This exhibition by artist Yinka Shonibare celebrates the diversity of the American population. Inhabiting Cleveland Public Library’s majestic Brett Hall, a center of discovery and debate, the visually striking installation consists of six thousand books covered in the artist’s signature Dutch wax-printed cotton textile, imprinted with the names of notable first and second generation immigrants along with those of African Americans involved in the Great Migration from the American South and individuals who opposed immigration throughout U.S. history. The American Library is inspired by the current debates about immigration, the impact of the refugee crisis, and conversations about global freedom of movement.

t first glance, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, tennis pro Anna Kournikova, guitarist Carlos Santana, and First Lady Melania Trump couldn’t be more different. Even so, they are connected by a single shared factor: they’re all immigrants. This summer, a special art exhibit in Cleveland Public Library’s Brett Hall will highlight the American immigrant experience. The American Library, an installation created by artist Yinka Shonibare MBE (RA), will feature thousands of books wrapped in African wax cloth, their spines emblazoned with the names of first- or secondgeneration U.S. immigrants and African Americans affected by the Great Migration from the American South. Artists, athletes, scientists, musicians, writers, physicians, inventors, architects, and other cultural icons—some famous, some not, but all a part of the American immigration story—will be represented in this exhibit. “The work is archival in its content and is essentially about mining the stories of immigrants to the United States from across the globe,” Shonibare explained via email. “I think a library is an apt setting for this work.” Shonibare’s installation is just one part of the FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art’s larger An American City program. This project, which will span a range of art exhibitions located at major cultural centers throughout Greater Cleveland, opens July 14 and runs through September 30. The Library will join the Cleveland Museum of Art, Transformer Station, 2

Cleveland Public Library will showcase an installation focusing on immigration as part of FRONT International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art, which opens city-wide July 14.

SPACES, Playhouse Square, Akron Art Museum, West Side Market, and many other regional cultural institutions in displaying art exhibitions as part of FRONT International. “Art has been part of the library experience here at Cleveland Public Library since day one,” explains Aaron Mason, Assistant Director of Outreach and Program Services at Cleveland Public Library. “We have an endowment for public art and a long history in investing in art and exposing our patrons to it, from world-class illustrations in children’s books to music and performance art and more. So the content of the FRONT exhibition speaks to our strategic priorities.” The American Library’s potential to bolster community engagement and initiate conversation surrounding a timely topic, as well as providing the opportunity to showcase Shonibare, a significant international artist, further aligns with the Library’s mission.

An Interactive Experience

Shonibare, a London-born artist who grew up in the United Kingdom and Nigeria, is known for his work addressing cultural identity, colonialism, race, class, and the economic and political complexities in relationships between African and European nations. He was awarded the decoration of Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2004 and nominated as a Royal Academician (RA) in 2013. Shonibare lives in the United Kingdom and conceived of The American Library as a sequel to his 2014 The British Library installation, which honored U.K. immigrants. The American Library will be installed in Brett Hall as a large, open bookcase containing thousands of books inscribed with immigrant names. Like Shonibare’s original British installation, The American Library will include an interactive element. Visitors in Brett Hall can scroll through the exhibit’s tablets to read about the immigrant names in greater detail, while other viewers located

anywhere in the country can access an accompanying website to learn about the exhibit or submit their own immigration stories. “We want this exhibit to have a longer reach, to allow all Americans to share their immigration stories,” says Caitie Moore, Project Manager at FRONT International. “That means sharing our pasts and thinking about our own families and origins, which gives the exhibit an introspective angle. Instead of just showcasing famous people, we’re going to ask, ‘What’s your story?’ In this way, it’s more of a conversation.” Those who wish to document their experiences or family histories surrounding immigration should visit the FRONT International website at frontart.org this summer to locate the exhibit site. Interested visitors may also share their stories on social media by tagging posts with #FRONTArt2018. This interactive element is imperative to both Shonibare’s installation and the larger An American City exhibition— as Moore says, it’s all part of the conversation that will play out on a broader scale throughout Cleveland. “FRONT is more than a single exhibit in a single museum,” she says. “It’s an opportunity to have different pieces of artwork reference each other. It’s not something you see once and it’s over. It’s ongoing, and it’s more of a reflection. This is a project that breaks down barriers and invites everyone to take part and enjoy contemporary art.”

The Research

While Shonibare’s studio made the final decisions regarding the installation’s list of immigrants, Cleveland Public Library staff played a significant role in researching and suggesting many of the names that will appear in The American Library. Based on Shonibare’s specifications, dozens of Library employees produced thousands of names of American immigrants who represent a diverse range of professions, countries of origin, genders, races, sexual orientations, and more. Library staff were also sure to include some Cleveland immigrants, including politician George Voinovich, Superman co-creator Joe Shuster, Cleveland Orchestra harpist Carmela Cafarelli, comic book author

Harvey Pekar, restauranteur Maria De La Luz Galindo, and Myra Merrick, the first female physician in Ohio, among others. Mark Tidrick, who currently works as a Library AssistantComputer Emphasis at Collinwood Branch, helped coordinate the Library’s role in this research. He managed incoming immigrant name suggestions, checked sources, and used the Library’s collections whenever possible to verify research. “Considering our current political climate, this is an important exhibit,” Tidrick says. “I think it will be stunning, and it really has the potential to draw a lot of people to the Library.”

