Summer Days That Stretch Up to Dinnertime

The kitchen screen door bangs shuts behind me as I fly across the wet yard heading to the pond, my little sister trailing behind me. Her legs are half the length of mine; I can see her blondeness trying to keep up. It’s another summer day on Grenoble Manor Farm, and my great fortune is that Mom and Dad have rented this farm until we can find a permanent place. I hope it’s here, I hope it’s here, I hope it’s here.

It won’t be here; we’ll rent this farm for about a year before we have to move to another house on a busier road, no pond, a meager backyard, but a backyard nonetheless. Mom always insisted on that. She wanted her kids playing outside. I can still see her snapping o the TV before her indignant brood of couch potatoes. So we were forced to build forts, Barbie mansions, playhouses out of odd things we’d gather from our garage and at one house they rented, a chicken coop at the edge of the yard. We rode bikes, sprayed hoses, built obstacle courses and pretended we were in the Olympics.

For now, it’s early morning and a whole day looms ahead. Frogs, sticks, insects, muck, the matted muddy path around the lapping water, twining, reaching vines, a world of possibilities and us, my ‘lil sis and I in our outside heaven.

I’m here to advocate for summer days that stretch long ways to dinnertime. I’m not here to knock anyone’s proclivity for video gaming or binge-watching shows, but when it comes to kids, give me a rambunctious 8-year-old on a summer day mission in a worn-out t-shirt and shorts any day.

Give me the chance to wipe out a morning with no awareness of time. Let me run back home when hunger calls to slap together a fast peanut-butterand-jelly sandwich and gobble it down before racing out again, no questions asked. Give me a meager bamboo pole that can catch a fish that will wiggle oily and cold in my hand as I try to pry the hook from its hardened lips, toss it back, try again. Let me run to the stoney springhouse at the pond’s edge and use my weight to open the door, step over the broad, flat rocks set in mud; chilly respite from a smoldering July. Let me take in the cold reminder of olden days, stoney ones filled with ghosts and pilgrims and hoop skirts with wet hems hauling buckets of fresh drink to the main house.

Thought: Cell phones are expensive not only literally, but figuratively. Parenting changes dramatically when you have to babysit a device, enforcing safety, balance, good choice-making. It’s exhausting. With kids getting iPads and Smartphones earlier and earlier, consider this: the adventure of summer camp is more valuable to a kid’s heart than a phone in his hand. My sister and I wouldn’t swap our summer day adventures for anything. Think about that as you make plans for your kids for this upcoming summer. Planning time is ramping up.

Summer days spent outside is a healthy rite of passage for kids — and one that you actually need them to experience. Be like my Mom snapping o the TV in front of my siblings and me. We didn’t like it at first, but she pushed us out into the world where we discovered ourselves. I’ll take summer camp adventures of all kinds over the mindless scrolling found on TikTok any day. Oh, and I’ll take that with a s’more, please.

FEEDBACK

breastfeeding & depression

“Definitely talk to your healthcare provider about breastfeeding on the meds. But I highly recommend Zoloft. I was treated with it for post-partum and it helped. You can take it and breastfeed at the same time.”

“I had issues with depression before my pregnancy and then towards the last half of it, we found out that my son had a severe heart defect. Due to the nature of his defect, he couldn’t nurse, but I did pump to provide for him. I was put on Zoloft because it is safe while providing for your baby. It helped me a lot.”

“I went on Prozac light dose during the third trimester with my second child after struggling with postpartum after my first baby. It made a difference and

I even pumped breast milk for him for his first year. It’s one of the oldest antidepressants so they’ve had more time to study it. Do what you need to do to take care of you and in turn you will be a better mom. You’re already a great mom for realizing you need help.”

“I’m not currently breastfeeding, but I want to applaud you for reaching out and for sharing that you’re depressed. That’s a huge step and I’m proud of you!”

“I’ve been on Lexapro for five or six years. Through two pregnancies and breastfeeding my second baby still. There are plenty of options that are safe for mom and baby.”

“There is so much stigma around this. Starting Zoloft changed my life. I’m now on something different after ending my nursing experience with baby two. It didn’t change anything except to make me a more emotionally available parent to both children.”

