Last month’s International Design & Architecture Awards Ceremony was as glittering and exciting as ever. This is the one event we keep at its permanent home in London and this year we returned once again to The Dorchester Ballroom for a truly wonderful evening. It is inspiring to see, meet and spend time with so many eminent designers and architects who had travelled from all corners of the globe to join us for the event. More than 61,000 of you voted over a four week period and the competition, though very close in certain categories, was fierce but fair.
Over the ourse of the next few months, we will take a look at these winning design schemes, and for this issue we step inside the first group of projects and residential properties - all very different in style, size and scope. Their design styles reflect in part their cultural and geographical location and for this reason we think they are vastly interesting and varied. This ocean-side residence is all about Caribbean open-plan living; generously proportioned rooms link to the poolside deck, the gardens, and the beach beyond. This contemporary ocean-side home enjoys a beautiful location right on the ‘Platinum’ West Coast of Barbados with near-perfect beaches, sparkling turquoise seas and a handful of restaurants that rank amongst the world’s most desirable destinations! Wilkinson Beven Design’s interior brief was to devise a concept footprint, a planned space that provided the client with the relaxation and entertainment spaces that were required, with significant areas opened up to ‘outdoor living’. The task was therefore to provide spaces that flowed together, emphasising openness and light and transitioning from interior to exterior. This project claimed the Residential £20 million plus (Americas and Caribbean) Award at the International Design & Architecture Awards at The Dorchester, London in September 2017. Director of Wilkinson Beven Design, Richard Wilkinson, reflects: “Our projects are frequently lengthy and highly detailed in terms of design input and this was no exception. Designing and building in the Caribbean presents a set of unique problems and difficulties, so to win an award that reflects the amount of time and effort that has been invested in a project is extremely gratifying.” He continues: “We feel that the Design & Architecture Awards have become an important global platform to feature our work. This year’s award ceremony had a huge amount of international submissions, winners and attendees which confirmed the Awards as a truly international event.” The views from the lounge were carefully considered so that the deck-level pool creates a strong visual link to the ocean’s horizon without interruption. The design has been curated for this specific

environment. The entire project has been built relatively low, forming a two-storey building that sits within the landscape. Although contemporary builds are very few and far between on Barbados, this house seems to have found it’s natural spot on the coast, surrounded by palm trees and subtle landscaping and respecting the fine margin of precious beach that defines its boundary.

The house is decorated simply, in white, with the overall style being very much influenced by the look of contemporary Miami beach residences; this creates a backdrop both for furniture and the client’s contemporary art collection. A large format, light limestone floor tile was used throughout the ground floor and continued out onto the pool deck. A guest powder room has floor to ceiling framed family photographs and the Deco styling of the large, faceted mirrors and vanity stand echo the Miami beachfront influence of this home. The space is a play of cool, glittering surfaces; a contrast – but also a connection to the mirage-hazy, sparkling ocean right outside. The spacious master bedroom gives the sense of being on board a yacht, with rich, exotic timber underfoot; fully opening glass doors afford both garden and sea views, also allowing breezes generated through slatted architectural blinds on the building’s eastern elevation to filter through the house, providing a comfortable environment that is
augmented by the shade created from the projected terrace canopies on the westfacing side of the house. Entertainment and relaxation are important elements of the life of the house; an onyx-clad bar, complete with teppanyaki grill, forms a vibrant hub that links other openplan spaces, such as a games area and informal family TV lounge. Sea-facing, the open-fronted principal rooms provide access to the gardens and pool deck by way of oversized stepping stones, which meander to the ocean’s edge. In the heat of the day, sample the coolest lunchtime spot on the island! The structure of the sunken table and perimeter seating was designed and built in to the shape of the pool. Commissioned to design a bespoke breakfast table and seating area for the property and inspired by luxury yachts our team designed a bespoke teak sunburst breakfast table combining high gloss white finishes with polished marine grade stainless steel elements. Bespoke banquette seating surrounds the table providing informal seating that could be adapted from breakfast, lunch to evening meals. Sea-facing, the open-fronted principal rooms provide access to the gardens and pool deck by way of oversized stepping stones, which meander to the ocean’s edge. In the heat of the day, sample the coolest lunchtime spot on the island! The structure of the sunken table and perimeter seating was designed and built in to the shape of the pool. As the sun begins a final ‘slide’ towards the horizon of sea and sky, there is a moment of, ‘magic light’ that bathes the house in reflected gold; colours and mood change and soften, as the entertainment spaces indoors come into their own, whether this be sipping early evening rum cocktails around the bar, or dinner, taken in the beach-side cabana, with the gentle lap of the tide for company. A flavour of Miami style in an idyllic, exclusive location.

