BMW group chooses Pfannenberg

Thermal management specialist Pfannenberg has concluded an exclusive agreement with the BMW Group on thermal management solutions for its production plants worldwide. Pfannenberg’s offering included the right thermal management solution for every cooling requirement in order to provide an efficient, smooth production sequence. In particular, This robot duck could help Japanese rice Pfannenberg’s ‘e-Cool’ series of cooling units stood farmers keep paddy fields clear of weeds out for its strong performance, intelligent control and maintenance friendly design. For centuries, rice farmers in Asia have used ducks as a natural alternative to pesticides. While paddling around in flooded paddy fields, ducks tear up weeds and snack on insects, with their manure even acting as additional fertilizer. In the 21st century, this practice is not widespread, but a new technological twist on the method could change that. An engineer working for Japanese carmaker Nissan has built a robot alternative to paddy field ducks. The prototype Aigamo robot is named after the breed of duck used in the modern version of this ancient practice. The robot weighs 1.5 kilograms and is about the size of a large robot vacuum cleaner. Two rotating rubber brushes on its underside take the place of a duck’s feet, which oxygenate the water by stirring it up and preventing weeds from taking root. Aww it’s so cute.

Plug-and-play devices lets you opt out

04

About half of your internet bandwidth is devoted to tracking you and serving up ads. Besides slowing down your Netflix streams, all that Internet activity helps companies paint an intricate portrait of you and your habits. Winston Privacy, a cybersecurity startup has built a new plug-and-play device that lets everyday internet users opt out of this tracking. Designed to be set up by anyone, Winston plugs in between the user’s modem and router. The device then encrypts the traffic coming from all devices on the network and mixes it with traffic from other Winston users and routes it through other random Winston devices before sending it to its final destination. On the receiver’s end, that means your data arrives from everchanging IP addresses, making it difficult to connect your data back to your location.

‘FYTA Beam’ acts as smart sensor Claudia Nassif and Sylvie Baslers have developed FYTA Beam, a smart plant sensor that ‘gives your plant a voice,’. The FYTA Beam measures soil moisture, nutrition, light intensity, and temperature. It monitors the plant’s environment and sends the user an alert when change needs to happen. If you have several plants, you can connect several FYTA Beams via Bluetooth with each other to create a network of up to 100m transmission range. Download the FYTA app and have the ability to identify plants, build a virtual collection of the plants in your garden and find tutorials for the best possible plant life. The product was funded originally on Kickstarter.

The world’s very first and the only digital circuit breaker has been certified for commercial use. The digital breaker, as opposed to the mechanical breaker, makes it quite easy to manage power and is about 3,000 times faster. Most have had some experience with a mechanical breaker, also known as the fuse box featuring switches that are designed to trip to prevent overloads. Digital circuit breakers rely on solid-state semiconductors and software for managing the power’s flow from different sources known as Distributed Energy Resources (DER). The digital platform is able to fuse together the inflowing streams into a single hyperintelligent device that is able to adjust the amperes in terms of demand and application dynamically. Instead of using mechanics to switch the power, digital inputs are applied which removes moving parts. Things like iPhones and iPads can then be connected for remote power management for efficiency.

Designer creates glasses for shorter people Designer Dominic Wilcox is making rounds on the Internet because of his periscope glasses. Why you ask? It will enable the wearer to observe roughly 30.5 centimetres taller. This means that you’lll be able to enjoy concerts even if you have taller people in front of you! The glasses come with a small mirror that has been positioned upwards at an angle of forty-five degrees towards a bigger mirror that points outwards. The project kicked off after Dominic Wilcox was given a challenge by Microsoft Surface for solving everyday problems by coming up with creative and extraordinary solutions. He was inspired to create these periscope glasses when he attended a music gig and saw a shorter attendee having trouble seeing the stage. You can’t buy these glasses as yet, however, they have been displayed at the Extraordinary Solutions to Everyday Problems exhibit.

Superior experience for rail transport There is a continuing move towards greater suburbanisation, with more and more people working daily or attending events in the central cities but choosing to live further and further out in ever-expanding suburban communities. That means more and more people need to get back and forth, and the traffic situation on the roads leading into many major cities, especially during rush hours, is becoming more and more unsustainable. Metropolitan rail lines in many areas are trying to convince these customers to reconsider their transportation choices. Many of their actions are physical infrastructure related, such as building new stations further and further out and constructing more car park capacity.

