After Nine Months, What’s the Rush?

The rate of induction in the U.S. has more than doubled since 1990, yet induction increases the risks for a number of complications for women and infants. The truth is, you can refuse induction at 39 weeks but prepare for push back.

So much for au naturel. And forget that women have been birthing babies for millions of years in the wild, in the bush, in the desert and on the sea with nary a doctor in sight. In the here and now, for no good reason beyond availability, new moms are being pushed to induce their babies even when there’s no medical reason to do so. And it’s really, really hard for a woman to disagree with her doctor when she’s in such a vulnerable position. At a certain point it becomes no discussion, this is what is happening. I know because I’ve watched it happen.

Nine months is a long and uncomfortable period for pregnant women. They navigate through each trimester as best they can, making it appear easier than it is, because they want to look like they know what they’re doing even when they sometimes don’t. Nine months is a long time to wait, and when you finally get to 39 weeks, swollen and irritable, if your caregiver starts talking induction it doesn’t sound so bad. In fact, it’s exciting to reach get this baby out of me time. Maybe it wouldn’t matter so much about how often they are inducing today if it were actually good for the baby and mama. “They” say induction helps reduce the cesarean rate. But the American Family Physician Foundation (one of the only top-tier organizations battling the skyrocketing induction rate) says spontaneous labor is far safer than induction or cesarean for women and infants. The benefits of spontaneous birth include improved safety and better short- and long-term maternal and infant health. If women don’t need an induction for the baby’s or their own well-being why do it?

When I had my four babies, the whole focus was on keeping the infant in the womb as long as possible (as long as both of us were fine) so the baby’s lungs could grow strong — why isn’t anyone talking about that anymore? Why are new moms being force-fed this induction route and then enduring extra-long labors (painful ones with balloon catheters, etc.) because of it? And if the baby could say something ... what would he say?

The truth is, new mamas, some babies are mature as early as 37 weeks (259 days) and others need 42 weeks (294 days). Every single day matters. Size is not an indication of maturity and the due date is only a guideline. Nature isn’t perfect, but when it comes to babies and birth, unless there is a clear, medical indication that induction of labor will do more good than harm, nature beats science hands down. For moms and babies, it is safe and wise to wait patiently until labor begins on its own. And that’s when Baby says, “I’m ready — it’s go time.”

A2023 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that approximately 49 percent of 1 - to 5-year-olds do not eat any vegetables in a day.

“These findings are very concerning,” says pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp, M.D., author of the best-selling parent books including The Happiest Toddler on the Block. Parents need to offer at least one vegetable at each meal and to make sure it tastes good. Karp says embracing dips can help.

As for a toddler’s sneakiness, try not to accuse or jump to conclusions, Karp says. Better to catch your child being good and since you’ve had an issue at mealtime, to remain present for the whole meal. If sneaky behaviors continue, by all means, contact your pediatrician for answers.

Nashville Parent’s Baby & Kids Zone at Nashville Wellness Fest

The family-friendly event returns to Nashville Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 6.

Families will be the focus of the 4th annual Nashville Wellness Fest, returning to the Nashville Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m..

Vanderbilt Recruiting Teens for Paid Research Study

Amid the ongoing mental health crisis among teenagers — in particular adolescent girls — researchers want answers in order to find solutions. The BRAINS Lab at Vanderbilt University is currently seeking Middle Tennessee adolescents and young adults, ages 12 to 23 years, to participate in a paid research study. The goal is to learn how brain activity in regions related to cognition and emotion may impact mental health among teens.