The Immigration Debate

Lastly, the books in The American Library will feature not only the names of immigrants, but also some notable dissenters within the immigration debate. For example, conservative political commentator Laura Ingraham, who is known for her stance against immigration, and Joe Arpaio, the former Arizona sheriff who was convicted of criminal contempt and then pardoned by President Trump in 2017 for violating a federal court order to stop racially profiling Latinos, are just two names of immigration dissenters included in the exhibit. “It all comes back to the issue of conversation,” Moore explains. “You can’t have a dialogue with just one side represented. And so dissenters are included, too.” “It’s a debate, and it’s going to remain a complex issue for a long time,” Mason adds of immigration. “While there might not be any easy answers, we do know one thing: isolated cultures die. We need an influx of people with new experiences and skillsets to help society thrive.” As the creator of The American Library, Shonibare describes his installation as a piece that encourages empathy while addressing a critical subject in America’s current political and social landscape. “I hope the Cleveland residents find the work relevant to their own history and the lives of people they know,” Shonibare says. “I hope The American Library will make a significant contribution towards raising important issues of our time.” The People’s University | cpl.org

See Also: Common Energy See Also brings temporary public art to the Eastman Reading Garden each summer. 2018 features an interactive sculpture by Northeast Ohio native, ceramicist, and installation artist, Lauren HerzakBauman. Common Energy, the ninth annual installation of See Also, is made possible through an endowment by the late Lockwood Thompson and generous support from the Char and Chuck Fowler Family Foundation. Common Energy reflects traditional Tibetan prayer wheels, encouraging passersby to spin the wheels and contemplate their positive message based loosely on the Buddhist phrase “lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu,” or, “may all beings be happy and free.” All are invited to enjoy a transformative art experience, connect through the wheel and the mantra, and radiate positive energy out into the world. Tightly Bound: The Story of Dutch Wax Textiles Dutch wax textiles are a recognizable and distinct element of African culture and identity, but their origins are found in 19 th century Dutch Colonialism and the Industrial Revolution. With breathtaking versatility, Benjamin Percy wraps action, adventure, danger, and darkness within compelling narratives in his novels The Dark Net, The Dead Lands, Red Moon, and The Wilding, several of which are being developed for film/TV, as well as in his acclaimed story collection Refresh, Refresh. Beatty is the author of Tuff, The White Boy Shuffle, Slumberland and two books of poetry as well as the editor of Hokum: An Anthology of African American Humor. His 2015 novel The Sellout made him the first American to win the Man Booker Prize in Fiction and earned the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction. The Sellout tells the story of a modern-day farmer who reinstates slavery in a scathing satire brimming with Beatty’s outrageous humor and rumbling across his self-proclaimed “Richter scale of racism.” The author, who set out to see if he could make himself flinch, certainly brings the reader to face to face with race, popular culture, racism, and language in America. “It is,” he says, “about embracing the profoundly profane, the absurd…because the stuff that’s most inappropriate is oftentimes the most necessary and the most beautiful.” Sat, Sep 22 | 2pm | Louis Stokes Wing Auditorium

José Antonio Vargas

In 2011, Vargas revealed his life as an undocumented immigrant in an essay published in The New York Times Magazine, and he appeared a year later with other undocumented immigrants on the cover of Time Magazine in connection with a follow-up cover story that he wrote. As the political climate continues to fuel the storms around those in the U.S. without documentation, Vargas sparks conversation about both sides of this contentious issue. He produced and directed the feature film Documented as well as the MTV television special White People, which explored what it means to be young and white in an America of changing demographics. He is the founder and CEO of Define American, the nonprofit organization that uses the power of story to transcend politics and shift the conversation about immigrants, identity, and citizenship in a changing America. His memoir, Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen (September 2018), promises to advance both his personal story and the larger conversation about American identity. Susan Orlean

The author of Saturday Night, The Bullfighter Checks Her Makeup, Rin Tin Tin: the Life and the Legend, and The Orchid Thief (which became an Academy Award-winning film), describes her Cleveland childhood as “happy and uneventful…back when the Indians were still a lousy team.” Studying literature and history, she dreamt of writing long stories about interesting things, but had no idea how to become a writer. There was no guidebook. So, she set off on a path to law school and a career, landing by chance in an interim gig at a now-defunct magazine, then a weekly alternative paper, and, eventually, Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and The Boston Globe, before moving to New York, publishing her first book, and becoming a staff writer for The New Yorker. Her experience is, perhaps, the best proof of the truism: to be a writer, one must write. Orlean’s newest title, The Library Book (October 2018), reopens the unsolved mystery of America’s most catastrophic library fire, underscoring and exploring the treasured place that libraries hold in our culture and in our hearts. Branch Revitalization Project Cleveland Public Library’s branch revitalization project moves forward with important repairs scheduled at ten branch libraries.

