Ken Waldman & Willi Carlisle: Real Alaska to the Ozarks W

e are so very happy to welcome you back! Please join us for a lawn chair cross-country tour from the 49th state to the Ozark hill country anchored in a unique and beautiful setting. Alaska’s fiddling poet Ken Waldman returns to Lakewood on May 22 with Ozark renaissance folklorist and multi-instrumentalist Willi Carlisle for a soulful evening of music, original poetry and storytelling. Ken, a former college professor with an MFA in Creative Writing, is a timely, published poet whose Appalachian-style fiddle playing provides a rich backdrop for his poems and stories. He’s been a visiting writer at nearly 100 colleges and universities, a visiting artist at over 240 schools in 35 states and has led writing workshops from Alaska to Maine. As a performer, Ken’s played from the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage to Berkeley’s Freight and Salvage, occasionally as a soloist but more often as the leader of one of his ever-changing troupes of nationally recognized musicians. To our delight, Ken brings with him Willi Carlisle, a multifaceted writer, performer and instrumentalist who is, according to The Washington Post, “powerful...both downhome and brainy.” With a style forged in the fire of Ozark old-time music and his ever-growing collection of music and new songs, Willi provides musical stories that hoot, stomp and saunter through joys and troubles uniquely Southern and timelessly true. Equally at home on the banjo, accordion, fiddle, guitar and harmonica (to name a few), Willi has earned accolades for his versatility with performances in the U.K., Canada and across the U.S., appearing with acts such as Dom Flemons, Mary Gauthier, Los Texmaniacs, Carson McHone and more.

Lakewood.org/Bravo

WRITING WORKSHOP WITH KEN Ken will also share his craft in the workshop, “Four Writing Prompts: The Beginning of Four New Stories or Poems,” which will teach creative writers of all levels how to start a new piece, as starting is often the most difficult part about writing. Two workshops will be held at Heritage Lakewood on May 22, at 10 a.m. for adults and at 1:30 p.m. for teens. Each two-hour session is $25 per person. Registration is available at Lakewood.org/LCCPresents.

Together, Ken and Willi offer a roots music string-band variety show that’s fun, inspiring and full of surprises. The Boston Globe says it “…might tempt you to plan a road trip with a journal under one arm and a fiddle under the other.” LCC Presents has more in store for you for the 2021/2022 Season. To purchase tickets for “Ken Waldman & Willi Carlisle,” which start at $27, and for more information about upcoming performances, visit Lakewood.org/LCCPresents or call the box office at 303-987-7845. “Ken Waldman & Willi Carlisle: Real Alaska to the Ozarks” is supported by a grant from WESTAF and the National Endowment for the Arts. Artists and programs subject to change. Public health guidelines will be followed, including capacity limits, distanced seating and mask requirements.

Turning Toward the Light

May 28- August 27, by reservation. Lakewood Cultural Center, North Gallery and Lobby. For INSPIRE 2021, the Lakewood Cultural Center is thrilled to be hosting “Turning Toward the Light,” an exhibition by established artists Patricia Finley, Lydia Riegle, Janet Rundquist and Cyncie Winter. Known for exhibiting their vital work together in a variety of public venues, these artists work in a variety of styles and rich palettes of color and act as catalysts, creating a branching effect where hope is resurrected and can find a true home. Inspired by the words of the National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman, “For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it,” this artist collective came together to present their timely and hopeful abstract paintings. Brought together by the common theme of celebrating the idea that art has tremendous power to uplift, enliven and fill our lives with light, these four abstract artists return to the North Gallery, offering their newest series of paintings, “Turning Toward the Light.” Through their individual and unique voices, these artists add to the conversation of finding “good” and lessening the harshness of a beleaguered world. In this way, they infuse others with inspiration and a sense of belonging to the world.

THE POWER OF PERFORMING ARTS IN THESE CHALLENGING TIMES by Community Events Coordinator Rebecca Gushen In 2020, the world of performing arts spiraled into uncertainty as shows were canceled, music venues went dark and tours came to a halt. Our hearts were aching for beloved mainstays like Hazel Miller and yearning for carefree summer nights at the amphitheater. But as we waited for news from Jefferson County Public Health, we, like many others, turned to social media and were amazed with what we found. With their newly cleared schedules, musicians across the country got creative and went online. In a matter of weeks there was an influx of livestreamed new material and virtual concerts. It was as if the musical community was bursting at the seams, and we, the beneficiaries, found ourselves clinging to our computer screens and smartphones to stay connected to the outside world. We applauded virtual performances by Graham Good, Britta K and Pennies on the Track at Lakewood’s virtual Earth Day Celebration. We tapped our feet to “Man on the Radio,” the 2020 album release by Colorado bluegrass favorite, Wood Belly. We were inspired by the powerhouse vocals of The Broadcast’s Caitlin Krisko from her weekly livestream performances.

