Elaine O’Neil is a North Carolina-based textile collage artist who uses fabrics to create beautiful textile collages of fond childhood memories, and whimsical images of the local community and North Carolina landmarks. Elaine O’Neil also is the illustrator of Good Night Carolina, a children’s book written by Missy Julian Fox and Marie Myers Lloyd. As O’Neil describes it, “Growing up in the countryside of rural Maine, I had an idyllic, perfect childhood. Running barefoot in the green fields, playing hide and seek in our big red barn, picking sweet peas, and eating blueberry pie are fond memories I hold dear to this day. My artistic process begins with those simple, pure moments. I strive to conjure up the essence of those good memories and capture them through whimsey and color, all stitched together with a sense of humor and delight. I call the finished piece, "textile collage". "I began sewing as a girl, winning 4-H contests and making all of my clothes. In college, I designed fabrics, enjoying the created effect of color and texture combinations. Later, while our three sons were little and I was home with them, I began creating "scenes" and portraits of a family boat ride, a cow farm, or a seaside picnic. Those 'scenes' were noticed by a gallery and that was the start of my art career.” O'Neil graduated from Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, earning a BS degree in textile design. She is great-granddaughter to a lighthouse keeper, granddaughter to a farmer, daughter of an ardent seamstress, and mother to three sons. O'Neil's ties to her past are ever present. Her work has been featured and exhibited in galleries from the coast of Maine to midtown Manhattan to shops in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina.

Binturong (Bearcat) Visit the Binturongs at the Conservators Center near Burlington, NC!
Binturongs make lots of different kinds of noises to communicate. If they are bothered they can make a high-pitched wail that sounds like a cat screaming, loud howls, low grunts, or hisses. When they are happy, they snort and chuckle!
What has a face like a cat, a body like a bear cub, stiff white whiskers, a tail like a monkey, and smells like freshly popped buttery popcorn?
The binturong! Also known as the "Asian bearcat," the binturong is a

Southeast Asian, arboreal (treedwelling) mammal. (They live in the rainforest trees of southeast Asia.) Even though they look a bit like a combination of sloth, cat, bear, raccoon, seal, otter, and monkey, they are not related to any of these animals. Instead, the binturong is the largest member of the animal kingdom family Viverridae, and are related to genets, civets and fossas.

Their fruit diet is part of what makes binturongs critical to maintaining the rainforest canopy: as they eat and digest rainforest fruits, they help to spread the seeds to continually replant the rainforest. They have long ear tufts and reddishbrown eyes, giving them an endearing appearance.

Very little research has been gathered about this species in the wild. There are nine subspecies of note, all of which are threatened or endangered due to habitat fragmentation and destruction. Binturongs also fall victim to poaching for fur trade, bushmeat, and capture to be kept as exotic pets. Binturongs play a role as a keystone species in the Southeast Asian rainforest ecosystem because they help to spread critical plant seeds that keep the rainforest alive and growing. The reestablishment of new rainforest habitat is nearly impossible without them. European Spacecraft to Make Historic Comet Landing on November 12

Over 10 years ago, a spacecraft named Rosetta blasted off on its way to meet up with an icy dust ball. The European Space Agency launched the mission with contributions from selected European countries, and also from NASA. Those who built Rosetta have high hopes for it. If all goes according to plan, a lander attached to Rosetta will gently descend to the surface of the comet for the first time ever. In fact, the Rosetta mission has already made history. In late August, after its decade-long journey, the spacecraft entered an orbit around a comet for the first time. The comet—Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko—is barreling quickly toward the sun as Rosetta circles around it. This is both a blessing and a curse.

It’s a blessing because we will now have a front-row seat to a pretty awesome show. As this comet gets closer to the sun it will heat up. As it heats up, it will develop the bright coma and stunning tail for which comets are known. It’s a curse because eventually all that heat will make it impossible for the lander’s instruments to work. It could even break Comet 67P apart. That means there’s a deadline for putting a lander on its surface. The scientists must act quickly, and act quickly is what they have done!

Immediately after arriving at its target, Rosetta made a detailed map of its surface. Not only is it a beautifully detailed look at a mysterious space object, but it is also useful. When Rosetta first launched, scientists had no idea what the surface of Comet 67/P looked like. Now, using this map, scientists were able to pick out a number of potential landing sites to study. After teams of scientists and engineers discussed and debated all of those options, they picked one first-choice landing site and one back-up site. Everything is on schedule for the landing attempt to be made in midNovember.

