In this issue we'll learn all about meteor showers (sometimes called shooting stars) and the August 2018 Perseids with NASA's Space Place (pages 6 & 7). Each August we can look to the skies for the Perseid meteor showers. This year watch for the Perseid meteor showers especially around the week of August 11th, peaking the night of August 12 - 13th in the early morning. August 4th is the first birthday of France's baby panda, Yuan Meng, who was born at Beauville Zoo Parc in France in August 2017. There will be a birthday party and a special birthday cake (made of bamboo and fruits) in honor of his birthday. It's amazing how much this little guy has grown in just one year! Young Dancers and Pre-Ballet by Lauren Lorentz de Haas

For many children the decision to take a ballet class is one of their first independent choices. This decision could be the impetus for learning many other self-reliant skills and behaviors. Sharon McClellan, the director of our Children’s Curriculum at the Triangle Youth Ballet has developed a new class for 3 and 4-year-olds to meet these needs. While similar in some ways to our other pre-ballet classes, the expanded one hour time frame for the class is designed for " Getting Ready for Ballet". Together we work on developing self-reliant skills with the young dancers, like: • getting dressed by yourself • a proper hair styles for ballet • tying your shoes and • keeping track of possessions We will take the time to address to why we do certain things a certain way for ballet. Our goal is to encourage students to become self sufficient at walking into the studio and preparing themselves for an excellent ballet experience. Of course, these skills transfer to many other aspects of the young dancer’s life. Learning how to work together, to share, to wait their turn and to follow directions and all important skills that will help young people succeed in many situations.

All About Meteor Showers

Above: Diagram shows Sun in center, Earth orbiting, and lop-sided comet orbit intersecting earth orbit. Have a family shooting star party! Bring blankets, a sleeping bag, and lie down so you can see the stars in the sky.

What Is a Meteor Shower? When it's time for a meteor shower, you won't need a telescope, binoculars, or a high mountain to have a "star gazing" party. You might need a warm sleeping bag and an alarm clock to wake you in the middle of the night. But then just lying down in your own back yard will put you in the perfect spot to enjoy a great show.

The meteoroids are usually small, from dust particle to boulder size. They are almost always small enough to quickly burn up in our atmosphere, so there's little chance any of them will strike Earth's surface. But there is a good chance that you can see a beautiful shooting star show in the middle of the night!

Meteors A meteor is a space rock—or meteoroid—that enters Earth's atmosphere. As the space rock falls toward Earth, the resistance—or drag—of the air on the rock makes it extremely hot. What we see is a "shooting star." That bright streak is not actually the rock, but rather the glowing hot air as the hot rock zips through the atmosphere.

As a comet gets closer to the sun, some of its icy surface boils off, releasing lots of particles of dust and rock. This comet debris gets strewn out along the comet's path, especially in the inner solar system (where we live) as the sun's heat boils off more and more ice and debris. Then, several times each year as Earth makes its journey around the sun, its orbit crosses the orbit of a comet, which means Earth smacks into a bunch of comet debris. But not to worry!

Most importantly, be patient! If you are lucky, you might see a meteor as often as every few minutes. You may not see one that often. The quality of the "show" depends on the specific meteor shower, the time you are observing, the conditions of the sky, the phase of the moon, and other things.

Plan ahead Here are dates of major meteor showers. Peak viewing times will vary by a day or two each year.

When Earth encounters many meteoroids at once, we call it a meteor shower. Why would Earth encounter many meteoroids at once? Well, comets, like Earth and the other planets, also orbit the sun. Unlike the nearly circular orbits of the planets, the orbits of comets are usually quite lop-sided.

Let your eyes relax and try not to look at any particular spot. This way, your eyes will be more likely to notice any movement and you will see more meteors this way.

Keep in mind: If the moon is full or near full, you may not see many meteors. In the case of a meteor shower, the glowing streaks may appear anywhere in the sky, but their "tails" all seem to point back to the same spot in the sky. That's because all the meteors are coming at us at the same angle, and as they get closer to Earth the effect of perspective makes them seem to get farther apart. It's like standing in the middle of railroad tracks and seeing how the two tracks come together in the distance.

Some years are better than others for numbers of meteors per hour.

Meteor showers are named for the constellation where the meteors appear to be coming from. So, for example, the Orionids Meteor Shower, which occurs in October each year, appear to be originating near the constellation Orion the Hunter.

The Best Meteor Shower of the Year - By Jane Houston Jones and Jessica Stoller-Conrad

In fact, this year you should be able to see some meteors from July 17 to Aug. 24. The rates of meteors will increase during the weeks before Aug. 12 and decrease after Aug. 13. Observers should be able to see between 60 and 70 meteors per hour at the shower’s peak.

