Cundall is to be commended for taking a real leadership position on the sustainability agenda, continuing to place One Planet Living at the heart of its approach. By addressing four cornerstones of impact: Industry Leadership, Projects, Workplaces and Homes and Communities, Cundall is set to make great progress in embedding sustainability into its business purpose.

Carbon emissions, energy and building performance stood out as the most important environmental issues, whilst volunteering and upskilling staff are the most important socially. This report shows good progress in these important areas. With strong leadership from Global Head of Sustainability Amie Shuttleworth, reporting and monitoring have continued to improve.

In 2016, we supported Cundall with its materiality assessment, which highlighted priority issues and gaps in reporting and monitoring. Issues considered highest priority for Cundall were a mix of environmental, social and financial.

We look forward to seeing the progress of Cundall’s sustainability strategy.

Foreword We are very excited about the progress we have made over the past year, as we have been working hard to embed sustainability into everything we do.

We have been through a process to update our mission, vision and values as we have grown substantially as a business in recent years and wanted our people to be the authors of our current and future strategy. This was a fantastic process to go through, with all staff in all offices globally given the chance to take part in workshops, discussing who we want to be and what impact we want to have.

Our mission as a business is to :

This helps to continue to shape the culture of our business and is the platform for which new initiatives, innovation and collaboration is founded upon.

This year, we have instigated a number of workstreams to ensure that sustainability is embedded into everything we do, as well as commenced regular reporting against our KPIs. This is now starting to bear fruit, as we can track our success and see where we need to improve quickly and easily. We know we still have several areas where we can do better, and we hope our refreshed approach will allow for swift action to be taken. In addition, we conducted a materiality review in order to update our sustainability strategy, this was a good time to do it as it was five years since the first strategy was released, and our business has expanded both in numbers of employees but also in nature and geographical location.

This process has allowed us to identify six key impact areas which we will focus on in the coming years – particularly through the lens of the projects we deliver for clients and industry innovation and collaboration as these are where we can have maximum positive impact. We will continue to ensure we practice what we preach and use our offices as living labs, meaning we have engineers that can give practical, tried and tested advice to our clients, as well as contributing positively to our communities through pro-bono work and helping to inspire the next generation of professionals into our industry. Industry Leadership We believe in sharing knowledge and being agents of change, we operate in an industry that openly acknowledges that it needs to be less disjointed, it is a core part of our business strategy to help our industry innovate collaboratively. Tomás Neeson, Ecobuild, March 2017

Cundall has continued to share its knowledge both at its own events as well as industry conferences; our wide spectrum of industry knowledge has seen us present at over 100 events in 24 different global locations this year. Our presence at Ecobuild in the UK saw Managing Partner, Tomás Neeson, share our journey in creating a net positive business, whilst on the other side of the world, Cundall spoke at all four of the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Building days. Cundall also hosted a number of its own knowledge sharing events, a highlight being regular tours of our London Office. As the first in Europe to achieve a WELL standard, people from across the industry have visited to see how design can influence the health and wellbeing of their occupants. Organisations such as British Council of Office (BCO), RIBA, Sustainability Report 2016-17 Cundall

RICS, CIBSE and New London Architecture, have all organised tours for their members learning the value of designing for health and wellbeing. World Green Building Week also continues to be a key event in Cundall’s diary, each year more of our Cundall offices welcome the industry to share their knowledge. This year with 17 offices hosting events, we attracted over 500 attendees. Our teams work hard on these and all of our events not only share knowledge but practice what we preach, sourcing local caterers, often social enterprises and keeping to our target of at least 50% vegetarian food. In fact, our Hong Kong and Australian offices have implemented 100% vegetarian for all their events following excellent feedback from attendees.

We also regularly contribute to technical papers, for example Alan Fogarty, our London Sustainability Partner, contributed to the Health and Wellbeing in Homes report produced by the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC). Simon Wyatt, co-authored a Briefing Note by British Council for Offices on the WELL Building Standard®. In addition “A healthy light style – the biological impact of light” by Andrew Bissell, Lighting Director was also published in the CIBSE Journal.

Cundall acknowledges that to go far we must share and collaborate with the industry, we have done this by not only sharing our knowledge with peers but working with industry bodies to influence changes in legislation, design guideline and rating tools. Throughout our business, from graduate to partner level, Cundall employees sit on committees and boards for various industry organisations. For example, Mechanical Engineer, Gemma Stronach, was the Vice Chair of the CIBSE YEN North East where she not only helped shape various initiatives for young engineers that improves their skills, she also gained valuable experience herself contributing to a committee.