Both on the surface and in orbit, Rosetta will help us understand not only what comets look like up close when they approach the sun, but it will also shed light on the formation of our own solar system. These icy comets are the leftovers from the time when our solar system was just forming.

Meet Buster Halterman
Pro Skateboarder and Founder & CEO of Buster Biofuels From an early age, Buster Halterman loved skateboarding and spending time outdoors on his family's farm. Buster spent over 20 years as a professional skateboarder around the country and around the world, competing in events including the X games, where he was featured on the Jay Leno Show. While he was a professional skateboarder, he also held full-time positions in business management and consulting in the action sports industry. Buster also is an entrepreneur! Early in his pro skateboarding career he co-founded an action sports clothing company called Fuel. Buster Halterman now is the founder and CEO of Buster Biofuels, based in San Diego, California. Buster Biofuels collects and recycles used cooking oil from restaurants and businesses including LEGOLAND California and the San Diego Padres major league baseball stadium, so that the biofuel can be used to run local school buses and fuel their customers' own vehicles and machines (like power washers). Biofuel is much cleaner than petroleum diesel, so that emissions are greatly reduced. Reducing emissions from school buses is particularly important so that children riding school buses will breathe much cleaner air on the way to and from school, and while waiting for the school buses. Everyone benefits from cleaner air! Buster Biofuels also is in the final stages of building its own facility to recycle used cooking oil into biofuel. This month Buster spoke with us about his career, and his advice for kids. How did you develop your skateboarding skills to become a professional skateboarder? Skateboarding became a passion of mine and an expression much needed during my life for about two decades. Like any skill, it took passion, along with great dedication and perseverance. In a practical sense, I was fortunate to have a farm in Pennsylvania where my Mom and Dad allowed me to build a half-pipe. My friends and I lived vicariously through skate videos and magazines when growing up. I learned the fundamentals of skateboarding right there on Farm Valley Road in the barn, and through years of traveling and progression was able to make it to California and around the world riding that piece of wood with 4 wheels. I can’t believe it when I look back. I was fortunate. What inspired your passion for environmental conservation, and when did you become interested in biofuels? When I reflect on my life, I realize how much I learned from my parents and many mentors before I fell in love with the concept of starting a biofuel company. The little life lessons that my parents taught me began to surface and made even more sense to me than they ever had. It makes sense to pick up random trash when you see it on the ground; it makes sense to conserve water and take short showers; it makes sense to turn off the light switch when you leave the room; it makes sense to build cabinetry out of reclaimed barn wood like we did when we were growing up in the farm house; it makes sense to turn the car off instead of letting it idle unnecessarily; and so on. Then I started thinking about other influences like Planet Earth skateboards and other mentors in my life. I have always been attracted to and conscious of the environment. Meanwhile, I wanted to start my own business with meaning and purpose.
I became interested in biofuels in 2008, and bought a processor online to make fuel from the used cooking oil from a couple of restaurants. Today Buster Biofuels helps other corporations like LEGOLAND California and the San Diego Padres reduce their carbon footprint by collecting their oil, recycling and refueling them with fuel from their own grease. This speaks to our mission to RECLAIM, RECYCLE, REFUEL. What do you do on a typical day as CEO running Buster Biofuels, and what is the best part of your work? As the CEO I spend most of my time making critical decisions for day-today operations, budgets, managing the construction craziness and ultimately keeping everyone focused on the “prize”. We have this mountain to climb and will get there soon. The "mountain" for us is actually a bunch of tanks that we need to fill with oil and recycle into a cleaner burning fuel. The production start date is slated for the end of the year. The best part of Buster Biofuels is knowing that I have a great team who believe in the mission I started four and a half years ago. They inspire me and put pressure on me to keep an eye on the prize as well. When we can make biodiesel from the oil we collect, then ship out fuel every day, I will be stoked (had to throw in my skate lingo)! When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? When I was a child, if someone asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would always sincerely say, “a gas station man”. My mom would cover her eyes. This is another ironic part [along with co-founding a clothing company called Fuel over 20 years ago] about me being involved with biofuels. What was your favorite subject in school? I liked math classes. I was never a math wizard, but there’s a clean sense of accomplishment when you solve an equation. I just wish that I did a billion more word problems, because life is full of them every day. What are some accomplishments in your career of which you are most proud? In skating, I‘m most proud of being a top 10 vert skateboarder with worldclass experience. That is an education that I could have never dreamed of. In life, I’m most proud of my two wonderful kids and lovely wife who are the three most amazing people I know. They are my fuel. What is your favorite thing to do when you are not working? Lately, I’ve picked up surfing mainly because my older son loves it and we can do it regularly together. I also skateboard and I enjoy that with both of my kids from time to time. I also like riding my bike to work when I can. I get 10 miles in each way and a nice little train ride as well. What advice would you give to kids who are thinking about starting their own businesses, or developing skills to become a professional athlete / skateboarder? If you want to be a professional athlete or a professional anything ... you need to get motivated and find long lasting passion that will keep you interested and enable you to be the best you can be. It doesn’t matter if you are the best, you just need to do your best in order to be proud of whatever you do. Never give up and don’t fear failure because you will learn from that. Take the wins modestly and use them internally to empower you. Be kind to others, and like most of us in life should do, seek first to understand before being understood! Thank you, Buster! A fluffy-tailed squirrel barks out a warning. Another squirrel nearby quickly stands up on its hind legs, freezes and scans the area for danger.