06

As operators are working to make rail transportation more productive and convenient for commuters, as well as for regional passengers, network technologies are taking on a visible and vital role. For example, local and regional railways are using Ethernet communications to disseminate more real-time train information, such as extremely accurate arrival times at both ends. They are also investing in robust Wi-Fi access that is bandwidthfriendly and stable throughout the trip, even during peak access times. This includes subway tunnels and on long distance trains that often run through remote areas, allowing passengers to reliably communicate with the office, work online, play games, access social media and even stream movies. For overseas visitors especially, Wi-Fi availability is highly desirable for being able to reliably confirm plans for the next leg of their journey, such as arranging for a ride share or taxi pick-up or checking the status of an airplane flight.

Rail transport safety is a top priority

topus’ ann ‘Oc itches m h c s Hir ed sw manag

As in other industries, advanced network technologies are helping the railway industry to improve the safety of every stakeholder. For example, advanced line signalling systems are communicating car and track information in real time, helping trains respond appropriately to stopped cars, poor track conditions and other hazards. The trains not only talk to the central location but talk to each other as well.

Rail Transport Benefits include allowing cars to safely move at closer distances, increasing capacity and ultimately faster travel times. In addition, network technologies have boosted the effectiveness of security video surveillance to help ensure the safety of both passengers and staff. Transmitting live data from a moving vehicle has always been a technical challenge. Whereas before video might have been archived on the train and looked at later if needed, Ethernet now enables it to be streamed live in real time to a central location from nearly any distance or area. This allows medical and law enforcement personnel to be able to see events as they unfold, and to be better able to respond quickly and appropriately to any situation.

As passengers, we appreciate that the rail industry in general is very safety-conscious and risk averse. Their policy of maintaining high priority for any transmission related to safety has traditionally necessitated that the lines construct two parallel systems—one for important but not urgent communications such as maintenance data and passenger entertainment, and one for urgent real time safety information. This would ensure that the transmission of details on an imminent track obstruction wouldn’t be slowed down by the uploading of someone’s YouTube video. Now, with the emergence of Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN), an Ethernet-based technology that offers the ability to automatically prioritise transmissions, there is the promise of a huge cost savings since operators can use a single network for everything while maintaining optimum safety and maximum bandwidth.

Rail transport cyber security advances As on the factory floor, digitisation is allowing the rail industry to be significantly more effective in their predictive maintenance efforts, that is, collecting and analysing data to determine when a particular system or asset might fail. Indeed, sensors are sending information back to the central location on everything from water levels in the lavatories to door speeds tracking wear conditions. For example, they might compare the exact time it takes for the automatic passenger doors to open and close. If it increases by a particular amount, they can send a technician to attend to the door motor. Finally, as in many industrial environments, with the increase in connectivity there is also an increase in vulnerability as previously closed systems are now open to the public Internet. Like other industries, the rail industry is slowly realising how vulnerable they can be. They are becoming proactive in taking steps to protect their networks from hackers, malware and even user error. These cyber threats can negatively impact rail transport such as train movements and location, passenger information, comfort and Wi-Fi as well as things such as ticketing, safety and other connectivity-dependent systems. All of the cyber security techniques in the factory apply here as well—like separating zones with firewalls, monitoring network activity, inventorying and updating firmware and patches on all assets, keeping up to the minute on known vulnerabilities, and so on. There’s more coming in the future as connectivity technologies continue to advance and there are more creative ideas coming as technologies open up new possibilities for productivity increases and cost-savings.

The future starts now As we are asking more from our rail systems and are pushing the boundaries of what has previously been possible, we need to make sure that technology is able to keep up with these requirements. Companies like Hirschmann are looking to the future by implementing cyber security features and integrating TSN into existing hardware suitable for Industrial environments. This is integral for the advancement of technology in rail and the transport industry in general.