Industry Leadership IEQube Cundall has developed a low-cost, low-energy, multi-sensor (lux, temperature, humidity, VOCs, CO2, PM10) monitoring network, using cheap, commonly available electronic components; well-supported ‘cloud’ database; and real-time dashboard display. This is part of our ongoing Research and Technical Development programme, where health and wellbeing is one of our key focus areas. Cundall IEQube

Meanwhile, David Clark, Sydney Sustainability Partner, has sat on the Green Building Council’s Green Star steering committee, where he has collaborated with others in the industry to create the next version of Green Star which will again push the Australian construction industry to be leaders in Sustainability. Lee LestonJones, Manchester Structural Partner, was appointed as a member of the Structural Futures Committee (SFC) for the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). Amie Shuttleworth, Sustainability Director, spoke at the IStructE annual Sustainability Conference in London on the topic of the circular economy and embodied impacts– as embedding sustainability into structural engineering is an acknowledged area for improvement within the industry.

We also expanded our involvement with Green Building Councils’ across the world, becoming a member of the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC) and upgrading our UK GBC membership to Gold, with Simon Wyatt, Partner, now sitting on their membership committee.

The IEQube is one of the great successes from this programme, it was a research and development project that has been used to further Cundall’s understanding of health and wellbeing in buildings, and we showcased it in action at the World Sustainable Built Environment Conference in Hong Kong this year.

Our Research and Technical Development strategy has seen an increase in staff applying for funding and resources, with a number of new projects commencing. This strategy allows our staff to spend time away from fee earning projects to develop their ideas in line with our Sustainability and Business priorities.

Looking forward, Cundall is focussing its Research & Development and Partnerships on our six key areas of impact: Zero Carbon Energy, Climate Adaptation, Resource Efficiency, Equity and Ethics, Health and Wellbeing and Materials and Supply Chain. With some already very exciting research being commissioned into climate adaptation and the impact of different climate change scenarios on both the built environment, but also on the fundamentals of design codes. We will be sharing all of our knowledge with the industry through both briefing sessions and technical papers. This year we are additionally focussing on our strategic partnerships – enabling us to work collaboratively with others in order to continuously push the industry and ourselves forward towards more sustainable solutions.

World Green Building Week, Global For the fifth year running, Cundall took part in World Green Building Week (WGBW) across our office network. The subject was Healthy Buildings in Healthy Cities where the speakers discussed how health and wellbeing and environmental engineering go hand in hand to create sustainable buildings. Events were held in 13 different cities where 500 people attended.

One Carter Lane, London, UK Our own London office was the first project in the UK and Europe to achieve WELL Certification through the WELL Building Standard™ (WELL) and only the seventh to have been through the process in the World. Cundall now uses this as a live case study, welcoming numerous industry tours and using it as a R&D Laboratory.

Designing Tomorrow’s Buildings Today, Hong Kong Amie Shuttleworth, Cundall’s Director of Sustainability and guest speaker Ken Shuttleworth, Founding Director of Make Architects, shared their views on designing buildings that are appropriate for now as well as for the long term, a balance which has been historically difficult to achieve. Amie argued that costing externalities trough natural capital accounting was vital to this process.

Supply Chain Sustainability School, Australia Cundall signed up as Australia’s first Technical Partner. This collaboration sees Cundall upskill contractors in understanding the environmental, economic and social impacts of their supply chains, helping them make informed decisions to reduce these impacts.

Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, first hospital to achieve BEAM Plus Platinum rating in Hong Kong

Cundall has invested in our engineers by providing training on all aspects of sustainable design, meaning we can add value to every project no matter what discipline we are appointed.

We also celebrated a number of our projects achieving industry firsts, where a project has pushed the boundaries to achieve beyond the current legislation. Our own London office is included in this list, as the first WELL Standard project in Europe. Shout Ridge, a residential development in Sydney which was the first residential project to receive a 6 Star Green Star - Multi Unit Residential Design v1 Certified Rating. Hong Kong Children’s Hospital is the first Hospital in Hong Kong to achieve BEAM Platinum rating.

