Let SOURCE be your guide to Columbus’ thriving Jewish community

The Central Ohio Jewish community has a long-held tradition of community engagement and tikkun olam that stretches back generations.

Columbus has a proud, thriving Jewish support system where those from different Jewish traditions, generations, hometowns and ethnic backgrounds connect and work together so very well – and for the good of all in the vibrant city.

For the cover of this 2023 SOURCE magazine, we selected a few photos from the many happy moments in the community o er the last year. n the first, Rabbi Areyah Kaltmann of Chabad Columbus puts on a show as Judah the Maccabee to entertain families for Chanukah. Another photo shows Yitzy Yachnes and Rabbi Howard Zack visiting with alpacas at Congregation Torat Emet’s petting oo last ctober. he final hoto sho s students from Columbus Torah Academy waiting for Columbus Blue Jackets players to enter through a tunnel to the ice during the team’s annual Jewish Heritage Night last December at Nationwide Arena.

One theme these photos have in common is they center around children and families in the Jewish community. Children growing up here, like all of us, have experienced a challenging few years amid the COVID-19 pandemic. For the youngest among us s ecifically, im ortant life milestones have been disrupted and altered by the pandemic. Like all of us, children have adapted to this new normal. I feel a sense of joy at seeing them finally able to gather in erson among the Jewish community, and I’m very glad we have the opportunity to showcase such special moments on the cover of this annual guide to living in Jewish Columbus.

And as we continue to move forward from the pandemic and adapt to what each moment requires, I know Jewish olumbus ill continue to ourish. t s no secret that antisemitism and hate are on the rise s ecifically the o ert and loud type coming from people using their platforms to spread hate and harmful stereotypes about Jews and other racial and ethnic groups. While this is extremely troubling to all of us, also kno this community ill continue to fight and condemn antisemitism and all forms of hate. We do so

directly by calling out and dispelling hate when we see it, but also implicitly by continuing to care for one another and thriving together.

How is SOURCE a part of all this? This magazine shares resources and information about the local institutions doing their part and more to make a difference, engage the community in new ways, and offer convenient services with respect to Jewish traditions and values. Quite simply, these institutions are the backbones of this thriving community.

SOURCE functions as a directory to look to when you realize you need something, or perhaps want to give your time, talent or treasure somewhere, but aren’t sure where to start. Part of the reason we publish SOURCE is to help do our part to relay the strong network of support and resources in the Columbus Jewish community.

I encourage you to continue to patronize and give back to these community mainstays, which the Columbus Jewish Publication Company is grateful to partner with, and I thank you for your enduring support of all we do in the local Jewish and secular communities. I know this community will continue to thrive and adapt as our world continues to change, thanks in no small art to the onderful non rofits, organi ations and businesses in Columbus.

And we’re particularly grateful to our friends at JewishColumbus and Schottenstein Stores Corp. Through their ongoing generosity and support, we’re able to offer our Central Ohio households free annual subscriptions to the Columbus Jewish News and SOURCE.

On behalf of all of us at the CJPC, our professional staff and our board of directors, thank you for your continued commitment to the community and doing your part to ensure the health and safety of all of us. May we all go from strength to strength.

JEWISH HOLIDAYS and noteworthy dates

PURIM

Monday, March 6 (begins at sunset)

Tuesday, March 7 (ends at nightfall)

The jolly festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day,” as recorded in the Megillah (book of Esther).

PASSOVER

Wednesday, April 5 (begins at sunset)

Thursday, April 13 (ends at nightfall)

The eight-day festival of Passover is celebrated in the early spring, from the 15th through the 22nd of the Hebrew month of Nissan. It commemorates the emancipation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. By following the rituals of Passover, we have the ability to relive and experience the true freedom that our ancestors gained.

YOM HASHOAH

Monday, April 17 (begins at sunset)

Tuesday, April 18 (ends at nightfall)

Holocaust Remembrance Day

YOM HAZIKARON

Monday, April 24 (begins at sunset)

Tuesday, April 25 (ends at nightfall)

Israel Memorial Day

YOM HA’ATZMAUT

Tuesday, April 25 (begins at sunset)

Wednesday, April 26 (ends at nightfall)

Israel Independence Day – 75th Birthday

The Jewish state will celebrate its monumental 75th anniversary this year. In addition to Israel and around the world, organizations and institutions in Central Ohio will be holding events to celebrate the country’s major milestone. Stay up-to-date with all the Israel @ 75 events near and far at columbusjewishnews.com.

