late 19th century, arms of Boume with gilt vine design; H7 1/2” W16” D11 3/4”

$400-600 Provenance: Camden, South Carolina collection Literature: Howard, David S. CHINESE ARMORIAL PORCELAIN. London: Faber & Faber, 1974. p.425. Howard, David S. Woodbridge, UK: Antique Collectors’ Club, 1996. p.112. Other Notes: The original Chinese armorial service (c.1765) was supplemented by a small number of Dr. Wall Worcester replacement pieces, probably within a decade of the original order. Subsequent orders were placed from China after the initial heraldic design. The Boume family name does not exist in public records except for the coat of arms, although it has been suggested that a Mr. Boome [sic] of Putney, documented accountant and “writing master”, might have administered the first order.

381

Literature: Nowinski, Judith. BARON DOMINIQUE VIVANT DENON (1747-1825); HEDONIST AND SCHOLAR IN A PERIOD OF TRANSITION. Rutherford, Fairleigh Dickinson University Press [1970]. Other Notes: When Napoleon Bonaparte and his army embarked on his Egyptian Campaign in 1798, their ultimate goal was to establish an alternative route to India and its riches. However, their defeat by the British at Abuqir left them stranded in Egypt for three years. Having brought with them not only soldiers, but scientists and artists as well, they recorded virtually everything they encountered. It is thanks to the work of this commission that ancient and modern Egyptian monuments, as well as many aspects of Egypt’s natural history were recorded in an exacting and historically important manner. It took thirty years for these illustrative records to be prepared and published. 382

countries prohibit the importation of property containing these materials altogether and other countries require a permit (e.g., a CITES permit) from their respective regulatory agency. For example, the United States generally prohibits the importation of articles less than 100 years of age that contain material from any species listed as endangered or threatened. It is the buyer’s responsibility to obtain any and all export or import licenses, permits or documentation required by any local authority for export from the United States or import into any other country for any object requiring same. Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc. expressly disclaims any liability whatsoever for accidents, injury and damage resulting to any person from the storage or subsequent use of any such lots. While Charlton Hall Galleries, Inc., their employees and representatives, make every effort to accurately describe all lots offered for sale, it is incumbent upon the bidder to satisfy themselves in all areas of authenticity, originality, condition and imperfections. Bidders should also acknowledge that condition reports are often subjective and any item offered at auction may be subject to normal wear consistent with age that may not be specified in a condition report. If a bidder is uncertain about any of these issues, we would recommend that they not bid on lots in question. We would further urge that all potential bidders become familiar with “Commonly Used Terms and Abbreviations” printed in each catalog or available upon request.