s Cleveland Public Library approaches its 150th anniversary, the majority of its branches are slated to be revitalized to best serve Cleveland communities well into the future. During one phase of this capital project, ten branch libraries will undergo critical repair work in 2018 to ensure they can continue to function as safe, inclusive, and sustainable environments. Affected branches will temporarily close on a rolling basis as repairs are made. Construction will be completed in five rounds, with each round of repairs including one east side and one west side branch to minimize inconvenience throughout the greater Library system. Patrons will be redirected to nearby branches while repair work is completed. Lorain and Glenville made up the first round of branch libraries to undergo repairs. Both branches closed temporarily in February and reopened on schedule in mid-April. Lorain Branch received ADA accessibility updates, reading area lighting improvements,

HVAC updates, and electrical circuitry and control updates. Glenville Branch, meanwhile, received ADA accessibility updates, window and wall repairs, roof replacement, parking lot repairs, HVAC upgrades, and electrical circuitry and control updates. Following the completion of repair work, each branch hosted a community party with refreshments and entertainment to celebrate reopening and to thank patrons for their patience during this process. The second wave of branches undergoing maintenance work included Harvard-Lee and Jefferson. These branches temporarily closed in mid-April and are scheduled to reopen in mid to late June. Additional branches scheduled for repairs throughout the remainder of 2018 include Addison, Carnegie West, Collinwood, Fulton, Langston Hughes, Rockport, and South. CLEVELAND’S LITERARY RENAISSANCE

A partnership between Literary Cleveland and Cleveland Public Library opened a world of opportunities for local writers.

n 2015, when writer Lee Chilcote proposed creating a free, daylong writing conference to help aspiring Cleveland-area writers learn, network, and find inspiration, he couldn’t know just how much this idea would transform the city’s literary landscape. After partnering with Cleveland Public Library to host the first Inkubator writing conference in August 2015, Chilcote went on to co-found Literary Cleveland, a nonprofit organization that has grown to offer an impressive range of literary events throughout the region. “About 300 people showed up to the first Inkubator, which doubled our expectations and showed there was a need for this type of resource in Cleveland,” Chilcote says. “We couldn't have done it without the Library.” The 2015 Inkubator was held in Cleveland Public Library’s Literature Department, an apt setting for a gathering of writers eager to put pen to paper. The Inkubator has since become an annual event and the capstone of Literary Cleveland’s offerings. In 2017, Inkubator events spanned a week at locations throughout the city, and the Library continues to host the daylong conference. Now held in the newly renovated Learning Commons in the Louis Stokes Wing downtown, this conference offers hundreds of attendees a range of workshops, readings, and literary discussions. Amy Brown, a freelance writer and editor who serves on Literary Cleveland’s board, attended her first Inkubator conference last year. She praised the event’s use of unique Library spaces—including the Louis 12 UpNext Spring 2018

Stokes Auditorium, the Learning Commons, and the Eastman Reading Garden—as well as the fact that the conference is free and inclusive. “I loved that the Inkubator is open to all ages and writers of all interests, and that the workshops are practical and offer tangible tips and advice,” Brown says. “Most of all, there’s no barrier to entry, either for Literary Cleveland or the Library.” Beyond the Inkubator, Literary Cleveland’s ambitious, year-round programming allows writers to enjoy a host of literary events. From panel discussions in local bars, networking mixers in jazz clubs, writing workshops in independent bookstores and more, Cleveland-area writers have plenty of chances to connect, learn, and improve their craft. Literary Cleveland’s ongoing partnership with the Library, meanwhile, adds a new dimension to its offerings. According to Chilcote, this partnership allows Literary Cleveland to offer free programs, attract a diverse attendee base, and serve more beginning and emerging writers, all of which is part of Literary Cleveland’s mission. “From the start, Library staff were immediately receptive to the idea [of the Inkubator] and willing to take a risk on a new entity that had promise, energy, and enthusiasm,” Chilcote says. “When I’ve asked the Library for support, the answer always seems to be yes. Provide logistical and financial support for our annual festival for writers and readers? Check. Transform the second floor of the downtown library into a conference hub? Yes. Provide signage, technology support, loading dock parking, you-name-it logistical support on day of event? Yes. Basically, the Library is always there to help community partners implement good ideas.” The 2018 Inkubator lineup kicks off Tuesday, July 31 and concludes with the daylong conference at the Main Library campus on Saturday, August 4. Author Benjamin Percy will provide the conference’s keynote reading.

Mike San Giacomo has been a reporter at the Plain Dealer since 1989. In 1993 he began the first column dedicated to comic books in a major newspaper. He is the author of several comic books and graphic novels, including Tales of the Starlight Drive-In (Image Comics) which was voted the Best Graphic Novel of the Year in the 2009 Comics Buyer's Guide annual fan poll. His other series, Phantom Jack, is the story of a newspaper reporter who can turn invisible. The series has been collected by Atomic Pop Art Entertainment.