Sarah Partan, Assistant Professor of animal behavior at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, uses a robotic squirrel in order to observe squirrels in their natural environment, rather than in the artificial environment of a lab. Scientists like Professor Partan hope to learn more about how squirrels communicate.
Squirrels have teeth like their rodent COUSINS – mice, rats and hamsters. All rodents have four big teeth in the FRONT of their mouths. Two are on the top and two on the bottom. They are called incisors. These four incisor teeth keep GROWING throughout the squirrel’s lifetime. Gnawing hard objects such as nuts and ACORNS keep the teeth from getting so big that the squirrel can’t eat. A squirrel gnawed these words off of this paragraph. Where do they belong?

Tree squirrels bury nuts and seeds and use their keen sense of smell to find the buried food at a later date. Some of the nuts and seeds never get eaten and start to grow. In this way, squirrels help new plants to grow. Ground squirrels collect and stuff nuts and grains into pouches inside their cheeks. Then they take the food back to their burrows. HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS from Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation Trick or treat? Halloween is a spooooky occasion, but just because it’s spooky doesn’t mean it can’t be safe. There are a few “tricks” for that. Follow this advice, and your little ghouls will be happy and safe.
Costume Care So much of the excitement around Halloween comes from the anticipation of getting to wear the perfect costume - a pirate, a witch, a monster or maybe even a princess. As you’re planning your little one’s costume, keep these tips in mind: • A light colored costume is ideal for visibility, but if that just isn’t the “look” this year, adhere some reflective tape to the trick-or-treat bag and the front and back of the costume.

When it’s time to show off that costume and load up on candy, these tips will help keep your kids safe: • Young children should always be accompanied by an adult when trick-or-treating, but if they are older, be sure to review an acceptable route and establish a certain time to be home. Older children should also use the “buddy system” when trick-or-treating.
Keep your home, your visitors and your kids safe with these helpful reminders:
• Make sure your little monsters creep around on sidewalks, not the road.
• Be sure your child can see out of any masks they are wearing, and when possible, use face paint rather than a mask to prevent impaired vision.
• Carry a flashlight to help you navigate as the sun goes down.
• Make sure shoes and costumes fit properly. You don’t want your little goblins to trip and fall.
• Your child may forget basic rules because of all of the excitement, so be sure to remind them to look both ways for cars before crossing the street.
• Only buy costumes and wigs that are flame retardant.
• Only approach houses that have their porch lights on.
• Before trick-or-treaters come to your home, pick up anything they could trip on and make sure the area is well lit. • Restrain all pets while there are trick-or-treaters. • Never leave a jack-o-lantern with a lit candle unattended, and never leave children alone near a lit jack-o-lantern. • Keep a fire extinguisher handy just in case, and consider using battery-powered “candles” to illuminate your jack-o-lantern.
