know Battery prototype turning waste heat into electricity

Producing electricity using nothing but the ambient heat around it? According to a recent publication in the National Academy of Science we are now a step closer. A team from MIT has created an electrochemical cell that uses different temperatures to convert heat to electricity. It is however reliant on the ‘Carnot limit’, which is the maximum absolute amount of heat energy for useful electricity. In its current stage, it achieves low conversion efficiencies generating watts rather than kilowatts, however demand of low power sources including electrical systems and industrial facilities utilising low power still remains strong. An exciting thought of what’s to come.

4-D printing is nearly reality Researchers at the University of Wollongong, Australia have created a 3D printercompatible hydrogel that is mechanically tough and able to repeatedly change shape in response to water temperature. The scientists have demonstrated the technology by 3D-printing an autonomous water valve, but the material could also be used to create soft robots, custom designed sensors and self-assembling macrostructures.

Australian car industry buzzing overseas As the Australian car industry winds down locally, it seems our designers and engineers are getting global recognition and praise overseas. Earlier in the year an Australian designer stole the limelight at the Detroit motor show, the biggest in the US. Chief Aussie designer Todd Willing presented Ford’s new GT supercar after spending 14 months working on the GT in a secret studio. Ford already employs more designers and engineers than factory workers with both Holden and Ford committing to maintain local design centres to work on global projects.

Graphene produces a working 3D holographic display Since Star Wars we have been dreaming of a full-3D holographic display. A new effort from Australian universities looks like it could be getting closer, by using materials from the versatile carbon-based graphene. Graphene oxide is treated with a process called photo-reduction, using a rapidly pulsed laser to heat it. This creates the pixel capable of bending the light to produce a holographic image. The team has created a display of up to 52 degrees. Sounds promising.

Want to regrow your hair? pluck out what’s left Losing your hair? Paradoxically, the answer to growing it back might be to pluck alot of it out. Baldness sets in when hair follicles stop generating new hairs. People have known for almost a century that plucking a hair can reawaken its follicle. A team led by Cheng-Ming Chuong of the University of Southern California (LA) has found that if you pluck out enough hairs in mice, it triggers widespread regrowth. The skin sees one plucked hair as a micro-injury and sends out a distress signal that triggers the follicle to regenerate. Although unlike humans, mice grow hair in waves. Will it work in humans? (doubt it).

The advantages of Plant-wide Historians vs. Relational Databases

I

ndustrial businesses have entered the age of “big data,” the volume, variety and complexity of data they manage is exploding at record rates. Clearly the volume of data from which to extract value is beyond the capability of a traditional data management system. The challenge of managing big data for industry goes beyond the sheer volume of information; there is the diversity and complexity of data, which comes in various formats and from disparate sources. There are typically “islands” of process information that must be aggregated, stored, and

06

“optimised data enables better and faster decision-making, increased productivity and reduced costs.” analysed to derive context and meaningful value. To leverage big data, industrial businesses need the ability to support different types of information, the infrastructure to store massive data sets, and the flexibility to

leverage the information once it is collected and stored—enabling historical analysis of critical trends to enable real-time predictive analysis. As businesses increasingly realise that much more of their value proposition is information-based, technologies that can address big data are quickly gaining traction.

CLN | ISSUE 02 | JUN-SEP ‘15

| FEATURE

The industrial data challenge In an increasingly competitive environment, companies need to gain a sustainable advantage by achieving operational excellence, a journey that begins with data for process visibility. The vast amount of information continually increases, and it’s imperative for companies to truly understand and control their manufacturing operations by efficiently collecting critical data and maximizing its value. Optimised data enables better and faster decision-making, increased productivity and reduced costs. For example, a manufacturing manager may want to understand the significance of temperature variation on quality as the rate of flow of materials varies through a production line; or a power plant supervisor may want to analyse five years of past data to examine anomalies and variations to understand whether they were followed by subsequent outages to enable predictive analysis. This level of operational insight requires the ability

u

to quickly run a query against large data sets for specific time periods—a unique and powerful capability that calls for an industrial data solution. Advanced historians vs relational databases While historian software may not yet be top of mind when it comes to industrial big data solutions, what many companies may not realise is that these advanced, out-of-thebox solutions are specifically designed to efficiently collect, store and manage large volumes of time-series process data, which is precisely the industrial big data challenge. As data sets grow larger and more complex, advanced historians offer an effective, simple, and easy way for companies to efficiently leverage vast amounts of real-time and historical process data, a critical need for optimised decision support. Relational databases (RDBs) have helped many manufacturers gain more information about their operations by supporting simple operator queries, answering questions such as “What customer ordered the largest shipment?” They are built to manage