“I know it sounds crazy but chiropractic adjustments were my fix for PPD with my second kiddo. It was a horrible 10 months, but I adjusted and it was like the world was taken off my shoulders. I was put on meds when I left the hospital with my third to not have the same issues, bu itt had too many side effects for me. Speak with your OB; they’ll know what’s safest while breastfeeding.”

Crystal Cameron

“I took antidepressants after each of my three children because I struggled with post partum depression. None of my children have exhibited any long term effects from me doing so. My kids are 15, 12, and 7 now. Definitely talk to your medical provider and make sure you make your wishes known that you want to continue breastfeeding. Good job reaching out and getting what you need!”

EDITOR’S NOTE:

If you are considering taking any medications while breastfeeding please consult with your doctor first to find what’s best for you.

You’re

Having a baby is such an exciting time, but it can feel a bit stressful, too. You might get loaded up with diapers at your baby shower only to one day realize you need a larger size and you’re stuck with boxes of smaller ones.

Expenses rise dramatically when a new baby is on board and conflicts are bound to happen. No worries. Develop a little financial awareness for spending and saving in your new life as a family.

DIAPER NEED$

Plan on an average of:

SIZE 1: 13 packs of 40

SIZE 2: 15 packs of 37

SIZES 3: 27 packs of 36

SIZE 4: 17 packs of 23

SIZE 5+: as needed

Track how many diapers your baby uses the first few months and then adjust your per month usage down to fit your baby exactly.

soon to bring a new baby home, or maybe you already have a baby. Before you go broke, discover financial ideas and savvy advice for all stages of life with Baby.

SAY, “BUDGET,” BABY by Janeen

BEFORE BABY

The secret to saving and finding the best deals on quality items is planning, researching and comparing prices. Estimate costs you might incur and write a spending plan. While everything won’t unfold as expected, some things may work out better. If the stork sneaks up on you, start planning as soon as possible.

• Review Health Insurance and Savings Plans. Choose a plan in which the premium to deductible ratio is the best price and value for pregnancy and childbirth care. Most health insurance policies cover the cost of breast pumps. Make sure yours does. If you have disability insurance, it may pay for maternity leave. Most importantly, start saving. Savings give a sense of peace and keep the focus on the baby in your arms instead of on financial burdens.

• “Flex” financial muscles. Check to see if your employer offers a Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account. These pre-tax dollars can be used to buy prenatal vitamins, breast pumps, breast milk storage bags, thermometers and more. While you can purchase over-the-counter baby pain relievers, teething gel and fever reducers with an FSA or HSA, check with your insurance company. Some require prescriptions for over-the-counter medications.

• Calculate the cost of different types of child care. Think about which option of childcare makes the most sense for your family — staying at home with Baby, a daycare facility, nanny, or nanny share. Research the costs associated with these options. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services considers childcare affordable when it accounts for no more than seven percent of a family’s household income. Try to keep your child care costs within that range.

PREGNANCY

Create a chic nursery without the designer price tag. Start with a safety-approved crib and add another desirable piece. This is what Emily Zolan did. Zolan is mom to Julia, two years and Anna Katherine, 6 months. “I researched and found a particular crib that I knew was safe,” Zolan said. “I found it on Facebook Marketplace for $200 when it is usually $1,000. Then I got a glider from Costco; you are going to be sitting in the nursery a lot, so you want to love it.”

• Register and be rewarded Create a baby registry at Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target or Buy Buy Baby and receive free baby goodies and other perks like coupons and discounts on the items left unpurchased on your registry. The free gifts usually include samples of products you can try out when the baby arrives. You can decide what works best before you spend money on baby items you won’t use.

“Be choosy with your registry,” Zolan suggests. “People naturally like to give sweet baby clothes and fun gifts. Pare down your registry to the necessities, and you may still get the fun, cute things you want.”

GREAT DEALS, BABY

FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE

If you have a Facebook account, you can shop for anything you can imaging including baby gear and boutique baby clothes.

BABYCENTER’S SWAP GROUPS

Community message boards to exchange baby gear.

