JULY Man’s First Landing on the Moon 50th Anniversary! The 50th anniversary of man’s first landing on the Moon is July 20, 1969, when two American astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo 11 lunar module Eagle on the Moon, while hundreds of millions of people around the world watched on their televisions. The astronauts brought back rock samples, they took photos, and they left monitoring equipment to help us learn more about the Moon. Read all about it on pages 10 and 11!

The Fourth of July in the United States commemorates America's independence from Britain. On July 4, 1776, a group of Americans signed the Declaration of Independence. Today, Americans celebrate with parades, barbecues, firework displays and by wearing red, white and blue. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Fourth of July celebrations last all day long, beginning early in the morning with a reading of excerpts from the Declaration of Independence on the steps of Independence Hall, and ending with an amazing fireworks display.

Every year on July 14th, people in France celebrate the beginning of the French Revolution, a day known as Bastille Day. On July 14, 1789, French citizens rebelled against the King and stormed into the Bastille Prison to free political prisoners. In France, Bastille Day also is referred to as La Fête Nationale, and is marked with parades, celebrations and fireworks.

Apollo 11 50th Anniversary! Observe the Moon and Beyond… By David Prosper, NASA Night Sky Notes July 2019

July 16, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the launch of the Apollo 11 mission! On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida on a journey of almost a quarter million miles to the Moon, our nearest celestial neighbor, a mission made possible by the tremendous power of the Saturn V rocket – still the most powerful rocket ever launched. Just a few days later, on July 21, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the lunar surface and became the first people in history to walk on another world. The astronauts set up equipment including a solar wind sampler, laser rangefinder, and seismometer and gathered up 22 kilograms (48 pounds) of precious lunar rocks and soil samples. After spending less than a day on the Moon’s surface, they blasted off and returned to the orbiting Columbia Command Module, piloted by Michael Collins. Just a few days later, on July 24, all three astronauts splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean.

You can follow the timeline of the Apollo 11 mission in greater detail at bit.ly/TimelineApollo11 and dig deep into mission history and science on NASA’s Apollo History Site: bit.ly/ApolloNASA. Have you ever wanted to see the flag on the Moon left behind by the Apollo astronauts? While no telescope on Earth is powerful enough to see items left behind at the landing sites, cameras onboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) can! Read more about it below. Also discover how much you can observe with the Flag on the Moon handout at bit.ly/MoonFlag.

Learn more about the Apollo 11 mission below, and at https://www.nasa.gov/ mission_pages/apollo/apollo-11.html. Catch up on all of NASA’s current and future missions at nasa.gov, and visit NASA Space Place at https://spaceplace.nasa.gov for fun interactive games and educational projects.

"Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." With those eight words, astronaut Neil Armstrong let the world know that Apollo 11 had landed safely on the Moon, beginning humankind's first exploration of another world. The landing kept the mission operations crew in suspense as Armstrong maneuvered around large rocky boulders, finally settling down with only tens of seconds of fuel remaining. After Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon, they walked on the Moon, collected soil and rock samples, and set up equipment which was left there to help us learn more about the Moon. Laser Ranging RetroReflector Earth-based telescopes can’t see the equipment left behind at the Apollo 11 landing site, but the cameras onboard NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) can.

A few minutes later Buzz Aldrin descended the When Neil Armstrong took his famous first steps ladder and joined Neil on the surface of the Moon! onto the lunar surface, he kicked around the soil. "Yes, the surface is fine and powdery." Gazing at You can see the remnants of their first steps as the flat horizon, he took in the view. "Isn't that dark regions around the Lunar Module (LM) and something! Magnificent sight out here." in dark tracks that lead to the scientific experiments the astronauts set up on the surface. After collecting a sample of Moon rock and soil, Neil looked around and observed, "it has a stark The Passive Seismic Experiment Package (PSEP) beauty all its own. It's like much of the high desert provided the first lunar seismic data, returning of the United States. It's different, but it's very pretty data for three weeks after the astronauts left, and out here."

Another trail leads toward Little West crater around 50 meters (164 feet) to the east of the Lunar Module (LM). This was an unplanned excursion near the end of the two and a half hours spent on the surface. Armstrong ran over to get a look inside the crater, and this was the farthest either astronaut ventured from the landing site. Compared to Apollo 12 and 14, which allowed for more time on the surface, and Apollo 15, 16, and 17, which had the benefit of a Lunar Roving Vehicle, Armstrong and Aldrin's surface activities were quite restricted. Their tracks cover less area than a typical city block! Not only was the landscape a place of "stark beauty", but also the source of rocks that revealed the Moon's fiery past for the first time.

