SCHOLARSHIPS

2020 Doodle for Google Contest (K-12)

Calling all K-12 students! It’s time to put your imagination to work, because the 2020 Doodle for Google contest entry period has opened!

The 12th annual Doodle for Google contest is for students in grades K-12, and this year's contest opens January 6, 2020, with entries due by March 13, 2020 (8 pm Pacific Time).

Bring your creativity to life in a doodle of the Google logo. The winning artwork will be featured on the Google homepage, and the grand prize winner will win a $30,000 scholarship and $50,000 in tech funds for their school.

The 2020 Doodle for Google theme is: "I Show Kindness By . . ." Friendship, smiles, thank yous, and hugs. But kindness is so much more than just being nice. This year’s theme invites you to tell Google how you show kindness.

Several finalists also will win some great scholarships and prizes.

Is it by helping around your home? Volunteering in your community’s green space? Maybe it’s comforting someone who’s down, or picking up trash in the park.

You have probably seen some of the cool doodles that grace Google's logo artwork when the Google search box pops up. Sometimes these Google "doodles" are animated; sometimes they even include a kind of mini video game when you click on the Google doodle. Google doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. Put on your creating thinking cap and get out your art supplies, because when you submit your own Google doodle art creation, your Google doodle could earn you a $30,000 college scholarship, and $50,000 for your school's computer lab or a technology program! The winning doodle also will be featured on www.Google.com for a day. So get to work and let the doodling begin!

However you define it, let Google know how you bring a little bit more kindness into the world. Take your ideas and bring them to life in your doodle!

To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/ editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded to a month. Since then, U.S. presidents have proclaimed February as National AfricanAmerican History Month. THE ANIMAL HOSPITAL

February 15, 2020 10 am - 4 pm Alexander Dickson House Hillsborough Visitors Center 150 E. King St. Hillsborough, NC

Every year, The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough puts on a Living History day to help people experience this region’s Revolutionary Era history with a hands-on festival of activities for participants of all ages. The event includes military reenactors, cooking and crafting demonstrations, kid’s activities, games, music, storytelling, and even some dancing. The Living History day has become a tradition in Hillsborough for almost twenty years. Each year, people gather to learn about history and get a first-hand look at one of the most historically significant towns in North Carolina. The Revolutionary War period is a particularly interesting part of the town’s story. Hillsborough was a major North Carolina town back then. William Hooper, one of Hillsborough’s favorite sons, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. British General Cornwallis occupied the town in 1781 to rest his troops and recruit loyalists – after six days, they left with few, if any new soldiers. Hillsborough was also the site of the North Carolina Provincial Congress at the start of the war and hosted the state’s Constitutional Convention of 1788 once the war was over. Revolutionary War Living History Day is free and open to the public. For more information visit https://visithillsboroughnc.com or call 919-732-7741.

Baby It's Cold Outside! Types of Winter Weather with NOAA and the National Weather Service

Precipitation can take a variety of forms, with each one posing its own hazards. Much of the precipitation that falls throughout the year begins as snowflakes high in the clouds. The snowflakes form as air rises, cools and condenses, usually around an area of low pressure. Whether or not precipitation remains snow or turns into sleet, hail, or freezing rain by the time it reaches the ground depends on temperature changes the snowflakes encounter as they travel through the layers of the atmosphere. Here is an overview of different types of precipitation, how they form, and what hazards they can bring.

Types of Winter Precipitation Snow - Most precipitation that forms in

wintertime clouds starts out as snow because the top layer of the storm is usually cold enough to create snowflakes. Precipitation falls as snow when the temperature remains at or below 0 degrees Celsius from the cloud base to the ground.

Snowflakes are collections of ice crystals

that cling to each other as they fall toward the ground. Precipitation continues to fall as snow when the temperature remains at or below 0 degrees Celsius from the cloud base to the ground.

Snow Flurries - Light snow falling for short

durations. No accumulation or light dusting is all that is expected.