RECRIB

AFTER ARRIVAL

Amazon has a group gifting feature that allows expectant moms to set up a diaper fund. Friends and family give to the fund and the money is loaded on to the expectant parents’ gift card balance.

Sikedra Lamar, mom to 21-month-old Ailani, uses this strategy. “I like the diaper fund because I can buy diapers as I need them,” Lamar says.

Disposable diapers like organic, plantbased or chlorine-free can be pricey. Try a diaper subscription to cut down on costs if you want these specialty diapers. It’s OK to be frugal when it comes to formula.

Breast milk is free and has tremendous nutritional benefits, but it doesn’t work out for every mom. Save on formula without skimping on what your baby needs.

If you buy a name brand, go to the company website and sign up for coupons and online deals. Ask your doctor for free samples and ask other moms for samples they don’t want. Keep in mind that all baby formula is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration to meet certain nutritional requirements.

Norris discovered this with her second child. “As first-time parents, we were nervous so we paid more for the name brand,” Norris says. “I talked to my pediatrician, and we used store brand with our second child, and she’s been fine.” Norris says she did a side-by-side comparison of the name-brand formula with the store brand. “They both had the same ingredients,” she says.

• Find High-End Baby Clothing on the Cheap

Wait until the end of the season and buy for the next year to get upscale or designer clothing at rock bottom prices. If your child outgrows the size you buy before the next year, you can always consign the items or regift to another expectant parent.

Normalize Therapy for kids

Everybody, everywhere at some point in their lives needs someone to talk to, seriously, about what’s going on inside their head and heart. Look at your life: all of the things you’ve been through, the ups and downs, the wins and the losses, the grievances and the shocks. The adult things. You can’t go through your life without a confidante, a caring friend. We all need someone aware enough to notice when something’s wrong with us and brave enough to say something when they notice.

All adults need someone.

All kids need someone.

We need to normalize that because we’re all a bit ... anxious.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, upwards of 5.8 million children have anxiety. The numbers have gotten so high that in October 2022, a panel of medical experts recommended for the first time that primary care doctors screen all kids ages 8 to 18 for anxiety. The goal is to try and reduce the number of kids whose mental health conditions go undetected and untreated — and that’s a lot of kids.

Although no one can say definitively why so many kids are anxious today, experts say a big culprit is social media. Using TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram or some other preferred app has a big impact on how kids communicate — or not — today.

Jean M. Twenge, a research psychologist and author of the books iGen (Atria; 2018) and Generation Me (Atria; 2014) says it’s tough for kids to handle the sophisticated “next level” that social media delivers. Young minds are often unequipped to deal with complex situations.

“Kids are spending as much as eight hours a day on social media where there’s a lot of negativity, competition and jockeying for status,” Twenge reports. She says because of this, it’s imperative for parents to set limits on their kids’ technology use.

“It’s not only good for kids, but they appreciate it in the long run,” Twenge says.

So yes, you can do that. But what do you do now if you’ve noticed your child is anxious or closing themselves off in their room again on any given day? What action can you take at home and where do you turn if your instincts are flaring and telling you something just isn’t right for your child?

(please turn the page)

nashvilleparent.com february 2023 21 mental health by Susan Day
Read the tea leaves: kids need someone to talk to about their feelings and worries. Every human can benefit from having a parent, therapist or counselor to talk to because we ALL have issues to work through. Kids, being kids, need their parents to lead the way.

mental health

“The first step is for parents to be open to the idea that mental health challenges may a ect their family,” says Meg

“None of us are immune to conditions like anxiety and depression which a ect nearly one-third of Americans at some point in their lives,” she adds.

Next, be supportive by making space to learn about your child’s experiences and to look out for warning signs. These include persistent irritability, changes in sleep and appetite, isolation, low mood and loss of interest in things your child usually enjoys, or just not even being able to have fun, says Benningfield. Often, the thing that parents need to do first is to make some space to take care of themselves — the guidance from airlines to “put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others” is really important in caring for kids.

Talk About Hard Things With Your Kids

That little word called “time” becomes imperative when trying to reach an anxious child.