The samples showed that the Apollo 11 landing site in Mare Tranquillitatis was once the site of volcanic activity, and the flat surface that afforded such an incredible vista was due to broad, thin flows of lava that flooded the region.

All About the TOUR de FRANCE

The Tour de France is one of the most famous bicycle races in the world! In July each year, top cyclists from many different countries compete in this 3-week long Grand Tour bicycle race that takes them on winding hilly roads.

World-Famous Cycling Race Celebrates its 106th Year

The first Tour de France took place in 1903. The Tour de France will take place this year from July 6th to July 28th. The Tour de France covers more than 2,160 miles. Each year the race takes a different route, covering a large geographic in France and in some years also covers several neighboring countries. The 2019 Tour de France will begin in Brussels, Belgium, continuing into France and all the way across France, down to the South of France, through many steep mountain passes, and finally to Paris. Although the Tour de France route changes from year to year, the finish is always in Paris with a spectacular sprint down the Champs-Élysées and past the Arc de Triomphe - an appropriate triumphant finishing place! Huge crowds of people line the course to cheer on the cyclists. It is expected that around 15 million spectators will line the route of this year's Tour.

2010 Tour de France, Champs-Élysées, Wikimedia Commons

Each day of the race is known as a ‘Stage’, and stages can last up to six hours. At the end of each day the rider who crosses the finish line first is the ‘Stage Winner’ and gets to go up onto the podium.

2019 Tour de France Map, Wikimedia Commons

In total, there are 21 stages over the 23 days, so the riders only get two rest days over the whole race! The lead rider gets to wear the yellow jersey. Cyclists in the Tour de France race in teams, sponsored by companies/ organizations who help to pay the teams' expenses to participate in the race (for example, the expense of the teams' travel, clothing/gear, bicycles, vehicles, hotels, coaches). In 2018, Geraint Thomas of Great Britain won the Tour de France. Who will win this year? Tune in to the Tour de France on July 28th to watch the final sprint in Paris !

July 2019

Tour de France Fun Facts Tour de France Winners' Jerseys The Stage Winner is not the only rider who gets to go on the podium each day. There are other winners too, with each getting to wear a special color cycling shirt known as a ‘jersey.’ The jerseys are made of a special material that keeps the rider cool.

The Tour de France is a Grand Tour race, one of the world's longest bicycle race that takes place over 23 days and covers over 2,100 miles. Each year the race takes a different route, but the finish is always in Paris with the final sprint down the Champs-Élysées. The first ever Tour de France took place in 1903. The 100th Tour de France didn’t take place 100 years after the first race. This is because the Tour de France was canceled during World War I and World War II. The 100th Tour de France did not take place until 2013. Some stages of the race are flat and fast, and others are mountainous. Hundreds of thousands of people line the route of the race each day, and some people camp for up to a week to be sure to get a good view. With all of the crowds and excitement, the atmosphere is often festive, like a parade.

Yellow Jersey Each day, the cyclist with the fastest overall time from the very start of the first day of the race, gets to wear the prestigious yellow jersey.

Some of the people whose homes, businesses or farms are along the Tour de France route decorate their buildings and homes, and paint the roads and display yellow bikes on the side of the road. Some farmers have even painted their sheep, or ploughed bicycle shapes into their crops!

Each team has a "team car" in which their coach, doctor, and bicycle mechanic ride in. The team car is the team's mobile base on the road from which the team's coach directs the team's strategy, and the team's mechanic and doctor look after the riders. Each team also has a team leader. The team leader is the team's best rider, for whom the rest of the team is working to achieve a goal like the overall victory, or the points jersey. The Stage Winner is not the only rider who gets to go on the podium each day. There are other winners too, with each getting to wear a special colored cycling jersey (shirt): a yellow jersey, a green jersey, a white jersey and a red and white polka-dotted jersey. (Read about the meaning of the different colors of the winners' jerseys at left). The overall race leader gets to wear the yellow jersey. The overall winner of the Tour de France is the rider with the quickest time for all the stages put together.

Upon crossing the finish line of each stage, each cyclist's time is recorded. At the end of each day, the stage times from the start of the race are added up for each cyclist. The cyclist with the fastest overall time from the start is awarded the yellow jersey to wear on the next stage. The overall winner of the Tour de France is the rider with the fastest time for all the stages put together.

Green Jersey "Sprinter's Jersey" The green jersey is worn by the best sprinter and time trialist.

The best climber, or the "King of the Mountains" wears the red and white polkadot jersey. The King of the Mountains is the rider who has the most points from the mountain stages. The steeper the mountain, the more points a rider can get.