08

relationships and are ideal for storing contextual or genealogical information about manufacturing processes, but are rarely the best approach for vast amounts of process data collection and optimisation. On the other hand, plant-wide historians are designed for manufacturing and process data acquisition and presentation. They maximise the power of time series data and excel at answering questions that manufacturing typically needs to address

production for operational excellence. Data collection RDBs do not offer built-in data collection capabilities; therefore, custom code has to be written to insert and update records. This is sub-optimal because with a custom system, development costs and continual enhancements can be very expensive and time consuming.

“a plant-wide historian provides a much faster read/write performance over a relational database...” real-time decisions in production such as “What was today’s hourly unit production average compared to where it was a year ago or two years ago?” There are critical capabilities that manufacturers need to consider that position plant-wide historians as a better option for leveraging raw data from sensors and other real-time systems to improve

However, plant-wide historians include built-in data collection capabilities and can capture data from multiple sensors and systems. For example, GE’s Proficy Historian can collect large volumes of realtime plant floor information from various plant-floor devices at incredibly high speeds. Instead of having to build custom software for every type of data source as you would

CLN | ISSUE 02 | JUN-SEP ‘15

Speed RDBs can require significant custom engineering for each defined access and have comparatively slow performance when the queries cover large data sets or associated periods of time. In contrast, a plant-wide historian provides a much faster read/write performance over a relational database and “down to the millisecond” resolution for true real-time data. Data compression

for an RDB, Proficy Historian does not need to know any of the details regarding the propriety data sources. It can instantly connect to any OPC-enabled solution to collect data, providing flexibility, time savings and reduced costs.

manage archives and disk space due to the lack of compression; performance can be severely undermined, even with proprietary, pre-compressed data work arounds. However, the powerful compression algorithms of plant-wide historians enable you to store years of data easily and securely online, which enhances performance, reduces maintenance and lowers costs.

| FEATURE

Leveraging the value of plant-wide Historians and RDBs Plant-wide historians offer a clear value proposition for logging, storing, and retrieving high volumes of process time series data. However, RDBs place in industrial applications are valuable for drawing relationships between contextualised data collected to drive continuous improvement and promote a safe supply chain. Plant-wide historians are like “black box recorders” for your plant, capturing all of your raw data and providing the first level of context “time” to it. This can be leveraged by additional operations management applications.

With an RDB, the maintenance alone can be a full-time job because you have to continually

The future

B

usiness and IT leaders need to ask themselves whether their industrial enterprise is maximising the full potential value of their process data and using that insight to drive real-time improvements. As data volumes continue to expand, information-driven strategies will only become more pervasive as a source of competitiveness—making the use of big data in the industrial space ever more imperative.

A closer look at advanced historians demonstrates how such technologies can help enterprises leverage their time-series process data by providing the ability to efficiently run real-time analytics within massive sets of historical data. These solutions have the potential to revolutionise the way enterprises do business by providing critical insights for timelier operational decisions while also enabling continuous improvements across the enterprise.

Looking into the future, as information increasingly empowers enterprises to understand their businesses better and to foresee what is possible, those that capitalise on the value of big data will gain insights to improve performance beyond their competitors. They will be positioned to better innovate, compete, and drive value to significantly accelerate business growth and drive optimised performance for long term success.

ndustrial Ethernet has certainly come along over the years and so has our dependence on the IT hardware that is the conduit for system critical data. We are now going away from proprietary buses and relying on Ethernet as the answer to all communications for monitoring and automation controls because it’s simple to connect, easy to create reliable networks with redundancy and best of all it’s available! However this creates a problem for increased bandwidth to cater for devices connecting exponentially to the network, such as PLCs, VSDs, IP cameras, protocol converters and so on. It seems Red Lion have invested their resources and focus to develop the most reliable Gigabit Ethernet networks. The latest addition to the NT24K series industrial managed Gigabit Ethernet switches is a compact DIN-rail mountable version. The new series delivers full Gigabit wire-speed performance with the option of Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+), long life duration in harsh environments in a small durable enclosure for limited space footprints. To improve on past iterations, it has been developed from the ground up to properly maximise media options, network speed and switch management. Did it succeed? Read on.