“Even if it’s just 10 minutes one morning, ask your child about specific events, experiences and allow them to open up to you,” says Katherine Spencer, Psy.D., Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Division of Psychology and Hospital Medicine, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

“Talk with your child about hard things,” Spencer says. “Learning about your child’s perception of events in school, home, community and even world events, can o er opportunities to support them with their own thoughts and feelings related to these situations; listen and reflect on what you are hearing them say,” she adds.

And don’t feel as though this is only happening in your home. Anxiety has crept itself into many young kids’ minds.

Benningfield says the most common mental disorder in kids are anxiety disorders.

“Anxiety disorders are di erent from ‘normal’ anxiety that everyone experiences,” says Benningfield. “When a child has an anxiety disorder, their fears and worries make it extremely hard to do things that they need to do – like go to school, participate in a group activity or sleep alone in their own bed at night. Through treatment that includes exposure therapy, these fears and worries can diminish over time.”

Exposure therapy — a psychological technique that helps people confront their fears — has been shown to be highly e ective in treating anxiety disorder among children and teens. Discuss this with your pediatrician if you think your child could benefit.

Healthy Habits and Emotional Talk

All parents want their children to be healthy, happy and successful in the world. For that reason, seeking guidance from other parents, your pediatrician or a mental health professional when you don’t know what’s going on with your child is important.

“Every child is di erent, but in general, children need a safe environment where they can explore and learn, opportunities to connect with other kids and space to develop at their own pace,” Benningfield says.

Take the lead with helping your anxious child by modeling healthy habits like getting enough rest, making time for physical activity and eating healthily, too. And make talking about feelings part of your daily language at home with your kids.

“Talking about emotions shows kids that feelings are an important part of how we experience the world,” Benningfield says. “Making space for feelings normalizes the experience and helps kids to learn strategies for coping when feelings get too big. One of a parent’s most important roles is modeling how to cope with di cult circumstances and how to regulate our reactions to hard things.”

If you’re concerned about your child, talk with your child’s doctor. Benningfield says many pediatricians are becoming more comfortable assessing and even starting treatment for kids with anxiety.

Hopefulness Helps

Research shows that hopefulness can dramatically reduce childhood anxiety. Look for inspiring news stories to share with your kids from time to time to help them find the bright side of life and also give them ideas on what to look forward to.

How to Help an Anxious Child to Calm Down

Knowing how to communicate with an anxious child is important to their well-being.

“I am here; you are safe.”

Anxiety has a way of making things look worse and feel scarier than when we are not feeling worried.

“Tell me about it.”

Give your child room to talk about their fears without interrupting. Some children need to have time to process through their thoughts. Do not o er solutions or try to fix it. Children sometimes do better with a set amount of time: “Let’s talk about your worries for 10 minutes.”

“How big is your worry?”

Help your child verbalize the size of their worry and give you an accurate picture of how it feels to them. They can represent their worry by using arm length (hands close together or arms stretched wide apart) or by drawing three circles on a paper (small, medium and large) and choosing the one that applies.

“What do you want to tell your worry?”

Explain to your child that worry is like an annoying “worry bug” that hangs around telling them to be worried. Create a few phrases, then give them permission to talk back to this “worry bug.”

“Can you draw it?”

Many kids cannot express their emotions with words. Encourage them to draw, paint or create their worries on paper.

“Let’s change the ending.”

Anxious children often feel stuck in the same pattern without a way out. Help them see di erent options by telling their story, but leaving o the ending. Then, create a few new endings. Focus on your child conquering their fears with confidence.

“What other things do you know about (fill in the blank)?”

Some children feel empowered when they have more information about their fear (especially things like tornadoes, bees, elevators, etc.). Grab a book from the library, do a science experiment, research together online: How often does your fear happen? How do people stay safe?

It’s that time of year again: time to book kids now into summer camps

SUMMER CAMP PLANNING TIMELINE

INthese cold winter months, it’s hard to imagine that summer will ever return. But, planning and organizing the summer calendar for yourself and your kids is an essential winter activity! This is especially true if you plan to send your child to one or more summer camps. Summer camps start filling up in March, which means that families start researching and planning in January and February, according to the American Camp Association (ACA).

