colourway is one of the latest additions Perennials have introduced within their ‘Suit Yourself’ Collection. This luxury 2-bedroom apartment positioned in an 1890s brick and stone mansion block situated in Fitzrovia, London has been thoughtfully designed by Louisa Penn Interiors to reflect its location and surrounding buildings; its varied design along with choice of artwork is suggestive of the different cultural elements available in the West End of London. Louisa Penn Interiors have been shortlisted for the City Space – Apartment/ Penthouse Award in the International Design and Architecture Awards 2017. The team were briefed to design and dress the interior of the apartment consisting of an open plan kitchen, sitting and dining room, a master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, and a second bedroom with en-suite bathroom. A luxurious yet comfortable and practical finish was required to reflect the open and spacious nature of the apartment. The colour palette is instantly charming, stylish and comfortable to live with. A calming palette to separate residents from the hustle and bustle of the street below. Fitzrovia is a busy area, so the designers felt it important that the buyer feel a sense of calm on entering the apartment.

table. Furthermore, the juxtaposition of materials, styles and fabrics allows a more creative take on a development apartment; for example, the placing of a contemporary, minimalist dining table alongside 2 midcentury style, ‘statement’ armchairs. The choice of furniture design works well in creating a spacious, comfortable and luxurious feel as per the brief. The different schemes for each room are complemented well by the range of materials used, such as marble, dark timber, velvets and antique brass. The master bedroom is opulent and unisex with a hint of drama. With the second bedroom the design team could be a little bolder as it would not be used day to day. Thought has been given to furniture layout and efficient use of the space available. The lateral, spacious feel of the property has been maintained and even exaggerated in order to give possible buyers a view of the apartment at its full potential.

“ A calming palette

to separate residents from the hustle and bustle of the street below.”

A desk was obviously therefore a necessity and is positioned in the bar window; looking down to the busy street below. Almost all of the pieces of furniture were designed and manufactured bespoke. Upholsters were used to create sofas, armchairs, and dining chairs. A specialist metal worker constructed the coffee table alongside a marble and stone supplier. The coffee table in particular is a real feat of engineering! The master bed headboard and bed is a bespoke design which was built on site. The location of the apartment is reflected in its design. Art work is suggestive of the arts and different cultural elements available as a resident in such a location. The designers also used the project as an opportunity to use upcoming artists and a space for them to showcase their work. Owner and Design Director, Louisa Penn was mindful throughout that she was building a home with evident personality and soul. Through art, artefacts and antiques she gave a real feeling of lifestyle, character and imagination. Furthermore, the budget allocated to art was devised in relation to the value of the property, thus giving real importance to this aspect.

Fabrics and wall coverings throughout are luxurious yet practical, and include a wide range of textures and patterns.

A favourite element of the design for the team was the highly-spec’d bio-ethanol fire in the living space. It gives a datum to the room, focussing the seating area into a central cosy position.

Louisa’s inspirations when approaching the project came from her own childhood experience, she said “I’ve been lucky enough to be surrounded by beautiful things much of my life; a combination of antiques collected by my Mother, and contemporary art collected by my Father. I’ve grown up surrounded by art and my love for it has grown and grown. For me, a house without art is not a home. Art is therefore a huge part of my work, be it for private clients or development projects.”

The copper kitchen was an opportunity to create a bespoke design which really sets the apartment apart from other developments. It’s drama and unpredictability contrasts and complements the white, minimalist dining

Being a small apartment, the designers wanted an area that could be dedicated to work or study. The apartments were popular with overseas students, young professionals and retired couples downsizing their living quarters in London.

She added “When looking around a property, buyers seek an ‘emotional response’ to a property. It’s this feeling that I try to generate through my designs, and putting a greater emphasis on art helps me to do that. Making the house a home.”

Furniture design, was to be contemporary, sophisticated and varied. It was important to achieve the feeling of a real ‘home’, and not simply a ‘developed’ apartment lacking in character and soul. Careful juxtaposition of furniture styles, fabrics and accessories was key in achieving this.

LUXURIOUSLY UNDERSTATED SUSTAINABILITY MEYER DAVIS – PRESIDENTIAL SUITE, 1 HOTEL SOUTH BEACH MIAMI

Located on Miami’s well-known Collins Avenue and stretching a full city block with 600 feet of Atlantic Ocean beach front is luxury ecoresort, 1 Hotel South Beach.

Guests can experience the ocean, sky and sun of South Beach on the private balcony. It is fully furnished, with a lounge seat, table for two with seating and a one-of-a-kind view.

The property offers unparalleled views of the Atlantic Ocean, Miami’s natural paradise Biscayne Bay and Downtown Miami’s everexpanding skyline. Throughout the 426-room hotel, the celebration of elemental nature is evident, from the graceful twist of driftwood furnishings to the ever-present song of the ocean and the abundance of living, natural material that permeates the surrounding area.

