Let's UP the Breastfeeding Rate!

BABY bits

While breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of your infant's life is recommended by the American Academy of Pedi atrics (AAP), many new moms opted out during COVID. According to research presented during the 2022 AAP National Conference & Exhibition in October, 2022, researchers found an 11 percent decrease in the rate of exclusive breastfeeding and a four percent decrease in any breastfeeding at all during the COVID pandemic in comparison to before.

"There is a false belief that breastfeeding is a natural instinct that's supposed to happen out of thin air," says Amy Yeh, M.D., one of the study's authors. "Every mother, baby and dad is unique; it is picking up on the cues of the baby and figuring out what works for both mother and Baby. It becomes easier with time; remember: Mother's milk is gold," she says.

The study also detected decreases in breastfeeding across all demographic groups studied. A couple of the reasons cited for the lower rate was a decrease in hospital staffing during COVID and access to breastfeeding training. But remember, breastfeeding remains best for Baby.

BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING

To get the breastfeeding rate back to "normal," a knowledge of breastfeeding's benefits are important:

• Your breast milk's antibodies help protect your baby from colds, the flu and yield a decrease risk of ear infections, asthma, diabetes and several other health and neruodevelopmental outcomes.

• It creates an enormous bond between mother and infant.

• It protects mothers as well: according to the National Cancer Institute, breastfeeding is associated with a decreased risk of breast and ovarian cancers.

• It lowers the risk of SIDS.

• It helps moms get back into pre-baby shape.

New Books for New Parents Focus on Finding Your OWN Way

Starting the parenting journey brings many mixed ideas about what it means to be a mom or dad. Many young parents want to do things differently than their parents did — it's a different generation, afterall.

In GOOD INSIDE: A GUIDE TO BECOMING THE PARENT YOU WANT TO BE, (Harper Wave; $28.99), by psychologist and mother-of-three Becky Kennedy, the author aims to change the way we think about raising kids. Kennedy's take is about self-development over child development. Readers are implored to connect with their children at all costs — even in the worst of moments — and to allow connection to get you through. For older parents, this may all be a bit touchy feely (who has all of this time for talking through everything) but for millenials, taking extra time is a lot more than their busy parents did.

RAISING ADVENTUROUS EATERS (New Harbinger; $18.95) by Lara Dato, a pediatric occupational therapist, is subtitled, "Practical Ways to Overcome Picky Eating & Food Sensory Sensitivities." And for good reason: A vast array of keen information is provided for parents related to textures and swallowing plus strategies that can often elude parents in the clutch at dinnertime. In a time when picky eating is found in so many households, it's great to discover smart help.

Laurena Charley, M.D. says positive parenting is the answer. Her book, THE UNCONDITIONAL RESPECT AND LOVE (JW Choices; $14.99), provides important insights into how affirming and validating your child is everything to his well being and yours.

It doesn't come out until February, but with advanced peek-a-boo, we can't wait for you to take in RAISING BABY BY THE STARS (Artisan; $20) by Maressa Brown. Explore your child's birth chart and astrology to decode his personality and how to reach him where he is plus a whole lot more.

What You Must Know About RSV Respiratory Syncytial Virus Came Early This Year

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) came on strong this year — earlier than usual. The virus, known for its cold-like symptoms comes around each winter but this year, it arrived in October, 2022.

" We're in uncharted territory with RSV this year and it's just an atypical early season for us and we don't know if that's going to be sustained or if it's going to peak and drop," says James Antoon, M.D., with Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

If you're a new parent, know how to keep your infant safe. Symptoms of RSV (including a runny nose, coughing, sneezing and fever) show up about four-to-six days after getting infected and – for many kids ages 3 and older – typically go away within a week or two. However, RSV can be very dangerous for infants and babies. In serious RSV cases, the virus can cause rapid and shallow breathing (called “belly breathing” because the stomach pulls in dramatically as the body works hard to get more air) and can progress to bronchiolitis or pneumonia, conditions which may require hospitalization.

How to Protect Baby from RSV

RSV is spread when someone who has an RSV infection has close contact with another person through talking, coughing, sneezing, hugging or kissing. It can also be spread when a person sick with RSV touches or uses a shared surface (like door knobs, drinking glasses, etc.). There are important steps you can take to prevent an RSV infection in your baby:

• Insist that anyone who interacts with your baby is not sick.

• Insist that anyone who touches your baby has clean hands.

• Keep Baby in a smoke-free environment.

• Breastmilk can help reduce the risk for serious complications from RSV; breastfeed Baby if possible.

• Avoid taking Baby into a crowded environment.

• Wash your hands often throughout the day

• Disinfect communal surfaces like doorknobs, refrigerator doors, light switches, etc.

• Don't hesitate to call your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby's symptoms.