This project involved a complete alteration and refurbishment including FF&E, with new MEP services in Paris. One of JHR Interiors existing clients commissioned their services for a property located on the prestigious Rue de Rivoli in Paris, which boasts views of the beautiful Jardin des Truileries and the Eiffel Tower. It was this perfectly located property that made JHR Interior winners of the Interior Design Scheme - Europe Award at the International Design & Architecture Awards at The Dorchester, London in September 2017. The director of JHR Interior’s, Badrieh Johari, reported: “It is a noble award that honours and celebrates the design talents for their hard work which is also a platform for us to get together and contribute our very best and share our creativity within the design industry and the next generation.” JHR Interiors developed a scheme of rich neutral tones and luxurious textures to complement the stunning views available. The planning brief was to complete a new refurbishment and alteration of the layout. Their client wanted a property where he could find comfort and call it home. “We advised our client that we would choose neutral colours so that with time, he could change the colours and texture of the furnishings to create a new look yet still sits perfectly within the space.” The designers divided the living room space up into 2 separate seating areas, with accompanying bespoke joinery, and also a space for the client’s grand piano. JHR Interiors also designed bespoke joinery for the various areas, which help differentiate each zone. The designers created an open plan kitchen and dining room using lightcoloured and mirrored surfaces to help light reflect around the space. The recessed ceiling and lighting above the dining table also helps to differentiate this zone from the kitchen space.

JHR Interior’s favourite aspect of the project was designing the layout in the living room in a way that took advantage of its overlooking view of the Eiffel Tower. The design of the property works to maximise the light as it is an open plan penthouse with many large windows, Badrieh Johari reflected that a favourite aspect of the project was “enjoying the view from the balcony every time we had a site meeting. The view was breath-taking.”

This 325-square metre show apartment vividly brings to life the design philosophy of “simple space luxury lifestyle”. The apartment, located in Foshan, China was completed in May 2017. The layout and classic art pieces work in harmony with the beige and warm grey colour tones. In turn, these interact playfully and elegantly with the dark blue elements located throughout the home. Holistically, the interior design creates a warm, elegant mood which welcomes the owner, their family and numerous VIP guests. It has become a favourite place for family gatherings and celebrations. Ronald Lu & Partners won the Interior Design Scheme – Asia Pacific Award with this project at the International Design & Architecture Awards 2017 which took place in London on 22 September. Flavia Chu, Head of Communications and Marketing at Ronald Lu & Partners, expressed that “The International Design & Architecture Awards is an excellent international platform which enables the best design companies in the world to come together in celebration of each other’s achievements.” She continued: “Asia Pacific’s design is world-class” and explained they were honored to receive an award in this sector this year. The design colour scheme consists of warm grey, turquoise blue and shiny finishes which provides a luxurious feel with a touch of modern classic. The design has successfully illustrated the owner’s unique taste and international exposure: modern with an international perspective. Together, the interior architectural style along with the designated colour scheme delivers a modern luxury style, the goal of this project. The layout of the living room, dining area and master bedroom, its closet and two bedrooms, aligns harmoniously with one another, reflecting the lifestyle and attitude of the owner: luxurious simplicity. Home and family are part of the most important Chinese

traditional cultures. The living room contains a special feature wall made by fluted glass, which was originally made for industrial use, delivering a modern abstract interior look. It also creates a young style that not only focuses on traditional material but also uses ideas from ‘outside the box’, carrying out a perfect mix and match. In the hallway, the designer has chosen to replace the traditional British luxury style with a built-in cabinet which has been designed for storage but also displays the owner’s art pieces providing a modern way to showcase the owner’s collection. The master suite has had an upholstered elevation treatment applied to the head board which has allowed special features to be incorporated such as lighting and metallic decorations.

