rom the first time I saw her, she rocked my world. Delirious from childbirth (and thrilled that it was over), I gazed in awe at my firstborn as she warmed beneath the special lights in the delivery room. Tears filled my eyes and my husband’s too — she was here. The light of our world, our reason for being, we were a family at last and our dreams had come true. For me, from the time my daughter was born, I was a new person. This happens to women when they become mothers. We come into our own when we have something so precious to care for. I am not speaking for all women, but for the majority. Motherhood is what we are after as we grow into womanhood, fall in love, meet the right man. The proverbial biological clock might be a cliché, but no one can dispute the fact that women were designed to bear children. So when it finally comes true, it is a rebirth of sorts. You start new, each day has more newness in it and you are the number one most important person in the world to this fledgling human ... this personal miracle. Now don’t let me scare you, moms out there with a wonderful bundle of first baby on your hip! In fact, let me encourage you to love your role with a passion right now. Let me inspire you to relish in these early years as your little one looks to you for EVERYTHING as she listens to you, adores you, hugs on you and makes you more of a mother every day. But then let me warn you about what’s to come: My firstborn is 16 now. I can safely tell you that she still rocks my world, but it has more to do with how she’s abandoned me than to do with how much she needs me. And yet she does. At 16, she thinks she knows everything. At 16 she questions everything I say or advise. At 16, while I want to throw her on my hip and take her to the park, she wants me to throw her the keys instead so she can go her own way without me. When I was a new mom, I was exhausted most of the time just from the day-to-day maintenance of caring for someone who needed every little thing done for them. With a 16-year-old, I am exhausted by the fact that I can’t make her fall-in with my expectations anymore. I have one other teen son two years younger and then two more boys coming up, so I am a newbie in the realm of wise parents with teenagers. But I don’t want to give her up. I never wanted her to grow up too fast, but it happened anyway. I am here to tell you that THEY LEAVE YOU. Not physically, just yet, but figuratively. One day it happens that they have their own world, their own opinions, their own agenda. And they judge you. Your hair, your clothes, your cooking, your plans, your wrinkles. I was thinking about writing this ... about how it was so much easier when my daughter was little, because I was in charge. It was all about MY agenda and her going along with MY plans. Now it’s about HER agenda and my going along with HER plan. And I’m the worrying type. Oh well. Take heart in this: Here’s what doesn’t change. The rock-my-world part. The part that brings tears to your eyes. Every little joy or pain she experiences is mine, too. Just like when she was little. She continues to rock my world. And I wouldn’t change that for anything.

pril is Autism Awareness Month, so get ready to Walk Now For Autism, taking place at Coney Island, 6201 Kellogg Ave., on May 22. Families, friends, schools and more can form teams to raise money for Autism Speaks, one of the country’s largest organizations for funding research and increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders. The 1.5-mile walk runs through Coney Island park, and concludes with games, activities, refreshments, a resource fair and more. Coney Island will even open their rides for free from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. “It’s one of our favorite days of the year,” says Wendy Harpring, mom to 9-year-old Max and member of Max’s Movers and Shakers. “For one day, people understand you and your child’s needs. You can relax and enjoy the day with a supportive community.” And raising funds does more than just help Autism Speaks, according to 12-year-old Claire Joswick. Claire organized Sock Hops for Autism at her school and donated the money to her team’s total contribution. “It’s good to see kids helping out for a good cause,” she says. “It has educated kids and improved awareness at school.” Each registered walker who raises $150 will earn a t-shirt, and prizes will be awarded to top individual, team and company fundraisers. teve Sutton, M.D., from Allergy and Asthma Associates, Inc., sheds light on all things allergy and asthma-related.
What’s the difference between allergies and asthma? “When we talk about allergies, we think about the nose and the eyes, lots of sneezing and congestion,” he says, adding that the membranes in these areas are irritated by different triggers, such as pollen. “With asthma, it’s the same type of reaction, but in the lungs. Some patients may have allergy symptoms, but they also experience persistent coughing and maybe even wheezing.” Asthmatics can also experience triggers from other sources, like colds or exertion.
When should parents take their child to see an allergy and asthma specialist? “If symptoms are affecting your child’s quality of life — if they prevent him from participating in sports or getting enough sleep or doing well at school — then you need to see an allergist,” says Sutton. When it comes to allergies, many people are tolerant of the symptoms, especially if they are healthy otherwise, or if they are just accustomed to low-grade symptoms, Sutton says, like being around a pet. If you cannot manage your symptoms, you need guidance on what to do.
What can parents do to alleviate allergy symptoms at home? Installing stand-alone air filters in your home can help, suggests Sutton, but children with severe allergies can benefit from medication shots to strengthen immunity. Over time, a person is better able to tolerate exposure to allergic triggers.