The brief called for understated sustainability, “we tried to execute it in a beautiful way that’s not in your face,” Davis explains. White paint makes a serene backdrop for a neutral materials palette based on various types of natural fibre, wood, and stone.

Guest rooms have a soothing colour palette of wood, sand, and ocean tones, a riff on the real versions seen through the windows. Colorado Beetle Kill pine was saved to create headboards and beds are plush and pretty on raised platforms. Organic bed linens, hemp mattresses, and clothes hangers moulded from recycled paper were specified in the design and bedside note pads have disappeared in favour of chalkboards. 1 Hotel South Beach suites have been designed and furnished to look and feel like apartments on the water. Keeping the same reclaimed and repurposed feeling as the guest rooms, suites take the luxury further with thoughtful custom table lamps, comfortable yet effortlessly luxurious fabric choices, and shoes off lived in finishes. Meyer Davis claimed the award for Hotel Suite at the International Hotel & Property Awards 2017, held in Ravello in June, redefining luxury with their eco-conscious design of the Presidential Suite. The 3,500-square-foot Presidential Suite, features two king sleeping cabins and thoughtful touches of wood, fabrics and plants, bringing nature into the living spaces.

Low-key works best, of course, when you can occasionally break away. “Everything is neutral, and then suddenly you have a pop of bright green,” Meyer says, referring to a stunning wall of moss. The marble of a Kelly Wearstler side table offers a blue accent, while a burst of blue is provided courtesy of one of the biggest, best sources there is. “Because of the floor-to-ceiling windows, the Atlantic Ocean is the main element,” Meyer says.

“ Everything is neutral,

“The people who stay here have places around the world, so we needed to create something that’s a departure from what they are accustomed to,” explained Gray Davis, CoOwner of Meyer Davis. “We had fun with it.” The long, rectangular plan of the presidential suite prioritises its private quarters, particularly the bedroom and adjacent sitting area, which get the direct ocean frontage. “You’re just floating above the beach,” said Will Meyer, Co-Owner of Meyer Davis. Even from the shower, there is an oblique view of the waves, a touch intended to give this suite appeal for seen-it-all guests. The space is designed with natural elements and materials and combined with the comforts of a state-of-the-art media room, diningentertaining area and a full open kitchen. “You can really relax and have a good party,” Davis says. “The pool table in the living area definitely helps.” 34 design et al

Elements in rope, more prevalent here than on some sloops, range from a sisal rug in the media room to a twiny composition framed on the wall in the living area. The seat on the living area’s bench and the rugs in the private sitting area are fuzzy cowhide. In the bathroom, a striking, gnarly tamarind-root chair and stump table could make a guest feel like a happy tree-house dweller. Teak, found in other rooms, is sourced mostly from Java, Indonesia, because of its reforestation rules. Every time a tree is cut down, a new one is planted. Adrianna Shamaris, who specializes in organic design, contributed the media room’s teakroot cocktail table.

and then suddenly you have a pop of bright green.” The man-made objects selected recall the natural world. Illuminating the dining table is a handblown “branching bubble” chandelier by Lindsey Adelman Studio. “Lindsey’s approach is lighting as an organic feature, mimicking the way plants grow. It’s really the perfect choice for this room,” Meyer says. And there’s something almost old-fashioned about the private sitting area’s hanging basket seat. It evokes an afternoon in the country, rather than a night of clubbing in Miami Beach. Throughout the hotel materials for construction and furnishings are regional, reclaimed, or repurposed whenever possible, making this project literally a ‘green’ success. Reflecting this narrative throughout the hotel creates an immediate and lasting impact. The environment of 1 Hotel South Beach is casual, easy, and warm. In a celebration of nature and the locales surrounding the properties, and indeed a respect for the conservation of it, this hotel brings the outside into the heart of the indoors.

NEW SEASONS AND NEW DIRECTIONS; FABRICS FORM THE LIFE BLOOD OF ANY SCHEME. WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT THE COLLECTIONS THE DESIGNER ARE ENDORSING

HUDSON BY ATELIER TEXTILES The Hudson fabric is hand-appliqued in a striking geometric design, inspired by the lattice-work of Chippendale but re-worked into a contemporary design. We have chosen a steely silver colour with silver toned applique to emphasise the texture of the finished piece, not just the motifs. This fabric is hand-embellished with applique and embroidery by skilled artisans. The Hudson design is produced on 100% silk and takes up to a week to make this elegant three metre length. It is a careful process to apply layers of fabric on top of each other and the finished piece is a unique creation.

STRIPE – GARDEN COLLECTION BY ALLEGRA HICKS Allegra Hicks and her design team are presenting a printed linen fabric which has been named as STRIPES. This has been designed as part of their Garden Collection. The nature of the design creates a very fluid movement to the fabric making it a very suitable vertical motif for curtains or blinds. It holds a geometric style with an eye, leaning towards the mid-century elegance.