unique expression of ambience.” This feeling is brought to life in several ways: through stylish crystal hanging lights in the living room and dining area, the table and chairs made of contrasting yet complementary materials; the imitation leather flamed with champagne-coloured steel feature walls in the master bedroom; and through the sophisticated themed bedrooms. With our extensive interior design knowledge, supported by our strong architectural and planning background, we are passionate to unfold space through luxurious interior architecture concept. West One Bathrooms design team recently completed this stunning bathroom project in Sussex. The design brief was to bring an Arts & Crafts house into the twenty-first century with a stunning bespoke master en-suite bathroom. The bathroom is part of an extension added to the front of the house where the client desired a softer, feminine touch. It was the collaboration of textures and materials which rewarded them with winners of the Bathroom Award at the International Design & Architecture Awards which was held in London on 22nd September 2017. “The reputation the awards have within the Industry is astonishing, people highly regard these awards. We are absolutely delighted to receive such a high accolade, especially when we were in a particularly strong category!” stated by the Head of Design at West One Bathrooms, Louise Ashdown. Smooth chalky textures give a warm, airy feel to the space, and a distressed plank effect floor and walls in the shower area give the feel of an old Parisian apartment. Behind the bath the designer wanted to create a soft elegant point of interest that would blend with, not fight against, the rest of the room. They settled on a bespoke mix of mosaics for Trend in a Damask pattern to draw the eye to the back wall where the full width of the recess for the shower and WC area was created with the same Damask mosaic. The recesses were lined with Corian, the same material used behind the bath, to tie up the textures and to avoid any tile trim. The bath from antoniolupi is made from Cristalplant and has a lovely soft chalky texture, there are no hard-glossy surfaces in the design of this bathroom. This is followed by the soft Corian double basin which is paired with the gently curving ‘O’ collection taps by THG. The basin floats seamlessly on the wall and is contrasted by a beautiful acid glass white unit below and soft back lit mirror above. A discrete matt white heated bar for towels, floats on the wall below the TV. “The opportunity to use a wide variety of textured surface finishes and bespoke

brassware in satin luxbrass in this open plan space. The attention to detail is exquisite as well as the bespoke mosaic feature wall with led lighting set off the bath as the focal point,” explained Louise Ashdown.

The design and colour scheme evolved around their clients desires who wanted a softer feminine touch to the bathroom, they kept the room open with an open doorway through from the bedroom and dressing room, whilst providing privacy with a feature wall behind the bath. Textures were chosen to give a warm feel to the space, as well as distressed plank effect floor and walls, giving the feel of an old Parisian apartment. The designer wanted to avoid any harsh chrome in this room, so opted for soft satin gold taps and fittings in replacement. The light open space combined with the soft textures of the fixtures, satin gold taps and fittings worked seamlessly within the open space. The tiled feature wall behind the bath creates a harmonious focal point, that blends effortlessly with the rest of the room. The avoidance of any hard and glossy surfaces and the absence of chrome zone creates a touch of Vintage Chic. The distressed plank effect floor provides a lovely sensory feeling underfoot and creates an interesting view point that draws you in as you wander through from the bedroom and dressing room. This draws the eye further into the room and creates a 3D feel to the space and lets one adsorb the room in as a whole and allows a sneaky peek into the bathroom décor as you walk down the hallway. A tempting invitation in to this relaxing sanctuary away from the rest of the house.