amilies with ASD, a support group for families with autistic children, is doing their part to keep their members healthy. Recent studies suggest that many people with autism are overweight or are at risk for becoming overweight, yet sports rarely come up in conversations about autism. The benefits of athletic participation include not only weight management, but improved body awareness and coordination, better communication and social skills, and less stress for the participant. This April 10 and 11, area programs offering sports to people with autism will host a free clinic for families to try. Kids can explore cheerleading, soccer, yoga, wrestling, taekwondo, horseback riding and a general fitness program. We’ve
all heard the statements “breastfeeding is beautiful” and “babies are born to breastfeed,” but for many new moms, breastfeeding is not beautiful but rather exhausting, emotional, frustrating and even lonely. I have breastfed three children, and not once did the angelic choir sing for me or my face glow white in the beauty of what I was doing. However, breastfeeding is definitely amazing, and it is the natural way for new mothers to feed their babies. When we first find out we’re expecting, we immediately buy What to Expect When You’re Expecting (Workman; $24.95) along with the cutest pair of maternity jeans, and we make a list of registry items we must have. When do we think about preparing for breastfeeding? Most of my research tells me if new mothers prepare at all it comes in the form of a two-hour class at the local hospital. Please hear me now: This is not enough! As Dee Keith, a lactation consultant in private practice points out, “People get so wrapped up in the birth experience and take all these classes, but it’s ultimately one day of your life. Breastfeeding goes on for weeks and months, so you really need to prepare yourself.”

Determine your definition of “successful breast-feeding experience.”
I was determined not to give formula to any of my three children. I did lower my expectations for my second and third child because they were twins. I breastfed my oldest child for 18 months; my twins are now 11 months, and I am nursing them three times daily. Also for the twins, I knew we could not afford the kind of formula I would want for them, so I had the added resolve from a financial standpoint. Your successful breastfeeding experience might be exclusively breastfeeding until 6 months and complete weaning at 12 months. Your friends or sister might define this differently. Regardless, defining it for yourself helps keep you focused and motivated when you hit low or stressful points, especially in the first few weeks. Keith advises moms keep in mind that anything worth doing — like breastfeeding — is worth putting in the effort.

Build a list of names of local experts to be on your team.
Rebecca Leach, R.N., a board certified lactation consultant, from the Center for Breastfeeding Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), advises expecting mothers to contact the childbirth education department at the hospital where they plan to deliver. Most area hospitals have International Board Certified Lactation Consultants on staff, and this person will be an invaluable resource to you, especially because there are so many variables for breastfeeding moms, Leach says. Some mothers breeze through it, some mothers experience latching difficulties, and some mothers may have trouble with their milk supply. Lactation consultants have seen it all, and will be able to address your specific needs. Also on your list might be a friend who has successfully breastfed, your mom or sister (to tell you how awesome you are and what a great job you are doing) and a La Leche League representative in your area (see our Breastfeeding & Newborn Services listing on page 20). Most importantly, according to Keith, you should “surround yourself with people who support what you want to do.” Well-meaning family members who didn’t breastfeed might not offer the support you’ll need. Without encouragement and understanding, it can be easy to give up on breastfeeding. As Leach points out, a strong support network can “make the difference between sticking with it or quitting.”

Go ahead and purchase a breast-feeding book ahead of time.
Don’t wait until after the baby comes and you have questions that can’t be quickly answered. I needed a breastfeeding book for multiples and had to locate one, then pay overnight shipping because I needed it so badly. “It’s really important for expecting moms to get some information under their belts, so to speak,” says Keith. She recommends visiting the Ohio Breastfeeding Alliance web site (ohiobreastfeedingalliance. org) for links to resources and recommended reading. Leach likes The Nursing Mother’s Companion by Kathleen Huggins (Harvard Common Press, $14.95), and La Leche League International’s The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding ($14.95 at llli.org) and The Breastfeeding Answer Book ($55.95 at llli.org).