RIVER FABRIC SAFARI COLLECTION BY JAMSPACE UK The River Sunset fabric has been designed as part of Jamspace UK’s Safari Collection, released in April 2016. It is a collection of linen fabrics and wallpapers which celebrates the landscape, flora and fauna of South Africa whilst the manufacturing of the collection is based in Britain. Soft gradations of colour, from subtle greys to vibrant greens and yellows, juxtaposed against the brightly coloured painterly brush strokes and hand drawn flora and fauna define the new safari collection. Inspired by the stunning landscapes of South Africa, the new collection of natural linens and wallpapers bring together beautifully rendered imagery and textures. The river sunset fabric is bolder in its painterly texture, printed in bright yellows and greens as well as subtle greys. The fabric is characterised by tonal variations and is a celebration of the unique quality of digital printing, which allows for revealing the painterly effect of hand painted fabric designs as well as adaptability where the colour can be customised to fit any colour scheme. The designer’s favourite aspect is the textural variation of the fabric. The rich textural feel of the patterns along with the natural variations of tone and colour makes this collection very versatile in its use. The fact that this fabric is digitally printed, makes it possible to customise the colour tones to suit any interior environment. The process started by a trip to South Africa and a notebook. The inspiration then was consolidated into a collection and then the hand drawing and painting process was initiated in the studio. The designs were scanned, rendered in different repeats and colourways, then sent to the printers.

Situated in a prime location in Knightsbridge, this Grade II listed home has undergone a complete refurbishment that carefully combines English heritage with contemporary elements. Built in the 1800s, this five-storey property is an important piece of London’s history, and a beautiful example of Victorian architecture. Following the success of JHR Interiors previous work with the client, they were approached again to create the interiors for this stunning and well-proportioned six-bedroom townhouse in London.

quite personalised. However, the base colours and finishes of each room are all coherent and work together throughout the house. Colour schemes and finishes were influenced by the Art Deco elements found in the surrounding area and antique brass was selected for the furniture and joinery details throughout the house.

“ touch of femininity.”

The client required a complete turnkey furnishing and styling of the property ready for their return in the summer. For JHR Interiors, the key aspect of the project was to retain the listed architectural features. Using traditional architectural details, they achieved the perfect compromise with the contemporary design of the build-in joinery. JHR interiors was established in 2011 by Badrieh Johari, specialising in high-end residential and commercial projects in the UK and worldwide. JHR strive to bring their client’s vision to life by offering a highly personalised service and building a strong client relationship. Their talented team work closely with architects and contractors ensuring projects are delivered on time and in budget. “We aim to create innovative and unique designs tailored to every client’s individual need, taking into consideration the relationship between the architectural context and the designed interiors”, explains Badrieh. JHR have had a wealth of experience working on high-end luxurious private residential projects within the Kensington area. They were confident that they would be able to deliver a new home to the client’s expectation. The challenge was to find the right balance between English heritage and modern home living that people desire nowadays, especially in this famous metropolitan city. The design focus therefore, was to incorporate all the traditional architectural elements in the house with an approach of classic modern furnishings. Each room was designed with a particular colour scheme to suit each family member in the house making the individual spaces

48 design et al

Offering a comprehensive design service from concept to completion, JHR pride themselves on sourcing only the very best materials and using highly skilled craftsmen. For this project JHR commissioned a number of UK based artisans and specialists who have been long-term collaborators on many previous projects to make bespoke items for them. “They have excellent skills that you can’t find anywhere in the world and some of them are actually family businesses and have been inheriting the same skill and technique through generations. We love working with artisans and specialists as our clients appreciate the stories behind each of the art pieces“, said Badrieh. “We considered and paid extra attention to details on this project when we came to the dressing stage. We have a team of design stylists in the studio who were visual merchandisers previously. We sourced accessories and artwork globally. Each object was carefully picked by us”, she continued. JHR’s favourite room in this house is Her Dressing Room. The client requested a bespoke unit for his wife where she could display her beautiful shoes and handbags similar to the designer boutiques. A bespoke unit was designed to accomplish this with red panels to the back of the joinery for a touch of femininity. A luxurious ottoman with button details gives the feeling of dressing in a designer boutique. Badrieh added: “When the house was completed and unveiled, our client was very happy and felt excited. And, it has been their holiday home in London since then!” This impressive renovation project has been shortlisted for an award at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2017.

FLOORING SILHOUETTE GOLD BY AYKA DESIGN Designer and Creative Director of Ayka Design, Karen Michelle Evans created Silhouette Gold. Inspired by her love of nature from childhood memories of the forest and lakes in and around Wales. The powerful imagery has always stayed vivid, a landscape of towering trees soaring above with their branches reaching the sky whilst one remains below. Bold strong black branches are softened with a rich colourful canvas of Gold. Textures interlock in subtle shades of silks, echoing patterns crossing over them by the clouds. Perspectives are changed as the distant views become more alive, raised in silks in the foreground, harmonising with the low pile height of the trees. This creates the look of an ancient tapestry which somehow evokes the memory of the past in a modern striking design.