A love for the outdoors, and all things automation, I chat briefly to Martin Daines, one of our Application Engineers in Sydney... Martin you’re a young guy, what got you first interested in this industry? Have you always had an interest? It wasn’t until I started working with Control Logic that I gained an appreciation for the industry, purely because of the large toys I was able to play with! There is seriously something appealing about turning raw material into a product and having to deal with the automation process inbetween. Are you finding a noticeable trend in the industry at the moment? The automation platforms are getting faster, smaller and easier to program, with price competitiveness leading the industry away from proprietary buses to Ethernet based solutions. This is purely because they add greater flexibility and speed. A good example is profinet enabling SIL 3 safety (profisafe) over a single cable or wireless transmission. So when you aren’t behind a desk or on the road meeting customers, what does a day off typically involve for you?

echnology is developing at a phenomenal rate and is only gaining momentum as we approach 2016. While we are still unable to buy hover boards or pilot flying cars, data and computing is getting bigger, faster, and smarter. There will be more data than ever before, it will come from more places that ever before and be stored in more places than ever before. We will be witnessing technology that has only been previously seen in science fiction. Soon everything from your phone to your car will become part of a vast worldwide network, generating data on everything from your customers to your fuel and energy use to help improve your business’s performance.

02 reality computing

01 3D printing

The quantity of data coming from the environment and workplaces, houses and even ourselves can give us more detailed digital representation of the world than ever before. Run it all through super-fast computing and we can get realtime simulations of everything from airflow in a wind tunnel to the material we need for a new building.

means for you

what it

A machine works like a printer and ‘builds’ an object out of anything from polymers to titanium and even cells. Also called ‘addictive manufacturing technologies’ - the raw materials are fed into a device about the size of a microwave oven with the design loaded creating the shape one drop, or layer at a time.

what it

means for you

Whether you are the supplier or customer, you’ll simply download the file from the manufacturer’s website or email it to the customer. Within a couple of hours (depending on the material) your 3D printer will build it right there - like a scene right out of Star Trek!

Being able to tweak the parameters in design simulations means more control over making the final product and could offer a more cost effective construction. Building projects can be planned down to minute detail using the most optimum design without laying a single brick, creating more user and environmentally friendly structure and spaces.

#fact... 03 the industrial internet

We are already seeing the rapid expansion of sensors and devices connected to the Internet, all of them reading, recording and communicating constantly. They’ll be attached to plane engines, manufacturing robots, your smartphone and much more, and they will generate more data than we’ve ever dreamed of to tell us how our machines and tools are performing.

A deep tan damages blood vessels so much that it may take 4 to 15 months to recover.

Maintenance will shift from reactive to preventive, saving operation costs and give more insight into performance. Machines and software will alert us when it needs something fixed or replaced by synthesising zettabytes (that’s a thousand, thousand, thousand gigabytes) of data. any industries require the operation of electronic machinery in hazardous environments. Mines, oil rigs, processing facilities and production plants sometimes have high concentrations of vapours or extremely fine dust that are potentially explosive. Companies continually look for ways to increase plant safety, and a growing area of focus is ensuring that equipment meets the required safety standards for equipment being used in these environments. Proposed and championed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), IECEx certifies that an instrument, control or other device is safe to be used in hazardous environments anywhere in the world without significant modification. The certification recognises common acceptable levels of safety, enabling products to be freely sold in all major markets. A

re we shying away from the humble panel meter? As the market focuses on new products that offer more advanced capabilities, many companies are hesitant to invest money into products that do not appear technologically advanced or perceived to be the latest and greatest. Aside from the occasional spin off product release, panel meter development has remained relatively static over the last few years.

So where does this leave panel meters? Well with the cost of newer technology shadowing anything we have seen before, not to mention the complexity that comes with more expensive devices including the continuous upkeep cost, the panel meter is becoming the compact cost-effective alternative. However with some of the latest panel meters featuring more advanced and versatile control options these days, it may be gaining back some of its lost dominance.

Panel Meter Market Trends Panel meter sales have traditionally come from maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) customers who buy in small quantities for stand alone systems. In these circumstances, the devices are typically used to read and display a value for a range of applications that include conveyor speed, water pressure, part counts and material weights. Recently, the market has expanded to include more comprehensive applications.