Snow Showers - Snow falling at varying intensities for brief periods of time. Some accumulation is possible.

Did you know? Snow crystals all have six sides. Snowflakes are made of snow crystals that are stuck together.

Photo: Gina Berardesco

Snow Squalls - Brief, intense snow showers accompanied by strong, gusty winds. Accumulation may be significant. Snow squalls are best known in the Great Lakes Region. Blowing Snow - Wind-driven snow that reduces visibility and causes significant drifting. Blowing snow may be snow that is falling and/or loose snow on the ground picked up by the wind. Blizzards - Winds over 35mph with snow and blowing snow, reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less for at least 3 hours. Sleet - Sleet falls when snowflakes partially melt as they fall, then refreeze before they reach the ground. Freezing Rain - Freezing rain falls when

snowflakes melt completely before reaching the surface, and refreeze upon contact with anything that is at or below 0 degrees celsius, creating a glaze of ice on the ground, trees, power lines, or other objects.

Types of Winter Storms

A winter storm is a combination of heavy snow, blowing snow and/or dangerous wind chills. A winter storm can be life-threatening.

Blizzards are dangerous winter storms that are a combination of blowing snow and wind resulting in very low visibilities. While heavy snowfalls and severe cold often accompany blizzards, they are not required. Sometimes strong winds pick up snow that has already fallen, creating a ground blizzard. An ice storm is a storm that results in the accumulation of at least .25 of ice on exposed surfaces. They create hazardous driving and walking conditions. Tree branches and powerlines can easily snap under the weight of the ice.

Lake effect storms - As a cold, dry air mass moves over the Great Lakes regions, the air picks up lots of moisture from the Great Lakes. This air, now full of water, dumps the water as snow in areas generally to the south and east of the lakes. (The phrase "lake effect" refers to a body of water's role in providing moisture to air that would otherwise be too dry to support snowfall.)

Snow squalls are brief, intense snow showers accompanied by strong, gusty winds. Accumulation may be significant. Snow squalls occur most often in the Great Lakes region. Source: NOAA https://www.nssl.noaa.gov/ education/svrwx101/winter/types/

A significant accumulation of freezing rain lasting several hours or more is called an ice storm.

BOOK NOOK Snowflake Bentley

By Jacqueline Briggs Martin illus. by Mary Azarian

1999 Caldecott Medal Winner Of all the forms of water the tiny sixpointed crystals of ice called snow are incomparably the most beautiful and varied." Wilson Bentley (1865-1931)

From the time he was a small boy in Vermont, Wilson Bentley saw snowflakes as small miracles. And he determined that one day his camera would capture for others the wonder of the tiny crystal. Bentley's enthusiasm for photographing snowflakes was often misunderstood in his time, but his patience and determination revealed two important truths: no two snowflakes are alike; and each one is startlingly beautiful. His story is gracefully told and brought to life in lovely woodcuts, giving children insight into a soul who had not only a scientist's vision and perseverance but a clear passion for the wonders of nature. Snowflake Bentley won the 1999 Caldecott Medal. The Snowy Day By Ezra Jack Keats

1963 Caldecott Medal Winner

The Snowy Day captures the magic of the first snow of winter, with charming simplicity. The story follows the adventures of a little boy named Peter, in the city on a very snowy day, and paints the pictures of a child's wonder at a new snow-covered world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. Universal in its appeal, the story has become a favorite of millions.

The Story of Snow: The Science of Winter's Wonder By Mark Cassino with Jon Nelson, Ph. D.

This book by a nature photographer and a snow scientist will inspire wonder and curiosity about the marvels of snow. How do snow crystals form? What shapes can they take? Are no two snow crystals alike? Why do snowflakes have six sides? These questions and more are answered inside this exploration of the science of snow, featuring photos of real snow crystals in all their beautiful diversity. With beautiful illustrations, clear and engaging explanations, and close-up photographs of magnified snow crystals, The Story of Snow is perfect for reading on winter days, Snowflake-catching instructions are also included for aspiring young snow scientists! The book includes simple directions for constructing a hand-held snowflake observation stage that will inspire children to take a closer look. The Snowy Day

An Amazon Original film adaptaion of the book by Ezra Jack Keats.