If you think your teen may be interested in participating, he will first need to be cleared for eligibility via a self-report online questionaire followed by a brief phone screening. This step will earn your child a $10 gift card. If selected for the study, your teen will participate in the following:

• A Zoom interview

• Answering brief questions about mood on their phone three times a day for one week

• An in-person session at Vanderbilt University involving EEG recording (measures brain activity with a cap placed on the head), and cognitive tasks (memory games)

• A separate in-person session at Vanderbilt University Medical Center involving an MRI scan (takes a picture of your teen’s brain)

Much Ado About COLIC

Iwas beside myself. My little boy, who was the sweetest and seemingly most content newborn to have ever graced the planet, developed colic at 2 months old. My mother insisted it was just “Sunset Sobs,” her term for that fussy time in the evening — usually about the same time of day — when we would walk the floor with baby Ronan because nothing we did would sooth him. Incoming was worse from my motherin-law who pinned the blame on me: “Oh, we don’t have allergies, so he must have gotten this from your side.” Well, excuse me, I cried to myself in the bathroom. My family doesn’t have allergies and Ronan doesn’t either.

To the Doctor We Go

Naturally, as we finally moved into our room at the pediatrician’s o ce, Ronan was a little angel. He slept peacefully in his car seat as I questioned myself, bleary-eyed, stressed out and feeling like a failure. The doctor gently knocked then came in. She quickly assessed.

“First of all, it’s not your fault,” she said, crouching down and peering intently at my boy. “Some babies just have a lot of gassiness and it’s uncomfortable for them. Or they get overstimulated. It’s not the result of anything you’ve done or haven’t done,” she added.

Ronan began to stir in his seat and his eyes opened.

I gently lifted him out and cradled him in my arms. I knew he would be ready to nurse very soon.

“We’ll just dim the lights and let you feed him right here, OK? I’ll be back in a bit,” my doctore said.

I didn’t want her to leave because I stressed it would be hours before she’d return. But we unwrapped ourselves and got to breastfeeding. My shoulders ached with heat. I wanted to sleep more than anything else. I was irritated by my husband that this was somehow all up to me. And irked by the older women in my life who wouldn’t stop o ering solutions. Tears stung my eyes.

After feeding, it started. Ronan was beside himself. Full on purple crying. I stood and moved about the room as best I could. It was hot in here, I was sweaty, we were steaming. Miraculously, the doctor reappeared with a smile on her face.

“Oh, fussy-wussy,” she said, rubbing Ronan’s tiny back. “This has been happening daily? Several times a day?”

“It feels like it’s constant to me and it isn’t OK for me to want him to keep sleeping so I don’t have to deal,” I whispered.

“Sometimes there’s nothing you can do to relieve the crying; it’s so hard. The good news is it won’t last forever.”

I had wanted her to wave a magic wand.

Instead, she talked me through a list of things I could try. She examined Ronan as he fussed and pronounced him ... perfect. Then she slipped Ronan a few Mylicon drops which didn’t seem to do anything but make him wail more. She said to give these to him after his feedings ... and to try and not be too hard on myself.

The Truth

Colic is more common than I thought. It a ects 20 percent of all babies and a clear cause for the condition remains unknown. Any two week or older baby who cries for three inconsolable hours in a day, in more than three days a week and for more than three weeks probably has colic. Opinions and theories about why it happens are not uniform; some

babies get it, others do not. I started reading everything I could.

Colic is not just caused by one thing alone and it has di erent causative factors which include sleeping disruption, immaturity of the nervous system, food allergy, sensory overload and hypersensitivity to the environment. Some psychosocial issues have also been recognized such as insu cient parent interaction, parental anxiety, maternal smoking and family tension.

Once I accepted that Ronan was colicky, I decided to not fight it any longer but instead to try and work with my baby to ease his journey. These are some of the suggestions my doctor sent me home with. Some have helped, but of course, all babies are di erent.

What You Can Try

• Hold Baby in an upright position for feeding and directly afterwards.

• Experiment with how often and when you burp your baby.

• O er meals in a quiet setting.

• If Baby likes a pacifier, o er him one.

• Invest in a baby sling or carrier and use it during colicky periods.

• Use your baby stroller at home, indoors and out.

• Give Baby a warm bath.

• Place a lightly warmed towel on Baby’s tummy.

• Hold Baby with her legs curled up toward her belly.

• Massage Baby’s tummy or give a full massage.

• Swaddle Baby in a blanket.

• Lay Baby’s tummy down across your lap and pat his back.

