Dog Etiquette: May I Pet Your Dog?

ANIMAL KINGDOM Dogs are a big part of our lives and we can encounter them in different places and situations. Whether it is our own dog, a friend’s dog, or a dog we see in public, we should all know how to properly meet and interact with them. It is even more important for children so that they can have the fun and loving experiences that makes dogs so special to us.

4. If the dog's owner says it is okay to pet the dog, stand tall and still like a tree and allow the dog to smell you first before you pet him. Avoid reaching out to a dog as he approaches you. Let the dog smell you for a minute before petting him after the owner says it's okay.

Here are some simple steps for children to follow to keep them safe, keep dogs comfortable, and to avoid tense situations.

1. Always ask the owners’ permission to meet their dog.

5. Be calm and gentle. Speak softly or not at all. Pet the dog under their chin rather than over their head. If the dog turns and backs up to you then it is okay to pet them gently on their back. 6. If you are playing fetch with a dog, use a “chuck it” or another throwing stick to avoid putting your face or hands in the dog’s face and possibly get an accidental bite or scratch from play. 7. Practice makes perfect. Even if you have met this dog before or this is your own dog, you should always practice these steps so you get better and better at it.

If the owner is not present then it is best to avoid the dog.

2. You can use the following steps to safely greet and play with your own dog. Call the dog to you rather

8. If a dog has his hair up or is growling or barking at you then you should calmly leave or call for an adult to come and help.

than approaching the dog. You can call your dog's name and offer a treat. If the dog is lying down, walking away from you, or eating, then it is best avoid him for the moment.

Put these steps on the fridge or wall as a reminder. With these guidelines everyone, especially children, can continue to have long lasting, enjoyable memories with our loving companions.

3. Look at the dog’s tail or the floor rather than in his face. Looking a strange dog directly in his eyes could make the dog feel uncomfortable.

FUN OUTDOORS

Visiting Parks & Recreational Areas Safety Guidelines from the CDC

Staying physically active is one of the best ways to keep your mind and body healthy. People can visit parks, trails, and open spaces as a way to relieve stress, get some fresh air, and stay active. While these facilities and areas can offer health benefits, it is important to follow the steps below from the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) to protect against Covid-19.

Families can enjoy spending time outside in the fresh air at local parks and recreational areas while following these CDC safety tips. Here's what you need to know when visiting parks and recreational facilities for outdoor family fun. · Visit parks and recreation areas that are close to your home. (Traveling long distances to visit a park may contribute to the spread of COVID-19).

Blue Ridge Mountains / Photo credit Wiki Commons.

Check with the park or recreation area in advance to prepare safely. For National, State, or local parks, the federal or State and local authorities will decide whether parks and other recreational facilities will open. Check with the park in advance to be sure you know which areas or services are open, such as visitors’ centers, bathroom facilities, and concessions, and bring what you need with you, including hand sanitizer or other supplies to maintain proper hygiene.

Masks should not be worn when engaging in activities where the mask might become wet, like when swimming.

· ֹDon’t visit crowded parks or campgrounds where you cannot stay at least 6 feet away from people you don’t live with.

Adults and older children who can safely use hand sanitizer: Use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol and rub hands together until dry, if soap and water are not readily available.

· Carefully consider use of playgrounds (if open), and help children follow guidelines. · Stay at least 6 feet away from people you don’t live with. · Wash your hands often and don’t share items with people you don’t live with. · Wear a mask as feasible. Masks are most essential in times when social distancing is difficult, including when hiking on trails that may be popular or crowded. Masks should not be placed on:

· Clean hands often! Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

· Stay home if you are sick Do not visit parks if you are sick with, tested positive for COVID-19, or were recently (within 14 days) exposed to COVID-19. If you are sick with or tested positive for COVID-19, were recently exposed (within 14 days) to someone with COVID-19, or just don’t feel well, do not visit public areas including parks or recreational facilities. To learn more about protecting against Covd-19 visit www.cdc.gov. Source: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/daily-life-coping/visitors.html

- Children under age 2 - Anyone who has trouble breathing - Anyone who is unconscious, can’t move, or is otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

What are the Different Types of Full Moons? Sometimes, the Moon may appear to glow red. Other times, the Moon may appear larger than usual in our night sky. The Moon itself is not changing colors or sizes. Its changes in appearance are usually due to its position in relation to the Sun and Earth Read on to learn more!

Blood Moon

One meaning of a "blood moon" is based on its red glow. This blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth lines up between the Moon and the Sun. This hides the Moon from the sunlight.

Above: A blood moon against the night sky in San Jose, California. Credit: NASA Ames Research Center/Brian Day

When this happens, the only light that reaches the Moon's surface is from the edges of the Earth's atmosphere. The air molecules from Earth's atmosphere scatter out most of the blue light. The remaining light reflects onto the Moon's surface with a red glow, making the Moon appear red in the night sky. The name "blood moon" is also sometimes used for a Moon that appears reddish because of dust, smoke or haze in the sky. And it can be one of the full moons of autumn when the leaves are turning red.

Supermoon

A "supermoon" appears to us as a largerthan-usual Moon in our night sky. A supermoon looks larger just because it's a bit closer to Earth. "Supermoon" is actually just a nickname for what astronomers call a perigean full moon – a moon that is full and at its closest point in its orbit around Earth. The Different Types of Full Moons with NASA Spaceplace (cont.)