Our Cundall Diploma has been the key to this strategy. What we believe is an industry first, Cundall launched a unique in-house sustainable design training programme, which is open to all staff regardless of discipline or level. It is intended to upskill and empower our people in sustainable design, giving participants the technical knowledge and the confidence to challenge conventional thinking and to continue to drive Cundall’s success in improving the built environment. Our Projects Cundall’s experienced and committed team are known throughout the industry for pushing the sustainable building envelope, and deserve applause for reaching this momentous milestone. UKGBC Head Office, UK Š Barr Gazetas

UK Green Building Council Existing systems were reused and enhanced, conserving the embodied energy, whilst improving the environmental and energy performance. The project achieved the lowest measured fit-out carbon footprint in UK and will reduce energy used per employee for lighting and small power by 40% by 2020 compared to a 2013 baseline. Hong Kong Science Park, Phase Three has continued to be recognised for its sustainable design, winning the Grand Award in Hong Kong Non-Residential (New Building) category at the Quality Building Awards 2016, this win took the number of award wins to double figures. Meanwhile, The Malings, in Newcastle, UK was named Supreme Winner at the Housing Design Awards and Telehouse Sustainability Report 2016-17 Cundall

North Two has won the Data Centre Solutions (DCS) Award 2017 for Data Centre Energy Efficiency Project of the Year. Our Australian business celebrated being the first consultancy to have 100 of their projects Green Star Certified. Romiley Madew DHCEO Green Building Council of Australia presented Cundall with a certificate to mark the occasion. The impact we can have on our projects will continue to be our priority, looking forward to our next financial year, Cundall is developing a tool where we will provide ideas on how a project can be more sustainable using the ten One Planet principles. This is something that will be offered on all projects no matter what engineering discipline Cundall has been appointed to do.

In the coming years we are going to create a work stream looking at aid funded projects, so we can use our skills to deliver projects that globally have a positive impact, as well as developing an ethical bid / no bid process which will ensure that as we grow as a business we continue to only work on projects which are in line with our business mission, vision and values. Cundall is also looking to expand its ISO14001 certification beyond its UK offices. We currently have global operational procedures which adhere to the ISO14001 standard and plan for 95% of our offices to be certified by 2025.

Hong Kong Children’s Hospital

Manchester, UK

Maggie’s Centre provides help to anyone who has been affected by cancer. Cundall’s lighting designers supported the home from home design, delivering a low level of warm comfortable light utilising furniture integrated lighting elements and minimal styling. The controls are simple with just ‘overcast’, ‘sunny’ and ‘off’ push button options.

The first Hospital in Hong Kong to achieve BEAM Plus rating. Cundall played a significant role in the design stage by introducing many cutting edge technologies as well as passive design solutions, that will not only maximise environmental performance but also improve the patient’s experience and hopeful aid recovery periods.

Wollongong Central NSW, Australia

Awarded 5 Star Green Star – Retail Centre v1 As-Built certified rating, which is the first and highest As-Built rating for a retail centre in Australia. The mall space utilises a passive mode of conditioning where spill air from the stores are the only source of cooling, enabling the mall to be opened when ambient conditions suit, providing an open flow to the retail environment. This solution was only realised following considerable comfort modelling by Cundall including CFD to ensure sufficient comfort and operability could be achieved. © Richard Glover

Ulster Hospital, Northern Ireland

The BREEAM assessment for the project, target rating is “Excellent”. A servicing strategy combining a high performance sealed envelope utilising chilled beams has been adopted throughout patient areas, allowing for good year round internal conditions and control, addressing concerns of infection control and also minimising pollution risk during the phased construction / demolition of the site. © Donal McCann

Our Projects: Highlights Peel Park Quarter Manchester, UK

A key challenge was to protect the end-users from asbestos impacted soil. Cundall’s untraditional approach significantly reduced the need to expose and remove the contaminated soil and saved some 5000m3 of earthworks in the process. Material, health and cost savings shared by all involved.

Rainton Bridge Car Park Durham, UK

A non-traditional surface drainage system was designed (for over 1 ha) that is entirely permeable with any offsite flows matching the natural flow rate of the terrain. All excavation was used in-situ saving time, money and embodied carbon associated with material consumption. Using a completely Sustainable Drainage and Earthwork System saved more than 10% of the total construction value over using traditional methods.

Starting from Passivhaus design principles, the building has optimised glazing orientation and sizes to take advantage of beneficial solar gain in winter while using solar shading devices to limit gain in summer. The majority of the spaces are naturally ventilated utilising the excellent local air quality. The only mechanically ventilated spaces are the changing areas, toilets, kitchen and museum areas where the heat from the exhaust air will be recovered.