LAGOON RUG BY DESIGN INTERVENTION The concept for the Lagoon rug designed by Singapore based interior design firm, Design Intervention, was to create the feel of a tranquil island lagoon. The swirls of blue colour ways have been inspired by ripples in a pool of fresh clear water. The use of deep blues and a touch of black bring an added depth and intensity to the design to enliven any room, while at the same time, the soft degradation of colour ensures a sense of serenity. Design Intervention feel that a rug can often be used as the core design element in a room. It can tie in a dĂŠcor scheme or add visual punch and pattern, whilst keeping the walls clear, either with a contemporary look or as a display for vibrant art work. Design Intervention were inspired by the wonders of nature, with their favourite aspect of this piece was noted to be the colour and texture. They wanted the design to be known for its tranquillity whilst at the same time, its intensity. The Lagoon rug was woven by hand allowing the designer to control the subtle changes in colour. 52 design et al

FLOORING DRAGONTALE RUG BY LOUIS HENRI LTD

The Dragontale rug came from a dream that designer Louis Henri had after viewing a client’s apartment in Kensington, London. Louis has always been fascinated by the water’s edge having painted water lilies in oils and mixed media for the past 3 years. As with all of Louis’s designs there is playfulness to the design but with a classical influence balancing the overall layout. Dragonflies are always at the water’s edge touching but no more. This mirroring of the dragonfly within the water is reflected in the design. Handmade from 100% New Zealand wool, the rug features high-relief carved and low looped details. With a silver and gold detailed Dragonfly, flying in and out of sight like a dragontale. The Dragontale rug measures 2.6 meters in diameter.

THE PERFECT HERRINGBONE BY ARTWOOD FLOORING The Artwood Bespoke Collection offers clients the ability create their own, unique finish for use within their interior scheme. For this private residence in London, Artwood created 2 new finishes in collaboration with the interior design firm René Dekker Design. A matt metallic finish from the Haze Collection was modified to achieve the exact shade required for the clients scheme and a second complimentary finish with hand inlaid metallic gold grain was also created. The 2 finishes were laid in alternating lines of a herringbone pattern at a 2:1 ratio.

A MASTER SUITE STEEPED IN HISTORY RUN FOR THE HILLS – CANONBURY SQUARE

56 design et al

design et al 57

58 design et al

design et al 59

60 design et al

design et al 61

Located in Islington, London, the light-filled first floor of this Georgian townhouse has been converted into a beautiful master suite. Run For The Hills were commissioned to design a sizeable master bedroom and bathroom across the entire first floor of this listed townhouse. The dual aspect space is steeped in history and bathed in light from dawn to dusk, overlooking a classic London garden square. Respecting and preserving the beautiful original features of the Grade II listed townhouse was essential and a specific requirement of the listed consents secured the changes the designers wanted to make during the project. Working within the boundaries of the historical restrictions meant coming up with highly creative solutions for adding contemporary functionality to a space steeped in so much history. The clients chose to work with Run For The Hills because of their style and talent for sourcing unique and beautiful one-off vintage and antique pieces, which are then carefully curated within a wider mix of modern design pieces. The brief was to create a hugely practical but also very glamorous space, full of character and personality which would be a private, luxurious haven for the couple, but also a great space for them to enjoy time with the children. The clients have a growing family and wanted a huge amount of storage for clothes, shoes and paperwork, which Run For The Hills fused discreetly into the fabric of the design. The bespoke wall panelling design cleverly disguises acres of hidden cupboards and wardrobes. The panelling is handle-free, with push/catch opening and in-built lighting. The panelling structure also serves as the backdrop to the feature master bed, with dedicated cubby holes either side of the headboard for extra nightstand storage, to ensure the main bedside tables could be kept tidy and uncluttered. Carefully positioned power

62 design et al

sockets and media outlets are installed discreetly for the clients to easily charge devices at night without filling their side table. The custom designed cabinetry is carefully detailed to look like fixed Shaker panelling, but in fact it is not fitted at all in certain areas, to stay within the bounds of the listed consents. Another special quirk to the project, was that all furniture sourced had to be fully customised to sit correctly on a very old and wonky wooden floor which undulates wildly across the rooms. The clients love the story it tells, so it was retained in the scheme and furniture had to be taught to sit nicely upon it!

“ We loved creating

the bespoke shower enclosure and think it’s one of the hero pieces of the design.”