CLOSER LOOK |

I

t’s been touted as Hirschmann’s next generation compact managed Industrial Ethernet switch with a refocus on Industrial Cyber Security (ICS) and advanced hardware such as TSN support. In this ‘Closer Look’ we’ll be checking out the BOBCAT series of rail switches to see what the fuss is about.

first impressions Opening the cardboard box felt like opening a birthday present and I was greeted with a typical Hirschmann manual and DVD. Buried underneath securely tucked away inside a jigsaw puzzle of folded cardboard was the BOBCAT BRS50. You can immediately tell that it is not one of the OpenRAIL series products (which it is destined to replace) as it looks just a little more refined with rounded corners, redesigned LEDs, a digital input contact block and a USB-C interface.

N N A M H C HIRS

0 5 S R B h c t i w s ’ t a ‘bobc

let’s get it started! Since one of the new features of the BOBCAT is the USB-C interface which acts as the serial port, with ACA backup memory adaptor slot and a localised management access ethernet port (it’s not a regular switch port and doesn’t grant access to the other devices connected to the switch). I chose that as my method for setup. After powering up the device and connecting the USB-C port to my PC I was greeted with a small flash drive popup which contained a README file with some instructions for Windows 7, Windows 10 and Linux. A few clicks later after following the setup guide, I had a network interface card to access the switch using the web interface, telnet, SNMP or SSH (with a DHCP assigned address so that I didn’t have to worry about setting it myself). The graphical user interface is a pure HTML5 website with no java applet required which is a refreshing change from the OpenRAIL switches and flicking through the options showed me that Hirschmann has tried its best to maintain the layout from the java applet interface with a few notable exceptions such . ance.. as the Filter menu allowing l g a t a you an instant search function to find the right t menu and a daylight suppor thernet E ss N S T e savings option for Mbits/s ed acce ention Real-tim ire-spe e (DoS) prev 00/2500 w 0 • g 1 / in 0 d 0 ic v 1 controlling the inclu ial-of-ser i-speed ration n atures, • 4 tr time offset urity feautomatic de fied mig c li e p s im d s e anc L) & s for from UTC. • Advntrol lists (AC system legacy co h it w y ilit roperab esign • Inte strial d u d in t s u • Rob

main features The BOBCAT range is running on Hirschmann’s HiOS operating system which has been around long enough to exceed the feature set of the previous generation switches such as the OpenRAIL series running the “Classic” operating system. From a hardware point of view the BOBCAT has a digital input contact which can be used to trigger an alarm for an external input. When someone opens the cabinet for example with other potential future uses for the input as well (think of the potential of changing a configuration from the digital input). HiOS improves upon the device status feature which gave an overview of the hardware status. Think of temperature, port status, redundancy status and power supply status with the addition of the security status feature allowing for you to monitor devices which have insecure configurations such as having non-encrypted protocols including HTTP, TELNET, HiDiscovery, with enabled or default passwords.

“The graphical user interface is a pure HTML5 website with no java applet required..” Another feature tested was the ‘auto-disable’ function which allows the user to intelligently enable ports. These are disabled due to security settings, so that the device disabling the port can be resolved. This saves you a phone call to your network operations department if someone carelessly connects the wrong equipment with MAC address filtering as an example. The hardware has some new additional options as well, and now ranges from 4x 100mbit ports all the way up to 12 full Gigabit ports. In this test, the BRS50 has 4 2.5Gbit ports. The 2.5Gbit SFPs used for testing looked much like the traditional 1Gbit SFPs and using the same cables I was able to setup a 5Gbit redundant ring configuration with 3 of the BRS50 units with no problems.

final verdict I knew what to expect with the BOBCAT unit but I was still pleasantly surprised from opening the box to a full running switch. The whole process felt super smooth with no additional software required for my PC. The new web interface was easy to navigate including the filter menu, daylight saving profiles and of course adjusting the default configuration to get rid of the security status alarm. I would highly recommend the BOBCAT series switches for anyone who is looking for an Industrial Ethernet switch which takes Industrial Cyber Security seriously. It makes every effort to ensure the usability of the device does not significantly decrease as the security level increases.