• Hold Baby in a rocking chair or put her in a swing.

• Walk with Baby in a quiet, dark room while you hum or sing.

• Keep Baby away from highly stimulating situations.

• Lie on your back and lay your baby on top of you, tummy down, while massaging his back. (Transfer Baby to his bed if he falls asleep.)

• Take Baby for a ride in the car.

• Play soothing music or turn on white noise such as a vacuum cleaner or running water, or play a CD of nature sounds.

• Breastfeed on-demand.

• If breastfeeding, avoid foods that may cause gas in your baby.

• Eliminate one possible cause for a few days and see if it makes a difference. The most common baby tummy o enders are dairy products, ca eine, cabbage, broccoli and other gassy vegetables.

• If bottle feeding, o er more frequent but smaller meals; experiment with di erent formulas with your doctor’s approval.

• If bottle feeding, try di erent types of bottles and nipples that prevent air from entering your baby as he drinks, such as those with curved bottles or collapsible liners.

At 8 months old, Ronan still had colic but it was easing. I think the main and most annoying thing I can tell you is, “this too shall pass.” But it’s a lot easier on all of you who care for the baby to not place blame or scold — especially since tension is a trigger. Work on the good vibes!

Stress & Your Toddler

“Use your words!” a mother hisses firmly to her little boy melting down in the toy section at Target. It’s the perfect spot for a tantrum — the shiny, slippery floor allows the body to slide and glide with minimal effort.

Mommy’s face is mad, the little boy thinks. I can’t stay! I want to stay! I have to put the toy down and Mommy won’t let me have it. Bad Mommy! I can’t deal! I can’t deal! Whaaaaaat’s happening to me???? Oh my tummy, oh my tummy!!!

Now the little one’s pain threshold is at about a zero. The fear/worry/anxiety/irritation/anger all wraps together into a big, uncomfortable ball inside pretty much the way it does for an adult, only the child’s brain isn’t developed enough to know how to self-control. And so he falls apart.

Many parents have no idea how stress affects their children. But adults (please turn the page)

Children ages 2, 3 and 4 are not capable of expressing their feelings as well as an older child can.

So, you really can’t expect them to.

toddler days

DO know how they may react to something new or difficult or unpleasant ... so it can be a major clue into understanding their young child. In fact, anything within a family structure that’s unpleasant can cause stress to a child age 0 - 3, especially if it’s causing stress to others in the home. Sometimes a child’s stress exhibits as a tummy ache.

A major decade-old study (with current relevance) examining children age 4 and older found that in 90 percent of the kids, there was no diagnoseable issue tied to their stomach pain. The children were growing normally, had normal appetites, were able to sleep through the night and appeared to be healthy apart from their abdominal pain.

Young children experiencing stress may show regressive behaviors through thumb-sucking, clinginess or eating or sleep disturbances. When these types of behaviors are shown, it is so much better to provide extra comfort and reassurance to your child than to admonish them in any way. Avoid piling on stress by not saying things like, “You’re such a baby.” Or allowing older children to say that, either.

Some little ones may have potty regression.

“Our little girl was doing great with potty training until we moved into a new apartment,” says Keely Braff of Smyrna. “It was like she just forgot everything she had learned. She also got a lot more clingy and then it was like a lightbulb went off for me. Oh! She’s freaked out by the change! We had been so busy doing everything that we sort of lost track of her,” Braff admits.

STRESSORS MAKE A LONG LIST

Many factors can cause stress in children, says Elizabeth Pantley, author of The No-Cry Sleep Solution (McGraw Hill; 2020). Some of the most common causes of stress in children, from 18 months to 18 years old include:

Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety can be a major cause of stress not only for babies but for toddlers and preschoolers, too.

“Though separation anxiety is often a healthy response to being separated, it can also be a reaction to an unrelated stressor, such as a new home or a new daycare,” Pantley explains. “When there’s a life stressor, kids’ tolerance for other frustrations tends to go down.” This can lead to increased clinginess, difficulties with goodbyes, or nervousness about being away from mom and dad.

