FALL 2021 PERFORMANCES

WINTER & SPRING 2022 PERFORMANCES

The Drowsy Chaperone co-presented with Performance Now Theatre Company Fridays-Sundays, September 10-26

ETHEL’s Documerica 7:30 p.m., Thursday, February 17

When a die-hard musical theater fan puts on a recording of his favorite Jazz Age musical comedy, an extravagant fantasy unfolds in his living room. A Broadway starlet and her debonair fiancé, bumbling gangsters, a misguided lover and an intoxicated chaperone create an evening of madcap delight. Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado 7:30 p.m., Saturday, November 13 The Rocky Mountain region’s only professional period instrument orchestra presents “Cross-Currents” weaving together melodies in Baroque style from Latin America and Europe. New discoveries in Baroque music and traditional favorites promise to be an unexpected and entertaining evening.   Timothy P. & The Rocky Mountain Stocking Stuffers 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Saturday, December 4 2 p.m., Sunday, December 5 Some of Colorado’s finest Western, bluegrass and folk musicians play entertaining arrangements of seasonal favorites and original music. A toe-tapping holiday tradition!

Exploding the boundaries of conventional quartet music, ETHEL’s multimedia performance melds evocative imagery from the Environmental Protection Agency photo archive with original music for a meditation on America’s relationship to our land, our resources and ourselves. TAKE3 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 4 This crossover trio of violin, piano and cello, led by star violinist Lindsay Deutsch, is genre-defying with a flair for the unexpected. With chops honed at the world’s top conservatories, these artists take audiences from Beethoven to Bieber with rock-star charisma for a performance that is infectious and down to earth. The Lao Tizer Quartet featuring Nelson Rangell 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 12 This quartet delivers an explosive mix of jazz, rock, classical, funk and world rhythms. Led by keyboardist/composer and Boulder native Lao Tizer, the band features saxophonist/flutist extraordinaire Nelson Rangell, drum phenom Gene Coye and bass legend Ric Fierabracci. 1776 co-presented with Performance Now Theatre Company Fridays-Sundays, March 18-April 3 Witness the birth of a nation as our forefathers struggle to craft the Declaration of Independence. The seminal event in American history blazes to vivid life in this most beautiful and unconventional Broadway hit. The Small Glories 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 19

YOUTH & FAMILY The Emperor’s New Clothes co-presented with Missoula Children’s Theatre Monday-Saturday, January 24-29 Trouble ensues in the kingdom when the Emperor takes “dress for success” (and the importance of other people’s opinions) to the extreme. His true friends create an elaborate “birthday suit” for the Emperor to wear for his birthday parade, and he quickly and humbly learns that sometimes less is more. Visit Lakewood.org/MCT for residency and casting details. 8 BRAVO Magazine Lakewood

Wailin’ Jennys alum Cara Luft and JD Edwards create a roots powerhouse duo that delivers soaring, interwoven vocals with stomping clawhammer banjo, guitar and harmonica. This musical tour-de-force reflects life on the Canadian Prairie in songs of love, loss and environmental struggles. Artists and programs subject to change.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Have you missed the theater? The Lakewood Cultural Center is excited to be open once again, and we are looking for performance assistant volunteers to help with front-of-house operations including ushering, ticket taking, will call and greeting positions. Performance assistants play an integral part in theater operations. They also create a positive, welcoming experience by providing exemplary customer service for our patrons. Chances are if you’ve attended a performance at the LCC, you’ve been helped by one of our amazing volunteers. As a performance assistant, you will be part of a fun team of volunteers who take a lot of pride in their role at the LCC. Each week you can expect something new and exciting on the stage. From dance to contemporary and classical music to theatrical productions performed by local arts organizations as well as international and national touring artists, there’s always something to look forward to. If you’re looking for ways to get involved in your community and support the arts, consider becoming a performance assistant. Most performance assistants work one to three shifts per month. Orientation and training for new volunteers is scheduled throughout the year. If you’re interested in joining this dynamic team, please contact Lakewood Heritage, Culture & the Arts Volunteer Coordinator Nell Nelson at 303-987-7868 or NelNel@Lakewood.org for more information.

GRAND OPENING Caretaker’s Cottage Open House 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, September 11 Where can you find a place to learn about and research local Lakewood history, attend a fun class or rent a historic space for a meeting or wedding? How about the Caretaker’s Cottage at Heritage Lakewood Belmar Park!

$10 fee. Activity #37F6203. Register at Lakewood.org/Heritage or call 303-987-7850.

The Caretaker’s Cottage was built over 100 years ago, ordered in pieces from a catalog. May Bonfils Stanton — the daughter of a Denver newspaper owner —purchased the land in the 1930s to accommodate her mansion and 750-acre farm, which was looked after in part by a caretaker who lived in the cottage.