Ashberg House is an exceptional and unique new build 8,400 sq ft residential property, inspired and designed around the Ashberg diamond. Morpheus London’s design brief was to create a truly unique residential property by combining carefully considered design concepts with highly skilled craftsmanship and intelligent use of space and to set this home apart from any other luxury residence within London. Ashberg House was named after and takes influence from this extraordinary stone, not least in its glass architectural aesthetic and faceted interior details, but also the precise and exacting construction methods employed. It was these details that confirmed Morpheus London the winners of the Luxury Residence – London at the International Design & Architecture Awards in September 2017. Design Director at Morpheus London, Rickesh Patel, stated “We feel honoured for our design project Ashberg House to have won the Luxury Residence - London Award 2017; this is a project we are immensely proud of and believe it is one of a kind in London.”
The 43’ x 13’ ft heated swimming pool, complete with Ozone water purification technology, was inspired by esteemed sculptor Richard Wilson’s permanent and site-specific installation 20:50 in London’s Saatchi Gallery. The Ashberg Swimming Pool takes the home’s overarching theme of ‘play on light’ and expands on it further. A full length riven slate wall descends into the water and a black polished ceiling was installed, contrasting with the light stone floors, and designed to frame the pool area and mirror the ripples on the water’s surface beneath. Floating limestone steps leading into the pool maintain a sense of zen-like tranquillity. The feature plaster wall behind the day beds is inset with a large-scale motif to resemble light refracting through glass. In addition to the swimming pool, a complete Spa area has been installed featuring a bespoke Drom UK Steam room system, a drench shower, dedicated changing areas and an independent climate controlled environment.
From its very inception, the design of Ashberg House considered all aspects that may inform a way of life. All spaces were designed with a unity in mind, bringing together all rooms within the house; the chandelier, hand crafted by glass couturiers, serves as a linking element between the first, ground and Garden floors. Framed in its own glass display box above the dining table and composed of over 140 leaves in graduated coloured glass, the Falling Leaf Chandelier imitates the external foliage of the trees found in the garden, ensuring the connectivity of Ashberg House’s interior and exterior, enhancing further the numerous vistas and views between rooms. This leaf motif continues in the Master Bedroom Suite, which spans the entire first floor and features a beautiful bespoke hand-crafted headboard covering an entire wall in the master bedroom. Designed by Morpheus London, the leaf motifs, hand embroidered in silk, have been commissioned from Fromental and the design itself is influenced by the horizontal branches of a tree framing the bedroom terrace and carrying a calming sense of nature through into the bedroom. The hand painted silk was overlaid onto a paper and then incorporated into the whole joinery piece of the headboard, crafted from stained eucalyptus and polished nickel.
Every detail and element within Ashberg House has been designed to the highest standard, with the majority of furniture pieces being designed bespoke for the property. The interior architecture of this residential property has been carefully considered to maximize the flow of natural light around the space. The modern architecture juxtaposed with softening interior demonstrates how this design offers a sense of balance and proportion; rough textures against smooth, light finishes contrasting with dark, more feminine elements against the more masculine, the exterior blending seamlessly with the interior, references to water and fire, resulting in a design that offers a great sense of tranquillity and wellbeing. Morpheus London’s client has expressed: “A truly unique and exceptional property which is undoubtedly one of London’s most desirable properties.”

As well as this incorporation of unity and the natural form into the design, it was vital during the conception stage that the kitchen maintained synergy with the living area throughout. The kitchen joinery and the living area joinery therefore has a unified style for a seamless appearance, creating a cohesive living and dining space. The kitchen is the heart of the house at Ashberg House and the open plan environment encourages the perfect gathering space. This space is further enhanced by the striking garden at the back of the house, with a comfortable yet sophisticated design.

This luxurious 17,000 square foot Lakefront Family Home is a modern and glamorous space inspired by the expansive lakefront views of Lake Ontario, offering ever changing views and a peaceful refuge from the city that surrounds. The client desired a modern space that is not austere, resulting in a calm, airy and glamorous two-storey living room, while offering warmer more intimate spaces for family gatherings. Douglas Design Studio were challenged to create a balance between classical and modern elements throughout, using bespoke furnishing to achieve this. This challenge was a great success having claimed winning project of the Interior Design Global – Residential 10 Million Plus (Project by Value) at the International Design & Architecture Awards on 22nd September 2017. The Awards are there to “recognize and honour innovative ideas and designs. It’s not only an achievement from the perspective of the designer and architect, it’s also a source of inspiration for many others” Jeffrey Douglas reflects. The brief of the project was to meet the requirements of the different people in the household. They were presented with a large home and a client with a fashion sensibility, children, pets and a desire to live in a comfortable, relaxed manner, while being able to entertain at the same time. Not only did Douglas Design Studio enjoy the challenge of all these disparate requirements, they enjoyed seeking resolutions to create a beautiful, functional space for every member of the family and all activities. The home has an open plan, so connectivity between spaces was important. Clean, strong architectural lines were introduced to define and connect spaces, and invite guests throughout. The main floor is designed for entertaining with a high two-storey living room, large kitchen with a dramatic twostorey breakfast room, an intimate dining space and comfy family room which then connects back to the kitchen. Douglas Design Studio developed a fashion inspired palette featuring Dior grey that has been punctuated with jewel tones including amethyst, deep Yves St Laurent blues, and bright pinks. The goal was to create a fresh, relaxing yet richly detailed space, that is contrasted with bronzes and dark stained woods in the dining and family rooms. Art and art placement was a major consideration in the overall scheme, carefully balancing the use of colour, texture, line and sculpture.