Google utilised their own healthy materials tools to vet and approve general finishes and materials used within the building. In order to ensure all components of the product do not contain harmful toxins of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), we undertook a number of MEP materials and products throughout the assessment process.

Our Workplace To practice what we preach and to be a net positive business, we engage and enthuse our staff about environmental and social sustainability and report transparently on our performance.

With the appointment of our Director of Sustainability, Amie Shuttleworth, bringing a new focus upon our sustainability strategy, a major piece of work for her was to gain feedback from staff around the world on how as a business we can improve our performance. Following workshops with our 21 offices, it was clear that staff were keen to contribute to the strategy, however were not sure how their offices were performing and what they could do to improve this. Working alongside the UK Green Building Council, Cundall developed an interactive induction, that explained why sustainability is important to Cundall and how everyone can contribute. It includes case studies from around the world to inspire and explain the various targets we as a business have set. This was shown to all staff within the business and is now integrated with all new staff inductions. Sustainability Report 2016-17 Cundall

A monthly dashboard was created which is displayed in every office as well as available online to all staff. This was designed to educate, benchmark and inspire. Each month a One Planet Principle was chosen and defined to readers. Statistics are shown for each office to see how they are performing against others around the business. This is followed with case studies of how initiatives have improved performance.

Cundall has reformed SusTeams in all of its offices, with regular meetings to discuss how the office can improve their efficiencies, engage staff and review the data collated to identify areas of improvement. Initiatives include our Manchester office becoming a member of the Mobike bike sharing scheme, with helmets provided to staff. This has encouraged staff to cycle to meetings that are near the office reducing the use of taxis.

Elsewhere, our Birmingham team volunteered at nearby Kingsbury Water country park to create a new meadow and wildlife area and our Doha team donated 10 big “Christmas Boxes for Migrant Workers,� which were prepared with 24 daily use items and handed over to a camp with workers from Nepal, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Collating data across 21 offices has been a challenge in the past. With our targets set, we collate in excess of 30 indicators from every office, which previously was done on an annual basis. We therefore developed a monthly data collection spreadsheet which each office completes to capture the data on a regular basis. This ensures that the data is being collated in a timely manner, anomalies are identified through the process which are rectified through training of the collator or adjusting the measurement unit to match other offices. The monthly dashboards are also used as a motivational tool for the collators to see how their work is being used to make changes in the business.

The Manchester office is encouraging its staff to keep fit and reduce inner-city congestion by covering the hire cost of all work-related cycle journeys using the newly launched Mobike bicycle share platform.

Cundall’s Transportation team are specialists in travel behaviour, especially in the use and promotion of sustainable modes of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport. In particular their work focuses on encouraging people to walk and cycle instead of driving through the provision of infrastructure and other hearts and minds measures.

With employees working on various projects throughout the city, Manchester has asked staff to consider using the Mobike scheme for short-distance business travel and will not only cover journey cost but also supply cycle helmets freely available in the office reception. Our involvement is not only helping us achieve our One Planet Commitments it has also helped raise Cundall’s profile with a story in the Manchester Evening News. These bike sharing initiatives are offered in a number of cities, speak to your local One Planet Committee to find out if you can do the same.

Neil McAlpine has lectured in academic institutions throughout the UK and globally on the topic of sustainable transport design to professionals starting out their career through PTRC and to his peer groups. Neil has focussed on the future transport network and how professionals can shape the accessibility of the city and the way people chose to move within this space. LUSAIL LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT, QATAR

The Lusail Light Rail Transit (LRT) system will provide a sustainable, state-of-the-art transportation network, serving the nineteen districts of the new city of Lusail. Cundall is responsible for the design development for ten underground stations, two open cut stations with one at grade station. Stations include associated pumping stations, ventilations shafts and tunnels. Total station area is approx. 200,000 m2.

As part of the Cundall Diploma, each office conducted a waste audit lasting one week. This identified waste streams and volumes, allowing each office to consider ways to reduce waste as well as how to increase recycling rates.

The Lusail Light Rail Transit (LRT) system will provide a sustainable, state-of-the-art transportation network, serving the nineteen districts of the new city of Lusail. Cundall is responsible for the design development for ten underground stations, two open cut stations with one at grade station. Stations include associated pumping stations, ventilations shafts and tunnels. Total station area is approx. 200,000 m2.

With employees working on various projects throughout the city, Manchester has asked staff to consider using the Mobike scheme for short-distance business travel and will not only cover journey cost but also supply cycle helmets freely available in the office reception.

