All About National Fire Prevention Week with Sparky the Fire Dog and Simon

"Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” The 2018 Fire Prevention Week campaign aims to educate people about three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire –– and how to escape safely in the event of a fire.

LOOK Look for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

LISTEN Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.

LEARN Learn two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter. Also, Sparky the Fire Dog® has a new friend, Simon, who is helping teach this year’s Fire Prevention Week messages. He’s a smart, resourceful character who will join Sparky in spreading fire-safety messages to adults and children alike.

About Fire Prevention Week Since 1922, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in our country. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires. Fire Prevention Week is observed each year in October, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. This horrific conflagration killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures, and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.

Parents & Teachers: Visit www.nfpa.org/Public-

Education/ to find engaging educational resources (apps, videos, printables, and more) to make sure that every child knows what to do in case of a fire. The NFPA's website for kids, sparky.org offers fun interactive games and activities that help children learn about fire safety.

Help children learn about fire safety with the free eBook from NFPA, Rescue Dogs, Firefighting Heroes, and Science Facts. Written by New

The Importance of Fire Prevention In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire.

York Times bestselling authors, this free eBook is ideal for reinforcing fire-safety messages with students while building critical skills in reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, and more.

Learn some helpful tips for getting your room from a disorganized disaster to a lovable living space! from Kid Scoop News!

One big messy room is really a lot of little messes to clean up. One day, clean one bookshelf, the next day a drawer. Selecting one little mess a day until the entire room is picked up makes the chore a little less scary.

Use Muerto’s code to reveal the secret way to make your room look MUCH cleaner instantly!

Put small things into small containers and large things into large containers. That way small things don’t get lost in the bottom of a box with lots of large objects.

Select one part of your room to clean up. Then sort the things in that part of the room into three piles: You need space to store stuff. If a lot of stuff is lying around on the floor and pouring out of your drawers, make space by storing things you aren’t using right now. First, sort through your clothing and toys to get rid of anything you no longer use. Donate those items to a thrift center so they can be reused!

Observe the Moon

By Jane Houston Jones and Jessica Stoller-Conrad This year’s International Observe the Moon Night is on Oct. 20. Look for astronomy clubs and science centers in the local area inviting you to view the Moon at their star parties that evening!

Celebrate International Observe the Moon Night with Morehead Planetarium on October 20th at Honeysuckle Tea House

Join Morehead Planetarium at Honeysuckle Tea House on October 20th to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night with skywatching from 7-9pm! Located at 8871 Pickards Meadow Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27516 Visit moreheadplanetarium.org for details. On Oct. 20, the 11-day-old waxing gibbous Moon will rise in the late afternoon and set before dawn. Sunlight will reveal most of the lunar surface and the Moon will be visible all night long. You can observe the Moon’s features whether you’re observing with the unaided eye, through binoculars or through a telescope.

Here are a few of the Moon’s features you might spot on the evening of October 20: Sinus Iridum—Latin for “Bay of Rainbows”—is the little half circle visible on the western side of the Moon near the lunar terminator—the line between light and dark. Another feature, the Jura Mountains, ring the Moon’s western edge. You can see them catch the morning Sun.

This image of the Moon shows some of the features you might see if you closely observe the Moon. The stars represent the six Apollo landing sites on the Moon. Credit: NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University (modified by NASA/JPL-Caltech)

Just south of the Sinus Iridum you can see a large, flat plain called the Mare Imbrium. This feature is called a mare—Latin for “sea”—because early astronomers mistook it for a sea on Moon’s surface. Because the Moon will be approaching full, the large craters Copernicus and Tycho will also take center stage. Copernicus is 58 miles (93 kilometers) across. Although its impact crater rays—seen as lines leading out from the crater—will be much more visible at Full Moon, you will still be able to see them on October 20. Tycho, on the other hand, lies in a field of craters near the southern edge of the visible surface of the Moon. At 53 miles (85 kilometers) across, it’s a little smaller than Copernicus. However, its massive ray system spans more than 932 miles (1500 kilometers)! And if you’re very observant on the 20th, you’ll be able to check off all six of the Apollo lunar landing site locations, too! In addition to the Moon, we’ll be able to observe two meteor showers this month: the Orionids and the Southern Taurids. Although both will have low rates of meteors, they’ll be visible in the same part of the sky. The Orionids peak on Oct. 21, but they are active from Oct. 16 to Oct. 30. Start looking at about 10 p.m. and you can continue to look until 5 a.m. With the bright moonlight you may see only five to 10 swift and faint Orionids per hour. If you see a slow, bright meteor, that’s from the Taurid meteor shower. The Taurids radiate from the nearby constellation Taurus, the Bull. Taurids are active from Sept. 10 through Nov. 20, so you may see both a slow Taurid and a fast Orionid piercing your sky this month. You’ll be lucky to see five Taurids per hour on the peak night of Oct. 10. You can also still catch the great lineup of bright planets in October, with Jupiter, Saturn and Mars lining up with the Moon again this month. And early

birds can even catch Venus just before dawn!

You can find out more about International Observe the Moon Night at https://moon.nasa.gov/observe.

OCTOBER 2018 Flick Picks Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

(In Theaters: October 12, 2018)

Halloween comes to life in a brand-new comedy adventure based on R.L. Stine’s 400-million-selling series of books, in this sequel to the popular Goosebumps movie. Jack Black returns as a fictional version of author R.L. Stine, who in the film series must write down all the zany monsters and spooky creatures that he imagines for the Goosebumps books and keep them locked away in his original manuscripts, lest they escape to wreak havoc on the real-world. In this sequel, best friends Sonny and Sam go out collecting junk one day, when they meet Slappy, a mischievous talking dummy from an unpublished "Goosebumps" book. Things take a predictably bad turn as Slappy kidnaps Sonny's mother and brings all of his ghoulish friends back to life -- just in time for Halloween. As the sleepy town becomes overrun with monsters, witches and other mysterious creatures, Sonny joins forces with his sister, Sam and a kindly neighbor to save Sonny's mom and foil Slappy's plan. Rated PG (for scary creature action/images, some thematic elements, rude humor). 1 hr. 25 min. Sony Pictures Animation, Columbia Pictures.

(In Theaters: November 2, 2018)

Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale. All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key— which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden FoworaKnight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Rated PG (for some mild peril). 1 hr. 39 min. Walt Disney Pictures.