The designers opted for a rich colour palette of teals, blue greys and rosewood reds. Painting cabinetry and original shutters in tone on tone shades of Farrow & Ball, then adding organic touches via the live edge bedside tables, mid-century wood and leather bench at the end of the bed. Using layers of textural interest, clashing patterns and highly tactile fabrics to dress the super king-size bed. Brass bedside pendant lights from Bert Frank hang low to enhance the impressive ceiling height and to save crucial space for storage on the bedside tables. A beautiful antique cigar cabinet was sourced to sit in the alcove between the bedroom windows, and for a touch of fun, a Ju Ju feather hat from Love Warriors of Sweden sits above. The end of bed low bench is a lovely rosewood and leather piece from the 1950s, which sits opposite another statement rosewood chest of drawers nestling in an alcove. The pendant lighting to both rooms was sourced from European

vintage sellers, one an impressively large capiz shell pendant from Pamono, the other an antique brass lotus flower ceiling lamp from 1st Dibs. Incorporating beautiful vintage pieces in to both rooms adds an extra layer of historical interest to the suite and grounds the scheme within the context of the listed building. The scheme included the design of a fully bespoke, steel-framed shower enclosure which is housed within a beautiful lightfilled part of the overall suite. The structure is wonderful in itself, but the addition of beautiful handmade ceramic tiling and lovely brass accents, make it justifiably the focal part of the en-suite master bathroom. For the vanity, the designers decided that the metal shower needed to be juxtaposed with something natural, so a vintage mid-century rosewood sideboard was repurposed to create a freestanding washstand with floating mirrors. Run For The Hills also designed a mild steel frame to house two floating mirrors above his and hers Carrara marble vessel sinks by Living Roc designs, imported from Canada. The designers worked with the joinery team to ensure the vintage unit could hold two lovely marble sinks which weighed an enormous amount. Anna Burles, Founder and Creative Director of Run For The Hills explained: “It was quite a task making sure the vanity unit could take the weight whilst retaining a delicate look and feel”. “We loved creating the bespoke shower enclosure and think it’s one of the hero pieces of the design” says Anna. The highly contemporary shower enclosure was designed by Run For The Hills in collaboration with steel window specialists, Fabco and features both clear and urban style reeded glass, offering some privacy for the couple within the WC area of the bathroom. Run For The Hills have been shortlisted for the Interior Design Scheme UK Award with this project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2017 to be held at The Dorchester, London, in September.

A REDESIGN TO MAXIMISE AND PRESERVE LLAMA GROUP The Llama Group was instructed by their client to look at the complete redesign and extension of their existing property, which involved several extensions as well as removing all the existing ground and 1st floors to enable a complete redesign of these floors. AWARD NEWS MIXING MATERIALS CREAM & BLACK INTERIOR DESIGN Cream & Black Interior Design collaborated with an architectural glazing specialist to design and install a 6m high fully glazed structural extension, which included a mezzanine for their client’s library. Overall the brief was to merge modern architecture with the period property without disturbing the integrity of the building to creating a wonderful juxtaposition of old and new.

AN INFUSEMENT OF MATURITY AND FUN AURA AURA wanted to follow the client’s request for a house that would bring together maturity and fun through warm earthy materials infused with a lot of colours. The starting point was to create an open spaced narrative that would serve different functions, which led to a strip down of the original structure to create a single space of 150 SQM spread across the ground floor in addition to 250SQM in the second floor.

CURATED JUST FOR FAMILY RACHEL LAXER INTERIORS This project involved the redesign of a family home in New York. AWARD NEWS LITTLEWOOD BY EXTREME DESIGN This beautiful country home in Surrey, owned by a high-profile couple and their family, was extended to add a third to the size of the home as well as being completely renovated to represent their current style, lifestyle and tastes. Extreme Design created a kitchen for this client for the first time 10 years ago, when they first built the property. 10 years later, having always seen Extreme Design as a company that offers the freedom and flexibility to explore their vision, they returned to go through the process again. The principle for the space was to design exquisite furniture that complements the rest of the interior. However, rather than blending into the interior scheme and architecture of the property the kitchen would be a feature exuding the level of sophistication, style and design that reflects the character, success,

Octagonal angles were a key part of the architecture of the building and this can be seen with the design of the boxing around the cabinetry. Conversely, the curves on the island offer a softer, more elegant aesthetic and overall form which juxtaposes the linear and angled elements within the rest of the design and surrounding space. Along the walls, a shadow gap frames the cabinetry creating a recessed area for a flexible lighting scheme which gives options to create the right atmosphere and mood for all occasions. Each recess is finished in the metal texture to continue the detail and throws a luxurious shagreen metal appearance which comes to life when the lighting is on.

and achievements of the owners. This was to be a beautiful, luxurious yet very functional environment in which the couple could entertain and cook for the family. Materials less commonly associated with kitchens were used and whilst bevel mirror and high-gloss veneer are not unusual, the unique combination with textured liquid metal, leather and bronze reflected the extent to which this design was conceived specifically for this couple. The clients owned a shagreen leather dining table which would sit in the open-plan kitchen and dining area so a bespoke metal finish was chosen for the kitchen and is executed in a shagreen texture, subtly tying the two areas together. This metal texture is present throughout the design in various forms, resulting in a cohesive aesthetic. 68 design et al