Our Communities Making a difference outside of work, to actively contribute to local communities and help our staff (and their family and friends) lead more sustainable lives is an important part of our values as a business. Give and gain, Newcastle, UK

In 2016, Cundall celebrated its 40th anniversary. To mark this anniversary, we set our staff the challenge to donate 40,000 hours volunteering. This saw a wide spectrum of volunteering from our 21 locations. Offices clubbed together to volunteer, for example our Hong Kong office volunteered to become “Food Angels” and helped prepare rescued food in Food Angel’s central kitchen which was distributed to those in need. Individuals were seen contributing to their community with Structural Associate, Emma Kent leading her local scout group.

Engineers volunteered their knowledge and skills to make a difference to communities in need, for example Stephen Dixon, geotechnical engineer, travelled to Sierra Leone to help construct a new sanitation block. UNICEF states that in 2015, 2.3 billion people still lacked a basic sanitation service. Cundall’s Manchester office provided structural engineering and specialist lighting design on a charitable basis for the refurbishment of the hospital building, “The Lodge at Reuben’s”, a structure dating back to 1889 and formerly known as Woods Hospital. The retreat will give solace and support to families and their close friends who have suffered the bereavement of a child or have a child suffering from a life limiting or lifethreatening illness.

The scheme opened Cundall employee’s eyes to the various ways they can donate their time, skills and money to benefit those less fortunate. This initiative was very well supported across our global business with all offices taking part. Therefore, in the next financial year, Cundall will be rolling out the inspiring future generations scheme which will see staff from around the world volunteer to inspire the next generation.


Our Communities: 40,000 hours In 2016, Cundall celebrated its 40th Birthday and alongside the events and activities to celebrate this milestone. Cundall also wanted to ensure that we gave something back to the people, organisations and communities around us and pledged a total of 40,000 hours of volunteering to reflect our 40 years in business. Although we did not reach our 40,000 target, we did see a significant increase in volunteering activities for this year across the global business. In the 2016 calender year, Cundall employees donated 20,000 hours; an average of around 30 hours per member of staff.

Encouraging active, sociable, meaningful lives to promote good health and wellbeing.

The staff survey has shown a decrease in staff agreeing that Cundall is a great place to work by 23% from 2014/15 to 2016/17. This needs to improve to 80% to meet our 2025 target. The staff survey participation has decreased by 37% from 2014/15 to 2016/17. This needs to improve to 85% to meet the 2025 target. In order to address the decrease in staff participation in the survey, we have decided to introduce a flexible employee feedback platform - conducting regular shorter surveys - which also allow for confidential feedback to the HR team, as well as a peer to peer recognition feature encouraging co-workers to recognise each other for a job well done.

Creating safe, equitable places to live and work which support local prosperity and international fair trade. The percentage of floor area with natural ventilation and/or access to connectivity to the outdoor has decreased by 15% from 2015/16 to 2016/17. This will need to improve significantly to meet the 2025 targets, however this target needs to be reviewed as the offices expand and move to new corporate real-estate commercial buildings it will not be feasible to target.

The percentage of workstations within 7m of a window has decreased by 10% from 2015/16 to 2016/17, however still meets the 2025 target.

The percent of staff under the living wage has nearly halved in the last year to 2.5% of all staff in Cundall, including internships. Cundall is working hard towards our 2025 target of 0%.

Cundall conducted 47 sustainability seminars in 2016/17 an improvement of 74% from 2012/13, almost meeting our 50 seminars a year by 2025 which will inevitably happen as the business continues to grow.

Staff numbers with access to flexible working options and compliance with Ethical Business Practice as required by law has been implemented across the UK, meeting the 2025 target.


Nurturing local identity and heritage, empowering communities and promoting a culture of sustainable living. Cundall has exceeded the 2015 target for involvement in 15 community projects, as we have been involved in 20 projects in 2016/2017 reporting year. We did not meet our target of achieving 0.4% of our total turnover to be donated to charity, achieving 0.03%. This is because we have focused our time on probono activities, donating our time rather than money. This year, Cundall pledged 40,000 hours of volunteering to celebrate its 40th birthday and have achieved 20,000 hours.

Protecting and restoring land for the benefit of people and wildlife.

We have strengthened the culture of sustainability within our business through the development of the Beyond Report, a free set of recommendations based on the One Planet Principles designed to make the projects we are delivering more sustainable. We also developed and disseminated a sustainability induction video, where all staff made a sustainability pledge – and heard directly from our Managing Partner Tomås Neeson on what and why sustainability and One Planet Living are important to our business. We have supported culture by installing artwork by local artists in our offices, with 42% of our offices with such artworks. This exceeds our 2015 target of 25%.