CONCEPTION: Questions to Ask Your Doctor

Often, after years of painstaking birth control, it can be a tough realization that getting pregnant when you finally want to isn’t as easy as you thought it would be. Here are a few questions to ask your doctor when you are ready to conceive:

How long should it take for me to get pregnant?

This depends on a great number of factors. But realize that making a baby takes time, often up to 12 months. If you’ve been trying for longer than a year, see your doctor to begin an infertility evaluation. If you’re older than 35, it can take longer because of aging impact on your eggs, so start your evaluation after six months if you have not

conceived . Don’t panic, try to be patient and have fun in the process. After all, stress will only exacerbate the challenge.

How much will my age really affect my chances?

The chances of a woman naturally having a baby after age 35 decline by about 50 percent, and they decline by about 90 percent after age 40. So, if having a baby

is in your future plans, get started sooner rather than later. If you’re under 35, see an infertility expert after one year of trying without success. If you're 35 or more, see an infertility expert if you don't conceive naturally within six months. If you're over 38, be seen after three months of unsuccessful trying. Though conceiving after 40 may be difficult, it’s not impossible, so ask your doctor what else you can do.

WINTER 2022 - 23 22 13 nashvilleparent.com FEATURE

Should I take prenatal vitamins?

What kind? I hear some can really make you nauseated.

Yes. Eating healthy will raise your chances of conceiving and having a healthy pregnancy (that means cutting out the junk food and loading up on greens). Prenatal vitamins help fill in any holes in your diet. Ask your doctor to recommend a good prenatal vitamin with calcium and lots of B6 when you first start thinking about having a baby. Rainbow Light Complete Prenatal System is one of the few prenatals that has enough vitamin B6, which has been shown to increase fertility. Also, take an Omega-3 fish oil. Look for those with a higher mg of DHA and EPA. Take the prenatal when you are feeling well, and eat something when you take it.

Does timing matter when it comes to conception?

Your best bet is try to conceive just before and during ovulation, which happens anywhere from 13 to 20 days before your period. I recommend using an ovulation predictor kit to time intercourse. Then, have sex a few days leading up to and on the day of ovulation. Remember that sperm can live up to six days in your body, but your egg can only survive 12 to 24 hours. This timing gives you the best odds of the sperm and egg meeting. To be sure you’re getting the timing right, pick up a ClearBlue fertility monitor to help you map your fertility calendar. Use a digital thermometer for basal temperature measurements. And to keep you on track, use a journal as a personal conception and pregnancy organizer.

Can I use a lubricant?

If having timed relations is affecting your ability to be intimate, a lubricant is a great option. But many lubricants may actually negatively affect sperm motility. Try Pre-Seed. It’s the only FDA-cleared, clinically shown ‘Fertility-Friendly’ lubricant developed by doctors and used by fertility clinics. Use the applicator to apply it near the cervix. It's pH balanced to match fertile cervical mucus as well as the pH of sperm, so it won’t harm your chances of conceiving.

When should I take a pregnancy test? And which one

should I use?

Home pregnancy tests work by detecting levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) that is produced during pregnancy. These tests can only detect hCG after implantation occurs, which is generally 10 days post-ovulation (dpo). But don’t freak out if a test comes up negative at 10 dpo, since it’s not an exact science and you may still get pregnant up to 15 dpo. Fifteen dpo is when a woman who is not pregnant will typically get her period, so it’s the ‘first day of a missed period.’ First Response Early Result is the only pregnancy test that can detect pregnancy up to six days before your missed period (nine dpo). That’s one day sooner than any other home pregnancy test in the market.

Be Well Postpartum: 7 Tips for a Healthy Recovery

In the haze of new motherhood, moms often put their own health and well-being at the bottom of the list. But a healthy recovery after the birth of your baby is vital to your well-being.

Throughout your pregnancy, you work to eat the right foods, drink plenty of fluids, rest and try to keep stress to a minimum. You might think once your baby arrives that you can relax on this strict self-care regimen, but caring for yourself needs to remain a top priority to ensure good, ongoing health for Baby and you. One of the most surprising tips for your wellness is practically free: water.

1. Drink plenty of water.

"The key to optimal recovery after delivery is fluid hydration with water," says Dr. Gina Petelin, an ob/ gyn. "This is important for replenishing your body after significant fluid losses." Drink up, Mama.

2. Nourish yourself.

Before the baby arrives, assemble healthy meals ahead of time to st ash in your freezer. In the midst of caring for a newborn, you'll be less likely to eat poorly when you can quickly pop a nutritious, ready-made meal into the oven or crockpot.

Also, stock up on protein-packed snacks to keep your energy up especially if you plan to breastfeed. Choose simple, healthy snacks like cheese sticks, almonds, rotisserie chicken, yogurt and energy bars.

Consult with your doctor to determine how many extra calories you should be consuming each day according to your activity level, weight and if you choose to nurse.