There is a lot of help out there for new moms! I did not know how much help there was until I began helping others have a successful breastfeeding experience. There are hotlines, online chats, articles on how dads can help, local leaders who offer weekly or monthly meetings, and much more. The Center for Breastfeeding Medicine offers its services to all women – mothers of preemies, multiples and typical, healthy babies. Moms can call them at 513-636-2326 and talk to a lactation consultant over the phone, or schedule an appointment with one of the center’s nurses or physicians. Find this kind of information before the baby comes and have it at your fingertips when you need it. And when you need those resources, says Keith, be sure to use them. “Talk to someone who knows,” she advises. “It’s better to ask them than to wait, because the longer you wait to solve a breastfeeding problem, the harder it will be.”
Keith advises moms to go ahead and get a couple of good nursing bras, as well as some nursing pads. I could not have had a successful breastfeeding experience without my electric, double pump. I pump and store milk, so I keep the freezer bags handy. In addition, I researched and chose bottles that had nipples as natural as possible but used bottles rarely. Bottles are not recommended until breastfeeding is completely established — the associated time frame is usually four to six weeks. Keith says that you may not need a breast pump, especially if you had a healthy, full-term baby and things are going well. But if you do decide to purchase one, she recommends Hygeia, Medela or Ameda brands. Proceed carefully, however. Leach points out that you may not want to spend the money on a pump until you find out how things go with your newborn — you might find that all goes well and you have no need for a pump, or you might find yourself in a situation where a hospitalgrade rental pump is recommended. Newly expectant moms should begin thinking about breastfeeding well before the baby arrives to increase the likelihood of a successful experience. Make sure your breastfeeding wishes are included in your birth plan or communicated to your doctor or nurse. If at all possible, try to breastfeed your baby during the first hour after delivery. Also, alert the nursery staff so they won’t give your baby bottles or pacifiers in the nursery. Breastfeeding is the natural and best way to transfer nutrition and immunity properties to your baby. It also promotes healing for you, might help you lose weight more quickly and might also decrease your risk for breast cancer. I do hope the angelic choir sings and your face glows white with the beauty of what you are doing. But if neither happens, know you are doing what is best for your baby and with the resources out there and being prepared before the baby comes, you have every reason to expect a successful breastfeeding experience! Babyhood can be daunting for new dads. Here’s one pop’s top 10 tips for making fatherhood fun and successful.
What
I’m about to tell you is critically important. During the first five months of being a new dad, I discovered the key to fatherhood — the secret to being a really great dad. And I’m willing to share this information with you for the low, low price of $19.99. Just kidding. Like most occupations in life, there is no “secret” to being really great at something. In the case of fatherhood, the best dads seem to be the ones who spend as much time as possible being a dad. There is no substitute — not toys, not money, not ponies — for spending time with your child. I’m by no means an expert, but there are a few other things I’ve learned in my time as a dad that you might find helpful in your own journey. Take ownership of a “daddy job.” Identify one or more of the really thankless baby tasks and make it your own. What most people call a “dirty diaper,” my wife calls a “daddy diaper.” I clean up the baby’s poop, and it makes my wife’s day so much more enjoyable. Other good “daddy jobs” include being the official baby photographer and being the official assembler of stuff (cribs, toys, etc.). (please turn the page)

Learn baby lingo. A father who knows baby terms impresses the heck out of people. Just a little studying goes a long way. For instance, when your wife asks your thoughts on a “convertible car seat,” you’ll know not to get too excited. Purchasing a new ragtop is out of the question at this time. She just wants to know if you like the car seats that accommodate infants and toddlers. And, when you tickle the newborn’s feet and the baby flares his toes upward, you can tell everyone you just administered the Babinski’s reflex test. No joke.

Be a grandparent ambassador. Believe me, grandparents can be extremely helpful. That’s why they call them “grand.” As a dad, reach out to them. If they live nearby, invite them over to visit or babysit. If they live out of town, e-mail photos often. Just remember, don’t abuse the generosity of grandparents. Always leave them wanting more. Make time for your wife. You must make sure that your relationship remains top priority. Get a babysitter on regular occasions and get out of the house! Arrange for Grandma and Grandpa to come for a whole weekend and get out of town! Unleash your creativity, not your wallet. It’s very tempting as a new dad to go out and buy your little one everything in sight. Don’t. First of all, relatives and friends will undoubtedly shower you with more than enough newborn gear. Second, babies just don’t need that much stuff. My 5-month-old son is as equally enthralled by my wiggling fingers in his face and making funny noises as he is with any high-tech toy. Another rule of thumb, buy items as the child grows and needs them, not months or years in advance. Buy a good backpack for baby stuff. There’s nothing worse than a father walking his baby around town with a pink Hello Kitty diaper bag strapped around his neck. Come on, now. Of the “must buys,” this is one. Find a nice black or navy blue backpack or diaper bag that is designed to hold all the bottles, changing mats, etc. Job share with your wife. Yes, raising a baby takes a lot of work and, especially in the first few months, a lot of odd hours. The worst scenario is to have both parents physically exhausted every day. I suggest some job sharing. Split up the late-night shifts and be willing to pitch in on housework and meal preparation. Learn how to do everything with one hand. Babies love to be held. Therefore, you’ll need to learn how to do things with one hand like preparing bottles, writing checks, turning the channel, etc. Of course, there are limits to this. Never attempt to eat dessert holding a little one. Good pieces of pie have hit the floor this way. Finish big home projects before the baby arrives. This one applies to new-dads-to-be and let me be blunt: for goodness sake, do it now, man! Once the baby arrives, you’ll either be hiring someone to complete the project or you’ll be scheduling it for many years down the road.

Memorize a few signature songs. It’s a biological fact that women know the words to more songs than men. While we were playing football in our youth, the girls (one of whom is now the mother of your child) were off singing and dancing. Since babies love to be sung to, you are seemingly at a disadvantage. But don’t despair. Knowing a few signature songs will get you by. Sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” “Old MacDonald” or whatever else you know. Take this grand opportunity to take yourself less seriously and focus on wackiness, laughter and fun. There is no joy quite like seeing your baby smile as you sing “My Sharona.” Enjoy! J