Family Changes

Major family changes such as death, divorce, a parent’s job loss or just parents arguing in the home can cause stress to a young child.

“The combination of heightened emotions, disrupted schedules and unfamiliar routines can make even the most relaxed child feel some tension,” Pantley says. Even positive changes, like the birth of a sibling, can be stressful. Change can equal stress, so if there is a significant impact on the way life has normally been, know that stress will be the result.

Daily Stressors

Little stressors in life that don’t seem to be a big deal to older kids can add up and cause a young child to be stressed. In addition, some young children have daily stress in their lives, such as poverty, neighborhood violence, family conflict, a parent who is absent or who frequently disap-

points or family members engaged in drug or alcohol abuse, illegal activity and so on. Any of these factors can lead to stress and anxiety in kids.

ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR CHILD’S FEELINGS

There may be no perfect way to help your child avoid stress because life is happening all around us all of the time and it’s ... stressful! But keeping the awareness that your children are young and not as capable as you are at dealing with hard things is a great first step toward helping them along. Some ways to help them destress when the going gets tough:

”It’s important to stay calm and acknowledge your child’s feelings,” Pantley says. “But don’t go overboard.” You want to convey that you understand your child’s feelings, but that nothing bad is likely to happen when you are apart, and your child can handle whatever comes up. Your child can learn that they don’t have to be immobilized by stress or fear. Engaging in a matter-of-fact empathy may be the most soothing way to approach your child’s stress.

For instance, a child who doesn’t want to go to daycare. You can say, “I know, this is really hard. I know you really don’t want to go, you’re having fun at home,’ but then continue your usual routine and then head out the door as planned. This way, “all of your language is basically saying ‘I completely understand, but we’re still going,’” Pantley says.

Stick With the Plan

Routines are very important for toddlers as schedules help them to feel in control and “go a long way in creating a sense of calm,” Pantley says. It’s also helpful to keep a consistent bedtime because children of all ages can become stressed when they are overtired.

“To help your child cope with the stressors of life, make certain that he is getting a good night’s sleep, adequate naptime, healthy meals and plenty of daily activity,” Pantley says.

Plan and Allow for Processing

Build in adequate time for rest breaks, naps and preparation for activities. Young children “live according to a much slower clock than adults do,” Pantley explains. “They don’t give a thought to what they might be doing next. They pause as they watch the cat sleep, examine the color patterns in the carpet and stare out the window. So examine your schedule to make sure you’re focusing on priorities and taking time to enjoy your child’s company,” she adds.

Make sure that you’re not taking away any special moments by rushing to the next item on your schedule.

Your young child has a right to have fun in his childhood and you can work to decrease some of the stressors that may take away from that. No matter what, your awareness of your young child’s needs can help you parent them with kindness, compassion and understanding — even in the middle of Target.

6 Ways to Reach a Teenage Girl

The new CDC statistics are grim: There’s been a huge spike in suicidal thoughts among teenage girls (and boys aren’t doing great either). In a dangerous world, parents need to connect with their teens more than ever.

Ashocking new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms what many parents already suspect: Teenage girls are in crisis. A 2021 survey of more than 17,000 high school students found that 30 percent of the girls had considered suicide — a rate that’s double that of boys and almost 60 percent higher than 10 years ago. Besides the unprecedented rise in suicidal behavior, the report shared other grim findings on sexual violence, substance misuse, depression and other mental health woes. Most parents receive news like this with a sinking feeling and a sense

of dread. After the COVID years and the flood of stories on drug addiction, broken mental health and the relentlessness of social media, should we be surprised? Maybe not, but we do feel helpless to do anything about it.

The good news is that, actually, we aren’t helpless, says national recovery advocate David Magee, author of the upcoming book Things Have Changed: What Every Parent (And Educator) Should Know About the Student Mental Health and Substance Abuse Crisis (Matt Holt; August 2023). Because the crisis is so current, Magee is ready to share what his work and research has shown him now. Despite the message

you may be getting from all-grim news reports — not to mention your teen’s closed door, perpetual silence and sullen stares — your girls are reachable.