UNIQUE CHARACTER IN LONDON’S W1 POSTCODE SEQUOIA LONDON - WOOD MEWS

Located in a quiet residential street within Mayfair, Wood Mews is a five-bedroom mews house with exquisite interior design and a host of gadgets. With its versatile design this new build has appeal for anyone who wants to be immersed in the unique character of London’s W1 postcode. The property is just over 3000 square feet spread over four floors and boasts two reception rooms, an office/study area, a fantastic master suite located on the entire top floor of the property, an integrated garage and a passenger lift to all floors. Exclusively designed by Sequoia London, Wood Mews has been shortlisted for the Residential £1 - £2.5 million (project value) Award in the International Design and Architecture Awards 2017. The brief was to create a comfortable and functional family home in a mews property. With no specific end user but with a strong brief to accommodate a potential family the overall design of the space is of a contemporary feel with a few hints of traditional elements. The flow of each room in a house and how they connect carries great importance for designers at Sequoia London. Whilst each space has key design elements that give it a well-designed and thought out feel, there is a tangible synergy between the spaces. Each room is distinct with a clear indication of use – which buyers can adhere to or deviate from depending on their preference. The interiors are underpinned by a neutral colour palette, but are defined with statement furniture, artwork and floor coverings. There is an informal, open-plan sitting room at the front of the property, which enjoys warmth thanks to an integrated fireplace, while the drawing room to the rear of the property is much

76 design et al

more grand and can be separated off by double doors if required. Crucially, the tones and hues of both spaces complement each other, but they have been designed to encourage buyers to envisage using the two spaces differently. Each of the four floors are connected by an internal staircase and also a private internal lift. The various bespoke elements throughout the property allow the home to fully function. The dining area holds an impressive 3-metre long bespoke dining table which can accommodate up to 10 people, perfect for family dinners and dinner parties. The entry reception has an impressive full height bronze mirror wall which reflects the bespoke feature antique brass screen.

“ Woods Mews is an

excellent example of what we can achieve when given control over every component of a project.”

Sequoia London’s favourite aspect of the project is the master suite located on the entire top floor which comprises of the master bedroom, master bathroom and a walk-through dressing area. The master bedroom houses a super king size bed and a lounge area with a curved sofa and ottoman which allows for a comfortable viewing on a 55” TV within an integrated joinery unit. The bedrooms are relaxing with four having en-suite facilities. Sequoia London had to

be clever in the design of these bedrooms to create a spacious feeling, while utilising some of the space for wardrobes and bathrooms. The allocation of bathrooms in this property takes into account the expectation of potential international buyers. Four ensuite bathrooms plus a powder room and a family bathroom mean that there are six in total. This maximises both privacy and convenience. At Woods Mews the stand out pieces are the brass screens at the entrance that truly impress and create a fascinating focal point. The entry area created a challenge as it is relatively narrow. The design team used a clever mix of a brass screen design and antique mirroring to create an illusion of greater space. Radhika Seth, Founder & CEO of Sequoia London said, “Balance was key but we were confident that whoever bought the property would want to live in it – if not full time, then at least for long-term stretches.” She added “Our ambitions for the property were theoretical; while we were careful to maximise the space in the most functional way, we didn’t know for sure how the buyer would ultimately use it. However, the space is there to offer flexibility, and we have no doubt that the buyer will be impressed with how the home will not only adapt to their needs, but exceed their expectations too.” “Woods Mews is an excellent example of what we can achieve when given control over every component of a project – project managing all suppliers and overseeing the exterior architecture as well as the interior design. The client was delighted with the finished product and has reported incredible feedback from prospective buyers, who have had a preview of the property to date.”

This new architectural build, set upon a prestigious, elevated site on the hills in Christchurch, New Zealand is complete with a full high-end interior design package. The architecture was designed to a very high specification by Wilson & Hill Architects. Trenzseater were commissioned to complete the project with an interior design that complemented the architecture and did not compete with it. The home has strong architectural features throughout so the design has been intentionally executed with the use of natural stones for use within the flooring, bathrooms and kitchen. Dark chocolate American oak timbers have also been used in the flooring and incorporated within the joinery, doors and furniture. “Natural materials inspire me for their unique, classic qualities, marbles, stone and the character you get from solid timbers”, explained Ben Lewis, founder of Trenzseater. Natural seagrass wallpapers from Ralph Lauren contrast with metallic backgrounds to create various effects when viewed in different lights. Ben Lewis and his team used a lot of exquisite silk and fine linen drapery, designing bespoke furniture pieces finished in luxurious velvets, flocked velvets, fine wools and antiqued leather. These elements complemented the timber and high gloss tables which all were then finished with their extensive use of European rugs, mirrors and accessories. The use of beautiful crystal chandeliers in various rooms is prominent, along with accent table and floor lamps. A key aspect of the design for this project was the collaboration with the client to make the interior layered, textured and unique. The interior has been intentionally designed to not be too precious, to be lived in and enjoyed by the client and their family. The use of natural materials and finishes complements the architecture and sits well into the site which overlooks the city and surrounding mountains. The products

were made to the designer’s bespoke requirements, tailored to the client’s style. “It was a pleasure working with our clients over the two-year build period, they were exceptionally pleased with the result and have subsequently had us work on their other properties throughout New Zealand”, said Ben. With all their projects, Trenzseater work to ensure that they have a sophisticated balance of layers to generate interest, details and timeless elegance. They believe it is the details which offer refinement, personality, balance, character and luxury. “Interior design is our passion, it’s our creative excellence that clients recognise and demand our distinctive, instantly recognisable quintessential style”, stated Ben.

