and about those kids ...

W

THIS ‘N THAT About Living Here NOW FRIENDLY: Y’all, people living in

ith kids, you’re going to go through lots of ages and stages and you’ll need to know

what to do for education, birthdays, camps and lots more. You’re in good hands. Head to nashvilleparent.com and to “Digital Guides” and/or “Digital Editions” on the homepage menu bar to find what you need: The Baby Guide provides a world of new-parent resources for connecting you up to the area.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES KEY when raising kids

W

hen your child is born you get a birth certificate and a social security card, but these are not just cute pieces of paper for the baby book. These are important documents that you will need to hold onto for your child until they are old enough to be responsible for them. Keep the original to make copies and store them in a place that you will remember. You will need these items all through your child’s life for various reasons that include: • Registering your child for school A copy will do.

• Applying for a driver’s permit You will need an original birth certificate to apply for that all-important permit.

LOST BIRTH CERTIFICATE? If your child was born in Tennessee and you have lost his certificate, you can get an original copy from the Tennessee Vital Record office located at 710 James Robertson Parkway in downtown Nashville.

ACTIVE: It’s easy to stay active in Middle Tennessee with expansive greenways that span nearly 100 miles. The system encourages physical activity, outdoor play and fun, outdoor events. Find maps of individual trails and more at greenwaysofnashville.org.

FOOD: While good old meat-andthrees used to dominate the astronomic scene, Nashville is now considered one of the best food citiies in America according to U.S. News and World Report. We now have hard-to-get reservations at top restaurants on weekends and for brunches. Find a list of 38 essential Nashville restaurants at nashville.eater. com.

The Private School Directory can connect you to all of the independent schools in Middle Tennessee.

JOBS: In the past couple of years, Nashville has seen job opportunities soar across tourism, technology, healthcare, sales and service.

• Traveling abroad To get your child a passport, you will need official copies of birth certificates. • Signing up for youth sports leagues To get your child into any sports leagues, you will need to provide your child’s birth certificate to verify his age.

Middle Tennessee are among the friendliest you’ll ever come across and quick to be of service. Nashville is ranked by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the most friendly cities in the country. That said, it’s become a melting pot of people relocated from all around the country — especially California, many say — so we’re hoping it won’t be changing too much ... be friendly, y’all!

Nashville Parent’s digital Camp Guides come out each year in January, February and March.

LOW TAXES: Tennessee is one of nine states without a state income tax (and let’s keep it that way). Nashville DOES have a sales tax of 9.25% which is higher than the national average, but the state doesn’t have a separate tax on food, prescription drugs or most other items. And property taxes are relatively low compared to other parts of the country.

TESTING Most schools want to test a student’s ability to perform inside and outside the classroom to determine if they have the appropriate program for that student. Your child could be tested in either the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT; ssat.org) or the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE; erblearn.org/parents/isee-overview). Each of these tests focus on quantitative and verbal skills. Source: Tennessee Association of Independent Schools (taistn.com)

Match Your Child to the Right School

Y

Casa dei Montessori 7646 Hwy 70 S., Nashville, TN 37221 A Delicate Balance

ou put a great deal of effort into checking out the basics of a private school education

such as costs, location, academics and specializations, but that's only a part of the picture, says Dona Matthews, an educational specialist and co-author of Beyond Intelligence: Secrets for Raising Happily Productive Kids (House of Anansi; 2014). "There is no one size fits all," says Matthews. "No matter if it's one of the best schools, it's a question of looking at

the best fit for your child," she adds. Matthews suggests parents look at the whole child when matching to the right school. Is your child highly engaged or does he need opportunities? Is your child innately shy or will he do better in an encouraging, supportive environment? Does he have a special talent or specialized interest you want to make sure is nurtured? In addition, look at the culture of the school from the leadership on down. "How well do they communicate?" Matthews asks. "Is the leadership stable, and what is their reputation?" Matthews says you should visit the schools on your short list repeatedly. "Beyond open houses, go for a tour, talk to teachers and other people who aren't trying to promote the school," Matthews says. "Go with your child on a shadow day to see how he feels about it." Also, most schools are on social media. Get a real feel for day-to-day happenings on their Facebook and Twitter pages. Matching your child to the right school takes time. Start early and do your homework for the best outcome. Many parents cite the following reasons for choosing private school for their kids: class size; religious; focus on learning; and a strong connection between parents and the school.