Adam Rickards, technology and comms enthusiast talks to us about the future of transport & automation. Hey Adam, as the resident Hirschmann guru, what interesting changes have you seen over the years within this product range? The introduction of their HiOS range has allowed them to refocus their efforts on Industrial Cyber Security (ICS) - which is massive at the moment, to ensure that not only are they producing high quality reliable products to meet the technical needs of customers, but also the ICS needs now and in the future. How do you see its implementation within the transport industry? What are the game changers? Hirschmann are working hard to improve their industrial wireless range to help shore up some of the weaknesses and allow customers to take advantage of the strengths of PRP (Parallel Redundancy Protocol) for seamless (zero pack loss) roaming from train-to-trackside. Where do you see our transport industry in 10 years? Automation is becoming more and more prevalent with multi-service Ethernet backbone networks. Services such as CCTV, Public Wifi, passenger information systems, ticketing systems are now the norm. Thoughts on home automation? I am surprised home automation is in such an infant state with just a handful of companies offering packaged systems, however the hobby market in this space is very strong! Is this something you are passionate about? I enjoy clever technology that changes the way we think or makes life easier for people. Tell us something we may not have known about you I have lived in the same house since I was 19 years old. Most prized possession? My computer desk that my father built for me. I use it everyday, and have grown quite attached to it. Anything else to add? We’ve had a lot of enjoyable training seminars over the last 12 months, and in 2020 we hope to make them even more engaging and enjoyable - keep a look out! Thanks Adam

It’s a well-known fact that excessive temperature affects the life and reliability of electrical equipment. As a rule of thumb, the maximum enclosure temperature should be at least 10°C lower than the manufacturer’s recommended maximum operating temperature. Factors that are likely to lead to high outdoor electrical enclosure temperatures include:

Natural ventilation is inexpensive, quick to install and fulfil a fundamental need to remove generated hot air. Because of the limited electrical parts, life expectancy is + 5 years and cheap to replace. They can come in UV resistance up to IP 55 and can filter out dust that is being either blown in or suck into the cabinet. Which present a maintenance cost of cleaning or replacing the filter regularly. Moreover, the fact that fans circulate the surrounding ambient air, there’s no ability to cool below hot ambient temperatures and remove the water molecules. For applications near the ocean or chemically corrosive solvents, this presents a problem for reducing the life span of the electrical equipment.

HEAT EXCHANGER 3

Think cold UK winters, where buildings have a centralised heating system in the basement and oil heat exchangers in every room. This concept serves a practical purpose that cools numerous cabinets from one cooling source. For instance, a water treatment site can repurpose piped water into the heat exchangers. The liquid is free and costs nothing to cool because the underground pipes keep it below 20 degrees all the time. Systems such as these are large scale and ideal for Variable Speed Drive cooling solutions. At the same time being very cost-efficient with air conditioner like performance, without the ongoing electrical cooling bill. Incorporating heat exchangers into the chiller existing pipe network is very practical for most buildings. Heat exchangers key advantage is no heat is given off into the adjacent air space, unlike air conditioners that pump out as much cold air as hot air via the condenser. Heat exchangers work in extremely high operating temperatures, have a high degree of IP protection and have maintenance-free electronics to service.

AIR CONDITIONER

Air conditioners have an internal air space that isolates the outside elements. Interior air is blown across cold fins, making it an effective outdoor electrical enclosure cooling solution. Notably, in terms of high IP rating of NEMA 4/4X, ability to eliminate cabinet hot spots and cooling below ambient air temperatures. They come in many forms, from side-mounted to top-mounted, ranging from 300watts to 6KW and an all in one contained product, using stainless steel to ensure environmental compatibility. Perfect for applications in mining, chemical processing plants, food and beverage.

ellular connectivity has become a major part of Industrial Networks and is being used considerably more for remote access, predictive maintenance, and monitoring of assets. Setting up a cellular device can be tricky as there are many variables that can affect the reliability and speed of a cellular connection. Before installing a device, some questions need to be asked so that we maximise the availability of our network.

Environmental considerations The environment plays a significant role in a cellular installation including, water, glass, hills and mountains, which all affect the behaviour of a signal. A signal may reflect or bounce off an object causing the signal to take a different path to the receiver than the original, arriving out of sync, and potentially causing data loss. As a signal travels through a wall, it will absorb some of that signal causing it to weaken, so this must be considered when installing a device indoors. Another major factor is EMI (Electro-magnetic interference), which the antennas view as noise. Noise can have a significant effect on a signal to the point of being completely unusable.