“ Interior design is

our passion, it’s our creative excellence that clients recognise and demand our distinctive, instantly recognisable quintessential style.”

Ben was inspired by his grandfather’s furniture business growing up. He designed and produced his first sofa at age 14 and had a vision to start a high-end furniture and interior design business in New Zealand to cater for a market where clients wanted something personalised, different to what anyone else had. Trenzseater was established with his brother Hamish, and together they have grown the business into one of New Zealand’s most prominent furniture, interior design stores.

Designed and made exclusively in New Zealand, Trenzseater’s bespoke furniture is distinguished by its truly international style – modern, but also sophisticated, playful and elegant. Ben, meanwhile, recognised both within New Zealand and internationally, directs Trenzseater Interior Design. The Trenzseater team developed a comprehensive interior design service for their clients because of demand for their unique aesthetic vision. Clients increasingly requested their expertise to complete projects to give their homes the distinctive look now synonymous with the Trenzseater name. The service has earned the company a reputation within the industry for detailing some of the finest residential and commercial properties in New Zealand. Trenzseater have been shortlisted in the International Design & Architecture Awards 2017, for this residential interior design work. Speaking about the Awards, Ben Lewis said: “the awards collaborate design and architecture and those who make the world an inspiring place to be”. He continued, “I believe a competition as prestigious as The International Design and Architecture Awards, celebrates those who excel in interior design and gives inspiration to those who are new to the industry. A competition like this fosters growth and excitement”.

EXCLUSIVE LUXURY MICHAEL FIEBRICH DESIGN – CHAIRMAN’S VILLA, CROWN TOWERS PERTH

90 design et al

design et al 91

Crown Towers Perth is an unmatched bespoke hotel situated on the banks of Perth’s Swan River. Perched at the top of the hotel, the Chairman’s Villa is 715-square-metres of pure luxury. Four luxurious bedrooms across two storeys with a grand central staircase, a wraparound balcony, private gym, massage room, study and billiard room round out the luxurious offerings of Australia’s most exclusive suite. Exclusively designed by Michael Fiebrich Design, Chairman’s Villa was a winning project at the International Hotel and Property Awards 2017. The internationally renowned design firm claimed the Hotel Suite Award for Asia-Pacific at the event in June in Ravello. The brief was to create Australia’s most exclusive luxury suite. Knowing the hotel would be the most iconic new building in the Perth skyline, the initial design was approached from an architectural perspective. Although the villa has its own identity, the Crown brand’s strong sense of geometry with an Asian sensibility has been taken into consideration maintaining a common thread with the rest of the property. The detailing is designed in a way that ensures it is appropriate for large volumes and dramatically scaled spaces but rich and unexpected materials and finishes have been selected as accents to provide a fine layer of interest at a more personal scale. The clean, tailored detailing carries through not only in walls, floors and ceilings but is expressed in everything from custom carpets to fabrics. Other key elements such as commissioned artworks and dramatic light fittings are carefully incorporated into the architectural panels as opposed to using a decorative approach. Creating a truly unique experience, every piece of furniture and décor have been custom designed to ensure the highest level of luxury and exclusivity, and each space features custom hand-tufted carpets, designed specifically with the layout and colour palette in mind. Bespoke custom light fittings perform as both decorative lighting and sculptural features set into architectural backdrops.

92 design et al

A playful installation of form and light dances throughout the space and culminates in a spiralling light sculpture that encircles the grand stair; while custom commissioned works, by Australia’s finest artists, are purposefully integrated with architectural elements, supporting the strong and distinguished colours and story of the Chairman’s Villa. Michael Fiebrich Design worked very closely with a Perth Art Consultant, Form, to curate an art program that spoke to the architectural interiors as well as the specific colour and material direction for each space. The result is bespoke, one-of-a-kind artwork installations that feature the best Western Australia artists and blend seamlessly with the interiors. The materials, colours and artwork selections were greatly influenced by the textures of the Western Australia landscape but the Hotel’s prime Swan River frontage was a major inspiration for the project. This drove the master planning of guest rooms, and particularly the suites and villas, to ensure that sweeping views of the meandering river were a large part of the guests experience in these spaces.

“ Staying true to the

Crown brand image, the Michael Fiebrich Design team created the perfect blend of sophisticated, tailored interiors with modern detailing and a strong architectural approach.”

The Chairman’s Villa’s unique monochromatic emerald green colour scheme represents balance, growth, vitality, nature and abundance. The interior architecture’s foundation is endless panels of high gloss lacquer, glossy figured sycamore timber, leather clad walls, accents of mica and capiz with polished metal inlays.