If you’re a fan of meteor showers, August is going to be an exciting month! The Perseid meteor shower is the best of the year, and in 2018, the peak viewing time for the shower is on a dark, moonless night—perfect for spotting meteors.

The Perseids appear to radiate from the constellation Perseus, which is where we get the name for this shower. Perseus is visible in the northern sky soon after sunset this time of year. Observers in mid-northern latitudes will have the best views.

The best time to look for meteors during this year’s Perseid shower is at the peak, from 4 p.m. EDT on Aug. 12 until 4 a.m. EDT on the Aug. 13. Because the new Moon falls on the peak night, the days before and after the peak will also provide very dark skies for viewing meteors. On the days surrounding the peak, the best time to view the showers is from a few hours after twilight until dawn. Meteors come from leftover comet particles and bits from broken asteroids. When comets come around the Sun, they leave a dusty trail behind them. Every year Earth passes through these debris trails, which allows the bits to collide with our atmosphere and disintegrate to create fiery and colorful streaks in the sky—called meteors.

However, you don’t have to look directly at the constellation Perseus to see meteors. You can look anywhere you want to; 90 degrees left or right of Perseus, or even directly overhead, are all good choices. While you’re watching the sky for meteors this

The Perseid meteor showers appear to radiate month, you’ll also see a parade of the planets Venus, from the constellation Perseus. Perseus is visible Mars, Jupiter and Saturn—and the Milky Way also in the northern sky soon after sunset this time of continues to grace the evening sky. In next month’s article, we’ll take a late summer stroll through the year. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

to plow all the way through. Because of this wide trail, the Perseids have a longer peak viewing window than many other meteor showers throughout the year.

SUMMER SNACK

Healthier Bite-Size Blueberry Cheesecakes

BlueberryCouncil.org recipe by Food Heaven Made Easy, Jessica Jones, MS, RD, CDE and Wendy Lopez, MS, RD, CDE

Before getting started, set out 3 medium-sized bowls. You’ll use one for the crust, one for the cheese and one for the blueberries.

These healthier version of bite size blueberry cheesecakes are creamy and literally melt in your mouth. Serve in cute little 4-ounce mason jars. Makes 6 servings.

For the crust, pulse almonds and dates in a food processor until you achieve a crust like consistency. Remove from processor and transfer to a bowl. Set aside. For the cheese, blend cashews with water, coconut cream, coconut oil, lemon juice, maple syrup and vanilla extract (in a high speed blender) until you have a smooth, creamy consistency. Add additional water as needed.

Ingredients Crust Ingredients ½ cup of raw almonds ½ cup of dates Cheesecake Ingredients 1.5 cup of raw cashews (soaked in water for at least 1 hour) 1 tablespoon of coconut cream 1 tablespoon of coconut oil 1 tablespoon of lemon juice 3 tablespoons of maple syrup 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 3/4 cup water Blueberry Topping Ingredients 2 cups of frozen blueberries 1 tablespoon of lemon juice 1 tablespoon of brown sugar 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

For the blueberry topping, heat frozen blueberries, lemon juice, brown sugar and cornstarch in a small saucepan over low heat for about 5 minutes (or until mixture becomes thick and starts to slightly bubble).

Lay out all 6 little (4-ounce) mason jars and start by dividing the crust in each jar. Next add a layer of cream cheese and then a final layer of blueberry topping. Enjoy!

Ahoy, Matey! Call 811 Before You Dig!

WEBSITE PICKS

August 11 is National 811 Day

August 11 is National 811 Day, and it's a great time to remind everyone that they must call 811 before digging in the ground. A pirate might safely dig for buried treasure on an island surrounded by the ocean, where there are not any underground utility lines, like gas/oil, water, telecommunications/cable/alarm lines, electric power lines, sewer and drain lines. But unlike a pirate digging for treasure on an island at sea, anyone who wants to dig in the ground in the U.S. must first pick up the phone and call 811 (the same number works in all of the United States) to make sure that their digging or excavation project will not hit any utility lines.

To stay safe and to make sure you don't damage any utility lines, before digging in the ground first take these steps:

CALL 811before digging WAIT the required amount of time (three business days in North Carolina) so that the locators can come out and mark the locations of the underground utilities.

Watch the NC 811 Pirate Video online! www.nc811.org/kids.html

RESPECT the marks, and

DIG with care North Carolina 811 (NC811.org) has videos on its website to teach children (and grown-ups) about NC811, and the importance of calling 811 before digging. Call 811 to give NC 811 information about the place where you plan to dig/excavate (for example, before digging to plant a tree, install a mail box, install a fence, or any project that requires digging.) NC 811 transmits the information to the utilities and then they send out locators to mark the underground lines for FREE.