Over the last twelve months the percentage of Cundall offices that provide habitats for birds and insects has dropped significantly to 11% from 50%. This is due to the addition of new offices and old offices moving to corporate real-estate commercial buildings. The number of staff participating in tree planting or other local wildlife conservation activities has also significantly dropped in 2016/17 to 4.3% from 33% in 2015/16, this is due to a rise in donating time to other charitable causes (not just those that contribute towards wildlife conservation).

The project incorporates renewable energy in the form of solar panels, utilises orientation, daylight and high level of insulation to minimise energy demands, 80% of the external wall of the building is finished in locally sourced materials and increases biodiversity within the vegetation biodiverse roof as well as providing habitats for bats and birds.

Using water efficiently, protecting local water resources and reducing flooding and drought.

Promoting sustainable humane farming and healthy diets high in local, seasonal organic food and vegetable protein.

The total consumption of water has increased as the business has expanded. In addition, the majority of new offices have additional water services such as showers and changing facilities and therefore the consumption has increased.

The type of tea, coffee and sugar used for staff and meetings has remained the same without any improvement to the percentage being organic and/or fair trade. This will need to be addressed to improve from the current 31% to 90% of food purchased for consumption in offices.

Capturing the water consumption has been a major challenge as the water supply is usually controlled by the landlord and not submetered for tenants. Hence, this consumption is very much an informed estimate of Cundall’s actual water usage.

The total emissions due to business travel has reduced even though the business has expanded. Cundall has already met and exceeded its 2025 target of 325 tCO2e . Business travel has been reduced with the introduction and ease of use of Skype, which has eliminated the need for a lot of travel. Our commuting emissions have increased by 42% from our baseline and exceed our 2015 target, in the same time that our business has seen an 88% growth in staff numbers.

Our recent travel survey revealed that some of our offices are better than others at utilising sustainable transport options. The location of our offices generally supports the use of public transport, with 70% of kilometers travelled via train, bus, bicycle, tram or walking. Staff commute has increased, reasons may be due to increase in the cost of living in major cities Cundall offices are in that people choose to live further away. The travel survey highlighted a lot of extremely long commute times. This should be addressed under a travel policy to allow people flexible working conditions to work remotely.

Using materials from sustainable sources and promoting products.

This year, our targeted efforts have resulted in us surpassing our 2025 targets by reaching an impressive reduction to 18kg of paper consumed per person. This is a 45.8% reduction on last year’s results. There was an increase in the proportion of FSC paper purchased from 17% in 2013 to 67% in 2017.

Cundall set a goal to reduce waste sent to landfill by setting a target of 98% waste recycled or reused. As of 2017, we have achieved 78% recycled or reused.

The decrease in paper consumption is due to less printing as more work is done digitally, discouraging unnecessary printing and the implementation of follow-me printing technology.

We acknowledge our target is for recycling, and we will endeavour in future years to gather data that is split into re-use, recycling and diversion from landfill to get more accurate statistics.

We have also increased the purchase of natural cleaning products in our offices, from 33% to 53% since 2013 and will further increase this through improving our procurement processes. Our new offices have also been designed more sustainably. We have target to achieve a rating of gold or equivalent for new fit-outs, but we have not met the target % in any year.

This has been primarily achieved with a change in waste management practice from our largest offices, London and Birmingham, who now employ a third party waste contractors to divert 100% of waste from landfill (all waste that is not recycled is sent to energy recovery plant).

Organic waste is a significant proportion of the waste produced in our offices, and whilst we have a worm farm in Sydney, ways to increase the diversion of this stream from landfill is one way we will look into increasing our total diversion rates, as well as better education and easier to understand recycling processes.

Since 2012, we have seen our carbon per person figure drop by 27.6%, and in the future, we will work towards decreasing this further by implementing energy saving initiatives in our offices.

Whilst this figure has increased to 6.8% from our baseline and exceeds our 2015 target, at the same time our business has seen an 88% growth in staff numbers. Accordingly, we have seen a decrease in our business energy use intensity of 39%, which indicates that our offices are using less energy on a meter square basis since 2012.

This may be attributed to increasing efficiency of our office design; the lighting power density of our newer offices is much less than our older offices and behavioural changes such as increased flexible working and minimising air conditioning usage.