CARETAKER’S COTTAGE RESEARCH ROOM Open free to the public 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Tuesdays. For additional information or to request a reservation, visit Lakewood.org/Collection.

The mansion was torn down in 1971, but the City of Lakewood purchased the land in 1973 for use as open space and, along with the Lakewood Historical Society, preserved several original farm buildings as part of the museum. Historic preservation involves saving, fixing and protecting significant buildings, objects and landscapes. Unique places like the Caretaker’s Cottage can connect people to their past and each other, help them explore diverse experiences that may be missing from mainstream storylines and build a stronger community.

Caretaker’s Cottage images: (Top) Artwork by Dick Gallagher, Heritage Lakewood volunteer. (Bottom) Circa 1960s, courtesy of caretaker Emmett Hageman.

The Caretaker’s Cottage restoration project was paid for in part by a History Colorado – State Historical Fund grant. The project included a condition assessment, production of construction documents and exterior and interior restoration.

A poetic gift from visiting artist Ken Waldman In May 2021, Alaska’s fiddling poet, Ken Waldman, led writing workshops for adults and teens while he was in residence prior to his LCC Presents performance with Willi Carlisle. One group writing activity involved using the dictionary to strategically, yet randomly, generate a word list. “Each of these words is evocative,” Ken observed. “Take three or four of them, add a few others, and run with it. The hardest part is getting started.” Ken writes a poem for each place he visits. Lakewood was the lucky recipient of two acrostic poems. “A Special Lakewood Poem” is a double acrostic— both the first and last letters of each line spell the same word.

A Lakewood Poem Little did we know how a pandemic could shape us. Kids stuck in their homes every day for weeks asked, When will this be over? We all asked—young, old, those in their prime. Don’t despair. We’re here today. A Special Lakewood Poem Let’s think how really special a place this is. Here’s an idea— keep to lakes, woods, a park. Explore eagles, owls, a whole world of flight. How to know ourselves? It’s knowing how to observe nature. So what to do? Describe what’s local and wild. -Ken Waldman

CELEBRATING ARTS PARTNERS THROUGH VIBRANT FALL EXHIBITIONS Each year, the Lakewood Cultural Center has the opportunity to collaborate with local and regional arts partners for exhibitions that celebrate the artistic talent in our city and state. These partner organizations work to make our cultural community inspiring and vibrant. Two such arts partners are the Lakewood Arts Council (LAC) and the Colorado Watercolor Society, both of which work tirelessly to support the arts and artists in Lakewood and beyond. Now that facilities have reopened – and after LAC’s exciting allvirtual Artists Choice Digital Exhibition last year – we are thrilled to announce the return of the LAC Artists Choice in-person show in the Lakewood Cultural Center’s Mezzanine Gallery this fall. Artists who participate in the LAC exhibition are locally engaged and exceptionally talented artists working across mediums and thematic approaches. This year, the show will be juried by Lakewood resident and rising art star, Collin Parson, who recently completed the Lakewood 50th Anniversary public artwork, “Echoes and Reflections.” The LAC Artists Choice show will be on display from September 3 to December 30, with an opening reception Thursday, September 23, 5-7 p.m.

The Colorado Watercolor Society has partnered with the Lakewood Cultural Center for more than five years to present its juried Annual Members Show, highlighting the most exceptional work of its participating members. This exhibition puts on full display the enormous range, technical variety and artistic application of the watercolor medium. After a year hiatus, it is an honor to welcome back the Colorado Watercolor Society for an exhibition in the North Gallery and the Lakewood Cultural Center Lobby, opening October 11 and running through January 4, 2022. We are so looking forward to welcoming the community to our fall exhibitions. It is great to once again be bringing Lakewood joy by lining our walls with outstanding art by local artists!

ON VIEW THIS FALL AT LAKEWOOD PARKS LandMark Exhibition Now through October 18

Scan for audio guide.

You still have time to explore the celebrated exhibition, LandMark, featuring 10 public artworks in Lakewood parks. LandMark, curated and created by local artists, is on view through October 18. Inspired by the disruption of COVID-19 and resulting insights about our natural world, the artists worked with city staff in Lakewood’s arts and parks divisions to install site-specific sculptures in the spring. Since that time, park visitors have enjoyed discovering the artworks along some of their favorite paths and taking part in events such as artist’s talks, a painted rock scavenger hunt and nature tours led by our Lakewood Parks naturalist. Additional LandMark artworks are on view in the neighboring city of Arvada. “LandMark not only involves collaboration across our city. This is a project that unites communities across city lines,” says Lakewood Arts Programming Curator Laine Godsey. Visit LandMarkExhibit.org to learn more.