SHAVUOT

Thursday, May 25 (begins at sunset)

Saturday, May 27 (ends at nightfall)

Shavuot coincides with the date that God gave the Torah to the Jewish people at Mount Sinai more than 3,300 years ago. It comes after 49 days of eager counting, as we prepared ourselves for this special day. It is celebrated by lighting candles, staying up all night to learn Torah, hearing the reading of the Ten Commandments in synagogue, feasting on dairy foods and more.

TISHA B’AV

Wednesday, July 26 (begins at sunset)

Thursday, July 27 (ends at nightfall)

The Three Weeks is an annual mourning period that falls in the summer during which we do not cut our hair, purchase new clothes, listen to music or hold weddings. It reaches its climax and concludes with the fast of the ninth of Av, the date when both Holy Temples were set aflame. This is the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, and it is also the date that many other tragedies befell our people. The fast of Tisha b’Av begins at sunset the previous evening. Besides fasting, we abstain from additional pleasures: washing, applying lotions or creams, wearing leather shoes and marital relations. Until midday, we sit on the floor or on low stools.

ROSH HASHANAH

Friday, Sept. 15 (begins at sunset)

Sunday, Sept. 17 (ends at nightfall)

Rosh Hashanah is the birthday of the universe, the day G-d created Adam and Eve, and it’s celebrated as the head of the Jewish year. It’s celebrated with candlelighting in the evenings, festive meals with sweet delicacies during the night and day, prayer services that include the sounding of the ram’s horn (shofar) on both mornings and desisting from creative work.

YOM KIPPUR

Sunday, Sept. 24 (begins at sunset)

Monday, Sept. 25 (ends at nightfall)

Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year – the day on which we are closest to God and to the quintessence of our own souls. It is the Day of Atonement – “For on this day He will forgive you, to purify you, that you be cleansed from all your sins before God” (Leviticus 16:30). For nearly 26 hours – from several minutes before sunset on 9 Tishrei to after nightfall on 10 Tishrei –we “afflict our souls,” or abstain from food and drink, do not wash or anoint our bodies, do not wear leather footwear and abstain from marital relations.

SUKKOT

Friday, Sept. 29 (begins at sunset)

Friday, Oct. 6 (ends at nightfall)

For 40 years, as our ancestors traversed the Sinai Desert, following the Exodus from Egypt, miraculous “clouds of glory” surrounded and hovered over them, shielding them from the dangers and discomforts of the desert. Ever since, we remember God’s kindness and reaffirm our trust in His providence by dwelling in a sukkah – a hut of temporary construction with a roof covering of branches – for the duration of the Sukkot festival (on the Jewish calendar Tishrei 15-21). For seven days and nights, we eat all our meals in the sukkah and otherwise regard it as our home.

SHEMINI ATZERET / SIMCHAT TORAH

Friday, Oct. 6 (begins at sunset)

Sunday, Oct. 8 (ends at nightfall)

The holiday of Sukkot is followed by an independent holiday called Shemini Atzeret. In Israel, this is a one-day holiday; in the Diaspora, it is a two-day holiday, and the second day is known as Simchat Torah. This holiday is characterized by utterly unbridled joy, which surpasses even the joy of Sukkot. The joy reaches its climax on Simchat Torah, when we celebrate the conclusion – and restart – of the annual Torah-reading cycle.

CHANUKAH

Thursday, Dec. 7 (begins at sunset)

Friday, Dec. 15 (ends at nightfall)

Chanukah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. At the heart of the festival is the nightly menorah lighting. The menorah holds nine flames, one of which is the shamash (“attendant”), which is used to kindle the other eight lights. On the first night, we light just one flame. On the second night, an additional flame is lit. By the eighth night of Chanukah, all eight lights are kindled. Special blessings are recited, often to a traditional melody, before the menorah is lit, and traditional songs are sung afterward.
