STUDENTS DISSOLVING BARRIERS One of only four teachers in Colorado certified to teach the ground-breaking, inclusive dance program DanceAbility, Kathryn Dudley is now teaching at Lakewood Cultural Center. DanceAbility is a unique dance method that uses improvisational dance to promote artistic expression and exploration between people with and without disabilities. The mission of this method is to dissolve barriers and connect people with and without disabilities through dance and movement. "I believe that DanceAbility® goes beyond movement exploration and creates an opportunity for people to define themselves in their own terms and

see that this dance form, like their lives, has many options and possibilities," said Executive Director Susan Sygall of Mobility International, U.S.A. DanceAbility cultivates a common ground for creative expression of all people. The method supports self-empowerment by offering ways that all individuals can participate fully in expressing their creative choices, including respecting one’s own limits. Through dance and movement, people from diverse backgrounds experience the art of being together, erasing prejudices and misconceptions about diversity in the field of dance, and by extension, society. Multiple sessions of this inspiring class are offered at the Lakewood Cultural Center. Follow the QR code above to learn more about DanceAbility and other LCC programming.

LAKEWOOD CULTURAL & CIVIC CENTERS | EXHIBITIONS

INSPIRING INCLUSIVITY Lakewood Cultural & Civic Centers Inspiring an inclusive appreciation of art through exhibitions that range in content from thought-provoking contemporary works to traditional methodologies is the intention driving the artwork selection in the Lakewood art galleries. This winter and spring, exhibitions in the North, Corner, Richey and Mezzanine Galleries offer a diverse array of visual delights across the fine and visual arts. In the North Gallery from late January through March, viewers can explore the group exhibition “Scales,” which investigates the role size plays in the understanding of an artwork. From the tiniest, most intimately sized sculptures to paintings that loom impossibly large, viewers will journey across a crescendo of visual scales within the gallery. The Corner Gallery will feature the group photography show, “Wildlife of Lakewood,” for its third annual juried exhibition, which celebrates the incredible diversity of fauna within our very

own city. This show welcomes submissions from the community, filling the gallery walls with a menagerie of wildlife photography from March 1 to 31. In April, crowd favorites, the “Jeffco Middle Schools Art Show” and “The Fletcher Miller and Sobesky Schools’ Show” take over the LCC galleries with youthful energy. While the kids are celebrated in the Cultural Center Galleries, the Richey Gallery hosts a show of works by Jeffco teachers, featuring the incredible talent of the educators who inspire students across the school district.

This year, ahead of the Jeffco Middle School exhibitions, the Mezzanine Gallery will present an exhibition of the thesis body of artworks by more than 20 students in the Jeffco International Baccalaureate (IB) arts programs.

There is truly something for everyone within our galleries! To find out more about LCC galleries and exhibitions, including dates and public receptions, visit Lakewood.org/Exhibitions.

PROGRAMS | WASHINGTON HEIGHTS ART CENTER

IN THE LIMELIGHT Washington Heights Arts Center Fiber art is enjoying a moment in the art world spotlight. According to the New York Times, “Fiber Art is… being taken seriously. Long caught in the liminal space between craft and something more prestigious, works of thread and fabric are reaching newfound institutional recognition.” What is Fiber Art? We are so glad you asked. Have you ever wanted to try printing your own unique design on fabric? How about the art of bookmaking?

Does the idea of rug tufting with an exciting and powerful tufting machine thrill you? What about weaving your own scarf for those late spring snowstorms?

Fiber Art refers to fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber, and other components, such as fabric, paper, yarn, woven plastics, thread, and more. It is a medium that highlights the materials and the manual labor on the part of the artist/maker, and we can get you started during classes at Washington Heights Arts Center. Really, the only question is, how will you weave your own creativity into this beautiful and varied medium of Fiber Arts?

LCC PRESENTS FEATURED ARTIST | LAKEWOOD CULTURAL CENTER

A BALANCE OF BEAUTY AND CRAFT Few instruments have the sheer weight of history behind them that organs do. Their roots can be traced back to ancient Greece, but what really makes the instrument unique, according to world-renowned organist Cameron Carpenter, is the power it has over time. “It’s the instrument that I found most interesting because of its scale,” he explained. “It is the organ’s aspect of time that is different in operation from other instruments. A note that is held will continue to sound as long as it’s held.” The organ’s ability to be both secular and religious, ancient and startlingly modern, makes it the perfect instrument for a musician as dedicated and experimental as Carpenter. Lakewood audiences will be firsthand what able to hear firsthand Carpenter can do with an organ at his performance at the Lakewood Cultural Center on Friday, February 2.

For his Lakewood performance, Carpenter will be drawing from the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, figure whose compositions a figure have played a critical role in Carpenter’s own musical first became evolution. He first familiar with Bach playing the “Well-Tempered Clavier” as a child. The Lakewood concert will include “The Goldberg Variations,” one of the ultimate keyboard challenges. “For me, Bach is like Occam or one of those old scientists defined the boundaries of who defined the known world. The music has been a major relationship for me, for better and for worse,” Carpenter said. “It’s an intensely serious and introspective program.” In the music world, Carpenter describes the organ as a bit antisocial, something that he sees as a strength. Its massive range allows it to take up so much musical space, and that’s why audiences typically see it as either an instrument for solos or in the background of larger classical works. This makes it a challenge for both the performer and the listener, but one that is very rewarding to all involved. What audiences take away from the performance will be an appreciation of both beauty and mastery of a craft. find it’s best “The organ is a world unto itself, and I find to accept and appreciate that for what it is. It is like visiting an austere museum by yourself to take in a very severe collection of 18th-century engravings,” Carpenter said. “A single performance of a given work will mean different things to everyone who hears it.”

Extravagantly talented...the audience's response was raucous...everything he touches turns fantastical and memorable. — THE NEW YORK TIMES A graduate of New York’s famous Julliard School, Carpenter has spent nearly two decades mesmerizing audiences with his uniquely contemporary style of playing such a traditional instrument. Audience members whose familiarity with the range of an organ from hearing it used in church services will be radically surprised by what Carpenter can do with it. “Carpenter is one of the world’s most visible organists, and we’re thrilled to have him in Lakewood this season,” said Rita Sommers, Cultural Center administrator. “This is going to be a performance unlike anything our audiences have heard before.”

LITTLE GNOME FACTS Gnomes are known in folklore to protect spring gardens and ensure a bountiful harvest. The image of the gnome was based on classic Dutch and Swedish book characters and then updated with the popularity of the dwarfs in Disney’s Snow White. Today, gnomes are a topic of debate with people who seem to have a clear passion or a strong aversion toward these eccentric characters with impressive facial hair. If gnome is where your heart is, use the guide below to create a character that reflects your own creativity.

HOW TO CREATE YOUR GNOME 1. Cut a long rectangle that will fully cover your jar, both height and circumference, and hot glue to attach. 2. Cut the piece of fabric that will become your pointed gnome hat using a pattern. Make sure that the hat will fit over the top of your jar when rolled into a cone shape. Place hot glue down one of the straight edges and roll the other straight edge to meet it so it forms a cone shape. 3. Glue the hat to the top of your jar. 4. Form a beard by cutting small pieces of yarn about the same length and carefully gluing them to the jar at the base of the hat brim. You can even out the ends of the yarn with scissors once they are glued down. You may want to brush out the yarn slightly to give it a fluffier look! 5. For the nose, glue a wooden bead right at the base of your hat brim, on top of your yarn beard. 6. Personalize your gnome: Decorate the hat with any bits and bobs you have at home; cut out some felt shoes, and add some arms with extra fabric—get creative!