The integration of the latest technology contributed to a long list of design consultants and constant coordination of architectural details and custom furnishings. The villa features integrated user technology panels at all of the televisions, automated custom drapery and sheers, and smart lighting with local switches that speak to the in-room master control system. With double-height windows and spans for entire wall lengths, a unique drapery approach was needed, so as not to disrupt the architectural simplicity. The use of a luxurious neutral drapery fabric matching the light-coloured lacquered wall panels was used, to create an ‘extension’ of the surrounding walls. Further, supporting the geometric undertone, an over-scaled leading edge in a high contrast colour was applied. The effect of the drapery opening is cinematic, and Perth’s skyline the star. The views of Perth and the Swan River are stunning and have been accentuated and beautifully framed through the design approach. The architectural detailing and space planning were carefully considered to ensure these incredible vistas were featured prominently. With a double story living space and floor to ceiling windows, the Chairman’s Villa is one of the most dramatic and impactful spaces in the hotel. Upon entering the Villa, the Crown guests will be greeted with soaring ceilings punctuated with sculptural custom light features, impressively scaled commissioned paintings and clean, masculine architecture. The Chairman’s Villa is as equally awe inspiring from the inside as it is from the exterior. The Crown Hotel group wanted the villa to provide an experience for their guests beyond their expectations of luxury. Speaking about the finished project they said, “Staying true to the Crown brand image, the Michael Fiebrich Design team created the perfect blend of sophisticated, tailored interiors with modern detailing and a strong architectural approach.” The Chairman’s Villa embodies a modern luxury that has something for everyone. It is elevated design, at an approachable and liveable level. Strong statements in architecture, artwork, furniture and lighting combine seamlessly together creating memorable moments and a space that is truly one-of-a-kind.

This timeless yet contemporary home located in Calgary, Canada was designed for a large family where space, aesthetic and functionality all come together in this elegant design. A true feat of planning, design and architectural integration, this transitional home was custom constructed for a family of eight. Designed by Rockwood Custom Homes, Rogers Home has been shortlisted for an award at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2017 in September in the Residential Architectural Property category. The plans and designs for this home were carefully and thoughtfully considered to give it a highly liveable layout and comfortable feel. Rockwood Custom Homes take their inspiration direct from their clients. As part of the design process, they work with them to discover their lifestyles, goals, dreams and wishes. Starting with the client’s vision for their dream home they then layer on architecture, construction and interior design. Allison Grafton, President of Rockwood said, “Every one of our clients is an individual and we honour them as such – with our plans, our designs and our finishing touches”. She continued, “I think this approach to individualism and our care for our clients is what ultimately makes us stand out. We know them. We know their kids. We know their stories, likes and dislikes. And we remember. Upon home handover, we make sure to incorporate touches that really pay homage to the individuals that are going to be dwelling in our homes. We appreciate our clients; we care about them and we want to make sure that they know that we created their home just for them”.

“ Rockwood Custom

Homes take their inspiration direct from their clients.” This elegant inner-city home belongs to a family with six children and as such, has an abundance of bedrooms, baths and comfortable family living areas. Rockwood Custom Homes managed to create an amazing home with individual rooms for each child along with private spaces and spacious common areas that allow for both

privacy and communal family living. Design and functionality were critical in the design and highly creative solutions have been realised to provide separation while keeping the spaces cohesive, warm and inviting. The house provides both privacy and space, in a defined environment. Finished with many elegant details, the house incorporates plenty of storage to ensure a clean, beautiful space for its bounty of residents. The kitchen has a generous island and plenty of sitting space with room for chef and diners alike. The space is beautifully lit with modern, oversized drop lights; the elegant silver cooker hood melds beautifully into the overall design with its gentle curves; and the backsplash—a painted silver glass—is the perfect adornment, like a sparkly bangle on a perfectly manicured hand. It is a glamorous, contemporary eating and entertaining space, perfectly tailored and suited for the client. Built for indoor and outdoor living, this home boasts a heated outdoor patio situated off the kitchen with a built-in BBQ and custom fireplace. The clients requested to have an indoor/outdoor, fully automatic screened-in sunroom, that they could live in 12 months of the year in the at-times freezing climes of Canada. Truly, this is a unique feature of this home that extends the living space far beyond the finished home into a charming backyard. The home itself incorporates classic handsome lines with subtle touches of “mod” and glam. The fluid design of the home is very chic, yet inviting. Design elements such as the custom silver-leafed extractor fan in the kitchen, interior doors with metal details in the shaker panels, and waterfall countertop detail in the powder room are glamorous, lending texture and interest to this luxurious family home. Some of Rockwood Custom Home’s favourite aspects of the project include; the customdesigned wine wall with a crushed-glass countertop and LED lighting underneath, the Antique mirrored details throughout the home creating continuity and flow and the lighting fixtures by manufacturers such as Framburg, Global Views, Mantra Lighting and Avenue Lighting which are dramatic, bold and the highest of fashion. This home is a beautiful collaboration of contemporary style with timeless traditional details. The blend of the two styles creates an elegant modern feel to the home.