If you are looking to sign your child up for camp this summer, understanding the typical summer camp planning timeline matters. So too does knowing how to research camps. While many parents reserve camp session spots two-to-three months in advance, they first spend one-to-two months doing research and organizing their summer plans.

(please turn the page)

summer of ‘23

CAMP PLANNING TIMELINE

According to the American Camp Association, the best summer camp planning timeline for parents to follow is:

JANUARY + FEBRUARY:

Research camps and organize summer plans using a hard calendar so you can write down dates and post it for your kids to see. Attend the 2023 SUMMER CAMP ADVENTURE FAIR with your kids on Feb. 25 at CoolSprings Galleria. Begin booking local day camps.

MARCH + APRIL:

Continuing booking local camp(s) and sleep-away camps, too. Get physicals for your kids (required for camp paperwork).

MAY

Prepare your child for summer camp.

Research camps now

Use these tips to help you as you research summer camps for your child, seeking camps that are accredited, verified and perfect for your child.

LOOK AT REVIEWS. Have other kids like yours enjoyed the camp before? Reviews are a great place to start when you are deciding on a camp for your child. See what other families have enjoyed about their experience and see if they have any suggestions for the future. Peer comments are one of the best ways to determine if the camp is right for your child.

Continue your due diligence by checking out the camp’s website, which should have information about the owners, directors and staff.

ASK QUESTIONS. Asking questions is a great way to speak with the camp owner or director and get an understanding of the camp’s philosophy, safety measures, training procedures and more.

Match the camp to your child

One of the best ways to find the right summer camp for your child is to talk with them to see what they are interested in. Is your child into art or science? Does your child love to be outside exploring? Does she want to be in a show? Ask your kids what kind of activities and experiences they want during the summer, then find camps that fit those requests. Be sure to find out what your child’s friends are doing. Signing up with a friend can help them get more comfortable. While you want your child to make new friends at camp, having a buddy can help break the ice.

Try to choose a camp that is right for your child, not based on their age or what others are doing. For example, some young children are ready for longer day camps or even sleep-away camps before older children. Just because your child is a certain age, it does not mean she is ready. You know your child best: choose the type of summer camp that will help them succeed.

Janey Snyderman is a mother and freelance writer.

Give the gift of sleep-away camp

Our job as parents is to give our children the tools they need to go out in the world and discover who they are and what they want to become — their purpose in life.

What better place for children to begin this process than sleep-away camp? According to Michael Thompson, a clinical psychologist and author of Homesick and Happy: How Time Away from Parents Can Help a Child Grow, (Ballantine; 2012), “Parents can sometimes seriously impede their children’s development. As a parent, there are many things you cannot do for your children. You cannot give your child confidence, you cannot pick or manage his friendships, you cannot always be her advocate/agent/manager/coach … and most important, parents have a hard time urging their children to take psychological risks.”

Thompson goes on to explain how sleep-away camp succeeds at doing all these things and how critical it is that children and teens have these experiences. He says that true independence is something parents cannot give their children; they must live it on their own.

The Chance That Children Will Use Alcohol Increases as They Get Older. About 10 percent of 12-year-olds say they have tried alcohol, but by age 15, that number jumps to 50 percent. The sooner you talk to your children about alcohol, the greater chance you have of influencing their decision not to drink.

Marijuana

se tends to increase

While 1.8 percent of youths ages 12–13 reported consuming marijuana in the past year, that number increased to 11.3 percent of those ages 14–15 and 23.4 percent by ages 15–16.

What you say to your child about alcohol is up to you. But remember, parents who do not discourage underage drinking may have an indirect influence on their children's alcohol use.

• Be a positive adult role model.

• Be aware of risk factors.

• Support your kids and give them space to grow.

• Be prepared. Your child may become curious about alcohol; he or she may turn to you for answers and advice.

• Use ''natural'' opportunities such dinner time or while doing chores start open, honest conversations about drinking.

• Work with schools, communities, the government to protect children from underage alcohol use.