3. Sleep when the baby sleeps.

Those first days home from the hospital — rest, rest, rest and spend as much time skin-to-skin with your baby as you can," says Teresa Marshall, a birth and postpartum doula. "This will truly make for a smoother transition for Baby from womb to room and for Mama, as well."

16 WINTER 2022 - 23 nashvilleparent.com
by Christa Melnyk Hines
feature

Tricia Walania, a postpartum emotional support program coordinator, says that rest is one of the best ways you can care for yourself.

"Being rested helps you cope more effectively with both physical and emotional changes," she says.

Unable to catnap? Relax with your eyes closed.

4.

Integrate gentle exercise.

Many moms are surprised that they still look pregnant after delivery. Don't panic, that's normal, Petelin says. Although the uterus decreases in size right away, you will still appear to be about five months pregnant when leaving the hospit al. By following a healthy diet and exercising according to your doctor's instructions, you'll get back to your pre-pregnancy body.

Many moms enjoy group exercise activities like "mommy and me" yoga and Fit4Mom programs where you'll also experience companionship with other moms. Walking is also beneficial. Not only will you get exercise, a stroll around the block on a sunny day will do wonders for your emotional well-being and give you a boost of vitamin D.

Take extra care if you've had a cesarean delivery and only gradually increase your activit y level according to your doctor's instructions. Current recommendations include no driving the first two weeks postpartum and no heavy lifting (anything over 15 pounds) for the first six weeks.

5. Expect hormonal changes.

Many new moms feel overwhelmed, tired, anxious, tearful or mildly depressed. "Exhaustion, hormonal changes and isolation after the birth of a baby may lead to what is referred to as 'baby blues,'" Wala nia says. "To some degree this happens to everyone; it's natural and not permanent," she adds.

Talk to your doctor if symptoms persist for more than two weeks. Anxiet y and depression can also be linked to thyroid issues, low levels of iron and vitamin D.

6. Connect with your friends.

"I would recommend reaching out. Don't be afraid to ask for help or just a visit," Marshall says.

Often, friends and family members are eager to assist by holding the baby or watching siblings to give you a chance to nap, shower, go for a walk or run an errand.

"You have to take care of yourself in order to be able to t ake care of your baby," Walania says.

While social media can help you feel connected to the outside world, nothing can quite replace a deeply satisfying conversation with a friend or a warm hug. Get together for coffee, lunch or a walk. If your network feels inadequate, join a mothers' group or look for parent-child gatherings in your neighborhood through Meetup.com.

Isolation can aggravate symptoms of postpartum mood disorders, which affect nearly a quarter of new moms. Check with your doctor to find out if your hospital offers a postpartum emotional support group. These groups typically provide moms with information, resources and compassionate support from other moms who are experiencing similar feel ings. The sooner you seek support, the faster you can st art feeling like yourself again.

"We don't want anyone to miss out on the first months of their baby's life because they don't feel like themselves and aren't able to enjoy it like they had hoped," Walania says.

7. Nurture your spirit.

You may be a mom now, but you aren't only a mom. Take time to do the things that have always brought you personal fulfillment and joy, whether that's craft ing, relaxing in a warm bath, browsing at a boutique or lunching with a friend. When you are happier and healthier, your baby will be, too.

10 Money-Saving Tips For Baby’s First Year

When you're sprouting a bump, being more budget-conscious suddenly becomes one of your top priorities. Try these money-saving tips to stay on budget during that first (expensive!) year:

1. Join Local Buy/Sell/Trade Groups: Join a Facebook Buy/Sell/Trade group or a Buy Nothing group in your area to look for big-ticket items like cribs. These are also good spots to sell items your child has outgrown or doesn’t use.

2. Choose Baby Gear That Grows with Your Child: Some high chairs convert into seats for toddlers and older kids. Some cribs can be turned into toddler beds.

3. Borrow, Don’t Buy: Ask friends with older kids if they have items you can borrow before you buy something for yourself.

4. Ask Parents What You Really Need: Buy the must-haves and skip the nice-to-haves until you figure out whether your child would actually benefit from them.

5. Buy Necessities in Bulk: Once you’ve determined your favorite brands, buy nec-

essities like diapers, wipes and formula in bulk and sign up for automatic deliveries to save in the long run.

6. Get Secondhand Special-Occasion Outfits: Hit up Poshmark, consignment shops or yard sales for special-occasion outfits.

7. Find Free Local Fun: Explore your area for free spots, from parks and walking trails to your local library.

8. Go Minimalist with Baby Toys: Aside from a comforting lovie, sensory ball, mobile and stuffed animal, babies don’t need lots of store-bought toys. Instead, give them a wooden spoon or plastic measuring cups and watch them have a ball.

9. Don’t Fall for Baby Marketing: Switch to a fragrance-free gentle detergent and you can wash the whole family’s clothes at the same time. The same goes for soap and body lotion.

10. Call Your Pediatrician Before Scheduling a Visit: Ever y baby concern may not require a doctor’s appointment and the co-pay that goes along with it.