INDUSTRIAL ROUTER

SN-6000 Series

Red Lion’s Sixnet series IndustrialPro® SN 6000 cellular routers with multi-carrier 4G LTE support, provide rugged, reliable communication for monitoring and controlling remote assets and processes in extreme conditions. How to mitigate issues & increase reliability Most traditional antennas are omnidirectional which means they radiate RF in multiple directions in a 360-degree plane. In most cases, omnidirectional antennas Using a higher gain antenna is one way to increase the performance as this will will meet your installation needs, alleviate some loss from EMI, or any other factor. The higher gain the however, there will be times when a antenna has, the higher the link budget will be and the more directional antenna may be required. factors it can mitigate. Increasing an antenna’s gain For example, if there is more than one simply focuses the radiated RF into narrower cellular tower within a small geographic patterns such that there appears to be more area. Using an omnidirectional antenna, power coming from the antenna. it is going to receive a signal from both towers. This can be problematic if the cellular module keeps switching between the two as the signal fluctuates over time. In this case, using a directional antenna that can focus the RF by pointing towards one specific tower will receive that tower’s signal while ignoring the second tower’s signal.

Most of these issues are unavoidable but there are ways to help mitigate their effect so they will have less of an impact on performance and signal quality. A lot of these can be solved with the selection and installation of the antenna.

There are some caveats to consider when choosing this path. Using a directional antenna will mean, if that tower should have problems or become congested with users, the overall received signal will decrease significantly causing the cellular module to possibly disconnect from that tower altogether. With the omnidirectional, the cellular module would scan for a stronger signal and connect to the other cellular tower. Another way to increase performance, is by adding height to the antenna, which can significantly improve the received signal when coupled with a low loss coax cable. Many times, it can come down to simple trial and error. There might be areas on a plant floor that are better suited for receiving signal than others. Sometimes simply moving the antenna to a different location or the device itself can be the difference between a weak or strong signal.

Lightning and surge protection If there is one thing that is unpredictable, it is Mother Nature. Lightning storms can spring up at any time and could cause irreparable damage to a cell router if struck by lightning, especially when installed outdoors or if there is an antenna connected on a roof or side of a building. If the cell router installation is in an area where lightning storms are prevalent, it might be wise to consider installing a lightning arrestor. There are different types you can choose from, depending on your preference. One such arrestor is the gas tube suppressors like Novaris’ RF protectors, that connect between the antenna and the cellular router. The gas inside the arrestor acts as a conductor when a surge occurs by ionizing the gas inside it. The gas then passes the voltage through the ground line until things normalise. After a lightning strike occurs, you will need to replace the gas tube, as it will offer no further protection.

Final thoughts Cellular can be a fast and reliable medium for accessing devices and retrieving data if used properly. Too often, users expect the reliability of a wired medium from cellular when that is simply not a feasible expectation. Cellular is a shared medium, which means every device, from mobile phones to M2M devices to tablets, and a single tower can only handle so many concurrent users and they are all competing for access to the network while sharing bandwidth. Cellular is an extremely useful part of an industrial network and as long as you understand where you are installing your device and what issues you may face, it is relatively simple to mitigate those issues.

megatrends

redefining th e

S

f u t u re of sport

port is more than ever a lifestyle and one of the most important topics of the 21st century. But the way we perceive and define sport is going through enormous transformation processes. These changes are caused by megatrends like individualisation, health, mobility, new work, connectivity and globalisation. Megatrends not only have a global impact, but they are continuously affecting every part of our daily life. For the successful future of the sport industry, there are 5 things to take into account.

MT Mobility

Sport must be brought to the people and not the people to sport.

Being active must blend in with the mobile and flexible lifestyle. Sport and fitness must address the people where they are: On the go. Sportspeople are thankful for every intransit- service, which enables them to be physically active and train wherever they are and whenever they have time. It might be on a journey, between two appointments or at their accommodation.

MT New work

Informal sport communities will replace sport clubs culture New ways of communication and a new approach to a mobile and flexible lifestyle is challenging classic sport clubs and fitness centres. People can no longer commit to a long-term relationship or a contract. They like to be social, but on their conditions. They even like to engage voluntarily, but just on temporary projects. They connect more often in informal sport communities, which they can join whenever their daily life allows it. And wherever they happen to be at that moment.