Offering a range of programs and opportunities, MNPS has options to fit every family’s needs. Whether you are looking for advanced academics, themebased instruction or STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs, we offer the most choices to meet individual student needs — starting at Pre-K all the way through graduation.

ENSURING EQUITY FOR ALL STUDENTS Every student in every Nashville neighborhood should have the same access and opportunity to the high-quality education they deserve. Because we work diligently to know every student, we can identify disparities and remove systemic barriers to their success. These efforts help us foster an inclusive school system, while creating an equitable education for our students. MNPS students made remarkable progress in 2023, outpacing the state in 7 of 8 categories measured on annual TCAP assessments and meeting state growth in the 8th. Because of this academic growth, Metro Nashville Public Schools received Level 5 status for the second straight year.

Experiences AVID

VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), works to raise students’ expectations of themselves by establishing a college-going culture and helping students see what’s possible after high school. AVID is now in place in 60 MNPS schools, from elementary through high.

True to our Music City roots, the arts are an important focus in all grade levels. Our students participate in dance, music, theatre and the visual arts in our neighborhood schools throughout Nashville. These programs, including our thriving Music Makes Us program, receive support from the local music industry and valuable business partnerships.

ROBOTICS/STEAM

ATHLETICS

(SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART AND MATH) Schools across the district focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) instruction. Students are challenged to think critically, be creative, communicate and collaborate with their peers. Students learn how their specific skills fit into our complex world and have access to the technology, computer science and advanced academics they need to prepare and challenge them for whatever future they imagine.

Our athletic programs focus not only on physical health, but also provide student athletes with opportunities to develop higher standards of mental, moral, social and physical fitness through participation in extracurricular athletic programs. There are 14 TSSAA-sanctioned sports available in our high schools, while middle school students have seven different sports, sanctioned by the middle school athletics association.

Early Learning

Elementary School

Middle School

Metro Schools offers a nationally recognized Pre-K program where students focus on developing the skills they’ll need to succeed in elementary school and beyond. Families can apply to one of our four Early Learning Centers, one of our many growing schoolbased classrooms or our two Montessori programs. Studies show children in Pre-K develop literacy, language and math skills faster than their peers – and the benefits of Pre-K impact children into their teen and adult years. To learn more, visit earlylearning.mnps.org.

Across our 70 elementary schools, students thrive in fun and engaging hands-on lessons. Our academic team is committed to supporting a high-quality education for every student, every day, while aligning all instruction to the Tennessee State Academic Standards.

The middle school years are a pivotal phase for students developmentally, socially and academically. With Metro Schools, you’ll find caring school environments that encourage self-discovery and promote independence and responsibility while preparing students for high school.

• Rigorous advanced academics courses • Industry credential certifications • Dual enrollment and/or college credit EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS Students can fast track their college plans or begin building a career by simultaneously earning a high school diploma and college associate degree in just four years — and at no cost to families. School Options For more information about Enrolling in Metro Schools, visit mnps.org/school-options or call the Family Information Center at 615-259-INFO(4636).

To find your student’s zoned school, visit mnps.org/learn/register-forschool/find_my_school.

While families have many choices available through the Optional Schools Application Process, the perfect school for your student may be right around the corner in your neighborhood. A school tour is a great way to meet teachers and principals, observe classrooms and learn about academic programs. The Optional Schools Process allows families to choose among open enrollment schools in addition to their zoned school. Start with your community school, if it is not the right fit, visit schools.mnps.org for additional school options. WHAT IS A ZONED SCHOOL? Every child in Nashville is zoned for a specific elementary, middle and high school and is guaranteed a seat at that zoned, neighborhood school. Some areas also have more than one zone option, which give families guaranteed access to more than one school. Proof of residency is required to attend a zoned school. WHAT IS AN OPTIONAL SCHOOL? Optional schools fall into two categories: schools without a zone designed to attract students from all over town, such as magnet schools, and zoned neighborhood schools with available seats. Magnet schools often offer specialized programming and may have entrance requirements. Any Nashville student may apply for open seats at a zoned neighborhood school. IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED TO OPTIONAL SCHOOLS? Parents are responsible for transportation to optional schools unless otherwise indicated on the school choice application. All high school students can ride WeGo buses free through the StrIDe program. Middle school students attending school outside of their zone are also eligible to ride WeGo buses for free after parents complete a permission form at the school’s main office.

REGISTER FOR SCHOOL Students can register for school online orvisit any MNPS enrollment center. Enrollment centers are open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.–3:30 p.m. To register online or to find an enrollment center near you, visit mnps.org/register.