“...panel meters are being used as a convenient means for local control, a component in redundant backup systems and as a media converter to communication buses.

| FEATURE

Manufacturers like Red Lion have invested heavily into ensuring the panel meters are here for a long time to come. In addition to simply displaying information, panel meters are being used as a convenient means for local control, a component in redundant backup systems and as a media converter to communication buses. Displaying Status Information Displaying information for a line/factory worker provides instant feedback on status information ranging from production target numbers and machine speed rates to tangible production goals. Displaying data goes a long way to not only keep workers informed, but also help to increase overall worker productivity through driving efficient speeds. We found that local displays were important for simple machine control. Workers are able to make adjustments in real time to respond to changing conditions helping to keep the entire process running as efficiently as possible. Additionally, existing maintenance staff should be able to support the equipment so programming engineers are no longer required for PLC support. Building Redundant Systems For many applications, panel meters can be used in addition to PLCs as part of a redundant system. In assembly line applications, PLCs control speeds to ensure the conveyor does not exceed set maximum speeds. However if PLC failure occurs, there is no way to control and maintain set speeds that may result in expensive production malfunctions. That is why many machine builders often connect a panel meter to the system to help diminish risks associated with PLC failure. Programmed to provide the operator with speed readouts, the panel meter will cut off conveyor power should over speed occurrences happen. The combination of panel meters and PLCs to control machines helps to ensure continuous operations. Connectivity is king Panel meters have come a long way when it comes to connectivity to different communication busses and protocols. There are some that now support serial ASCII communications, Modbus RTU, DeviceNet, Profibus-DP and much more. As a result the panel meter is now being used as a signal media converter as well as providing local indication for the operator. The humble panel meter may not be so humble after all.

understanding machine safety

any plant owners and manufacturers of machinery may not be aware that since June 30 2014, the safety standards in Australia have adopted the ISO 13849-1:2006, as a new section of the standards for the safety of machinery (AS4024.1503).

the new

standard

Widely used and understood, the original method was based on the categories of the safety-related parts of the control systems. The methodology employed five levels: Categories B, 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Aram Dehghani

In the ISO 13849-1 performance levels require a determination of the probability of dangerous failure, and this is considered to be a more comprehensive indicator of functional safety. A safety function is allocated one of five levels called performance levels (PLa,

PLb, PLc, PLd & PLe). These performance levels are defined in terms of probability of dangerous failure per hour. In this approach the categories are used as a basis. To ascertain the system performance level, the mean time to dangerous failure (MTTFd) reflecting reliability and the Diagnostic Coverage (DC) which indicates the extent of fault detection in the safety system, are to be calculated.

SAFETY SENSOR RSS16 Series SAFETY CURTAIN SLC 440 COM Series SLC440COM Series Safety Light Curtains and Grids are an economical solution offering the highest level of protection. Available with resolutions of 14mm, 30 mm or 35mm and protection field heights between 330 and 1770 mm. Suited for use in safety circuits up to CAT 4 (AS 4024), PLe (EN 13849) or SIL3 (IEC 61508).

The housing will appear familiar to the users of electromagnetic safety switches because it has the same dimensions as the AZ 16 safety switch which is being used considerably in many industries around the world and is heralded to be “the” safety switch. The difference to the AZ 16 is that the RSS 16 does not have a mechanical actuator. The identification of the target is contactless using RFID technology by Schmersal.

product brief

Facilitating and understanding the new standard as well as promoting its usage, can be provided by Control Logic as a comprehensive training session. ustralians are passionate about sport, with figures showing we spend in excess of 8 billion a year on sport recreation and equipment alone. We watch it, we read about it, we talk about it, and occasionally we get involved and play it. With sport playing such a large part of our social network have you ever stopped and wondered what sport is the most popular? The idea of popularity can be broken down into most searched, most attended and most played, and that is not recognising gender or regional differences. Let’s investigate.

Australian Rules Football is clearly the most popular spectator sport in Australia, however when you look at participation the results change a bit. More men cycle, play cricket or play tennis. Rugby league is a highly popular sport, but not to play. What people are interested in and search for online can be quite different to what they actually go to watch. This highlights the difficulty in defining ‘popular’ sport - is it what people are most interested in? What they play the most? Or what they prefer to watch?

Ease tuning and maintenance of your ABB drives with two new smartphone apps from ABB.

A

BB recently announced new smartphone applications for its variable speed drives, helping save time, ease troubleshooting and improve drive performance via convenient technology of the Internet of Things, Services and People (IoTSP). There are two applications available; they are simply called ‘Drivetune’ and ‘Drivebase’.

APP 1: Drivetune ABB’s Drivetune allows service engineers and installers to easily connect to a drive via wireless Bluetooth connection. Then, using a user-friendly smartphone interface, the installer can more quickly and efficiently commission and tune a drive’s performance, allowing quick resolution of any initial issues without being forced to take the drive offline.