This is especially relevant for everybody between twenty-something and fifty-plus. The so called middle-ager wish to be more physically active, but work and life limits their capacities. The convenience factor plays an ever increasing role for them. Especially in an era when mobility and flexibility are omnipresent.

20

MT Individualisation

It’s a result of the megatrend mobility that we prospectively will live more than ever in a “in transit society. Whole parts of formal fixed located, everyday routines happen already between two places, from phone calls to eating habits, from meetings to work sessions. People are continuously on the go. And time is luxury.

CLN | ISSUE 16

MT Health Technology is the new co-trainer New healthy lifestyles do not exclude the enthusiasm for consumption, technology, new media – and new types of buying or shopping. Fitbit, Garmin and Apple Watch are already common health tools. They have changed our way of exercising and how we track our daily life. But future smartwatches, activity trackers and wearables will be able to do a lot more than just track, motivate and remind: Next generation wearables will give the individual hobby athlete advice on how to train and exercise correctly. Woven in textures of sportswear from sole to cap and even in sporting tools like balls and paddles, they will be able to take over the role of a trainer and coach. Future wearables can monitor whether movements are done properly and will give specific feedbacks. Both will be able to improve the individual performance and also prevent possible injuries from training without an actual coach.

“Sport and fitness must address the people where they are: On the go.”

MT Connectivity Sports are happening in a real-digital world From Alex, Sire & Co. to daily life communications and networking with digital tools: Already today we live in a world where the gap between analogue and digital life decreases. Innovations like virtual and – maybe even more – augmented reality are pushing this development. The 2 year old phenomena of chasing Pokémons with smartphones might be one of the most popular examples how physical activity and digitalisation were nearly naturally combined. Also new connected wearables, sport gadgets and fitness machines close the gap between online/offline. But it’s not only the new network between human beings and machines which will scape future real-digital sport experiences. Technology has given people enormous potential to get in touch with each other. Non-organised sport communities are rising all over the world. Sport is lifestyle and needs redefining More than ever before, today’s society offers the possibility to overcome social and cultural limitations. People can choose their own lifestyle, adapt and change it if necessary. This mindset is also influencing terms like sport, fitness and exercising. Every individual may have a different understanding of physical activity and a different motive to get active. For the sport industry it’s absolutely necessary to know and address the different needs and mindsets of future customers. Motives range from pro-active fandom to creative, geeky exercise ideas. Some people might just need some slow form of physical activity like walking or Tai Chi, whilst others use sport products to be stylish and for show. Other motives are health reasons, desire for community, a better performance or an adrenalin boost. And the same customer might have different motives in different situations. Individualisation will continue.

Introducing higher future costs when reconfiguring the network, device locations supplying individual power and communications cabling varies building extremities. PoE, on the other hand, substantially reduces the cost of building large-scale smart cities, road and rail infrastructure by combining both power and Ethernet in one cable, but it’s not without its limitations.

The PoE standard IEEE 802.3af was introduced 20 years and increases the network communication speed to 10Gbs. Infact, the ago, defining the voltage and current transmission practice standard applies to both type 3 (previously known as PoE++) and type over Ethernet. Well known for powering phone handsets 4 into the ruling, defining support for a maximum of 60 watts and 100 of up to 15 watts via a technology called VoIP (Voice over watts, respectively. The majority of devices however require more over 100 metres of Cat5e cable. panning a mind-blowing 5.5 million square kilometres, the Amazon is the largest rainforest on the face of the Earth. This untamed wilderness is home to as many as 40,000 species of plant, several thousand species of birds, over four hundred mammals and 2.5 million different insects. That handful of numbers alone is probably enough to make you feel overwhelmed! To help ease your mind, you’ll find all the information you need so that you can start planning your Amazon trip.

Getting there The vast rainforest spans nine different South American countries including Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia – although it’s most prominent in Brazil.

