What you need to know before buying auto insurance (NC) Canadians are legally required to have auto insurance. Driving without insurance can result in ticketing and fines. It’s also important to know that purchasing insurance from a fraudulent actor has serious consequences. Auto insurance seller fraud is common in all regions of Canada. Here are some important Dos and Don’ts that you need to know before buying auto insurance so you can stay protected. Do: Check that your broker or agent is licensed. All legitimate brokers, agents, and direct-to-consumer insurance companies are regulated by the government. Don’t: Pay in cash or pay a broker ‘fee’.

In most of Canada, a broker is paid in commission by the insurance company it sells a policy from and legitimate brokers don’t charge a fee. Do: Input information yourself when purchasing online. Direct insurers don’t use brokers and you can ensure your information is correct. Don’t: Give incorrect information or overlook it on an insurance slip. Policies can be cancelled and claims can be denied if information is misrepresented. Do: Ensure the policy is connected to your phone number, email and address – so you will know if the policy is cancelled or altered.
Don’t: Ignore mail from insurance companies. Someone may have used your identity to set up a fake policy. Roger Dunbar, the senior vice president of Sonnet Insurance, explains, “Generally, if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. That’s because insurance rates are based on pooled risk - companies need to collect enough money to pay out claims in a given year.” Victims are encouraged to report fraudulent activity. Reporting fraud helps stop repeat offenders and reduces insurance premiums for everyone. To report fraud, contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada. Find more information at IBC.ca

Online dating and social media have made it easier than ever to meet new people and find dates. Unfortunately, it has made scammers’ work simpler, too. Con artists create compelling backstories, and full-fledged identities, then trick you into falling for someone who doesn’t even exist. This form of deception is known as “catphishing.” Sometimes a catphisher is simply a lonely person hiding behind a fake persona. But often it is the first step in a phishing scheme to steal personal information or a romance scam to trick you out of money. In some cases, victims have been tricked into moving illegal money from other scams (“money mule”), which is potentially a crime. How the Scam Works: Most romance scams start with fake profiles on online dating sites created by stealing photos and text from real accounts or elsewhere. Scammers often claim to be in the military or working overseas to explain why they can’t meet you in person. Over a short period of time, the scammer builds a fake relationship with you, exchanging photos and romantic messages, even talking on the phone or through a webcam. Just when the relationship seems to be getting serious, your new sweetheart has a health issue or family emergency, or wants to plan a visit. No matter the story, the request is the same: they need money. But after you send money, there’s another request, and then another. Or the scammer stops communicating altogether. Tips to Spot This Scam: Too hot to be true. Scammers offer up good-looking photos and tales of financial success. Be honest with yourself about who would be genuinely interested. If they seem “too perfect,” your alarm bells should ring. In a hurry to get off the site. Catphishers will try very quickly to get you to move to communicating through email, messenger, or phone.

Moving fast. A catphisher will begin speaking of a future together and tell you they love you quickly. They often say they’ve never felt this way before. Talk about trust. Catphishers will start manipulating you with talk about trust and how important it is. This will often be a first step to asking you for money. Don’t want to meet. Be wary of someone who always has an excuse to postpone meeting because they say they are traveling or live overseas or are in the military. Suspect language. If the person you are communicating with claims to be from your home town but has poor spelling or grammar, uses overly flowery language, or uses phrases that don’t make sense, that’s a red flag. Hard luck stories. Before moving on to asking you for money, the scammer may hint at financial troubles like heat being cut off or a stolen car or a sick relative, or they may share a sad story from their past (death of parents or spouse, etc.). Protect Yourself From this Scam: Never send money or personal information that can be used for identity theft to someone you’ve never met in person. Never give someone your credit card information to book a ticket to visit you. Cut off contact if someone starts asking you for information like credit card, bank, or government ID numbers. Ask specific questions about details given in a profile. A scammer may stumble over remembering details or making a story fit. Do your research. Many scammers steal photos from the web to use in their profiles. You can do a reverse image lookup using a website like tineye.com or images.google.com to see if the photos on a profile are stolen from somewhere else. You can also search online for a profile name, email, or phone number to see what adds up and what doesn’t.

Which option is right for you? (NC) At first glance, prepaid cards and secured credit cards have a lot in common. In reality, though, they help you do very different things. While both can enable you to conveniently make purchases, only one can help you build or repair your credit score. If you’re trying to decide between a prepaid or a secured credit card, consider which of these features are right for you. Prepaid cards: To use a prepaid card, you must first load it with a set amount of money, which acts as your spending limit. It can be a great way to help you make online purchases without using credit. Because you’re using your own money, a prepaid card will not improve your credit score. 20

Prepaid cards can also come with fees. The card issuer may charge you a fee to activate your card, to make purchases, to check the balance, to withdraw money from an ATM, or to transfer funds, all of which can lower the value of your prepaid card. Secured credit cards: Secured credit cards are designed to help you build or rebuild your credit score. Your bank will require a security deposit before issuing you this type of credit card. Your credit limit is equal to or higher than your deposit, and it can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. You may also have to pay a one-time application or set-up fee. This fee is separate from your security deposit. Be aware that you might not get it back if your application is turned down.
Although you’re providing a deposit, you are also spending the bank’s money through credit when you use the card. Once you start using it, you’ll be expected to make monthly payments. If you don’t make your payments on time, you may accumulate interest and your bank may use your deposit to pay the money you owe. You’ll get your security deposit back when you close your account if you have no outstanding payments. Before you accept any card from your bank, make sure you read and understand all the fees, terms and conditions associated with it. Ask questions about anything you don’t understand.