“ It’s not only an achievement from the perspective of the designer and architect, it’s also a source of inspiration for many others ” Bespoke furnishings reminiscent of the Deco era, selectively curated for a more modern aesthetic, are used throughout to lend glamour, comfort and elegance to the lofty space, ‘classically modern’ as Jeffrey Douglas states. Douglas Design Studio used their artisan skills to create horizontal panelled walls with a reveal, bespoke polished nickel grillwork and hood cover over the gas range, back painted glass panels inset into the kitchen cabinet doors and Bianca Carrara Extra marble master ensuite. There is an easy elegance and flow from space to space that is lightly modulated to give differing environments for different functions. The whole home can be used for casual entertaining, or easily be cosy for homemade wood-oven pizza and movie night. The home is situated overlooking Lake Ontario and has incredible views of the water for as far as the eye can see. The interiors of the home were designed to draw in the blue colours from the view through expansive windows to incorporate them in the colour palette. The home has the atmosphere of a vacation home even though it is right in the city. This was exactly what the client wanted, a calm retreat from the city, while still being close to city conveniences. Jeffery Douglas adds, “Winning in any category is an honour for our team. Etcetera Living’s client, Abwab Real Estate, built 11 of these low-rise buildings each comprising of only 4 or 5 floors with apartments varying in size from 1650 sq. ft. to 6500 sq. ft. The buildings are dotted around a parkland area giving all residents spectacular views, either green spaces, tree line views or Dubai skyline views. The apartments are situated directly opposite 7th Heaven, at the water’s edge and have views across the waterway to the retail area where there are restaurants and cafes directly on the water. A key element of the whole project is a ‘car free’ zone as all parking is underground giving residents a tranquil yet lively atmosphere. Ashjar project was rewarded with winner of City Space (Apartment/Penthouse) Award on 22nd September at the International Design & Architecture Awards. Shakti Gupta, Interior Designer for Etcetera Living, states “It’s a fantastic way to celebrate design by bringing the design world together in one event in spite of racial, cultural and gender differences that are issues in the rest of the outside world. We have seen the competition get higher every year we enter. There’s so much passion and inspiration in one award ceremony.” The client was very specific in their brief - to create a decor that will appeal to all nationalities and appear timeless and not ‘contrived’. The chosen 2-bedroom apartment is 3034 sq. ft. and the client wanted to create a ‘show home’ for this project. The client wanted the space to be contemporary but also feel like a place where a small family or a single person would equally feel at home in. The design allowed diversity of each space of the apartment to reflect the tastes of all clients from various backgrounds. When designing this apartment, the designers imagined it to be for a young ‘millennial’ couple. The main reception area encompasses the kitchen, dining area and the sitting room and should flow seamlessly across the space. The guest bedroom needed to feel like a retreat from the ‘hustle and bustle’ of the city and at the same time take full advantage of the view of the Dubai Skyline. The master bedroom design also needed to take advantage of the large space by utilising it to the maximum and integrate the balcony into the same space to take advantage of the views. For the master bedroom, Etcetera Living wanted to design something different, something they had not done before. The master bedroom was inspirited by the digital age. The design

was translated by using monochrome colour scheme for the room. When you think of modern technology you think of black and white as it is such a timeless theme, it’s always going to appear new. The hints of gold add an element of glamour and drama to the space. When you first walk into the master bedroom your eye goes straight to the dramatic black wall, with a white console table. The whole apartment colour scheme varied in each area. The living and dining room was a modern Moroccan theme with blue and white to give a slight Mediterranean touch. They then customised the dining table which was previously a wall sculpture. The master bedroom was completely different with monochromatic colours with hints of gold. There were slogans throughout the bedroom creating a light hearted, relatable, fun and humorous room. The whole building is very clean and simple in look, but because of the large terraces we could add outdoor living space – 8 seater dining table, a sofa set for viewing the ‘Downtown Skyline’ and outside the Master Bedroom, 2 black Hammocks and of course plants to bring together the building and the nature surrounding it. The whole apartment was designed architecturally to complement the greenery all around. It was Etcetera Living’s priority to make sure that the interiors worked seamlessly with the landscaping and to utilise each space to maximum effect both aesthetically and practically. This was achieved by the layout of the furniture maximizing the views and the colours used to create a sense of tranquillity and harmony between the indoor and outdoor spaces.