“This unwavering determination, creativity and passion is what kept many of us optimistic through the most isolating months of the pandemic.” Photo taken before the pandemic.

TICKETS ON SALE MAY 6 Lakewood.org/SummerConcerts Enjoy the Beer Garden presented by Foothills Credit Union, local snacks and food truck fare. We’re committed to keeping our concertgoers safe! All public health guidelines will be followed.

As last summer wore on we were anxious to bring live music back to the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation Amphitheater in a safe and responsible way. In late July we followed public health guidelines to tweak our procedures and concert model to create the Lakewood Legends series, which showcased some of the most iconic musicians in Colorado. By leveraging our outdoor venue to create a distanced seating structure, residents enjoyed live music in a safe and controlled environment. Time-honored favorites like Chris Daniels & The Kings and Hazel Miller & The Collective treated our audiences to intimate performances that brought the joy of live music back into our lives. The positive feedback received from both our community and performers following Lakewood Legends encouraged us to bring back our Sounds Exciting! Summer Concert Series in 2021. We are excited to use the many lessons learned in 2020 to ensure your safety and enjoyment this summer. We will be featuring some of the acts who missed their chance at the spotlight last year along with a few new faces we know you’ll love. We are committed to delivering amazing musical performances and are proudly prepared to tackle any challenges. Join us this summer on Thursday nights at the amphitheater for a summer concert series to celebrate brighter days!

ALL IN THE FAMILY The Dean family members, mom Meryt and siblings Elisa (21), Anthony (18), Mariah (16), Thomas (15), Lucy (9) and Annemarie (6) have been regulars in the MCT residency for years. Meryt is, for all practical purposes, the resident accompanist, playing piano for rehearsals and performances, and the siblings have had various roles in productions from ensemble to main character to assistant director. In discussion with Cultural Center Administrator Rita Sommers, they offered some reflections on their experiences with MCT.

MISSOULA CHILDREN’S THEATRE IS ON! Register at Lakewood.org/MCT. Our annual residency with Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) moves to summertime with a production of “Johnny Appleseed” August 9-14. Rehearsals will take place throughout the week from 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., with two performances on Saturday afternoon, August 14. Local kids in grades K-12 interested in participating can simply register for the residency week; no advance preparation or experience is required. The directors will get to know the participants, assign roles and designate several assistant directors on the first day. “Johnny Appleseed” explores the fascinating history of John Chapman, who was gently determined to make friends with all creatures and to plant apple trees throughout the Ohio River Valley. In MCT’s version, his travels with his faithful Apple Seed buddies yield happy songs, unexpected friendships and endless orchards of juicy, crispy apples to nourish tummies across the land. The tale of Johnny Appleseed is a sweet reminder that kindness is at the core of a happy life. Registration opens May 6 for this week of creative fun and discovery. Enrollment will be limited, and COVID protocols will be in place. The cost is $165, and scholarship support is available for qualifying households. Learn more and register at Lakewood.org/MCT or call 303-987-7845.

Rita Sommers: Meryt, you’ve been the accompanist for the MCT residency at the Lakewood Cultural Center for a number of years. What brings you back each year? Meryt: I enjoy getting to know the kids and seeing the show come together in just one week! It’s fun to be part of that process. RS: As a parent, what do you value most about the MCT experience? Meryt: I appreciate that my kids, who participate in a lot of music and athletics, have the opportunity to have an awesome theater experience in just one week, without having to choose between the two and their other activities. RS: What has been your favorite role or production and why? Elisa: Mock Turtle in “Alice in Wonderland.” I loved the directors and the show was hysterical! Anthony: The Giant in “Jack in the Beanstalk” because I got to hang out with the “big” people and have a microphone. Lucy: Penguin in “Aladdin.” I loved the little purple bowtie in my costume and I had a line. RS: What’s your favorite thing about participating in an MCT production? Mariah: Getting to meet new people and make new friends. Anthony: Getting to do a show with my siblings. Annemarie: Practicing the Chameleons’ hula dance in “Robinson Crusoe.” RS: Do you have any advice for kids who might be thinking about signing up for “Johnny Appleseed” but feel a little unsure? Annemarie: Don’t be afraid because it’s really fun! Thomas: It’s a really fun experience and easier than you think. Elisa: It’s so worth it, and everybody can do it. Just go for it!
