About Cundall

We are an international multi-disciplinary consultancy, operating from 21 locations across the globe. With sustainability at the heart of everything we do, our team of engineers delivers innovative, sustainable design solutions to address the project’s whole life cycle. We expect our engineers to consider the implications of their design for every project as a whole, as well as commenting on wider environmental issues across disciplines. We routinely design to LEED, BREEAM and Green Star standards, and our approach is always to look for those wider implications. This goes beyond simply meeting the requirements for benchmarking credits, while also acknowledging that these are important as a minimum requirement.

July 2020

We are also the world’s first consultancy to be formally endorsed as a One Planet Company by sustainability charity Bioregional. Every project is an opportunity to make a positive difference and challenge ourselves to develop solutions tailored to our clients’ requirements. We achieve this by listening, collaborating and using our local and global expertise. Whether we are focused on cost, programme or reduction in environmental impact, we look for options that will bring client benefit. We encourage innovation at every turn but understand this shouldn’t come at the expense of functionality.

Innovation isn’t about being different for the sake of it, but being different when the project requires it.

4 Capability Statement: Fire Engineering

Our mission is simple: • Provide great opportunities for our people • Create fantastic built environments • Positively impact our communities A priority of all our projects is building strong relationships with our client and design team, based on open communication and Partner involvement throughout. Because of this, over 70% of our work is repeat business. This produces better project outcomes, as everyone involved has a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities.

Aside from our high level of repeat business, our leadership skills are demonstrated by the awards we have won for our performance, including being named Building Performance Consultancy of the Year (1001000) and receiving the Learning and Development Initiative Award at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2019.

These close relationships foster easy communication and also bring ownership of the entire project, which helps forge a one-team culture to review pre-conceived ideas, share risk and overcome challenges. Crucially, it also makes projects more enjoyable for everyone working on them.

Other recent awards include Building of Year at the AJ100 Awards 2018; CIBSE Yorkshire Commercial and Industrial Project of the Year 2018; and Large Project Most Innovative Project at the Northern IStructE Awards 2018.

Fire Engineering Core Services

Strategy and Compliance

Computational Modelling

We offer an end-to-end service, extending from initial planning to construction fit-out.

We approach all our projects by first exploring their ultimate goals rather than simply accepting the details of the design brief.

The provision of an integrated fire engineering strategy will provide the most cost-effective design solution and, if completed at an early stage, can be agreed-in-principle with the relevant authorities, which will de-risk the design process and provide a degree of certainty on the costs involved. Our experience in fire research, testing and firefighting provides us with a solid background, which we can use to discuss and agree the fire engineering strategy with the authorities-havingjurisdiction

Identifying where alternative strategies and best practices to innovative solutions may be of benefit to projects. At a technical level, this can include the development of advanced computer models such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Non-linear Finite Element Analysis and people behaviour as well as integrated management solutions.

Structural Fire Engineering

Fire Systems

As part of our fire engineering services, we can also provide a structural fire engineering analysis of the key structural elements of the building.

Not all systems are equal; and what works in one building or situation, may not be appropriate in other applications.

The main purpose of such an analysis is to design a building structure with a suitable fire resistance in order to protect the means of escape for occupants and fire fighters. This can potentially result in substantial cost savings to the project whilst ensuring that life safety is not compromised.

Cundall’s fire engineers will ensure that only those systems that are appropriate for the particular fire risk are considered, which means that the budget is spent where it will have the most impact. To do this, we work with our experienced fire protection engineers, and other services engineers, to accurately identify the risks, and ensure that the system is engineered, designed, installed and commissioned effectively.

Methodology and Approach

Our Approach We approach all our projects by first exploring their ultimate goals rather than simply accepting the details of the design brief. From there we work collaboratively with the rest of the project team through all stages of the project, from concept design to post completion, to deliver projects that achieve agreed financial, social and environmental objectives, whilst achieving the necessary levels of fire safety and fire protection. We will undertake the statutory approvals negotiations on behalf of the client, and the experience and background of our fire engineers has enabled us to develop excellent working relationships with the approval’s bodies on many projects.

Our methodology is based on: •

• •

July 2020

Creating good communication and cooperation between all the key stakeholders (the client, the design team and the regulatory authorities). Use of workshops to challenge assumptions and preconceived ideas, to encourage lateral thinking, and to test proposed solutions and question norms. Developing an appropriate balance between international best practice and local codes and construction technologies. Integrating sustainable design processes and initiatives into the project within cost budgets, as part of an integrated fire engineering strategy. Value engineering to avoid overdesign of structural and services systems. Establishing and monitoring an agreed quality standard for the fire engineering design.

9 Capability Statement: Fire Engineering

Methodology and Approach

Sustainable Design Process Our design process considers the fundamental parameters: site, built form, envelope, services and building occupants. Sustainability is embedded into our methodology and approach, and we embrace environmentallyinformed design solutions into every fire engineering solution, where this is appropriate and where it will not prove detrimental to the overall process. In addition to considering the necessary fire safety and fire protection goals, we also consider what measures can be implemented to minimise the effect that a fire may have on the environment. This process not only considers the fire effluent, and its impact on the environment, but also takes account of the polluting effects of fire water run-off, and the embedded energy and carbon used in the manufacture and installation of preventive systems.

Strategy The provision of an integrated fire engineering strategy will provide the most cost-effective design solution and, if completed at an early stage, can be agreed-in-principle with the relevant authorities, which will de-risk the design process and provide a degree of certainty on the costs involved. Strict compliance with the relevant Codes, whilst meeting the minimum standards, may not provide the most appropriate solution. The rate of development of fire safety engineering systems means that many of the technical guidance documents written in support of the Codes may be out of date, and the application of fire engineering methodologies by a competent and

July 2020

experienced fire engineer can ensure that the available systems are used to their best effect. Not all systems are equal; and what works in one building or situation, may not be appropriate in other applications. Our experience in fire research, testing and firefighting provides us with a solid background, which we can use to discuss and agree the fire engineering strategy with the authorities-havingjurisdiction. We understand their concerns, and we make sure that the safety of firefighters is taken into account when developing the solution for any building. The outcomes from fire investigations and post-fire analysis are fed back into our processes to ensure that lessons are learnt, and lives and property are not put at risk.