“I’ve engaged with some 20,000 middle and high school students throughout the country in the past year,” says Magee, host of The Mayo Lab Podcast. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been talking about my own depression or my daughter’s eating disorder and looked out into the audience to see girls just wiping away flowing tears,” he says.

“Also, they are the ones lining up to talk to me the most,” he adds. “It just breaks my heart, but it also warms my heart because they are reachable. A critical key is to be there with them and for them — really see them and hear them.”

None of this is to suggest boys are not struggling, too. They certainly are. Magee’s own son died of an accidental drug overdose in 2013. Magee learned the hard way that boys need just as much parental attention, empathy and understanding as girls do. The question is, regardless of gender, how do you reach your teens? Magee offers six few tips:

1. Reaching Your Teens

First, get the lay of the land. (Educate yourself.) Young people face a cauldron of pressures their parents can’t relate to. That’s why Magee joined with the University of Mississippi’s Thomas Hayes Mayo Lab to create The Mayo Lab Podcast. This weekly program — available on all podcast platforms — brings together top thought leaders in various arenas (mental health, drug misuse prevention and parenting) so parents can access them in one place.

“The idea is to offer research-based insights and guidance to equip parents to start a different conversation in their kid’s lives,” says Magee. “If we don’t know the realities our kids face, we can’t talk about them in a meaningful way.”

2. Hold regular conversations to normalize feelings.

Make it a priority to engage with your teens over meals and activities. Broach conversations on subjects you might suspect they are dealing with — bullying, eating disorders, substance misuse — and don’t be afraid to state the blunt facts. However, remember the goal here is to engage your teens on what they may be feeling, not to lecture, “catch” or shame.

“Your teens may seem to prefer sitting in silence, but don’t let them,” says Magee. “Too often parents just follow their teen’s lead because it feels too uncomfortable to force the conversation or — as is very often the case — because we don’t know what to say.”

3. Ask open-ended questions.

(This is critical.) Many parents preach or hold one-sided conversations with their kids. Resist this urge. Instead, ask questions focused on how they feel, rather than thrusting your angst and fear upon them. For

example: “How did you feel when your friends were out together Friday night while you were at home with us?” or, “How did it feel when the names were posted for making the team and yours was omitted?”

“Studies show young people need to be seen and heard to become whole,” says Magee. “Open-ended questions open your teen’s mind and yours. Their responses hold the capacity to inform and surprise and even deeply delight.”

4. Listen closely and you may hear clues.

(The word “anxiety” is one.) Magee calls anxiety the “safe word” for today’s generation. While they may not admit to substance misuse or depression, they will often claim anxiety. This is your cue to continue asking open-ended questions, like, “When are you most likely to feel anxiety? How would you describe what your anxiety feels like? What do you think would make you feel better?”

5. Resist the urge to tell them how they should feel.

Yur instinct may be to say things like, “You have so many friends!” or, “You’ve got that big game coming up — there’s so much to be happy about!” While you may do this with pure intentions, it is not helpful, says Magee. If you really want to know your child, you must do less telling and more listening. Often, telling your teen how they feel is a reflection of our own desires to shape them into who or what we think they should be, rather than helping them explore what brings them joy.

6. Share relatable stories when appropriate.

“I am a huge believer in using storytelling to help people grasp a message in a real and heartfelt way,” says Magee.

“When parents tell teens about their own struggles with substance misuse, for example, it can be incredibly powerful. They probably recognize it anyway,” he says.

Obviously, Magee says, none of this is easy. In fact, it’s the sheer complexity of the mental health and substance misuse epidemic and all its moving parts that led to the creation of the William Magee Institute for Student Wellbeing at the University of Mississippi. But one thing is undeniable: Holding conversations should be a top priority for parents with quiet, withdrawn teens, says Magee.