Blue Moon

When you hear someone say, "Once in a blue moon ‌" you know they are talking about something rare. A blue moon is not blue in color. In fact, a blue moon does not look any different than a regular, monthly full moon. Rather, a blue moon is special because it is the "extra" Moon in a season with four full moons. This usually only happens every two-and-ahalf years. Since the 1940s, the term "blue moon" has also been used for the second full moon in a calendar month. Above: A blue moon seen over Cincinnati on August 12, 2012. Credit: NASA/Bill Ingalls. This usually happens only every two-and-a-half years.

Harvest Moon

The term "harvest moon" refers to the full, bright Moon that occurs closest to the start of autumn. The name dates from the time before electricity, when farmers depended on the Moon's light to harvest their crops late into the night. The Moon's light was particularly important during fall, when harvests are the largest. Right: A 'Harvest Moon' rising over the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

NASA Missions and the Moon

An illustration of NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

In 2009, NASA launched a spacecraft named the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) to study Earth's Moon. NASA sent LRO into space to take high-resolution photos of our Moon. These photos will help NASA scientists map out the Moon's surface. Why is a map of the Moon's surface important? Surface maps can show NASA possible sources of water ice in the Moon's craters. Maps can help identify potential landing sites for future human exploration of the Moon. Source: https://spaceplace.nasa.gov/fullmoons/en/

Ahoy, Matey! Call 811 Before You Dig!

WEBSITE PICKS

August 11 is National 811 Day

August 11 is National 811 Day, and it's a great time to remind everyone that they must call 811 before digging in the ground. A pirate might safely dig for buried treasure on an island surrounded by the ocean, where there are not any underground utility lines, like gas/oil, water, telecommunications/cable/alarm lines, electric power lines, sewer and drain lines. But unlike a pirate digging for treasure on an island at sea, anyone who wants to dig in the ground in the U.S. must first pick up the phone and call 811 (the same number works in all of the United States) to make sure that their digging or excavation project will not hit any utility lines.

To stay safe and to make sure you don't damage any utility lines, before digging in the ground first take these steps:

CALL 811before digging WAIT the required amount of time (three business days in North Carolina) so that the locators can come out and mark the locations of the underground utilities.

Watch the NC 811 Pirate Video online! www.nc811.org/kids.html

RESPECT the marks, and

DIG with care North Carolina 811 (NC811.org) has videos on its website to teach children (and grown-ups) about NC811, and the importance of calling 811 before digging. Parents can find these short, fun educational videos for kids including a fun Pirate Video (images shown on this page) at http://www.nc811. org/kids.html.

Call 811 Before You Dig Stay Safe & Protect Underground Utilities from Damage Since 1978, North Carolina 811 provides North Carolina residents a fast and easy communications link with their local utility providers. Call 811 to give NC 811 information about the place where you plan to dig/excavate (for example, before digging to plant a tree, install a mail box, install a fence, or any project that requires digging.) NC 811 transmits the information to the utilities and then they send out locators to mark the underground lines for FREE. So remember, call 811 or 1-800-632-4949 three working days before y ou plan to dig.

AUGUST 2020 ONLINE Flick Picks Dora and the Lost City of Gold

The Angry Birds Movie 2 Available to watch online (Netflix)

Available to watch online (Amazon Prime)

The Angry Birds are back! Based on the wildly popular video game, in which multicolored birds try to save their eggs from green-colored pigs, the film series brings the comical style characters to life. Red, Chuck, Bomb, and the rest of their feathered friends are surprised when a green pig suggests that they put aside their differences and unite to fight a common threat. Aggressive birds from an island covered in ice are planning to use an elaborate weapon to destroy the fowl and swine way of life.

Dora the Explorer comes to life with actors and live action! Dora and the Lost City of Gold is a live action adaptation and continuation of Nickelodeon's (cartoon) television series, "Dora the Explorer," starring Isabela Moner as Dora. Dora has spent most of her young life exploring the jungle, but nothing could prepare her for her most dangerous adventure yet: high school!

After picking their best and brightest, the birds and pigs come up with a scheme to infiltrate the island, deactivate the device, and return to their respective paradises intact.

Accompanied by a ragtag group of teens and Boots the monkey, Dora embarks on a quest to save her parents while trying to solve the seemingly impossible mystery behind a lost Incan civilization.

HEALTHY SNACK

Watermelon!

Did you know that August is National Watermelon Month? Watermelon is a very healthy snack with lots of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Watermelon has more health-

promoting lycopene than other fresh produce, and it has excellent levels of vitamins A and C and a good level of vitamin B6 and potassium. (Watermelon even has more lycopene than tomatoes!)

Vitamin A found in watermelon is important for optimal eye health and boosts immunity by enhancing the infection-fighting actions of white blood cells called lymphocytes.

Vitamin B6 found in watermelon helps the immune system produce antibodies. Antibodies are needed to fight many diseases. Vitamin B6 helps maintain normal nerve function and form red blood cells. The body uses it to help break down proteins. The more protein you eat, the more vitamin B6 you need. Vitamin C in watermelon can help to bolster the immune system's

defenses against infections and viruses and can protect a body from harmful free radicals that can accelerate aging and conditions such as cataracts.

A two-cup serving of watermelon is also a source of potassium, a mineral necessary for water balance in your body's cells.

Watermelon is a delicious, naturally sweet treat that is also great for your health!