The best time to go In truth, the Amazon jungle can be explored all year round. Even in spite of its enormity, the weather conditions here don’t really vary between seasons – expect it to be warm, rainy and humid. January to June marks the wet season, with temperatures sitting between 23 and 30ºC. Throughout this half of the year, daily showers are common and can sometimes be heavy. Increased rainfall makes the rainforest feel cooler and the river levels higher. This makes accessing the river easier and swimming more plausible. It’s also worth mentioning that the greater humidity means there are more mosquitos about. The second half of the year, July to December, marks the dry season. During this time temperatures average around 26 to 40ºC and although there’s less rain, heavy showers are still not unheard of. Decreased rainfall makes jungle feel drier and the river levels lower. This makes exploring on foot easier and offers a great opportunity to spot caimans as they compete for shorter food supplies.

24

Planning to visit the Peruvian Amazon? Flights can be arranged into Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado from Cusco. Hoping to experience the Brazilian Amazon? Flying into Manaus in the north is your best option. If it’s the Ecuadorian Amazon you’re after, then you can take a bus from Quito into Tena City (five hours) where you can hop in a pickup truck. Or, if you’re eager to explore the Bolivian Amazon, fly from La Paz to Rurrenabaque (around 45 minutes) and then ride a motor-boat upriver to Madidi. Joining a short, escorted, group tour is an easy way to escape the trouble of organisation!

Fauna

What you will see

The Amazon Rainforest houses 10% of the planet’s known species, so there’s plenty for wildlife enthusiasts to get excited about. Hiding high in the canopy you might spot slow-moving sloths and all manner of monkeys including howler, spider, tamarin, capuchin and squirrel – to name but a few. Bring along your binoculars too for a closer look at brightly-billed toucans and scarlet macaws. Lurking on the rainforest floor and on the leaves of lower lying plants you might see sinister-looking snakes such as green anacondas, boa constrictors and eyelash vipers. Also, look out for tiny poisonous dart frogs and cleverly camouflaged insects like the leaf-mimic katydid and moss-mimic stick insect.

Living on the river banks you might find capybara families playing, caimans looking for their next meal and tapirs nibbling on low-hanging branches. Whilst in its murky waters, you may see pink river dolphins coming up for air and giant otters tucking into their fish suppers.

Flora If you’re more of a plant person, the Amazon offers up lots for green-fingered explorers too. Some of the most fascinating and unusual species include giant water lilies (or Victoria Amazonica), spaghetti passion flowers and monkey brush vines. It’s a brilliant destination for tree lovers too. You won’t be able to walk through the jungle without coming across the humungous roots of the kapok tree. These giants can reach over 60 metres in height!

did you know The Amazon is thought to have 2.5 million species of insects. More than half the species in the Amazon rainforest are thought to live in the canopy.

And, for the foodies amongst us, you’ll also be able to spot the plants that some of our favourite foodstuffs come from including coffee, cacao and bananas.

Where you’ll stay The most prominent style of accommodation you’ll come across in the Amazon is jungle lodges, regardless of which section you’re visiting. And whilst you can get some incredibly luxury or extremely basic ones, most sit around the 3-star mark. In these lodges, you’ll usually stay in a comfortable twin share or double cabin with an ensuite bathroom. Rooms will be kitted out with mosquito nets and a fan to keep you cool and protected at night.

Activities on offer During your time in the Amazon, the days will be filled by jungle walks and river cruises. These will likely happen at varying times each day to give you an insight into how your surroundings can change. On some nights you’ll have the option to take part in an after-dark jungle walk, offering you the opportunity to spot some nocturnal animals. But if you’re not keen, no worries, you can choose to simply kick back in a hammock. Bear in mind that the day’s schedule can change depending on the weather. Other activities that are sometimes available include rafting, canoeing and swimming.

dr!ft

damar.biz/drift Dr!ft is a small scale remote control car system controlled via your smartphone. Handmade in Germany, it’s a scale model that performs with the same driving dynamics as a racing car to produce a ‘real racing simulator’. Using a bespoke chassis design with a series of motors and servos, the cars steer and spin their wheels allowing you to drift and slide them on your desk. Underneath the body is the real secret to the Dr!ft car’s performance, a small 360° rotating, height actuating trolley with drive wheels and balance adjuster screws. This is what allows the car to raise, dive and slide through turns so convincingly. The cars have a micro usb port in the base of them for charging them.