Winner of 2 Daytime Emmy Awards

The Snowy Day (an Amazon Original) is an animated film adaptation of the award-winning 1962 children's picture book of the same name, written and illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats. Amazon's The Snowy Day is narrated by Laurence Fishburne and features the original song "Snowy Day," written and performed by Boyz II Men, who also appear in the story as animated characters, singing and harmonizing while little Peter plays in the snow with his friends.

"Keats's sparse collage illustrations capture the wonder and beauty a snowy day can bring to a small child."—Barnes & Noble

The Snowy Day is available to view with Amazon Prime at www.amazon.com.

"Ezra Jack Keats's classic The Snowy Day, winner of the 1963 Caldecott Medal, pays homage to the wonder and pure pleasure a child experiences when the world is blanketed in snow."—Publisher's Weekly

The Snowy Day is the winner of two Daytime Emmy Awards including Outstanding Pre-School Children’s Animated Program.

America's Top Young Scientists 2019

California 14-Year-Old Kara Fan was named America’s Top Young Scientist 2019 in the Nation’s premier middle school science competition, and received a $25,000 award. Her invention, the Nano-Silver Liquid Bandage, is a first aid liquid bandage using nano-silver technology to reduce the risk of superbug infections caused by antibiotic overuse. Discovery Education and 3M have named 14-year-old Kara Fan from San Diego, CA the winner of the 2019 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. Fan created a first aid liquid bandage using nano-silver technology to reduce the risk of superbug infections caused by antibiotic overuse. The national event encourages students ages fifth to eight grade to invent projects that tackle global issues in areas such as medicine, the environment, and communication technology. The 3M Young Scientist Challenge has paired hundreds of students with worldrenowned scientists, with some going on to meet the President of the United States, give TEDTalks, be featured in Forbes’ “30 Under 30” List, and speak in front of Congress. Kara Fan’s sprayable nano particle liquid bandage project beat out nine other finalists in the competition. “The moment before they called my name, I was really nervous because the other finalists' presentations were really good, and I thought they would win,” Fan told a national media outlet.“When they announced my name, I was really surprised!” Fan developed her enzyme-catalyzed liquid bandage in April 2019, while she was still an 8th grader (in San Diego, CA). She used lemon leaf, a watersoluble polymer, and silver nitrate. Silver nitrate proved to be the key factor in the sprayable liquid, which creates a thin layer to protect the wounded area while killing harmful bacteria. Fan told 3M she hopes to reduce the number of incidents related to drugresistant infections, and encourages others to be aware of the global antibiotics crisis. She told judges she was inspired to start researching antibiotics when her grandmother was diagnosed with a bacterial infection and needed to take antibiotics to clear up the infection.

2020 Finalists This year’s Young Scientist Challenge finalists received a variety of prizes from 3M and Discovery Education. The second, third and fourth place winners each received a $1,000 prize and a one of a kind destination trip. In second place, Caroline Crouchley, an eighth-grader at Garden City Middle School from Garden City, New York, developed a sustainable method of public transportation that eliminates the need for a diesel engine or electric motor in trains. In third place, Jordan Prawira, an eighth-grader at Altamont Elementary School from Mountain House, California, invented a wind turbine inspired by hurricane formation concepts to improve the performance and efficiency of current wind turbines. In fourth place, Camellia Sharma, a seventh-grader at George H. Moody Middle School from Glen Allen, Virginia, developed a water leakage detection system to identify underground water leakage and reduce the estimated 48.6 billion cubic meters of water lost annually through current distribution systems worldwide. The fifth through tenth place winners each received a $1,000 prize and a $500 gift card.