Saving time & money For manufacturers focused on their core businesses, the cost of commissioning and maintaining drives is growing increasingly important. Leveraging technology of the IoTSP, make it convenient for customers to access data from their drives and help improve operations to make better decisions. “You can now locate a drive in a factory and check its health and performance with your smartphone just as easily as scanning a QR code or connecting a device via Bluetooth similar to those that consumers use every day,” said Barbara Frei, Managing Director of ABB’s Drives and Controls business. “There’s going to be a sharp increase in the adoption of these technologies in both discrete and process automation as customers seek new ways to unlock the performance benefits of big data while lowering their total cost of ownership.”

Get the truth on the pros and cons of snowboarding and skiing, and find out which one you should tackle first this winter.

CLN | ISSUE 02 | JUN-SEP ‘15

Thinking about a winter holiday in the snow? If you’re heading to the slopes for the first time, you may be deciding whether you should learn skiing or snowboarding first. Maybe you have finally decided to give snowboarding a go after mastering skiing. Lets look at the pros and cons. Ease of learning Skiing: The initial learning curve is pretty fast. You use independent leg movement, and once you’ve got the hang of the snowplough turn (usually on the first or second day) you’re capable of skiing around the whole mountain (depending on how steep they are). Poles will help keep you upright and standing. Bumps and ice are no problems for skiing, but getting up after falls can take a bit of time getting your stuff together again. Snowboarding: Brutal in the beginning. Practice when the snow is soft, or expect a few bruises. Both feet are clamped together, and you lean back or forward to turn. Backside turns have your toes facing where you’re going, and frontside you edge with your heels. Many snowboarders say that frontside is the more stable way to go, even though it may appear alien at first.

| SPORT & TRAVEL

Adrenaline factor

Potential injuries

If you’re just looking for speed and nothing else, you may be surprised to know that skiing is faster in terms of velocity. A skier with the same skillset as a snowboarder will always be faster, although a snowboarder will always seem to look that little bit cooler doing it.

Skiing: Your knees are most at risk here, although get into a collision and head and upper body injuries might occur.

Convenience Skiing: walking to the lifts is the worst part, as you clump along with your ski boots open, dropping skis, poles, gloves and goggles as you go. You can try and look cool with your skis on your shoulder, but they slip apart and hurt your collarbone. Once on the chairlift and then the mountain, you’re good to go. Easy! Snowboarding: You walk through the car park looking the part in your boots and snowboard under one arm. You quickly pass the skiers, however once on the mountain, a snowboard can be restrictive. To ride a lift you need to remove your back foot, and then sit in the snow to strap your foot back in. Flat sections on the mountain are embarrassing, as you try and gain momentum hopping or bending up and down to get some form of speed.

Snowboarding: Your legs are fine, but your ankles may ache, and your upperbody injuries are frequent. Your wrists are in danger from potential falls. Skiing to Snowboarding Is it hard? After all you know how to ski already. For starters you have the advantage of understanding edging, carving and your environment however it won’t be a walk in the park. Expect to fall over many times during the initial stages as you learn to adjust to your feet being clamped together. Most skiers tend to go much further in their first few days of snowboarding than they did with skiing with a similar time frame. Just don’t expect to ride like a pro in a few days.

Snowboarding on ‘powder snow’ or soft snow is amazing, and works a lot more naturally than skiing, however snowboarding on hard snow increases your risk factor.

did you know

Snowboarding was inspired by surfing and skateboarding, and was designed by Sherman Poppen for his children in 1965. It was a skateboard without wheels, steered by a handheld rope.

Once the list has been finalised, it is automatically sent to the next available consultant to provide further information including a price so you can make an informed decision on what product is best for you.

Where to start? Your Quote

Search via the list of categories on your left, and select a product of interest. There may be sub-categories you will need to select to get to the individual product page.

Here you will find your summary of products with ID, name and description. You can remove items from your list at this stage. Once happy with your selection, click on ‘Finalise my quote’ to be taken to the details page. Don’t forget to leave any comments or additional questions you may have in the comments box. Click on ‘Submit’.

Once on the product page you will notice an ‘Add to Quote’ button located to your right above the product image. Simply click on this button to add to your list/cart. From here you have the option to keep browsing and continue to add products. Don’t worry, your list saves automatically. When done, click on ‘View my Quote’ located to the right on top of the search bar to view and finalise your list.

A consultant will be in contact within 24 hours with further information if requested and the best price. You’re done!