User friendly and highly flexible control and monitoring system wh ich provides immediate feedback on current and past fuelling Accurate fuel and flui d inventory levels on demand, avoiding the need to manually ent er fuel and fluid data

With obsolete and aging parts, the company was experiencing decreased efficiency and time losses. With a fleet of over 1000 vehicles spread across 7 sites, the client required an automatic fuel filling station with minimal manual or external control or input. All sites run 7 days a week with limited downtime availability for the upgrade process. A vital requirement needed was a system upgrade that would be relevant long into the future and provide the recording and accuracy to trace the flow of products from supply to dispatch.

Emers o RX3i n PLC

For each site, there was a requirement to remove the existing control system and install and test the new system within a 6 hour window. The panel design and construction needed to meet local environment conditions suitable for water, oil and chemicals along with strict gas environment conditions. In addition the existing field equipment needed to be fully tested and reintegrated into the new control system. The responsibility of the fuelling console is to control the dispensing of fluids to each vehicle and record the details in a format suitable to be transferred to a SAP system. The records can include fuel and fluids usage, odometer, bay and site details, travel distance, vehicle pressures, time and date formatting, system and / or vehicle errors and warnings.

In addition to long-term financial gains through increased productivity, and quicker, more accurate reporting, there are a range of benefits to the system including:

• • • • • •

• Reducing the risk the recording of incorrect or inaccurate data • Secure delivery point of sale • System access and control to authorised personnel only • Standardised system design with minimal system training required Suitable for any vehicle fleet that regularly utilises a central refuelling/refilling location Flexible data arrangement to suit customers requirements Logging of daily and weekly vehicle data Maintenance overview displays for fast and reliable fault finding and maintenance Ability to review and resend past recorded records Accurate logging of system losses Logging of system interaction

This provides the users with accurate fuel and fluid inventory levels at any given point in time and avoids the requirement to manually enter fuel and fluid data. running c-code on a plc

ck by Ja

lmost all PLC programming makes use of IEC 61131-3 programming languages such as Ladder Diagram, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagram, which can at times limit the functionality of a control system. Fortunately, Emerson PLCs have the option of using C function blocks thanks to the PACSystems C Programmer’s Toolkit, which can allow complex tasks to be handled much easier, ultimately leading to a more streamlined process with greater functionality.

Nally

2.

Program running on an Rx3i, showing an input of 12.5 being rescaled to an output of 5312.5.

1. 3.

Read on and find out how to create and run blocks of C code on an Rx3i system using Proficy Machine Edition (PME).

Creating & compiling your code First you’ll need to download and install the C Programmer’s Toolkit for PACSystems. From there you’ll be able to write some code for your PLC. You can do this in any text editor as long as the file is a .c format and is saved in the toolkit’s directory (C:\GE Software\PACSystemsCToolkit\ Projects). Here is an example program which scales a 4-20mA signal to a 0-10,000 range (rescaling).

This program makes use of the Interpolation formula (see “1”). • • • • • •

You must include the PACRCPlc.h file; The main program must be called GefMain; Inputs AND outputs must be in the declaration of GefMain; The datatypes of the inputs and outputs have different syntaxes. Inputs/outputs must be referenced as pointers when called GefMain must always return GEF_EXECUTION_OK.

30

Once your program is ready, run the Toolkit console and navigate to the directory your program is in. Compile the program by running the compileCPACRX <filename> command. After the program has been successfully compiled, a folder called plc will appear in the directory. Within the plc folder will be a file titled <filename>.gefElf.

Incorporating code into PME

Set up the hardware configuration and communication settings so that you can get online to your PLC. In the Navigator window, expand the Target and then Logic menu to show the Program Blocks. Right click on Program Blocks and click Add C Block. Select the .gefElf file in the plc folder from earlier. Once the C block has been added, set the input and output parameters by right clicking the block (in this case Scaling Example, and click properties). In the Inspector window, click the three dots in the parameters section (see “2”). Set the input and output parameters for the block. In this example we have an Input which is a REAL, and an Output which is also a REAL. C blocks are added to programs via CALL functions. Place a call function in a program by selecting where you want the block to appear and type CALL. Once the call block has been placed, double click it and select the C block you wish to call. Populate the inputs and outputs with variables and we’re done! Good Luck!
