Expert Advice & Insight

Introba is rewriting the rules for healthcare buildings and districts around the globe. The delivery of world-class healthcare facilities demands technical excellence and an ability to genuinely respond to the needs and concerns of clients and stakeholders.

We have established an award-winning reputation in the design of healthcare facilities, meeting complex design requirements while creating healing environments. Our engineering teams work to deliver high-performance, cost-effective, sustainable solutions that leave more dollars for healthcare delivery programs due to operational savings.

Deep Green & Equitable

Within our foundation is where our engineer draw upon an approach to design heating, cooling, ventilation and lighting systems. We prioritize comfort (thermal, visual, lighting, acoustic, ergonomic). We seek to improve health through the delivery of superior air and water quality.

Social equity and community health are the foundation on which we approach each project to create a positive social impact.

Resilience

Designing for a post-pandemic world. COVID-19 and increase in wild fires have reminded everyone of the connection between our indoor environment, our planet and our health.

Resilience is more than just climate change mitigation, it includes designing for adaptation, agility and flexibility. Our deep green ethos which our firm is founded on, ensures that resource efficiency, whether its energy, water, or materials are considered upfront in order to support movement toward a more sustainable future.

Our “Now, Next, Future” framework toward post-pandemic design has guided our own practice as well as our clients toward more agile planning around COVID re—entry and future thinking

At Introba, we understand that better physical environments create lower stress levels and less fatigue among staff, increasing care delivery effectiveness and improving patient safety and overall healthcare quality.
Healthcare

Health & Wellness

Our strength in the healthcare sector is based on our ability to explore campus-scale solutions in balance with health and wellness aspects of the built environment. Our early work in design analytics and building optimization provides a baseline for the design and provides our clients with a roadmap for ongoing optimization.

Savings recognized during the operation can then be allocated towards initiatives focusing on the patient’s health experience.

Happiness Satisfaction & Culture are key

We believe that our people are our greatest asset and that they combine passion with purpose. They are diverse, ready, willing and able - united by a shared commitment to projects with a positive impact.

Our annual Corporate Social + Environmental Responsibility (CSER) report documents our journey to becoming a truly sustainable business across five areas:

• Environmental Footprint

• Justice, Equity, Diversity + Inclusion (JEDI)

• Health + Well-being

• Education + Impact

• Safety + Resilience

You’ll find our latest CSER report on our website. The report aims to ensure that we “walk the talk” in alignment with our mission and accelerate our pathway to a more sustainable future.

Different areas of research are reflected in seven “neighborhoods” of science that span two to three floors and are connected by atrium spaces to encourage cross-collaboration.

The tower also houses new learning and teaching facilities for SickKids™ Learning Institute including a 250seat lecture theatre, flexible learning spaces, and display area. Additionally, the facility includes tele-education area, meeting rooms, two new pathways to connect the Research and Learning Tower to SickKids™ McMaster and Atrium buildings.

Since research laboratories usually expend large amounts of energy, extensive planning was required to reduce energy consumption. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling of lab ventilation systems was performed to demonstrate

viability of displacement and variablerefrigerant flow ventilation systems in labs. By using these innovative ventilation systems, energy efficiency was significantly increased.

As part of the process, our team connected on a regular basis with the occupants to establish required policy & procedures to meet the minimum sustainability, energy & water use reduction requirements outlined by the Hospital.

A high performance envelope was incorporated into the structural design of the facility in order to reduce the overall size of the mechanical cooling & heating systems. This addresses the energy consumption by passive rather than active means. The building is also designed to connect into the local district steam energy system, further enhancing energy efficiency.

To help navigate these challenges, the Provincial Health Authorities developed Resilience Guidelines for Health Facility Planning and Design (Climate Resilience Guidelines), in collaboration with the provincial and federal agencies, local governments, and industry partners.

This joint initiative enables health authorities and professional services partners to address knowledge gaps, build capacity and advance good practice in reducing climate risks and integrating climate resilience at the health facility level. Additionally, it also provides a portfolio of recommended design options and implementation pathways to guide strategic investments in health facility resilience from business plan phase to end of useful life. Introba served as a co-chair and facilitator of the industry Task Force to develop resilience options and pathways. Our team was also involved in drafting the final Climate Resilience Guidelines.

The 600 University Avenue building at Mount Sinai Hospital is an acute care hospital facility that was originally constructed in the 1970s.

The Phase 3 redevelopment of Mount Sinai involved the renovation of approximately 300,000 square feet of the existing facility, and included various program areas such as Perioperative Services, the Emergency Department, Critical Care (ICU), Medical Device Processing, Ambulatory Care, Materials Management, Health Records and one Medical/Surgical InPatient unit.

Additionally, there was significant infrastructure work to be done in order

to meet the current CSA standards regarding redundant air handling capacity required for specific clinical areas. The project was completed in five stages due to the complexity of working within an operating hospital while maintaining full operations, and took approximately five years to complete. As part of the staging work, there was 60,000 square feet of additional space to be relocated or decanted, spread across approximately two dozen different program areas that do not directly form part of the core project work.

The New Adult Mental Health & Addictions Facility (NAMHAF) will be an addition to the existing Health Sciences Centre (HSC) campus. It is a project comprises the development, design, and construction of a 240,000sf, 100+ bed hospital, as well as a 60-bed hostel and a 350,000sf parking garage to serve the site. The facility is intended to replace the existing Waterfront Hospital, which opened in 1854 and is at the end of its service life. The new building is to be incorporated into, and compatible with the existing hospital site, including integration of the fire alarm, communications, and networking systems.

Introba will act as an independent entity on behalf of the project team to implement a detailed commissioning process that is consistent with the requirements laid out in the LEED v4 Reference Guide.

This will include commissioning of the building enclosure, mechanical, electrical and ICAT systems in the building for both the NAMHAF facility and the parking garage.

Introba understands that healthcare projects inherently involve critical and sensitive components. Facilities such as NAMHAF are complex with many interacting systems including laboratories, ICT and FF&E systems in addition to vital MEP systems. Commissioning is a vital component in ensuring that interactions between systems are working correctly, and that all the building systems are running, without fault, at project completion. Fundamental to this process will be ensuring the NAMHAF operations staff are empowered to effectively maintain the new systems.