“Engaging with your teens this way is just as important as putting food on the table,” he says. “You wouldn’t think of not nourishing your child’s physical health with regular meals. The same goes for nourishing their mental health. These conversations, along with ensuring that teens get plenty of sleep and exercise and limit their time on social media, go a long way toward changing their reality.”

Fun spring activities the whole family can enjoy!

My family of seven is always on the hunt for places to enjoy or to take our out of town guests. Looking for the perfect spring outing? Gaylord Opryland’s many ‘Once Upon a Spring’ activities are taking place now through May! Walking through the atriums and enjoying the fresh flowers and bright colors is a treat — but it’s the family activities that make the outing outstanding.

ACTIVITIES GALORE

We began our fun at the Adventure Kids Clubhouse (offered weekends through May 14 for $10.99 a ticket). While most of the guests are Littles, everyone in my fam (five kids ages 5 - 15) enjoyed painting a flower pot and making compass bracelets. My husband and I got creative, too, and had fun being kids again.

Next up: the Spring-A-Long Scavenger Hunt (daily through May 14 for $13.99 a ticket). We wound through the Delta Atrium looking for clues among the lush flowers and fruit trees. This engaging was more challenging than expected, but our teens helped our Littles and all enjoyed — especially the prize at the end!

Our Delta Boat EGG-stra Fun Cruise (daily through April 9 for $15.99 a ticket) is something everyone should do at least once. The inside resort cruise makes for a sweet little ride among exotic plants

This unique Easter event at New Hope Hermitage (6010 S New Hope Rd., Hermitage) combines the excitement of an egg hunt with the vibrancy of a color run. Get ready to be covered head-totoe in vibrant chalk colors as you hunt for eggs. All the kids will be given color bombs to throw, and volunteers will shower you with different colored powders as you race to find eggs. There will also be music, food and games for all ages from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

and foliage. A comical captain provided fun and interesting facts about the resort as we cruised. Since we were driftingalong at sunset, colors streamed through the glass atrium and we also caught the nightly fountain and light show from our seats in the boat.

And then of course, Sound Waves! (Reserve guaranteed admission through the SoundWaves Water Experience package that includes an overnight stay). We have enjoyed many water attractions all around the country. This one is special. Calming colors, cleanliness and no obnoxious chlorine smell! My kids loved it — especially the Lazy River.

Get yourselves to Gaylord to enjoy some real spring festivities (including an Easter Bunny meet-and-greet, interactive show, brunch and more). We’ll have to make it an annual family tradition!

Q: Everybody knows the classic tale. How does this version pay homage to the original beloved story?

A: Hip Hop Cinderella is like an amazing remix of a song. While there are new surprises in store, the familiar melody is there. Many parts of the classic story are there — stepmother, stepsisters, prince, ball — but it’s all in outer space!

Q: How has the story been adapted into a modern version for younger audiences?

A: Unlike other versions, this one is all about Cinderella finding and believing in her own voice. While helped by her robot creation "Runka," she doesn’t need a prince to find herself and have a happy ending. She creates her own!

Q: What part of this show are you most excited for kids and families to see?

A: This production is going to showcase projections and use technology in ways we haven’t yet. We also have a guest choreographer, Dominic Moore-Dunson!

Q: What about this story do you think audiences will connect most with?

Q: What role does music play?

A: Rona Siddiqui’s score is a character in itself. It gives the show a pulse and a beat that feels funky and futuristic.

Q: How about the creative process?

A : The team has created an aesthetic that is very original; imagine Madonna’s 1990 MTV Vogue performance, meets Wakanda Forever, meets Beyonce.

Q: What’s the funnest and hardest part about revamping classic stories with fresh takes?

A: It’s about delivering surprise. It’s delivering something everyone knows, but having them feel like they’ve never seen it before. It’s about finding growth in characters that traditionally haven’t had any.

Q: What do you hope families will be talking about on the way home?

A: In addition to the “how did they do that?” discussion, I hope families talk about Ella’s character journey and also about the sense of community at the end of the play. Character’s past wrongs are forgiven … I think that will send a powerful message.

Q: Why do you think it’s important for kids to experience live theater?
